Gwendoline Christie on the Three Creatives That Have Helped Shape Her Success

The colorist, the dancer, and the chef.

"I've never really felt conventional. I'm naturally drawn to misfits; to outsiders," Gwendoline Christie tells Bazaar . Today, we're on set with the Emmy-nominated actress, who has been widely celebrated for her portrayal of complex, multi-faceted, and nonconformist women, from Jan Stevens in Flux Gourmet to the formidable Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. " As an artist, I've always been interested in what exists in the margins — the untold stories. It's where I feel most at home."

Christie, 44, has seen her fame catapult in recent years, following starring roles in Netflix's Wednesday and The Sandman. While her talent and magnetism is undeniable—she's articulate, charming, and possesses a thunderous laugh—we're meeting with the actress to explore the notion that behind every successful individual, there's a team of supporters helping to raise them up, drive them forward, and unlock their full potential. "That love you feel from your friends, and for the people that go out of their way to help you, can be transformative," says Christie.

The Colorist

Christie met celebrity colorist Josh Wood in 2018, just after she’d filmed her final scenes for Game of Thrones. "I'd been an admirer of Josh's work for many years. His name kept cropping up in so many fashion shoots I loved," says Christie.

After being introduced by a mutual friend, the star remembers: "I was nervous to meet Josh because he's iconic—a visionary—and someone I'd always wanted to work with. In reality, he's incredibly kind and funny. He wants people to feel good. I never expected to have such a hoot in the chair with him."

"Gwendoline's hair was very short and very bleached," recalls Wood of their first meeting. After seven years playing a character synonymous with androgyny, Christie sought a transformation that would enable her to reconnect with her femininity. The pair worked together to give her the hair she’d been coveting for years — soft, long, and pale platinum. "I wanted hair that felt closer to my natural color and more authentically 'me'; hair that would allow me to express myself and experiment with different looks," she explains.

Working closely with Christie's stylist, Jerry Stafford, Wood helps the actress to get ready for both roles and red carpets, often meeting Christie off hours at his west London salon. "Gwendoline's incredibly experimental with her approach to both beauty and fashion and is constantly pushing me creatively. She brings her own ideas, so it's a wonderfully collaborative process," he says. "She's also got a wicked sense of humor. We can find a joke in every sentence, which makes it brilliant fun."

At six foot three — "I'm extremely tall. It's my defining feature" — Christie has spoken openly about her struggles with being accepted as an actress . To her, her relationship with Wood has been more than just physically transformative. "I feel very lucky to be in Josh's orbit," she says. "He's a brilliant listener, he's incredibly generous with his time, and when he shines his light on you, you feel like he truly sees you. He's given me the gift of self-acceptance and has helped me to feel beautiful."

As a child, Christie loved dance and gymnastics. "It's the ultimate marriage of discipline and freedom," she says. Before meeting, the actress had admired dancer Harry Alexander's work for many years, watching him perform in shows at the Barbican in London. "Harry was always very clearly a star," she says. "He's a sensational dancer. I found such inspiration in his performances and wanted to learn from him."

In 2020, Christie reached out and presented Alexander with the opportunity to become her movement coach. Having previously only ever worked as a dancer at Sadler’s Wells, it was a career move he'd dreamed of. "I was very, very flattered," Alexander recalls. "I'd watched Gwendoline in Game of Thrones but in real life, she was so much more bubbly and engaging than I'd imagined. It made me admire her acting talent even more."

Alexander now helps Christie prepare for TV roles and accompanies the actress on set, supporting her to extend her frame of reference when it comes to the language of physicality. "We talk about each character and what they've been through, what their relationships are like, and how they react to people," he explains. "How do these experiences affect their posture? How do they hold themselves when they're alone?" And even when they're apart, they remain connected. "When I watch Gwendoline on screen, bringing each character to life, I can't help but WhatsApp her to tell her how amazing she is," says Alexander.

As well as encouraging her to embody her characters in new, deeper ways, Christie also credits Alexander with helping her to accept her body. "Harry's taught me so much about posture and gesture, where we hold energy in our bodies, and what that reveals about our psychology," she says. "Inevitably, this has flowed into my everyday life. He's drawn me out of myself and given me more confidence. He's allowed me to embrace who I am and how I was born. I absolutely walk taller as a result of knowing him."

gwendoline christie and margot henderson

"When Gwendoline's in the room, it's never a dull day," laughs head chef and author Margot Henderson, co-founder of Rochelle Canteen in London's Shoreditch neighborhood. Henderson and Christie's friendship first blossomed when Christie was a "frustrated" actress, yet to get her big break. "Margot has been a much treasured friend of mine for a long time now, and her restaurant is legendary," says Christie. "She’s fed me, literally and creatively, for 15 years." First introduced by a mutual friend, Henderson says of their initial meeting: "Gwendoline was extraordinary. Clever, full of energy, great conversation. I think I fell in love."

Margot has since witnessed Christie's meteoric rise to fame, helping her to land her breakout role as Miranda Hilmarson in Top of the Lake by facilitating a conversation with friend and screenwriter Jane Campion, and going on to watch her star in one of TV's most globally recognised shows. "Margot has helped me hugely with my career, thanks to the talented creatives she's introduced me to," says Christie. "Her energy is infectious and she has such a huge passion for life. When I'm around her, I feel like anything is possible; like I can conquer the world."

gwendoline christie and margot henderson

While Henderson reveals that Christie has yet to cook a single dish for her, the pair's most treasured memories are closely linked with mealtimes. "My favorite meals with her have always been at Margot's house, surrounded by her family — her husband, Fergus, and their brilliant children. She just loves bringing people together," says Christie.

"We all need encouragement from our friends"

For Henderson, it's about nurturing those support networks that allow each of us to flourish. "We all need encouragement from our friends," she says. "Gwendoline feels like she's an oddity but she's playing unconventional women. It gives young girls confidence to have a different type of role model to watch." The pair's longstanding friendship has also helped fuel Henderson's own success as a chef. "Gwendoline's brought so much to my life and my business, filling my restaurants with friends and cast members. When she walks into the room, there's an electricity in the air. She's been an incredible support."

gwendoline christie leans on a porsche

As our journey with Christie draws to a close, the actress takes a moment to reflect. "I'm very lucky with the friends I have, and these three individuals are so accomplished and so talented at what they do. Just being around them pushes me to keep growing and evolving. When you're held in a state of love by your friends, you can really achieve anything."

Gwendoline Christie

Highest Rated: 93% Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Lowest Rated: 15% The Darkest Minds (2018)

Birthday: Oct 28, 1978

Birthplace: Worthing, West Sussex, England, UK

With the incredible popularity of "Game of Thrones" (HBO, 2011- ), a number of actors became stars and fan favorites from the show. Once Gwendoline Christie came aboard in the role of Brienne of Tarth, her career took off, leading to featured appearances in "The Hunger Games" films as well as the ultimate fanboy franchise, the resurrection of the "Star Wars" universe. Christie was born in 1978 in Worthing, West Sussex, and grew up near South Downs. Christie grew very tall, 6'3, and was going to be a gymnast, but after injuring her back she turned to acting instead. Christie graduated from Drama Centre London in 2005, and was mentored by Simon Callow, a British actor and author who had featured roles in "Amadeus" (1984) and "Shakespeare In Love" (1998). In the British acting tradition, Christie performed in the theater, playing the Queen in Shakespeare's "Cymbeline," and as Lucifer in "Doctor Faustus." Then Christie went to the big screen with roles in Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" (2009), which featured the last performance of Heath Ledger, and "The Zero Theorem" (2013). Christie was cast as Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones" in July 2011. The character was a cult favorite, and her fans were suggesting online that she would be perfect for the role before she officially came aboard. Christie's first appearance on "Thrones" was on the third episode of season two, which aired on April 15, 2012. As Christie's popularity as an actress grew, she landed the role of Commander Lyme in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part One" (2014) and its second half, the last two installments of the popular young adult franchise. This led to Christie landing in another major franchise with a fervent fan following. Riding the crest of her popularity, Christie portrayed a key villain in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), the long awaited return of the legendary space opera, alongside Lupita N'yongo and Adam Driver.

'Game of Thrones' star Gwendoline Christie

Season 8 of Game of Thrones   was as cruel to Brienne of Tarth as it was kind. In the moments prior to the big Battle of Winterfell, she was knighted by her longtime paramour Jaime Lannister ( Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ), and the pair consummated their relationship, before Jaime abandoned her to run back to his sister, Cersei. But as the dust settled, she was also made Lord Commander of Bran Stark’s Kingsguard, finally fulfilling her seasons-long dreams. Christie’s first Emmy nomination for the role comes as she returns to the London stage in a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream .

There are a total of 10 acting nominations for Game of Thrones ’ final season. Emmy night is going to be quite a party…

Walton Goggins

'The White Lotus' Walton Goggins Says His Experience On Season 3 Is "All Very Meta On Every Level"

I know [laughs]. It’s an amazing way to end the show that has changed all of our lives. It’s changed our lives beyond all comprehension, really. I’m delighted that so many of us got nominated.

There was a documentary released about the production of this final season. The footage from that final table read was extremely emotional.

It was. I remember my first point of contact with the show was, in Season 2, at the readthrough. I remember sitting there, and I had watched the first season, and it was sort of bewildering to me to be surrounded by all these people that I recognized. You start to see it come to life. And I had loved that first season. It was wonderful to have everybody together for that final readthrough. Some people—most people—have read all the scripts. A couple of people wait until the day.

Gwendoline Christie in 'Game of Thrones'

Of course. I didn’t stop. I read from the beginning right through to the end, as soon as I got them. It was deeply, deeply emotional. I thought I was doing fine, and then I went up to speak to David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] to say thanks. They said, “How are you?” I went, “I’m fine.” And then I totally broke down. I think the idea of it all ending suddenly hit me.

You really don’t want to get in touch with that feeling, because you know you’ve got 10 months of really hard shooting ahead of you. There was a huge sense of loss, and a deep sadness, but I wasn’t going to indulge in that emotion. I was just going to focus on the fact that we’ve got to do it again, I had a brilliant storyline, and everybody was really thrilled and galvanized to be doing this.

Was that a feeling you were able to successfully tamp down as you shot the season, or did it come back?

I didn’t subscribe to it at all during shooting. I stayed focused on trying to bring something to life. Every moment, to me, felt like an opportunity. It was hard. The conditions were hard. The material was challenging. I was so absorbed in all of that, and I think everyone else was too.

It was only when it got to the last day of the Winterfell shoot, which was my last day of shooting in Belfast, where it bubbled up. It was also the scene in which Jaime and Brienne part for the last time. There was a bit more to do in Spain, but it would be the last time I worked with some of that crew in Belfast. I was very emotional that day; helpfully, as it turned out. It was a lot [laughs]. I allowed myself to be touched by the circumstances.

When we finished shooting, I had a little wander about. But throughout the day, I was feeling incredibly lucky that my last scene in Belfast was going to be that scene. That I was going to be given some great material to work with as I was saying my goodbyes.

Gwendoline Christie in 'Game of Thrones'

Brienne got several standout moments this year. That was one of them, but not long before she had been knighted at Jaime’s insistence. The juxtaposition of the two was brutal. Did you know that was coming?

No. When I read that scene, I felt incredibly upset about it on the character’s behalf. And then I realized I had moved into that space where I feel deeply, deeply protective of this character. I was also thrilled about it as an actor, because it meant getting to use some real acting muscles. It was a brilliant scene. Nikolaj and I had worked on the relationship between Brienne and Jaime for seven years, and I knew we were going to thoroughly enjoy playing that out.

I did feel angry for the character in that moment, but what was brilliant is that she goes straight back to work, and ultimately, she supersedes her ambition. She wanted to be a member of Renly’s Kingsguard, and in the end she becomes Lord Commander of Bran’s Kingsguard. She’s in charge. It’s all about her skill as a knight. Her abilities, her intelligence. I felt, by the end, like she’d stepped into her own power.

I worked very, very hard on those scenes because I was delighted to be given such good, rich material. And I couldn’t have been more delighted with the scene in which Brienne is made a knight. Ser Brienne. It wasn’t about modifying something for her, or her gender. It was about recognizing her qualities as a human being, and elevating her to that status, and her deserving that. I found that incredibly touching.

This is a character that never smiles. It was something that came from the books, and I always wondered when she would be allowed that smile. It was never there, and it was never appropriate. When it came to the last season, I did wonder if that moment was going to come for her. And there it was.

Also, to have that moment in a room full of people I’ve worked with for eight years, who have helped teach me how to act on camera, and David Nutter, who is a brilliant director I worked together with so well. I think he sensed I was really up for the challenge, and he brought great things out of me. The moment where they all applaud in that scene; it touched me. To have been employed as an actor, and to be able to play this part, which I think is truly unique in terms of women’s roles in mainstream television, and everything that’s encompassed… It’s very special.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie in 'Game of Thrones'

Audiences really rooted for this character. When Jaime runs off after consummating their relationship, people were hurt on her behalf. Did you understand where they were coming from?

Yeah. But I liked that Brienne elects to have that experience. It was a very deliberate moment where she chose to activate the sexual experience. She takes control of the situation, and she takes responsibility for it. I think it was good for her to allow herself to be emotional. She allows herself to display it. It doesn’t make her any weaker just because she is capable of feeling great pain. I’ve actually always felt that Brienne lives in a rich and sensitive emotional world. That coupled with this incredible physical strength, and moral strength, is what makes her so interesting and human.

Nikolaj was your first call on Emmy nominations day, right?

He rang me, and he was with his family. They were all cheering down the phone. I said to him, “I cannot, cannot, cannot believe it.” And he said, “I can.” I was pretty certain he would be nominated, but I hadn’t told anyone that I’d submitted myself other than my partner and my team. But he was always really encouraging about nominations. I would say, “You know, that’d be nice, but it’s not going to happen, and I’m not going to let myself be disappointed.” But Nikolaj was always encouraging.

We’ve just worked so hard together for so many years. We’ve both been really invested in our characters. Part of the pleasure of playing those scenes together was that we were really engaged, and we really wanted them to come to life. We just loved the story, and we both wanted to push each other to try and be better. It has been thrilling to play, and an incredibly satisfying relationship to have had. So mercurial, so undefinable. Brienne and Jaime just have this really captivating relationship.

We twitch about how wonderful it will be that we’ll all be there, and we’ll have our families with us, and we can all celebrate together. It will be such a great way to say thank you and goodbye to this thing that changed our lives beyond all comprehension.

Have you ever let your mind wander to what might become of Brienne in years to come? She has achieved something, but Westeros is a cruel place. Is she going to live an easier life?

I don’t think Brienne cares about things being easy. I think she cares about things being just and fair. She wants to live in a world of equality and respect, but I think she acknowledges that her role in life is to work for that. That’s why her very last line in the series is, “I think that ships take precedence over brothels.” I think we see an acknowledgement there, that she will carry on fighting for what is right.

Gwendoline Christie in 'Game of Thrones'

You, meanwhile, have taken to the London stage with a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream , directed by Nicholas Hytner. I came last night. The atmosphere was electric. It’s a production full of energy, and it turned into a giant party.

That kind of response you got last night is every single night. It’s truly extraordinary. Nick Hytner said he’s never known anything like it. He’s never had a response like that. The audience just doesn’t leave at the end. They want to stay there and keep on celebrating. It becomes a complete party in the end, it really does. I’ve never been involved in a live production that has prompted that kind of response from an audience, ever. It’s electrifying to be a part of.

You really are a part of it. The action happens around standing audience members who are moved to accommodate the production, and you’re moving through them to exit and enter. What were you expecting about how that would work as you rehearsed?

Initially it was intimidating, because I’ve never done anything like that before. It’s been nine years since I was last on stage, and that was all proscenium arch-style. The audience are very separate.

But I think that there is something very smart about changing the way in which it’s viewed as an audience, because the way in which we are viewing our entertainment has also changed. The way in which we’re consuming our drama—our films and our television—has rapidly changed. It’s really exciting that you watch this theater production alter in a way that seems very modern with it being immersive. But also, it’s incredibly ancient, because that’s probably more like how it would have been when it was originally performed.

It can take on a vaudevillian atmosphere, at times, because people become galvanized by the experience en masse . It unites the audience, and that’s something that’s really interesting compared against film and television because that has become much more of an individual experience lately. I think Game of Thrones  was probably one of the last shows on television where, en masse , people were watching the same thing at the same time.

But this was an excellent acting challenge for me, because there’s nowhere to hide. Two things happen. One is that you become extremely sensitized to people’s energies. You start to respond according to the energy you get from that audience. And then, you’re also forced to become extremely disciplined in another sense. Things are moving all the time, people are talking and walking around. It’s very good for re-establishing your attention of what’s going on, and what you give your focus to. It’s been a huge, huge challenge, and really tough at times, but always rewarding.

Does it multiply the feeling that the audience changes a play every time it’s performed? Do you have to stay on your toes as that different energy comes through every night?

Every night is entirely different. And by the end of it I feel quite exhausted, because you are theirs. It is up to you to communicate the play in that moment, and it’s up to you to serve the audience, and to recognize the kind of energies that are there. Some nights, my performance might be geared towards eliciting more laughs than others, judging by what it is they’re responding to.

You find that, that great classical plays can be actually extremely flexible. And so, some nights it becomes intensely emotional, and other nights it becomes extremely light. And there are variations between that, that change, and shift, and morph. It has been one of the biggest learning experiences I’ve had for years, in terms of overall performance. It has been a real shock to the system and a huge challenge.

How 'Game of Thrones' actress Gwendoline Christie became the first female Stormtrooper

Gwendoline Christie, best known as the indomitable Brienne of Tarth on "Game of Thrones," is the feminist hero you're looking for.

Later this year, the Sussex-born actress appears as the first female Stormtrooper in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." She joins another blockbuster franchise this holiday season via "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2."

In honor of Christie's breakout success, we're taking a look back at her meteoric rise to fame.

Born October 28, 1978, Gwendoline Christie grew up in the countryside of Sussex, England.

Christie stood at six-three, and her height soon became an obstacle. Casting directors turned her away because she was too tall.

In an attempt to appear more feminine, Christie wore makeup, heels, and long hair. Coincidentally, it was an aesthetic she liked.

"At one stage I was like, 'I'll give this another six months and if this persists, I'll become a nun," Christie jokes. She says the effortless wardrobe and free food appealed to her.

The series' fans threw their support in online forums behind casting Christie for the role. She took to Twitter to lobby — hard.

"I wanted the part so very badly because from reading the books the character was so like elements of myself," Christie says. "I've not come across a part like this before, whereby the complexities of being an extremely tall woman are explored."

Christie lost over 20 pounds and gained it back in muscle in preparation for her audition. She traded blouses and skirts for androgynous clothing.

But by then, her fate was already sealed. The show's casting director saw Christie perform in "Great Expectations" and was convinced they found their Brienne. She got the part.

Christie has since become a fan favorite, winning hearts for her valor and for challenging gender stereotypes.

Now, Christie's movie career is taking off. This November, she appears as Commander Lyme in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2."

In the books, Lyme is a former champion in the Hunger Games who serves as a military leader in District 13. Katniss describes her a muscular woman with an unforgettable face.

And in December, Christie takes on what could be a career-defining role in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." She plays Captain Phasma, the franchise's first female Stormtrooper.

Captain Phasma is no ordinary Stormtrooper. She wears chrome armor and a tattered black cape.

Phasma serves on the First Order, a military group inspired by the Galactic Empire.

Christie worked with director J.J. Abrams to carve out the character. The armor, she says, allows her to focus on body language and voice, not looking beautiful.

It felt familiar. "I don't think many female actors get the opportunity to play a part where they're not having to think about the way their face looks," Christie says, "but I found exactly the same thing with Brienne of Tarth, and that was very liberating."

We don't know what's next for Christie. Right now, she's juggling press tours for both films while also filming season six of "Game of Thrones" overseas.

With two more major franchises in her pocket, Christie is a rising star to watch.

Interview | Gwendoline Christie talks her groundbreaking ‘Star Wars’ role

By Attitude Magazine

biography awards trivia imdbpro gwendoline christie

From  Game of Thrones’  Brienne of Tarth to  The Hunger Games’  Commander Lyme ,  the Amazonian Gwendoline Christie is no stranger to playing some seriously kick-ass warrior women – and that’s only set to continue with her new role as Captain Phasma in the film we’ve spent all of 2015 waiting to see:  Stars Wars – The Force Awakens .

Attitude’s Cliff Joannou caught up with the 37-year-old to find out what she makes of her character’s ground-breaking place in the legendary series, her growing status as a lesbian icon and whether she’d snog, marry or avoid Yoda or Chewbacca (it’s s a question we should all ask ourselves, frankly).

Naturally there are some very minor clues about Gwen’s character to follow, but read on to find out what Brienne of Tarth made of going intergalactic this year…

gwen2

So the last time we saw you  was  at the Attitude awards when you presented to Vivienne Westwood! She delivered a rather inspiringly expansive speech…

Yes ,  she  did! I think Vivienne was told she could have five  minutes,  but she had a lot of very worth while things to say. And she was entertaining. It was brilliantly informative and erudite, but th o roughly charming. I couldn’t believe I was asked to do that. She’s been in our minds for such a long time as a revolutionary thinker and the idea that you’re the one who gets to present that person with an award is a big deal. It’s a big to deal to me. I’d never been to the Attitude awards, but I knew people who had who said it’s always a real blast!

You’ll have to come back next year.

Yes, please!

Onto the film though. You’ve developed this identity for playing these empowering female roles – who would you say is your ultimate feminist icon?

That’s very nice of you so say, thank you.  There’s  two answers to what you’ve said. I’ve been very lucky in that I have gone where the work is and the work has been good. As an actor, you can have ideas about the kind of work you want to do, but you can’t dictate what that is. And it happened that these two incredible parts came along, and I feel very lucky to play them. In terms of my ultimate icon, a classic example is Germaine Greer, but I think Grace Jones is an example of a woman who is entirely herself, she does what she wants to do, she is unselfconscious and she’s totally at ease with who she is. And she’s had an incredible career! Of being a muse, a model and a singer and writer, but I thinks she’s more than that, she’s living art.

How do you feel about being a lesbian icon?   You play these really strong characters that are  usually  cast as  male. You tick a lot of the boxes. Is it something you’ve ever really thought about?

Never before! That’s thoroughly nice. I don’t think anyone has ever said to me that I might be a lesbian icon, but I think  we need more of them don’t we?  What I’m interested in is diversity and I don’t feel the need to just be one thing or really plough one field, I’m interested in playing lots of different sorts of parts, and I’m interested in what we consider to be the margins of society, and the people that might think of themselves as misfits or outsiders. It’s interesting to me. What’s encouraging is in a film like Star Wars , we have one of those characters. It still blows me away now when I look at the poster and see that Captain  Pha sma  is looking incredible, stage  centre.  Because that ’ s part of what it means.

gwen

You must look at that poster and say, ‘that’s me!’

It’s so wild! It really is. But it’s what it represents. And what it represents, as you identify, is something unconventional and empowering.

When was the first time you ever saw Star Wars , was it later in life or as a kid?

I saw  it  when I was a child, when I was 6 years old. It was also Christmas. Maybe that’s part of why we love it so much, that it’s always around Christmas. It has that magic to it. What people have really wanted with this film, The Force Awakens, and what Disney and  Lucasfilm  have done, is give people that experience. And a surprise! You know how it is with trailers for example, there’s so much information and you feel like you’ve seen the whole film. There is so much online and those things mean that there aren’t so many surprises in life, there just aren’t, and as a consequence this film is special because you will go to the cinema and you will have that experience and a surprise.

It was toute d that you’re the first female  S tormtrooper , and there’s more of Captain  Phasma  in the second film, is that true?

I genuinely have no idea! It’s very encouraging to me that you say we see more of her in the next film.

Do you know her  backstory ? How much are you informed about what’s happened and the bigger picture?

I haven’t yet been given any official information saying ‘this is who this character is going to be’. Because, as we know from the Star Wars films, the direction they’re going can be back, for example with episodes 4, 5 & 6 and then 1, 2 & 3.  In terms of the future?  I really don’t know. I wish I did because then I could give you something more interesting!

Did you ever feel insecure about your height when you were younger? Were you ever discouraged  from acting ?

Growing up, the emphasis was never placed on my physical  appearance,  it was only ever based on my passions and interests. I think everybody has something that makes  them  different that people pick up on, but I’ve actually found it now to be something that’s made me stand out. It’s made me be looked at differently. In a way that’s incredibly positive. Because I think what we’re seeing is in a character like Captain  Phasma , people want to see something that’s different. And people have more of a voice due to the  internet , they can say what it is that they want. They can respond as well, I feel very overwhelmed that people seem to like the character, but what that says to me is people want to see something that’s more representative of their society and them. We’re all individuals and unique, and we’d like to see a greater diversity in our entertainment.

star-wars-the-force-awakens-captain-phasma-gwendoline-christie

You’re the first female  Stormtroopers . Do you think there are other female  Storm troopers ?

Yes , I do. I think that  was a smart move. It makes it more real and more of a reality. It also means that this character is not an anomaly. We look at this character and the person, and why they’re like that, more than just their gender.

The First Order is an evolution of The Empire. You’re playing a villain in the film. Do people feel intimidated w hen they meet you because of this and the other  roles that you play?

I’ve got absolutely no idea .  No one’s ever said that to me. I might not be observant enough. No one has acted scared around me. But it’s my job. They’re very much characters that I’m playing. And I’ve been very lucky that they’ve all been unique, but I haven’t experienced  that yet. Maybe I should have?

What’s  your next ideal role?

I’d really like  to  do some theatre again. When I was at school, I would love and read classical work. I would read it and think I wanted to be in the play, but I would always want to play the male parts. I think I’d  like to play a female  Iago . T hat’s what I’d like to do.

Snog, m arry, avoid: Yoda, Chewbacca or  Maz Kanata?

O kay, I’d marry  Maz  Kanata. Hmmm… W ho  would you  snog ?

I’d probably  snog  Yoda,  and avoid Chewbacca because I don’t know how often he washes and conditions all that hair.

Okay!  Marry  Maz  Kanata.  Snog  Yoda. And avoid Chewbacca,  because of the t eeth.

Star Wars – The Force Awakens is out now.

10 Things You May Not Know About Gwendoline Christie

(Photo: Getty Images) You probably know Gwendoline Christie as Game of Thrones ' Brienne of Tarth and Star Wars ' Captain Phasma. She's an actress who can be tough, vulnerable and funny all at the same time. This week she returns in the dark comedy movie  Flux Gourmet. Here are 10 things you may not know about this ultra-talented Brit: 1. She was told her height would limit her acting career. Christie, who stands at 6ft 3, recalled in an interview with  news.com.au : "I went to a brilliant drama school but was made aware that I would probably never work because I didn’t look the same as most actors." Even her agent tried to manage her expectations, with her saying, "I had done a lot of theater, but when I told my agent that I’d love to work on screen, he said, 'Well, good luck with that.'" 2. Happily, she has now fully embraced her height. Christie has gone beyond putting up with people's cruel jokes about her stature. "Up until a year ago, I would still entertain the notion that I was a freak, that I was really androgynous, that we should all make jokes about it," Christie told Love Magazine in 2020. "But actually I didn't regard myself as particularly androgynous, simply taller than the average woman. Because being tall is seen as some kind of blessing, people think it's OK to humiliate you and make jokes about you being of indeterminate gender, but I don't feel the need to reduce myself in that way anymore, and I don't think I need to allow other people to be reductive about me in that way." 3. Tilda Swinton helped to make her believe she could become an actress. Christie was inspired by Swinton because, like her, she didn't fit the mold of what a typical film star looks like. "When I saw Tilda Swinton in Orlando , and I watched this incredible woman that was so pale and so unlike the kind of Hollywood actors I was used to seeing, I remember thinking, ‘Well, she is in a film, she is otherworldly, and is definitely outside of the room,'" Swinton told news.com.au . "I realized that maybe there is a place for me too." 4. She's also a massive fan of Madonna.  Christie has idolized the pop singer since she was eight years old. "It's not because she's an amazing, incredible icon, but also because of what she represents. She's refused to comply with pre-existing forms of how women should be presented in society. She's been defiant in that," Christie told stuff.co.nz . "A woman who continues to dismantle prejudices about ageing, about gender and I think the role she's played in society shouldn't be underestimated." You can watch Christie dancing with Madonna on stage here , but be warned that the clip contains that very salty language. 5. Before her acting career took off, she worked as a research assistant for Simon Callow . Christie told The Guardian that as soon as she arrived at Callow's house for an interview, "kindness poured out of him." Callow later helped to build Christie's confidence as an actor by dishing out tough love and constructive criticism. "At the time I was scared to say that I wanted to be an artist," Christie recalled. "I was scared of how that sounded. That it was naff, or a cliché, or corny. That it wasn’t realistic. Simon would say: 'Be an artist.' He came to my plays and gave me feedback. Which, sometimes, could be incredibly near the knuckle." 6. She also moonlighted as a model. In 2003, Christie appeared on the cover of "Strict Machine," a single by British electronic band Goldfrapp . You can check out the cover featuring Christie in a rabbit mask here . 7. When she was growing up, she had kind of a weird crush. The objection of her affection? Basil Brush , a glove puppet fox who's been a favorite on British children's TV since the 1960s. Christie shared her unlikely crush during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show guest hosted by Jack Whitehall .

8. Back in 2019, she submitted herself for an Emmy nomination when HBO opted not to. Christie's proactive approach paid off when she duly received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. "I checked that it wasn’t an inappropriate thing to do, and I was told it wasn't," she told the Los Angeles Times . "People submit themselves all the time. I truly never expected it to manifest in a nomination and I don’t think anybody else did either. But I just had to do it for me. And I had to do it as a testament to the character [Brienne of Tarth] and what I feel she represents." 9. Her partner is award-winning British fashion designer Giles Deacon. In interviews, Christie doesn't often talk about Deacon, her partner of around nine years, but she did tell British Vogue : "He’s an extraordinary person, he works with such great sensitivity, and he’s unafraid of making woman bold and intelligent." 10. And finally, she was once asked for a selfie in a restaurant bathroom. We knew Game of Thrones fans were intense, but not quite as intense as this. As Christie recalled on The Graham Norton Show , the selfie request came at the most awkward moment imaginable.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth in HBO's Game of Thrones.

You Won’t Want To Miss Any of Gwendoline Christie’s 10 Best Performances

Image of Benedetta Geddo

I don’t know about you, but the first thing I see whenever I come across a clip or photo or fancam or video of Gwendoline Christie is wife material. And it has been like that ever since she stepped on the scene kicking the living daylights out of Renly Baratheon’s knights in Game of Thrones .

All jokes aside, Gwendoline Christie is, in my very personal opinion, one of the most striking actresses working today, and I’ve enjoyed a lot of her work—especially, it has to be said, on television . So here I am counting down her ten best performances so far, a little handy guide in case you only know Christie as Brienne of Tarth or the face under Captain Phasma’s shiny helmet and would like to catch up on her career.

A couple of disclaimers before we start: While I’ve tried to remain as objective as possible, a bit of my personal taste has of course slipped through. Also, you’ll only find movies and television shows on this list, even though Christie is very much active on the theatre scene, as well—so here’s a little shoutout for the 2019 Bridge Theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream where she plays Titania.

10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

Christie appears briefly in The Hunger Games franchise, it’s true, but then again, I love this franchise so much that I simply have to include it on this list. For those who might not know every single frame of these four movies as I do, Christie stars as the rebel Commander Lyme of District 2. Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss and Liam Hemsworth’s Gale meet her when they are flown into District 2 to help conquer the Nut, a fortress that blocks the revolution’s forces from entering the Capitol.

9. The Personal History of David Copperfield

The Personal History of David Copperfield was directed by Armando Iannucci and released in 2019. Christie stars as Miss Jane Murdstone, the unmarried older sister of Mr. Murdstone, who marries the titular David Copperfield’s mother. Miss Murdstone is incredibly mean to David and encourages his new step-father to be as well, in perfect Charles Dickens style.

8. Top of the Lake: China Girl

A joint United Kingdom-Australia-New Zealand production released in 2017, Top of the Lake: China Girl is the second series after 2013’s Top of the Lake —both created by New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion. Gwendoline Christie stars in all six episodes of this miniseries as a constable of the Sydney Police Force who becomes the partner of the protagonist detective du jour—played by actress Elisabeth Moss—as they investigate the mysterious death of an Asian girl whose body was recovered in Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

7. Our Friend

Our Friend , a biographical drama directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, was released in 2019. Christie stars as Teresa, a hiker that one of the movie’s three leads and the titular “friend”—played by Jason Segel—encounters as he’s backpacking through the Grand Canyon while in a very dark mental state. Teresa actually realizes that he’s not in the best place emotionally and offers him her support, effectively turning him around and preventing potential suicidal behaviors.

6. In Fabric

Directed by Peter Strickland, In Fabric is a 2018 horror comedy that follows a haunted red dress that cycles through a series of owners, of course tormenting each and every one of them. Christie stars as Gwen, the much older girlfriend of the dress owners’ teenage son—a relationship that of course deeply worries her. Christie is an antagonist of sorts, which is always nice to see, plus I have to admit that I adore the dark-adjacent look she has throughout the movie.

5. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Christie appears in the first two movies of Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy: The Force Awakens , directed by J. J. Abrams in 2015, and The Last Jedi , directed by Rian Johnson in 2017. She plays the role of Captain Phasma, the commander of the stormtroopers serving the First Order. While Phasma’s role within the story isn’t that large, she strikes an impressive sight on the screen, especially considering that she never takes off her chrome armor. The character was actually reprised throughout a wide array of Star Wars productions, from video games to the animated Star Wars Resistance series—where she was alternately voiced by Christie or actress Ellen Dubin.

4. Wednesday

The first season of the ongoing Netflix take on the iconic character of Wednesday, eldest daughter of the Addams Family, saw Christie star in a very prominent role as Larissa Weems, shapeshifter and principal of Nevermore Academy—the private school for supernatural-adjacent kids where Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday is sent to study after being expelled from her “normal” school. In fact, Principal Weems herself used to be a pupil at Nevermore, where she was roommates with Wednesday’s mother, Morticia. Considering Weems is the principal of a school where the very willful Wednesday doesn’t want to be, the two characters clash more often than not.

3. Flux Gourmet

Flux Gourmet is a black comedy directed by Peter Strickland, which came out in 2022 and actually received a nomination at that same year’s British Independent Film Awards for Best Ensemble Performance. The story follows a trio of experimental artists who move to a remote institution where they can practice their art. Christie stars as Jan Stevens, a mysterious and incredibly wealthy benefactor who owns the institution and is funding the entire artistic project. Just like every other character in Flux Gourmet, Jan Stevens is deeply embroiled in all the vendettas, power struggles, and performances that take place throughout the course of the plot.

2. Game of Thrones

Gwendoline Christie joined the cast of Game of Thrones during the show’s second season back in 2012—and her character is one of the few who makes it to the end alive, which is definitely saying something. She stars as Brienne of Tarth, skilled with a blade and with a sense of honor that most knights could only dream of, a woman who is very much unique in a society such as the Seven Kingdoms. In my humble opinion, Brienne’s entire narrative arc with Jaime Lannister, especially in season three, is some of the best character work that Game of Thrones has ever done—before throwing it all down the drain in that garbage fire of an ending, that is.

1. The Sandman

Few roles are probably as fascinating as that of Lucifer, in whatever form those roles may come. And so, even if it was only for one episode, Christie’s own take on the Morningstar has earned the top spot on my list. She can be found playing a soft-spoken, cherub-haired and absolutely lethal version of Lucifer in The Sandman , the Netflix show based on the comics of the same name created by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. The main character, Morpheus, descends into Hell to find his stolen possessions and ends up engaging in a battle of wits with Lucifer, a scene that is probably one of the best of the entire show.

Gwendoline Christie

Gwendoline Christie Celebrity Profile

Bio: Gwendoline Christie  (born October 28, 1978 in Worthing, West Sussex, England) is a British model and actress. Gwendoline trained as a gymnast as a child, but a spinal injury forced her to abandon that career. Instead, she shifted her focus to acting, eventually graduating from the Drama Centre London in 2005. Gwendoline’s height caught the attention of photographer Polly Borland who made her the subject of a series of photographs between 2002 and 2008.
