Research Projects

Current research projects of MISR Research Fellows & Research Associates

Prof. Mahmood Mamdani - I am currently completing a book project on different historical experiences of settler colonialism (US, South Africa, Israel) and extreme violence (Germany, South Sudan). My aim is to think of justice in the aftermath of extreme violence.

Dr. Virginie Tallio -  I am currently working on two research projects. The first interrogates the cessation of status that is too often taken as the end of the “life as a refugee,” and also investigates relations between refugee communities in Uganda, i.e. where different nationalities are hosted in a context largely depicted as being extremely favorable to refugees but with resources that tend towards being scarcer. The second research interest revolves around oil, exploring the materiality and the symbolism of oil, and their weight into the strengthening of the national identity. The project also interrogates the links between oil and development, more especially within the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Dr. Samson Bezabeh – I am presently finalizing my second book. The book focuses on the political history of Djibouti. Tentatively entitled as “Politics at the Red Sea Gate: Romance, Tragedies and Opportunities in Postcolonial Djibouti,” the book examines how the romantic political dreams that Djiboutians had at the threshold  of independence developed into tragedies and opportunities.

Dr. Benedetta Lanfranchi – I am currently working on a new methodological approach for research in African philosophy. This approach builds on the major debates raised by contemporary African intellectuals in the late 1970s and 1980 regarding the nature, sources, and history of African Philosophy, and reads them closely with the thought of Italian political theorist and activist Antonio Gramsci, as well as with the theoretical developments in the political anthropology school inspired by Gramsci. My aim is to think deeply on the role and significance of ‘fieldwork’ for a theoretical discipline such as philosophy, especially in contexts of communally generated and orally transmitted traditions of thought. This aspect of my research is to feature prominently in my book project on Acholi traditions of justice, which I am currently developing from my doctoral dissertation, ‘Judging Crimes Against Humanity in Acholi. A Philosophical Interpretation of the Use of Acholi Traditional Justice Mechanisms in the Aftermath of the War in northern Uganda’. I am also working on co-edited volume of essays in African Philosophy.

Dr. Lawyer Kafureeka – My work seeks to understand influencing variables of Global Oil and Gas prices, and in particular, understanding how the digital revolution technology-mix with other emerging technologies, is influencing the price trends in the industry, and its implications for developing countries. I am also studying rapid urbanization, the land question and development paradox in Uganda. I ask who are those who lose (in various ways), who retain their pieces and who in the process acquire lands? What are the drivers of loss and the modes of acquisition? In what activities is the money from land used? I am also studying the question of late industrialization in the context of a globalizing and digitalizing world.  What are the challenges, options and opportunities to industrialize for a developing country like Uganda with an economy that remains agriculture-dependent? I am trying to understand whether there are leverageable lessons in the theoretical, case-comparable and historical environment, which could be of use in the 21st century late industrialization ambition-driven countries in Africa.

Prof. Abdu Kasozi – I am currently developing a survey of academic staff capacities and postgraduate needs of Ugandan universities. The aims of the survey are to: Assess current qualifications of staff in Uganda’s universities; to map the PhD holders’ numbers in the university system; to assess PhD training status and training capacities of each university; and to catalogue and make an inventory of PhD graduates in training. My research responds to the need currently to update data on the quantity and quality of the academic staff in Uganda’s universities in order to establish staff training needs.

Dr. Grace-Edward Galabuzi – My current work’s focus is investigating resource extraction policy in Sub Saharan Africa and in particular the extent to which it addresses the question of local community benefits from extractive activities. Are local communities receiving any significant welfare wins from mining and to what extent and in what ways can local communities capture benefits from resource extraction? What is the role of the state and government policy in facilitating that prospect? I am also looking at the global-local dimensions of labour market precarity and their particular expression in and implications for the African and (Ugandan) contexts. The broader context is investigating how the political economy of global - North/South - capitalist relations of production is articulated through a global division of labour responsible for South-North and South-South migrations and its implications for modes of livelihoods in the places where it touches ground such as Uganda or Africa more broadly. Further, are these economies being proletarianized by these processes in any significant ways and if so what politics of labour will emerge from them?

Dr. Lyn Ossome – My current research in feminist political economy has a dual thematic focus. The first is collaborative and seeks to develop theoretical perspectives on the agrarian question of gendered labour. The project draws on empirical evidence from the global south to critique the idea of industrialization as the basic premise of agrarian transformation. In a book-length study, the research examines how contradictions borne of super-exploited and self-exploitative labour in the social reproduction of the global rural and surplus populace present gendered labour as a contemporary agrarian question. The second interrogates the ways in which the changing nature, aims and forms of the neoliberalizing state appropriate and reproduce social, political and cultural identities as modes of social control and legibility to the postcolonial state.

Dr. Florence Ebila – My research focuses on the narrative about food and the evocation of history, memory and nostalgia in Alibhai’s Brown’s autobiography; The Settler’s Cookbook. I investigate how the author uses her personal story to bring out broader themes of migration, racial and ethnic segregation and prejudice; these are significant themes that continue to affect the lives of migrants and immigrants. Through detailed description of food, of the ingredients and of the value attached to the different kinds of food that she writes about, Alibhai’s story ceases to be just a mere personal recollection of her childhood memories or of her life in Uganda and later in the United Kingdom. It is a story of survival, loss and perseverance. The aim of my study is to critically analyze the theme of nostalgia and identify the link between food and nostalgia as represented in this autobiography.

The Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is leading a partnership - Partnership to Enhance Technical Support for Analytical Capacity and Data Use in Southern and Eastern Africa (PERSuADE) which supports Ministries of Health (MoH) in partner countries to conduct analysis, interpretation and dissemination of existing data to inform improvements in HIV, TB, and Malaria programming at central and subnational level.

PERSUADE was designed in response to the Global Fund RFP TGF-20-089.

PERSUADE I initiative was implemented from August 2018 – December 2020 in 8 countries involving national universities and their Ministries of Health; Makerere University School of Public Health - Uganda, University of Nairobi - Kenya, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences - Tanzania, University of Kinshasa School of Public Health – Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), University of Malawi, University of Zambia, University of Zimbabwe and University of Witwatersrand - South Africa. See Persuade I Report.

PERSUADE II is ongoing in 12 countries since August 2021–December 2023. Makerere University School of Public Health is coordinating the partnership through the national institutions and their Ministries of Health. Other partners include the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria , World Health Organization (WHO) and Health Information Systems Programs (HISP) – Uganda .

The goal of PERSUADE is to develop capacity for systematic analysis and use of routine data at regular intervals to improve the performance of the HIV, TB, and malaria programs. The initiative also supports institutionalization of the culture of data use in decision-making at the national and subnational levels to promote local ownership of data analysis and use of evidence by programs. Through these efforts, countries will register improvements in the performance of the critical indicators and enhance sustained disease control for the three diseases.

The PERSuADE approach involves capacity development and skill transfer in the data analysis of at least the WHO minimum standard package for HIV, TB and malaria. PERSuADE country teams conduct analysis side-by-side with staff of MoH and other program staff for skills transfer with a focus on institutionalization and sustainability through mentoring, analysis routines, schedules, SOPs, and a community of practice (COP). PERSuADE is institutionalizing processes and a data culture of program reviews; growing demand for evidence while enhancing existing relationships with MoH; increasing capacity for quality analysis and skills transfer; piloting potential for sustainability; and providing private sector partners with technical and implementation support.

Objectives of PERSuADE II include:

1. Enhance analytical capacity by supporting countries, and in particular the Ministry of Health, in institutionalizing regular data reviews and analysis at national and sub-national level; 2. Support National Programs on key disease-specific analyses in HIV, TB and Malaria on a regular basis and use of the results of the analyses to drive actions towards improved program coverage, quality, efficiency and impact; 3. Build solid national institutional capacity for data analysis and use from multiple sources, including financial and human resources, health products, and resource allocation models; 4. Ensure linkages between analytical capacity activities, outputs and program reviews. 5. Manage, coordinate and contribute to peer-learning, knowledge exchange platforms of communication.

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)

Invitation for the implementation science journal club, presentation of research findings -ms. joan tusabe (30th bssr journal club discussion), hepi conference - wednesday 17th and thursday 18th april 2024, western university visits makchs.

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)  was established in 2002 for the primary purpose of HIV vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda. It is one of the 5 international research sites established by the Department of Defense (DoD) United States HIV Research Program (MHRP), a program centered at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. MUWRP’s main facility is centrally located in Kampala, within a short distance from the Makerere University College of Health Sciences where the MUWRP laboratory is located. The main facility includes the clinic, administrative and data offices.

In May 1998, the Honorable Crispus Kiyonga, the former Ugandan Minister of Health formally invited the US Army to conduct HIV and malaria research within Uganda. A program for vaccine research and development began in 1998 with the US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) and the Henry M Jackson Foundation (HJF) forming a partnership with Makerere University. Initial collaborations were with the Rakai Project (currently the Rakai Health Sciences Program), a collaboration between Columbia University, John Hopkins University, Makerere University (MU) and the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) where the focus was development of infrastructure and definition of cohorts. In June 2002 a memorandum of understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson Foundation was signed of establishing Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) as a non-profit partnership for purposes of conducting collaborative HIV and other research studies.

Since 1998, collaborative HIV research between Makerere University and the MHRP has focused on development of infrastructure, definition of cohorts, acquisition of appropriate products for evaluation, and clinical evaluation of these products. The core of the Makerere University Walter Reed Program’s effort has been to accomplish all activities required for initiation of phase III trials. A key component of these activities has been provision of HIV care including anti-retroviral treatment (ARV) through funding under the PEPFAR Program. Since 2007, MUWRP has broadened their scope of work to address other communicable disease threats as well.

In 2007, MUWRP joined with the DoD Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System (GEIS) operated by the United State Army Institute of Research – Kenya (USARMR-K) to support Avian Influenza Pandemic Influenza (AIPI) surveillance activities in Uganda. This DoD-GEIS program was established in 1996 to strengthen the prevention of, surveillance of and response to emerging infectious diseases. The current MUWRP program supports surveillance of influenza and other emerging infections in animals and humans and collaborates with the Makerere University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB), Ministry of Health, Nature Uganda, CDC, USAID, the MU School of Public Health, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memphis and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

MUWRP has entered in a collaboration with The Joint Mobile Emerging Disease Intervention Clinical Capability (JMEDICC), an effort that is established to support the acquisition and fielding of a test and Evaluation capability for the US Food and Drug administration (FDA) approval of therapeutic medical countermeasures being developed by the DoD. The collaboration will implement an immediate, mobile response capable of conducting FDA regulated clinical trials of therapeutic or diagnostics during an outbreak event.

Legal Status

MUWRP is a company, limited by guarantee with no share capital, registered in Uganda under the companies Act on June 5, 2002 guaranteed by two organizations namely The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for advancement of Military Medicine Inc. of Bethesda, USA and Makerere University of Kampala, Uganda.

Makerere University launches system to monitor research grants

The Independent March 13, 2024 NEWS Leave a comment

research project in makerere university

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Makerere University has unveiled an online management system to monitor research grants and provide support to principal investigators at the institution.

The system; known as the Makerere University Grants Management System (MAKGMS) is charged with tracing the allocation of funds, checking on what the resources are being used for, and facilitating performance or research implementation while ensuring that funds are properly being utilized, among others.

According to Professor Sylvia Nakimera Tamusuza, Head of Grants Administration and Management Support Unit (GAMSU) -GAMSU, all staff will be able to access grant routes through the system, as well as receive management support on necessary documents to strengthen their research grant proposals.

Makerere University has traditionally positioned itself to prioritize research, to become Africa’s premier university in academic excellence and innovation. As a result, the University has encouraged its staff to compete for research grants in addition to the funds provided by the government for research.

research project in makerere university

According to Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the University Vice Chancellor, despite raising funds for research, the university did not have a unit to monitor the funding, which hindered the university from appropriately reporting to their development partners.

In April 2021, Nawangwe directed all University staff (principal investigators) to report all research funding obtained in the name of the university to the funding Administration and Management Support Unit (GAMSU) within one month.

Speaking at the launch of the unit, Yusuf Kiranda, the University Secretary said that grant money is public money like any other money at the university and therefore it is governed by the Public Finance Management Act.

Kiranda explained that; section 43 of the act stipulates any public entity that receives grants is receiving public money and that money must be sent to the government.

But, he argued that; while the same act provides for a waiver for a public entity to maintain the funds with them if they obtain an exemption from the Finance Ministry, it has been difficult for Makerere to obtain that waiver because they do not know clearly which grants they have.

Nawangwe said that the unit will help the principal investigators interested in certain topics to look for grants using the guide on the system but also empower them to have proper accountability whenever they get grants.

Nawangwe added that; the unit will also the management to track the projects; by establishing the sources of the projects but also ensure accountability of every single coin that will be involved in any research project.

Professor Sylvia Nakimera Tamusuza, Head of GAMSU, stated that while the University’s major need is to develop trust with its sponsors, the system would also be utilized to profile all projects that have not previously been prioritized.

Jennifer Blackford, PhD

Jennifer Blackford, PhD

The UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute will participate in a five-year, $8.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish the Vanderbilt Alcohol Research and Education Center.

The goal of the center is to perform research studies that translate findings from animal models into human studies and that use findings from human studies to guide new research directions in animal models. The center will support collaborative efforts by researchers at Vanderbilt and across the country to help better understand and treat alcohol use disorder.

Jennifer Blackford, PhD, MMI’s director of research, will serve as the associate director of VAREC and will lead one of four research projects tied to the grant.

Dr. Blackford’s MMI-based project will investigate brain changes and symptoms in people in the early stages of recovery from an alcohol use disorder. Heightened anxiety and depression are common in early recovery; however, Dr. Blackford’s research has shown that not everyone experiences these symptoms, which are thought to be triggers for relapse.

Dr. Blackford’s project will provide an in-depth study of people in the first month of recovery from an alcohol use disorder, including two brain scans and repeated symptom measures. Her goal is to identify the brain networks that predict anxiety and depression symptoms during early recovery from an AUD.

The new center grant was inspired by cross-species translational work that Dr. Blackford has been conducting with Danny Winder, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt Alcohol Research and Education Center and chair of the department of neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School for more than five years, Dr. Blackford said.

“It is challenging to perform research which rapidly translates findings between rodents and humans, and this large center grant will provide us with exactly that opportunity,” she said. “The center grant includes three rodent projects, which all connect conceptually with my human project. We hope that this will serve as a model for other researchers.”

The center includes a dissemination core that will focus on education and outreach by translating complex scientific findings into accessible information for the public. Plans include podcasts, webinars and a near-peer mentoring program.

The center also includes a research methods core that will establish a course and provide scholarships for researchers across the country to learn innovative neuroscience technologies at Vanderbilt. A summer student program will provide stipends for students from underrepresented communities to work in addiction labs at Vanderbilt, the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and UNMC.

Congratulations! Great research!

Congrats Dr. Blackford. Such important work

Congratulations! This is impactful, much needed work.

Draft rendering of the newly approved chemistry and applied mathematics facility

Rendering of the newly approved chemistry and applied mathematics facility. This is a draft rendering, subject to change.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents today approved plans to construct a new academic and research facility aimed at advancing research and educational opportunities in the fields of chemistry and applied mathematics. The proposed facility, spanning approximately 79,200 square feet, will be situated on the southeast side of Business Field on Main Campus.

The project, with an estimated cost of $175.43 million, will be funded primarily through a combination of campus cash reserves and debt.

Key features

  • Shelled space for future specialized quantum research laboratories and offices.
  • A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic core facility
  • Modern classroom, office, meeting and research lab space
  • A centrally scheduled 200-seat auditorium
  • Student study areas
  • Upper-level roof terrace

Academic goals

  • The facility will provide modern research laboratories to promote the Department of Chemistry ’s research mission, improve recruitment and strengthen retention. Foundational and interdisciplinary research fields include: analytical spectroscopy, environmental chemistry, experimental and theoretical physical/ biophysical chemistry, inorganic and materials chemistry, synthetic and physical organic/bio-organic chemistry.
  • The facility will support the Department of Applied Mathematics ’ efforts to continue to provide a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences, enhancing the department’s effort to be a leading program of applied mathematics in the United States.
  • The facility will provide shelled spaces to be completed in the future for the growing field of quantum-chemistry research.
  • It will serve as a central hub for cutting-edge research, student learning outcomes and sustainable innovation, and it will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among students and researchers.
  • It will provide training opportunities for students and researchers, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Sustainability considerations

  • The chemistry and applied math building seeks to be one of the most energy-efficient research buildings in the history of CU Boulder by achieving an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of approximately 100 kilo British thermal units (kBtu) per gross square feet of the building (kBtu/ft2), according to current modeling.
  • Construction will follow Buy Clean Colorado Act guidelines, using eligible materials that do not exceed the maximum allowable global warming potential limit in each construction category.
  • The building’s mechanical system is being designed to use low-temperature hot water in preparation for the eventual connection to a future district energy loop heated by electricity, in support of the university’s overarching decarbonization plans.
  • It will be the first building on campus to implement the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction. The project will use CLT instead of concrete for the structure in non-research areas of the building. This will reduce the carbon impact of the structure.

What they’re saying

“The approval of the new chemistry and applied mathematics facility marks a significant milestone for our campus,” CU Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano said.

“This project underscores our commitment to advancing research and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. It will not only provide state-of-the-art resources for our scholars but also pave the way for groundbreaking discoveries that will benefit both our campus community and society at large."

What’s next

Construction is slated to begin in October, with occupancy planned for late 2026/early 2027.

Vacated spaces within Cristol Chemistry & Biochemistry are anticipated to be assigned to the College of Media, Communications and Information (CMCI), while spaces vacated by Applied Mathematics within the Engineering Center will benefit the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Principal – CoCIS, Prof. Tonny Oyana presenting the graduands from the College of Computing and Information Sciences. 74th Graduation Ceremony, Day 3, 31st January 2024, College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), Freedom Square, Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, East Africa.

The five-day long graduation ceremony kicked off  on  the 29 th of January 2024 – 2 nd February 2024. During the course of the 74 th graduation ceremony   a total of 12,913 graduands  received degrees and diplomas of Makerere University. Of these, a total of 132 graduands  graduated with PhDs, 1585 with Masters degrees, 11,016 with Bachelor’s degrees, 156 with postgraduate diplomas, and 24 with undergraduate diplomas.

53% of the graduands were female and 47% were male. In the category of PhD graduands, 46 were female and 86 were male. In the category of students graduating with Master’s degrees, 699 were female and 886 were male.

Students in jovial mode celebrate upon graduation. 74th Graduation Ceremony, Day 3, 31st January 2024, College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), Freedom Square, Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, East Africa.

The graduation ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.  Nawangwe  executed the role of Chancellor as provided for in the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act following the expiry of the tenure of Prof. Ezra Suruma as Chancellor.  The University Council commenced the search for his successor that was on-going.

CoCIS Commended for Noble Research in Artificial Intelligence to Solve Africa’s Problems

Reflecting on the May 2019 UNESCO conference on Artificial Intelligence and education in Beijing, China, the Vice Chancellor asserted the university’s potential and commitment to utilization of  AI to make a difference for Africa.

Prof. Nawangwe  reported that the  University through the College of Computing and Information Sciences in collaboration with the School of Public Health received a grant funding worth US$1,500,000 (5.5bn/=) from Google to support its Ocular project that is undertaking research on usage of Artificial Intelligence to enhance the diagnosis process of Malaria, Tuberculosis and Cervical Cancer in Uganda.

Launched on 13 th September 2023, the project team led by Dr. Rose Nakasi benched on the rampant challenges faced by the laboratory experts while undertaking diagnosis procedures. Health centres in Uganda are not only strained with the escalating number of patients seeking for laboratory screening tests – the country has few trained laboratory technicians to support the diagnosis process using the microscope.

The research team according to the Nawangwe took advantage of the existing technologies such as the smartphone and the availability of at least a microscope in every health centre across the country to develop a 3D printable adaptor that was attached to an eye piece of the microscope. The 3D adapter was also slotted in the smartphone to capture images.

Some of the PhD Graduands on Day 3 of the 74th Graduation Ceremony. 74th Graduation Ceremony, Day 3, 31st January 2024, College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), Freedom Square, Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, East Africa.

With the capabilities of Artificial intelligence through computer vision, images can be processed and this directs the experts where the pathogens are. This technology shortens the diagnosis process making it more accurate, quicker and easier to diagnose health conditions and potentially reducing screening time by over 80%.

The Vice Chancellor also reported that in addition, researchers led by a second-year PhD student Paddy Junior Asiimwe designed a device to monitor elderly people with dementia and cognitive impairment in rural Uganda. The device, wearable by the elderly will monitor the patients’ movement and location and then signal the caretaker and the hospital in case of emergencies.

The technology funded by Government of Uganda through Mak-RIF was disclosed on 13th October, 2023. It monitors elderly people remotely using GPS technology which defines a safe zone around a user and a PDR system to monitor the position of the user within the safe zone.  This technology is cheap, and better than the systems existing on market, and is best recommended for more resource constrained environments. The system operates independent of the user mostly in rural areas who cannot read and write. It does not require electricity and runs on batteries, charged once a week and can run for 30 days.

With a degree from one of the best universities in the World, Prof. Nawangwe stressed, that graduates have no reason not to succeed in life.

“Indeed, the World is yours to conquer. If jobs are not forthcoming, create them, for we have empowered you not only to be employable, but also to be entrepreneurs. Be the light that others will follow. We are proud that we have been a part of your life, that we have given you the knowledge and courage to face life in this ever-changing World.  Go out to the World and make it a better place”.
