• Industry Needs The nation has a shortage of social workers, with too many underserved areas. Over the next seven years, national shortages are predicted for the following Direct Practice positions: mental health and substance abuse social workers; health care social workers to assist aging populations; and child, family and school social workers.
• Leadership Opportunities The state of North Carolina currently employs more than 15,000 licensed clinical social workers. The need for such professionally-trained social workers is projected to grow by 9–12% from 2021–2031.

Degree requirements are the same as our campus-based full-time program.

The online MSW degree requires 62 credit hours of graduate study and is divided into two levels: Generalist and Specialization.

• The Generalist Curriculum (29 credit hours) consists of courses related to the following areas: social welfare policy and services, human behavior in the social environment, social research, and social work practice. Students also complete several additional requirements as part of the Generalist Curriculum, including a practicum (@ 400 hours) of supervised practice in an agency setting in their home community and a practicum seminar.
• The Specialization Curriculum (33 credit hours) includes courses that enable students to build on the foundation that they acquired during the Generalist Curriculum. Students choose a concentration — either Direct Practice (DP) or Community, Management, and Policy Practice (CMPP) — and build skills and knowledge in research methodology, policy, and evidence-informed practice. Students will complete courses and a second practicum (@ 600 hours) of supervised practice in an agency setting in their home community. Students complete 9 credit hours in elective courses as part of the specialization curriculum.

Online students complete 400 Generalist and 600 Specialization practicum hours with an agency within their home communities. Through practicum assignments, our students put their classroom knowledge into practice through real-world experiences — exploring career paths, developing workplace skills and competencies, expanding their professional networks, and building confidence in working with clients and colleagues.

Our students have completed placements in social services, schools, hospitals, community nonprofits, research organizations, substance abuse treatment programs, child welfare agencies, transitional housing programs, and a variety of other organizations. We will work individually with students to identify practicum placements that are appropriate to the student’s needs and professional goals.

We are committed to ensuring that all students succeed, which is why our Online MSW program provides the same access to academic resources and support as the School’s campus-based programs. Academic advising is available for all degree-seeking students, providing educational planning assistance to fulfill academic requirements and standards and also further professional career goals. In addition, every online student is assigned a student success coach who advises on the MSW curriculum policies and procedures, helps design plans of study, and clears students for registration each semester. The student success coach and faculty advisor work together to guide academic and professional development.

MSW students often use a combination of funding sources to finance their graduate studies. All applicants are automatically considered for program scholarships. No further action is required in order to be considered for these scholarship opportunities. We also recommend that prospective students submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to be considered for federal aid. Applications for the Online MSW program session beginning August 26, 2024, are open through 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 7. To be considered for admission to UNC School of Social Work, you must provide documentation of the following in your UNC Graduate School application:

• Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, earned from an accredited four-year college or university (or the international equivalent of a bachelor’s degree)

Yes! Our School hosts general information sessions throughout the year for each of our MSW programs. In addition to meeting some of our faculty, staff and students, these sessions provide potential applicants with an overview of the application process. You’ll also learn about our coursework, practicum placements, financial aid, and more. Each information session includes a formal presentation and plenty of opportunities for Q&As.

What To Look For In An MSW Program With No GRE Required

The right MSW for you depends on your professional goals and background. Consider the following factors when researching MSW programs with no GRE requirements:

Accreditation

To earn a social work license , you must graduate from a program with Council on Social Work Education accreditation. Most accredited schools will not accept transfer credits from programs without accreditation. All programs in this list and on this site are accredited.

Cost is a major consideration in finding the right MSW program with no GRE requirements. Public schools often charge tuition at about half the cost of private schools. Some public schools offer in-state rates for all online students, allowing them to pay the same per-credit rates regardless of location.

Financial Aid

Grants, loans, work-study programs, and scholarships can bring expensive programs into students’ financial reach. Prioritize funding methods that do not require payment, like grants and scholarships, over loans.

Admission Requirements

Types of Social Work Programs

3. Advanced Standing Programs

For those who already have a BSW degree, it can be easy and fast to get your Master’s in Social Work at an accredited college. Typically advanced standing degree programs are only three semesters long and allow you to complete all of your requirements to get a master’s without needing any of the introductory courses for the first year.

Students mainly focus on a track of their MSW program during this time, such as human behavior, substance abuse, community planning, youth counseling, or another field.

Licensing for Social Work

Social work also requires that individuals in this field earn a professional license to work. There are a few different licenses available to social workers today, including:

• Advanced Generalist : The LMSW Advanced Generalist license allows you to work in some states where it’s required. This is the highest level of licensure and means that you have passed the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam and additional state requirements to work in this setting.
• Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker : Students have to complete an accredited MSW program, pass a generalist exam, and complete at least 3,000 hours under a supervisor in a clinical experience.
• LCSW : This allows you to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and provide clients with care in a clinical setting. States vary on this requirement, but it usually means that you have completed an MSW.

You can typically finish an MSW degree in 1-2 years, but some programs do require longer coursework depending on your experience and undergraduate degree. For those who are currently working in the field under a BSW degree, the MSW online program coursework typically is accelerated, taking at most 3 semesters to complete.

For those who do not have a BSW or who have not worked in this field, it typically takes 4-6 semesters to complete the coursework and gain the licensure needed to work in your field. Some accelerated programs even offer 1 year MSW programs online with no BSW degree required for admission.

Applicant Requirements

To apply to the GSSW doctoral program, you must have  one  of the following:

• a master's degree conferred by a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
• a master's degree in one of the social sciences and demonstrated evidence of substantial professional experience in the social work field

In addition, you must have:

• a clear interest in developing advanced theory, policy and research skills in a substantive area relevant to the field of social work
• a superior academic record in all previous work
• the maturity, intellectual ability and readiness for advanced study

NOTE: the GRE is no longer required for admission into the PhD program. 

Two years of post-master's practice experience is strongly preferred, but not mandatory.

It is important to have proficiency in descriptive and inferential statistics. This knowledge is necessary for several of the required doctoral courses. An introductory course in statistical analysis and inference is available in the first quarter of study if needed.

You are required to submit three letters of recommendation, preferably from academic, research or professional supervisors/colleagues.

The PhD Admission Committee considers your Statement of Professional and Educational Intent to be a significant part of your application. Respond openly and honestly to each section. The average statement length is seven pages. Double space your statement and put your name in the upper right corner of each page. The statement must be written solely by you without the use of an editor.

Your statement should include the following elements:

• Discuss your qualifications and readiness for pursuing doctoral studies in social work.
• Describe the area(s) of knowledge around which you wish to concentrate your study and research.
• Explain the social justice importance of your area of interest. In other words, how do power, privilege and oppression contribute to dynamics in your area of interest?
• How does your personal, professional, or practice experience inform the area in which you plan to conduct research?
• Describe any cultural, economic, or social challenges and opportunities that influence your lens and perspective in research.
• Describe the professional or academic position you plan to pursue after your PhD and why you have chosen that career goal.
• Explain why you feel this program would be a good match for you.
• Identify any projects at GSSW, or at the University of Denver, in which you have an interest.
• Discuss any other factors you feel are important in our evaluation of your application.

The PhD in Social Work Program invites applications from prospective students who possess a commitment to advancing social work knowledge and enhancing the well-being of vulnerable, urban populations.  Applications for full- and part-time study are accepted from September through February in order to begin classes the following fall semester.  There are two application deadlines:  December 15 is the early application deadline and February 15 is the final deadline.  Applicants who meet the December 15th deadline will receive an admission decision by the end of January and are eligible to be nominated for University Fellowships.  Applicants who meet the February 15th deadline will receive an admission decision by mid- to late March.

For consideration for admission to the PhD in Social Work Program, you must be admitted to both the UIC Graduate College and the Jane Addams College of Social Work Doctoral Program. To complete the necessary application, all of the following materials should be electronically submitted via the  UIC Graduate Application Document process.

Submit the contact information for your references by using the reference form on your online application checklist. Once you submit the email addresses for your references the university will automatically contact the references by email to request an electronic letter of recommendation. Submit Undergraduate and Graduate Transcripts

Upload and submit electronically to your application checklist the transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended. To submit transcripts we recommend that applicants request academic transcripts from each college attended be sent to their home. Those transcripts should then be opened, scanned and saved to a computer or other storage device, and finally retrieved and uploaded to the application checklist. Upon admission applicants will be prompted to submit official versions of the same transcripts.

Applicants Whose Native Language is not English

Applicants whose native language is not English must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the exam of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Person’s PTE Academic. Though not required, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores may be submitted if you wish. GRE scores must be submitted directly to the University of Illinois at Chicago (Institution Code 1851-5001). What Can You Do With a Doctorate of Social Work? 

Social work has a wide variety of careers and salary ranges . Make sure that you meet the minimum educational requirements and obtain the correct license to be considered for your desired position, whether that is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensed master social worker (LMSW) or other role. Certain social work positions require an LCSW or LMSW license , whereas others, like post-secondary teaching, may require a DSW. Upon graduating with a DSW, you may pursue a number of careers, including:

• Advanced Practice Social Worker : This professional often specializes in specific practice areas and may consult or supervise other social work professionals. They may work to set policies at local or national levels, or they might work in education. They are qualified to practice independently and make referrals to other specialists.
• Child Welfare Permanency Worker : This professional is also known as an adoption worker. Their role involves assessing prospective homes for children in foster care or under state supervision. They also assist with the child’s transition into the home and referrals for post-adoptive care.
• Nonprofit Director : This professional oversees the direction of a social service nonprofit. This includes legal, financial, program and management oversight. The nonprofit director often reports to a board of directors.
• Professor of Social Work : This professional teaches courses and performs research in social work at a college or university. A social work professor may begin their career as an assistant professor  and later be eligible for a tenure-track position.
• School Social Worker : This professional works collaboratively with teachers and staff at elementary, middle or high schools to eliminate barriers to education and address issues that could impact students’ well-being both in and outside the school environment. • Social and Community Service Manager : This professional plans, directs or coordinates the activities of a social service program or community outreach organization. They are also responsible for managing the program or organization’s budget and setting policies related to participant involvement, program requirements and benefits.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual pay for social workers in 2022 was $55,350, with the highest 10% of workers earning more than $87,300. The median annual salary for postsecondary social work teachers in 2022 was $80,840, according to the BLS.

Earning potential will vary since social work salaries usually depend on employer, location, job title, years of experience, education level and other factors.

While a DSW is not required practice in the field, it is commonly regarded as a symbol of advanced education surpassing the standard level attained by most social workers, which is the master’s degree or MSW . Not necessarily. While some programs require that you have a  master’s in social work , other programs accept related degrees, such as a master’s in psychology or counseling. However, if you do have an MSW, it should be from a CSWE-accredited program.

For leaders looking to solve problems that impact large populations and address social work issues on a large scale, a Doctorate of Social Work is a step beyond the PhD . The curriculum for a DSW may include courses like leadership and management in complex social systems and advanced social work policy and practice. Since a PhD in social work prepares students to become educators, researchers or scholars, the program may include courses such as social justice, contemporary social problems and values and the social work profession.

Most DSW programs may take around three years to complete as a full-time student. A part-time DSW program, on the other hand, will likely take longer. Part-time programs are designed to accommodate students who work full time or have other obligations.

Tailoring Your Social Work Degree

The program offers two entry points — the one that’s best for you will depend on your educational background and experience prior to enrollment.

Our online Master of Social Work Foundation program  is intended for those looking to refocus or pivot their careers. This 17-course, 62-credit track is open to all eligible students with a bachelor’s degree and can be completed in as few as 10 semesters (40 months).

Students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited university within the past 5 years may be eligible for our online Master of Social Work — Advanced Standing program . This 10-course, 36-credit-hour track can be completed in as few as two years (six semesters). It offers an accelerated pathway where students explore strategies to help people in marginalized communities gain better access to social services.

Online MSW Field Practicums

Ohio University’s Online MSW program has established relationships with over 500 agencies nationwide. Students attending the program will work with the Department of Social Work online field faculty to identify appropriate field placement settings in their geographic area.

Faculty Spotlight

Ken Larimore, Ph.D; LISW-S

Study social work online with Ohio University and learn from faculty members actively making an impact in the field. Dr. Larimore has worked at Ohio University from 2010 until 2018 (6 years as the SW program coordinator at Ohio University-Chillicothe) and returned in 2022 to serve as the Online MSW Director. Dr. Larimore began teaching online in 2009 and taught for four Universities online (one full-time as an instructor and mentor to 250 adjunct online faculty). Dr. Larimore continues to supervise former Ohio University students for their LISW licensure.

Before coming to Ohio University, Dr. Larimore spent 25 years in treatment foster care and working in the mental health field. Dr. Larimore is excited to be a part of the MSW online program's growth and looks forward to working with the online students.

Yes. Ohio University’s MSW degree program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The 62-credit MSW Foundation track can be completed in as little as 10 semesters. The MSW Advanced Standing Program comprises 10 courses (36 total semester credit hours) and can be completed in as little as six semesters (two years).

The Advanced Standing track requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program completed within the past five years. All other applicants will need to apply for the foundations track.
