Should you wear a raincoat or a sweater today? Should you go to the office or work from home? These are all everyday questions we might only be able to answer with the help of a weather forecast. When dangerous weather conditions like hurricanes or snowstorms arrive, our choices about what we should or should not do can often mean the difference between life and death.

Weather Forecast Template gives you the ability to prepare your own weather forecast. The first slide allows you to present the weather forecast for 5 business days. This is very convenient when your employees know what the weather will be like tomorrow. You can specify the city if you have several branches in the company. The second slide makes it possible to additionally indicate the direction and speed of the wind. The third slide is impressive with an abundance of infographics. The data visualization is amazing. The fourth slide shows the weather in different countries. Perhaps your manager is planning a meeting with clients in another country and he will be grateful if you send him a detailed weather forecast using our slide. Perhaps you are planning a corporate event and this slide will be useful for all employees to know what the weather is expected on that day. Agricultural workers will appreciate the weather information you provide them in the presentation slides. Weather Forecast Template is ideal for agricultural professionals, airports, travel agencies, and anyone whose work depends on the weather.

See How Easily You Can Display Real-Time Weather in PowerPoint

Aug 18, 2015 | DataPoint Real-time Screens , Dynamic elements

We have 3 possible scenarios for displaying weather.

  • This is a dedicated  weather add-on  for PowerPoint to display weather information in a presentation. This is very easy to use and it can show current weather information and forecasts. If you need to display the weather information then use this option.
  • When you need to display more than just a weather, try our  DataPoint  solution or combine with other Dynamic Elements add-ons. It has the same weather data provider (as in the first solution). This is very easy to use and can combine information from other data providers like database and Excel information.
  • The weather information from any weather source or weather API is typically communicated with XML or JSON format.  DataPoint  can use any XML or JSON data feed. So, if you want to have a full flexibility yourself, then take full control with the XML or JSON data providers of DataPoint.

This blog article covers option 1.

Top 3 things displayed on digital signage screens

Real-time news and weather information, together with the current time, are the top 3 most displayed things on information screens and digital signage screens.

With our DataPoint product you can display all of this together, but we also have smaller and easier Microsoft PowerPoint add-ons to accomplish this much quicker than before. See Dynamic TIME and Dynamic NEWS for more information on time and news respectively. Today I will explain the possibilities of our Dynamic WEATHER add-on for PowerPoint.

Introduction to Dynamic WEATHER add-on

The user can choose to use expensive digital signage solutions but when the user is a bit more creative than everyone, then the user can use the world’s best known presentation tool to set up the information screens with Microsoft PowerPoint. Read more about the advantages of using Microsoft PowerPoint for the information screens  here .

So we use PowerPoint to create our information screens. You already know what PowerPoint can display on a slide; you know that you can easily display text boxes and images to show the information. The only disadvantage about using PowerPoint for the information screens, is that PowerPoint content is static . The user needs to update the presentation manually whenever the user can have new content. For a sales presentation this is easy as not often the pricing information or the specifications of the products are changing, but with weather and news this is a completely different story.

There are tools or add-on software for PowerPoint to extend the standard PowerPoint functionality. Dynamic WEATHER is one of them to add real-time weather information and forecasts to the slides. The weather information is updated automatically, so the user don’t need to stop the running slide show to update the slides with new information.

Setting up a location for monitoring

First of all we will set up at least one location for monitoring. I can use multiple locations; multiple cities of my province, state or country, or just in my neighborhood. Click Dynamic ELEMENTS  in your PowerPoint menu and click the Weather button.

menu of the dynamic weather addon in powerpoint menu

So choose a city in the neighborhood. Then click the Add button of the My Locations option.

monitored locations for weather info

And enter the name of the city. Choose  °F or  °C for Fahrenheit or Celsius and click OK .

dynamic-weather-add-location-properties

The chosen city is now added to the My Locations list and will be monitored every 15 minutes for updated weather information.

one or more cities add to the monitored location list

Weather information pieces

Until now we have set up the city that we want to monitor, but we still need to indicate what information of that city’s weather information should be displayed on the screen.

Dynamic WEATHER now holds a list of weather properties that the user can display on the slides. There are 2 lists to choose from; textual information and graphical information. Textual information is e.g. the current temperature as e.g. 82 °F. Graphical information is e.g. an image displaying a sun to indicate the type of weather for today. Use a normal text box to display textual information and use a picture shape to link graphical information.

Textual information

We start with a first slide and we add some background image to fill the slide. Then we will add a text box to it and while this text box is selected, then when see more properties appearing in the Dynamic WEATHER task pane on the right.

textbox selected to set weather properties

There are 2 new options at the task pane. The first one is to choose the location of this selected text box and secondly the textual properties that the user can assign to this text box.

weather text box properties

After that selection the value of the current temperature is displayed and dynamically linked inside the text box. Whenever the weather conditions are changing now, the content of your text box is updated accordingly.

For today the user can choose to use the following properties

  • current temperature
  • low temperature
  • high temperature
  • text (weather condition, e.g. raining)
  • time of sunrise
  • time of sunset

The Wind node returns the following information:

Atmosphere returns:

The Forecasts node return the forecast information of the next 4 days and per day it returns:

The Location node returns textual information about:

And finally the Units node returns:

  • temperature

So choose whatever node and property that the user can to assign to a selected text box. Click the Clear  button to erase a dynamic link between the text box and the weather property and return to a normal text box only. Add multiple text boxes to the slide to host different weather properties.

dynamic-weather-current-temperature-linked

Use graphical information

Add a new picture to the slide and just select a default image to start with. What image that the user displays initially does not matter at all. The image content will be overwritten with the chosen weather property.

add temporary image to your slide

Now with this temporary image selected, the user have 3 main options at the right in the task pane;

  • Location to display
  • Display this property
  • Display this image set

So first select the location to choose from. Then choose a graphical property on the right. For example selected the Condition Now from the list. This will replace the picture with the graphical information returned by the weather service.

The following graphical information can be chosen;

  • Condition Now
  • Forecast Today
  • Forecast D+1 (tomorrow)
  • Forecast D+2 (day after tomorrow)
  • Forecast D+3
  • Forecast D+4

And finally select an icon set to use. By default one image set is included. It refers to a folder with multiple icons. Each weather condition has a code and in that image set folder, the user will find an icon or image for each weather code. If wanted, the user can design the own icon set and make it available here under another folder.

Run your weather slide show

The user can  now add more information and more slides to the presentation. Save the presentation and run the slide show on the information screen. The weather information will be updated automatically when the user will open the presentation and during playback of the slideshow. The user can now display real-time weather information on the digital signage or information screens without interrupting the running slide show.

Add Weather Forecast to PowerPoint Presentation

Add Weather Forecast to PowerPoint Presentation

Weather forecast can be embedded in PowerPoint presentations and this is something present in one of the lessons available in Microsoft in Education and Lesson plans. You can take a look at  Meteorologist for a Day . Here you will learn how to gather information from Weather.com and embed the weather forecast in a PowerPoint presentation template that is provided for free and can be downloaded from Weather PowerPoint template .

Add Weather Forecast in PowerPoint Presentation

From this lesson we can learn how to embed the following information in a weather report.

Gather data for your weather report. Be sure to include:

  • Current conditions
  • Temperature
  • Precipitation
  • Current Doppler image
  • 5-day forecast

However, sometimes we need to embed real time weather and forecast information in PowerPoint so we can show real time forecast information to the audience.

How to embed real time weather in PowerPoint?

For live updates you can download and install a free PowerPoint addin named LiveWeb which let you embed webpages in your PowerPoint presentations. If you have security restrictions in your organization then this method may not be ok for you, in this case you can try a different alternative or even use a static weather information. This method requires Internet connection in order to display the web page. We will use LiveWeb to gather information from a publicly available weather forecast and prediction website like weather.com and then display the webpage in the PowerPoint slide.

Once you have installed the plugin, you can insert a new web page. Look for this dialog and add the URL for the weather information page that you want to embed.

Live Web

From weather.com you have many options. For example you can use the Weather API that has a monthly fee or you can embed a webpage.

If you want to embed the full web page, look for a city weather like New York weather and then copy the URL and paste it in the dialog above.

https://www.weather.com/weather/today/New+York+NY+USNY0996

Then you can choose where to display the weather page in your slide.

Using Google Weather API

Another interesting approach to embed real time weather report in your PowerPoint presentation templates and backgrounds is to use the Google Weather API that is free. You can use this API however in this case we’d get an XML as an output so we need to process this result from Google Weather API and then embed it into the slides. A possible approach is this one suggested by vba2vsto which explain how to use or parse XML in PowerPoint using VBA.

When you query this URL: http://www.google.com/ig/api?weather=new+york,ny

This will return a XML output like the following:

We can use different approaches to handle XML results in PowerPoint. We will see some of them very soon so stay tuned.

Programmableweb has a list of other 83 weather API’s available for you.

Free Editable Weather PowerPoint template

If you need to embed weather forecast information into a PowerPoint presentation, the free template provided by SlideHunter can be helpful. It is a free Weather PowerPoint template with a modern design and editable elements that will let you customize the slide and prepare awesome weather information or weather reports to an audience. It is great for example if you are showing an agenda to audience and want to show them how’s the weather like today or this week.

Weather Forecast Report Sample Script in English

presentation of weather report

A weather forecast can be defined as, “ A written or spoken statement describing what the weather has been like recently, what it is like at the moment, or what it will be like for a period in the future. ” or “A daily report of meteorological observations, and of probable changes in the weather; esp. one published by government authority”.

A weather report is a bit technical as compared to other report writing you have been practicing earlier. You need to choose words and phrases correctly and present the information gathered in the language of meteorologists.

Weather report writing has its own format which is precise, to the point, and delivers facts and predictions right on hand. A weather report article or analysis typically includes a statement of current weather conditions along with a weather forecast for the next 24 hours.

Following is the weather forecast report sample script in English which includes important information elements included in a typical weather analysis report:

Welcome to the weather forecast. Now, let’s see what the weather is like today. In the north of the country, it’s very windy and cold. There is a chance of some rain too, so don’t leave home without your umbrella! The temperature is around 10º centigrade. In the east it’s rainy all day today, I’m afraid. There may be a thunderstorm in the afternoon. The temperature is a bit higher, at around 13º.

In the west and middle of the country, the weather is dry but cloudy. So no rain for you, but it is quite windy and the temperature is just 10º. The south of the country has the best weather today. It’s cloudy most of the time but sunny this afternoon. The temperature is around 15º.

Typical Weather Report Format

The following are the important information elements included in a typical weather analysis report:

  • Stn:  Station ID
  • Temp:  Present temperature (°C)
  • MinT:  Minimum temperature (°C) recorded over the last 18 hours
  • MaxT:  Maximum temperature (°C) recorded over the last 18 hours
  • RH:  Present RH (%)
  • WndDir:  Wind direction
  • WndSpd:  Wind speed (km/h)
  • WndGust:  Wind gust (km/h)
  • Rain_mm:  Rain since the last report (mm)
  • Snow_cm:  Snow since the last report (cm)
  • Hail_mm:  Hail since the last report (mm)
  • FFMC  – Fine Fuel Moisture Code
  • ISI  – Initial Spread Index
  • DMC  – Duff Moisture Code
  • BUI  – Build Up Index
  • DC  – Drought Code
  • DSR  – Daily Severity Rating
  • FWI  – Fire Weather Index

The weather forecast you mention in your report must be for three or seven days. Do not forecast the weather conditions for months because long-term forecasts are less accurate and, therefore, less reliable. The forecast can be made by studying the satellite map or taking the help of meteorologists.

When writing a weather forecast, you need to state the general weather conditions such as sunny, cloudy, rainy, stormy, cloudy, low and high temperature, and weather warnings like tornadoes, flooding, etc.

How the Weather Prediction Center creates charts, forecasts and outlooks for fronts, precipitation and more | NCEP Series Part 4

C OLLEGE PARK, Md. (KFYR) - Since weather forecasts can get rather complex, the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) creates products that communicate the impacts nationally while focusing on extreme weather events regionally.

To get a snapshot of the current pattern, the WPC draws surface analysis maps with fronts and areas of high and low pressure every three hours.

They serve as a starting point for national forecast maps that project these fronts into the future, serving as an easy-to-understand snapshot of hazardous weather expected in the next few days.

The WPC also creates precipitation forecasts that combine many weather forecast models into one map that meteorologists adjust.

“So, it’s kind of our job to analyze those models, decide which ones we like, and then we have specialized blending tools at WPC that we use,” said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist at WPC.

For areas expected to get a lot of rain in a short time, WPC draws maps highlighting areas at risk for flash flooding on a scale from marginal to high.

“We don’t issue high risks on our excessive rainfall outlooks very often, but when we do, they need to be taken seriously because they do account for the vast majority of deadly flash flooding days,” said Santorelli.

This is typically associated with thunderstorms and tropical cyclones.

“We work really closely with the National Hurricane Center during the tropical season to provide rainfall and flash flood forecasts for landfalling tropical systems,” said Santorelli.

Localized areas are also identified for imminent flash flooding by the WPC.

In the winter, various products are produced by the WPC to communicate the severity and probabilities of snow and ice.

The Weather Prediction Center is at the foundation of communicating the nation’s weather story 24/7, helping fellow meteorologists and the public.

Northern lights in Alabama? Rare solar storm could bring auroras to southern US

by JACKSON WALKER | The National Desk

The May 11, 2024 aurora forecast provided by the University of Alaska —Fairbanks.

WASHINGTON (TND) — The U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center on Thursday issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for a solar event which could impact a majority of Americans Friday into Saturday.

Officials explained in a release they expect an eruption of solar material, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), to result in a geomagnetic storm. Along with the release was the rating of G4 for “severe,” which the agency has not issued since 2005.

When [CMEs] arrive to Earth, a geomagnetic storm can result,” officials wrote. “Watches at this level are very rare.”

CMEs typically see “a billion tons or so of plasma from the sun” arrive on Earth, according to NOAA. This can result in a “major disturbance” of Earth's magnetic field and cause disruptions of navigation systems, power grids and radio communications.

Also possible during geomagnetic storms are auroras, commonly known as northern lights. Americans may be able to view these beautiful light displays far into the Deep South.

The aurora may become visible over much of the northern half of the country, and maybe as far south as Alabama to northern California,” the Space Weather Prediction Center says.

The last geomagnetic storm to receive a G5, or “extreme,” rating was in 2003. That storm shut down power in Sweden and damaged power transformers in South Africa, NOAA said.

Those hoping to view an aurora should look to the skies late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The event will be most visible in dark places away from city lights.

2024 U.S. Tornado Reports Surge Above Historical Average After Severe Weather Outbreaks

AccuWeather Global Weather Center – May 10, 2024

Recent rounds of severe weather and tornado outbreaks across the United States have sent the number of tornado reports surging above the historical average for this time of year.

Roughly 700 preliminary tornado reports have been filed so far this year. The 2024 tornado tally is well above the historical average of 549 tornadoes through May 9.

Image

There have been at least 170 preliminary tornado reports in the United States so far this month. More than 380 preliminary tornado reports were filed in April.

Records show that the only years with more tornado reports by May 9 were 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2017.

Image

Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Kansas, and Nebraska have reported the most tornadoes so far this year.

“Hundreds of homes were destroyed, businesses were damaged, and thousands of lives have been turned upside down by these relentless tornado outbreaks over the past two weeks,” said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter. “Our hearts go out to the families that lost loved ones, and to everyone directly impacted by these powerful storms. The United States experiences some of the most extreme and volatile weather in the world. These recent tornado outbreaks show just how important it is for everyone to be prepared, have a safe space ready, and to immediately get to shelter every time a tornado warning is issued in your area. People taking quick action based on the warnings in this major tornado outbreak saved many lives.”

Image

The AccuWeather 2024 U.S. Tornado Forecast issued in March that accurately predicted “Tornado Alley May Roar Back To Life”. The forecast predicts 1,250 to 1,375 tornadoes in the United States this year. AccuWeather’s forecast is slightly higher than the historical average of 1,225 tornadoes annually.

Despite the recent outbreaks of violent tornadoes, large hail, damaging wind gusts, and flash flooding, some people who live in severe weather threat zones did not experience any storms in recent weeks.

Image

Due to the nature of spring severe weather threats, pop-up thunderstorms, and spin-up tornadoes, Porter urges people not to become complacent and let their guard down.

“Notification and storm warning fatigue is real. Receiving repeated rounds of warnings in the same areas can be frustrating. We know it can be annoying, we understand that from a human level, but it’s so important during these stormy weather patterns to stay connected,” Porter explained. “Do not turn off warnings and alerts on your cell phone. Stay aware of what’s happening, especially when there are severe storms forecasted during the overnight hours when most people are sleeping. Those warnings can save your life. The last thing you want to do is turn them off because they’re annoying.”

Half of the tornadoes that hit the United States typically happen during the months of April, May, and June.
