b) Has more emotions
c) Better for building good relations.

Problems of Long-Distance Communication:

a) More misunderstandings happen between individuals.
b) Not practical for long time.
c) Lack of physical presence hinders the relations.

Role of Technology: Technology has changed face-to-face communication and has transformed it into virtual communication. Ultimately, came up with long term distances.

Types of communication:

‘One to one’ communication via mobile phones and messenger.
‘One to society’ communication is done through social media, when some influencer gets live and shares his thoughts.

Role of Technology: Technology has transformed Communication. It has been changing from ‘one to one’ communication into ‘one to society’ communication.

The Development of Character and Personality :

Communication helps to improve our personality. Because when we can share feelings and emotions with others, we learn new things. As technology has changed the way of communication, it helps an individual to become more extroverts in nature, bold and mature.

Innate Personality VS Developed Personality:

Innate: Innate means inborn talent.

Developed Personality: Developed personality is made through learning and gaining knowledge about various aspects of life from the society.

Role of Communication and Technology: Communication provides help to express inborn talent (especially modern or new technology). It also helps to develop skills and gain knowledge because through communication. With it we get to know about various new things. ‘ Communication helps to educate ourselves’.

Personality:

Happiness is hard to define as it means different things to different people.
People feel happy when share their views and thoughts and spend time with family.
Another source of fun and enjoyment are hobbies, sports and games.
Moreover, money is also considered as a source of happiness but it is not.
There are others which define happiness as something deeper and are into salvation.
To live a good life, its important to be happy and have stability.
Life has to be meaningful to remain happy.
Achievement and Success lead to happiness.
Rearing and bringing up children also leads to happiness.
Religious activities can also cause happiness.
Same like happiness, success is hard to define.
Raising a family is considered as symbol of success by few .
Being wealthy or having a high status are elements of success in modern life.
Rich and famous people as seen as successful in life but the masses.
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs are epitome of success for the people.
Their success is due to their hard work in their profession.
Achieving personal or professional goals is also symbol of success.
Hard work is the only source of success.
Long-term planning and effort is the path to success.

Nature or Nurture:

Genetics/ genes determine our personalities
Our abilities and talents are inherited from our parents.
While Others believe that our education and upbringing are more crucial.
Our personalities develop according to the influences around us.
Nurture is more important than nature.
Our personality is more influenced by the way of nurturing.
Personalities are the hard work of nature and nurture.
By working hard and planning, we can achieve our goal.
Many successful people are self-made as they work hard
We are not limited by our genetic characteristic or upbringing rather they develop with time.

Communication

News plays an important part in most people’s lives. why is news so important to people why is so much news dedicated to bad news should the news focus on the food news instead.

Take a look at the model answer.

The news is a vital way of communicating information in everyone’s lives. This essay believes that being updated to current events makes news essential to our existence. Firstly, this essay will discuss the importance of news to the general public, secondly, why there is a large portion of news devoted to horrific events and lastly, why we should focus more on reporting positive stories.

On the one hand, people should rely on news channels to be updated on current events because somehow the general population is always affected by it. Information we have learned from news broadcasts may affect our choices whether we vote for one person or another, learning about a place that has a conflict or to know what is happening with world economics. For example, Pulse Asia in 2015 reported that 98% of presidential candidates in the Philippines counted on media coverage to reach potential voters all over the country.

On the other hand, many news networks choose to report about negative occurrences simply because of gaining higher ratings. They rely on the numbers of people who tune in to their news programs as this generates a lot of commercials, thus results in larger revenues since companies pay a lot of money for exposure. For example, an article released by GMA news Philippines in 2014 reported that 89% of their audiences would remember news about horrific crimes rather than news about the economic growth of the country.

Lastly, in my opinion, I believe that broadcasters should concentrate more on showing news that inspires other people. Hearing about positive news motivates viewers to have a better view of the world and in society. When disasters strike, often widespread news of people donating food and blankets, can promote the cause and motivate others to get involved. For instance, in my own personal experience in 2016 during the wrath of Haiyan in the Philippines, I was inspired by a news story asking for help, so I sent food and money as a small contribution.

In conclusion, people should be informed about the latest happenings around the globe whether it is good or bad news. News can also inspire people to work together in times of conflict, during wars, natural disasters and other humanitarian plights.

Some say that the Internet is making the world smaller by bringing people together. To what extent do to you agree that the Internet is making it easier for people to communicate with one another?

Electronic mail, instant messages, web cameras and microphones; all these gadgets and programs make the presence of the other person more real. Who knows; with the help of visual reality you might even get a 3-D image of the speaker! I believe that the Internet is one the best inventions of the last century, you can hardly get to miss anyone and nobody is really out of reach. You can keep in touch with your friends, and be able to do your work from your bedroom in your pajamas!

However, the internet can also be a major source of harassment. Spammers and hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which otherwise they never get access to. You are never out of anybody’s reach, unless you make a conscious decision of not checking your email, there can be always more work waiting for you in your inbox and you might never have a moment to yourself. Worse yet, if you were a workaholic, you might never experience that stress-free vacation ever again in your life – simply, because you have your mobile workplace with you at all times.

As a romantic, I will always look forward to getting an occasional letter in the snail mail. A personal letter, where I can sense the mood of the writer by the slants in his/her handwriting and get to know him/her better. But as a type A personality person, the internet gives me all what I dream of in terms of communication – the speed, reliability, and convenience of time and place. I can certainly tolerate its shortcomings any day, as long as it keeps me close to my loved ones.

This is a great essay, which seems worthy of Band 7 or perhaps even 8. It is longer than required (340 words instead of 250) which means that it took you more time to write and less time to check your work.

Below are two sample essays, each with scores and critiques from an actual IELTS examiner.

Question: Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any other experiences we may have in our life. Which do you consider to be the major influence? (Word requirement: 250 words)

Everyone is a unique being on the world. It’s not only because how we look but also our personality is different from the others. As the same time, personality is also the most important element to form a person. There was a research suggest that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality than any other experience we have in our life. Honestly, this is a brilliant idea.

There are lots of reasons to form a character, such as family and experiences. However, the most important element is your personality. Your personality decided what you will do when you face a situation and the way how you look the world. Basically, your personality makes who you are and makes everyone an individual.

Although the personality influence us a lot, there is still another things which also plays an important role in our life, our experience we had. Honestly, our experiences will definitely influence us but the influence won’t be as big as how our characteristics we born with. This is because our characteristics will decide how we think and this will result in different reaction and form the different personality.

There were lots of experience that our characterizes influence us more than our experiences. Thomas Edison, who invented the lightball and many other things, was considered as mentally retarded when he was a child. Tom Cruise is a learning disorder child. However, due to their characteristics, they didn’t give up themselves and worked hard, these two people became so famous and success.

To sum up, no matter you are born in what kind of environment and what terrible things you have met, be more optimistic and do whatever you are going to do. Let your experiences stop your step.

Comments: The essay is well organized and does make good use of some effective complex and compound sentences. Although some of these sentences contain errors, some are grammatically sound. There is quite a bit of word repetition but the choices are adequate to complete the task. The main problem is that the question is not answered. The prompt asks to state the major influence, experience or characteristics. The writer argues for both sides and this is not what was required. In addition, a portion of the prompt is copied into the essay, and this is not allowed on the writing exam. Therefore, a Band 5.5 would be achieved.

As some reports state, “The features we have naturally have much more effect on our personality and development than other experiences that we have in our life.” This is a controversial issue and it makes people confusing which one is the major influence that affects ourselves. For me, I think both of them are important; however, experiences have much higher influence on us.

Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” I agree with it very much. Edison had some learning problems when he was little; however, he worked very hard, trying more than 1000 kinds of bulbs and invented the most useful thing, light in our world. He experienced a lot of mistakes and achieved great work. It shows that maybe he was not the smartest person, but a perseverant one. Take another person for example, Stanley Yan, one of the hotel presidents, wasn’t a good student at school. However, he went to a delivery company to become a fundamental employee and tried his best to learn. Through a lot of hard work, he became the president of the company. Afterwards, his leadership ability caught other people’s eyes; thus, he was asked to become the president of the hotel. From these examples, they prove that experience may have more influence to make people successful. After a lot of stress, mistakes, and hard work, the harvest of them all are much more meaningful.

To sum up, in my opinion, the experiences you have may change your life. You can turn your weak personality or development into your strength by training yourself. Getting through a lot of experiences will make you stronger.

Comments: This essay states the opinion in the introduction and gives examples for support. There is good use of complex sentences, although there is some overuse of the word, “however”. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and there is a logical flow throughout. This might score a Band 6 on IELTS writing.

The impacts of digital communication on human relationships have long been a topic of controversy. From my perspective, modern means of communication may sabotage one’s relationships with other people.

The most typical example of today’s communication technology is the mobile phone. Originally designed to provide people with instant access to telecommunication, it has become indispensable for most people in modern society. Nowadays, various features such as built-in cameras and interactive games have been added to the mobile phone, making it multifunctional and thus even more popular. However, I believe the omnipresence of mobile phones in particular, or digital communication tools in general, often interferes with the bonding time that people share and thus has a negative influence on interpersonal relationships. There is compelling evidence for my belief. If people use mobile phones for work purposes, business calls may disrupt any real-life conversations they have. This is the case for millions of working people who may have overlooked the importance of having smooth and uninterrupted conversations with other people. They may be unaware that relationships are at risk of eroding when people spend less quality time with each other. Also, if people use mobile phones to play games, the constant urge to complete game missions may disengage them from social gatherings. For example, many teenagers sacrifice real-life socialising time for mobile game playing time. In the long term, this would be likely to cause friends to drift apart.

Some people use mobile phones mainly for virtual social networks, and notifications and messages from these sites may prevent them from having intimate conversations with their loved ones. There are many real examples of couples on the verge of breaking up because one or both partners have grown overly attached to social network applications on mobile phones, and they find it hard to maintain a sense of intimacy.

Although most people use mobile phones for all personal as well as professional reasons and consequently, they need to pay constant attention to their phone, however, potentially isolating those in their company. In this way, mobile phones may dull real-life interactions and affect relationships as a result.

In brief, the constant distraction of modern communication devices such as mobile phones may cause the breakdown of numerous social relationships.

Ever since the era of technology emerged, life has changed dramatically. Today where every second thing is being operated by digital contrivances, some ill effects have come floating by, as well. Generally, people put forth that the current digital scenario and communication devices and interfaces particularly have impeded and halted conventional interactions. I agree with this notion and shall be illustrating the same in the forthcoming paragraphs.

Mobile phones have been the major disruptive cause in evicting out the person to person verbal communication. Owing to this sociability and amicability has been corroded off to substantial capacity.

Secondly, people while being there in an online medium and e-communication transmission mask their realities to a larger level where it is hard to discern as to what one person is gravely going through behind the lenses. Moreover, a sense of harmony and connectedness has been deeply lacerated as one can’t get through the emotional streamline of others as well as it is in the case of one to one conversation. In addition to that, work from home, online schooling and internet parties can never compare and become congruent to the essence of offline setup. The gist and feel of very communication without screen barriers have definitely been exacerbated by the day to day unstinted techno-growth. In the era of digitalisation, the huge reliance on information technology to change the world in a unique way is no longer a fresh perspective. The advent of AI adoption and vast social media interaction is partly blended into human’s daily life. As a result, it ramps up the globalisation and distance between people is getting shorter as digital technology integrates people around the globe. First, the innovation of present communication technology has established an adamant fact that it changes human lives by accelerating the socioeconomic changes. There are a lot of built-in apps and online games available for people to explore by using their sophisticated mobile phones. Nonetheless, excessive reliance on the mobile phones will aggravate the fundamental relationship-building with people in real life. According to a publication, the teenagers and young adults have spent an average of 4 hours daily on their mobile phones. The result indicates that they devote most of their leisure time on gluing to the mobile screens apart from working or studying. Moreover, most parents reveal the truth that their children enter their rooms once they are back from school. This negative and worrying phenomenon has been invading the original social life as an adult, and they are ignoring in fostering a genuine relationship with their loved ones through face-to-face conversation. In the meantime, the addictive behaviours on playing online games among teenagers inhibit their intellectual skills as this may impact how they think, interact and work when they are entering the working society.

Second, the online education and various virtual meetings have been promoted since the outbreak of the COVID-19 which restrict people from engaging in real world environment. The rise in the digital adoption has particularly provided convenience to majority of people as they have the chance to obtain learning certificates from prestigious institutions in the view of ensuring a stable internet connection during the lesson. Despite these conveniences, the virtual studying environment is simply incomparable to the physical learning condition as most of the lectures could not detect the implicit or verbal behaviours of the students to acknowledge whether they are fully comprehending their lectures. This certainly makes the learning outcome less desirable compared to conventional teaching method. For instance, I am the living example who currently pursuing an online MBA program. In fact, I have lost the real opportunities to have a post-class discussion with my classmates or lecturers as there was a time limit being imposed on the live session. In accordance with these constraints, I had to post my questions by sending e-mail and Whatsapp messages which increases the communication cost due to longer time taken for replies. This poses some barriers on me in fortifying relationship with faculty members and fellow classmates.

As whole, I am advocating strongly that unintended social consequences are eminent due to extensive use of advanced communication technology. Although online communication provides fresh alternatives to expand the choice of communication medium, this tool should not be supplanting the primary use of communication tool via physical interaction. As a fact, digital communication tool is providing supplementary outlet for the role of real-world communication when someone is not available for meet-ups.

Sample essay

A person’s personality determines how they will behave in a particular situation. Some people have a sunny disposition. They spread joy wherever they go. Some are always moody and anyone who interacts with them may find themselves affected by their negativity. In my opinion, personality certainly describes a person because it is the outward display of our character, values, likes and dislikes.

People may be able to fake their emotions. For example, someone who is jealous of your success may actually hide that emotion and try to appear happy for you. Personality, however, cannot be faked that easily. It defines you. For instance, it is nearly impossible for an introvert person to conduct himself as an extrovert. Introverts are happy within their cocoons and have little inclination to socialize with others. They may show high levels of loyalty to the few people in their life. They may also possess higher levels of creativity and imagination because of their ability to explore the world inside. They may also make great thinkers or writers. Extroverts, on the other hand, have an outgoing personality. They are crowd pullers and make excellent leaders. They make friends wherever they go and have an agreeable disposition.

Some people have an altruistic personality. They find happiness in helping others. They have a spiritual bend of mind and may even come across as unworldly. They inspire many people around them and may even have a decent following. It is nearly impossible for an altruistic person to cheat or hurt others. This personality trait makes them highly valued and respected members of the society. Often times, they put others’ interests above theirs and their family may dislike this trait of them.

In conclusion, the personality of a person provides an accurate description of their character. By simply analyzing the personality we can determine whether somebody is selfish, dependable, sociable or aloof.

How to improve your answer in the most common IELTS topics

I’ve noticed over the years the student’s often lack topic awareness in both IELTS speaking and writing.

As this limits their ability to display the language which is being assessed, it’s important to have at least some basic knowledge of the topic areas that frequently occur in the IELTS test.

Having a broad awareness of IELTS topic areas also offers the opportunity to provide answers and essays that surprise the examiner and generate interest, thereby putting your work on a higher footing.

For this reason, I’m collecting good articles to read according to their topic area; the broad topic areas that come up in areas of the IELTS exam.

I am adding to this list all the time.

This is one of the many articles I’ve listened to or read which, from experience, I know feature heavily in the IELTS test.

Why should I invest time in IELTS reading

Having an good general awareness of IELTS topic areas means your writing and speaking opinions can be more relevant.

Being prepared means that you are better positioned to give an opinion on any number of popular topic areas.

This is especially the case in writing; the ability to generate ideas under the pressure of the exam is usually down to a lack of knowledge around the key topic areas.

Common IELTS Topics

So, I’ve created a page for IELTS worthy reading and listening articles.

These feature the most common topic areas I have seen in IELTS reading, writing and listening.

The added advantage of using some of these resources is that not only are they good for increasing vocabulary levels, reading comprehension and speed, but they help provide a foundation of ideas important for topic awareness and idea generation.

Communication Technology Essay

This Communication Technology Essay is about how relationships have been impacted. This is the question:

Nowadays, the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make?

Is this a positive or negative development?

Understanding the Task

You should be able to see that there are two parts that need to be answered:

The first part is about general effects and the second part is asking for your opinion about this.

So it doesn't easily fit into an essay 'type'.

Don't worry about this. If you have learned to recognize different types of essay but you find one that does not seem to fit any, just focus on working out exactly what you are being asked.

So in this one you have to brainstorm some ideas about the way relationships have changed.

Stating your Opinion

For the second part you need to decide if it is positive or negative, or both.

Choosing one side and writing about it is probably the simplest way to approach it. In other words:

Body 1: The way relationships have changed
Body 2: The negative impacts (or positive)

Although it says ' positive or negative ', it's YOUR opinion, so if you decide it is both it is fine to say this as long as you make it clear .

In this model Communication Technology Essay, the writer has stated that it is both positive and negative.

Body 1: The way relationships have changed (positive)
Body 2: The negative impacts

When you take a look at the model answer, you'll see the writer has discussed the new types of relationships and labelled them as positive, but then gone on to look at the negative sides.

There are usually several ways you can approach and organize an essay, not just one. As long as it is coherent and answers the question, that is fine.

Now take a look at the model answer and the comments below.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

It is evident that technology has transformed the ways of communication and influenced relationships in a variety of ways. In my opinion, there are both positive and negative effects of this.

The principal way in which relationships have been affected is that they tend to be at a distance rather than face-to-face. The advent of the internet has made it easy for business owners to communicate across the world, with remote job opportunities one call away. Online educational programs are available for people residing in different countries, and it is no longer a dream to attend live classes from the comfortable environment of a home. Not only this, the social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have revolutionized relationships, be it making online friendships with people from other countries or staying in touch with loved ones. Based on this perspective, technology has influenced relationships in a positive way.

However, despite these advances, the quality of interaction has significantly declined in several respects. If people are developing most of their relationships online, this means that they may also have less fact-to-face contact. This kind of contact on a personal level is important for human beings to feel wanted and a part of society. This may be a particular problem for children's social development as they used to be seen playing out on the streets but are now too often indoors. Technology can also mean people are detached from what is going on around them even when they are out, as can be seen by the many people staring into their mobile phones as they travel or walk around.

In conclusion, technology has brought some positive development in the ways people interact with each other. However, there are also some negative impacts of technology on the types of relationships people make.

This Communication Technology Essay would get a good score for the following reasons.

It fully answers the question, setting out the way the types of relationships people make have changed (they tend to be ' online ') and then expanding on this by giving examples.

A balanced opinion is also clearly explained, with the impacts in the first body paragraph seen to be positive, and the second body paragraph dedicated to explaining the negative points.

The essay is also clearly organised and coherent, with the opinion clearly stated and the body paragraphs clearly each focused on one central idea.

There is also good vocabulary used and good collocations. For example:

advent of the internet
remote job opportunities
social platforms
revolutionized relationships
people are detached from

The grammar shows accuracy and a wide range of structures are used.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 - Style questions

Examiner: Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Minna: Yes, I do, but I admit that it does depend on the context. For example, if I am with a group of life long friends as well, I feel more confident and relaxed than if I am alone, when I feel more timid and awkward.

I think that at work I try to put up a façade of being professional and in control although underneath the surface I am paddling like a swan.

Examiner: Would you describe yourself as a sociable person?

Mario: I’d like to say so, as I am always happy to get involved in organising parties and gatherings – indeed I can be a bit of a control freak , as I have an eye for detail. However, I would be more than delighted to be described as reliable and dependable as we all need friends we can rely on .

I have known my best friends since school, and we trust each other completely and pick up where we left off each time we see each other.

Examiner: Are you usually punctual or late?

Judy: That’s a great question! Every year I make a resolution to be on time for both work and social meetings, but I have a terrible habit of always being slightly late.

I know that punctuality is a virtue and I am always embarrassed by being a bad time keeper , especially when I understand that being late is rude and disrespectful . I will keep working on improving this negative trait .

IELTS Speaking Part 2 - Style question

Describe a person you would like to be similar to. you should say.

Who this person is?
What this person does?
What qualities this person has and explain why you would like to be similar to this person?

Edin: I’d like to talk about a teacher who is Head of Pastoral care at a school I used to go to. Pastoral duties revolve around the mental and social health of students more than the academic side but of course, the two work in tandem.

This lady, Mrs Butler, has held this job for more than a decade, and she is inspiring with her attention to detail and caring personality.

It is her job to interact with students, in a relaxed, almost parental way and create the kind of atmosphere where they can trust her, and share any problems and issues they may have.

As part of her duties, she would liaise between the students and other members of staff, education, and healthcare professional bodies, and parents as needed.

The interpersonal and communication skills required for this role are very demanding and take a long time to learn if not acquired naturally.

Mrs. Butler is enormously empathetic, she really understands emotion and is a great and generous listener and I believe these are all key qualities that are important to emulate .

I think that interacting with students and colleagues at work can present many challenges and an understanding of human characteristics, even the psychology, of how people think and respond to each other is more and more important.

I would love to be considered as caring, considerate, and reliable as she is and she is really one of those rare people who can connect with anyone, anywhere.

explain why you like this person

IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Style question

Examiner: How do you think the personalities of men and women vary?

Sergi : It is often said that men can be more opinionated and less empathetic than women and it is true that this is often a male stereotype .

However, compared to previous generations, many men today are more in touch with their feelings, less moody and are much more aware of the challenges faced by regarding juggling a family and parenthood.

Examiner: How do companies try to assess the personalities of people who are applying for jobs?

Alice: Rather than a traditional interview nowadays, many companies demand high grades in psychometric tests which have been designed to test character in order to select candidates who are compatible with the company mentality.

Whilst these tests may highlight insecure or weaker candidates, I am not convinced that it is the most effective way to judge personality.

Examiner: Why do you think they do this?

Aloic: In my opinion, these tests are used to save time as most jobs today attract numerous applicants and it must be hard to choose the strongest and most suitable.

That said, to be defined by an algorithm or computer program is terrifying and critics suggest that it cannot effectively determine those with good communication skills or natural leaders .

Communication is a part of everyday life, and you may be asked about different aspects of communication such as the methods and characteristics. Below are IELTS vocabulary words you can use to discuss how people communicate with one another and how to describe people communicating. There are some exercises for you to practice with real IELTS questions.

1. Communication Vocabulary

Accurate – Correct or truthful
Bias – To show unfair favouritism to one side in an argument or contest
Body language – The way bodily movements communicate what a person is thinking/feeling
Communicate – The act of sharing news, ideas, and information
To converse – To talk
Computerised – Something that has been produced, adapted, stored, or processed by a computer
Confuse – To make a mistake and misunderstand something/To cause someone to be confused
Diligent – A hard-working person
Dialogue – A discussion between two or more people that is often aimed at resolving problems
Distract – To stop someone from giving their entire attention to something
Dry – A sarcastic, matter-of-fact person who is often unintentionally funny
Imply – To suggest what you want in an indirect manner
Clarify – To make something understood by repeating it or giving more detail
Dishonest – Not accurate or truthful
Egoist – A person who only thinks about themselves and their ego
Expression – A word or phrase used to convey an idea
Extrovert/Outgoing – A person who is very expressive and enjoys socialising with others
Eye-contact – The act of looking directly at someone’s eyes. Often seen as a sign of honesty/trust
Facial expression – The look on a person’s face that conveys their emotions
Frank – Open, honest, and direct
Genuine – An honest and truthful person who does not pretend to be something they are not
Gossip – News shared between people that is often trivial or is about other people
Ineffective – Does not provide the desired effect/result
Interaction – Communication or involvement with something or someone
Interview – A conversation that usually involves the asking and answering of questions. For example, jobs, news, radio shows etc…
Introvert – A shy person who is focused on their feelings more than interaction with others
Message – A written or verbal communication that is left for a recipient who cannot be contacted directly/ Social media/Text messages are electronic communications sent over the internet or phone
Non-verbal – Communication without words. Usually made with body language and facial expressions
Passionate – A person who feels very strongly about something
Perspective – A specific view or attitude
Posture – The position of the body while sitting or standing / A particular way of behaving
Receiver – A person/entity to whom communication has been sent
Sender – The person/entity who sends a communication
Sincere – Something/Someone truthful and honest
Verbal – Communication that is spoken
Witty – Funny because of a quick and inventive sense of humour

3. idioms, phrasal verbs & collocations .

These are some common idioms, phrasal verbs, and collocations you can use to answer IELTS questions on the topic of communication. Using these words/phrases correctly will make your answers sound more natural and concise. There is an exercise for you to practice using the words with some real IELTS questions.

Beat around the bush – To not get directly to the point
Can’t get a word in edgeways – When you cannot speak because the other person is speaking too much
Come out of your shell – To become less shy and become more talkative
Effective communicator – A person who is good at talking to others or conveying a message
Face to face – In-person, rather than over a telephone or the internet
Get in touch – To make or establish contact with someone
Get something off your chest – To tell someone about something that has been making you upset or unhappy
Instant messaging – Messages that are sent straight away via internet apps like WhatsApp
Having said that – Means the same as ‘Despite what I just said’
Hearsay – Information that is usually passed from one person to another and that cannot be proven/disproven. Similar to ‘gossip’
Make sense – To find meaning in something or to understand something
Needless to say – Means the same as ‘of course’ or ‘it’s obvious that’
On the same page – Parties that agree about something or hold the same position/opinion
One on one – Two parties that come into direct contact or correspondence
Spill the beans – To reveal information
Spread like wildfire – Something that moves very quickly from person to person. For example, news or gossip
Stay/Keep in touch – To maintain contact
Talking to a brick wall – Talking to an unresponsive audience who does not react
When all is said and done – At the end
Word of mouth – Spoken language / Information that is passed from person to person
You can say that again – I agree with you
