This year Ozone Day is held under the theme Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change. Today, we celebrate the achievements of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This year’s theme highlights and reiterates the positive impact of the Montreal Protocol on ozone layer recovery and reducing climate change. Especially emphasizing the Kigali Amendment, which through the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and improved efficiency in the cooling sector, will provide additional climate mitigation benefits. The UNEP Ozone Secretariat has prepared a social media package in six languages, including cards, videos, and suggested messages, available on this Trello board .

A number of commonly used chemicals have been found to be extremely damaging to the ozone layer. Halocarbons are chemicals in which one or more carbon atoms are linked to one or more halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine). Halocarbons containing bromine usually have much higher ozone-depleting potential (ODP) than those containing chlorine. The man-made chemicals that have provided most of the chlorine and bromine for ozone depletion are methyl bromide, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and families of chemicals known as halons, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

The scientific confirmation of the depletion of the ozone layer prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer. This was formalized in the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer , which was adopted and signed by 28 countries, on 22 March 1985. In September 1987, this led to the drafting of The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Montreal Protocol

The principal aim of the Montreal Protoco l is to protect the ozone layer by taking measures to control total global production and consumption of substances that deplete it, with the ultimate objective of their elimination on the basis of developments in scientific knowledge and technological information. It is structured around several groups of ozone-depleting substances. The groups of chemicals are classified according to the chemical family and are listed in annexes to the Montreal Protocol text. The Protocol requires the control of nearly 100 chemicals, in several categories. For each group or annex of chemicals, the Treaty sets out a timetable for the phase-out of production and consumption of those substances, with the aim of eventually eliminating them completely.

The timetable set by the Protocol applies to consumption of ozone depleting substances. Consumption is defined as the quantities produced plus imported, less those quantities exported in any given year. There is also a deduction for verified destruction. Percentage reductions relate to the designated base-line year for the substance. The Protocol does not forbid the use of existing or recycled controlled substances beyond the phase-out dates.

There are a few exceptions for essential uses where no acceptable substitutes have been found, for example, in metered dose inhalers (MDI) commonly used to treat asthma and other respiratory problems or halon fire-suppression systems used in submarines and aircraft.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer ( resolution 49/114 ).

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol progressed well in developed and developing countries. All phase-out schedules were adhered to in most cases, some even ahead of schedule. Attention focused initially on chemicals with higher ozone-depletion potentials including CFCs and halons. The phase-out schedule for HCFCs was more relaxed due to their lower ozone-depletion potentials and because they have also been used as transitional substitutes for CFCs.

The HCFC phase-out schedule was introduced in 1992 for developed and developing countries, the latter with a freeze in 2015, and final phase-out by 2030 in developed countries and 2040 in developing countries. In 2007, Parties to the Montreal Protocol decided to accelerate the HCFC phase-out schedule for both developed and developing countries.

Universal ratification

On 16th September 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal ratification.

Kigali Amendment

The Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer reached agreement at their 28th Meeting of the Parties on 15 October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

So to create awareness and to acquire environmentally friendly techniques to reduce the use of chlorofluorocarbons, the UN general assembly proposed to celebrate world ozone day, this decision was taken in 1994, and since then world ozone day is celebrated every year on 16th September. This day is celebrated worldwide on national and international levels. Governments of different countries conduct awareness programs and ceremonies to spread the use of environmentally friendly and ozone protective products. Different programs are also conducted in schools and colleges to teach young ones how to protect our world. Different activities are managed by the teachers to develop awareness in students, so they can learn the use of environmentally friendly and ozone protective techniques.

Scientists and researchers proved that the use of Hydrofluorocarbons in place of Chlorofluorocarbons is less dangerous, according to research; hydrofluorocarbons have zero ozone depletion potential. Scientists have also observed that ozone depletion level has been lowering since the use of hydrofluorocarbons instead of chlorofluorocarbons.

In December, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly- UNGA proclaimed September 16 as World Ozone Day.
According to the UN, the Montreal Protocol has led to the phase-out of 99% of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators, air-conditioners and many other products.
Ozone layer protection efforts have also contributed to the fight against climate change by averting an estimated 135 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, from 1990 to 2010.
Part of the ozone layer has recovered at a rate of 1-3% per decade since 2000, and it is expected to return to pre-1980 levels by 2050.

World Ozone Day 2020

The slogan of World Ozone Day 2020 was ‘Ozone for life’. The slogan reminds that ozone is crucial for life on Earth and the world must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations also.
In 2020, World Ozone Day celebrated 35 years of ozone layer protection. It marks 35 years of the Vienna Convention.

Global Conventions to Protect Ozone Layers

It prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer.
The Vienna Convention provided the framework necessary to create regulatory measures in the form of the Montreal Protocol.
Its purpose is to regulate the production, consumption, and emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs).
The parties to the Protocol meet once a year to make decisions aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the agreement. These include adjusting or amending the Protocol, which has been done six times since its creation.
The most recent amendment, the Kigali Amendment, called for the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in 2016.
According to the amendment, the signing countries are expected to decrease the manufacture and usage of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by about 80-85% from their baselines until 2045.
This will curb global warming (by arresting global average temperature rise to 0.5 degrees Celsius) by the year 2100.

World Ozone Day – 16th September

World Ozone Day is celebrated on 16th Sep to highlight the dangers of depleting the ozone layer of the atmosphere. This gas covers the atmosphere and acts as a shield to the world from penetrating the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation to the earth’s surface. These harmful rays are reflected back to the space by the ozone layer for the sake of living being. Rowland and Mario Molina in 1973 established that industrial chemicals called chlorofluoro Carbons (CFCs) were eating away the upper ozone layer. The CFCs are pumped into air conditioners and refrigerators and leaks out directly into the air A CFC is transparent, which means it doesn’t absorb visible radiation and doesn’t rain out because it is insoluble in water. Thus it is inert. But when it reaches into the stratosphere, the upper part of the atmosphere, it encounters a different kind of solar radiation of energetic ultraviolet rays that is absorbed by the ozone layer. Thus an ozone hole, called black hole is created. Through this whole, ultraviolet radiation can enter into the earth’s surface and a number of hazards might take place. Scientists speculate that many types of diseases may occur.

Thus in 1989, the United States and the 12 nation European community agreed to try to get a total ban on CFCs.

Hence by observing the Ozone Day, we became cautious and knew the importance of ozone layer enriching our atmosphere.

The Only purpose of celebrating Ozone day that we all understand the Importance Ozone layer and we all come forward in protecting the ozone layer. On ozone day, we should try that bring more and more people to the program of ozone day so that they also understand the importance of the ozone layer.

ओजोन पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल की प्रमुख गैसों में से एक है जो हमारे वायुमंडल में मौजूद ओजोन परत का निर्माण करती हैं। यह परत सूर्य से आने वाली हानिकारक प्रकाश की किरणों को पृथ्वी पर आने से रोकती है। ओजोन परत सूर्य से उत्सर्जित होने वाली पराबैंगनी किरणों का अवशोषण करती हैं जिनके कारण मुख्य रूप से त्वचा कैंसर जैसी गंभीर बीमारियां हो सकती हैं।

ओजोन परत जीवन की सुरक्षा के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण परत है। इसके साथ साथ वातावरण में ओजोन की स्थिति पृथ्वी के मौसम और जलवायु को भी नियंत्रित करती है। इसी ओजोन परत के संरक्षण को बढ़ावा देने के लिए हर साल 16 सितंबर को ओजोन दिवस मनाया जाता है।

ओजोन क्या है?

ओजोन हमारे वायुमंडल में उपस्थित एक आणविक गैस है जिस का रासायनिक सूत्र O3 होता है। ओजोन कोई अलग गैस नहीं है बल्कि यह अक्सीजन का ही एक रूप है जिसमें तीन ऑक्सीजन अणु एक दूसरे से सहसंयोजक बंध और उपसहसंयोजक बंध द्वारा जुड़े होते हैं।

वायुमंडल में ओजोन गैस के अणु मिलकर एक परत का निर्माण करते हैं जिसे ओजोन परत कहा जाता हैं। ओजोन परत वायुमंडल परतों का ही एक हिस्सा है जो समताप मंडल और मध्य मंडल के बीच स्थित है। ओजोन परत की ऊंचाई लगभग 18 किलोमीटर से 50 किलोमीटर तक है। या फिर कह लीजिए कि यह मुख्य रूप से समताप मंडल में ही आता है जो वायुमंडल की दूसरी परत है।

इस ओजोन परत की खोज साल 1913 में हुई थी। इसकी खोज फ्रांस के दो भौतिकविदों ने की थी जिनका नाम फैबरी चार्ल्स और हेनरी बूसोन था। तब ओजोन गैस की अधिकता के कारण वायुमंडल की इस परत को ओजोन परत नाम दिया गया।

ओजोन परत का महत्त्व –

ओजोन ऑक्सीजन का ही एक अपरूप है जिसमें तीन ऑक्सीजन परमाणु मिलकर एक ओजोन अणु बनाते हैं। ओजोन को दर्शाने के लिए भी ऑक्सीजन की ‘O’ का उपयोग किया जाता है। हालांकि जहां ऑक्सीजन के अणु में केवल दो परमाणु (O2) होते हैं वही ओजोन के एक अणु में ऑक्सीजन के कुल तीन परमाणु (03) होते हैं।

पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में ओजोन की एक परत पाई जाती है जो सूर्य से आने वाले हानिकारक विकिरणों को अवशोषित कर लेती है। ओजोन द्वारा अवशोषित किए गए विकिरण इतने खतरनाक होते हैं कि अगर वह पृथ्वी तक पहुंच पाते तो यहां जीवन का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता। सूर्य से उत्सर्जित होने वाली पराबैगनी किरणे त्वचा कैंसर का मुख्य कारण होती हैं जिन्हें ओजोन द्वारा अवशोषित कर लिया जाता है।

इस लिहाज से ओजोन की भूमिका जीवन के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। अगर यह नहीं होता तो शायद आज हम नहीं होते। लेकिन ओजोन को लेकर दुनिया भर के लोगों में आज भी बहुत कम जागरूकता है। पृथ्वी के वातावरण में उत्पन्न प्रदूषण के कारण लगातार ओजोन परत में ह्रास हो रहा है जो एक गंभीर समस्या का विषय है।

ओजोन ह्रास क्या है?

पृथ्वी पर होने वाले पर्यावरण प्रदूषण स्थलमंडल जलमंडल और वायुमंडल तीनों को प्रभावित करते हैं। भूमंडल पर तेजी से फैलते प्रदूषण के कारण वायुमंडल में गैसीय अनुपात भी असंतुलित हो गया है जिसके कारण भूमंडलीय तापन अर्थात ग्लोबल वार्मिंग की समस्या उत्पन्न होती है।

वायुमंडल में होने वाले प्रदूषण अन्य परतों के साथ-साथ ओजोन परत पर भी बहुत बुरा प्रभाव डालते हैं। वायुमंडल में हो रहे इन्हीं प्रदूषण के कारण लगातार ओजोन परत का क्षरण हो रहा है जिस कारण इस परत में कई स्थान पर बड़े-बड़े छेद हो रहे हैं। इसी घटना को ओजोन ह्रास कहते हैं। सूर्य से आने वाली हानिकारक किरणों को रोकने में ओजोन परत की भूमिका सबसे महत्वपूर्ण होती है। ओजोन परत सूरी द्वारा उत्सर्जित पराबैंगनी किरणों को अवशोषित कर लेता है जिसके कारण उनका दुष्प्रभाव मानव जीवन पर नहीं पड़ता।

यह पराबैंगनी किरणें हमारे लिए कितनी हानिकारक हैं शायद यह बहुत कम ही लोग जानते होंगे! आपको बता दूं कि इन पराबैंगनी किरणों से हमें चमड़े का कैंसर मोतियाबिंद आदि जैसी कई गंभीर समस्याएं हो सकती हैं। केवल इतना ही नहीं पराबैगनी किरणों की उष्मा से पृथ्वी का तापमान भी बहुत ज्यादा बढ़ सकता है।

World Athletics Day is marked on May 7 annually to promote sports participation around the world. The fundamental goal of this day is to instill athleticism in young people. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) founded World Athletics Day as a social responsibility project called ‘Athletics for a Better World’.

This day is extremely important since it encourages fitness and good health. Many schools and universities commemorate World Athletics Day by holding sports tournaments. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is India’s principal governing body for athletics. Primo Nebiolo, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and an Italian sports administrator, founded World Athletics Day in 1996. The IAAF was created on July 17, 1912, in Stockholm, Sweden. World Athletics took its current moniker in 2019.

It is currently based in Monaco and acts as the worldwide regulatory body for athletics, which includes track and field competitions. It governs contests and sets official world records, as well as standardising sports equipment.

What Happens When NASA Loses Eyes on Earth? We’re About to Find Out.

Three long-running satellites will soon be switched off, forcing scientists to figure out how to adjust their views of our changing planet.

Sometime in the next few years — no one knows exactly when — three NASA satellites, each one as heavy as an elephant, will go dark.

Already they are drifting, losing height bit by bit. They have been gazing down at the planet for over two decades, far longer than anyone expected, helping us forecast the weather, manage wildfires, monitor oil spills and more. But age is catching up to them, and soon they will send their last transmissions and begin their slow, final fall to Earth.

It’s a moment scientists are dreading.

When the three orbiters — Terra, Aqua and Aura — are powered down, much of the data they’ve been collecting will end with them, and newer satellites won’t pick up all of the slack. Researchers will either have to rely on alternate sources that might not meet their exact needs or seek workarounds to allow their records to continue.

With some of the data these satellites gather, the situation is even worse: No other instruments will keep collecting it. In a few short years, the fine features they reveal about our world will become much fuzzier.

“Losing this irreplaceable data is simply tragic,” said Susan Solomon, an atmospheric chemist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Just when the planet most needs for us to focus on understanding how we are affected by it, and how we are affecting it, we seem to be disastrously asleep at the wheel.”

The main area we’re losing eyes on is the stratosphere, the all-important home of the ozone layer.

Across the stratosphere’s cold, thin air, ozone molecules are constantly being formed and destroyed, tossed and swept, as they interact with other gases. Some of these gases have natural origins; others are there because of us.

An instrument on Aura, the microwave limb sounder, gives us our best line of sight into this seething chemical drama, said Ross J. Salawitch, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Maryland. Once Aura is gone, our vision will dim considerably, he said.

Recently, data from the microwave limb sounder has been proving its worth in unexpected ways, Dr. Salawitch said. It showed how much damage was done to ozone by the devastating wildfires in Australia in late 2019 and early 2020, and by the undersea volcanic eruption near Tonga in 2022. It helped show how much ozone-depleting pollution was getting lofted into the stratosphere over East Asia by the region’s summer monsoon .

If it weren’t going offline so soon, the sounder might also help unravel a big mystery, Dr. Salawitch said. “The thickness of the ozone layer over populated regions in the Northern Hemisphere has hardly changed over the last decade,” he said. “It should be recovering. And it’s not.”

Jack Kaye, the associate director of research at NASA’s Earth Science Division, acknowledged researchers’ concerns about the end of the sounder. But he argued that other sources, including instruments on newer satellites, on the International Space Station and back here on Earth, would still provide “a pretty good window into what the atmosphere is doing.”

Financial realities force NASA to make “tough decisions,” Dr. Kaye said. “Would it be great to have everything last forever? Yeah,” he said. But part of NASA’s mission is also to offer scientists new tools, ones that help them look at our world in new ways, he said. “It’s not the same, but, you know, if not everything can be the same, you do the best that you can,” he said.

To scientists who study our changing planet, the difference between the same data and almost the same data can be vast. They might think they understand how something is evolving. But only by monitoring it continuously, in an unchanging way, over a long stretch of time, can they be confident about what’s going on.

Even a short break in the records can create problems. Say an ice shelf collapses in Greenland. Unless you were measuring sea-level rise before, during and after, you’ll never be sure a sudden change was caused by the collapse, said William B. Gail, a former president of the American Meteorological Society. “You might surmise it, but you don’t have a quantitative record,” he said.

Last year, NASA canvassed scientists for thoughts on how the end of Terra, Aqua and Aura would affect their work. More than 180 of them answered the call.

In their letters, which The New York Times obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the researchers voiced worries about a wide range of data from the satellites. Information about the particles in wildfire smoke, desert dust and volcanic plumes. Measurements of the thickness of clouds. Fine-scale maps of the world’s forests, grasslands, wetlands and crops.

Even if there are alternate sources for this information, the scientists wrote, they might be less frequent, or lower resolution, or limited to certain times of day, all factors that shape how useful the data is.

Liz Moyer takes an up-close approach to studying Earth’s atmosphere: by flying instruments through it, on jets that travel much higher than most planes can go. “I got into it because it’s exciting and it’s hard to get there,” Dr. Moyer, who teaches at the University of Chicago, said. “It’s hard to build instruments that work there, hard to make measurements, hard to get aircraft that go there.”

It will be even harder once Aura is gone, she said.

Planes can sample the atmosphere’s chemistry directly, but to understand the big picture, scientists still need to combine aircraft measurements with satellite readings, Dr. Moyer said. “Without the satellites, we’re out there taking snapshots with no context,” she said.

Much of Dr. Moyer’s research focuses on the thin, icy clouds that form nine to 12 miles above the ground, in one of the atmosphere’s most mysterious layers. These clouds are helping to warm the planet, and scientists are still trying to figure out how human-induced climate change is influencing them.

“It seems like we’re going to just stop observing that part of the atmosphere, and exactly at a time when it’s changing,” Dr. Moyer said.

The end of Terra and Aqua will affect the way we monitor another important driver of our climate: how much solar radiation the planet receives, absorbs and bounces back to space. The balance between these amounts — or, really, the imbalance — determines how much Earth warms or cools. And to understand it, scientists rely on the instruments of NASA’s Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System, or CERES.

Right now, four satellites are flying with CERES instruments: Terra, Aqua, plus two newer ones that are also nearing their end. Yet only one replacement is in the works. Its life expectancy? Five years.

“Within the next 10 years, we’re going to go from four missions down to one, and the one remaining will be past its prime,” said Norman G. Loeb, the NASA scientist who leads CERES. “To me, that’s really sobering.”

These days, with the rise of the private space industry and the proliferation of satellites around Earth, NASA and other agencies are exploring a different approach to keeping eyes on our planet. The future may lie with smaller, lighter instruments, ones that could be put into orbit more cheaply and nimbly than Terra, Aqua and Aura were back in their day.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is developing such a fleet for monitoring weather and climate. Dr. Loeb and others at NASA are working on a lightweight instrument for continuing their measurements of Earth’s energy balance.

But for such technologies to be useful, Dr. Loeb said, they have to start flying before today’s orbiters go dark.

“You need a good, long period of overlap to understand the differences, work out the kinks,” he said. “If not, then it’s going to be really difficult to have trust in these measurements, if we haven’t had a chance to prove them against the current measurements.”

In a way, it’s a credit to NASA that Terra, Aqua and Aura have lasted as long as they have, scientists said. “Through a mix of excellent engineering and a tremendous amount of luck, we’ve had these for 20 years now,” said Waleed Abdalati, a former NASA chief scientist now at the University of Colorado Boulder.

“We kind of got hooked on these satellites. We’re victims of our own success,” Dr. Abdalati said. “Eventually,” he added, “luck runs out.”

In the hush money trial against the former president, prosecutors called two witnesses Monday who worked in accounting in the Trump Organization: Jeffrey McConney , a former Trump Org. controller, and Deborah Tarasoff , an accounts payable supervisor.

McConney walked the jury through the paper trail that showed how executives organized and paid back Michael Cohen for the money he sent to Stormy Daniels’ attorney. This is important because at the heart of the trial — the falsification of business records — are the payments to Cohen, which were listed as retainer fees.

Tarasoff described in more detail how checks were paid at the organization and when Trump’s approval was needed for payments.

Here’s what happened in court today:

McConney testified that he had a conversation with Allen Weisselberg , former chief financial officer of the Trump Org., about a need to “reimburse” Cohen . McConney then showed jurors 12 checks, each for $35,000 , that were paid to Cohen in 2017. Cohen sent invoices for those checks and asked that the payments be listed as part of a “retainer agreement.” As previous testimony in the trial revealed, there was no actual retainer for Cohen.
McConney also explained to the jury why Cohen was paid $420,000 in all and how each check was cut, first from Trump's revocable trust and then from his personal account .
The jury also saw business records relating to the payment to Cohen that are tied to several of the 34 falsifying business records charges against Trump. The records show several rows and columns organized to record the payments.
On cross-examination, Trump attorney Emil Bove questioned McConney about his knowledge of Trump's role in these payments. "President Trump did not ask you to do any of the things you described?" Bove asked. "He did not," McConney testified. He said he was told to do this work by Weisselberg. McConney also said he did not know if Cohen did legal work for Trump in 2017.

Deborah Tarasoff

As accounts payable supervisor, Tarasoff said she would get an approved invoice , enter it into the system, cut the check and get it signed. Tarasoff testified that Trump or his sons needed to approve invoices of more than $10,000 and Trump was the only person who authorized checks from his personal account , including during his presidency.
Tarasoff said Trump would sign the checks by hand. She said they were signed in black Sharpie . Tarasoff said Trump did not always sign the checks, even when Weisselberg approved them. He would “write 'void' and send it back,” she noted.
Before Trump was president, Tarasoff testified that she “ would cut the check , put it with the backup and bring it over to Rhona (Graff) who would bring it in to Mr. Trump to sign,” referring to Trump’s former longtime assistant. The invoices and the checks were stapled together, she said, with the check on top of the invoice. When Trump became president, Tarasoff said they would mail checks to the White House .
The jury was shown the voucher form that said "retainer" in the description line that Tarasoff said she obtained from the invoice. Tarasoff also confirmed each of the $35,000 checks with Trump’s signature were sent to Cohen.
On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she was not present for conversations between Trump and Weisselberg about the payments. She also said she worked with Trump's children Eric, Don Jr. and Ivanka Trump, over the years. Tarasoff still works for Trump Org., which means she works for Eric Trump, who was also in the courtroom today.

What’s next: Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass estimated they still need about two weeks from tomorrow to make their case. He stresses that's a very rough estimate. The defense will also get an opportunity to call its witnesses after that if they choose.

Judge Juan Merchan ruled that Trump again violated his gag order for his comments about the jury.

Gag order hearing: Judge Juan Merchan found Trump in contempt for violating the gag order again, specifically concerning comments he made about the makeup of the jury in this case. Prosecutors had alleged Trump violated the gag order on four separate occasions . The judge ruled that the three other comments did not violate the order. "Going forward this court will have to consider a jail sanction," Merchan said, noting the $1,000 fine is not stopping him, but he told Trump “incarceration is truly a last resort .”

Remember: Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business record s. Each criminal charge relates to a specific entry among the business records of the Trump Organization, according to the indictment . Prosecutors allege that Trump allegedly disguised the transaction to Daniels as a legal payment and falsified business records numerous times to “promote his candidacy” in the 2016 election.

Prosecutors roughly estimate they need about two more weeks to make their case

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass says they're doing "well," but estimates they still need about two weeks from tomorrow. He stresses that's a very rough estimate.

Trump tapped defense attorney Todd Blanche's arm as Steinglass made the estimation.

What Deborah Tarasoff said in just over an hour of testimony

Deborah Tarasoff, who worked in the Trump Organization accounting department, testifies on Monday.

Deborah Tarasoff, an employee in the Trump Organization’s accounting department, testified for just over an hour Monday about the check-writing process at the company.

Tarasoff helped arrange the 12 checks for $35,000, each signed by Donald Trump and sent to former attorney Michael Cohen in 2017 as reimbursement for the $130,000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.

She testified that after 2015 any invoice over $10,000 had to be approved by Trump or one of his sons. When she created the checks, Trump would sign them, she testified — or, if he disapproved, he would write “void” on them, she said.

"If he didn’t want to sign it, he didn’t sign it," she said. She knew he was the one signing them because, "It was signed in Sharpie and it was black and that’s what he uses."

She testified she had no decision-making authority but followed instructions, including getting invoices approved, entering them into the system, cutting the checks and getting them signed.

On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she was not present for conversations between Trump and former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg about the payments.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche also noted that Deborah Tarasoff was not present for conversations between former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg and Donald Trump.

"When Mr. Weisselberg on some of the emails or Mr. McConney told you to go ahead and pay it, generate a check, you didn’t get permission from President Trump himself, correct?" Blanche said.

"Correct," she said.

She clarified with Blanche that all the checks to Michael Cohen shown in court were signed and that she doesn't know what happened with the checks after she mailed them to the White House.

But she did receive them back in the mail signed.

Blanche follows up with more questions about invoices

Attorney Todd Blanche is asking Deborah Tarasoff if Trump was focused on getting ready to be president during the start of 2017.

"I think so," Tarasoff replies.

Blanche follows up and asks whether the requests to pay for invoices "happens all the time?" Yes, Tarasoff says.

Blanche is trying to rehabilitate earlier testimony from Tarasoff that Trump would sometimes void checks for invoices he didn't want to pay. "If he didn’t want to sign it, he didn’t sign it," she testified earlier.

Tarasoff says Trump Org. is family-run and says she's worked with Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka Trump
