NORTH Presentation Secondary School will begin life in September 2023 with a brand-new name as the Farranree-based school prepares to usher in a new era as a co-educational secondary.

North Presentation Secondary School and St Vincent’s Secondary School were recently engaged in a process to amalgamate the two Cork city schools, until the patrons of St Vincent’s the Religious Sisters of Charity, withdrew from the process following opposition to the plan.

Undeterred, North Presentation is continuing with its plans to expand its provisions as a co-educational school for next September.

The secondary school held an open night on Thursday evening as they outlined their ambitious plans for a ‘positive’ culture of change.

School principal Adrian Gibbs told The Echo the new school name will encompass the tradition and history of the community.

“From September 2023 North Presentation will be known by a new name that encompasses the true inclusivity, tradition, resilience, and history of our community and the foundress of the Presentation Order Nano Nagle,” he said.

Mr Gibbs said choosing the new name will involve students, parents, and the wider school body working together to come up with a name for its new era.

“We have a form that we are sending to all our students, parents, and board of management. Everybody has an opportunity to come up with names.

“We will establish a committee and when we have five names, we will send them to our trust. Our trust will then come back with approval for those five names. It will then be up to us to decide on which one we will have going forward,” he added.

The secondary school principal said the name change is only one of several changes that the school will be implementing. “We are updating our mission statement to be more reflective and inclusive of the times we live in. The name change is only one aspect of several changes that our school is implementing which includes a new school crest and uniform.

“We will be involving all students, teachers, parents, board of management, trust, and our local feeder primary schools.

“We are delighted to be engaged in a positive culture of change that will allow greater choice for our current and future students,” he said.

north presentation secondary school

Nano Nagle College has evolved from North Presentation Secondary School. The school was founded by the Presentation Sisters who in turn were founded by Nano Nagle.

Nano Nagle was born in Ballygriffin, Co. Cork in 1718 during the Penal Law Times. She received her early education in the local ‘Hedge School’ and later was sent to France to continue her education.

On her return to Cork in 1747, she was shocked by poverty and the need for education among the poor of Cork. Nano began her first school in Cove Street in 1754.

News of her school spread to the northside. Nano rented a hut on Philpott Curran Lane, off Shandon Street. Out of this came North Presentation Primary School which opened in 1813 on Gerald Griffin Street.

North Pres opened a ‘Secondary Top’ in Gerald Griffin Street which, in time, with the advent of free education became a full secondary school. The secondary school grew in numbers and a new building was required.

North Pres once again evolved and a green field site in Farranree was developed. The new school opened on 21st November 1969, with a procession of students and Presentation Sisters from Gerald Griffin Street to the new school in Farranree.

The official opening was in 1970. The school continued to grow in numbers and, although unsuitable, the old school in Gerald Griffin Street was reopened to cater for this. Both schools operated in tandem with each other.

As the student population grew, an extension was built onto the Farranree school. This opened in 1986.

In 2023, North Presentation Secondary School became known as Nano Nagle College, a co-educational school with new T4 subjects and new ASD classes.

Following in the footsteps of Nano we continue to respond to the changing needs of our community.

School History

Nano Nagle College is a co-educational secondary school located in Farranree, a suburb in the north side of Cork city.

The Secondary School was originally situated in Gerald Griffin Street, Cork but, due to lack of space in this location a new school was built in Farranree in 1969.

north presentation secondary school

This meant that when students finished Primary School, they could continue with their education up to Intermediate Certificate Level.

The Teachers were National Teachers and the school was still under the Primary Branch of the Department of Education.

In 1960 the school became a full Secondary School under the Principal, Sr. Margaret Mary Galvin (Sr. Mairead). This school remained on Gerald Griffin Street up to the late 1960s. Due to the volume of students continuing on to second-level education, a new school had to be built in the large catchment area of Farranree. The Presentation Sisters had already established a Convent and girls Primary School on this site. Again, due to increasing numbers an extension had to be added to the existing secondary school building in Farranree. The official opening of the extension took place on March 24, 1986. Today, Presentation Secondary School, Farranree is fully opened to meet the demands of a modern and progressive education for the girls of the surrounding areas.

I n 2023, North Presentation Secondary School became known as Nano Nagle College, a co-educational school with new T4 subjects and new ASD classes. Following in the footsteps of Nano we continue to respond to the changing needs of our community.

North Presentation school 'disappointed' after St Vincent's pulls out of co-ed amalgamation

"It is with disappointment that we learned of the decision... to withdraw from the amalgamation process at this very late stage"

North Presentation Secondary School have said they are disappointed following the decision of the Religious Sisters of Charity to pull out of amalgamation process to form a co-ed school between North Pres and St Vincent's.

The merger of the two girls schools has been in the works since 2020, and in a statement released today, the Catholic Education of Irish Schools Trust (CEIST), the Patron of North Pres, said it is "with disappointment that we learned of the decision... to withdraw from the amalgamation process at this very late stage."

In October 2023, the Department of Education approved the merger for September which would have seen both northside secondary schools coming together and welcome both boys and girls. But following opposition from students and parents - Patron of the St Vincent's school, the Education Office of the Religious Sisters of Charity, said yesterday that "there is little hope of a successful amalgamation."

North Pres said: "Over the last few weeks, a great deal of misleading and false information has been put into the public domain. This has caused immense hurt and upset to the North Presentation School community.

"CEIST and the Presentation School Community have refrained from commenting to date out of respect for the process and the other parties involved and to avoid adding to the unrest in the local community."

North Pres will begin welcoming both boys and girls in the new school year. The school is holding it's open day for both boys and girls on November 17th and said "the school community looks forward to welcoming both girls and boys to participate in our newly expanding curriculum."

"Our staff and management at North Presentation have always dedicated themselves to meeting the needs of all students and parents in North Cork City and continue to be at the forefront in ensuring top-class education in a caring and welcoming and inclusive environment.

"We look forward to working with the school community as they embark on this new and very exciting chapter in the schools' history," the CEIST statement said.

Meanwhile, St Vincent's will remain an all-girls school.

Merger of two Cork city same-sex schools called off

In the school's statement yesterday, it said: "we have decided that we have no option but to withdraw from the process. This will result in St. Vincent's Secondary School remaining an all-girls school on the present site.

"We want to acknowledge - with regret - the potential impact this decision will have for the North Presentation Secondary School Community.

"St Vincent's has a very well-deserved reputation in terms of academic excellence and as a caring and nurturing school community. We believe that this is a lost opportunity for St Vincent's to be part of the development of a broad, inclusive and modern Post Primary facility in the North Cork City area on the 4.5 acres North Presentation site."

Cork TD Mick Barry said repealing the merger decision was "a victory."

He said: "RSOC tried to close the school and should run it no longer. The state has funded the school for years and now takes full ownership. Parents, teachers, and students have fought the closure. I will continue to argue for mixed education but today is a victory."

Merger of Cork City secondary schools called off following 'considerable opposition'

Merger of Cork City secondary schools called off following 'considerable opposition'

It was proposed that the new school would become co-educational, and based at the existing site of the North Presentation school in Faranree (pictured).

The planned amalgamation of two Cork City secondary schools has been called off following “considerable opposition”.

The proposed merger of St. Vincent's Secondary School and North Presentation Secondary School, on the north side of Cork city from next September has been called off, the schools’ trustees confirmed in a statement on the St Vincent's website this Thursday.

It follows calls from Taoiseach Micheál Martin, local TDs, parents and students to rethink the move, which had proposed the new school would become co-educational, and based at the existing site of the North Presentation school in Faranree.

However, parents had strongly objected to the plans, with students from St Vincent’s telling the Irish Examiner they had been left "heartbroken" and "completely blindsided” by the move to merge their school.

St Vincent’s will now remain an all-girls school at its present site, the Religious Sisters of Charity confirmed this Thursday.

It wanted to acknowledge “with regret the potential impact this decision will have for the North Presentation Secondary School.”

In light of significant opposition and "without the full cooperation of the board, staff and parents, we now believe there is little hope of successful amalgamation."

“Because of this, we have decided that we have no option but to withdraw from the process.”

St Vincent’s has a very well-deserved reputation in terms of academic excellence, the statement added.

“We believe that this is a lost opportunity for St Vincent’s to be part of the development of a broad, inclusive and modern post-primary facility in the North Cork City area.”

The trustees went on to thank those who took part in the year-long consultation about the future of Catholic education provision in the area.

“We particularly wish to thank the board staff and parents for the commitment to St Vincent's and we wish them well into the future.”

We do so in a way that is fun and meaningful for the children.

Working in partnership with parents, guardians and the wider school community is of the utmost importance to us. You as parents and guardians are the primary educators of your children, therefore we strive to have strong links between school and home.

2023-2024 Fundraising Campaign

We have been very fortunate in recent years to improve the learning and education experience in our school by means of fundraising. This year, the purchase of three new interactive whiteboards was identified by our staff and management team as a priority. We have two Clevertouch smart screens in our school already and these boards have had a hugely positive impact on the teaching and learning for these classes.

If you would like to make a small financial contribution to help us purchase three new screens, you can make a donation online at the following GoFundMe page.

School of Sanctuary

We are working towards becoming recognised as a School of Sanctuary!

A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that benefits everybody, especially families seeking sanctuary. It is a school that helps it students, staff, parents, and the wider community to understand what it means to be a refugee and to extend a welcome to everyone regardless of their immigration status. Schools of Sanctuary is not a project, nor a short-term school initiative. It is a culture that schools achieve over time to ensure everyone feels welcomed, safe, and included in the school and beyond.

It begins with 3 core principles: Learn, Take Action and Share.

North Port High School graduated its senior class during a ceremony at the school's football field on Thursday evening.

With more than 2,500 students, according to an estimate from U.S. News and World Report,  the school ranks as the seventh-best high school in Manatee County.

Michael Kent, an 18-year-old senior graduating from North Port High, plans to attend Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale on a pre-med track. Kent also plans to compete on NSU’s swim team.

During his time at North Port, Kent said his science classes with Sean Naeger stood out as an impactful class.

"Going into pre-med hopefully in college and then medical school, I think I going to need a lot of science background, of course. So that was big for me," he said.

Kent said he works at the Venice YMCA as a lifeguard and has helped teach children how to swim during the last two summers.
