Lovebirds are one of the most popular pet parrot species, and for those who are familiar with them, it's no surprise. Beautiful and intelligent, these little birds have been one of the most beloved types of African parrot for more than 100 years. However, there are a lot of myths out there about lovebirds, their behavior, and what it's like to keep them as pets. If you're interested in learning more about what lovebirds are like, then you should read on to discover basic facts about these feisty little birds.

Lovebirds Normally Don't Talk

Although they are a type of parrot, and they do have the ability to mimic human speech, lovebirds are not among those species that most would consider  talking birds . This is because they very rarely decide to speak, and if they do choose to mimic a sound, more often than not they repeat simple noises such as whistles or household sounds such as doorbells and microwaves. It is not known why some lovebirds are more prone to mimicking speech than others, but it is widely believed that those who do learn to talk are taught from a very young age.

There Are Several Types of Lovebirds

There are many different types of lovebirds. There are nine separate sub-species of these little parrots, each carrying their distinct traits and characteristics. These include the masked lovebird, the black-cheeked lovebird, the Fischer's lovebird, the Nyasa lovebird, the Swindern's lovebird, the red-faced Lovebird, the Abyssinian lovebird, the Madagascar lovebird, and the beloved peach-faced lovebird. The peach-faced lovebird, which is the most popular, can be identified by the rainbow of yellow, green, and blue on their bodies as well as their bright peachy-pink faces. While the different types of lovebirds have differences in looks and temperament, on average, all of the lovebirds will live for up to 20 years in captivity.

Lovebirds Are One of the Smallest Parrot Species

While they are true parrots, lovebirds are one of the smallest members of the parrot family. On average, most lovebirds fall between 5 and 7 inches in length at maturity, when measured from the beak to the end of the tailfeathers. Their small size has worked to push their popularity among those who live in apartments and other small spaces. Many of these bird lovers have found it easier to house and care for these little birds instead of attempting to keep a larger parrot species such as a macaw or a cockatoo.

Lovebirds Are Not Always Best Kept in Pairs

It is a widely purported myth that you should never own a solitary lovebird and that if they are not kept in pairs, they will die of depression. While it is true that they are extremely social birds who thrive on interaction and must be socially stimulated, in many cases, bird owners should keep single lovebirds. This is because these birds breed readily in captivity, and most bird owners are not capable of caring for an entire family of parrots. It is also worth noting that birds kept in pairs tend to bond with each other and shun human interaction. Those who would like their bird to be affectionate and open to being handled by human hands have found that it's best to keep birds by themselves and devote as much time as possible to playing and socializing with them so that their needs are met.

Lovebirds Are Very Active

Like all parrots, lovebirds are extremely active birds that need quite a bit of exercise to stay in top physical condition. Those interested in adopting a lovebird must be willing and prepared to give their feathered friend a bird-safe place to play outside of its cage for several hours per day. This will allow the bird to exercise all of the muscle groups that it needs to stay healthy, as well as provide important mental stimulation that these very intelligent animals need.

Birds are very special animals that have particular characteristics which are common amongst all of them. For instance, all of them have feathers, wings and two legs. Similarly, all birds lay eggs and are warm-blooded. They are very essential for our environment and exist in different breeds. Thus, an essay on birds will take us through their importance.

Importance of Birds

Birds have different sizes and can be as small as 2 inches and as big as 2.75 metres. For instance, bee hummingbird (smallest) and ostrich (largest). Bird’s existence dates back to 160 million years ago.

There are different types of birds that exist which vary in characteristics. For instance, there are penguins that cannot fly. Further, there are birds that are known for their intelligence like Parrots and Corvidae.

Moreover, we have peacocks which are beautiful and symbolize rain and good weather. Next, there are bats and vultures as well. Birds connect very closely to the environment and are quite intuitive.

They can predict the weather conditions and some are kept near coal mines for the prediction of a mine explosion. It is because they are sensitive to the release of high levels of carbon monoxide. They are quite social and enjoy singing as well. Birds enjoy the freedom of moving anywhere without boundaries.

My Favourite Bird

My favourite bird is the parrot. It is a colourful bird that is present in many parts of the world. It comes in many shapes, sizes and colours. Parrots are famous for having vivid colours.

Some have a single, bright colour while others have a rainbow of different colours. Parrots are usually small and medium in size that mostly eats seeds, nuts and fruits. The lifespan of a parrot depends on its species.

Larger ones like cockatoos and macaws live for 80 years while the smaller ones like lovebirds live for around 15 years. In fact, parrots are quite intelligent. They have the ability to imitate human speech which is why many people keep them as pets.

Consequently, they are also the most sought-after type of bird for commercial purposes. All over the world, people are taking measures to ensure parrots get nice treatment. Many cultures also consider them sacred.

Parrots are highly intelligent and thrive at their best when they are free and not captured in cages. I used to have a parrot when I was little and I never kept it in a cage. It used to sit on my shoulder wherever I went and never flew away. Parrots are my favourite bird.

What Is A Lovebird?

Did you catch the fact that lovebirds are parrots? Yes, although they are small parrots, they are still parrots. They belong to the order Psittaciformes , which includes all the parrots. They have a hooked bill and zygodactyl feet (two toes point forward and two point backward).

Lovebird species can be divided into those with prominent white eye rings — the masked, or yellow-collared ( A. personatus ), the Fischer’s ( A. fischeri ), the black-cheeked ( A. nigrigenis ) and the Nyasa, or Lilian’s ( A. lilianae ) — and those without an eye ring — peach-faced, or rosy-faced ( A.  roseicollis ), black-winged, or Abyssinian, ( A.  taranta) , red-headed, or red-faced, ( A. pullarius ), Madagascar, or grey-headed, ( A. canus ) and the black-collared, or Swindern’s, ( A. swindernianus)  lovebird. Some lovebird species come in many color mutations, which are produced by selective breeding to bring out certain color traits.

In the wild, lovebirds live in small flocks and eat fruit, vegetables, grasses as well as seed. The Abyssinian, or black-winged lovebird, has a specialized diet that includes native figs, which is why they are so rare in captivity.

Native Region / Natural Habitat

Most lovebird species are native to the continent of Africa; the exception is the Madagascar (grey-headed) lovebird, which is native to the island of Madagascar.

Of the nine species of lovebirds, six are listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources . However, three of the species have some endangerment concerns. The Fischer’s lovebird and Nyasa lovebird are both Near-Threatened, which is one step closer to Endangered than the six species. The black-cheeked lovebird is the most endangered in the wild of all the lovebirds. It is listed as Vulnerable, which is only one step away from Endangered.

Care & Feeding

Like most birds, lovebirds love to exercise and require the largest cage that your budget and space can afford. Lovebirds that are cooped up in a small cage and never given any freedom tend to become neurotic and can develop self-mutilating habits. Toys are a must for these active parrots. Keep in mind that lovebirds are strong chewers, so choose toys that can stand up to chewing without causing a hazard. With proper care and a well-balanced diet, a lovebird can live between 12 and 15 or more years.

Good nutrition is all about balance for lovebirds , just as it is for most birds. A balanced diet provides the essential classes of nutrients : water, protein, carbohydrates and fiber, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. A seed-only diet is a recipe for malnutrition, and malnutrition causes many nutrition-related ailments . The best lovebird feeding option is formulated diets that include the essential nutrients and don’t give a bird the choice to pick through and eat only the bits he likes. Variety is also important for birds, so supplement formulated diets with bird-safe vegetables, fruit, and even healthy table foods (minus any sauces or seasoning). Learn which foods to avoid , and always ask your veterinarian before offering a food to your lovebird if you have any concerns.

The Lovebird belongs to a group of small parrots in the taxonomic genus Agapornis . There are nine different species of these birds, all of which live in Africa or Madagascar. These birds are also common pets, though not as popular as budgies .

Description of the Lovebird

Each species of these birds is slightly different in appearance, but their shapes and sizes are similar. They are small parrots, with rounded heads and relatively large beaks.

All of the different species are green, though some have orange, yellow, gray, black, or red on their heads and necks. Most Lovebirds are five or six inches long, and weigh about two ounces.

• Agapornis – The genus name of this group of birds literally translates to “Lovebird.” The genus name comes from the Greek words “agape” and “ornis,” or “love” and “bird” respectively.
• What’s in a Name – They aren’t called Lovebirds for nothing! These parrots are monogamous, and bond with their mate for their entire lifespan. To establish pair bonds, they feed one another small pieces of food. Usually, the male is the one that feeds the female.
• Love Around the World – Like many pets, sometimes people accidentally (or purposefully) introduce these birds into the wild outside of their natural range. These introduced flocks, known as feral populations, live in Arizona, Texas, California, Australia, and more.

Habitat of the Lovebird

Different Lovebird species inhabit different ecosystems. Some species live in similar habitats, while others live in drastically different areas. Nearby water sources are important, and usually a feature of any species’ preferred habitat.

Some of the different types of habitats these birds live in include woodlands, forests, desert edges, scrub forest, savanna, and more. Some species live close to human habitations and cities, including farms, parks, and gardens.

Distribution of the Lovebird

These birds live across Africa, and one species lives in Madagascar. The range of each bird is different, and some species live across larger areas, while others live in a restricted location.

The populations of some species do overlap with those of other species on occasion. Some of the different regions of Africa that they live in include Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Ethiopia, and more.

Diet of the Lovebird

Lovebirds are herbivores, which means that they only eat plants. They eat a variety of different foods, including seeds, fruits, berries, and more. Most of their foraging occurs on the ground, particularly for those species that feed more heavily on seeds.

Some species have pickier diets, and feed on only a few different types of food. Other species are generalists, and eat just about any type of fruit, berry, or seed.

Lovebird and Human Interaction

Like budgies , Lovebird flocks sometimes feed on agricultural crops. This leads to conflicts with farmers, but the extent of this damage varies from case to case. Human impact on these birds varies from species to species.

Some of the primary dangers to these birds are habitat destruction and capture for the pet trade. The IUCN lists the black-cheeked Lovebird as Vulnerable , the Nyasa and Fischer’s Lovebird as Near Threatened, and the rest as Least Concern.

Domestication

Humans have semi-domesticated these birds. We have selectively bred the few species that we keep as pets for hundreds of years.

Does the Lovebird Make a Good Pet

Yes, Lovebirds do make good pets. The only ones you should keep as pets, however, are the birds that humans breed in captivity. Wild animals never make good pets, and can carry diseases that could injure or kill other birds.

Lovebird Care

It is important to provide plenty of space for your Lovebirds to fly and exercise. All of them are social, and unless you plan on spending hours with your bird every single day, you should buy two birds.

You can feed your birds commercially prepared seed, and supplement their diet with a variety of fruits and berries. It is important that you carefully and gently handle your birds and hand feed them to properly socialize them, so they do not bite.

Behavior of the Lovebird

As their name might suggest, Lovebirds are affectionate and social birds. They live in groups known as flocks. Flocks of these birds preen each other and vocalize in the morning, before moving off as a group to forage.

Different species feed on different food sources, and some forage on the ground while others search for fruit in the trees. Sometimes, when food is especially plentiful, multiple flocks congregate in the same area.

Reproduction of the Lovebird

These birds are monogamous, and continue to mate with the same partner for life. Their courtship behavior varies from species to species. Some feed one another to strengthen their bonds, while others sing or dance.

Most clutches contain five or six eggs, which the female incubates for about three weeks. It takes around a month for the chicks to fledge. The young gain their independence shortly after they begin to fly.

Lovebirds as Pets: Living with a Lovebird – what to expect

Living with a lovebird (and other pets):.

Lovebirds have the fun personality of parrots, with the advantage of being more manageable due to their small, compact size.

They are mostly known for their affectionate behavior towards their “chosen mate.” They love nothing more than “hanging out” with their bonded mate ( which can be his or her owner , or another bird).

These little birds are truly devoted to their owners. This, however, may cause problems of jealousy towards other birds and other pets (including cats and dogs).

These brave little beings will not think twice about attacking other birds much larger than themselves, even cats and dogs — anybody indeed whom they perceive as rivals for your attention.

Most of them are true clowns, playing for hours at a time. They love hanging from their toys, resting in their birdie tents, riding on their owner’s shoulder.

Their most favorite place of all is usually their owner’s shoulder; snuggling up to his or her neck or hiding in their sweaters. When they get bored, they are likely to chew on clothing and jewelry, and pull off buttons.

So it’s best to protect your clothes when you have your pet with you.

• To save your necklaces / jewelry from being destroyed and to protect your lovebird from heavy-metal toxicities , I recommend against wearing any necklaces when your bird is with you. Instead, you may want to consider a “ birdie necklace” made from bird-safe chains with small bird toys attached to the links – this will keep your pet’s attention off your clothing and, instead, they will play with the “birdie necklace” that you can carry around your neck.

Lovebirds are “cuddly birds” and love to snuggle into their lovie-tent – that’s where they usually like to sleep. Lovebirds, and other “cuddly” birds – such as conures — just love these “retreats” …

If you are “handy,” it’s easy enough to make your own “lovie-tent” — I would probably use a thick and warm “arm” section from an old jacket or coat (fake fur interior would be ideal), and hang it up in his or her cage.

This would make a natural “tunnel” for him or her to climb into when sleeping time comes around.

Please make sure to finish it nicely, without hanging threads that he could entangle himself into and possibly get strangled – this actually happened with my lovebird’s mate.

Always look out for loose threads. I personally would put my life at risk handling a sowing needle 😉 and prefer to buy his tents. Each lasts a few years.

I would also recommend being creative in the way you furnish his cage. I have a coconut in Solei’s cage — with a couple of “lovebird-sized” holes in it for him to crawl into; and he loves that one too. You can also get baby toys at garage sales very cheaply. Many of them also make great bird toys! 

Lovebirds as Pets:

Provided lovebirds are well socialized, they make wonderful pets. They do require just about daily socialization though. Don’t continue to ignore a lovebird and expect it to stay tame . That won’t happen.

It’s a great bird for someone who REALLY wants a cuddly bird and is willing to provide daily interaction to his / her pet.

It is difficult to tame an adult lovebird though, but if you come across a “throw-away” lovebird, please give him or her a chance . I have seen them develop into loved pets.

However, the easiest way is to get them young and handfed. 

What Species of Lovebirds?

Well-socialized lovebirds generally make the best pets. In the past, I have bred and handfed both masked/eye-rings and peach-faces and my personal experience was that I had to spend MUCH more time with the eye-rings (which includes the masked and Fisher lovebirds) to get them tame – and after all that, they wouldn’t STAY tame.

As beautiful and cute as they were as babies, and notwithstanding the amount of time I spent with them — I was not successful in keeping any eye-ring lovebirds tame.

This being said, I have heard of several people with masked lovebirds as pets and they insist that their blackmasked or fisher’s lovebirds are wonderful pets.

So my disability to keep masked lovies tame may have been the specific family / genetic traits of the breeding pairs that I had at the time. The obvious dedication by masked lovebird owners seem to support that theory.

In fact, one web visitor sent me the below photos of her beloved pet blue-masked lovebird “Taco” who, to our deepest regrets, passed on recently.

Lovebirds and Other Pets in the Household:

I have owned cats, dogs and birds concurrently. I now have one handicapped cockatiel, Charlie — who lives on a tray and our cat has free access to him, and in many years has shown no aggression whatsoever towards him.

In fact, Charlie aka Cuddles flies off his tray at least once a day (whenever he gets spooked), and we find him on the floor when we come home after work — and have found that the cat would never hurt him. You can train cats and dogs to behave around birds.

I have trained quite a few cats (including feral cats). It is surprisingly easy. By the way, our cat is SCARED of our lovebird . Don’t tell anybody!

Lovebirds and Other Birds in the Household:

Many people believe lovebirds must be kept in pairs; however, I found this not to be true – provided you have time to spend with your pet.

A single lovebird tends to be a better pet because it is bonded with you rather than to another lovebird. However, if you have little time to spend with your lovebird, you may want to consider getting him or her a mate.

They are social birds and need interaction with another being. I found that they stay tame with you (provided you spend SOME time with him or her), if you manage to pair him or her up with another species.

I successfully paired my lovebird up with a cockatiel. It took some time of keeping them in adjoining cages and slowly allowing them to interact outside the cage.

But within a couple of months, they were a bonded pair — and BOTH remained tame and friendly with me! 

Talking Ability:

Lovebirds rarely talk , but there is a chance they may learn to mimic human speech if taught to at a young age. 

Lovebirds are very active and require an appropriately sized cage. They require lots of toys and things to chew on and play with.

Lovebirds are extremely social birds, and there is debate on whether they should be kept individually.

However, the consensus seems to be that they need social interaction, be it with their own species or a human companion, for their emotional as well as physical well-being.

Without this interaction, daily exercise, a roomy cage, and many toys to play with , they may resort to feather-plucking or other behavioral problems.

They love to take baths almost every day and may sun themselves after bathing in order to dry.

Potential Problems / Training and Behavioral Guidance:

Lovebirds are pretty easy to manage for most people. They are not as destructive and noisy as their larger cousins. If not properly socialized, however, they will discover their beaks as method of “disciplining us”.

It really is important to learn to understand them and to guide their behavior before an undesirable behavior has been established. There are few things to consider …

• Biting: If not properly socialized, however, they will discover their beaks as method of “disciplining us”. They can be very aggressive towards other animals (including birds), if they don’t know them or are jealous of the attention they are getting from their favorite human.
• Noise: Lovebirds are very vocal birds, making loud, high-pitched noises that can be a nuisance. They make noise all day, but especially at certain times of day.
• Chewing: As stated above, lovebirds are also very active, and love to chew things. When they are let out of their cage, it would be wise to watch them carefully, and protect any furniture, electrical wiring or anything else that they could possibly chew on. They are not big chewers – as their preferred medium is “paper.”
• Paper: They love to tear up paper — especially when they are in the “mating” spirit — which is all-year-round for birds kept indoors (not exposed to the seasons). I have learned not to keep important papers laying around – and even use it as a way to keep my lovebird busy.

Lovebirds can start breeding when they are as young as ten months of age and may continue until they are five to six years. They are very prolific and may produce several egg clutches within a single year. Due to this, they are usually readily available on the pet market.

During breeding season the behavior between partners will change: the male displays a more aggressive behavior, while the female begins preparing the nest.

There are specific nesting boxes for lovebird-size birds, but if not available a cockatiel nesting box will do just fine.

The female builds the nest and lays three to six eggs, which are incubated for about twenty-three days. The nestlings are cared for by the female until they leave the nest at about six weeks of age. The father then takes over the feeding of the young for another two weeks or so until they are weaned.

Lovebirds require a variety of food , such as high-quality pellets*, fruits, seeds, and vegetables. Birds cannot stay healthy on seeds alone .

Mine eats with me (from my plate – I do eat a healthy diet), as well has being served a good quality seed mix. I also buy an organic unfortified seed/nut mix for variety.

Better bird stores may also have high-quality bird mixes – similar to Dr. Harvey’s – so it’s a good idea to look around.

They also love millets and other healthy treats. Sprouts and fresh greens, such as spinach, are also extremely beneficial if not essential. * Please note: When feeding pellets to your pet, please be aware of the fact that overly feeding citrus fruits (including oranges) to your birds can lead to “ Iron Overload Disease. “

Lovebirds are small African parrots that are named after the affectionate, strong, monogamous pair bonds they form with their chosen mate. However, the general perception is that lovebirds bond for life; however, “divorces” can and do happen in cases of established incompatibility .

Nonetheless, bonded pairs spend extended periods throughout the day and night snuggled up together, preening and feeding each other.

Distribution / range.

Eight of the nine species come from Africa , the remaining one from Madagascar .

The most common species in the United States (and maybe worldwide) is the charming Peach-faced Lovebird – which have been bred in an array of beautiful color mutations. The striking-looking black-maskeds are also widely available.

Numerous feral populations exist in the United States (California, Arizona, Florida, etc.)

These small parrots (sometimes also referred to as “Pocket Parrot”) have the intelligence and abilities of many of the larger parrots. They can also get quite bossy with other pets and even family members.

Their voice apparatus allows a wide range of articulations, including the imitation of the human voice.  Although they are not known to be great talkers; and most never learn to talk at all.

If bonded to a human, they will make a very special pet indeed; ever loving as is true to its name. However, they do need a mate that spends significant time throughout the day with them – and in the absence of a bird mate – the bird owner has to fill this strong need for affection.

A pet lovebird that is given little attention is probably one of the saddest sights I can think of. On the other hand, poorly socialized or even abused lovebirds are typically very aggressive – and gaining their trust and love is very time consuming.

Not everybody is able to give this special bird the time commitment it needs.

They make lively and energetic pet birds . They are available in a variety of colors and are playful and often boisterous birds. They require an owner who is willing to provide the care and attention this animated bird adores. Birds that do not receive this attention become prone to behavioral problems, including feather picking.

Their lifespan is 10 to 15 years .

Description

They are small, stocky versions of parrots , with a short, blunt tail, and a large hooked upper beak.

Those found in the wild are typically green with a variety of colors on their upper body, depending on the species. Some species , like the Black-masked , Fischer’s , Black-cheeked , and the yellow-collared lovebirds, have a white ring around the eye, although many color mutations have been developed in captivity.

They measure about 5 – 7.5 inches (13 – 19 cm) in length; and average 1.5 to 2.5 oz ( 40 – 70 grams) in weight, which puts them among the smallest parrots in the world. The Peach-faced is the largest lovebird species, weighing in at from 50-60 grams. Even though Abyssinian may be slightly longer than Peach-faces, they tend to be quite slender, and Peach-faces are typically heavier.

Gender Identification: In most lovebird species, males and females look alike and the only sure method of identifying their gender may be DNA sexing (or surgical sexing).

Once they have reached maturity (when they are about one year old), there may be behavioral indicators, such as shredding paper and stuffing the paper strips into its feathers (mostly female behavior – although some males also do it) or regurgitating for its owners (male behavior as the male typically feeds the nesting female) … More on lovebird sexing.

Aggressive Behavior with Other Birds and Animals

As loving and affectionate as these birds tend to be with their chosen mate (whether it’s another bird or a human), as aggressive they can get with those they deem to be intruders or competitors for their mate’s affection.

Their dominant and territorial nature can be a big issue with other pets — such as birds in the household, but even cats, dogs will be ferociously attacked. Because of this, their interactions with other pets should be supervised.

Even though they have been kept without too many problems in large communal settings, in cages they will fiercelessly compete for the space and are known to bite off the toes of other birds. In general, they should not be kept with smaller birds or even the docile cockatiels .

To minimize risk of injury or even death, lovebirds should be housed only with their own species with plenty of room for all.

The best breeding results is typically achieved when kept in a colony system (for some of the rarer species, this may not apply – please read up on the respective species pages).

A group of five or six pairs requires an aviary a minimum of three meters long (~10 feet) and one meter (~3 – 4 feet) wide. They may also be bred successfully using the cabinet system, where cabinets no less than 80 x 50 x 50 cm are (30 x 20 x 20 inches) recommended.

Diet / Feeding

Their natural diet includes various fruits, vegetables, plant material, grasses and seed. Black-winged Lovebirds (also known as Abyssinians) also feed on insects and figs.

Lovebirds can be very… Lovebirds can be very aggressive. If the female is hormonal, she could kill the other lovebird she is caged with. keep them separated but in clear sight of each other. If your attacker, most likely the female, calms down put them back together but under your watchful eye. She may be ready to breed while the other is not, or you may have two of the same sex birds.

love birds are flock animals… love birds are flock animals so do better with their own kind as does any flock bird.. not many people have enough time to devote to this beauty. I had a lovebird, she was aggressive and couldn’t be kept with another bird. Just because they are the same species doesn’t mean they will get along, so I don’t recommend getting more than one unless you have a separate cage for the second bird. There is always a chance they won’t get along.

In other words, it is absolutely fine to have one lovebird. However, because birds in general are “flock” animals, you will need to spend a good amount of time with the bird. When you’re home it would be nice to allow it free time out of its cage and hanging on you or cuddling in your hair or clothes, and spending a bit of quality time with it while you’re prepping meals (just keep it away from dangers such as boiling water, hot stove tops, or ceiling fans) or just sitting watching tv. You DON’T need to spend the better part of your day with the bird, but setting aside special times each day will be very beneficial to your relationship and keeping a happy bird.

If you work most of the day and the bird will be relegated to its cage (as it should when unsupervised), be sure you have a very spacious cage, and consider getting a lovebird playmate. In this case, I would suggest getting BOTH BIRDS AT THE SAME TIME so that they can share a cage from the get-go. They can be quite territorial so introducing a new bird to one you already have is tricky sometimes.

If introducing a new bird, you should have two cages and allow for slow, supervised introduction. You might even put the current bird in a new cage and let the new bird have the first (and hopefully larger) cage for a few weeks, so that it can establish a bit of its own territory in the larger cage while keeping the two cages nearby each other. After you feel sure they are playing and enjoying each other’s company, only then should you try supervised cage sharing.

Today budgies – often called lovebirds in India – are the most popular pet birds in the world. All the adored cage birds of today are the descendants of parrots. They are one of the smallest of the world’s 330 parrot species which have come down from a plucky little bird in rural Australia.

Some appear to be about 30 cm long from tail tip to crown, with bulbous, fluffy foreheads, barrel chests and deep-set eyes. Their colours are striking: vivid shades of blue, grey and green as well as violet and white. Most startling of all are the yolk-yellow birds, called Latinas that are like splashes of luminous paint. The first colour mutations in captive birds were blue and yellow. Today, breeders raise birds with rainbow of colours.

Love birds stay near water when it’s dry, but when there’s a lot of rain they spread out. They are sometimes seen nestling on top of tall eucalyptus trees. While some of the caged varieties would have difficulty flying across a room, wild budgies travel hundreds of kilometres at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour to seek seed and water. Even in prolonged droughts, the budgie has an extraordinary ability to withstand dehydration. When deprived of water, budgies can reportedly exist with little weight loss for more than a month at an average air temperature of 30 degrees. At 20 degrees, some can apparently survive indefinitely without water, provided they are getting some moisture from food.

Male budgies can be excellent mimics and can develop huge vocabularies. Hens may whistle and can learn a few words, but they are not nearly as loquacious as males. Budgies are dimorphic upon sexual maturity. Adult males of most colours, except albino and the very pale pastels, develop a blue colour. Hens have a lilac or tan colour that turns brownish upon maturity.

When I experienced a great loss in in my early forties — almost a year to the day after another — I went to see my mother in the family home. She wasn’t a hugger or giver of advice, so instead we fed the birds. As she had when I was a child, she stood behind me in the kitchen with her shoulder propped against the back door, passing slices of apple and small balls of minced meat into my hand.

Each bird, apart from the snatching kookaburras, was touchingly gentle in the way it took food from my fingers. The white cockatoos ate daintily, one-legged. The lorikeets jumped onto the sloping ramp on both feet, like eager parachutists, to quarrel over the apple and press the juice from the pulp with stubby tongues.

Lined up on the veranda rail, the magpies cocked their heads to observe me before accepting meat precisely in their blue-white beaks. They had a beautiful, carolling song, with a chorded quality in the falling registers. But the bright-eyed butcher birds had the most lovely song of all: a full-throated piping, which I’ve heard compared to the Queen of the Night’s aria in Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Over decades, a family of these little blue-grey birds, had come to stack their hooked meat-eaters’ beaks with mince, which they flew to deliver to young somewhere in our neighbour’s garden, though we had never bothered to try to work out where they lived. This afternoon, when my mother and I opened the door, they landed by our side as they always had, having spotted us from their watching places. For a brief moment, surrounded by these vital creatures, I felt as if I might still want to be alive.

Small agents

Birds have always been small agents charged with carrying the burden of our feelings simply by following the logic of their own existence. The Irish imagined puffins as the souls of priests. The ancient Romans released an eagle when an emperor died in the belief it would “conduct his soul aloft”. In the Abrahamic religions, doves are given powers of revelation. We have even been inclined, right up until the present, to imagine birds as the souls of our recently departed returned to us, if only for a moment.

Even without being recruited into such labour, birds touch on our lives in small but significant ways. Once, in the botanical gardens of Melbourne, a boyfriend laughed until he almost cried at the mechanical, eager hopping of the tiny fairy wrens, a fact that only made me like him more. A friend tells the story of her uncle who ordered quail for the first time at a restaurant and cried when he saw it on his plate. “She had a raven’s heart, small and obdurate,” American author Don DeLillo writes of a nun in Underworld ; it is my favourite description in any novel.

In Japan, where my partner and I tried to ease our sadness, the calls of crows were ubiquitous in every town. Like the low sounds of its deer, they had a subdued, almost exhausted quality, as hollow as the bells that are rattled to call the oldest spirits to its Shinto temples.

In 1975, when his first wife left him, Masahise Fukase began to photograph these birds, which he had seen from the window of a train. He would keep taking their pictures – on a hilltop tori at dusk, grouped on the budding branches of a bare tree, in flying silhouette – for ten years. Ravens would become one of the most famous books of modern photography , hailed as a “masterpiece of mourning”. While some people see the birds in his photos as symbols of loneliness I see them as embodiments of pure intention. “I work and photograph to stop everything,” Fukase said. As if fulfilling a prophecy, he would spend the last two decades of his life in a coma, after falling down the stairs at his favourite bar.

Yet for all our emotional investment in them, we’ve never treated birds particularly well. To train a falcon in Qatar, owners sew the young bird’s eyes shut, unstitching and then restitching them for longer intervals, until it is entirely dependent on its keeper. In Asia the appetite for caged songbirds is so great that their calls are disappearing from its forests. Our careless acceptance that these extraordinary creatures are subject to our will is perhaps as damning as any direct mistreatment of them. This is symbolised for me by that fact that, in North America, owners of long pipelines add a putrid odorant to the natural gas they carry so that turkey vultures, circling over the deathly smell, will alert them to methane leaks.

We are currently draining marshes globally three times faster than we are clearing forests. Migratory Red Knots fly 15,000 kilometres per year between Australia and their breeding grounds in the Arctic Tundra, but they’re declining because of the industrial development of the Yellow Sea’s tidal mudflats, where they stop to feed and rest. One of the details that most haunted me in the reports of Australia’s mega-fires was the fact that many birds that survived the radiant heat would die of smoke inhalation because the continuous one-way airflow of their breathing systems and air sacs meant they couldn’t cough to clear their lungs.

When we first moved into my childhood home, wattlebirds fed in the grevilleas, calling from the rockery with voices that sounded, as a poet once said to me, like the cork being pulled from a bottle of champagne. While their long forms ending in a slim, curved beak seemed the embodiment of alertness, they were the birds our cat caught most often. To see one, rescued but internally injured, vomit up its honey and grow limp was one of my first intimations as a child of the world’s evils. Unable to bear the thought of their sleek, streaky bodies in the bare earth, my mother would bury them wrapped in tea towels. But it was the 70s and no one thought to keep the cat inside.

As my mother entered her nineties, her life contracted around her birds. Although experts were now advising that the lack of calcium could soften chicks’ bones, I continued, against my conscience, to put through her weekly grocery order, which contained as much bird mince as food for herself. She had stopped feeding the cockatoos, which had chewed her windowsills and the struts of the back door, but when they heard us in the kitchen they would still plaster their chests like great white flowers against the window or poke their heads through the large holes they’d made over the years in the door’s wire fly screen.

But it was only the butcher birds that ever entered through these gaps to wait for her by the sink, feathers fluffed calmly. Once or twice, one would come and find her in the dining room and quietly walk back ahead of her to be fed. When I came with the children, she would press food into their hands as she stood behind them at the door, leaning against the kitchen counter for support. So she continued to be one of the estimated 30 to 60% of Australian households that fed wild birds, a statistic that suggests that we need them far more than they need us.

Scientists began to think in the 19th century that birds might have evolved from dinosaurs, when the 150-million- year-old fossil skeleton of Archaeopteryx — which we now know was capable of short bursts of active flight — turned up in a German quarry.

The Victorian biologist Thomas Henry Huxley observed the bony-tailed, feathered fossil’s striking resemblance to small dinosaurs like Compsognathus and proposed that it was a transitional form between flightless reptiles and birds. Huxley’s theory fell out of favour until the last decades of the 20th century, when a new generation of palaeontologists returned to the similarities between the metabolisms and bird-like structures of dinosaur fossils and birds, and there is now a consensus that birds are avian dinosaurs. That the birds with which we share our lives are the descendants of the hollow-tailed, meat-eating theropods is a true wonder that never fails to thrill me.

Birds, like us, are survivors. They escaped the Cretaceous-Paleogene (or K-Pg) mass extinction event 65 million years ago: the fifth and last great dying in the history of our planet, until the Sixth Extinction taking place around us now.

Scientists were able to work out, from unusually high deposits of rare iridium (which mostly comes from outer space) in the Earth’s crust that a ten-kilometre-wide asteroid hitting the area that is now Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula had killed off three quarters of the world’s living creatures by causing forest fires and then a freezing “nuclear winter,” which inhibited photosynthesis and rapidly acidified the oceans. Its blast was thousands of times more powerful than the combined force of all the nuclear weapons in the world today. The dust and debris it dispersed into the atmosphere eventually settled into a thin grey band of iridium-rich clay, which came to be called the K-Pg boundary and, above it, no trace of a non-avian dinosaur can be found.

In historical ironies whose obviousness would shame a novelist, it was geophysicists looking for petroleum in the 1970s who would discover the existence of the Chicxulub crater. Walter Alvarez, who discovered the “iridium anomaly”, was the son of physicist Luis Alvarez, a designer of America’s nuclear bombs, with whom he posited the asteroid strike theory; Alvarez senior had followed in a plane behind the Enola Gay to measure the blast effect as it dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima.

The ground-dwelling, beaked avian dinosaurs were able to scratch out a life for themselves in the ferny “disaster flora” that replaced the obliterated forests; their intelligence, their feathery insulation, their ability to feed on the destroyed forests’ seeds, and to digest the “hard, persistent little morsels” as one writer puts it, would help them to survive, and later flourish.

More incredibly, these dinosaurs were already recognisably bird-like, inside and out; capable of at least short horizontal flight like quails, the parts of their brains that controlled sight, flight and high-level memory as expanded as those of modern birds’, while our early mammal ancestors — small, nocturnal, insectivorous, shrew-like mammals — were hiding in clefts and caves.

It is now thought that the world’s oldest modern bird, Asteriornis maastrichtensis , could probably fly and was combing the shallow beaches of today’s Belgium, in the way of modern long-legged shore birds, 700,000 years before the K-Pg mass extinction.

Because of a wealth of new fossil evidence in China, we now also know that feathers are far more ancient than we once thought; they didn’t evolve with birds 150 million years ago but are instead probably as old as dinosaurs themselves. In fact, many of the dinosaurs that we have been trained to think of as scaly, were at least partially feathered, including the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex , which may have used its primitive feathers, like a peacock, for display.

Powerful electron microscopes have allowed scientists to determine that the long filaments covering 150-million-year-old Sinosauropteryx , the first feathered non-avian dinosaur discovered, in China, in 1996, were “proto-feathers”; and even, looking at the melanosomes inside them, that they were ginger, running in a “Mohican” pattern down its back and ending in a stripey white-and-ginger tail. To try to help us understand the literal profundity of this moment in the history of the earth, writers have been looking increasingly below its surface, far beyond the human realm, to its deepest, billions-of-years-old strata.

In his astonishing Underland , English writer Robert Macfarlane travels physically far underground into caves, mines, and nuclear waste bunkers, to revive our ancient sense of awe as forces and substances once thought safely confined there begin to exert themselves above ground, but also to convey the enormity of the long shadow we will cast into the future of a planet that has already seen periods of great transformation.

In Timefulness , geologist Marcia Bjornerud argues that understanding the Earth through her discipline’s vastly expanded time-scales can help us avoid the almost unthinkably grave consequences of our actions. We live in an era of time denial, she writes, while navigating towards the future with conceptions of the long patterns of planetary history as primitive as a 14th-century world map. And yet, she writes, “as a daughter, mother, and widow, I struggle like everyone else to look Time honestly in the face.”

Yet here, I think, all around us on the surface of the planet, are our vivacious and inscrutable companions, feathered messengers from deep time, who still tell their own story of complex change.

What lives and dies

At a writer’s festival in northern New South Wales, I remember, a magpie lark landed between the chair and speaker on stage to let forth a cascade of liquid notes, “as if, to say,” a droll friend sitting next to me said, “I too have something to contribute!” while I found myself wondering, yet again, how something with such a small heart could be so alive.

To think about dinosaurs, as evolutionary biologist Steven Brusatte writes , is to confront the question of what lives and what dies. To think that dinosaurs were far more complex than we imagined, Klinkenberg muses, interrupts the chain of consequence we’ve been carrying in our heads, which assumes that deep time’s purpose was to lead to us as the end point of evolution. The history of feathers and wings, in which the power of flight appears to have been discovered and lost at least three times, shows that evolution is not a tree, but a clumped bush. And yet, Klinkenberg writes, “Because we come after, it’s easy to suppose we must be the purpose of what came before.”

The same could be said of mothers. When the time came to choose the photographs for my mother’s funeral, the images of her as a child in Mexico and Canada seemed as unreal as dispatches from the moon. The photographs of our mothers as young girls are so affecting a friend wrote to me, because they show them living lives that were whole without us. Now my own children turn their heads away from pictures of me as a girl, because, they say, “You don’t look like you.” And yet, if our minds struggle to encompass the deep time of our mothers, I think, how can they hope to stretch across aeons?

On my last visit to my mother, I left her on her front step throwing meat to the two magpies which had learned to come around from the backyard, away from the other birds, and would follow her on stilted legs around the garden. When she pressed her emergency pendant the next morning, I missed her call; it was my partner, hearing her faint answers, who called the ambulance. Unconscious in the hospital, she died having never known that she had left her home. When I stopped back at the house afterwards, one of the butcher birds, which I had never seen around the front, was on the windowsill of her dark bedroom, break pressed against the glass, looking for her.

Parrots are great birds and we should do our best to protect them and take care of them. 

Short Essay on My Favourite Bird Cuckoo in 400 Words 

I have seen hundreds of different types of birds and observed their unique quirks and I adore them all, but my favourite is the cuckoo. Cuckoos are black in colour and have long tails. They look like crows but are smaller than them. The sound that cuckoos make is very pleasant to listen to and they are quite famous for it as well. Their melodious call fills everyone with joy. Cuckoos live on trees and in bushes. They eat fruits, insects, and worms. They especially like eating caterpillars. 

Cuckoos are migratory birds and we often see them during the spring season. Hence, they are called the harbinger of spring. Cuckoos have a peculiar habit. They do not make nests and are infamous for laying eggs in the nests of other birds, usually crows. A female cuckoo can lay eggs in as many as 50 nests during the breeding season.

Cuckoos have evolved to lay eggs that mimic the eggs of crows. This prevents their eggs from being ejected from the nest. The crows mistake the eggs as their own and look after them. Cuckoo chicks hatch and grow up under the care of crows. 

In the village, we wake up every day listening to the chirping of different birds and during the spring season, it is beautiful ‘kuhu kuhu’ of the cuckoos that dominate. There are at least ten pairs of cuckoos that live in our orchard and we give them grains and fruits to feed on.

Although they are usually afraid of humans and don’t come too close, I once befriended a cuckoo. It had red eyes and used to come near the windowsill of my room every morning. I fed it grains that I got from my grandmother and also caught a few hairy caterpillars for it. One day, it brought along another cuckoo. Both of them looked quite similar. 

I had a great time interacting with the cuckoos in my village orchard and fell in love with them. When the vacation was over, we had to come back and I started missing the cuckoos. I read a lot of articles on these birds and filled my room with posters of these beautiful creatures. After a few months, when we went to visit my grandparents again, it was already winter and the cuckoos had migrated. I never saw my friend again but I still remember its amazing red eyes and melodious voice. Cuckoos have since been my favourite birds.

Dubai - Cozmo Travel opened two more outlets in prime locations in UAE — Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai.

The Ras Al Khaimah branch was inaugurated by Engineer Shaikh Salem bin Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, chairman of Department of Civil Aviation, RAK, and the Dubai branch was inaugurated by Adel Abdullah Ali, CEO, Air Arabia Group.

Announcing this in a Press release, Jamal Abdul Nazar, CEO, Cozmo Travel, said that with the multiplication of branches, it is a feather on our cap. The RAK branch, which has been in operation since 2011, has been refurbished and moved to a larger office location with Air Arabia’s city check-in to enrich customer experience and meet the growing market demand. The branch at Al Ghurair Mall — Dubai is the 22nd branch in the UAE and the 60th branch across the GCC, which is inclusive of the dedicated Air Arabia sales counters/outlets.

“With the opening of the new branches we are once again re-establishing our corporate policy of reaching out to our customers. We strongly believe in the convenience of our customers and this is yet another step towards that. Both the new branches are conveniently located and provide easy access to our customers. The RAK branch is centrally located in Al Rams Road, behind Lulu Centre, Al Nakheel is well equipped to meet the local market requirement,” he added.

I have always been in awe of the many beautiful bird species that soar above us. It is so wonderful to see birds flying over the sky in the sunlight. Everybody wants to live a life free of all limitations . At some point or another, we all desire to live peacefully and away from materialistic things. We are required to behave in accordance with social norms and uphold a social life because we are humans. While we are required to abide by certain social rules, birds are free. The best example of a creature that understands freedom is a bird. Because of this, the dove is a symbol of liberation. If I were a bird, I would enjoy soaring high until sunset so I could watch the sun sink into the water. I would adore jumping into the ocean, touching the water, and catching fish in rivers.

When I think about how amazing it is for birds to be able to fly so high into the sky, I sometimes think about how they must feel like as living entities, in this world. It would strike any human thinker, and it also strikes me that birds have a talent for communicating with one another and the capacity to comprehend weather changes. I do often consider what my actions and feelings would be if I were a bird. I occasionally ponder which bird I would like to be in the realms of fantasy.

One day, if I were a bird with two powerful wings, I could fly to the highest of the skies and see many strange things that I can't even begin to imagine right now. I would have travelled to a foreign country and migrated there for a few months along with other species of birds that are uncommon in my home country, just as an aeroplane flies to far-off places and migratory birds cross oceans and mountains every year to reach far-off lands to temporarily settle there. I can’t imagine how it would feel like—to have so much liberty that you can fly anywhere you want without having to think much. I have no doubt that I would have found that to be an odd but wonderful experience.

Birds are incredibly distinctive creatures with defining characteristics that they all share. They share features like two legs, wings, and feathers . Furthermore, all birds lay eggs and have warm blood. They are extremely significant to our environment and come in many different breeds.

Importance of Birds

Depending on the species, birds can range in size from 2 inches to 2.75 metres—take the smallest, the bee hummingbird, and the largest, the ostrich. Birds first appeared 160 million years ago . Birds come in many different varieties, each with its own special qualities. Penguins, for example, are unable to fly. Also, there are intelligent birds such as parrots and corvids .

We also have peacocks, which are elegant and represent rain and pleasant weather. Then there are the vultures and bats. Birds are highly intuitive and highly connected to their environment.

They can forecast weather, and some of them are kept close to coal mines to help prevent mine explosions. They enjoy singing and are very sociable. Birds like to fly around freely and without restrictions.

My Favourite Bird

The parrot is one of my favourite birds . It is a vibrant bird that can be found all over the world. It has a wide range of colours, sizes, and shapes. Vibrant colours make parrots a popular pet.

While some have a single, vivid colour, others have a rainbow of hues. The majority of what parrots eat are seeds, nuts, and fruits, and they are typically small to medium in size. The species of parrot determines how long they live.

While smaller birds like love birds only live for about 15 years, larger birds like cockatoos and macaws live for 80 years . Parrots are actually quite intelligent. Because of their capacity to mimic human speech, they are frequently kept as pets. As a result, they are the most sought-after species of bird for commercial use. People are making efforts to ensure that parrots receive good care all over the world. They are regarded as sacred in many cultures.

Because parrots are highly intelligent, it's best to let them live in the wild without being caged. My parrot, Shiro, was never caged when I was younger. It used to follow me everywhere I went and never flew off. I have fond memories with him.There is no other type of bird that I like more than a parrot.

Saving Birds

The ecological balance is being disrupted by hunting, poaching, and habitat destruction, which are causing many species of birds to go extinct. As a result of pollution and the advancement of science and technology, the number of aquatic birds like swans, ducks, and others is also drastically decreasing. Therefore, it is up to us all to take the necessary steps to help the birds survive and prevent their extinction. In addition, the government should also be aware of these and pass certain rules and regulations to protect birds from extinction. We all need to protect birds because they are essential to the health and balance of our ecosystem.

When I Became a Birder, Almost Everything Else Fell Into Place

Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, Calif., walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. Throughout the summer, I was breaking in my first pair of binoculars, a Sibley field guide and the Merlin song-identification app, but always while hiking or walking the dog. On that pier, for the first time, I had gone somewhere solely to watch birds.

In some birding circles, people say that anyone who looks at birds is a birder — a kind, inclusive sentiment that overlooks the forces that create and shape subcultures. Anyone can dance, but not everyone would identify as a dancer, because the term suggests, if not skill, then at least effort and intent. Similarly, I’ve cared about birds and other animals for my entire life, and I’ve written about them throughout my two decades as a science writer, but I mark the moment when I specifically chose to devote time and energy to them as the moment I became a birder.

Since then, my birder derangement syndrome has progressed at an alarming pace. Seven months ago, I was still seeing very common birds for the first time. Since then, I’ve seen 452 species, including 337 in the United States, and 307 this year alone. I can reliably identify a few dozen species by ear. I can tell apart greater and lesser yellowlegs, house and purple finches, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks. (Don’t talk to me about gulls; I’m working on the gulls.) I keep abreast of eBird’s rare bird alerts and have spent many days — some glorious, others frustrating — looking for said rare birds. I know what it means to dip, to twitch, to pish . I’ve gone owling.

I didn’t start from scratch. A career spent writing about nature gave me enough avian biology and taxonomy to roughly know the habitats and silhouettes of the major groups. Journalism taught me how to familiarize myself with unfamiliar territory very quickly. I crowdsourced tips on the social media platform Bluesky . I went out with experienced birders to learn how they move through a landscape and what cues they attend to.

I studied up on birds that are famously difficult to identify so that when I first saw them in the field, I had an inkling of what they were without having to check a field guide. I used the many tools now available to novices: EBird shows where other birders go and reveals how different species navigate space and time; Merlin is best known as an identification app but is secretly an incredible encyclopedia; Birding Quiz lets you practice identifying species based on fleeting glances at bad angles.

This all sounds rather extra, and birding is often defined by its excesses. At its worst, it becomes an empty process of collection that turns living things into abstract numbers on meaningless lists. But even that style of birding is harder without knowledge. To find the birds, you have to know them. And in the process of knowing them, much else falls into place.

Birding has tripled the time I spend outdoors. It has pushed me to explore Oakland in ways I never would have: Amazing hot spots lurk within industrial areas, sewage treatment plants and random residential parks. It has proved more meditative than meditation. While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus resolutely on the present, and the usual hubbub in my head becomes quiet. When I spot a species for the first time — a lifer — I course with adrenaline while being utterly serene.

I also feel a much deeper connection to the natural world, which I have long written about but always remained slightly distant from. I knew that the loggerhead shrike — a small but ferocious songbird — impales the bodies of its prey on spikes. I’ve now seen one doing that with my own eyes. I know where to find the shrikes and what they sound like. Countless fragments of unrooted trivia that rattled around my brain are now grounded in place, time and experience.

When I step out my door in the morning, I take an aural census of the neighborhood, tuning in to the chatter of creatures that were always there and that I might have previously overlooked. The passing of the seasons feels more granular, marked by the arrival and disappearance of particular species instead of much slower changes in day length, temperature and greenery. I find myself noticing small shifts in the weather and small differences in habitat. I think about the tides.

So much more of the natural world feels close and accessible now. When I started birding, I remember thinking that I’d never see most of the species in my field guide. Sure, backyard birds like robins and western bluebirds would be easy, but not black skimmers or peregrine falcons or loggerhead shrikes. I had internalized the idea of nature as distant and remote — the province of nature documentaries and far-flung vacations. But in the past six months, I’ve seen soaring golden eagles, heard duetting great horned owls, watched dancing sandhill cranes and marveled at diving Pacific loons, all within an hour of my house. “I’ll never see that” has turned into “Where can I find that?”

Of course, having the time to bird is an immense privilege. As a freelancer, I have total control over my hours and my ability to get out in the field. “Are you a retiree?” a fellow birder recently asked me. “You’re birding like a retiree.” I laughed, but the comment spoke to the idea that things like birding are what you do when you’re not working, not being productive.

I reject that. These recent years have taught me that I’m less when I’m not actively looking after myself, that I have value to my world and my community beyond ceaseless production and that pursuits like birding that foster joy, wonder and connection to place are not sidebars to a fulfilled life but their essence.

It’s easy to think of birding as an escape from reality. Instead, I see it as immersion in the true reality. I don’t need to know who the main characters are on social media and what everyone is saying about them, when I can instead spend an hour trying to find a rare sparrow. It’s very clear to me which of those two activities is the more ridiculous. It’s not the one with the sparrow.

More of those sparrows are imminent. I’m about to witness my first spring migration as warblers and other delights pass through the Bay Area. Birds I’ve seen only in drab grays are about to don their spectacular breeding plumages. Familiar species are about to burst out in new tunes that I’ll have to learn. I have my first lazuli bunting to see, my first blue grosbeak to find, my first least terns to photograph. I can’t wait.
