Program Overview

With a graduate certificate in  Project Management , you'll be able to manage project scopes, changes, innovation, goal setting, project management, staffing, risk management, use project management tools, and perform other tasks in careers that involve project management or as a project manager on your own. You can look forward to a rewarding career in varied positions like a junior project manager, team leader, project coordinator, or project analyst.

Full Description

Upon graduating from the Project Management program, you’ll be armed with the knowledge and skills to succeed in business and project management. As part of your learning experience, you’ll implement Project Management Institute knowledge areas like processes, lifecycle phases and the embodied concepts, and other tools and techniques. As issues arise both internally and externally, you’ll learn how to adapt your project in response. 

Here are some skills you’ll be able to show off after completion of the Project Management postgraduate program: 

  • Applying project management practices to the launch of new programs, initiatives, products, services, and events that meet stakeholder demands 
  • Aligning a project to an organization's strategic plans 
  • Helping projects succeed by implementing business concepts, practices, and tools 
  • Adapting project management practices to suit stakeholders from multiple industries

Your Field Education Options

PMP and CAPM Certifications

George Brown College is recognized as a Global Registered Education Provider with the Project Management Institute (PMI ® ). Graduates of any of the George Brown College courses listed on PMI’s Registered Education Provider portal will have satisfied the education requirements necessary to apply to the Project Management Institute (PMI ® ) for either the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM ® ) or the Project Management Professional (PMP ® ) certification.

Project Management Professional (PMP) ®

The PMI’s PMP certification is an important industry-recognized certification for project managers. To apply for the PMP, you need to have either:

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or the global equivalent) with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education. You will well exceed the 35 hours education requirement upon completion of the B415 Project Management program.
  • A four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education. You will well exceed the 35 hours education requirement upon completion of the B415 Project Management program.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) ®

PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is an entry-level certification for project practitioners. To apply for the CAPM, you need to have: A secondary degree (high school diploma or the global equivalent) and at least 1,500 hours of project experience, OR 23 hours of project management education by the time you sit for the exam. You will well exceed the 35 hours education requirement upon completion of the B415 Project Management Program. The CAPM exam is 150 multiple-choice questions.

Although the B415 program is not a preparation course for writing the PMP or CAPM exams, these exams draw on materials found in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK version 6), which is published by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The course materials in the B415 program are also based on information found in PMBOK version 6. Therefore, the B415 Project Management Program will assist students preparing for the PMP or CAPM exams, by learning tools, techniques and concepts directly related to questions that appear on the PMP and CAPM exams.

There are many pathways into the Project Management Graduate Certificate B415 program including work, college programs and university programs. After graduating from the program, students can begin their career or further their education through professional credentials or designations.

In order to graduate from the B415 program , you need to complete 9 mandatory courses.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Manage the scope, cost, timing, and quality of the project, at all times focused on project success as defined by project stakeholders.
  • Align the project to the organization's strategic plans and business justification throughout its lifecycle.
  • Identify project goals, constraints, deliverables, performance criteria, control needs, and resource requirements in consultation with stakeholders.
  • Implement the PMI project management knowledge areas, processes, lifecycle phases and the embodied concepts, tools and techniques in order to achieve project success.
  • Adapt projects in response to issues that arise internally and externally.
  • Interact with team and stakeholders in a professional manner, respecting differences, to ensure a collaborative project environment.
  • Utilize technology tools for communication, collaboration, information management and decision support.
  • Implement general business concepts, practices and tools to facilitate project success.
  • Reflect on their role and effectiveness as a leader and follower.
  • Apply appropriate legal and ethical standards.
  • Adapt project management practices to meet the needs of stakeholders from multiple sectors of the economy (i.e., manufacturing, technology, consulting, government, arts, media and not-for-profit organizations).
  • Apply project management practices to the launch of new programs, initiatives, products, services and events relative to the needs of stakeholders.
  • Appraise the role of project management in organizational change.

Management (PhD)

The management PhD program is central to the mission of the Asper School of Business at UM. Students are mentored in their research program and in the development of teaching skills. Asper PhD graduates go on to fulfill the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics.

The PhD program is central to the mission of the Asper School of Business at UM. The program was founded in 1990 and our commitment reflects the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics   The AACSB-accredited program has already fulfilled the expectations of students and faculty and continues to attract highly-qualified individuals who are interested in developing their research and teaching skills.

The PhD program in management is designed to produce graduates who have competitive research and teaching skills and the abilities necessary for placement in teaching positions in Canada and the world.

Expected duration: 4 years

Tuition and fees:  Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees .)

Throughout their doctoral studies, students are engaged in research apprenticeships with the faculty. Students are assured of working with faculty members on several projects during their program and are required to spend a specific number of hours per week working for a faculty member during the term and in the summer. In this way, students are assured of receiving hands-on experience with the research process.

Students are expected to publish conference papers or journal articles during their program. Travelling to conferences and presenting research is a great way to meet other researchers in your field and gain exposure for your work.

Because the PhD program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue an academic career, a teaching practicum is required to help students develop teaching skills.

Program requirements

The PhD program consists of 30-39 credit hours of courses plus a thesis.

  • All PhD students must complete both core and other course requirements.
  • The core course are comprised of 12 credit hours (four courses) and are based on the student's departmental concentration area in the list outlined below.  
  • The core course requirements must be completed regardless of previous professional and/or academic background. (some of the other course requirements may be waived based on previous courses completed in a Masters program).
  • All students must complete PHDM 7140 Management Research Project 1 (a theoretical paper) and PHDM 7150 Management Research Project 2 (an empirical paper), both of which are zero credit, pass/fail courses.   
  • MKT 7110 Doctoral Seminar in Marketing
  • MKT 7120 Doctoral Seminar in Buyer Behaviour
  • MKT 7080 Research Design and Methods
  • MKT 7100 Selected Topics in Marketing

Business Administration

One (1) three (3) credit hour course from: 

  • GMGT 7410 Organizational Behaviour;
  • GMGT 7440 Organizational Theory; or, 
  • GMGT 7530 Strategy.

Three (3) additional three (3) credit hour courses from: 

  • GMGT 7440 Organizational Theory; 
  • GMGT 7410 Organizational Behaviour; 
  • GMGT 7530 Strategy; or 

Topics courses in the area of organizational behaviour, organization theory, strategy, entrepreneurship, international business, industrial relations and human resource management.

Other course requirements (for all streams) may be required and could include:  

  • 1 Philosophy of Science in Management course PHDM 7110 (Note:  Finance students are exempt from this requirement) (3 credit hours);
  • 3 Methods or Statistics courses (9 credit hours; or up to 6 courses [18 credit hours] for Finance);
  • 2 minor/cognate courses (at least one of which is outside the Asper School of Business; 6 credit hours or up to 3 courses [9 credit hours] for Finance students)

Since students completing an Asper School of Business Ph.D. will be conducting research and teaching in topics related to management, they will be required to have a basic breadth of knowledge in management. Students with a previous business degree will not be required to complete this requirement, but students without a business degree will be required to audit at least one (1) and up to three (3) courses, preferably at the 7000 level, outside their core area in business.   

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the PhD in management program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Those applying to the Asper PhD in management program should possess:

  • An earned Master's degree from a recognized institution in a management or business discipline, or in a cognate or foundational disciplinary area (e.g. psychology, sociology, economics, mathematics), with minimum 3.0 G.P.A.;
  • A minimum 600 GMAT score (or GRE equivalent);
  • English Language Test score, where applicable
  • Three letters of reference
  • Appropriate research interest and capability as evidenced by a statement of purpose; and,
  • A thesis from a recognized institution;
  • A major research paper from a recognized institution;
  • An independently completed research article published in a refereed journal;
  • An independently completed research working paper presented at a conference; and/or
  • Other evidence of an appropriate nature, such as written class research projects and term papers.

In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

Applications for the PhD program are accepted once a year for Fall entry. Applications must be completed online and include several parts:

  • CV or resume
  • Statement of intent
  • GMAT or GRE, with a minimum score of 600
  • 3 letters of recommendation from academic references
  • Proof of English language proficiency , if required

The Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto is home to Canada’s premier management doctoral program, one of the top-ranked PhD programs in the world. The Graduate Department of Management offers a world-class doctoral program. Applicants may enter the PhD program via one of two routes: 1) following completion of an appropriate master’s degree or 2) direct entry following completion of a bachelor’s degree.

PhD Program

Minimum admission requirements.

Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants to all fields must also satisfy the Rotman School's additional admission requirements stated below.

Some depth in the cognate disciplines relevant to the field is required.

These requirements may be satisfied prior to entry to the PhD program through an MBA degree program coupled with a relevant undergraduate degree, or through an undergraduate degree in business, management, or commerce coupled with a discipline-based master's degree.

If the depth requirements are completed prior to entry to the PhD program, then the student is expected to complete the program in four years. If additional coursework is required, then the student may need an additional year to complete the program.

Applicants should provide:

transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended

a letter of intent for applying to the PhD program

an updated curriculum vitae (CV)

two reference letters

a valid GMAT or GRE score (optional)

proof of English-language proficiency, if applicable.

Program Requirements

Students are expected to be qualified in the three basic disciplines essential to the study of management: economics, behavioural science, and quantitative analysis/statistics.

Students in all fields normally complete coursework in one field and two areas of study during Years 1 and 2. In subsequent years of study, students concentrate on deepening knowledge through additional coursework and on generating unprecedented insights through research that culminates in a written doctoral thesis.

Coursework . Students must complete a minimum of 4.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) to satisfy requirements for one field and two areas of study.

A minimum of 2.0 FCEs comprise the field. These will normally be taken from 3000-level Management courses, but additional courses from other departments may be required.

2.0 FCEs: courses in the two areas of study are usually taken in cognate departments. Each area of study comprises at least 1.0 FCE.

Upon completion of the courses, students are expected to pass comprehensive examinations in the field.

Successful completion of the required course RSM3080H Research Methods in Business (0.5 FCE).

A thesis embodying the results of original investigation must be submitted and defended at a Doctoral Final Oral Examination in accordance with the regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.

During all years of study, students must maintain residency , whereby students are on campus full-time and consequently in geographical proximity to be able to participate fully in the University activities associated with the program.

Program Length

Phd program (direct-entry).

Some depth in the cognate disciplines relevant to the field of study is required.

If the depth requirements are completed prior to entry to the PhD program, then the student is expected to complete the program in five years. If additional coursework is required, then the student may need an additional year to complete the program.

In exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the Rotman School, admission to the program by direct entry may be approved for applicants with an appropriate bachelor’s degree with high standing (a least an A- average in courses relevant to the discipline) from a recognized university.

Coursework . Students must complete a minimum of 6.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) to satisfy requirements for one field and two areas of study. Direct-entry students must complete 2.0 of the 6.5 FCEs within Year 1.

A minimum of 2.0 FCEs in the field. These will normally be taken from 3000-level Management courses, but additional courses from other departments may be required.

2.0 FCE: courses in the two areas of study are usually taken in cognate departments. Each area of study comprises at least 1.0 FCE.

An additional 2.0 FCEs in any field related to the student's program of study.

Each year, the Rotman PhD program at the University of Toronto selects a small number of outstanding candidates who will go on to make significant contributions to management research and education. The admission selection process is highly competitive: on average only 15-20 doctoral students are admitted from a pool of 400-500 applicants. 

The faculty admission teams in each area look for excellent academic records that include strong backgrounds in relevant disciplines and/or previous work experience related to the intended area of concentration. Program overview.

Outstanding students pursuing excellence should consider the Management (PhD Thesis) program. The degree gives them the opportunity to undertake challenging research under the supervision of highly skilled faculty members, giving students the boost they need to make a significant and lasting contribution to the field of management. The Haskayne School of Business helps students achieve this goal by providing a collaborative, supportive and intellectually stimulating research environment for the discovery and dissemination of knowledge applicable to the business community. The Haskayne funding package is one of the most generous among Canadian business schools.

Completing this program

Core Courses: Topics include Conceptual Framework of the Enterprise and Research Development.

Areas of Study:  Students complete a minimum of five courses in their area(s) of study; students may have a major and minor area of study.

Research Methods and Statistics - Stream A:  This stream includes courses in econometrics and operations management.

Research Methods and Statistics - Stream B:  This stream includes courses in multivariate analysis, research methodology and methods and more.

Candidacy:  Students will complete a research proposal and both oral and written candidacy exams.

Thesis:  Students will be required to submit and defend an original research thesis.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

  • A current C.V.
  • A personal statement outlining objectives, intent and commitment to a research program

Test scores

Completion of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT*) with a recommended minimum score of 650, with high scores on both verbal and quantitative subcomponents. (Many successful applicants have earned scores of 700 and above). As an alternative to a GMAT score, results on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) will be considered. Overall GRE test score in the 85th percentile is the recommended minimum.

Supervisors must have availability and resources for the area in which the student wishes to study.

Minimum education

An MBA degree or equivalent.

Reference letter

Work samples, english language proficiency.

An applicant whose primary language is not English may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ibt)  score of 97 (Internet-based, with no section less than 20).
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  score of 7.0 (minimum of 6.0 in each section).
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)   score of 68, or higher (Academic version).
  • Canadian Academic English Language test (CAEL)  score of 70 (70 in some sections – up to the program, 60 in all other).  
  • Academic Communication Certificate (ACC)  score of A- in one or two courses (up to the program), “B+” on all other courses.  
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency  minimum score of 191.

Faculty Profile: Dr. Davar Rezania

A recognized expert in project management and leadership, Dr. Davar Rezania is the chair of the Department of Management at the Lang School. His research on accountability and project management has been published in top academic journals across the world. He received his PhD in management sciences from ESADE Business School, in Spain.

MPM Admission Requirements

We are currently accepting applications for the  May 2025  intake. We only offer one intake each year which begins in the Summer semester. 

  • Four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university
  • At least a B- average in your last two years of full-time study ( International Students may use this  guide  to compare grade equivalency)
  • Three years (minimum) of work experience in a related field

If you do not meet the above requirements, you may still be admitted to the program if you possess the following;

  • Three-year degree/diploma from a recognized university/college, and
  • At least a B- average in your last two years of study, and/or an acceptable professional designation, and
  • Five years (minimum) of work experience in a related field showing progressive levels of responsibility.

A GMAT/GRE is not required.

Proof of  English proficiency  is required for applicants whose first language is not English . Please note that test scores must be valid for the start of the program.

Application deadlines for Summer 2025 admission:

  • November 1, 2024 -- submission of the  online application form
  • November 15, 2024 -- submission of all required supporting documents

Tuition Cost and Program Fees

The cost of the Lang Master of Project Management program is $31,433.58 (domestic), and $38,933.00 (international) and covers your tuition, meals and accommodation during your on-campus learning experiences.  Please note:  there is no adjustment to the program fees if a student elects not to stay on campus.

* Tuition and fees are billed by Student Financial Services with a program fee model (tuition is billed and paid via a set schedule as opposed to being billed by course). Program fees are billed over each semester, and include compulsory and program fees, tuition and in-course learning resources (not including required textbook costs).

This program is not eligible for Provincial student aid (OSAP) and as a professional graduate program, no funding is offered to students enrolled. Students are expected to self-fund the total cost of their program. 

An application fee of  $150 CAD  is payable to the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC) directly when submitting your application. This application fee cannot be waived.

In October of 2021, the Master of Science in Project Management accreditation was re-affirmed for the maximum five-year accreditation cycle (originally accredited in 2009) by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC) , the world's leading association for project management professionals. Accreditation is achieved by meeting the GAC’s rigorous standards, which include an assessment of program objectives and outcomes, a review of onsite and online resources, evaluations of faculty and students, and proof of continuous improvements in the area of project management.

Graduates of our GAC-accredited program are granted a substantial 12-month reduction credit toward the experience requirement when they complete an application for any PMI certification. This means that those applying for the PMI certification will only need 24 months of project management experience, instead of 36 months as outlined by GAC. This new benefit applies retroactively to our program’s initial accreditation date of 2009.

According to PMI, through the decade ending in 2020, 15.7 million new project management roles will be created. The profession is expected to grow by US $6.61 trillion. Now is the time for professionals and job-seekers to build project management skills, as demand for these skills outstrips supply.

  • Growth in the project-intensive sectors of manufacturing, business services, finance and insurance, oil and gas, information services, construction, and utilities

In 10 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom) with established or quickly developing project-intensive sectors, project management roles are expected to grow by 13.4 million through 2020.
