Ph.D. in Human Resource Management

Program information.

The doctoral program in human resource management (HRM) prepares students for success in research universities as faculty members specializing in human resources. Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research and teaching expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM, including the relationship between these practices and organizational strategies, cultures, and performance.

Many HRM scholars specialize or focus on more micro-level work, such as researching the impact of specific HR practices (e.g., selection or training techniques) on individual-level measures of satisfaction or performance. Alternatively, macro-level HR (i.e., “strategic HRM”) scholars study the effects of systems of HR policies and practices on organizational-level outcomes. KU faculty have expertise at both levels, as evidenced by publications in prestigious outlets.

Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM with a focus on the attraction, selection, retention, development, motivation, and utilization of individuals in organizations.

Part of our mission is to develop effective teachers. To that end, all doctoral students are required to teach at least two sections as independent instructors. The school and university prepare and reward doctoral students for excellence in teaching through various programs and awards.

OSU strives to offer its doctorate in human resource students full tuition support. In addition, most doctoral students can receive a Graduate Assistant (GA) Fellowship. The fellowship covers insurance, tuition, and a monthly stipend. Generally, students with acceptable academic performance can continue receiving support each year. Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

  • A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
  •  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

This Human Resource Development (HRD) track program prepares you to conduct research and provide sophisticated consultation into how workers acquire new knowledge and skills, relate to one another in complex social environments, and transition to management and leadership positions. You will learn how to see HRD theories and practices in larger economic, social, and political contexts, and you will be able to chart organizational paths for growth in those contexts.  

Your contributions to research will help organizations and systems all over the world better understand ways in which to create fair and equitable environments for their workforces, design programs that support workers and prevent burnout, and promote professional growth and satisfaction in employees.

Doctoral students in Human Resource Development gain the capacity to:

  • Teach leadership, adult education, and human resource development courses.

All Ph.D. students are required to register for 24 semester thesis credits after completing the preliminary oral exam. The 24 credits must be taken over two or more terms.

Additional Research Courses (9 credits)

In addition to the research/methodology courses mentioned in the department core the following are required for students in the HRD track.

  • 3 cr statistics course selected in consultation with advisor
  • OLPD 8603— The Capstone Research Experience (6 cr.). This course is offered every other year. When it is offered take six credits over two semesters, three credits to be taken in fall semester and three credits to be taken in spring semester. Is usually taken during the second year or third year if the student is full-time.

Additional coursework (14 credits minimum)

Minimum of 14 credits required. These credits can be used to meet the requirement that a minimum of 12 credits be taken outside the HRD track or for a minor. Courses not specifically listed should have advisor approval.

December 1 for a Fall semester start. Fall semester start only.

Applicants may only apply to one OLPD track.

Applications are not complete until ALL required materials and fees have been received. If anything is missing, your application may not be considered until the next review date the following year. It is strongly recommended to apply at least two weeks before any submission deadlines.

Applications are processed by the Graduate School. A decision for admission notice will be emailed to you once your application is carefully reviewed by the department's admission committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by Graduate School officials.

Readmission

If a graduate student in an OLPD program has become inactive they must follow the readmission procedures .

Whether you seek reactivation after accidentally being discontinued this term or want to return after a long absence these are the steps needed to re-apply.

  • Complete the proper online readmission application . If you have been away from the program less than five years use the Express Readmission Application and email it to [email protected] . All others must submit the Online Application for Readmission  
  • Once received, the department will forward your application to the appropriate admissions committee. Readmission decisions are normally determined by the program’s admissions committee, not any one individual faculty member. Readmission is never guaranteed. Decisions for readmission are based on a review of previous progress toward degree completion, the proposed timeline for completion, the availability of faculty resources, and/or any additional application materials they may request from you. Individual programs/tracks reserve the right to readmit students under the current graduate program requirements, rules, and guidelines. They may also request an applicant to provide additional information prior to making a decision.  
  • Once the committee makes their recommendation, the department’s DGS will sign off on the decision and forward the result to the central Graduate Admissions Office for processing. Once processed, you will be notified of the decision.

Individual department programs and tracks reserve the right to require readmitted students to retake coursework if they deem it appropriate. Readmitted students are also required to abide by current time-to-degree policies as determined by the University, which may differ from the policy in place when they first started the degree program.

Individuals seeking readmission to the Ph.D., Ed.D., and M.A. program tracks in the former EDPA, WHRE, and WCFE majors can only reapply to the appropriate program track under the Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD) major name.

What can you do with a Human Resource Management graduate degree?

If you’re looking for interpersonal work as a recent college graduate, a career in human resources is the way to go.

Human resources (HR) is a great career option for those good at communicating, decision-making and coaching. Even if you did not earn a bachelor’s degree in HR, there are other opportunities for you to study HR and learn all there is to know about the field.

Sacred Heart University offers a master of science in human resource management (MS-HRM)  for individuals looking to develop the skills and real-world knowledge it takes to make high-impact contributions in the field. Bora Kwon , assistant professor of management and program director of the MS-HRM program, and Seung Whan Ryu , assistant professor of management, have shared how students can benefit from earning an MS-HRM degree.

What is human resource management?

When you think about HR, you may think about developing and implementing policies, practices and systems targeted towards managing people. However, there is a lot more to it. HR plays many roles within an organization. From hiring, firing, employee benefits and training, HR professionals play an important role in the success of a business by managing its most important resource: employees.

What are the paths human resources graduates can take?

New graduates typically become an HR coordinator or generalist. Being in a generalist or practitioner role allows HR professionals to learn the various career paths of the field and obtain the skills needed to enter more specific roles.

Specific HR roles include:

  • Compensation and benefits specialist: designs and manages employee compensation packages, including salary, bonuses and benefits programs
  • Recruiting and selection specialist: sources and attracts qualified candidates for the job openings
  • HR analyst: gathers, analyzes and interprets HR data to support data-driven human resource management decision-making
  • Employee relations specialist: investigates and resolves employee grievances and mediates disputes between employees and managers
  • Training and leadership development specialist: designs and delivers training programs for employees at all levels
  • HR manager: oversees a team of HR professionals and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the HR department
  • HR business partner: partners with business units to provide strategic HR support, helping them to achieve business goals

SHU’s MS-HRM program offers courses to prepare students for these different career paths in the HR field. Some of the courses include HR analytics, performance management, finance for HR managers, organizational behavior, talent management and HR law.

Is a career in human resources in demand?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , employment in human resources is projected to grow 6% from 2022-2032, faster than the average for all occupations. “A career in HR will always be in demand even while the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is rising,” said Ryu. “It is a department that touches in human elements and cannot be replaced by AI."

How does a master’s degree in human resource management differ from a bachelor’s degree?

From a practical standpoint, a master’s degree in human resource management increases your salary and makes you stand out from other candidates in the interviewing process. You also have more knowledge and a varied skillset to bring into the role.

“At SHU, we only offer an introductory course in human resource management for our undergraduate students. But in our master’s program, we cover each path and function of HR in designated courses,” said Ryu. “So, with a master’s in HR, you get a true taste for each function.”

What sets Sacred Heart’s human resource management program apart from programs at other colleges?

SHU offers a bachelor’s-master of science in human resource management (MSHRM) 4+1 dual degree program that guarantees you a place in the master of science in human resource management program as long as you meet program criteria during your undergraduate years. The professors in the program are experts in HR and are adaptable when it comes to the changes in the field. All the program courses have less than 15 students, so you can establish a close relationship with your professors. Courses are offered fully online and live-casted during the evenings, so you get an interactive and engaging educational experience.

Successful MS-HRM students come from all educational backgrounds but must have a bachelor's degree. Our program is designed to meet the needs of professionals looking to expand their skills within HRM.

A complete application consists of the following items to be received by the noted deadlines:

Unofficial Transcripts

Applicants must submit unofficial transcripts from any degree-awarding college or university, as well as any post-secondary institution attended.

Applicants must submit a detailed current resume, indicating professional work experience—including start and end dates (month and year) for each position held. Provide accomplishments and skills acquired, including managerial experience.

Letter of Recommendation

Applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation. The letter should provide specific examples and anecdotes that illustrate your professional and/or academic potential.

Applicants must write an essay outlining their personal experiences, career goals, past challenges, any other relevant information they'd like the admissions committee to consider.

Admission Requirements

  • At least three years full-time managerial experience in a supervisory role strongly preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
  • 3.0 cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA)
  • A high degree of potential for advancement to an organizational leadership role
  • Important personal and managerial attributes, such as intellectual curiosity, strong communication skills, maturity, openness to new ideas and change, leadership qualities, analytical thinking ability, perseverance, and an ability to lead and work in teams
  • Background knowledge of and exposure to word processing, spreadsheets and presentations

Transfer Credit Policy

  • At the sole discretion of Michigan State University, up to 9 graduate credit hours (excluding research and thesis credits) may be transferred from other postsecondary accredited institutions of comparable academic quality. Only courses in which at least a 3.0 grade or its equivalent was received will be considered for transfer. Transfer credit can only be used towards a master’s degree of 30 credits minimum; not towards a Graduate Certificate.

Applicants must submit the following items:

  • A completed application
  • A one-time, nonrefundable $100 application fee
  • Official undergraduate transcripts from a bachelor’s degree program at an  accredited college  or university and official transcripts of other programs or courses of study from any accredited college or university attended prior to Michigan State University. Transcripts from Michigan State are not required.
  • If an applicant selects they are a Service member or a Veteran of the military an official military transcript will be required
  • Current resume detailing professional work experience, academic credentials and related accomplishments, and pertinent biographical information
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional, work-related references, preferably supervisors. Letters that attest to your ability to work within and lead teams, as well as to your contribution to a professional business environment, are strongly recommended.
  • A statement of intention essay, no more than two pages, including details of your direct supervisory and/or project/program management experience, as well as a statement on how you intend to leverage the  degree  in your career
  • GMAT scores may be submitted if your bachelor’s degree GPA was below 3.0 in your last two years of undergraduate work*

*Qualified applicants with 3 or more years’ full-time managerial experience in a supervisory role and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher are typically not required to submit GMAT scores for admissions consideration. Admissions decisions are determined by several factors, including: quantity and quality of professional and/or military experience; academic degrees (including graduate degrees) and grade point averages; institution(s) where credits were earned; Letters of Recommendation; and the Statement of intention. Applicants may be requested to submit GMAT scores based on these criteria. Applicants who have earned below a cumulative 3.0 GPA, especially from non-regionally accredited institutions, are encouraged to provide a strong GMAT score along with their application. You will need a UK first-class or 2:1 honours degree in one of the subjects below, or an equivalent overseas qualification.

An undergraduate degree in any subject is normally required.

  • TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 100 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
  • C1 Advanced ( CAE ) / C2 Proficiency ( CPE ): total 185 with at least 169 in each component.
  • Trinity ISE : ISE III with passes in all four components.
  • PTE Academic: total 70 with at least 59 in each component.

Your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS , TOEFL, Trinity ISE or PTE , in which case it must be no more than two years old.

We also accept an undergraduate or postgraduate degree that has been taught and assessed in English in a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas and Immigration:
