The person must mention how they first met the couple or the husband or wife. If they met either one before they entered a relationship, they should mention when they became aware of the relationship.

3. Positive Emotional Stories

The person should also include some positive emotional stories that highlight the couple’s love for each other. For example, they can mention an extravagant gift the husband put together for their wife or describe how the couple bonded after getting lost in the wilderness on their honeymoon.

4. Authentic Facts

The person should also mention verifiable facts such as the couple’s wedding date, wedding location, and how they traveled to attend the wedding. They should mention this in a straightforward manner that doesn’t sound overly formal or constructed.

5. Statement of Genuineness and Proof of Marriage

The person should explicitly state that they believe the couple’s relationship is genuine and they are happy together. They can include descriptive terms such as “committed”, “soulmates”, “meant for each other”, or “deeply in love” to further describe the relationship.

6. Contact Information

The person should also include their contact information and close out the letter by stating that IRCC can contact them if they require any further information. These contact details include their full name, phone number, email address, and residence address.

Karan and I both grew up in Mumbai, India and lived in the same home together before he immigrated to Canada in 2021. The two of us met Jhoti for the first time at a rooftop barbecue event in 2013.

Being separated from his wife certainly seemed difficult for Karan, and he would come to visit Jhoti in India in December each year. Jhoti also visited Karan in Canada on a visitor visa in June 2021 and the couple went to Banff for their second honeymoon.

Support Letters for immigration from friends and family are a key piece of any spousal sponsorship application. Think of it as a backup to the main Spousal Sponsorship Letter written by the sponsor .

A support letter for immigration written by family or friends provides further evidence that your relationship with your sponsored spouse is genuine. While it doesn’t have to be quite as structured as the spousal sponsorship letter, the support letter from family and friends has to be written the right way.

Because IRCC immigration officials will go through it , word by word and fact by fact, looking for inconsistencies with the spousal sponsorship letter as well as checking for facts that don’t square with your application’s supporting documentation.

In the case of inconsistencies, immigration officials will suspect a fake marriage or a forced marriage. At best this will trigger an interview, at worst your application will be denied.

• Sponsor : The Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident who is sponsoring their foreign-born spouse or partner.
• Principal Applicant : The spouse or partner that’s being sponsored.
• Family members : The applicant’s closest relatives – spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, and their dependent children.
• Spouse : The person the sponsor is legally married to, according to the law of the country they were married in.
• Common-law partner : A person the sponsor has shared a conjugal relationship with for at least 1 year but has yet to marry.
• Conjugal partner : A person living outside Canada who has been in a conjugal relationship with the sponsor for at least 1 year but who cannot live with the sponsor as a couple or marry because of religious, cultural, or any other legal restrictions.
• Are under 22 years of age
• Do not have a spouse or common-law partner
• They have depended financially on their parents since before the age of 22
• They have an emotional or physical condition that means they cannot financially support themselves

You need to understand these basic terms. Why? The last thing you need is a letter of support, immigration, from your friends that confuses the definitions and mixes the basic terms up. Remember, you don’t need to school everyone with these terms, but you do need to understand them yourself .

Pro Tip: Make sure the letters don’t all look the same. The last thing you want is to have IRCC thinking you made the letters on your own computer.

Who you choose to write the immigration letter of support really matters. They should be a close friend or family member you’ve had contact with on a fairly regular basis and who knows your spouse and is familiar with your relationship . Ask yourself the following questions about the person you choose to write the support letter:

• Were they at your wedding ? If not ask someone else who was at your wedding to write it.
• Have they visited you – hopefully more than just once – over the last few years? In other words, have they seen how your relationship has evolved?
• Are they in any of your photos you are submitting to IRCC? See example below.
• Who are they? family, friends, colleagues? What position do they hold? We cover this topic down below.

Yes, everything here has an impact. Take a look:

• Family is better than friends
• Best friend is better than friends
• The higher the status of the person can also have a major impact . For example, a letter from your uncle who is a professor at a university will be a lot better than a letter from your own mother.

Tip: If you can, have at least one photo with all three of you in the same picture. Make sure you date, add names, and give a short description.

It really depends on how strong your case is, take a look at the examples below:

• You and your spouse have been together for over 10 years and have two kids . Y ou could do without any supporting letters . This does not mean one or two letters would not have a positive impact.
• You and your spouse have been together for 3-5 years and have one child . You should file at least 2 supporting letters .
• You and your spouse have been together for 2 to 3 years . File as many supporting letters as you can .
• You and your spouse have been together for 5 years or less . File as many letters as you can and, seek paid professional help before you file the Spousal Sponsorship application.

Pro Tip: Did you know there is another document that has even more impact on your application then a support letter? It’s called a Letter of Explanation . This is the secret weapon most law firms use to explain weak points  and to try speeding up the application .

Describing a heart-warming love story is not enough, and it sometimes might be too much. A few strong words (deeply care for each other; have a strong bond; etc.) that show the relationship is genuine and that give an authentic tone to the letter are what you need.

But you also require a few key facts that officials can corroborate. For example, a few details about the wedding (where it took place, when it took place, who was there, how they travelled there) as well as details about when the relationship started , how it started , and how you know the couple are all necessary to convince officials that the support letter and the person writing it have a legitimate connection to the sponsor and spouse. Ask yourself: is there more information to support your relationship? You have to build a facts-based case that convinces immigration officials that your relationship is genuine. That’s what your support letter for immigration has to do – provide the facts in order to convince officials.

You also should clearly indicate the nature of your relationship to the sponsor: younger brother, best friend since high school, etc. Do it near the beginning of your letter, where you tell the reader who you are and what your relationship is to the sponsor.

Pro Tip: If you have a weak case . Example, that there is a 15-year age gap between the two of you? Have the smartest person in your contacts, someone who also has a big age gap in their own marriage, write the letter. Have them specifically address the age issue in the letter.

A good support letter needs to focus on activities that strengthen the case for the sponsor and spouse/partner’s relationship and helps convince immigration officials that their relationship is genuine. For example, it should:

• Emphasize any interactions between the sponsor and spouse’s families.
• Emphasize that lots of family and friends attended the wedding.
• Emphasize any children they have had together (biological children add more weight to the case) if applicable.
• Emphasize the time the couple have spent together and what kind of relationship they have built together.

Here’s how the basic outline of your support letter should look:

• Say who you are and describe your relationship to the sponsor and the spouse/partner
• List the Principal Applicant (the Spouse/Partner in other words)
• List of any children, especially dependent children
• How you know or met the sponsor
• How you met the spouse/partner
• How you found out the relationship was getting serious.
• How you found out they were getting married.
• Where and when was the wedding?
• Who was at the wedding?
• What type of wedding was it, and what was it like?
• When and where did you visit them after they were married?
• If they have a child, describe when you found out about the pregnancy.
• Describe the child and any visits interactions you have had with them.
• Remember to add a final sentence asking them to please get in touch with you if they need any further information ( Important : Remebmer to add your contact details in the letter).

Here is what IRCC says about this matter, “ Officers should examine the documents submitted as proof of the relationship to ensure that they are not fraudulent ”.

• Is the letter genuine – this is easy to do and IRCC is using AI technology more and more.
• When they first found out about the relationship.
• The frequency and involvement with the relationship.
• What is their opinion about the relationship and about you .
• If the letter was written by someone that does not command a strong understanding of the English language, keep it .
• If the letter has is written in an immature manner, don’t use it . It reflects poorly on you.
• If you think the letter has slivers of negativity . Example, your own mother, have the letter checked out (by someone that does not know your mother).

What is an Affidavit of Relationship Sample Letter?

It is a support letter for immigration but is also a sworn statement that begins with wording like: I the undersigned hereby under oath state the following. This is generally followed by a detailed, point-by-point summary of the key facts of the relationship, including the affidavit writer’s relationship to the sponsor and spouse/partner. It is dated and signed and is a legal document.

Is it acceptable to Say They Have a Legal Union for the Purposes of Immigration?

Never. This is exactly what you have to convince immigration officials is NOT the case. Your letter of support has to prove that the relationship is authentic and ongoing, and the sponsor & spouse/partner have been building a life together, one step at a time. That’s why your letter should include precise dates that state when an important event occurred.

Applying for a Partner Visa is a challenging process and the fact that the partner visa has the highest refusal rate (37%) of all Australian visas doesn’t make it less stressful. For the Partner Visa the applicant needs to collect what feels like hundreds of documents to upload to prove that he/she is in a genuine relationship with his/her Australian partner. One of those documents is very crucial: the relationship statement. Before being able to start uploading all your evidence (photos, bills, etc.), you will have to write your relationship statement for the partner visa – a process that clients often struggle with as they are never quite sure how to write a relationship statement to support their partner visa application.

The relationship statement is needed for all visa types ( subclass 820 , subclass 801 , subclass 309 and subclass 100 )

Your relationship statement can be a simple word document explaining how your relationship developed. It will have to cover all 4 pillars, which are:

• shared financial responsibilities
• nature of the household
• social activities
• future commitment.

Before you start writing remember this : Dates are a crucial part of your statement. The Department wants to when you’ve first met, what date you considered your relationship to be official, when did you move in together, when did you get your relationship registered (if applicable), when did you get married (if applicable).

Honesty, accuracy, structure and detail are the key factors to the perfect statement and though it sounds cliché reading those key points, it will ultimately decide on whether you will be able to live with your partner or not…..so no laughing matter, being genuine and honest is absolutely mandatory.

When it comes to the length of your statement , there really is no set limit. You just need to make sure to have covered all important aspects of your relationship. The average is usually between 2-4 pages but can be shorter or longer in another cases. Again, the partner visa is a visa that highly depends on your situation and circumstances.

Writing your relationship statement

If you follow our structure below and provide detailed answers to the questions and give relevant examples, you will be well on your way to writing a good relationship statement for your partner visa .

Beware: All relationships and people are different and the case officers know that. If they feel you are using someone’s statement or are making up stories, they will investigate further. Be honest and state your stories and its facts. Try and provide as much evidence to support your story. (e.g. phone logs, screenshots, social media messages, etc.). Write in your own words. Your English does not need to be perfect. Case Officers know that not everyone speaks English as their first language. Just write the truth, give details and provide documents to support your statement.

The K-3 nonimmigrant visa is for the foreign-citizen spouse of a United States (U.S.) citizen. This visa category is intended to shorten the physical separation between the foreign-citizen and U.S. citizen spouses by having the option to obtain a nonimmigrant K-3 visa overseas and enter the United States to await approval of the immigrant visa petition.  K-3 visa recipients subsequently apply to adjust status to a permanent resident (LPR) with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) upon approval of the petition. Because the spouse of a U.S. citizen applying for a nonimmigrant K-3 visa must have a immigrant visa petition filed on his or her behalf by his or her U.S. citizen spouse and pending approval, a K-3 applicant must meet some of the requirements of an immigrant visa. It should be noted that under U.S. immigration law, a foreign citizen who marries a U.S. citizen outside the U.S. must apply for the K-3 visa in the country where the marriage took place. Eligible children of K-3 visa applicants receive K-4 visas. Both K-3 and the K-4 visas allow their recipients to stay in the United States while immigrant visa petitions are pending approval by USCIS.

What is a "Spouse"?

A  spouse  is a legally wedded husband or wife. Same-sex spouses of U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents, along with their minor children, are now eligible for the same immigration benefits as opposite-sex spouses.

• Merely living together does not qualify a marriage for immigration.
• Common-law  spouses may qualify as spouses for immigration purposes depending on the laws of the country where the common-law marriage occurs.
• In cases of polygamy, only the first spouse may qualify as a spouse for immigration.

• You, the U.S. citizen sponsor, must first file  Form I-130 , Petition for Alien Relative, with Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office that serves the area where you live. The USCIS will send a Notice of Action (Form I-797)  receipt notice  to inform you that it has received the petition. See the USCIS website under  K-3/K-4 Nonimmigrant Visas  for more information.
• You must then file  Form I-129F , Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), for your foreign-citizen spouse and stepchildren. See  Direct Filing Addresses for Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e)  for information on where to file the petition for a K-3 visa.
• After USCIS approves the petitions, they will be sent to the  National Visa Center (NVC)  for processing.

Important Notice:

When both petitions have been approved by USCIS and sent to the NVC or when USCIS approves the I-130 before the I-129F, the availability of, as well as the need for, a nonimmigrant K-3 visa ends. If the NVC receives both an approved I-130 petition and an approved I-129F petition:

• The nonimmigrant K-3 visa case will be administratively closed.
• The application process explained below will not be available to the foreign-citizen spouse and cannot be used.
• The NVC will contact the U.S. citizen sponsor and foreign-citizen spouse, with instructions for processing the IR-1 (or CR-1) immigrant visa. For more information on the immigrant visa process, review the  Immigrant Visa for a Spouse  webpage.

The U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you, the foreign-citizen spouse, will apply will provide you with specific instructions, including, where to go for the required medical examination. During your interview, ink-free, digital fingerprint scans will be taken. Some visa applications require further  administrative processing , which takes additional time after the visa applicant’s interview by a Consular Officer.

Eligible children of K-3 visa applicants may apply for K-4 visas. Separate applications must be submitted for each K visa applicant, and each K visa applicant must pay the visa application fee.

You, the foreign-citizen spouse, (and eligible children applying for K-4 visas) will be required to bring the following forms and documents to the visa interview:

• Completed  Form DS-160 , Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application . You (and any eligible children applying for K-4 visas) must: (1) complete Form DS-160 and (2) print the DS-160 confirmation page to bring to your intervew. 
• A passport valid for travel  to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless  country-specific agreements  provide exemptions).
• Birth certificate
• Marriage certificate  for the marriage to the U.S. citizen spouse
• Divorce or death certificate(s)  of any previous spouse(s)
• Police certificates  from your present country of residence and all countries where you have lived for 6 months or more since age 16. (Police certificates are also required for accompanying children age 16 or older.) 
• Medical examination  (vaccinations are optional, see below)
• Evidence of financial support  ( Form I-134 , Affidavit of Support may be requested)
• Two (2) 2x2 photographs . See the required photo format explained in  Photograph Requirements
• Evidence of relationship  with your U.S. citizen spouse
• Payment of fees , as explained below

Note:  The consular officer may ask for additional information, such as wedding photographs and other proof that the marriage to your U.S. citizen spouse is genuine. Documents in foreign languages, other than the language of the country in which the application takes place, should be translated. Applicants should take to the visa interview all original civil documents, such as birth and marriage certificates as well as legible photocopies of the documents and translations. Original documents and translations will be returned.

In preparing for the interview, applicants will need to schedule and complete a medical examination. Before the issuance of an immigrant or K visa, every applicant, regardless of age, must undergo a medical examination which  must be performed  by an authorized panel physician. You will be provided instructions regarding medical examinations from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply for your visa, including information on authorized panel physicians. K visa applicants are encouraged to get the vaccinations required under U.S. immigration law for immigrant visa applicants. Although such vaccinations are not required for K visa issuance, they will be required when adjusting status to that of legal permanent resident.  Applicants are therefore encouraged to fulfill these vaccination requirements at the time of the medical examination. Proof of Financial Support and Affidavit of Support Forms

During the visa interview, applicants will be required to present evidence to the Consular Officer that they are not likely to become a public charge in the United States. You may present evidence that you are able to financially support yourself or that your U.S. citizen spouse is able to provide support. The Consular Officer may request that a  Form I-134 , Affidavit of Support, be submitted by the U.S. citizen spouse.

The U.S. citizen spouse will need to submit Form I-864 to USCIS with the application for adjustment of status to that of legal permanent resident.

No. The 125 percent of the federal poverty guideline minimum income requirement, the most recent year's tax return, and other requirements only apply when a Form I-864 is needed. Applicants using Form I-134 will need to show that their U.S. sponsor's income is 100 percent of the federal poverty guideline.

You should read the  Rights and Protections pamphlet  before your visa interview to learn about your rights in the United States relating to domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse and protection available to you. The consular officer will verbally summarize the pamphlet to you during your interview. Additionally, K-3 visa applicants will be provided with any existing criminal background information on their U.S. citizen spouses that USCIS received from other government agencies during processing of their Form I-129F petitions.

My Petition Expired – Can It Be Extended?

The I-129F petition is valid for four months from the date of approval by USCIS. A Consular Officer can extend the validity of the petition if it expires before visa processing is completed.

Ineligibilities for Visas

Certain conditions and activities may make you, the applicant, ineligible for a visa. Examples of these ineligibilities include: drug trafficking;  overstaying  a previous visa; and submitting fraudulent documents.

If you are ineligible for a visa, you will be informed by the Consular Officer and advised whether there is a  waiver  of the ineligibility and what the waiver process is. Learn more and see the complete list of  ineligibilities .

How Long Will It Take to Get My K Visa?

For Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), you can visit the USCIS website for the status of your  petition .

Once your case has been received from NVC by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate that will process it, the length of time varies from case to case according to its circumstances. Some cases are delayed because applicants do not follow instructions carefully or supply incomplete information. (It is important to give us correct postal addresses and telephone numbers.) Some visa applications require further  administrative processing , which takes additional time after the visa applicant's interview by a Consular Officer.

If you are issued a K-3 visa, the consular officer will give you your passport containing the K-3 visa and a sealed packet containing the civil documents you provided, plus other documents prepared by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. It is important that you  do not open the sealed packet . Only the DHS immigration official should open this packet when you enter the United States. As the K-3 visa holder, you must enter the U.S. before or at the same time as any qualifying children holding K-4 visas.

No. Your children may apply for K-4 visas based on the approval of Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), that your U.S. citizen spouse filed on your behalf, but your U.S. citizen spouse must list the children on the petition. Separate visa applications must be submitted for each K-4 visa applicant, and each applicant must pay the K visa application fee. 

Your U.S. citizen spouse is also not required to file I-130 petitions on behalf of your children before he or she is able to list them on the I-129F petition. However, your U.S. citizen spouse must file separate I-130 immigrant visa petitions for your children before they can qualify for permanent residence or apply for adjustment of status. More information about adjustment of status is available on USCIS’s website under  Green Card (Permanent Residence) .

Important Notice:  Under U.S. immigration law, a  child  must be unmarried. In order to file for adjustment of status for your child, the child’s stepchild relationship with your spouse must be created before your child reaches the age of 18.

Your children may travel with (accompany) you to the United States or travel later (follow-to-join). Like you, your children must travel within the validity of their K-4 visas. Separate petitions are not required if the children accompany or follow to join you within one year from the date of issuance of your K-3 visa. If they want to travel later than one year from the date your K-3 visa was issued, they will not be eligible to receive K-4 visas, and separate immigrant visa petitions will be required. If your child has a valid K-4 visa and you have already adjusted status to that of permanent resident, your child may still travel on the K-4 visa.

Entering the United States: Port-of-Entry

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to the U.S. port-of-entry and request permission to enter the United States. You should be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have authority to permit or deny admission to the U.S. Upon arrival at the port-of-entry, be prepared to present to the CBP officer your passport with visa and your unopened/sealed packet containing your documents. 13A visa "Joint letter to Commisioner from applicant and spouse".

Hello all, We were married 3 months ago to the day. Finally got the marriage certificate from the NSO. On the application it refers to a "Joint letter request addressed to the Commissioner from the applicant and the petitioning spouse". Does anybody have a letter that they have created that we could use as a guide in the application? The instructions seem pretty straight forward for the application and I was looking at doing it all myself. For those who have gone through the process, do you suggest using a lawyer for advice, or to facilitate it, or can it be done easily by ourselves. We will be using the Iloilo office which is the closest to us. I have already checked and they can process the application there. Thanks

We had an attorney draw up our letter. Just make sure you cross all the t's and dot the I's It took a few days over a month to get the temp 13a back

Thanks for the responses, the template above which I also found on-line and one provided by another member is what we used to create our letter. I submitted the paperwork yesterday at the BI office in Iloilo. The officer there was quite satisfied with what we provided. Interview or "hearing" as they describe it is scheduled for next week. Any comments on the type of questions they ask at the hearing would be appreciated.  

They asked me only 3 question at the main office at BI 1. How long you been in PI? 2. Where did you get married? 3. Where you from in the U.S.? I guess I got them all right I got my 13A.  

Old Form I used I have the old form from the Philippine Chicago Consulate, the headers would have to be different but this is what I used. http://www.chicagopcg.com/forms/petition.pdf You don't need to use lawyers for this kind of thing, watch out for fixers also, If you need the service of someone like this inquire inside, anything goes outside the PBI. Some of the other forms posted look redundant this form is something from your spouse for you.

Well you can do all this before you arrive here and then you won't have the one year probationary issue to work around. Not sure you have a Philippine Consulate in Argentina and it says you are from Afghanistan so you might end up doing it all here, because you need some sort of police read out from the area you have lived in at least 2 years if not you can do what's called an NBI clearance here in the Philippines after living here 6 months so you'll be doing allot of running around Manila it sounds unless you can some how get this all accomplished in Argentina. I had my 13a Visa completed through the mail with the Philippine Consulate in the US and it took about 2 months they had questions, yes you'll need to get all the forms and a complete physical performed by who ever the Philippine Consulate recommends if they have no one then the requirement is for a Medical Doctor M.D. Once that completed you are not done, you carry your package with you to the Philippines, you do get the 13a Visa stamp in your passport but have within 1-2 weeks to report to the PBI upon arrival and get your Immigrant card, once this is completed you have to come back a couple weeks to a couple months to get your Immigrant card, ugh... it's a process here, so hopefully you won't be living to far from Manila.  

I am taking all my documents with me to the Philippines and want to submit them in Manila. Just wondering of the time frame and cost also. The requirements and costs are different if I submitted them in the UK or New Zealand so I want to submit them in the Philippines. If it takes longer than 30 days I have a problem but if it only take 7 days all good. It does not state the time frame on the website.  

Anything that you can do in your home country will be a vast benefit in any visa or immigration attempt. Remember that the only thing that is reliable or dependable in the Philippines -- is that NOTHING is reliable or dependable here in the Philippines--period. If you are wanting a married immigrant visa for someone to be able to leave the Philippines to live elsewhere it can take between 18 months to two (2) years for approval. A fiancee visa will take at least 90 days. Wishing you the very best of luck but you need to know and understand that the Philippines is an underdeveloped 3rd world country where time and efficiency mean virtually nothing at all..

My wife has full CFO stickers and certificate etc. The reasons for the visa is to allow me to live in the Philippines rather than keep paying visa extension fees. 9250 peso eatery extra 59 days. Thus I am applying with my Filipino wife for a - Conversion to Non-quota immigrant visa by marriage Just trying to get the heads up because people here have been through this process. Inloved in the Philippines 6 months so I do understand your points raised. Any help is very much appreciated.  

I am getting ready to apply for the permanent 13a. One of the requirements is an affidavit of cohabitation. I looked online for samples but found nothing applicable. There are many samples of the petition letter. The only affidavit sample I could find was for single people cohabitating, not married. Anyone have a good sample of the affidavit format?

I am somewhat curious about this too as I will need to start the application process in a couple months. Is this another requirement? As I understand, the procedure for the 13A Permanent is basically a do over of the procedure for the 13A Probationary or am I missing something? I was planning to just do everything over again but just change the content of the letter to adjust for the circumstances and timeframe. Fred  

Here is a a scan of part of the cover sheet I got from BI last month. They marked out the bottom 2 items. The quarantine is not applicable to most 1st world countries, and they will do the BI clearance. You can see item #3 is the affidavit of cohabitation. It is probably relatively simple, but I was looking for a sample. Since we will have to pay to get it notarized, I only want to do it once. I guess I could just submit a sex tape ha ha... maybe not....

I will check that copy of the letter, do you need someone to certify thats its a trrue statement?  

I just looked at the letter you posted it a simple letter, who is the person to certify this letter stating you are living together as husband and wife still.  

Letter from spouse I looked at the sample letter and it seems redundant really, why would there be any need to stick on that form the Passport information...Lol, come on and I wish I could remember what I had to do but mine I think was signed by the Philippine Consulate in Chicago it was notarized. The current letter out of Chicago (link) makes it clear it's a petition letter from the wife (signature of petitioner only) or spouse and notary republic signature. http://www.chicagopcg.com/forms/petition.pdf Basically this letter format could be changed to reflect Manila addresses and add subj matter Cohabitation Letter Requirement and Address this to the Manila PBI: To Whom it May Concern but make several copies just in case. Hopefully, someone else has more information on this but I remember that you do have an interview with the Philippine Bureau of Immigration so maybe this is the time that the document is signed? And if not... for sure any PBI Satellite office. Directory of Transactions would be able to notarize this or the PBI Office in Manila.  

The letter (I did some research) that pdf file that JShannon used is nearly identical to a legal form used by Philippine couples that live together but aren't married, the format is the same with both signatures, so then I looked up the definition of Cohabitation and... well here's the definition: 1. the state of living together and having a sexual relationship without being married. "couples increasingly prefer cohabitation to marriage" 2. the state or fact of living or existing at the same time or in the same place. "a harmonious cohabitation with other living creatures" Did I just open up a can of worms?  

M.C.A you are right about the definition of Cohabitation, I also noticed that an NSO marriage cert is not required now, or maybe my eyes are not reading properly lol Anyway if they continue to use proof of Cohabitation as a requirement for 13a visa single people who are just living together can apply for te 13a as no one can change the definition of Cohabitation, sorry I just remembered we are in the Philippines lol  

You are correct the Marriage Certificate is not required and neither is the spouses Birth Certificate. Why. because they are already included in the probationary filing. Well so was your passport info, the NBI Clearance and BI Clearance. So why do they need these again? Because you might have left the country, the NBI is only valid for a year and the BI Clearance is issued every time you have a Visa action. Now the Cohabitation Affidavit is both of you affirming that you live together and are entitled to the 13a permanent visa. The 13a would be revoked if you separated. so you are just confirming your relationship status at that time. JMHO Chuck  

When I did my letter the BI had no sample form. I found one online, but when I took it to an attorney for the Notary... they rewrote the whole thing. They did not like the formatting. So just go have a lawyer do it. I went to the Municipal Hall and there was a minimal fee (I forget how much, it was too long ago).
