Well, fortunately, the market caught on, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the progress made in these areas. My local supermarket freezer is now filled with vegan ice creams and there’s an explosion of ethical fashion labels paving the way.

I used to wonder how amazing it would be if there was a vegan-friendly rival to McDonald’s. Now, even Hungary Jack’s (Burger King) and Dominos offer vegan options. Who would have thought!?

My wife Masa and I have travelled the world and have seen vegan malls , nightclubs, vegan Japanese restaurants and world-class vegan pizzerias . We’re even proud owners of puffy winter jackets with remarkably no bird feathers .

I’ve had countless business ideas since becoming vegan, but with the demanding commitment of The Minimalist Vegan, I can only dream of these concepts, without the capacity to execute on them.

So in this post, I’m sharing 45 vegan business opportunities that could help any marketplace. I’ve updated this article to include more relevant ideas to match the current times. 

My hope is that you can bring these ideas to life and shift the demand for ethical products and services.

These ideas are by no means revolutionary, but they do seem to be missing in many marketplaces. 

We’ve also tried to include ideas that are not too large-scale and intimidating to start. It’s always best to start small and validate your vegan business before investing more capital. 

Keep in mind we live in Tasmania, Australia, so maybe where you live there is much more (or less) to choose from.

In any case, I encourage you to reflect on all of the occasions when you’ve struggled to find a specific offering that is vegan-friendly and think about how you can help solve that problem yourself.

Nine times out of ten, food is the first thought that comes to mind when thinking of starting a vegan business venture. Just look at the comments in this post. The majority of entrepreneurs are thinking about getting into food.

It makes sense. Access to good food is the greatest challenge when transitioning to a vegan lifestyle . 

And even though vegan food businesses are experiencing crazy growth in markets like the UK, we still have a long ways to go to make plant-based food more accessible to people around the world. 

There are two types of vegan food businesses. There’s hospitality and there’s a food product. It’s the difference between opening a vegan restaurant or catering service and developing the next great vegan cheese product to be on the shelves of supermarkets.

Hospitality is a tough gig that requires incredible skill, long hours and low margins. However, if it works, cafe’s, restaurants and food trucks create a community station of vegans and non-vegans to eat together and share experiences. 

A vegan food product on the other hand is more scalable with better margins. But then it can be incredibly difficult to get your product onto shelves to be able to sell enough volume for it to be sustainable.

Let’s get into some examples of vegan food and beverage businesses.

  • The vegan version of Krispy Kremes.
  • Start a vegan sushi restaurant.

We’ve seen many vegan food businesses come and go over the years, and it’s always sad to see a beloved ethical entrepreneur shut shop. To mitigate this risk, we suggest starting with a super small operation at a weekly market.

This allows you to test your concept and see how customers respond. Be honest with yourself and avoid delusion. If no one is buying your food, it hasn’t hit the mark. Get feedback on your food and improve your product. 

From there you can slowly scale up to catering, a food truck then eventually a commercial space. But do it in stages, and take the time to build a loyal following. I wish you the best of luck!

An overlooked vegan business opportunity is within services. I can’t tell you how many times I needed help and struggled to find a professional who was also vegan. 

Working with a service provider with shared values gives vegan customers reassurance and confidence to work together without being judged.

If you have skills in a particular area, a services business is one of the most affordable and quickest businesses to start. Let’s look at some ideas below.

  • A freelance illustrator who services vegan-friendly small businesses.
  • Company accountant or bookkeeper for online vegan entrepreneurs.
  • Photographer servicing compassionate businesses.
  • Project manager for organic and vegan shop fit-outs.
  • Social media manager for vegan businesses.
  • Copywriting services to help build the profile of vegan entrepreneurs.
  • Study to become a health professional that serves the vegan community using natural cruelty-free practices.

Animal fabrics like wool , leather and silk are often associated with premium and reliable fashion pieces. However, over the last decade, vegan materials have become more innovative, accessible and sustainable. 

As consumers become ecologically and ethically conscious, the demand for high-quality vegan fashion will only increase.

Previously, starting a fashion brand was costly and thus risky. You had to hit the market perfectly to justify ordering huge quantities of stock from suppliers.

Nowadays, you can work on one design at a time, and test your concept using crowdsourcing platforms like Kickstarter and Indigogo—helping to reduce your risk and give you the confidence to scale.

It’s worth noting that vegan customers equally value fair trade practices. So where possible try to keep your production line local with relative wages to your area.

One of the most common triggers for becoming vegan is usually based on education, be it a speech, a documentary or a book . For example, we became vegan after watching Earthlings, and our story is common.

The internet has made online education accessible to everyone. It’s never been easier to acquire creative skills in film, photography, design and writing. 

Furthermore, creators are no longer at the mercy of book publishers, film studios or music labels. You can simply publish your work with the possibility of reaching an audience. 

You can monetize your media through patronage, distributors, brand deals, affiliate commissions, advertising and products. 

Or if you’re really ambitious, see if you can take a piece of the obscene amount of cash Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Apple are throwing at original content. Netflix for example is estimated to spend 19 billion on content in 2021! 

One caveat. Because the barriers to entry for content is so low, you need to produce AMAZING content to cut through the noise. So be prepared to spend hours to become a master of your craft, or hire a talented team of creators to bring your project to life.

Much like vegan education, we can use the internet to skill up in technology. Whether it’s learning how to code or working with developers, you have the potential to create the next greatest vegan app .

The software business can be incredibly lucrative and scalable hence the potential of attracting many investors and reaching the masses.

However, the tech world is insanely dynamic and you can fall as quickly as you can grow. So be prepared to duck, weave and adjust as market conditions change. 

While tech know-how is important, the success of your startup is dependent on how well you reach product-market fit. I suggest you read the Lean Start-Up and apply the principles to developing your concept to give you the best chance of success. 

This is the kind of ideas I had in mind for vegan technology based businesses.

  • Create an app that facilitates the delivery of food from all the vegan food options in your area.
  • Develop a dating app that accurately connects vegan soulmates.
  • Create a concierge service in the form of a mobile app that connects all local ethical tradespeople with vegan customers.
  • Design a line of solar-powered vegan-friendly smartphone accessories.
  • Invent sustainable, vegan materials to be used in various industries.
  • Design an interface that pulls vegan stocks and startups into one place.

Vegan cosmetics and beauty

Cosmetics have always been a massive industry, and the vegan segment of the market is benefiting. It’s predicted that the global vegan cosmetics market will be worth 27 billion by 2027! 

Mindful consumers want cruelty-free, sustainable, organic beauty products without comprising on quality. At the end of the day, you need deodorants that prevent odour, makeup that enhances, skincare that helps your cells thrive.

What’s attractive about cosmetics and beauty is the consumable nature of the products. If you’re able to get customer loyalty, you’ll benefit from repeat purchases. 

With all of that said, the beauty industry is brutal. You need to formulate the perfect product and at the right price point if you want any chance of success. You need to hustle at tradeshows, learn eCommerce and work with retailers to acquire customers. 

Vegan customers are becoming increasingly sceptical about greenwashing, so make sure your communication and transparency of your supply chain and ingredients are airtight.

I’m looking to convert a trailer and turn it into a travelling vegan tea room selling cakes, pastry’s and specialist teas.

I had both an idea and a dream. I wanted to create a place where all vegans will find what they need on a daily basis. And these are all vegan products, products not defined as vegan, but safe for the environment (such as a washing machine, iron or electric cooker) .. After shopping, you can enter Life Style and find all the services related to the pursuit of passions, trips, training, courses, vegan hotels, vegan restaurants, mountain climbing for vegans and all others. It was supposed to be a unique place – the world’s first international e-commerce trading platform. I turned a dream into a reality. After 11 months of hard work, my dream place was created. It’s just that vegan companies prefer to sell on Amazon, although their products are lost among products of dubious quality. Vegans are not interested in having their own, unique place, although it is here that they have a guarantee of the origin of the products and the quality of the products.

I am desperate because I have not started well yet, and I am already bankrupt.

Nobody wants to help me because I’m vegan. I have put everything and my money and my heart into this platform . The investment consumed 300,000 Euro and I don’t know what to do anymore, and I don’t have a penny more.

Hi Nina, I can relate to the emotional rollercoaster of being a vegan entrepreneur or just a business person in general. I’ve gone into debt backing an idea that didn’t resonate with the market and had to learn from the experience. It’s worth taking a step back and seeing if you can get on 20 calls with prospective customers and suppliers to understand what would get them excited about a vegan marketplace, more importantly, what would motivate them to participate and transact.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading the book Will It Fly by Pat Flynn. It’s all about validating your business ideas so you can mitigate the risk of missing the mark. I hope you can successfully pivot your business and make your intended impact.

Hello, Thanks for the advice. I have been an entrepreneur for 40 years and this is my first problem. I try to find a solution, but without desperation. Who would I call? After all, I cannot tell my clients about my problems because they are not affected by it. My platform works fine. I don’t have enough money for an ad that I need to run in at least 20 countries.an This is tough business, not play in business. I just need additional external financing, but on human terms. I would never use a system of dependence on one large investor. That is why I am looking for small investors as this way it is easier to raise the necessary funds. My business partner, who was supposed to finance the advertising campaigns at the start, has withdrawn from the word, and that’s why we are in trouble.

I have been vegan for over 15 + years now and I am a private chef I had to cook regular foods and always offered vegan foods. I decided a year ago that I could not cook regular food and offered just vegan food. But it flopped and I had no clients at all so now I have to close as I cannot afford to stay open anymore. I live in the Algarve, Portugal but we are so behind here on vegan food and movement it takes a long time. There is a few vegan restaurants in my area and they small and do well. I wanted to start a small vegan café but due to the current climate it is so hard to do anything. I am lost what to do next now my brain is blank and I do not know what my next venture could be plus I have very little money to do anything.

Hi Massimiliano, I’m just catching up on the comments. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a tough go at trying to provide vegan food options in your area. It’s promising that some vegan restaurants are seeing success, meaning it’s possible to start a sustainable plant-based food business. With little capital and the current climate, I’d suggest you spend time honing the perfect menu and getting brutally honest feedback from friends and family. A good test to see if they love your food is to see if they naturally request a recipe or ask if you can make it again for them.

I’m not sure what the restrictions are like in Algarve at the moment, but if possible, once you’ve found a winning menu, you could run a small stand at your local markets to get more feedback and build your customer base. But, again, if people aren’t ordering, you need to change your menu until they request your food.

Your heart is in the right place, and I hope you can find the strength to keep on grinding.

Hi Federico, I don’t know much about creating a vegan protein powder. If I were researching, I’d look for examples of successful non-vegan protein powders. First, go to their about page and see if you can find the name of the founder. Then search the founder in Spotify, YouTube etc., to see if you can listen to any interviews and get them insights there. All the best with your venture!

I feel like I am a bit late to the game here as your article is 4 years old by now but some of your ideas have (surprisingly) still not properly been implemented (at least here in the Netherlands there is still a lot of potential) We are a Dutch startup that is developing an algorithm that allows users to find ingredient substitutes in recipes. The idea is that any recipe can be turned vegetarian, vegan or allergen-free with the click of a button. The substitutes are found based on vitamins, minerals, nutrients, structure and flavor of the searched ingredient. As we have built an API, we are looking to integrated with online recipe providers and recipe apps so that soon, hopefully, any recipe can be turned vegan! We are still in development but try it out on bon-api.com and let me know what you think 🙂

Thanks for sharing this page and information. I am following vegan lifestyle and on plant-based diet for last 5 years and a little more. The exciting part is I am planning to start a business that deals with non-dairy alternatives in my local area. Statistics says that in my state, non-vegetarians make 98.6% of the population. I have 2-3 people known to me who follow veganism. Though in my country, preference over veganism is on rise (not so prevalent at my part of the world though). So, it’s a big challenge to open a business to promote vegan food as people here mostly live on meats. But I have decided to take up the challenge and start following my dream. I am starting with non-dairy milk (I named it as meelk), cheese, tofu, okara burger pattie, yogurt and desserts. Let’s see how it goes. Hi Liz, love the idea!

I think with most business ventures, it’s important to start as small as possible to 1) validate the idea and 2) remove barriers to starting.

With that, I would be thinking, what is the smallest menu you could create for the smallest audience in your area? Setup a simple a simple one-page website explaining your menu, what area you service, and how customers can pay. You can set this up on https://www.shopify.com and challenge yourself to get paying customers before the end of the free Shopify trial.

Once you have your menu and website, you could run some targeted Facebook ads to vegans in your area.

Don’t get too attached to your idea. Treat it like a science experiment and stay close to the needs of your customers. Ask potential customers in advance what they would like to see on your menu.

Hi Brelly, from my understanding you don’t need any qualifications to bake and sell food at the markets. However I suggest you reach out to the stall organisers to find out what the requirements are. Not sure if you need a licence, insurance etc. Keep us posted on your progress!

At least where we live, there are quite a few vegan baking mixes on the market. What would be interesting to see is a baking mix with certified organic ingredients and possibly gluten-free, all without compromising taste. Tough ask, but something we’d be interested in if it existed.

What about vegan milk? I know it’s available, but not like the cow milk, especially in our market in Bahrain and general in GCC. The basic things like milk, cheese, ect… Are little to compare with another.

While there are many vegan milks on the market, there’s obviously a demand for it. I would maybe create a formula and do a soft launch at a market stall to see how customers respond. Maybe you could get into flavoured organic milks?

Hi Nora. I think there’s always room for high quality products as long as they’re positioned well. Having said that, there’s been a lot of growth in the areas that you’re interested in. Maybe there’s an opportunity to create a one-stop shop for all of the brands that are making minimalist vegan clothing? That way you can be the curator instead of the maker – bringing all the brands together for a better customer experience. Just a thought. Let us know how you get on.

I have actually been thinking of vegan business ideas myself. After accidentally buying some chocolate chips that had milk in them because they were packaged similarly to ones that didn’t I felt so frustrated and thought, if only there was a grocery store that sold only vegan products I wouldn’t have to worry so much about reading every label so meticulously. I would really like to be part of a vegan catering service…but I am definiteley not a business person. I like to prep food and set up tables and that sort of thing. I have ideas, just not the know-how or the time either right now. Can’t stop working or I’ll lose my house. Can’t start a new business while working…and so it goes.

I’ve thought about this as well. An 100% Vegan grocer with a lot of bulk items that strives to be waste free and sells lots of eco products i.e. bamboo untensils, toothbrushes, reusable straws, etc. The startup and overhead costs are much higher than something online or home based though.

I have been toying with the idea of opening a small vegan eatery for over a year now. My husband is the landlord of a luncheonette that is unfortunately going to go out of business. My friend and I love to cook vegan meals. I have 2 gluten free vegans that live with me (my daughters), so I am used to cooking this way. I enjoy it. Both my friend and I work full time so we were thinking of doing something like a take out only place, cook meals on the weekends, freeze them and let customers have them for later on in the week. There are no vegan places around us, let alone gluten free.

Hi I started becoming a vegan in January 2016 doing the Veganuary Challenge. I found OK to do and interesting especially eating a whole new different healthy kind of way. Hi Robert, love your ambition! There’s always a way. There are some fashion retailers pushing bamboo garments however most of them aren’t organic. There’s definitely an opportunity – particularly with mens clothing as most of what’s in the market is catered towards women. I suggest reverse engineering what other retailers have done in this space. See if you can find their founder stories on the internet. You’ll likely get some nuggets of information and figure out your next steps. Also, don’t be afraid to partner with other entrepreneurs. You might give up some equity but more heads are better than one. You can do it!

From “bleeding” burgers to dairy-free cheese to cruelty-free skincare, there are new plant-based products gracing supermarket shelves, luxury department stores, and restaurants from the fast to the fancy. The vegan market is thriving because consumer attitudes are changing. It’s supply and demand. Now is the time to get into plant-based business.

If you’re a budding entrepreneur , there has never been a better time to jump into the vegan market. If you’ve got a limited budget, don’t be discouraged. There are plenty of ways you can get a business started without breaking the bank.

Identifying a target market is the foundation of building a brand. It’s only when you know who you’re talking to that you can start to develop your business. You can determine your target market by defining your product or service and then researching other similar businesses.

You can find out more about your target market by using resources like Survey Monkey. The site has its own audience panel with respondents from all over the world. It has several different survey templates to choose from and can even build you a custom product concept testing survey.

Alternatively, you could scan through free data, like that available on Google Trends. Google Trends analyzes the top search queries in Google, looking at different regions around the world. Through graphs, it compares the search volume of various different queries over time.

You could also choose to host a focus group. This is when you get together a few people to test and review a product. Eventbrite says the ideal number of people for a focus group is between 10 and 15.

You don’t need to pay an agency to do this for you, you can do it on your own, by posting an ad on Craigslist or posting homemade flyers in relevant areas, for example. If you don’t have the budget, you don’t have to pay participants either. You could keep it as simple as offering a chance to learn about something new and potentially — if you have the cooking skills or resources — a free lunch.

To determine your target audience, spread out your focus groups to include people of different ages or backgrounds. Or aim to hold one with different people represented within that group.

Preparing a Business Plan

Writing a business plan is essential to the success of your business.  It will help you think about your strategy and the specific steps you need to take to reach your goal, including fundraising. According to business magazine Entrepreneur , a perfectly written business plan requires thorough research before you even type the first word.

To help you along, you could use a Business Model Canvas (BMC). According to entrepreneur Alexander Cowan, a BMC will give you the structure of a business plan. It has nine different elements. The first is customer segments. Who are your customers? What do they do? The second is value propositions. What’s different or compelling about your idea? Why would people need or want it?

The third is channels. What channels will you use to get your product or service to the customer? Other elements include customer relationships, revenue streams, key activities, key resources, key partnerships, and cost structure, all of which are explained thoroughly on Cowan’s website.

According to Cowan, BMCs are popular with entrepreneurs and investors because they provide focus, flexibility, and transparency.

Free Resources for Writing a Business Plan

There are plenty of free resources available to help you write a business plan. YouTube, for example, is filled with helpful video tutorials and tips. The Young Entrepreneurs Forum has several videos on its channel about how to write the best business plan. Its videos take you through how to write a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis, how to write a financial plan, and how to write a market research plan, among other things.

Gillian Perkins runs another helpful YouTube channel. Perkins — an entrepreneur and marketing strategist — has more than 280,000 subscribers. She has videos on how to write a business plan, as well as tips on how to start a business with no money, and productivity hacks.

You can also find templates online.  The Prince’s Trust — a UK charity set up to help vulnerable young people — offers several free resources and templates for writing a business plan, as well as tips on how to get started.

Other sites like Small Business Pro, Great Business, and Business Gateway also offer business plan templates that are free to download.

Making Use of Social Media

Once you name your company or product, make sure you grab the relevant domains and social media handles. Don’t underestimate the power and influence of social media, either!  When your business gets going, these platforms will be invaluable marketing platforms for you and one of the easiest ways to grow with a limited budget. Although a social media strategy team can be one of the best spends for a small business, you can start out on your own, mastering many of these techniques for yourself.

You should identify which social media platform is right for you to focus on, and this goes back to your target audience. If your goal is to be business-to-business, consider focusing on platforms like Linkedin. If your target audience is Millennials and Generation-Zers, your focus should be on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Find out where your people are. Are you starting a vegan skincare line? The beauty blogging industry has exploded in recent years, and the main platforms for influencers and bloggers are Instagram and YouTube, so this is where you need to be, too.

Jackie Lutze, social media coordinator for LIVEKINDLY, believes social media is a “no brainer” when it comes to developing a marketing strategy. She says, “it allows business owners to open the dialogue between themselves and their customers, more so than any other marketing option before.”

“For the first time, brands can actually follow and get to know their ideal market,”  she adds.  “Consumers are also wanting to know more about the companies they are supporting, and social media allows entrepreneurs to share more about the business, products, ethics, and why people can feel good about supporting them.”

If it all seems like a lot to manage, there are social media marketing software tools to help you. Hootsuite, for example, has more than 16 million users around the world. It allows you to manage all of your social media in one place. Not sure if that’s the right tool for you? It will give you a free trial period so you have time to decide.

Loomly is another choice. It’s easy to use and offers several different packages, including Solo (for one user operating 10 social media accounts), Pro (for five users operating up to 15 social media accounts), and Small Team (for 10 users operating up to 30 social media accounts). It will also provide you with post inspiration and allow you to see exactly how your post will look before you post it. You could also look into similar platforms like Later, Sprout Social, and Hubspot.

Social media comes in handy again when it comes to networking. PX CEO Frans Van Hulle says, “use platforms like Linkedin, Twitter, and Facebook to produce, comment on, and engage with relevant industry content to build trust among your followers. You’ll also generate inbound networking — contacts will find and reach out to you, so you’ll spend less time having to actively seek more contacts.”

Linkedin is a particularly good platform to use for online networking. Reach out to others, but make sure each message is customized instead of sending out the same generic text. Accept connection requests when relevant people reach out to you as soon as possible. You should also trust the algorithm and review and connect to those who are suggested to you by Linkedin.

Or find out about larger events you can travel to. If you’re in the beauty world, look for anything beauty related. Same with fashion or food. It can be a useful source for finding local vegan business networking events. Talk to people, build contacts, and get advice from others. Eventbrite also lists out events by region and they’re sortable by event type, too.

How to Fund Your Business

When starting a company on a budget, raising capital is going to be one of the most important factors for your success.  Thankfully, there are many ways in which you can secure financial support. 

You can ask friends and family to help you when it comes to finances. Forbes says, “consider inviting family and friends to invest in the company with the understanding that their money may not be returned. In most cases, these friends and family are investing in you, not your business. Both parties should think of this investment as a grant with no strings attached.” You could also consider a small bank loan. Most banks and credit unions offer small business loans. To apply, you will be expected to provide the bank with a full understanding of your business. You will need to prove that you have the skills and expertise to make your business plan work. You could also look for Angel investors. Forbes says, “this affluent individual — or a group of individuals who pool their research and resources — provides capital for a business start-up usually in exchange for convertible debt or ownership equity.”
