Teacher Speech

The role of a teacher in the life of a student is significant and by and large the most important. The excellence of a teacher decides the academic and other mile stones achieved by his/her students. We all are like a bundle of infinite potential, but, to unlock that potential and to realize our own abilities, we, up to large extent, depend on our teacher. A teacher recognizes our individual talents and treats us accordingly so that to bring out the best in us.

She/he is the person who makes us realize our own blessings and guides us until we have full explored them. A teacher, like our parents, always stays by our side, either in joy or in sorrow. By encouraging the youth and making them educated, a teacher does excellent service to the society and to the nation.

Long and Short Speech on Teacher in English

Below we are giving long and short speech on teachers.

These Teacher Speech are written in simple English to make them easily memorable and presentable when required.

While delivering the speech you will tell the audiences about the significance and qualities of a teacher, leaving the audience mesmerized in the end.

These long and short speeches will be extremely useful for you on the occasions like Teachers Day or other similar events.

Short Speech on Teacher – 1

Good Morning everyone! As we all know that today is Teachers Day, so I am being asked by my classmates to give a speech on “teacher”.

A teacher, my dear friends, going by the meaning, is someone who teaches. But, this is only the most basic definition of a teacher. If I have started stating the ways in which a teacher contributes to the society, I will most probably run short of words.

A teacher is the craftsman who helps building the foundation of a nation by teaching its wards. Without a teacher there would be no students, but only boisterous citizens with no clue on where they are headed.

Happy Teachers Day to all and don’t forget to cheer your beloved teachers today by pampering them with praises and gifts.

Short Speech on Teacher – 2

Very well Good Morning to all of you present here today, especially the teachers. As we all know that today is Teachers Day and I am requested by some of the friends of mine to give a speech on teachers.

From kindergarten to graduation, every step that we took was accompanied by a teacher whose sole interest was in our own growth and welfare. I think teaching is one of those rare professions, which someone chooses out of passion, rather than necessity.

There are so many teachers, a few of them I personally know, who could have easily chosen a lucrative profession; nevertheless, they chose to go with their inner voice. That is, they chose to enlighten the minds and transform lives. Could there be a social work more elegant than transforming noisy, stubborn and rambunctious kids into disciplined, concerned and progressive adults.

While most of us strive for materialistic accomplishments – decent package, house, car etc; a teacher wishes for something more sensible, that is, to transform his/her students into productive and sensible citizens.

There is nothing by which the society or the nation could ever repay the services of a teacher. S/he is the very foundation of a society.

Having said that, I would like to request you all to celebrate the day with your beloved, respected teachers, with as much fun and joy as you can. It is a day when you make them happy and cheer them up for the noble task they have chosen.

Wishing you all Happy Teacher’s Day! Once Again!

Long Speech on Teacher – 3

Respected Principal, Respected teachers and my dear fellow Students,

It feels great to welcome you all to this auspicious occasion; since we have gathered here to celebrate one of the most admirable occasions i.e. Teacher’s Day, it’s an opportunity for me to share few words about teachers, their role in schools and colleges and their influence on the students.

Teachers are the backbone of our society because they majorly contribute in shaping the future of a nation, i.e. students and guide them in becoming an ideal citizen of the country. Teacher’s job is full of responsibility and challenges because not every student is same and thus the teacher has to be dynamic and adopt different teaching patterns for different students. Teaching is a social practice and more than knowledge, a teacher must be a good human being who can very well shoulder the responsibility of his/her job and understand the sensitivity of the situation where students from different backgrounds have come together for learning and thus apply skills and knowledge to the best of his/her capacity while teaching.

Some of the qualities which every teacher must possess in order to become most acceptable are:

  • Enthusiasm – It is a known fact that teachers who show enthusiasm while teaching create a positive atmosphere and learning environment which help students in gaining knowledge fast and with fun. These teachers don’t follow the uniform pattern instead, they innovate teaching methods to keep the students engaged and enthusiastic.

The most important role a teacher plays is in motivating the students; some of the students find their teacher to be a role model and try to imitate them. Thus it is very important that the teacher leaves a positive impression on each student.

  • Interaction with learners – It is very important for the teacher to indulge into transparent and open discussion with the students in order to understand the capability of the learner. Some students are shy, while other may be afraid of failure. A teacher is highly trusted to build up the student emotionally and practically.

Conventionally, teaching is considered equivalent to praying. In olden days, parents used to leave their children in gurukul (a kind of residential school where students live with the teacher for studies). This tradition was greatly supported by the trust and bond between the parents and teachers. Even today, trust is one of the most important factors which motivate parents to get their children admitted in a particular school. A teacher is considered to be the alternate parents; this makes teaching all the more challenging and full of accountability.

In recent days, we get to hear a lot about corporal punishment. Some of the teachers get barbaric and beat students so badly that some of them don’t even survive. This is highly restricted in all over India. Though it is important for the teachers to be strict sometimes but there can be alternate methods to punish the students than harming them physically.

Well, I would like to end this note with a huge thanks to our teachers who are so caring and compassionate. We are highly honoured to be a part of this School.

Long Speech on Teacher – 4

Good evening everybody!

I welcome you all to this grand occasion. In our lifetime each of us has some or other teachers whom we consider as our idol.

Alright, so today I would like to talk to you about the one who lays the foundation of the existence of any school – ‘The Teacher’. Teacher is that one entity who strengthens the educational power of the students. They are the ones who link the students to the school and vice versa.

While I was young, I always used to associate my subject by the name of the teacher who used to teach that and also more the favourite teacher, more the marks in that subject… Yes, it’s a fact. Isn’t it, kids?

It is a proven fact that a teacher’s job is not just a job but it has an impact on the growth and well-being of the entire nation. Teachers play the most essential role in delivering what is desired. They are considered as the backbone of the society because they continuously contribute in building up the student’s characters, shaping their future and also help them to become ideal citizens of the country. A good teacher always inspires the hope, ignites the imagination, and instils the love of learning within us.

It isn’t true that the teacher works only when they have a class to address, before coming to the class they have a long handed homework to be done, yes… believe me, they do have! They need to be prepared for the topic to be taught, they have to get the tests prepared, the exercises ready and all that To-Do list prepared before they actually come on desk to perform their role. It is the responsibility of the teachers to continue doing their hard work and go through a variety of material that enriches their knowledge for the betterment of the society.

Teachers give us the moral support and encourage us to live a quality life in the society. They have the power to let the students understand the aspects of career growth, and future prospects in their desired fields.

Teachers help a student to shape their character and make their future bright. They enable us to stand strong in this world by building us from within, by making us sensible and knowledgeable so that we become capable of dealing with numerous challenges coming our way and helping us succeed.

As a conclusion, I would ask you all to always cherish the bond with your teachers. They are the ones who have educated you and have put in the efforts to bring you up in this society. We owe our respect and gratitude towards our teachers, they have empowered us with education, they have nurtured us with their love and affection just like our parents. Our respect makes them feel contended; they build the new blood to be a worthy soul in this nation.

Teachers have always been special and will continue to do so in all times to come.

Speech on Teacher – 5

Our most respected teachers, dear friends and students,

How may we express our heartfelt gratitude to our teachers? Friend, philosopher and guide all rolled into one. Yes, every teacher of ours has been just that.

Our teachers have facilitated our scholastic abilities and aptitudes. They have helped us cross the thresholds to possess the academic prerequisites to clear exams and qualify at different levels in our academic pursuits. They have been patient with us even as they got us grounded in the fundamentals of every subject. They have taught us with love. And that has often lightened even subjects that we found very tough.

But then our teachers have done much, much more than that. And we have learned from our teachers in so many different ways. Our teachers have guided us when we have faced difficult situations and dilemmas. When we have been low, and down and dejected they have been successful in raising our spirits and putting us right back on track. They have loved us even when we played truant and were mischievous and played pranks. They have offered us support in so many ways that made the process of education enjoyable. They have striven hard to inculcate in us human values and right ethics so that we may have a future guided by goodness and righteousness. They have helped us seek the truth and live by it at all times. They have given their time most generously, and offered advice most willingly. Isn’t it?

And naturally our teachers have been our role models. We have always looked up to our teachers with respect, awe and love. And we have always wondered if we could ever match up to them. Right?

Really speaking, it may never be possible for us to say all that our teachers have done for us and made possible for us so that we may work hard, excel and have a bright and happy future.

As we come together to thank our teachers, we find words are insufficient to do that. Words seem to pale before our teachers’ selfless service and devotion to the cause of educating, enlightening and moulding our minds, hearts and lives in totality. Words can never equal what our teachers have done for us with no expectation whatsoever.

Nevertheless, we have to resort to saying verbally a thank you to our teachers which is, of course, backed by our most sincere gratitude and deep love and appreciation.

Dear teachers, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to you all. You mean so much to us. What you have given us will help us go into the world for building our future.

All the beautiful flowers that could go into making a fragrant and extravagant bouquet would whither after a time, but dear teachers, our love and respect and regard for you for all that you have done to bolster and buttress our strength, and courage shall remain fresh always, in fact, will only grow and grow.

Speech on Teacher – 6

Dear friends, respected teachers and Principal Ma’am,

It is indeed so wonderful to be here on the occasion to mark Teacher’s Day.

As we look back there is a sense of nostalgia, of course, as we reminisce the academic institutions we attended as we went from school to college and then to university and other institutions of higher learning.

But at the root of it all is the great sense of gratitude we feel for our teachers at every level of our study and learning.

What would life have been but for our teachers? They, who taught us the alphabets and then through all the years of our study till we submitted, perhaps, our post-doctoral research work.

Education is so inter-linked with teachers. And when we glorify education as the means of enlightenment, emancipation and empowerment of people, men and women, we must really realize that the possibility becomes a realization through the patience, love, service and devotion of millions of teachers.

Go back in time and the person you most fondly remember will be the teacher who taught you, perhaps at kindergarten. That was the time when you, as a little child, left the comfort of your home and parents and went into a completely new environment and started to study and play with other children. And that kindergarten teacher was the person who was loving and caring, making the initiation to learning less painful, more comfortable.

As you grew up your teachers also became your mentors, advisers, supporters, counselors, sympathizers and role models. And your teachers were persons who made you independent thinkers, adventurous learners and inquisitive researchers. And they fostered you at every step. Even when our teachers seemed harsh or tough with us it was to make us strong and capable to deal with the reality most ably and most aptly that awaited us in the world. We realized that later. And we were only overwhelmed with gratitude.

These memories flood our minds and hearts as we remember our dear teachers. Yes, indeed!

Years may roll on and time flies, yet our teachers have a very special place in our hearts. That it seems is the power of sharing. When teachers teach us it is really that they share so much of their time, learning and life skills with us. Teachers are indeed so generous, and that is what transforms the lives of students year after year.

When we come together on occasions such as today to celebrate the lives and work of teachers, let us determine to share, in our own way, something that we may be endowed with, with those who may lack it. When we can do something akin to what our teachers did for us, it would only make our teachers happy and proud of us. It may be one way of saying a big thank you to our teachers.

Nothing can equal what our teachers have done for us. But we can try in whatever small way we can.

Speech On Teachers Day : 3

Respected Teachers and my dear friends,

We have all gathered here to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Teachers day. On behalf of me and all my fellow students, I would wholeheartedly like to thank our teachers for everything that they have done for us. I have prepared a few words in honor of our teachers.

As we all know that Teachers day is celebrated on the occasion of Dr. Radhakrishnans birthday on the 5th of September. Dr. Radhakrishnan was the second president after independence who was also a teacher and educationist. His excellent guidance helped pave the future path for many of the brightest minds of our country. India has been celebrating Teacher Day since 1962 in his honor who has been an inspirational figure to all.

Our teachers are one of the most irreplaceable parts of our lives. No student can succeed without the efforts and blessings of their teacher. From teaching us lessons from textbooks to life lessons, our teachers have helped us love learning and believe in ourselves and we cannot thank them enough. Can we imagine how life would have been without our teachers? We got a taste of this during the pandemic when we lost our school days and we dearly missed our interactions. From classroom fights to the scolding of our teachers, we missed it all. This however did not slow our teachers down and they jumped back to help us with online classes. With the tremendous efforts and sacrifices our teachers have made for us, we would like to thank you all for being there for us.

We promise to hold up the lessons and values you taught us and hope to make you proud someday!

The Man Behind It

In India, 5 th September is chosen as Teacher’s Day because it was the birthday of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. He was a renowned academic of our country who was also the first Vice President and the second President of Independent India.

Before he stepped foot into politics, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan used to represent the University of Calcutta in numerous international forums in the United Kingdom.

After he became the president, his students wanted to celebrate his birthday instead he asked them to mark it as a day to celebrate teachers. Thus, due to this and his contribution to academics, his birth anniversary became Teacher’s Day for Indians.

Further, it is also teachers who motivate us to do better in life. Thus, it recognizes their efforts to produce excellent artists, doctors, musicians, dancers, engineers and more.

It also encourages the students to respect and honor the teachers because they play a major role in making the students what they are. Teachers Day is great for making them feel appreciated and loved as it does not happen every day due to the busy schedule.

Furthermore, this day gives them a much-needed break from the busy schedule. As the teachers are always under stress to complete the syllabus on time, it helps them relax and enjoy a day meant to celebrate their greatness and contributions.

Every day is a blessing because of my dear teachers. Their selflessness and love help me grow and learn new things. Each day our teachers show up for us despite various hardships that they do not discuss, thus, it is our turn now to show them we are here for them.

It is because of you dear teachers that we are able to have the skills that we do today. Your experiences have helped us become wiser for the better. No token of appreciation can ever be enough to thank you for what you all have done for us. Good morning everyone. Teachers and friends, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude for everything you’ve done for us and it gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to speak in front of you all on this special occasion of Teachers Day.

Our teachers, as we all know, play a vital and significant part in our lives. They assist us in improving our knowledge, skill level, and confidence, as well as shaping us into the best possible shape for success. As a result, we, too, have a certain responsibility to our devoted teachers.

As responsible students, we must all extend a warm welcome and express our heartfelt gratitude for their selfless contribution of teaching throughout their lives and in molding the lives of many children.

I’d like to express my gratitude to all of the teachers for their selfless devotion and wholehearted support. We owe you respect and gratitude.

2. Speech 2

Good morning to all teachers and my dear friends. First and foremost, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of the teachers who have helped us become who we are today.

Teachers make a significant contribution to the success of students and the development of moral citizens. Any country’s success is determined by its citizens’ education, to which the teacher makes a crucial contribution.

Teachers never discriminate against students, but rather help them achieve their goals by providing them with equitable access to information. The teacher, who teaches us how to exist in the world by facing problems, is the second life after the parents.

To conclude my remarks, I’d like to remind everyone of Brad Henry’s words . –

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”

In India, Teachers’ Day or Shikshak Divas is celebrated annually on September 5 to mark the birthday of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, who was the first Vice President of India. As we all know, teachers/gurus play a vital role in the life of every individual. They are the ones who inspire us to do great things, and to succeed in life. So it is to celebrate their hard work that September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.

Even though it is celebrated on September 5 in India, in many other nations, it is celebrated annually on October 5. Every year, the theme of World Teachers’ Day gets changed. In 2021, “Teachers at the heart of education recovery” was the theme. A joint statement from UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF, and Educational International said, “On World Teachers’ Day, we are not only celebrating every teacher. We are calling on countries to invest in them and prioritise them in global education recovery efforts so that every learner has access to a qualified and supported teacher. Let’s stand with our teachers!”

Sample Speeches on Teachers’ Day

A few samples of speeches on Teachers’ Day are given below. Go through these speeches and utilise them to expand your knowledge.

The world celebrates Teachers’ Day on the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organisation (ILO)/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers all around the world. It has set the benchmark regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers.

When Dr. S. Radhakrishnan became the second President of India in 1962, many of his previous students approached him to seek permission to celebrate his birthday, September 5, as a special day. He, instead of granting permission to celebrate his birthday, he requested them to celebrate September 5 as Teachers’ Day, and to recognise the contributions made by teachers to society.

Teachers are one of the top influencers of our lives. Every human being will have a story to tell about the impact made by teachers on their lives. Teachers take every effort possible to enrich the lives of their students, and they bring great changes to our society. What would be the condition of a generation if there are no teachers to inspire them?

According to Solomon Ortiz, “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students”. With time and effort, a teacher lights the way for their students. It will be a mistake if we fail to notice their devotion and hard work. So let’s celebrate Teachers’ Day and try our best to widen their smiles.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruttani, Andhra Pradesh, on September 5, 1888. He was an academic, prominent philosopher and statesman, and was one of the most recognised Indian thinkers. Radhakrishnan’s broad knowledge of western philosophy and literary traditions made him attain a huge reputation, and it was through his teachings that many western philosophies were introduced to Indian society. He was an outstanding student during his school and college years, and later became a great teacher. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was a person who dedicated his life to educating others.

In 1921, he was appointed as the professor of Philosophy to the King George Ⅴ Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta. For 12 years, he worked in the university, and during that period, he represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire, as well as at the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University. Then, later in 1936, he was appointed by H.N. Spalding as a Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford. H.N. Spalding was highly impressed by his lectures and thus specifically made a position for him in the university. Students of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan highly admired and respected him. Once, his students arranged a flower-decked carriage to take him to the Mysore railway station from the Mysore University. It was in the year 1921, and the carriage was pulled by the students themselves.

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan has taught in multiple colleges all over India, and teaching for him was a divine profession. According to him, “True teachers are those who help us think for ourselves”. Later in 1948, he became the chairman of the University Education Commission. Radhakrishnan was elected as the first Vice-President of India in 1952, and elected as the second President of India (1962–1967). He was granted several awards during his lifetime. It includes a Knighthood in 1931, the highest civilian award – the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and the honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. Dr. Radhakrishnan was nominated 16 times for the Nobel Prize in Literature and another 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He died on April 16, 1975, in Chennai.

Exposure to loud noises can damage your hearing. Noise-induced hearing loss may not be noticeable at first, but it can get worse over time, particularly as you get older. Speech and music may begin to sound muffled or unclear, making it difficult for you to interpret sounds.

You can protect your hearing — and your children’s hearing — from noise damage with these three steps:

  • Lower the volume.
  • Move away from the noise.
  • Wear hearing protectors, such as earplugs or protective earmuffs.

Promoting and modeling healthy hearing habits can help children and teens protect their hearing for life. Gov. Greg Abbott Wants to ‘End’ Trans Teachers Expressing Their Gender in Texas

By Peter Wade

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott suggested that he wants to end transgender and gender nonconforming individuals from expressing their gender while teaching in the state.

At a speech delivered Friday at the Young Conservatives of Texas convention, Abbott described a report of a high school teacher who wore feminine clothing rather than clothing that matched their gender assigned at birth. Abbott said this teacher “was a man who would go to school dressed as a woman in a dress, high heels, and makeup” and declared that he wants to “end” that “type of behavior” in the state.

Texas Observer reporter Steven Monacelli was at the speech and captured Abbott’s remarks on audio:

Did USC set ‘very bad precedent’ by canceling valedictorian speech over safety threats?

Five months ago, USC cited safety as a rationale for banning economics professor John Strauss, who is Jewish, from campus after student activists said they felt threatened when he approached them at a protest and said “Hamas are murderers. ... I hope they all are killed.”

“Our north star is protecting the safety of our community,” a USC spokesperson said at the time.

Now the university is again citing safety concerns for canceling a Muslim valedictorian’s speech at its May commencement ceremony.

More than six months after the Hamas attack on Israel that started a war, campus administrators nationwide are struggling to uphold principles of free expression amid mounting pressure from donors, legislators and activists who claim an ever-expanding amount of speech — or potential speech — subjects students not only to physical danger but also to psychological harm.

A person holds a Palestinian flag during a student protest.

Free speech advocates note that the decision regarding Asna Tabassum, a USC senior who is graduating with a major in biomedical engineering, was not caused by anything she said or planned to say. Instead, the university said, online discussion had taken on an “alarming tenor” as activists objected to her minor — resistance to genocide — and a link to a pro-Palestinian website Tabassum had shared on her Instagram profile .

“This sets a very bad precedent,” said Alex Morey, director of campus rights advocacy with the nonprofit civil rights group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. “Moving forward, are they going to cancel every speech that could have anything to do with Israel-Palestine because they’re worried about ‘safety concerns’?”

Free speech experts fear that USC, in canceling its valedictorian’s speech, is paving the way for a censorious commencement season, offering others a playbook on how to silence potentially controversial speakers in the weeks to come.

“A university, except in the most exceptional cases, should not be giving in to threats of violence in order to suppress speakers,” said Keith Whittington, a political scientist at Princeton University and author of “Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech.”

“It’s a corruption and compromise of the university’s very basic commitments.”

The use of safety concerns to shut down campus speech did not start after Oct. 7. But, Morey said, universities have increasingly canceled events as they have seen an uptick in protests of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.

Last month, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas halted a public lecture from a visiting Israeli professor 15 minutes after he started speaking when pro-Palestinian protesters burst into the room.

Asaf Pe’er, an expert on theoretical high-energy astrophysics, was not speaking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His lecture was on black holes.

Rather than stop the disruption, citing the protesters’ 1st Amendment rights, UNLV police escorted Pe’er off campus “to ensure his safety.”

Other cancellations in the name of safety have taken place across the country, from Indiana University shutting down an art exhibit by Palestinian artist Samia Halaby to the University of Vermont canceling an in-person appearance by a pro-Palestinian poet .

Experts who track campus speech say university leaders have predominantly targeted speakers expressing support for the Palestinian cause.

“It’s definitely the pro-Palestinian speech that we are seeing very broadly being subjected to institutional punishments,” Morey said. “That’s not to say that there aren’t cases where pro-Israel or Zionist speakers are being punished.”

Part of the reason pro-Palestinian activists are targeted in greater numbers is that more students have embraced the Palestinian cause in recent years.

Some protests have crossed the line into unprotected expression, Morey said. But there is also growing pressure on university officials from donors and legislators worried about antisemitism to crack down on pro-Palestinian speech.

Students hold a sign reading "Free Palestine."

“It’s a pressure cooker for administrators,” Morey said. “In these cases, we want to make sure that their lodestar are student and faculty rights, rather than who is exerting the most pressure.”

When USC announced that Tabassum would be the valedictorian, two groups — Trojans for Israel, a campus student group, and EndJewHatred, a national movement dedicated to fighting antisemitism — spoke publicly against her.

In an Instagram post , Trojans for Israel said Tabassum “propagates antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric,” but did not cite anything she had written or said publicly. Instead, the post points to a link she had shared on her social media page that leads to a website describing Zionism as a “racist settler-colonial ideology.”

In an interview with The Times , Tabassum said she had not spoken to administrators about her speech, in which she said she had planned to convey hope and emphasize that “we must continue to use our education as a privilege to inform ourselves and ultimately make a change in the world.”

A portrait of Asna Tabassum.

“The university has betrayed me,” she said.

USC administrators contested the idea that Tabassum’s inability to speak is a free speech issue.

“There is no free-speech entitlement to speak at a commencement,” Provost Andrew T. Guzman said in a campuswide letter . “The issue here is how best to maintain campus security and safety, period.”

The 1st Amendment guarantees only that the government refrains from abridging freedom of speech. But experts on campus discourse asserted that as an institution of higher learning, USC has a responsibility to defend freedom of ideas.

USC communications professor Christina Dunbar-Hester, chapter president of the USC American Assn. of University Professors, said in a statement that it was disingenuous to frame Tabassum’s speech as a security issue without specifying a threat.

Guzman, she noted, did not offer any details, saying only that the discussion had “escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement.”

And that, Dunbar-Hester said, raises the question of whether USC faced a specific credible threat or was just trying to find a way to get around controversy.

A student in a yarmulke holds an Israeli flag.

“Here, we have capitulated to a ‘heckler’s veto’ before the fact,” she said. “Why is the burden of a potential threat placed on the shoulders of the valedictorian rather than those who would disrupt her?”

Dunbar-Hester said USC’s action — coming days before conservative legislators in Washington grilled the president of Columbia University — plays into the hands of “anti-intellectual reactionaries” who cynically sought to “demonize campus communities that express solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle.”

Howard Rodman, a professor of the writing division at the USC School of Cinematic Art and former president of the USC-AAUP chapter, said administrators decided to cancel Tabassum’s speech without buy-in from the faculty.

A professor holds a sign reading "Let Her Speak!"

“I have spoken to many people who feel that this is a disastrous decision, and no one who feels that it was a correct decision,” he said.

Among USC faculty, Rodman said, there was no widespread agreement on free speech.

“There are people who say, ‘We’re 1st Amendment absolutists,’ who believe that the remedy for speech you don’t like is more speech,” he said. “There are people who believe that the structural question of who owns the megaphone supersedes that. ... ‘Why should the people who own the apparatus of the transmission of ideas have the sole access to it?”

Rodman blamed officials, donors and legislators for the assault on campus free speech.

“The traditional values of the university are under assault by donors who wish to determine policy,” Rodman said. “They’re under assault by a government that places restrictions on what you can do once you have received government money.”

Students have also played a key role in setting up a climate of censorship, experts say.

About a decade ago, Morey said, 1st Amendment attorneys at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression began to notice a shift: Students, who had long advocated for their own free speech rights, were increasingly asking administrators to regulate words and ideas.

In 2014, students at Wellesley College started a petition calling for the removal of an outdoor statue of a man in his underwear, claiming that it was a source of “triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault.” The following year, students at Yale University demanded that Nicholas Christakis step down from his position as faculty-in-residence at Silliman College, after a viral moment in which he tried to converse with students who took offense at an email his wife, Erika Christakis, wrote to students questioning administrators’ guidelines on Halloween costumes.

Commencement ceremonies have long been a magnet for protests, with a rich tradition of students and faculty heckling speakers, turning their backs on them or forcing them to withdraw.

For more than a quarter of a century, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression has kept a campus deplatforming database that has tracked such disputes, starting with media mogul and Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner’s withdrawal from a 1998 commencement at Macalester College after students protested the team’s use of an Indian mascot.

By 2016, disinvitations were so common that President Obama, speaking at a Rutgers commencement, chided students for pressuring former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to drop out as commencement speaker two years before due to her role in the Iraq war.

Condoleezza Rice speaks at an event.

“I don’t think that’s how democracy works best, when we’re not even willing to listen to each other,” Obama said .

The focus on safety intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic as students became involved in Black Lives Matter protests, Morey said.

At USC, administrators made business professor Greg Patton “take a short-term pause” from teaching a communications course in August 2020 after Black students complained that a Chinese-language example he used during class sounded like a racial slur and caused them mental harm.

In a letter to MBA students, a dean wrote that such language was “simply unacceptable” for faculty to use because it could “marginalize and harm you and hurt your feelings of psychological safety.”

In November, administrators told Strauss he could not teach undergraduates that semester after he declared: “Hamas are murderers. That’s all they are. Every one should be killed, and I hope they all are killed.”

John Strauss pauses to talk to students at USC.

Strauss swiftly found himself the subject of dueling petitions: One called for USC to fire him and create a “safe learning environment free from hate speech or discriminatory behavior”; another urged officials to allow him back on campus, arguing that “Jewish people should not have to hide for their safety.”

In early December, USC administrators announced they had lifted all of the restrictions on Strauss.

Over the last few years, commencement disputes over controversial speakers calmed down as universities exercised more caution over who they invited. “They tried to avoid controversy, not by canceling speakers, but by avoiding inviting speakers in the first place,” Morey said.

The focus of controversy may now be turning to students.

Last year, a law student speaking at the City University of New York’s law school commencement caused a national furor when she called for a “revolution” to take on the legal system’s “white supremacy,’’ CUNY’s collaboration with the “fascist NYPD” and Israel’s “project of settler colonialism.”

After the New York Post ran a front-page story about the student, Fatima Mousa Mohammed — headlined “Stark Raving Grad” — CUNY’s Board of Trustees and chancellor announced that 2024’s commencement would not feature student speakers.

Figuring out what is a legitimate security threat on campuses has become increasingly fraught as activists and administrators blur the line between physical and psychological safety.

“Part of what has happened on university campuses for quite some time has been a claim about a kind of emotional and psychological safety,” Princeton’s Whittington said. “That’s primarily a conceptual argument — one that doesn’t seem to require any evidence in order to assert. Universities then can be extremely sweeping in who they might decide to censor or suppress or punish, in reaction to those kinds of complaints.”

Canceling speech while upholding safety in a vague way, without outlining a concrete threat or distinguishing between physical or psychological harm, would only encourage more complaints, Whittington said.

“Universities have an important obligation to explain that these kinds of concerns about emotional psychological safety are just not something that they can be responsive to at all,” Whittington said. “And in the case of genuine threats to physical safety, there ought to be a very high bar before the university is willing to take the step of shutting down a speaker.”

The irony of what happened to Tabassum is it has given her a much bigger platform.

In the last 48 hours, she has conducted a whirl of media interviews, appearing on CNN’s “NewsNight” and in a front-page story in The Times.

“When you silence us,” she said, “you make us louder.”

Teachers’ Day Speech in English

Teachers' Day is celebrated in India on the 5th of September every year. It is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was the second President of India and a great scholar. Teachers' Day is an important occasion for all the educational institutions and honours the hard work and teachings of all the respected teachers. It is a day filled with lots of excitement and celebrations for the school followed by a teachers day celebration speech. Therefore, we have provided here a speech on teachers’ day which can be referred to by the students. This article also contains a short speech and 10 lines of speech which might be helpful for students of all the classes.

Long Speech on Teachers Day Celebration

Introduction.

A very warm welcome to all my respected teachers and everyone present here. Today I am here to deliver a speech on Teachers’ Day. I would like to start my speech by thanking all my beloved teachers for always guiding us and bestowing us with all the teachings, moral values, and discipline. Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated every year on the 5th of September to mark the birthday of our second President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr. Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of India. He was also a great scholar, an ideal teacher, and a Bharat Ratna recipient. He was born on 5th September 1888 . It was after becoming the President of India, some of his friends and students approached Dr. Radhakrishnan to celebrate his birthday. To this, he replied that instead of celebrating his birthday on this particular date, it would be his privilege if 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day all over India. Thereafter, 5th September is celebrated every year to honour our beloved teachers who nourish and prepare us for a better future.

Teachers are our supporting pillars who play an important role in guiding us throughout our student life. They give their best to teach us valuable lessons in life and are our role models whom we look up to. I equally want to thank my parents for being my first mentors and supporting me in each and every step of my life. On this occasion, I would like to request my parents as well as my teachers to continue guiding me the same way.

It is said that the future of a particular country lies in the hands of its children. Thus, a teacher has a major role to play in shaping the future of the students and helping us become successful in our respective careers.

Teacher’s Day is thus celebrated to honour the hardships as well as to acknowledge their special role in our lives. It is a day full of excitement, activities, and special performances that are organized by the students, especially for their teachers. Teachers’ Day is not only celebrated in India but also is celebrated worldwide to appreciate the power of teaching. Different countries celebrate this day on different dates. But, UNESCO officially declared the 5th of October as the World Teachers’ Day in 1994.

Last but not least, I would like to end my speech by thanking you all for providing me with an opportunity to deliver a speech on my beloved teachers on this occasion of Teachers’ Day. I feel proud to call myself a student of this institution which has helped me evolve as a better person and has given me a passion to learn new things every day.

Short Speech on Teachers Day

Very good morning to everyone present here. I am here to deliver a speech on this auspicious occasion of Teachers’ Day. I would like to start by wishing all my respected teachers a very Happy Teachers’ Day. It is because of your hard work and dedication that we as students learn and grow into a better person every day. I would like to thank all the teachers for always standing with us as a supportive pillar and correcting our numerous mistakes. To mark their hard work towards teaching and honour them with appreciation, Teachers’ Day is celebrated all over India on 5th September.

Celebration of Teachers’ Day was started by the first Vice President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was born on 5th September 1888. He was also the second President of India and a great scholar. He had a passion for teaching and was also awarded the Bharat Ratna. Once when some of his students asked to celebrate his birthday, Dr. Radhakrishnan told them that he would be very honoured if instead of celebrating 5th September as his birthday, they celebrated it as Teachers' Day. This truly shows how much he was dedicated to teaching and passionate about paying respect to all the teachers. Thus, every year we celebrate Teachers’ Day to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Celebration of Teachers’ Day in school holds a special place in our hearts. Being a student, we get an opportunity to organize special performances in honour of our beloved teachers. This day is filled with fun, excitement, and lots of activities for all the students.

Lastly, I would like to thank all my teachers for playing role models in our lives and help us grow into better people. I am thankful to get an opportunity to deliver a speech on the special occasion of Teachers’ Day.

Despite being from a poor brahmin family, his thirst for knowledge never reduced. He was elected as the second President of India. The great philosopher's birthday is regarded as Teachers day. This day is special for every teacher and student. On this day, we students show our gratitude towards our teachers.

Even during this pandemic, our teacher has never stopped teaching us. Even if they are suffering from a deadly pandemic, they have taught us through various virtual platforms. We are grateful to our teachers for giving us love. Despite facing problems, they have given us the strength to fight against this deadly pandemic. Even though we are still trapped in our houses and missing our friends and the warmth of our classrooms, still through the virtual platform, seeing our teacher’s smile makes our day.

It is a great honour for me to give this speech and express my gratitude and respect towards my teachers on this auspicious day. We will always be your students, no matter how big we become. Thank you, teachers, for always staying with us.

Not teaching speech: University crackdowns are a cop-out

On university campuses across America, students are getting a hands-on lesson in speech repression as their administrators respond to their pro-Palestinian organizing by calling in the cavalry almost immediately.

It’s useful here to draw a line between the consequence of measured, administrative, intra-university action and the consequence of police response and arrest. A student who makes comments that could be perceived as threatening or harassing other students should be the focus of a disciplinary hearing where administrators examine the evidence and the students’ conduct history and so on with violators facing campus punishment, like suspension.

Then there is calling in the cops to make arrests of individual students as trespassers or large roundups with mass arrests.

At Emory University, police violently arrested a professor who had knelt down beside a student being arrested, and who had not touched the student or the cops or otherwise done anything threatening. After officers grabbed her, it was she who was charged with battery.

Dozens were arrested at the public, First Amendment-bound campus of the University of Texas at Austin, including a local TV photographer who was covering the situation. At many more campuses around the country, students and faculty have been arrested for, essentially, sitting around and making a political opinion known.

Here in New York, Columbia has recognized that inviting in the NYPD to clear the initial tent city was a mistake and Friday said “that to bring back the NYPD at this time would be counterproductive, further inflaming what is happening on campus, and drawing thousands to our doorstep who would threaten our community.”

University administrators have justified arrests by pointing to antisemitic incidents. This avoids the difficult work of managing competing constituencies and interests on campus. Calling the cops is in effect a cop-out, an abdication of universities’ role as clearinghouses of debate and ideas. Memories of police responses to campus protests past can obscure the fact that this has not always been the first resort. Now, student demonstrations barely have enough time to get set up before the riot officers start arriving.

It’s an anti-speech strategy and an ineffective one at that, in that it only makes students more militant and determined; had the original encampment at Columbia been allowed to continue for the few remaining weeks until the end of the semester, it would have generated some headlines. Instead, Columbia’s almost immediate crackdown has spurred encampments all around the country, and grown that university’s own.

Inevitably, there will be those who accuse us of turning a blind eye towards the antisemitism that infects some of the protests, having apparently not read any other of this board’s editorials . We believe that the student demonstrators are wrong in calling for a boycott of Israel, which is the objective of many, if not all, of the encampments. What we do support is a commitment to robust speech protections on campus — a position that, by the way, many of those cheering on the crackdowns at one point or another have also claimed to hold.

Universities can deal with truly threatening or harassing student behavior with investigations, suspensions and expulsion if need be — the tools that already exist for this. Leave the cops for the crimes, not the thought crimes.

Good morning students of Aditya Academy!

Today, I would like to talk to you about the most precious gift we have been given in this life, and that is the gift of life itself. Each and every one of you is unique, special, and capable of making a positive impact in this world.

As an English teacher, I see your potential every day. I see your desire to learn, your creativity, and your passion. And I want you to know that you have within you all the skills and abilities needed to achieve anything you want in life.

But sometimes, life can be challenging. You may face obstacles and setbacks, and it can be easy to lose sight of your goals and dreams. That's why it's important to remember that life is not about the destination, but about the journey. Embrace the ups and downs, and use them as opportunities to grow and learn.

I encourage you to have a growth mindset, to never stop learning, and to always keep pushing forward, no matter what challenges come your way. And always remember, life is not a competition with others, but a journey to become the best version of yourself.

So, my dear students, I leave you with this thought: Life is precious, and it's up to you to make the most of it.

Good morning students of National Gems Academy.

Today, I want to talk to you about the power of life and how to make the most of it. As an English teacher, I am privileged to be able to observe the potential that each and every one of you possess.

I want you to imagine that life is like a canvas. And every day, we are given a brush and paint to create our own masterpiece. The colors we choose, the strokes we make, and the design we create, will all come together to form the beautiful picture of our lives.

But, sometimes, we may feel lost or stuck, and we may not know what colors to choose or what strokes to make. That's why it's important to remember that life is not just about the destination, but about the journey. The journey is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, but it is through these experiences that we grow and learn.

Story of Vincent Van Gogh

Let me delve a little deeper into the story of Vincent van Gogh, one of the most iconic painters of the 19th century. Born in the Netherlands, Vincent was always drawn to the arts. Despite his family's objections, he pursued his passion for painting, driven by a deep love for the art form. However, Vincent's journey as a painter was far from easy. He struggled to make a name for himself, and his work was often criticised and rejected by the art world.

Despite the many setbacks and obstacles he faced, Vincent never lost his passion for painting. He continued to create, despite the lack of recognition and support, and today, his works are some of the most famous and valuable in the world. Vincent's persistence and dedication to his art serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on your dreams.

So, my dear students, I want you to take a page from Vincent's book. Embrace your struggles and use them as opportunities to grow and learn. Life is not a competition with others, but a journey to become the best version of yourself. Don't be afraid to face challenges head-on, and never lose sight of what you're passionate about. Remember, life is a canvas, and it's up to you to create the masterpiece that is your life.

And always remember, life is not a competition with others, but a journey to become the best version of yourself. Use your struggles as opportunities to grow, to learn, and to become a better person. Embrace the journey and never give up on your dreams. This is the message that Vincent van Gogh's life and legacy can teach us, and it is one that I hope you will take to heart.

And finally, I want you to think of your life as a work of art. The choices you make, the experiences you have, and the person you become, will all come together to create a beautiful masterpiece.
