UCLan graduation ceremonies start today

Today the first set of students will be returning to the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for their long-awaited graduation ceremonies.

Three ceremonies will be taking place today, with 26 in total being held between 6 and 17 September, as 6500 graduates from the classes of summer 2020, winter 2020 and summer 2021 finally get a chance to celebrate, after much delay.

The ceremonies are being held at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre, on the Preston Campus, as post-event celebrations with family and friends take place on the new multi-million pound University Square afterwards.

In order to ensure the safety of everyone involved, the university advised all graduates, visitors and staff members to take a lateral flow test beforehand, whilst attendees were also asked to wear face coverings on the day.

The celebratory ceremonies are the first to take place since December 2019 , and will be live streamed on the University’s YouTube channel, for family and friends around the world to watch as well.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Baldwin said: “I’m absolutely delighted we’re able to give thousands of our students the opportunity to proudly wear their academic caps and gowns so they graduate in person.

“I know the past 18 months have been very difficult for everyone but I’m so proud of the resilience these outstanding graduates have shown. They adapted quickly to online learning and started their careers in the middle of a global pandemic."

Universities across the country had to delay graduations due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and whilst Edge Hill University’s ceremonies took place this July, Lancaster University has had to postpone their summer graduations until next year.

Brooke Shields’s Daughter Made an Iconically Unhinged Choice for Her Graduation Gown

Many little girls play dress-up in their mother’s wedding gown, dreaming of someday altering the dress for a special occasion. It’s the plot of 27 Dresses. For Brooke Shields’s daughter, that dream came true, with a twist. For her high school graduation in June, Grier Henchy, daughter of Shields and Chris Henchy, chose the ivory satin dress that her mother had worn…to marry another man.

Yes, her parents are still together, but Grier was like, “Mom, remember when you married tennis legend Andre Agassi in 1997? Can I cut the straps off that?” (paraphrasing). And it looked really good! It’s called sustainable fashion; look it up.

“Her graduation dress was my first wedding dress,” Shields just revealed to People . “We had to rebone it a little bit so it was tight and sleek. We took out all the poof because I didn’t want it poofy. And we made it strapless.

“She looked great in it,” Shields said of Grier’s graduation day. “It’s such an honor when they want to wear your stuff. Normally they don’t think I’m cool.”

The iconic actor and model said that she lets Grier and her older daughter, Rowan, raid her closet on the regular. “Honestly, they can wear anything because just to have it have another life—you save the stuff and wonder why,” she said. “It’s like, some big Sotheby’s auction? I highly doubt it. Unless they’re iconic items. So when they have another life, it feels good.”

And it certainly helps that there’s apparently no ill will between Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi, who divorced in 1999. “He’s a good guy, so to me it was really like a big full-circle moment,” she said, adding, “and it honors something and I think that’s healthy.” (Their marriage was… complicated .)

UCLan’s graduation celebrations return

Upcoming ceremonies will take place over two weeks with post-event celebrations on the new University Square

Thousands of students are returning to the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for their long-awaited graduation ceremonies.

Graduates from the classes of summer 2020, winter 2020 and summer 2021 will don their academic caps and gowns at 26 ceremonies taking place between 6 and 17 September.

As in recent years, the graduates will take to the stage in the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre, on the Preston Campus, but the post-event celebrations with family and friends will take place on the new multi-million pound University Square.

To ensure the everyone’s safety during the prestigious degree and award ceremonies, the University is asking all attendees to wear face coverings and is advising the 6,500 graduates, their visitors and staff members to take a lateral flow test beforehand.

To ensure family and friends around the world can watch the celebratory ceremonies, live streaming will once again be available on the University’s YouTube channel .

Three people with strong links to the University will all take to the stage to accept prestigious Honorary Doctorates or Fellowships.

Honorary Doctorates will be conferred to Mike Tynan and Professor Klaus Leisinger while Sarah Carr OBE will receive an Honorary Fellowship.

Mike Tynan is an experienced leader in the civil nuclear sector with a career spanning 40 years. He will receive his award to acknowledge the significant contribution he has made to the Higher Education sector, particularly through his support and guidance on a number of University projects, most notably the Engineering Innovation Centre and the development of nuclear education.

Professor Klaus Leisinger will receive his award to acknowledge the significant contribution he has made to the Higher Education sector, particularly through his co-development on the Global Code Of Conduct for Research in Resource-Poor Settings, and his support of the TRUST project, co-ordinated by UCLan’s Professor Schroeder.

Sarah Carr will receive her award to acknowledge the significant contribution she has made to early years’ education and childcare.

Aerial ropeway

A unique installation for central Russia, an aerial ropeway spans the Volga, connecting Nizhny Novgorod with Bor. The scenic service is very frequent, although somewhat pricey for such a short distance (90 RUR, as of 2016).

Outside of the cities, there are a number of important monasteries within Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, such as Makaryev Monastery (across the Volga from Lyskovo), or the Diveyevo Monastry not far from Sarov, in the southwest of the province.

Russia's Golden Ring is nearby and its prominent attractions at Vladimir and Suzdal can be daytripped from Nizhny Novgorod by bus.

The next major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Vladimir to the west and Kirov to the east.
