IELTS Writing Task 2 – Recycle – Band 9

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Write at least 250 words. (waste = rubbish, garbage, trash)

Certain individuals argue that there is a lack of home rubbish being recycled in the public and that the only remedy for this is to implement national regulations and fines. To what degree do you believe that people’s recycling and disposal habits need to be managed by government law?

TOPIC = Maximizing recycling in the home

Controlling idea = the requirements, especially government regulation to achieve maximizing recycling at home

What does it mean to maximize recycling in the home?

A: To reuse, reduce and recycle waste thereby minimizing the number of materials that end up in landfills.

Why would we want to minimize domestic garbage?

A: To preserver resources and protect the environment and ultimately to ensure our way of life and survival.

How can we achieve this goal of minimizing waste and maximizing recycling in the home?

A: raising awareness, government regulations and fines, taking responsibility for ourselves and others.

CONTROLLING IDEA:

Why may it be necessary for society to implement government regulation to maximize recycling in the home?

Because many people are irresponsible and their actions impacts all of society negatively

To create a standard structure of expectation for recycling

People are more likely to recycle

Why not just give people a chance to learn from school, tv, social media and come to their own realization that maximizing recycling is important?”

Society is running out of time to learn slowly – it needs to be done fast

*Keep in mind “universal constraints and needs of humanity” when you are thinking about your thesis points for persuasive essays – task 2 – *Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

THESIS: I strongly believe that government regulations are required to force people to increase their domestic recycling habits because of irresponsibility and time.

INTRODUCTION

(Hook) Recycling household waste is expected in society. (Background) People need to reuse, reduce and recycle their domestic rubbish not only to protect the environment but also to ensure the future prosperity of humankind. (THESIS) I strongly believe that government regulations are required to force people to increase their domestic recycling habits because of irresponsibility and time.

BODY 1 – Topic sentence – What should it include? Define the need of laws to manage irresponsibility of recycling.

Since many individuals neglect their duty to recycle a lot of rubbish, government laws are need to force them to act in the interest of themselves, the public and the planet. (Explain this – use quantitative language) Frequently, people around the world throw plastic bottles, tin cans, and glass containers into their general rubbish which should otherwise be separated into recycling bins, and authorities can make this an obligation by imposing strict, 1000-dollar fines, for those who do not separate their recyclables appropriately. (Specific example) In my neighborhood, I have seen recycling increase threefold since the Canadian government established strict laws for residents that do not recycle their waste. (Connecting sentence) This is one of two reasons that governments must regulate domestic recycling.

BODY 2 – topic 🡪 government regulation is needed because people are out of time.

Our planet cannot cope with the rate of pollution generated by humanity and societies are running out of time to save the environment so government intervention is needed to speed up the process. (E) The rate of land, water and air pollution is extensive and is causing global warming and land, air and water pollution is rapidly increasing leading to global warming and the death of flora and fauna. Without putting a quick stop to this process the planet, and humanity along with it, suffers and dies in a matter of decades, and it is up to elected authorities to curtail this phenomena with heavy fines and consequences for those households which contribute to this problem. Example – Due to the contribution of the increased consumption and waste of domestic waste, global temperature has risen by over 1 degrees average in the last year; at this rate, humanity cannot survive another half century. When governments regulate this behavior with 1000-dollar fines they force people to change their habits within a matter of weeks rather than years.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, many people do not care enough about recycling and the planet is simply running out of time for humans to recycle sufficiently. Therefore, I strongly support the idea of government regulation to increase domestic recycling practices. In the end, it is better to force people to pay a fine now than to pay with their lives later in a world which can no longer sustain life.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could. Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

It is quite significant to recycle the waste product in an environment friendly manner, yet many  countries fail to do the same. There are several reasons why people do not focus on recycling and proper steps should be taken to change such a scenario.

First of all, most people do not understand the need and importance of recycling. They are ignorant of the process of recycling and are least bothered to know where and how their garbage is being disposed. Moreover, most people are so busy in their own lives that they do not have the  time to act responsibly and take care of such things. To cap it all, in many countries even government does not try to bring an improvement so that the recycling can be done on a larger scale. In a recent survey; conducted by the Times magazine of India, it was observed that 8 out of 10 people do not really know about the significance of recycling .

recycling ielts essay topic

To combat the above problem, lots of steps can be taken. Government should try and create forums where people can be educated about the significance of recycling. A chapter related to this topic should be included in the school curriculum so that citizens become responsible at an early age. Government can also start some programmes so that the rubbish can be recycled at a larger scale and the environment is made clean.  For example, The new Prime minister of India Mr Narendra Modi initialized a programme named “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”, which means clean India. This programme focuses on keeping the country clean and propagates the need of recycling the rubbish products. Now, various societies are setting up collection processes so that most of the waste products are recycled in an eco friendly manner.

In conclusion, it can be said that with increasing population all over the world , waste management is an important process and every country should try to maximize the recycling of rubbish.

In the first stage , waste bottles are deposited at collection points, where they are loaded onto trucks for delivery to a glass recycling facility.

The second stage begins with the process of cleaning the bottles with high-pressure water, and they are then separated into a clear, green and brown glass. This is then broken into pieces in the glass factory and passed through a furnace, where they are burned at a temperature of 600 to 800 degrees Celsius. This recycled glass is transformed into liquid form, and it is joined with new liquid glass, ready for moulding into a bottle shape.

In the final stage , the new bottles are used for different products, ready for sale in supermarkets or shops.

Thank you in advance. Could you please correct me if I made any mistakes. The diagram illustrates the process by which wasted glass bottles are recycled. Overall, It consists of three stages, starting with the input of used glass bottles and ending with the finished product transported to the supermarket for consumption. At the first stage in the process, the used bottles are dispatched to collection points. After that, they are conveyed by the transport vehicle to the recycling facility. In the subsequent stage, the high-pressure water cleans the bottles. Color classification is the next step before breaking it into small glass pieces in the glass factory. Next, the glass cullet is heated in the furnace, where can vary in temperature from 600 to reach 800 degrees Celsius to be transformed into the liquid state. From this, it and new liquid glass are cooled and are formed by the mould. At the last stage, the empty bottles are filled and become a finished product, then distributed to the supermarkets for sale.

IELTS Essay: Recycling

Some people claim that not enough waste from homes is recycled and that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

1.  Many today would claim that the optimal method to encourage individuals to recycle more often is for governments to legally enforce it.  2.  In my opinion, there are subtler approaches governments could take though this reform would undoubtedly be effective.

  • Paraphrase the overall essay topic.
  • Write a clear opinion.

1.  The principle rationale in favor of this argument is that only governments can force the average person to act when there are pressing social concerns.  2.  The world is facing an uncertain future because of increasingly severe environmental problems largely related to overpopulation and human activity.  3.  Therefore, governments can justifiably compel their citizens to contribute to the solution by recycling.  4.  At the moment, only a small proportion of households recycle consistently but a law that required all families to separate and categorize their garbage would undeniably help combat climate change.  5.  This is best evidenced in nations where residents do recycle frequently and the environment is not as direly threatened, such as in Japan.

  • Write a topic sentence with a clear main idea at the end.
  • Explain your main idea.
  • Develop it with specific or hypothetical examples.
  • Keep developing it fully.
  • Short sentences can make your writing clearer.
  • State the fullest possible result.

1.  However, the public backlash to this reform could be avoided with more nuanced reforms.  2.  Instead of forcing all households to recycle the government could institute a variety of reforms such as offering incentives to companies that recycle, educating young people about the benefits of recycling, and making recycling in schools a point of emphasis.  3.  These minor alterations to existing policy would allow the general public to slowly transition to a more sustainable lifestyle and avoid any potential controversy.  4.  If, on the other hand, the reforms were strictly mandated, there is a strong chance that in nations like the United States where individuals are protective of their civil liberties, the government might do more harm than good in the short-term.

  • Write a new topic sentence with a new main idea at the end.
  • Explain your new main idea.
  • Include specific details and examples.
  • Add as much information as you can and make sure it links logically.

1.  In conclusion, though compulsory recycling is a well-intentioned aim, it should not be prioritized over less invasive regulations.  2.  In this way, governments will be able to achieve long-term success without alienating the public.

  • Summarise your main ideas.
  • Include a final thought.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: RECYCLING [ANSWERS]

RECYCLE / RECYCLING

Do you practice recycling? Why or why not?

(Answer 1)

Definitely! I’m an untiring advocate of environmental protection – I spread awareness about the importance of recycling in our community and I’m proud to say that all my efforts have paid off. I’ve seen such good results that our town has been awarded as the cleanest and the most environment-friendly. I really do hope that more and more people will give value to protecting the environment.

(Answer 2)

Yes, I do because I’m a responsible citizen. I recycle things like PET bottles and aluminum cans and I use them as flower pots. Also, my pen holders are made of milk and juice cartons. I really find ways to practice the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle, and I avoid using plastic bags when I go shopping. These are just my little ways to help conserve the environment.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Untiring [adj.] – energetic; vigorous

Advocate [noun] – a person who supports a particular cause

Pay-off [phrase] – yield good results; succeed

PET bottles [noun] – PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are bottles that can be recycled and used to manufacture new bottles

Conserve [verb] – protect from harm or destruction

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a direct positive answer but not saying the traditional ‘yes’, instead uses a good expression that means a yes. He talked about his advocacy and provided details about it which helped him speak at length. Then simply ended his answer by expressing his hope.    ii.) The speaker also gave a positive answer and then proceeded to talking about the things that he usually recycled. To make his answer more believable, he gave several examples that would best explain his answer. Those words he used serve as topic vocabulary which is definitely helpful to boost his mark in the criterion, Lexical Resource.

Did you learn about recycling when you were a child?

(Answer 1)

Yes of course! The importance of recycling is often taught in primary school as it’s part of science education. Besides, when I was little, my mom was really strict in making me recycle some things, so I got used to doing it. If I hadn’t been taught about recycling, I wouldn’t have cared about the environment as much as I do these days.

Yes, because that’s one of the important topics in our science class. I remember our science teacher asked us to create something out of recycled materials and I made a bookcase made of egg trays. That project was really enlightening since we realized that even in our own little & simple ways we could protect our environment from destruction.

Primary school [noun] – a school for children between the ages of about five and eleven

Get used to [phrase] – to become familiar with

Out of [preposition] – to indicate the origin, source, cause

Enlightening [verb] – give greater knowledge and understanding about a subject or situation

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a confident answer  – he started answering the question by sharing his experience with recycling since he was a child. To add a little more, he talked about how his mom made him practice recycling, then simply ended his answer by using a conditional tense to express his wonder.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker answered positively and stated that recycling was an important topic in science. He then recalled one experience he had in which he needed to create a certain school project in which he needed to use recycling materials. That’s a very good way to extend his answer as he’s able to talk more about the essence of recycling.

What kind of things do you recycle?

As I said earlier, I make sure to reuse bottles, cartons, plastic bags, containers, and paper. I’ve been doing this since I was a grader. Actually, it has become my habit and I’m loving it. Besides, I get a sense of fulfillment in recycling.

  Grader [noun] – primary schooler

Sense of fulfillment [expression] – the feeling of happiness and satisfaction

i.) The speaker simply reiterated his answer to the former question he was asked. However, to make his answer a little bit longer and better, he just talked about the time he started recycling and how it impacted his life. Brief answer and organized!

Will you keep recycling in the future?

That’s for sure! Who wouldn’t want to? We all should be responsible for protecting our environment and recycling is one of the easy ways we can do at home to contribute to the reduction of pollution. I should practice recycling, you should do recycling, and we all should oblige ourselves to recycle things to improve the condition of our environment. Isn’t it great if we work hand in hand in saving Mother Earth?

Honestly, I don’t recycle much these days and I know that that’s not right, so from now on I’ll change my ways and I’ll be more concerned and serious about environmental protection through recycling. I’ll also bear in mind that my own little ways will certainly have a huge impact on the environment. In addition,  I’ll remind myself that the future generation is worthy of having a better environment.

Reduction [noun] – the act of minimizing something

Oblige [verb] – require

Hand in hand [expression] – to work closely together

Change one’s ways [expression] – to improve one’s habit, action, belief

Bear in mind [phrase] – to remind

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker used a very natural expression to express a positive answer which was followed by a rhetorical question. He then transitioned to stating that everyone had the responsibility of taking care of the environment and again ended his answer with a rhetorical question.

ii.) ANSWER 2:  The speaker expressed his honesty about not recycling as much as he needed to. However, he talked about what he could do to be more helpful in conserving the environment. That’s a very good technique for him to extend his answer in a more meaningful way. You can also do that so you can speak at length.

Tips for IELTS Speaking part 1

Many students wonder how long their answers in Part 1 should be.

There is no clear answer to this, but generally speaking, I would say 3 to 4 sentences.

I actually think it is better to think of time, rather than sentences because we all speak at different speeds.

So speak for up to 20 seconds for each Part 1 answer.

Practice speaking for 20 seconds – put your timer on!

This will help you ‘feel’ how long 20 seconds last.

Remember also, to talk about you !

Try it now with these questions.

Do you recycle?

What do you recycle?

Did you recycle as a child?

Things we recycle

When it comes to recycling , we can recycle …

Common recyclables are…

  • Paper / cardboard / boxes
  • Food / leftovers (uneaten food)
  • Batteries
  • Used oil

By putting it into separate containers/bins

When it comes to re-using, we can make good use of old clothes

Selling second-hand clothes online is all the rage (=very fashionable) now

We can pass old clothes down to younger siblings

When it comes to re-using, we can make good use of notebooks and magazines

These can be used for craftwork projects or activities with kids.

IELTS Speaking Topic Recycle

Student's questions about recycling

Keith, will you recycle in the future?

To be honest, I think, I am gonna recycle more and more in the future.   On the one hand, the systems that the government has are being refined and polished and getting better and better , which makes it easier for me to recycle.   But also, I think there is a dire need (= an important need) for people generally to recycle more to save the environment.   So I want to do my bit (=make my contribution) to help conserve the environment and I think recycling is gonna play a key role in doing that.   So I will undoubtedly recycle more in the future.

Keith, how can you raise awareness about recycling in your town?

Well, I think it ’ s really important for young people and old people  alike , to learn more about recycling and how important it can be.   So I think one of the key things I would do, is I would, first of all , do a    social media campaign , maybe with some memes and some videos,   showing people how to recycle.  T hat ’ s probably the most important thing, but then also, showing them   the impact, the positive impact of recycling , and I think that ’ s a really   good way to do it because lots of people nowadays g et their main information through social media, so it ’ s a channel where we can reach them and have a bigger impact.   Yes, I think that would be my key focus  if I had an awareness campaign on the topic of recycling.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Recycle

recycling ielts essay topic

Q1.Do you recycle? Why?

Yes, recycling appeals to me, and I utilize numerous things for it because I staunchly believe it is a prudent way to minimize waste material. This activity helps us to keep our environment in good shape with efficient management of natural resources, water and metals. So a substantial recycling incline could help protect our valuable resources significantly.

Q2. Did you recycle when you were a kid?

Yes, I have had this habit of recycling since my childhood. I hail from a joint family. My parents are very close to our nature, and they say that it is a blessing from the almighty, and we must leave no stone unturned to protect it. They believe that recycling things is the best way to safeguard our environment. To promote recycling, they used to conduct a competition every Sunday. Moreover, they used to teach my friends and me new ways to recycle old things. Due to these reasons, I developed the habit of recycling in my budding years.

Q3. Will you recycle in the future?

Mother nature has given us so much, and our bounden duty is to keep it in good shape. Therefore, recycling is a part of my routine, and I have adopted it into my lifestyle. Apart from this, I also motivate others to participate in this noble cause.

Q4. What kind of things do you recycle?

I think plastic is the biggest contributor to environmental pollution. Therefore I recycle all kinds of plastic waste coming out of my house. Apart from this, deforestation has increased due to the high usage of paper, and I try my best to recycle all paper items in my home.
