Problem Solving Study Guide

Problem solving is an essential skill in mathematics that involves the ability to understand a problem, develop a plan to solve it, carry out the plan, and evaluate the solution for accuracy. Here are some key steps and strategies to help you become a better problem solver:

  • Understand the Problem: Read the problem carefully and make sure you understand what is being asked. Identify the known and unknown quantities, and determine the relationships between them.
  • Devise a Plan: Consider different strategies for solving the problem, such as drawing a diagram, making a table, using logical reasoning, working backwards, or using a similar problem as a model.
  • Carry Out the Plan: Once you have a strategy in mind, start solving the problem step by step, making sure to show all your work and calculations.
  • Evaluate the Solution: After finding a solution, check to see if it makes sense and satisfies all the conditions given in the problem. Also, consider if there are alternative ways to solve the problem or if the answer could be expressed differently.

Here are some common strategies for problem solving:

  • Draw a Diagram: When dealing with geometric or spatial problems, drawing a diagram can help you visualize the situation and identify the key elements.
  • Make a Table or Chart: Organizing information in a table or chart can help you identify patterns , relationships, or trends that can lead to a solution.
  • Work Backwards: Start with the end goal and work backwards to determine the steps needed to reach that goal.
  • Use Logical Reasoning: Apply logic and reasoning to make educated guesses and eliminate unlikely possibilities.
  • Look for a Pattern: Sometimes problems can be solved by identifying a pattern or sequence in the given information.

By practicing these problem-solving strategies and approaches, you can become more confident and proficient in tackling mathematical problems of varying complexity.

Usually, the Mathematics textbook problems focus on numbers and do not prepare your child for real-world challenges. With online games, you can provide them with a wonderful educational experience for life. Check this blog to learn how word problem games can enhance your kid's learning experience.

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that problems can occur at any moment, and one needs to know how to keep themselves calm in the face of adversity. With online educational games, you can convey this life lesson to your kids by teaching them that nothing can come in the way of their education.

When you provide your little ones with a fun way to master a demanding subject such as Mathematics, it helps build their confidence.

Word problems involve a few sentences that explain a real-life situation where a problem needs to be solved through mathematical calculation. Let's get to the following sections to know more about word problems.

What are Word Problem Games?

Word problems such as 'Multiply Fractions by Whole' are popular games that will gauge your child’s understanding and help them improve their mathematical skills. In this game, the child will be given problems such as if preparing a recipe requires X amount of a given ingredient, the child needs to compute the fraction of ingredient in each serving.

There are several word problems on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing money and that will be your child’s introduction to the world of finances.

The games cover problems with decimals, thereby giving your kid a holistic understanding of basic mathematical concepts. Problem games include ones where the child is asked to compute the total money when he originally had X amount and has spent Y amount from it.

Some educational websites like SplashLearn take a fun approach to teach Mathematics. There are additive and multiplicative comparison word problem games that involve addition and multiplication respectively to find an unknown value.

Games such as ‘Multiply Fractions by Whole’ lets the child practice their skills without realizing that someone is gauging their performance.

Difficulties with Solving Word Problems

Word problems are often a cause of worry for primary grade kids, and children are often left fearing such topics. A major concern among children is that they do not understand the language of the word problems.

Strategies to Support Your Kid

  • Online games will give kids ample practice, and in no time, your child will ace at problem-solving. These games allow you to ensure that your child is up to date on their learning curve.
  • Since your child will have fun while playing the game, they will want to do it for longer. That way, they will have more time with the concepts and become better learners.
  • When children practice their word problems while having fun, they figure out how to identify keywords in problem statements to gauge the expectations. As they successfully complete one-word problem after another, it builds their confidence.

Final Thoughts

SplashLearn is an online platform that helps your child focus on the analytical side of mathematics. That way, the focus is on the learning and not on the child’s grade. The subject does not come off as monotonous, and the child will be more receptive to the concepts.

How do you help your child in their learning process to make it fun-filled for them? Write to us at [email protected] with your feedback and comments.

Definition:

The four fundamental operations  in mathematics are addition, subtraction , multiplication and division. In this worksheet, we will learn about these operations involving whole numbers .

  • mathematical processes used to solve problems
