Finding Funding

Links to information and resources to help you find funding for your project

Where to start?

When identifying funding for your project it's usually useful to start by investigating which funders colleagues in your School or Institute are already receiving funding from.  Speak to your manager, peers, other academics, your School research administrator or your Edinburgh Research Office Research Funding Specialist.

Funding Opportunities Calendar

Edinburgh Research Office provides a Funding Opportunities Hub, including funding insights and intelligence. Linked below you will find the Funding Opportunities Calendar, as well as access to guidance and general information on a number of funding schemes and funders.

Funding opportunities can be presented in a number of ways

  • An open call for a particular type of proposal with no deadline, you can apply when your bid is ready
  • A specific call for a particular type of proposal, or a specific research topic with a deadline.  These can be either one off or recurring.  Fellowship calls are usually once or twice a year, every year, recurring.

ResearchProfessional

ResearchProfessional is a web service which provides research funding news and a comprehensive database of research funding opportunities. The University of Edinburgh subscribes to this service, which means you can use it to identify potential funding for your research.  Using the links below, select "University of Edinburgh" and login with your usual University login.

Eligibility

Research remit.

Most funders have a research remit that they focus their funding within, please note the funder is likely to have strategies or preferences even within their remit where they are more likely to fund some topics or approaches than others.  Speaking to your colleagues, getting your proposal peer reviewed before submission and using the funder intelligence resource from ERO are some of the ways to understand these preferences and increase your chances of success.

Funder Intelligence

If you aren't sure which of the UKRI research councils ( AHRC , BBSRC , ESRC , EPSRC , MRC , NERC & STFC ) your project falls into, or if your project is on a boundary, use the remit query service of the council you think is closest to the area of your project before you submit.

Who can lead a bid?

As well as a research remit, most funders also provide details of who they consider to be eligible to apply for or to lead bids they award.  Some funders are open to researchers applying and leading their own projects, others prefer to limit the project leadership responsibilities to academics on an open ended research & teaching contract.  If you aren't eligible to lead a project the funder may offer a "Researcher Co-Investigator" option, where you can demonstrate your involvement in developing the proposal even though you don't have the appropriate contract to take financial responsibility.

University of Edinburgh's Major Research Funders

When identifying funding for your project its usually useful to start by investigating which funders colleagues in your School or Institute are already receiving funding from.  There are many funders of various sizes that provide funding for research, the list below links to some of the largest funders awarding grants to UK universities  - this list is not exhaustive.

Historic investments accelerate R&D, support clean energy future

WASHINGTON, D.C. —   The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced more than $59 million to 25 U.S. colleges and universities, two national laboratories, and one industry organization to support nuclear energy research and development and provide access to world-class research facilities. With these awards, DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy has surpassed $1 billion in total funding to U.S. colleges and universities advancing nuclear energy research and training the next generation of nuclear energy leaders.

Since 2009, this historic funding initiative has supported some of the most influential nuclear technology research of the 21st century, including advanced reactor concepts, accident tolerant fuels, and structural materials of nuclear reactors. These awards are a crucial investment in future scientists and engineers who are working to advance nuclear technology to help reach President Biden’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

“Eclipsing one-billion-dollars represents an incredible investment in our nation’s colleges and universities, as well as the faculty and students performing nuclear energy research,” said Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Dr. Kathryn Huff . “We’re going to need a thriving workforce to triple nuclear energy by 2050 and meet the President’s ambitious climate goals. These awards move us one step closer to realizing a clean energy future.”

In the most recent round of awards, 50 total projects were supported in the following areas:

  • Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research (CINR) Research and Development ($44 million): Supports 44 awards and brings collaborative teams together to solve complex problems to advance nuclear science and technology.
  • CINR Integrated Research Projects ($9 million): Funds three multidisciplinary teams to address specific research challenges and capability gaps in nuclear energy.
  • Nuclear Science User Facilities ($6.6 million): Provides three research teams (1 industry organization and 2 national laboratories) access to world-class facilities and unique capabilities to help maintain the existing fleet of reactors and advance next generation nuclear technologies. Additionally, four of the CINR Research and Development university awardees will also receive Nuclear Science User Facility access funds.

Letter of Hope from the Office of Cancer Training and Career Enhancement

Read Time: 2 minutes Author: The Office of Cancer Training and Career Enhancement

CRTEC Team Photo

Dear Huntsman Cancer Institute Community,

We will achieve Huntsman Cancer Institute’s goal of a cancer-free future by improving clinical care, prevention, and cancer screening through basic, population-based, and clinical research. Over the last several decades, great strides have been made in each of these areas, but successfully treating cancer spans decades. To meet this challenge, Huntsman Cancer Institute is 100% committed to training the next generation of cancer researchers and physicians.

The mission of the Office of Cancer Training and Career Enhancement is to provide exceptional training opportunities for high school students, college undergraduates, graduate and medical students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Our National Cancer Institute-funded PathMaker Program for Cancer Research provides 10-week intensive research experiences for rising high school seniors and early undergraduate students from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce. This program also provides research and curriculum-development opportunities to middle school teachers, increasing its reach and impact.

In 2023, we launched a new research program in partnership with the 5 For The Fight Foundation. It provides research opportunities for college undergraduates at Howard University, an historically Black school . This program will expand in 2024 with 5 For The Fight’s long-term goal growing to include nine additional comprehensive cancer centers across the United States. For more advanced learners, we help guide and provide career-development workshops through the Huntsman Alliance for Postdocs , and we have a program that provides career development funding for underrepresented researchers or those investigating cancer health disparities across the Area We Serve . These are just a few examples of the many programs provided by our office and we look forward to adding more in the future.

“Successfully treating cancer spans decades. To meet this challenge, Huntsman Cancer Institute is 100% committed to training the next generation of cancer researchers and physicians.”

You’ll have undoubtedly noticed that many of our training efforts are geared toward those that are traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical workforce. This is an intentional decision because the data is quite clear that a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, races, and ethnicities elevates scientific discovery and innovation. Furthermore, from a clinical perspective, it is well known that patients receive better treatment from a primary physician with a similar race/ethnicity and life experience. In short, the Office of Cancer Training and Career Enhancement strives to create an inclusive training environment and celebrates the many positive benefits of training a diverse team.

We have come far since President Nixon declared the War on Cancer in 1972, but much remains to be done. Our past, present, and future learners are incredibly smart, dedicated, and compassionate. Their research builds on the generations that came before them. Equipped with more knowledge and technological advances too numerous to name, Huntsman Cancer Institute’s goal of a cancer-free future is in very capable hands. It is too early to claim that the next generation of cancer researchers will be the one to reach Mr. Huntsman’s audacious goal of eliminating cancer from the face of the earth, but we wouldn’t bet against them!

Thank you, The Office of Cancer Training and Career Enhancement

With support from the Student Research Travel Awards administered by the Office of Undergraduate Research , six University of West Georgia students presented mentored research at the 2024 National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Long Beach, California, on April 8-10.

The students’ participation in this event is the result of engagement in a mentored project lasting a semester or more that is helping to launch their careers before graduation. Acceptance to the conference confirms the relevance of their research, and presenting at the event elevates their competitiveness as they prepare for graduation, in addition to further enhancing UWG's reputation on the national stage.

The presenters were:

  • Marissa Keeler, “Binding Studies of Methylene Blue, Pyronin Y, and Acridine Orange with Cucurbit[7]uril and Cucurbit[8]uril using Constant Constraint Analysis.” Mentored by Drs. Farooq Khan and John Hansen.
  • Leetavious Maines, “Democratic Erosion in Uzbekistan: An In-depth Analysis of Historical Dynamics, Precursors, and Future Prospects.” Mentored by Dr. J. Salvador Peralta.
  • Kayleigh Metcalf, Kyli Cauthen, and Tian Green, “The Use of Analytical Methods to Enhance the Marketing of Chick-fil-A.” Mentored by Dr. Beheruz Sethna.
  • CJ Okpala, “Biochemical characterization of a new Microbacterium species isolated from a contaminated Chlamydomonas culture plate that is a vitamin B auxotroph.” Mentored by Dr. Mautusi Mitra.

UNO-CHART helped the state of Louisiana create a hazard mitigation plan. FEMA requires such plans for states to receive disaster aid and grants.

The University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology (UNO-CHART) helped craft the Louisiana State Hazard Mitigation Plan, which was recently approved by FEMA. The plan remains in effect until March 2029.

State hazard mitigation plans are required by FEMA to qualify states to receive federal aid and grants. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) worked with researchers at UNO-CHART, the LSU AgCenter LaHouse Research and Education Center, and LSU to develop the plan.

UNO-CHART supported the update of the Louisiana State Hazard Mitigation Plan with a focus on the planning process; state mitigation capabilities; the overall mitigation strategy; local coordination and capacity building; mitigation in action across the state, and plan review, evaluation, and implementation. Additionally, UNO-CHART updated the Statewide Community Rating System (CRS) Strategy and plans to update the current Statewide Repetitive Loss Strategy over the next year.

“UNO-CHART has participated in multiple mitigation planning efforts at the university, local and state level,” said Monica Teets Farris, director of UNO-CHART. “We worked on the 2019 State Mitigation Plan and were pleased to once again have the opportunity to support planning that will guide risk-informed decision-making for our state for the next five years.”

UNO-CHART is an applied social science hazards research center at the University of New Orleans that partners with and supports Louisiana communities in efforts to achieve disaster resilience with a focus on mitigation.

“Having a strong state hazard mitigation plan is critical to help Louisiana communities prepare and recover from disasters,” said Jeffrey Giering, Louisiana’s state hazard mitigation officer. “Partnerships with these universities are critical to our success and enable us to move the state’s emergency preparedness plan forward.”

The next phase of the statewide planning effort is to share information about natural hazard risk and ways to reduce this risk in Louisiana. Parishes throughout the state will be updating parish-level hazard mitigation plans and often use the Louisiana State Hazard Mitigation Plan as a baseline.
