However if you are from any other university or college, just select this option, and you should find the form very easy to complete. NB The approximate pricing is based on binding your thesis (either hard covered or soft covered, as specified by you), together with any printing costs. With hard covered thesis, the form assumes a 'standard' amount of lettering on both the front cover and the spine. Binding, laminating and finishing

We have two binding options for putting together your finished document – plastic spiral or wire spiral binding. Other finishing options we offer are laminating up to A1 size, booklet folding and stapling, hole punching, stapling, guillotining/trimming and a myriad of folding option.

Architectural plans & specifications

We can pop out hundreds of A1 and A2 plans a day through our black and white or colour plan printer as well as print and bind your A4 and A3 specifications. 

Colour and black & white printing

One page or a multitude of pages, we can print or photocopy your documents and plans for you with ease. We use high quality laser printers for our colour printing which we can do direct from file or copy up to A3 in size. Our black and white is copied or printed through our high-speed photocopiers. If you have anything larger than A3 then we can scan and print or print directly from file to A2, A1 and A0 in size or 841mm x any length. We also have a range of papers from 80gsm all the way up to 350gsm card (your typical business card weight) plus everything in between to suit your document (dependant on size).

Do you have something that you need scanned so you can email it? Or do you want to get those old documents or plans to file so you can throw them away or you simply want a back up copy? Digital is often the way to go these days and we can do all that for you and save to PDF or jpg in colour or black and white.

Uniprint services for University of Otago students

Printing on the university of otago campus.

The University of Otago uses Canon multifunction devices (MFDs) known as Uniprintstations, with the Uniflow system as its charging software. The Uniprintstation printers can be used for printing colour and black & white, photocopying and scanning either to a USB pen drive or to email.

Printing from the student desktop on campus

The default printer set up on the University student desktop (the computers available for student use on campus) is 'Black and White Printer'. To print in colour, please choose 'Colour Printer' in your printing options.

Printing from your laptop

You can print from your laptop or home computer to the Uniprintstation printers on campus by using @Print - @Print is a way of emailing your document to the Uniflow system. You must email your printing job from your @student.otago email address:

• For black and white printing, email the document to [email protected]
• For colour printing, email the document to [email protected]

You can go to any of the Uniprintstations and use the UNIflow system to print your printing job. Jobs not printed out will be automatically deleted from UNIflow after ten hours.

Checking your print balance

Your student printing account balance shows at the top of the touchscreen on the Uniprintstation printer after you have swiped your student ID card.

Adding Funds

You can add funds to your student card by using either of these ways:

• Credit Card Gateway payment (transaction fees apply) via electronic devices and iPhones.
• Over the counter at the Uniprintshop

If all or part of your job fails to print, please fill out the Student Printing Refund Request Form

Printing fund expiry

Funds on your student printing account will expire on 30 November the year following your final enrolment at the University of Otago. For example the final enrolment was in 2013, the funds on your account will expire on 30 November 2014.

If you are a student at the University of Otago, you can get many of your course books and materials from Uniprint's Central Library branch in the ISB. Your lecturer will let you know what arrangements have been made for your course.

Thesis printing and binding

Uniprint can bind your thesis using either:

• soft binding
• hard binding

The preferred file format for supplying your thesis is as an Acrobat .pdf. All thesis documents are printed on 100gsm paper unless requested otherwise.

Author declaration forms

A completed and signed copy of one of these forms will need to accompany your thesis for binding:

• Softbound thesis declaration form
• Author declaration form for hard-bound copies (Masters and Doctorate) (PDF)

Please note for Doctoral softbound submissions, the form does not need to be bound into the thesis.  Just one loose copy is required.  Students should also submit four softbound copies.

Uniprint recommends that you allow up to 10 working days to complete the printing and binding process of your thesis.

Thesis soft binding

Please check the guidelines that your supervisor or department had given you about which soft binding to use. Generally fastback binding (using thermal tape along the spine of the publication) is used for theses but plastic spiral binding and wire binding are also available.

Thesis hard binding

It will take approximately two weeks for your thesis to be hard bound. To order the hard binding of your thesis you will need to fill out a thesis binding request form at Uniprint. Once your thesis is ready you can either:

• Collect it from Uniprint, or
• Ask Uniprint to courier it to you for an additional fee, or
• Ask Uniprint to send it to a national or international address for an additional fee

Is someone else organising your thesis binding?

If you are unable to be in Dunedin for the soft or hard binding process and someone is organising your thesis for you on your behalf, you will need to make sure that they know:

• The correct order of your thesis
• What binding style, colours and printing you have chosen for your thesis
• How payment will be made for your bound thesis

Getting this done correctly involves several considerations that includes the Submission of your document for printing and binding, your choice of Paper, and the Style of binding you want.

SUBMITTING YOUR THESIS OR DISSERTATION FOR BINDING:

The first consideration for Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is whether you want your thesis or dissertation printed and bound for official submission or for your personal use, such as gifts to professors, departments, libraries, parents, sponsors, or you just want copies to preserve for future generations.

If you are officially submitting your Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding books to your

institution, you must follow their official guidelines for paper, margins, and type of binding. Every institution has

guidelines and your can ask your department or your graduate studies department for the guidelines. The quote/

ordering process for each of our 3 main types of binding is designed to accommodate all the options that most

schools require.

PAPER CHOICE

20lb regular or standard Copy Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have  a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper.

60lb regular or standard Copy Paper (also known as 24lb Copy Paper)*. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper. (See below for why this paper has 2 different names)

20lb, 25% Cotton Paper. This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference is that Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp.

24lb, 100% Cotton Paper . This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference isthat Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp. PLEASE NOTE that A4 (European Letter size) is NOT available in 100% cotton.

80lb Gloss-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a gloss finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

80lb Matte-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a matte (non-gloss coating) finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

BINDING STYLE

The binding style you choose depends first on whether you’re submitting officially to your institution or for personal use. We offer 3 types of binding Fabric Hardcover Binding with Gold Lettering and Gold Emblem ( https://phdbookbinding.com/fabric-hard-cover/ )

Most institutions require Fabric Hardcover Binding with gold lettering or gold emblem for official submission. You can also choose this type of binding for your own personal copies and as gifts because it is binding of the highest quality that is impressive in look and feel. Fabric Hardcover binding is high quality, archival binding that’s fit for the most demanding public or private library. Fabric options include:

• Classic Buckram fabric that is available in different colors,

A doctoral degree represents at least 3 years of full-time study at an advanced level. You must have been registered (i.e., not on suspension) for a minimum of 36 months full-time (or equivalent) before your thesis can be submitted for examination.

If you are not ready to submit your thesis within 4 years full-time (or equivalent) you must apply for an extension of time .

We recommend that you inform your Victoria supervisor and your school of your intention to submit three months ahead of time. This advanced notice allows time for your examiners to be nominated and approved prior to your submission. You will need to provide your supervisor with an abstract of your thesis to send to potential examiners.

Before submission check that you:

• Are currently registered and will have been registered for the three months immediately prior to submission. Email the Student Adviser team at [email protected] to discuss your registration
• Inform your Victoria supervisor of your intention to submit ahead of time and discuss how long they will need to review your final draft . In some cases, your supervisory team may require you to make modifications to your thesis before approval for submission can be given. The Victoria supervisor must sign a statement that all supervisors agree that your thesis is suitable for submission. If there is some dispute about the modifications you are asked to make, or about your readiness to submit, your School Research Committee will endeavour to resolve this.
• Consider the University’s guidelines on presentation of your thesis
• Read the University’s guidelines for  including publications in a doctoral thesis and apply using the Declaration for including a publication in a thesis form. This form can be completed prior to your submission. It will go to your Primary Supervisor for approval. You can submit your thesis even if you are waiting on your supervisor to sign off on this form.
• Check your thesis length . If relevant, you may apply to the Dean FGR for  permission to withhold access to your thesis or  extend your word count .
• Make sure that you know your staff login username and password. You will need to be logged in as staff to access the online submission form. If you do not know your staff username, please contact the Student Adviser team at [email protected]

Please submit a PDF of your thesis via the Doctoral Thesis Submission for Examination Microsoft Form. Once you have completed this form, it will notify the Examination Team of your submission, and will go to your Primary Supervisor for approval. The Examinations Team will process your submission once your supervisor has signed off on it. As long as you submit the form by your submission deadline, your submission will be counted as having been submitted on time, even if your supervisor does not approve the submission immediately.

The Examinations Team will contact you as soon as possible. If you have not heard from us five business days after your submission, you can email [email protected] to follow up.
