Movie Review: Vince & Kath & James (MMFF 2016)
Vince & Kath & James follows the titular characters ( Joshua Garcia as Vince, Julia Barretto as Kath, and Ronnie Alonte as James) in a romantic comedy that has them navigate through life and love, mostly through the medium of text.
To be completely honest, this film wasn’t something I really looked forward to in this festival. It seemed super cheesy to me, with the concept of being adapted from a first of its kind ‘ social-serye ‘ which shares the same name (sans the James ). But the film somehow transcended that and presented some surprises along the way.
I was right by saying that this was indeed a cheese-filled film, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that its cheesy in a bad way. I was not too familiar with how the story went in the source material aside from its basic premise, but the love story that emerged between the three leads (mostly that of Vince & Kath) was easy to follow and entertaining given the unique narrative style that was mainly supported by on-screen graphics of texts and online posts. As with any [teen oriented] romantic comedy, this wasn’t without the common tropes of the genre and the drama in between, but it delivered on the kilig in all the right moments, both with the actors and through the texts that they sent to each other. I can attest to how effective the kilig levels were by how much squirming and squealing I could hear from multiple parts of the theater I was in. The story and its characters were generally likeable throughout the whole film, but my main problem generally lied within the subplots that were given them. Aside from being almost too generic subplots for a Filipino RomCom, they were pretty underdeveloped, leaving little to care for save for some parts that actually pushed the story forward and gave the characters some motivation. The time allotted for the said scenes could have been used to further develop the main plot, which would have made for a much better overall arc.
What really impressed me with this film is how well the leads performed. Julia Barretto, who has long been in the industry as a child actress and the next in line to the her family’s celebrity clan (with her mother being Marjorie, and aunts Claudine and Gretchen), is starting to prove her place as an actress. More than just being a pretty face, she is able to shift seamlessly to and from different emotions such as joy, anger and the inevitable kilig . But the real breakout star in this film is Joshua Garcia, who effectively brings out a charming, relatable and rootable leading man in his character Vince. He brings a lot of energy and talent into the film and carries the audience along to different emotions. From merely being a housemate in the Pinoy Big Brother house, he is definitely giving justice to being dubbed as ‘ the next John Lloyd Cruz. ‘
Aside from their individual performances, the two leads may have finally met their match in each other, after several failed attempts at love team pairings for Julia with other actors such as Enrique Gil, Sam Concepcion and Iñigo Pascual. The two had really good chemistry that resulted in so many kilig moments for the audience, so I hope they get to have more projects together. What’s actually sad is that the third lead of the film, Ronnie Alonte ultimately fails to keep up with his fellow actors. It may be because he is a newcomer compared to the two who have already been in several tv and movie projects, but that does not really save him from a flat and unlikeable performance. I actually felt that his parts of the film held the story back, making me rethink my initial thoughts on his acting performance in his other MMFF entry Seklusyon. It’s great though that supporting actress Maris Racal provides great back-up and comic relief to the film’s lead.
Another thing that made me appreciate the film less was its production value. It may not be noticeable to a general movie-going audience, but the film has a lot of technical issues, from lighting, continuity, and sound, to even some questionable production design choices. Its production meant to be simple, yes, but that should not excuse it for not polishing or checking it well. It’s a good thing that the on-screen graphics and the soundtrack really helped set the tone in telling the cutesy story.

Few things are as satisfying as a good love story, and if there’s anything Filipino cinema has mastered over the decades, it’s telling them. There’s certainly a lot of dreck—the byproducts of an industry that often sacrifices quality and originality for quantity and star power—but every once in a while, it churns out an understated gem like Theodore Boborol’s Vince & Kath & James . That makes it all worthwhile.
The film’s conceit is essentially Cyrano de Bergerac for the text generation: A soft-spoken but eloquent man (Vince) helps his more dashing but less articulate cousin (James) court a girl they are both in love with (Kath) via anonymous text. At first glance, this may seem like millennial pandering, but the film never truly sacrifices its story or its characters for the sake of its conceit. Rather, it strategically employs its conceit to round out its more important elements in ways traditional storytelling would not allow.
The SMS courtship unfolds entirely in the first act, and makes for some unrealistic viewing. In this age of catfishing and social media anonymity, the idea that a sensible young girl would fall for someone she’d only interacted with through text is difficult to swallow. Fortunately, the film jettisons the gimmick as soon as it’s able, settling into a groove that, while formulaic, is far less clunky.
The film pulls its story off so well mainly due to the chemistry between its three leads, particularly Joshua Garcia’s quietly intricate performance as Vince. He imbibes the character with real nuance and grace, as he navigates the various tragedies of his young life with his head held high. It’s one of the more satisfying portrayals of the “Nice Guy” archetype in Filipino cinema, and is the film’s beating heart and soul.
A crucial, if not largely ignored, factor in the film’s impact is its commitment to depicting the regular hustle and bustle of college life, beyond just the love story at its narrative’s center. Long Xerox lines, OJTs, and thesis problems are all given tasteful screen time here, giving the film a touch of reality that only makes it more impactful.
Ultimately, Vince & Kath & James has far more in common with the classic teen rom-coms of the 80’s and 90’s than it does any modern love story. Like those films, it concerns itself with chronicling the lives of regular teenagers, and the very well-worn turns of young love, and while it hits many of the familiar beats, it does so with charm and genuine heart. It is formula done right, and a worthy little film among this year’s crop of thematic heavyweights.
After all, few things enthrall quite like a good love story.

Vince & Kath & James the Rapist
Review by Paul Alcantara ★★★½
This film is proof that it's still possible to make a quality rom-com in today's local film landscape. With its three-dimensional characters and believable relationships, Vince & Kath & James becomes a delightful viewing experience reminding us what it's like to be young and hopeful for love. It has the rom-com tropes down-pat, even Star Cinema's obligatory Mommy Issues, but the movie uses them to enhance the emotional richness in tackling its theme. This makes me very optimistic about the future of Philippine mainstream cinema.

ok lang sana pero tangina the way this movie portrays women HUHU kadiri whats with the fake rape scene and the male gaze wet car repair scene and all the zero personality girlfriends that only exist to cling on some varsity guys shoulder and the gay jokes gusto ko lang naman kiligin bat ganito HUHUHU joshua garcia & julia barretto tho hehe

Vince & Kath & James is one heck of a chill pill. I felt what I had to feel in this romantic comedy's charmingly crafted, oddly satisfying cliché. The common technique of story telling was done spontaneously by juxtapositions that never appeared out of place. Plus, it was really refreshing to uncover an actor like Joshua Garcia and his naturalness, and realize how ravishing the chemistry was between him and Julia Barreto. This has been one of the very few instances I felt kilig coz of a movie under the mainstream light in Philippine cinema, swear 😆.
It has an ordinary (when I say ordinary, it IS ordinary) formula but also has a stroke of peculiarity. Left the theatre with a smile painted on mah face.

(MOVIE REVIEW) Fathom the Magic of Star Cinema’s “Vince and Kath and James”
To be honest, I have low expectations to this year’s entry of Star Cinema to the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival. Not because of anything else but because the selection made by the Festival committee are quite intimidating. Directed by Theodore Boborol (Just the Way You Are, Be My Lady), VINCE and KATH and JAMES is the lone romantic-comedy entry to the 42nd year-old festival. Having said that, I was surprised when Cinema Evaluation Board rated this film with a sparkling “A”. The story is originally written by Jenny Ruth Almocera .
VINCE and KATH and JAMES is the fourth movie I’ve seen, after that very heavy plot of ORO (review on the other link) which left me speechless. To give you a short background of the story, watch the trailer below of VINCE and KATH and JAMES.
I enjoyed all the kilig scenes. Its like reminiscing your old school days and how you handle love and affection during those years. The movie is very light yet will give you goosebumps on their heavy drama scenes. It teaches us the courage to understand the situation presented even if you’re young.
Joshua Garcia is the greatest gainer in this movie. He showed what needs to be seen by the paying audience. He is a combination of a charming yet dramatic newbie paired and troupe with eye candies of this generation. Having said that, a new John Lloyd Cruz is born. I have seen him in Lamasan’s Barcelona this year but his performance here is nothing but an award winning piece.
Boborol was able to changed the predictable plot of romantic comedy movies to something lighter and relatable. Since the story is already available through book book circulation, he made sure that there’s more to see on the big screen. I thought this would be another commercial movies but I was wrong.
The movie earned roughly 18 Million Pesos on its first day of showing. It might not be the best film among the eight contenders but I am impressed with the final product. I enjoyed the entire movie.
Rod Magaru Rating for VINCE and KATH and JAMES: 8/10.

MMFF 2016: 5 things to know about ‘Vince and Kath and James’

This is AI generated summarization, which may have errors. For context, always refer to the full article.
MANILA, Philippines – Star Cinema is known for offering family and comedy films during Christmas season. But for this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), they are offering up a story on today’s millenials, seen from the messages exchanged through cell phones and social media.
Vince and Kath and James is based on the popular online series called Vince and Kath . In the film, Vince (Joshua Garcia), an electrical engineering student, struggles with his feelings for his good friend Kath (Julia Barretto), sending it through text messages instead. Things however become complicated when he seeks the help of his cousin James (Ronnie Alonte), who also starts to like Kath.
In the original series, the story was about Vince and how he reveals his feelings to Kath through their exchange of the text messages.
Here are some facts about the movie and the stars of the film.
1. Director Thedore Boborol and Julia Barretto on Vince and Kath and James being a potential a top grosser. Director Theodore “Ted” Boborol was asked to comment about the possibility that the movie can be one of the MMFF’s potential top grossers. Direk Ted, who is known for shows such as Be My Lady and Annaliza , said:
“At first we are flattered. Syempre nung ginawa namin yung pelikula hindi na namin ini-expect na una, in the first place makapasok kami sa MMFF. Pangalawa, ‘yung prenepredict na top grosser, kaya lang ayaw namin ilagay sa isip namin kasi ang yabang naman nun .
(Of course when we made this film, we never expected that we will be part of the MMFF. Second, the fact that they are predicting we might be one of the top grossers, we would rather not entertain that thought because we will come off very arrogant.)
“ Masaya lang kami na tinanggap kami sa MMFF at gusto namin ibahagi yung kasiyahan namin na nararamdaman namin sa mga manonood.”
(We are happy that the MMFF accepted our entry and we want to show the happiness we are feeling to the viewers.)
Never in my wildest dream. [This is a ] dream come true po talaga ito . Pero dahil yon ang iniisip nil a, syempre eni-embrace na lang po namin . Nagpapasalamat po kami pero syempre iyon din ang prayer namin pero sana suportahan natin lahat ng films.”
(At this point, I’m very happy that we’re in the MMFF. Never in my wildest dream. [This is a ] dream come true for us. Since that’s how they [the people] are thinking, of course we are embracing it. We are very thankful but of course, that’s also our prayer and we hope everyone will support all the films.)
2. This is Julia Barretto’s first time to work with Ronnie Alonte and Joshua Garcia.
“Actually, ito yung first project na makakasama ko si Ronnie at si Joshua at saka first time ko din sila makasama sa isang proyekto . Sobrang saya ko, sobrang natuwa ako na nakabuild ako ng relationship and bond with the two boys and sobrang light nila katrabaho .
(Actually, this is the first project that I will have with Ronnie and Joshua and our first time to be in one project. I’m so happy, very happy because I was able to build a relationship and bond with the two boys, and they are so easy to work with.)
“And walang problema sa set. That’s important siguro dahil importante yung friendship. Siguro it’s the best foundation talaga to create chemistry. So natutuwa ako na may bond kaming tatlo,” she said.
(And there’s no problem on the set, that’s important I guess because of the friendship. I guess it’s the best foundation to create a chemistry. I’m very happy all 3 of us were able to bond.)
Asked how to describe her character Kath in the movie, Julia said: “Si Kath dito …very simple lang dito , very boyish and hindi siya parang soft noh direk? Pero pagdating sa pag-ibig, doon lang siya lumalambot. “
(Kath here is very simple, very boyish and she’s not very soft here. But when it comes to love, that’s when she softens.)
Julia has previously been paired with other leading men such as Enrique Gil, Iñigo Pascual, Sam Concepcion, and Kenzo Gutierrez on TV shows.
The tandem of Julia and Ronnie will also be tested in the upcoming ABS-CBN drama A Love to Last starting January 9.
3. Joshua Garcia on being tagged as the next John Lloyd Cruz. Joshua, who started his career on Pinoy Big Brother: All In and became part of Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita and currently part of The Greatest Love was asked to comment on being tagged as potentially being the next John Lloyd Cruz.
“ Siguro po nakakatuwa po na nakakataba ng puso, na sinasabi nila na na next John Lloyd Cruz ako. Actually, kinikilig ako na tinatawag nila ako kasi idol ko talaga si John Lloyd. Kahit nga yung 1/4 na narating ni Kuya John Lloyd, ay sana marating ko din,” he said.
(I guess I’m happy, and very flattered in my heart, that they are saying that I am the next John Lloyd Cruz. Actually, I get giddy when they call me that because John Lloyd is really my idol. And to reach even a quarter of what Kuya John Lloyd has, I hope to reach it as well.)
4. Ronnie Alonte is in 2 MMFF movies. Ronnie Alonte found himself starring in not one but two films that are part of the film festival. Aside from Vince and Kath and James , Ronnie part of Erik Matti’s Seklusyon .
During the press conference, Ronnie was asked to comment about his involvement in two films.
(For me, I will support all films, let’s watch all of them together. For me, I really plan to watch all of it.)
“ Sabay ko pong ginawa itong movie na ito [at ‘yung Seklusyon] and ang saya ko din po dahil hindi ko inieexpect na dalawa yung makakapasok sa Metro Manila Film Festival.”
(I did both this film [and Seklusyon ] at the same time and I’m happy because I did not expect that both films will be part of the Metro Manila Film Festival.)
Although he’s busy with his film and TV career, Ronnie clarified he will not leave the Hashtags.
“ Kahit ano po mangyari sabi ko nga po sa kanila, kahit maging sobrang busy ako, wala man ako sa tabi nila, basta nandoon pa din ako. Pagka-open ang sched ko pupunta pa rin ako sa Hashtags a t sasayaw pa rin ako ,” he said.
(No matter what happens, I told them, even if I’m busy, I’m not with them all the time, I’m still there. When my schedule is open, I will still go with the Hashtags and dance.)
5. On courtship
Although they are modern girls, Julia and Maris Racal, who plays her best friend Maxine, said they still believe in the tradtional ways of courtship, where it’s important to get to know each other’s families, though of course, dating in modern times now involves texting and social media.
“ Sa akin po , traditional na may hint of courting in a millennial way,” Maris said. “ Kasi para po sa akin, malaking tulong din yung text eh . Kasi pag nagtetext kayo parang may sariling mundo ka and parang kinikilig and parang nakaka-add din siya ng kilig pag nakita muna siya in person.
(For me, I’m for traditional courtship that has a hint of the millenial way. Because for me, texting is also a big help. Because if you text each other, it’s like you have your own world and you also feel those giddy feelings, and it adds to it when you see that person.)
“ Pero syempre yung ligawan, gusto ko idaan sa magulang, sa mga ate. Parang madami siya dadaanan bago sa akin.
(But of course when it comes to courtship, I want it to go through the parents, the sisters. It’s like he will go through a lot of people before me.)
“A nd gusto ko na friend ko siya, kilala ko siya pero gusto ko din nakikita yung effort niya na parang gusto niya ako and na bibisita siya sa bahay ,” Maris said.
(And I want that he’s my friend, that I know him, but I also want to see his effort, like he really likes me and he will visit me at the house.)
Julia agrees with Maris’ statements.
“ I agree with Maris. Parang maganda yung traditional pero dapat casual lang, hindi yung ‘grabe ka sobra ka.’ Okay lang yung traditional and okay din yung how it is with our generation now kasi siguro the texting… nakakakilig siya talaga sa totoo lang … yung mga simple na kung ‘okay ka lang ba sa trabaho’… it means thoughtful yung guy. May pakialam siya sa nangyayari sa buhay mo .
(I agree with Maris. Traditional courtship is nice but it should be more casual, and not like ‘you’re too much.’ Traditional is okay and it’s also okay with what our generation is doing now because with texting, it’ll really get you giddy…like the simple ‘are you okay at work…’ it means the guy is really thoughtful. He cares what’s happening in your life.
“It’s also nice the traditional way kasi siguro makapamilya akong tao (because I’m a family-oriented person), so it’s nice na close yung guy sa family and sa friends ko . So both, it’s actually mixed.”

James V: Katherine review – romance and religion in the court of a volatile manchild
Festival theatre studio, Edinburgh Catriona Faint’s witty performance as a pragmatist caught up in fanatical times is the heart of the latest historical drama from Rona Munro’s James Plays series
A nyone with half an eye on today’s global politics will know bad things happen when religious zealots come face to face. The same is true in our own history, as Rona Munro reminds us in the latest instalment of her James Play saga about Scotland’s Stewart kings.
Compared with the ambitious blockbusters with which she began the series 10 years ago , this episode feels more like a slight if diverting extension of the James Play universe. We have reached 1528 and, reacting to the early stirrings of the Scottish reformation, the Roman Catholic church is treating any opposition as heresy. The first to be burned at the stake is Patrick Hamilton (Benjamin Osugo) in punishment for his Lutheran preaching against the priesthood.
Meanwhile, the infant king James V is reaching maturity, if maturity is what you can call the brattish mix of brains and brutality that characterises him here. Played by a pugnacious Sean Connor, he is a manchild indulged enough to expect obedience, but intelligent enough to realise actions have consequences. His volatility is scary.
Certainly, he is the closest Catriona Faint comes to a match in her role as Katherine Hamilton, sister of the martyred Patrick and a distant cousin of the king. The heart of Munro’s play, she is a pragmatist who cannot fail to be impressed by her brother’s resolve. When suspicion turns on her, she refuses to commit to the church, less out of conviction than a belief in freedom of thought.
Played by Faint with wit and attack, Katherine is a slippery opponent in the ecclesiastical court; certainly more troublesome than Osugo’s Patrick, who is described as a “stubborn, arrogant arse” but comes across as merely dreamy. Directed by Orla O’Loughlin on Becky Minto’s candle-strewn set, the play sets up a fundamentalist battle between an intolerant church and a young woman with a rather modern sense of independence.
It would end as badly as any of today’s conflicts were it not offset by the romance between Katherine and her childhood friend Jenny. Played with plain-speaking honesty by Alyth Ross, she provides Katherine with an escape route to a happy ending that suggests, in case it needs pointing out, that compassion is a better bet than fanaticism.

It doesn't feel real and authentic. But with this movie's script, you will really feel like you're watching real people on screen. They talk the same way that people (teens, in particular) talk in real life. They act like a normal teen in the the real world would act. They think like a real person would think in reality.

In this Star Cinema film, Vince (Joshua Garcia) is an electrical engineering student who starts falling in love with his beautiful friend, Kath (Julia Barretto). However, he can't quite find ways to personally let her know about his feelings, and instead writes them down, including all his frustrations, on a blog through six-word hugot lines.
Vince & Kath & James follows the titular characters (Joshua Garcia as Vince, Julia Barretto as Kath, and Ronnie Alonte as James) in a romantic comedy that has them navigate through life and love, mostly through the medium of text. To be completely honest, this film wasn't something I really looked forward to in this festival. It seemed super cheesy to me, with the concept of being adapted ...
Review: Vince & Kath & James. Few things are as satisfying as a good love story, and if there's anything Filipino cinema has mastered over the decades, it's telling them. There's certainly a lot of dreck—the byproducts of an industry that often sacrifices quality and originality for quantity and star power—but every once in a while ...

MMFF 2016: Vince & Kath & James - Review Admin Jan 3, 2017 'Vince & Kath & James' is no different from other Filipino romantic comedies that has come out. The story is originally written by Jenny Ruth Almocera. VINCE and KATH and JAMES is the fourth movie I've seen, after that very heavy plot of ORO (review on the other link) which left me speechless.
