·         خط کشیدہ Khat kusheedah Underlined

خط کشیدہ الفاظ کے معانی لکھیں۔ Khat kusheedah alfaaz kay maani likhain. Write down the meanings of the underlined words.

·         محولہ بالا Mahoolah baala Above-referenced

محولہ بالا مثال بہت موزوں ہے۔ Mahoolah baala misaal bohat mozoon hai. The above-referenced example is very appropriate.

·         دوسری طرف Doosri taraf On the other hand

دوسری طرف وہ میری بات سننے کو تیار نہیں۔ Doosri taraf woh meri baat sun-nay to tayyar nahin. On the other hand, he is ready to listen to me.

·         اولاً Awallun Firstly

اولاً تمہیں وہاں نہیں جانا چاہئے تھا۔ Awallun tumhein wahan nahin jaana chahiye tha. Firstly, you should not have gone there.

·         قطع نظر Qatay nazar Regardless of

قطع نظر اس کے کہ ہم نے اسے پناہ فراہم کی۔۔۔ Qatay nazar iss kay hum nay usay panah farahum ki… Regardless, we provided him with shelter…

·         اس کے برعکس Iss kay bur-aks Contrary to this

اس کے برعکس اس نے اپنے دشمن کو معاف کر دیا۔ Iss kay bur-aks uss nay apnay dushman ko maaf ker diya. Contrary to it, he forgave his enemy.

·         دوسرے الفاظ میں Doosray alfaaz mein In other words

دوسرے الفاط میں وہ اس سلوک کا حقدار نہیں ہے۔ Doosray alfaaz mein who iss sulook ka haqdaar nahin hai. In other words, he does not deserve this treatment.

·         اسی طرح Issi tarah Similarly

اسی طرح وہ دوسرا امتحان بھی پاس کر گیا۔ Issi tarah woh doosra imtehaan bhi paas ker gaya. Similarly, he passed the second examination.

·         نتیجتاً Nateejatun As a result

نتیجتاً، وہ میچ ہار گئے۔ Nateejatun, woh match haar gaye. As a result, they lost the match.

·         آخرکار Aakhir kaar Eventually

آخرکار، وہ کامیاب ہو گیا۔ Aakhi kaar, woh kaamyaab ho gaya. Eventually, he succeeded.

·          میں آپ سے ــــــــــــــ کے سلسلے میں رابطہ کر رہا/رہی ہوں۔۔۔ Mei aap say _______ kay silsilay mein raabta ker raha/rahi hun… I am contacting you about…

·          میں اپنے تعلیمی اور پیشہ وارانہ کیرئیر کی بنیادوں پر خود کو اس خالی آسامی کے لئے مناسب ترین امیدوار سمجھتا/سمجھتی ہوں۔ Mei apnay taleemi aur peshawaranah career ki bunyadon per khud ko iss khaali aasami kay liye munasib tareen umeed-waar samajhta/samajhti hun. Based on my academic and professional career, I consider myself to be the most appropriate candidate for this vacant post.

·         اس مخصوص شعبے میں تجربہ۔۔۔ Iss makhsoos shobay mein tajurbah… The experience in this particular sector…

·         میں آپ سے بالمشافہ مِل کر اپنی نوکری کی درخواست کے بارے میں بات کرنا چاہتا/چاہتی ہوں۔ Mei aap say bilmushafah mil ker apni naukri ki darkhwast kay baaray mein baat kerna chahta/chahti hun. I’d like to meet you in person to talk about my job application.

·         آپ کے ادارے میں خدمات سرانجام دینا میرے لیے باعثِ عزت ہو گا۔ Aap kay idaray mein khidmaat siranjaam dena meray liye bias-e-eazat ho ga. It will be a matter of honor for me to serve your organization.

·         آپ کے مثبت جواب کا/کی منتظر Aap kay musbat jawaab ka/ki muntazir. Looking forward to your positive response.

موزوں کارکردگی دِکھانے پر اسے بونس مِلا۔ Mozoon karkardigi dikhanay per usay bonus mila. He got a bonus for showing proper performance.

·         احکامات کی تعمیل Ihkamaat ki tameel Compliance with orders

احکامات کی تعمیل سب کے لئے لازم ہے۔ Ahkamaat ki taameel sub kay liye laazim hai. Compliance with orders is mandatory for all.

·         نفع و نقصان کو مدِّ نظر رکھیں Nafa-o-nuqsaan ko madd-e-nazar rakhein Consider the pros and cons

·         کانوں کا کچا ہونا Kanon ka kacha hona To be a gullible figure

وہ کانوں کا بہت کچا ہے۔ Woh kanon ka bohat kacha hai. He is a very gullible person.

·         مالِ مفت دلِ بے رحم Maal-e-muft dil-e-beraham Easy come easy go

وہ اپنے بھائی کے پیسے جوئے میں اڑا رہا ہے، سچ کہا گیا ہے کہ مالِ مفت دلِ بے رحم۔ Woh apnay bhai kay paisay juay mein ura raha hai, such kaha gaya hai kay maal-e-muft dil-e-beraham. He is wasting his brother’s money in gambling; it is rightly said, easy come easy go.

·         ہمّتِ مرداں مددِ خدا Himmat-e-mardan madad-e-khuda. God helps those who help themselves.

·         اندھا کیا چاہے دو آنکھیں Andha kia chahay dou aankhain Fulfillment of a wish

·         کہاں راجہ بھوج کہاں گنگو تیلی Kahan raja bhoj kahan gangu teli Huge difference in social status and class

Supreme Court rejects 1st Amendment appeal from Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson

But justice sotomayor said the lower courts should consider how a different supreme court cases affects this one..

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Monday let stand a lower court’s ruling that a Black Lives Matter protest organizer can be sued by a police officer injured by an unknown assailant, a decision affecting the First Amendment right to protest.

The court turned down an appeal from  DeRay Mckesson, a Black Lives Matter activist , who said he should not be held personally liable for the assailant’s actions.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the denial is not an expression of which side has the better case. Instead, Sotomayor said the appeals court in Louisiana should take into account a Supreme Court decision issued in a different case, Counterman v. Colorado , that could impact this one.

"I expect them to give full and fair consideration to arguments regarding Counterman's impact in any future proceedings in this case," Sotomayor wrote.

The 5 th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans last year said the injured officer has a plausible argument that Mckesson ran the protest in a way that made it likely there would be a violent confrontation with police.

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union, which is defending Mckesson, argued the appeals court’s decision violates the First Amendment and a 1982 Supreme Court decision about damages caused during boycotts of white merchants led by the NAACP.

In a supporting brief, the NAACP said that throughout the Civil Rights Movement, the court rejected attempts by segregationists to suppress political activity through criminal charges and civil suits.

The appeals court decision, the NAACP said, “invites harassment and silencing of today’s civil-rights activists and leaders.”

After the appeals court ruled, the Supreme Court decided a different First Amendment case about a man sentenced to more than four years in prison in Colorado for sending threatening Facebook messages. The court said prosecutors used too tough a standard to convict Billy Counterman. Prosecutors, the justices said in a 7-2 decision, must show a defendant acted recklessly, meaning the person "disregarded a substantial risk that his communications would be viewed as threatening."

Mckesson had asked the Supreme Court to confirm that that decision meant the suit against him could not move forward.

"Because this Court may deny certiorari for many reasons, including that the law is not in need of further clarification, its denial today expresses no view about the merits in Mckesson's claim," Sotomayor wrote. "Although the Fifth Circuit did not have the benefit of this Court's recent decision in Counterman when it issued its opinion, the lower courts now do," Sotomayor wrote.

This was the second time the Supreme Court has gotten involved in Mckesson’s case.

In 2020, the court said the appeals court wrongly decided Mckesson could be sued without a clear understanding of Louisiana law. They sent the case back for further review.

After completing that review in conjunction with the Louisiana Supreme Court, a split three-judge panel of the 5 th Circuit said the lawsuit could proceed.

Mckesson rose to prominence as an activist in the BLM movement during protests in Ferguson, Mo., following the August 2014  shooting death of Black teen Michael Brown  by a white police officer.

In 2016, the  shooting death of Alton Sterling  by a white police officer triggered weeks of protests across the U.S.

During protests in Baton Rouge, La., an officer − identified in the court filings as John Doe − was struck in the face by a rock. He suffered injuries to his brain, jaw and teeth.

The officer’s suit against Black Lives Matter was tossed out on the theory that BLM is a social movement and cannot be sued.

He’s seeking damages against Mckesson on the theory that he “knew or should have known … that violence would result.”

Fishers in Madagascar adapt to deadly seas due to climate change

Fishing communities in the south of Madagascar are facing sometimes deadly sea conditions due to climate change, but with the help of the UN’s International Labour Organization ( ILO ) are finding ways to adapt to the new circumstances they face.

The large Indian Ocean island is amongst the poorest in Africa where the majority of people make their living off the land or sea.

Like many other countries in the region, it is suffering the effects of climate change.

UN News’s Daniel Dickinson travelled to the village of Mokala in Anosy region where he spoke to the president of the local association of fishers, Gaston Imbola and Valencia Assanaly, the National Coordinator of the ILO ’s Project Eco-Langouste Sud.

Gaston Imbola: It is becoming more dangerous to fish in these waters because the winds are getting stronger and the weather is less predictable. People have died because their traditional wooden canoes have capsized out in the ocean. Just one week ago three fishers from a different village were rescued off our shores after getting into difficulty. Two were extremely weak. 

Valencia Assanaly:  Climate change is impacting fishing a lot in this region. An increase in the temperature of the sea and a decrease in rainfall causes higher winds which translates into big waves and more treacherous conditions at sea for the fishers.

Gaston Imbola:  We used to be able to fish around 20 days a month, but with stronger more challenging winds it is now between 11 and 15. I’m not very sacred of the conditions but sometimes I do take risks because I need to feed my family. 

Valencia Assanaly: At the ILO we recognize that fishers like Gaston need support, so we are helping them to both diversify their income sources, but also to fish more safely, which includes collaborating on digital early warning systems which highlight dangerous sea conditions.

Gaston Imbola:  In the past, our tradition was to listen to the wind and observe the sea the night before we set out on a fishing trip. But now we can get detailed information about the wind direction and the size of the waves by calling an information service dedicated to fishing folk. This helps us to make a decision about whether it is safe to fish or not. So, this morning, we will fish as there is an amber alert which urges caution, but this afternoon the conditions will worsen and there is a red alert which means it is too dangerous to go out.

Valencia Assanaly:  The ILO has supported the digitalization of the early warning system so fishers can receive information via text messages. We are also providing expertise on the diversification of income resources including the strengthening of practices for fisheries sectors, other than lobster, which is currently the community’s main source of income. While, one of our main goals is to build the capacity, profitability and sustainability of lobster fishing, we recognize that diversification is important as it enables the fishers to be more resilient to the types of negative changes in the climate that we are seeing.

Gaston Imbola:  The lobster season runs from April to December which coincides with some of the worst weather at sea. There are 98 fishing families in this village which has a population of around 800 and together, during the last season we caught 10 tonnes in nine months. Lobster fetches a good price so this is a big benefit to the village.

Valencia Assanaly:  The ILO is also supporting the fishers to organize so they have a decent working environment, that they know their rights and to ensure, as stakeholders, that they are part of the value chain for lobster.

Gaston Imbola:  The biggest market for our lobster is Japan, where we send lobsters which are still alive. Customers in Europe take the prepared meat. I don’t know much about Japan, but I am proud that the Japanese people buy and enjoy our product and that my small village and my country is recognized on the other side of the world as producing excellent lobster.

The UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization ( FAO ) has also supported the Mokala village fishing community providing seaworthy canoes, life vests, safety-at-sea training as well as nets and torches.
