Sport Management is a growing academic discipline in the United States as well as globally.  The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sport Management at Troy University is a terminal degree focusing on student comprehension and interpretation of contemporary, theoretical and applied studies within the field of Sport Management. The mission of the program is to prepare the graduate for a broad range of sport management-related positions to include, but not limited to higher education, research, professional or amateur athletics, and professional sport industry.  The doctoral program in Sport Management is the only Ph. D. program that is offered primarily online in the United States. The program concentrates on developing students to generate the research, critical thinking, and teaching skills necessary for them to be successful in the sport industry and higher education. The coursework in the Ph.D. program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sport management that is intended to build upon each student’s interests. Through areas of specialized coursework and doctoral seminars taught by graduate sport management faculty members, the program offers flexibility for students to analyze a wide variety of opportunities and interests within the discipline of sport management (i.e., organizational management, finance, legal aspects, and marketing of sports). The Ph.D. in Sport Management program at Troy University serves two primary populations: the sport practitioner and the future sport management educator.  Thus, the graduate will be prepared to apply research to the sport industry, contribute to the advancement and dissemination of scholarly research, and/or educate future sport managers. Official scores from nationally standardized aptitude examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT), General Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) are not required for admissions consideration; however, official scores may be submitted at the time of application by those students who feel the results of their examinations will enhance their admissions application.

• The goal of the writing sample is to measure the applicant’s ability to write clearly and succinctly in an academic fashion. The writing sample may include a thesis completed by the student, a significant research or case study class project, preferably written at the graduate level. It is expected that the applicant be either the first or second author if the submission was a group project. The paper must be double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins on all sides. Since the American Psychological Association (APA) style is followed in all written assignments in the Ph.D. program, it is recommended that the sample also be written in APA format. However, other writing styles, including but not limited to Chicago, Modern Language Association (MLA), Turbian, AMA Manual or other accepted research writing styles, will be considered. Note: The writing sample could also include an accepted or published research that the applicant was either the sole or co-author of a research project. The applicant must submit a pdf of the paper or a link as proof of publication.

Applications to the Ph.D. program may be submitted twice per academic year, once in fall and once is spring. The applicant must submit an application to the Troy University Graduate School. After all required documentation has been submitted, the applicant’s entire application packet will be reviewed for admission into the Doctoral Program. No pre-requisites will be required for admission other than the applicant must have attained a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. In order to be given full consideration, all requested materials must be received by the deadlines listed below:

Consistent with other terminal degree programs at TROY, the Sport Management doctoral student will have a maximum time for degree completion of eight years, inclusive of completing dissertation requirements. However, it is important to note that a full-time student (i.e., taking 6 credits per term) may be able to complete coursework in two (2) years. Additionally, dissertation may require 1-2 years to fully complete.

As a result, students can finish the program in as little as three (3 years). To do so, the students must communicate with their major advisor on a regular basis.

The Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management (KNSM) is one the largest academic department at Texas A&M University, generating over 90,000 credit hours and 200,000 (modified) weighted student credit hours each year.

For nearly 30 years, Texas A&M University has been preparing Ph.D. students to excel in the scholarship of sport. We offer a Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sport Management where faculty and students study sport management in ways that impact individuals, organizations and communities both locally and globally.

Using an appropriate array of theoretical, methodological and practical bases, our aim is to expose graduate students to a wide variety of perspectives and methods, then train them to understand and apply their knowledge base to critical areas of inquiry within sport management.

Competency in the content of the course is required rather than the particular course. The Office of Graduate Studies in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management in consultation with the graduate committee chair or temporary advisor will be happy to review transcripts of potential graduate students.

Prior to scheduling the dissertation proposal meeting, each student will:

• Have presented, as sole or first author, at least one presentation at a state, regional, or national conference; and
• Will be an author on at least one research paper submitted to a peer-reviewed national or international journal.

In addition, dissertations will not be signed by the department head until the student has submitted as first author a manuscript (or manuscripts) of the study to a national or international refereed journal (or journals).

Minimum Hour Requirement

The Ph.D. requires a minimum of 67 hours beyond a masters or 96 hours beyond a baccalaureate degree .

Depending on the preparation and experience, doctoral students may be required to complete undergraduate or graduate leveling work in addition to the minimum Ph.D. requirements.

Students pursuing a PhD in Sport Management develop scholarly and research competence, culminating in an original doctoral dissertation contributing to the body of knowledge in sport business. The program is designed for students who intend to make their careers as scholars, teachers, researchers, and professionals in economics, marketing, philanthropy, and urban development, as they pertain to sport business.

Each doctoral student works closely with a faculty advisor from the beginning of their degree program. Under their faculty advisor’s guidance, they are expected to take relevant coursework, engage in relevant research experiences (lab rotations, independent study projects, etc.), generate research ideas, and complete a research dissertation prior to graduation. 

A principal goal of doctoral student training is achieving competence as an independent scholar. This entails not only proficiency in research but in the dissemination of knowledge. To achieve this, students learn to guide the learning of others as a Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). 

Doctoral students and their faculty advisors will form a Guidance Committee, Qualifying Examination Committee, and a Dissertation Committee to provide advice and evaluate student progress at successive stages of the program. 

Sport Management PhD Curriculum

PhD students choose from a set of core courses in Kinesiology, as well as cognate courses from other units, and complete a minimum of 30 pre-candidacy credits beyond the master's level. Qualifying examinations must be passed before advancing to candidacy, after which the student completes an original doctoral dissertation. A minimum of 50 credits including pre-candidacy and candidacy work must be completed to graduate.

The courses you take will vary, depending on your educational goals. Courses taken for graduate credit will carry SM or KINESLGY program codes, and are numbered 500 and above.

About the Program

Isenberg’s PhD in sport management is a full-time, residential program that prepares students for careers in academia. Students receive broad training in research methods and learn to apply advanced business understanding to sport subject matter. With small class sizes, students enjoy individualized instruction from faculty. Valuable teaching opportunities prime students to become educators at leading institutions.

Students generally complete a PhD in Sport Management within 4-5 years. Students must pass both a qualifying and comprehensive examination, and complete three years of teaching at Isenberg. During the final years students research, write, and defend a dissertation.

Students in the Ph.D. program in Sport Management and Policy are passionate about investigating a variety of managerial, business, and societal topics in the context of sport. The program is a full-time on-campus program which focuses on research and prepares students for a career as a professor at leading colleges and universities across the globe.

The program typically takes four years to complete and students focus on developing their research skills over the entirety of their stay in the program. In order to create this ranking, we researched to find all of the schools that offer distance-based online doctorate programs in sports management. We considered hybrid degrees alongside those that were fully online.

We then researched these three factors:

• Freshman Retention Rate (⅓ of final score),
• Graduation Rate (⅓ of final score), and
• Affordability (⅓ of final score)

It is calculated on a per-credit basis, and online students are eligible for financial aid. This program is a post-professional program that is open only to certified athletic trainers.

This program consists of 66 credits in total. Over summer, you will have to take courses such as Leadership and Mentoring in Athletic Training Clinical Practice, Advanced Evidence-Based Practice in Athletic Training, Research Methods in Athletic Training, and more. The program begins in the summer with a four-week stay on campus; all of the coursework in the fall and spring semesters can be completed entirely online.

The program can be completed in just six semesters of full-time study. Online classes will cover topics like Current Issues in Clinical Practice, Quantitative Methods and Statistics, Advance Action Research in Athletic Training, and more. The program does culminate in a dissertation. Clinical practice accounts for over a third of the required credits. Similar to Temple’s program, this is post-professional and open to certified trainers only.

There is only one on-campus requirement in CalU’s program, and that is to present your professional portfolio and defend your dissertation if that is relevant to your plan of study. This is a 48-credit program that places heavy emphasis on research. You will create an evidence-based professional portfolio as you progress through the program; and learn to integrate trends in health science, exercise science, and fitness to improve your clinical practice or related professional career.

Some of the classes you’ll take include Health Promotion and Wellness for the Individual; Leadership in Wellness Education and Professional Practice; Curriculum and Course Design and; Community and Corporate Wellness. You will also have the opportunity to take electives that are in the areas you want to focus on professionally. This program can be completed in just two years.

Some classes you’ll take include Interpersonal Relationship in Sport, Interpreting and Applying Analytics in Sport, Effect of Governing Bodies on Sport Leaders, and Strategic Planning and Thinking for Global Sport Leaders. You will also be able to choose a few electives. There isn’t a dissertation associated with the program, but there is a Doctoral Capstone Project instead.

In order to be eligible for the program, students must hold a master’s degree in sports or a related profession. You will also need a passport in order to attend the study abroad components. It is preferred that applicants have a minimum of three years experience working in professional, collegiate, or high school sports; however, some exceptions may be made. The cost per credit hour is $670 for students that don’t reside in Tennessee.

This online Sports Management PhD is made up of 60 credit hours and has a tuition rate of $494 per credit hour regardless of your residency. The program is broken down into four major components which are the Doctoral Core, Research and Statistics Requirements, Cognate Area Requirements, then your exam and dissertation. You are encouraged to defend your dissertation in person, but it is not required. You can use Skype or a similar program.

There are several different cognate areas to choose from. The university lists the following: Sport Organization Behavior/Theory; Sport Marketing, Sport Finance, Legal Aspects of Sport, Athletic Administration, Sport Communication, or Sport Tourism. This program is designed for students who are interested in working in sport and are either currently employed or are unavailable to take courses on campus and are looking to complete the program in an online setting.

If you are currently employed or are unable to take courses on campus, you can enroll in our online M.S. in Sport Management program. This 30-credit-hour online degree has all the benefits of the on campus degree – same instructors, same courses – and can be completed full-time or part-time. Most students select the program part-time while working and, on average, take two calendar years to complete it. You will complete 24 credit hours of class work online, followed by a 6-credit Internship or Masters project. Internships provide actual sport management industry experience in specialties such as collegiate sport, professional sport (major and minor league), national sport committees, North American sport governing bodies, full-service sport marketing agencies and event management firms.

Students in our Sport Management online program have previously interned with the following sport organizations: Madison Square Garden, the Carolinas Golf Foundation, the New York Islanders, and dozens of colleges and universities, among many others.

Graduates of the Sport Management online program work in a variety of sport organizations, particularly at universities, colleges and high schools, including: Kenyon College, Cazenovia College, the University of Maine, the College of William and Mary, and Stafford County Public Schools (VA), among many others. Other graduates have gone on to work in professional sport organizations, such as the Carolinas Golf Association and the Utica Comets.

Admissions and housing.

What are the GPA requirements?

A minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.8 or its equivalent is preferred. If you have an undergraduate grade point average below 2.8 your application will be reviewed for admission on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration standardized test scores, your personal statement, letters of recommendation and any previous industry experience.

Do I have to take the GRE or GMAT?

A waiver for the test requirement may be given to students that have a 3.3 or better overall GPA or can document 5 years of industry experience in a related field. If you meet neither of these waiver criteria, then you must take either the GRE or the GMAT. The Sport Management Graduate Program does not have a pre-set minimum test score, but does take the score into consideration in its evaluation of the application in its totality.

What other materials are required?

• Completed Online Graduate Application
• Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended to be forwarded directly to the SUNY Cortland Graduate Admissions Office.
• Either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores to be sent to SUNY Cortland by Educational Testing Service (ETS). A waiver for the test requirement may be given to students that have a 3.3 or better overall GPA or can document 5 years of industry experience in a related field.
• A 250-500 word letter of intent explaining what your professional goals are and how our graduate program will assist you in achieving them, as well as what you bring to the program from your relevant background and experience.
• A minimum of two letters of recommendation, including at least one academic and one professional letter.
• A resume, submitted online with application
• Additional supplemental materials may be requested as determined by the department such as an interview

I am an International Student. What other admission criteria do I need to meet?

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam report with a minimum score of 550 (paper version) or 213 (computerized version), and 79 Internet equivalent on the U.S. scale. If you are at or slightly above these minimum scores, you may be asked to provide additional evidence of English proficiency. If you are interested in pursuing a dual degree program, you will be expected to meet the English proficiency standards of both institutions.
• Official college transcripts with professional translation of all documents into English along with the original documents.
• Financial support statement.
• Applications will be reviewed for admission based on academic accomplishments and the level of proficiency in the English language. Immigration form I–20, which is used to secure an F-1 visa, will be issued once all required information has been received and you have been accepted to SUNY Cortland.

Tuition at SUNY Cortland is adjusted annually.

Are there any scholarships available?

Yes. There are scholarships available for both out-of-state and international graduate students . 

Can I get financial aid?

Yes. If you are eligible for federal financial aid, it is available for graduate school at SUNY Cortland. You must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits a semester to qualify for federal financial aid.

Program Information

How many students are in the program?

There are between 75 and 100 graduate students across all the programs at any one time. Approximately 25-35 are in the SPMG online program specifically.

How long does it take to earn my degree and is there a time limit to finish?

The SPMG online program is designed to be completed in two calendar years (5 semesters), but can be completed over a longer period of time if it suits the student’s schedule.

All students have a 5 year time limit beginning with their first semester of enrollment to complete their degree.

In which semesters may I start the Sport Management online program?

You may start in either the Fall or Spring semester, or during the Summer.

Are courses offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters?

Online courses for the Sport Management program are offered in the Fall and Spring semesters and Summer session. Internships may be done in either semester or the summer.

What is the average class size?

Class size varies, but on campus courses are capped at 25 and online courses at 20. This allows for a low student to instructor ratio.

Can I take all of the classes online or will I have to come to campus?

Yes, you can complete the entire program online without ever having to come to campus.

I have courses from another Master’s program. Can I transfer those to SUNY Cortland?

Do I select my advisor or is one assigned?

Upon admission to the graduate program, all students are assigned an advisor from among the graduate faculty in the Sport Management Department. You will received notification of your advisor on your acceptance letter.

How will I know what courses to take?

All students must take the core courses for their selected program. Once you are admitted to the program you will discuss the specific courses you will take and in which semester with your advisor.

Are there minors and/or concentrations available?

No, there are no minors or concentrations in the graduate program. Electives allow students to focus coursework on areas of specific interest to them.

Do the same instructors teach in the online program as the on campus program?

Yes. We do not outsource our online program courses. Professors who teach online courses are the same ones who teach courses on campus.

Internships

Does SUNY Cortland place graduate students in internships?

No, we do not place students in internships.  However, we will assist you by providing guidance and suggestions about organizations with which to intern, as well as with editing your resume and cover letters.

If I am offered a job immediately after my coursework is complete, do I still have to do the internship?

Yes and no. You still need to complete the internship credits, but you may use a NEW job as your internship. You CANNOT use an existing job for your internship.

In the event you already have a job, you can do a Masters Project in lieu of an internship. The content of the Masters Project will be determined by you and your advisor.

Where can I do my internship?

You can do your internship anywhere in the world that you would like, as long as it is related to sport. Internships must be approved by your advisor.

The Sport management major at Georgia Southern provides academic preparation and practical experiences in the skills and techniques required to be successful in the sport business industry. The program focuses on sport career advancement related to sport business and administration, both for-profit and non-profit organizations. Sport management is one of the fastest growing fields of study in the country, which focuses on the business of sport including marketing, finance, media relations, sport sociology etc. The Georgia Southern graduate program is perfect for people who are 1. currently working in the sport industry, are 2. working as a graduate assistant that is focused on a sport business, or 3. someone considering a career change to working in the sport business industry. The plan of study considers the busy schedules of full-time employees and encourages intertwining content-based discussions and activities with students’ employment and work experiences.

• Provide a writing sample explaining “What does the field of sport management mean to you?” Then highlight or explain a current trend/issue in the management sport. The statement should include an in-depth explanation indicating your knowledge of the academic perspective of sport management. Candidates need to clearly show and explain their understanding of the business of sport management, not their personal goals in the field. The written statement needs to be a minimum of one page double-spaced but no more than two pages.
• Provide transcripts showing the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a college or university accredited by the proper regional accrediting association. If applicant holds additional degrees or classes from accredited institutions, those transcripts must be submitted as well. The committee will review previous coursework that relates to the curriculum in the Master’s in Sport Management program.
• A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 is required to be considered for admission into the program. An undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 may result in admission with provisional status. Obtaining a GPA of 3.0 on a master’s degree or at least 12 graduate credits may be assessed on the basis of master’s-level degree work.
• Resume will be used to review the quality of work experience and length of related professional experiences/internships.
• Applicants should prepare a professional video that is one-to-two minutes in length. The video needs to address Who you are, your goal from the sport management program and how it will help pursue your career, and why you want to get this degree. Program Update from Professional MSA to Online MSA

In line with our mission to be the best program in online sport business graduate education, we have made important changes to our Professional (hybrid) Master of Sports Administration program. Beginning Fall 2023, the program has been renamed the Online Master of Sports Administration program. 

The overarching goals of the program continue to be to ensure that students receive a high-level sport business education while also offering the opportunity to connect with the Bobcat Sports Ad network at residencies and sport business conferences. To reach these goals, we updated our curriculum to include important content areas like Sport Marketing and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and have reduced the number of required residencies. 

We continue to provide online graduate sport business education for sport business professionals who want to further their education without pausing their careers. 

Online MSA Curriculum

36 Credits | Part-time format | 2 Starts/year (Fall & Spring)

The 36-credit OMSA program combines the flexibility of online learning with crucial, in-person networking and residency opportunities. The curriculum is centered around a sports administration core plus five special topic courses that cover a variety of important trending topics, like Sport Business, Esports, and Sports Betting/Gambling. Students will take a 1 credit hour Capstone course in their final semester. 

The OMSA program will host two residencies in Athens and will offer experience options like the National Sports Forum conference and Ohio University Sports Administration Symposium to ensure students have several opportunities to connect with alumni, faculty and other Sports Ad students during their time in the program.

Residency Opportunities

The OMSA program will host residencies on the Athens campus, and also offers students experiential learning opportunities to attend national conferences – such as the National Sports Forum and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics – as a part of the program. Our goal is to ensure that academic content is provided in an online format and that crucial in-person networking opportunities, with alumni, faculty, industry experts, and other Sports Ad students, are provided during the student's time in the program.

Kelley Walton is an Associate Professor of Instruction in Ohio University's Department of Sports Administration. She is also an attorney and consultant with over ten years of legal and human resources experience in the Sport Industry. She received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
