You must learn how to identify credible sources from untrustworthy ones .

Especially when you are conducting internet research, it’s easy to come across information from people who are not qualified to give it or from sources that have a hidden agenda.

Further, all sources have biases, and these must be accounted for when interpreting information from them.

Conducting your research on unqualified sources will likely lead to you analyzing incorrect data and coming to the wrong conclusion.

Be Open to Changing Your Mind

You may begin your research with an opinion already formed in your mind.

Be open to the fact that this might change as you do your research.

Sticking with one opinion often leads you to use sources biased only in one direction and therefore come to a biased conclusion.

The interactive, conversational, analytical, and generative features of GenAI offer support for creativity, problem-solving, and processing and digestion of large bodies of information. Therefore, these features can act as cognitive resources for knowledge workers. Moreover, the capabilities of GenAI can mitigate various hindrances to effective performance that knowledge workers may encounter in their jobs, including time pressure, gaps in knowledge and skills, and negative feelings (such as boredom stemming from repetitive tasks or frustration arising from interactions with dissatisfied customers). Empirical research and field observations have already begun to reveal the value of GenAI capabilities and their potential for job crafting.

There is an expectation that implementing new and emerging Generative AI (GenAI) tools enhances the effectiveness and competitiveness of organizations. This belief is evidenced by current and planned investments in GenAI tools, especially by firms in knowledge-intensive industries such as finance, healthcare, and entertainment, among others. According to forecasts, enterprise spending on GenAI will increase by two-fold in 2024 and grow to $151.1 billion by 2027 .

The Skills Priority List (SPL) provides a detailed view of occupations that are likely in shortage and the future demand for occupations in Australia.

The SPL is always undergoing updates and improvements so we can assist you with the information you need.

This month we’ve released the Skill Shortage Drivers (SSD). The SSD is preliminary work that is designed to help you identify the potential causes or ‘drivers’ of occupations that are rated as ‘in shortage’ in the SPL.

The SSD classifies skills shortages into four main drivers based on the likeliest cause of shortage, noting that other drivers may also play a smaller role. The four categories are:

  • Long Training Gap 
  • Short Training Gap
  • Suitability Gap
  • Retention Gap.

Understanding the potential reasons that may cause skill shortages is critical for developing targeted policies and strategies to address the issue of shortages.   • Conduct technical work related to energy production, alternative energy systems, and/or natural resource systems related to energy that could integrate the following components: theoretical/laboratory testing, equipment design, pilot/field demonstrations, engineering designs, regulatory policies, economics, and markets.
  • Manage and execute tasks in a manner to successfully complete project objectives on time and on budget within client expectations.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with all EERC groups (e.g., Leadership, technical teams, support staff, etc.). Effectively and professionally communicate with EERC management and clients as pertinent on project status, progress, and any issues/solutions.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with clients outside the EERC, including assisting with proposal preparation and reporting to assure that client goals are accurately described and addressed.
  • Interpret data to address the overall goals of clients, including discussions with clients to achieve their goals as closely as possible.
  • Maintain a high level of technical knowledge in a pertinent field.
  • Work in strong collaboration with EERC subject matter experts, principal investigators, and EERC Leadership to assist in proposal preparation and to develop and pursue new business opportunities.

PhD student position in Safety Engineering for Trustworthy Autonomy

Project description We are announcing one PhD position that is placed at the Division for Interaction Design and Software Engineering with Chalmers University of Technology as the employer. Our division provides world-leading research and education in the development of complex and software-intense systems and is characterized by extensive international cooperation as well as close collaboration with the local industry. With approximately 50 researchers including PhD students, PostDocs, and professors, we are one of the largest academic software engineering research groups in the world. Our core expertise is in AI Engineering, software testing, requirements engineering, behavioral software engineering, and software engineering for automotive systems. Being broadly recognized in the academic community, our division has hosted top international conferences such as ICSE, SPLC, ICSA, REFSQ, and EASE during the past recent years.  

Information about the division and the department The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg in Sweden with approximately 270 employees from more than 30 countries is widely recognized for excellent research and education. Our department is located in Sweden's second largest city Gothenburg - the world's most sustainable destination every year since 2016 according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index. The four research divisions at our department are essential scientific facilitators in a vibrant ecosystem of software-intensive companies such as Volvo, Ericsson, and Einride. This ecosystem is complemented by a growing start-up scene supported by collaboration hubs like MobilityX Labs and AI Sweden, the national center for applied AI that is bringing together over 120 partners across public and private sectors including academia.

Major responsibilities The position comes with enrollment in the PhD program for Computer Science and Engineering, designed for 5 years. As a PhD student, you acquire the skills and knowledge to conduct independent research in the field of software engineering, with a special focus on techniques for enabling dependable AI. You also contribute to the development of knowledge in the subject by writing a scientific dissertation. This includes devoting 80% of your working time to performing research under the supervision of more experienced researchers. Typically, this means carrying out research, writing academic articles, and taking courses to complement your background. The remaining 20% of your working time is devoted to departmental duties, such as helping as teaching assistant in courses offered by the University. Those duties can be concentrated on certain parts of the year depending on the needs of the business in consultation with the students.   

Together with the successful applicant, we aim to consider how to combine techniques rooted in first principles (time-to-collision, physics) and symbolic approaches developed in software engineering (e.g., formal verification, testing, synthesis) with the engineering of learning-based software components (e.g., DNN) to ensure that the learning-enabled component will not be the source of harm. In the past, we have developed approaches to formally verify and test autonomous systems, designed specialized loss functions reflecting the safety principles, and developed runtime verification techniques for abnormality detection. The results have been applied in concrete industrial use cases such as autonomous driving, intelligent defect inspection for high-speed trains, and factory automation. Qualifications A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies if he or she:    1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 

2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or  has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

We strongly welcome candidates who have demonstrated early research potential with evidence such as publications in leading CS conferences within fields such as software engineering (e.g., ICSE, FSE), formal methods (e.g., CAV, TACAS, FM, ATVA), robotics (e.g., ICRA, IROS), AI (e.g., AAAI, IJCAI, ECAI) or machine learning (e.g., ICML, ICLR).

Contract terms Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
