Presentation Tips: How to make mobile friendly presentations

  • Presentation design

Featured image for “Presentation Tips: How to make mobile friendly presentations”

Welcome back to our article series on practical and short tips to help you create better presentations.

So far, we’ve tackled the issue of compressing presentations , followed by some tips on how to make a presentation printer friendly. Now we’re going to dive into yet another topic that is often overlooked when creating a presentation and that is making sure your presentation is mobile friendly.

Why is this important?

We’re living in a world where smartphones have become ubiquitous (and for some people, their smartphone is even more than that, as it’s almost become an extension of their body). In 2020, for the first time ever, mobile internet traffic surpassed desktop traffic.

More and more businesses adopt a mobile first approach when it comes to their website, apps and overall user experience of their clients. So why don’t we apply the same logic to presentations too?

Whether we’re sending a presentation through email (either before or after a meeting), holding an online meeting or giving a webinar, high chances that someone from the audience will view it on their mobile device.

So here are some simple tips on how to create your own mobile-friendly presentation.

1. Larger Text Size

This is probably the most important guideline out of all and it makes sense why. If the text size is too small, your presentation is unreadable and people will stop paying attention.

So make sure your text sizes are large enough to be viewed on a mobile screen. But how large is “large enough” you may be wondering?

Well I’ve done this quick experiment with various font sizes on my own phone to test it out.

I put different sized-lines and took the picture from how I would see it. Feel free to judge yourself and see what is the smallest size that your eyes are comfortable with.

As a rule of thumb, I’d go with at least a 60 point size for headlines and a 30-32 point size for body content. You could probably get away with a bit smaller text, but I wouldn’t go smaller than 20 points.

make presentation of mobile

2. Less is more

Due to the small size of mobile devices, you definitely don’t want to overcrowd your slides. Keep them simple, uncluttered and follow the cardinal rule of “1 idea = 1 slide”. I’d take that one step further and say even “1 sub-idea = 1 slide”

What do I mean by that? Well, let’s say you have a slide called “5 Success Factors for X” and typically you’d add all 5 points on your slide, along with some accompanying graphics like icons or numbers or pictures (we hope that by this point, you stopped using bullet points in your presentations).

But in a mobile version, after enlarging your text to be the minimum readable size, you might want to split those 5 points into 2 slides, or even have one success factor per slide.

If you’re worried that your presentation will get too long in this case, then don’t. In the end, your audience will still see the same amount of content in the same amount of time, so why not at least space out that content for a better understanding?

3. Large images

When adding images to your presentation, make sure they are large enough so that the audience doesn’t have to squint to see them.

Ideally the image should occupy the whole slide and work as a background with minimal content on top of it. But if you need to add more than one image, make sure that each image takes up at least a quarter of the slide.

Because of this, I don’t recommend using more than 4 images on your slide, and if you need to use more (for example to showcase multiple products), just remember guideline #2 and split it up across multiple slides.

4. Show & tell, don’t write

As a result of guideline #2, you’d have to keep your slide content to a minimum. When thinking whether to keep a certain word or phrase, think of it from this perspective: is this something I can visually illustrate or represent with an image or icon?

Graphics don’t even have to be a literal representation of the content, but can be more subtle and indirect in order to cover more of the slide content while you explain the context

5. Make a higher contrast

Contrast is one of design’s key principles, and it plays an even bigger role on a smaller screen size.

Make sure your slide content, whether it’s text, graphics, images or charts, has enough contrast between its different parts. Contrast doesn’t refer just to color contrast, but also contrast in size or placement.

A good way to tell if your presentation has enough contrast is to slightly squint your eyes when viewing your presentation on your mobile. If some colors get blended together or if pieces of text look the same when they shouldn’t (eg. a main point and a sub-point), then you have to increase the contrast of those elements.

6. Clean & simple charts & diagrams

Charts and diagrams can easily become overwhelming on small screens if you’re not careful. A standard chart in Powerpoint would have both axes, it would have a legend, a slide title, maybe some data labels or some trend lines and so on. If you have all of these elements, then it can become over cluttered and people won’t be able to properly distinguish them.

Try and think of any unnecessary elements and remove them. Remember that less is more. For example, if you have a bar chart, you should keep either your vertical axis or your data labels, you shouldn’t keep both.

7. No fancy stuff

For the purpose of a simpler and seamless viewing experience, don’t overdo it with animations and transitions. In fact, if they don’t serve a real useful purpose, just take them out completely (I’d argue that 80-90% of animations are useless beyond just being flashy and we rarely use them).

Without animations and transitions you will also make sure that who is viewing the presentation will have a minimum risk of the presentation lagging. Another way to achieve this is to just save your presentation as a PDF and send it like that.

Creating a mobile friendly doesn’t require a huge amount of extra work, you just have to keep these tips in mind from the very beginning.

Following these guidelines will help your presentation stand out from a mobile viewer’s perspective, giving them a better overall experience. And that in turn will better reflect back on you, as you’ll be perceived as a professional that has a high attention to details, cares about the audience and does not let things to chance.

When lack of inspiration or time constraints are something you’re worried about, it’s a good idea to seek help. Slidesgo comes to the rescue with its latest functionality—the AI presentation maker! With a few clicks, you’ll have wonderful slideshows that suit your own needs . And it’s totally free!

make presentation of mobile

Generate presentations in minutes

We humans make the world move, but we need to sleep, rest and so on. What if there were someone available 24/7 for you? It’s time to get out of your comfort zone and ask the AI presentation maker to give you a hand. The possibilities are endless : you choose the topic, the tone and the style, and the AI will do the rest. Now we’re talking!

Customize your AI-generated presentation online

Alright, your robotic pal has generated a presentation for you. But, for the time being, AIs can’t read minds, so it’s likely that you’ll want to modify the slides. Please do! We didn’t forget about those time constraints you’re facing, so thanks to the editing tools provided by one of our sister projects —shoutouts to Wepik — you can make changes on the fly without resorting to other programs or software. Add text, choose your own colors, rearrange elements, it’s up to you! Oh, and since we are a big family, you’ll be able to access many resources from big names, that is, Freepik and Flaticon . That means having a lot of images and icons at your disposal!

make presentation of mobile

How does it work?

Think of your topic.

First things first, you’ll be talking about something in particular, right? A business meeting, a new medical breakthrough, the weather, your favorite songs, a basketball game, a pink elephant you saw last Sunday—you name it. Just type it out and let the AI know what the topic is.

Choose your preferred style and tone

They say that variety is the spice of life. That’s why we let you choose between different design styles, including doodle, simple, abstract, geometric, and elegant . What about the tone? Several of them: fun, creative, casual, professional, and formal. Each one will give you something unique, so which way of impressing your audience will it be this time? Mix and match!

Make any desired changes

You’ve got freshly generated slides. Oh, you wish they were in a different color? That text box would look better if it were placed on the right side? Run the online editor and use the tools to have the slides exactly your way.

Download the final result for free

Yes, just as envisioned those slides deserve to be on your storage device at once! You can export the presentation in .pdf format and download it for free . Can’t wait to show it to your best friend because you think they will love it? Generate a shareable link!

What is an AI-generated presentation?

It’s exactly “what it says on the cover”. AIs, or artificial intelligences, are in constant evolution, and they are now able to generate presentations in a short time, based on inputs from the user. This technology allows you to get a satisfactory presentation much faster by doing a big chunk of the work.

Can I customize the presentation generated by the AI?

Of course! That’s the point! Slidesgo is all for customization since day one, so you’ll be able to make any changes to presentations generated by the AI. We humans are irreplaceable, after all! Thanks to the online editor, you can do whatever modifications you may need, without having to install any software. Colors, text, images, icons, placement, the final decision concerning all of the elements is up to you.

Can I add my own images?

Absolutely. That’s a basic function, and we made sure to have it available. Would it make sense to have a portfolio template generated by an AI without a single picture of your own work? In any case, we also offer the possibility of asking the AI to generate images for you via prompts. Additionally, you can also check out the integrated gallery of images from Freepik and use them. If making an impression is your goal, you’ll have an easy time!

Is this new functionality free? As in “free of charge”? Do you mean it?

Yes, it is, and we mean it. We even asked our buddies at Wepik, who are the ones hosting this AI presentation maker, and they told us “yup, it’s on the house”.

Are there more presentation designs available?

From time to time, we’ll be adding more designs. The cool thing is that you’ll have at your disposal a lot of content from Freepik and Flaticon when using the AI presentation maker. Oh, and just as a reminder, if you feel like you want to do things yourself and don’t want to rely on an AI, you’re on Slidesgo, the leading website when it comes to presentation templates. We have thousands of them, and counting!.

How can I download my presentation?

The easiest way is to click on “Download” to get your presentation in .pdf format. But there are other options! You can click on “Present” to enter the presenter view and start presenting right away! There’s also the “Share” option, which gives you a shareable link. This way, any friend, relative, colleague—anyone, really—will be able to access your presentation in a moment.

Discover more content

This is just the beginning! Slidesgo has thousands of customizable templates for Google Slides and PowerPoint. Our designers have created them with much care and love, and the variety of topics, themes and styles is, how to put it, immense! We also have a blog, in which we post articles for those who want to find inspiration or need to learn a bit more about Google Slides or PowerPoint. Do you have kids? We’ve got a section dedicated to printable coloring pages! Have a look around and make the most of our site!

Presentation-assessment

N OWADAYS, our young people would spiral into silence, into disappointment if they find their classes requiring rote memory on what they learn. Such a dull class environment results in their attending to their mobile even during class sessions. Inquiry-based approach as a teaching strategy could make a science class have students feel like young scientists. After refreshing our minds on what IBL is, let's go through the unfinished IBL lesson plan we presented last week.

Inquiry-based learning. Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is "a form of active learning that starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios." While traditional education "generally relies on the teacher presenting facts and his/her knowledge about the subject, the teacher is more of a facilitator than a lecturer. As a facilitator, the teacher identifies issues, challenges and problems on a given topic — aimed toward solutions to problems raised in the lesson taught. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquiry-based_learning) As our source informs, "inquiry-based learning includes problem-based learning, generally used in small-scale investigations and projects," — much "closely related to the development and practice of thinking and problem-solving skills." Our source further informs that at the beginning of the 20th century, the well-known education philosopher John Dewey "was the first to criticize that science education was not taught in a way to develop young scientific thinkers." He then proposed "that science should be taught as a process and way of thinking — not subject content to be memorized" — and "without critical thinking." Based on Dewey's ideas, Joseph Schwab proposed that science should not aim to be "identifying stable truths about the world that we live in." Rather, "science could be a flexible and multi-directional inquiry-driven process of thinking and learning." This characteristic is very obvious in the IBL lesson plan presented last week, which we will conclude today.

The IBL lesson plan. The class assignment was to draft a lesson plan for an IBL activity and present it in our March session using slides. Discussion follows after every presentation. The class was directed to find their reference in Classwork "ACTIVITIES," which is Handout 7 Module 3 on IBL activities. In sharing last week with our readers an assignment, we presented the following parts of the IBL lesson plan for a Grade 9 in Science as its Learning Area:

The Objective of Content Standards was "the structure and function of plant parts and organelles involved in Photosynthesis." Its Performance Standards were for "the students to design and investigate to provide evidence that plants can make their food."

The Specific Objectives expect the students to be able to (1) comprehend fundamental processes involved in plant growth, including photosynthesis and key elements roles such as carbon dioxide, sunlight, water, oxygen and glucose; (2) identify and explain external factors significance — soil nutrient levels, shade, and vegetation presence influencing plant growth and development; and (3) apply acquired knowledge and critical thinking skills to design and conduct controlled experiments to determine the optimal growing conditions for plants, utilizing various containers, soil types, and lighting conditions provided.

From here, the lesson plan indicates the Content, Learning Resources, and Procedures, which begin with (a) a 10-minute Introduction, (b) a 5-minute Grouping of students, (c) a 15-minute Planning of the experiment, (d) a 10-minute Setting up the experiment, (e) two/three-weeks Monitoring and data collection, and a (f) 20-minute Analysis and Conclusion.

Presentation to Conclusion. The IBL lesson plan submitted by Leslie Amore Dadole — one of my students and shared with our readers last week — ended with the experiment's Analysis and Conclusion. We continue with the experiment's Presentation:

The teacher will:

– Allow each group to present their experiment, findings and conclusions to the class.

– Encourage students to share their experiences, challenges faced, and lessons learned during the experiment.

Students answer these questions:

– What key points will you include in your group's presentation of the experiment, findings and conclusions?

– How will you ensure your presentation effectively communicates your group's experience and results?

Next comes the Extension where the teacher will:

– Challenge students to design follow-up experiments that further investigate specific factors identified as influential in plant growth.

– Encourage students to explore scientific literature to deepen their understanding of plant physiology and related concepts.

– Discuss the potential applications of their findings in agriculture, environmental science and sustainability efforts.

Based on such scaffolding, students answer these questions:

– What additional experiments could be designed to explore further specific factors identified as influential in plant growth?

– How might scientific literature help deepen our understanding of plant physiology and related concepts?

This goes through Assessment, which evaluates students based on their group discussion participation, the experiment design thoroughness, the data collection accuracy, and the clarity of their conclusions during the group presentations.

The Rubric Criteria for Science Experiment Assessment consists of the following:

– Excellent (4) — Consistently contributes insightful ideas, actively engages with peers, encourages discussion and demonstrates excellent communication skills.

– Good (3) — Generally participates in discussions, offers relevant input, listens to others and communicates effectively with the group.

– Fair (2) — Participates occasionally, provides limited input, listens passively and struggles to communicate effectively with the group.

– Needs Improvement (1) — Rarely participates, offers minimal input, does not engage with peers and lacks effective communication skills.

– Excellent (4) — Designs a comprehensive experiment with clear objectives, detailed procedures, and appropriate controls and data collection methods. Ensures accuracy through meticulous planning and execution.

– Good (3) — Designs a solid experiment with clear objectives and procedures, includes some controls, and collects data accurately with minor oversights.

– Fair (2) — Designs a basic experiment with vague objectives and procedures, lacks some controls, and collects data with inconsistencies affecting accuracy.

– Needs Improvement (1) — Designs a superficial experiment with unclear objectives and procedures, lacks controls, and collects data haphazardly, leading to significant inaccuracies.

Finally is the Assessment of the Clarity of Group Conclusions. The students' Presentation is similarly rated:

– Excellent (1) — Presents well-organized conclusions supported by data, effectively communicates key findings to the audience, uses visuals to enhance understanding and addresses questions confidently.

– Good (2) — Presents mostly clear conclusions supported by data, adequately communicates key points to the audience, somewhat effectively uses visuals and responds to questions with some confidence.

– Fair (3) — Presents conclusions somewhat unclearly or lacks strong support from data, struggles to effectively communicate key findings to the audience, minimally or ineffectively uses visuals, and responds to questions.

– Needs Improvement (1) — Presents unclear conclusions/unsupported by data, fails to communicate key findings effectively to the audience, lacks visual aids/uses them inappropriately, and struggles to coherently respond to questions.

OpenAI’s GPT-4o Model Gives ChatGPT a Snappy, Flirty Upgrade

Photo of presenters at the OpenAI's event

Since it launched in late 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has generally fended off suggestions that it has emotions or desires by responding that it’s just an artificial intelligence model. Upgrades announced by OpenAI Monday showed the company apparently trying to make the chatbot act more like a human.

In demos, the new version of ChatGPT was capable of rapid-fire, natural voice conversations, picked up on emotional cues, and displayed simulated emotional reactions of its own.

During a livestream from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco on Monday, Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, announced that ChatGPT will be powered by a new, more powerful AI model called GPT-4o. The model will be available to both free and paid users of ChatGPT via a new desktop app as well as the existing mobile app and web version.

Murati said the GPT-4o model allows ChatGPT to respond more rapidly to voice, image, and video input than OpenAI’s previous technology. In demos, she and other OpenAI employees had fast-flowing conversations with ChatGPT, which answered using a liveley and expressive female-sounding voice and nimbly kept up when interrupted.

ChatGPT adopted different emotional tones during the conversation and at times responded as if it were experiencing feelings of its own. When an OpenAI employee said he had been talking about how “useful and amazing” the chatbot is, it responded flirtatiously, gushing “Oh stop it, you’re making me blush.”

“This just feels so magical, and that’s wonderful,” Murati said, adding, “over the next few weeks we’ll be rolling out these capabilities to everyone.”

At another point in the demo, ChatGPT responded to OpenAI researcher Barret Zoph’s greeting by asking, “How can I brighten your day today?” When Zoph asked the chatbot to look at a selfie of him and say what emotions he was showing, ChatGPT responded, “I’ll put my emotional detective hat on” and warmly said, “It looks like you’re feeling pretty happy and cheerful … whatever’s going on, it looks like you’re in a great mood.”

In a blog post Monday, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the significance of the new interface. “It feels like AI from the movies; and it’s still a bit surprising to me that it’s real,” Altman wrote. “Getting to human-level response times and expressiveness turns out to be a big change.”

OpenAI’s tweaks may make ChatGPT more engaging and popular, but they may also change the way users think about the program.

ChatGPT became a sensation last year thanks to its remarkable ability to answer questions and generate text with what often resembles humanlike understanding. But OpenAI and leading competitors such as Google have so far generally sought to limit the anthropomorphism of their chatbots, by refusing to answer certain types of questions and having models remind users that they are mere computer programs.

Despite that caution, the sometimes lifelike repartee of the latest chatbots can tap into users’ emotions. Some companies have adapted the technology to maximize this phenomenon, offering AI companions that role-play different human emotions or are offered as AI girlfriends and boyfriends . Some AI researchers have warned that the long-term implications of deploying programs that mimic and respond to emotions could be unwelcome.

A team at Google DeepMind last month released a research paper exploring the ethical risks that may arise as AI assistants become more capable. Among other things, the researchers warn that such assistants could become highly persuasive and addictive. Last year, a British man pleaded guilty to breaching security at Windsor Castle , saying that a chatbot he had exchanged more than 5,000 messages with had encouraged him to do so.

In addition to snappier conversational skills, OpenAI says its GPT-4o model makes ChatGPT better able to make sense of images, including photos and charts, and can store more information about a user in its “memory” to provide a more personalized experience.

OpenAI says it will make GPT-4o available to users of the free version of ChatGPT, essentially upgrading all users to its most capable AI model.

Google is expected to unveil new AI technologies of its own at the search company’s I/O developer conference starting Tuesday. Competition between companies working on AI seems unlikely to cool down. At the end of today’s OpenAI event, Murati promised that the company would soon be offering more announcements, “on our progress towards the next big thing.”

Apologies if this is a long story. After my mother in Michigan gifted my daughter her 2001 VW Beetle with 48,000 miles on it, my daughter and I traveled from California to pick up the car. We headed out on Thursday morning for the 5 day drive back home to Oakland California, taking a northern route to stop by Badlands National Park and Mt Rushmore. By Saturday evening, we arrived in Cheyenne WY, where we spent the night. After looking at the weather forecast for the Sierra mountains, we decided to pick up some chains for our tires at the local Walmart in Laramie, WY, before continuing on our trip. On Sunday morning, as we got close to Laramie on I-80, the engine started sputtering, misfiring and losing power. The EPC light kept flashing and it was clear something was wrong. I was able to make it to the local Walmart parking lot, though the car stalled a few times on the way there. After I parked, I was unable to generate any power beyond idling, and the car continued to stall. I consulted yelp and google to find a local mechanic, but none of the local shops were open on Sunday. I saw a listing for Rise High Auto Repair, which described itself as a mobile mechanic company. I called the number and spoke with the proprietor, Chris on the phone. He said he could be there in 35 minutes and would diagnose the problem for $125 ($95 diagnostic fee and $35 travel fee) in the Walmart parking lot and that the $95 diagnostic fee would count against the repair cost if we opted to have him repair the car. When Chris arrived in his mobile truck, he was incredibly friendly and he got straight to work. He recommended replacing the spark plugs and wires, thinking that would address the issue. After finishing the repair and clearing the codes, he suggested I drive around in the parking lot a few times to reset the computer to see if the repair addressed the issue. However it did not. I made it about 200 feet and the initial problem persisted. He said he thought it could be an issue with the throttle, which he said he could clean, but if it needed replacement, I'd need to spend a couple of days in Laramie, because it was unlikely any of the local part shops would have the necessary part in inventory. He took apart the throttle, cleaned it out, and reset the computer. We decided to take our chances and see if we could make it to Salt Lake City and then Elko NV, which was about 625 miles away. The car ran well all the way to Elko. We got to Elko around 10:30 pm, and I noticed I had a text from Chis checking in on us to see how the trip was going. On Monday morning, we continued our trip back to Oakland and arrived safely with no further issues. Again, I had a text from Chris on Monday, to see if we made it home ok. All told we drove over 1100 miles. I can't say enough about Chris. First, he was incredibly competent. I could tell from speaking with him that he is extremely knowledgeable about automobile repairs. Watching him work, I felt like I was watching a surgeon. He made all of the repairs in the Walmart parking lot and he worked efficiently and thoroughly to ensure that he was able to repair the car. It was cold and windy on this particular Sunday and he invested over 4 hours of his time fixing our car outside. Finally, he was incredibly honest and kind. He cared enough to check in on us until we got home, something he really didn't need to do. I unequivocally recommend using Chris and his company if you find yourself in Laramie WY.
