PRESENTATION HIGH SCHOOL CHERIAL Siddipet Dist. – 506 223 – TS

The greatest wealth of a nation is neither its dams nor its industrial network, nor its atomic power, but a new generation of enlightened and educated young people. Education is the seed and root. Civilization is the fruit and flower. If the cultivator is discerning and sows good seed the community will gather wholesome grain and flourish. Our cultivator is the educator. Mother Marchesoli, the heroic role model of education of our congregation is our patroness. Our community is dedicated to the field of education since 1999.

Cherial is a Village Panchayat mandal in Siddipet district in the state of Telangana. It is 132 km away from Hyderabad city. As it is the case of any village, Cherial too is inhabited by the poor people and the whole village depends on agriculture. Cherial is a specimen for an Indian village with all its backwardness especially in education, hygiene and infrastructure and so on. But we, the sisters find meaning in working among these poor people. We are happy to find a great change the education brings in both the students as well parents over these fifteen years of our dedicated commitment.

Though we don’t have a separate house, we share one part of our convent for the stay of few students and teachers. It is a great help to the teachers and the students to remain in campus and spend their valuable time in a most productive manner.

Bestiality references allegedly made during presentation at Renmark High School

A sign that says "Renmark High School" above an LED screen with some school news.

Warning for readers: This article contains graphic language.

The South Australian Department for Education is investigating a presentation delivered to year 9 girls in a regional high school that allegedly referenced bestiality as being accepted by the LGBTQIA+ community.

Female students said teachers at Renmark High School told them to leave their lessons and attend a presentation in a separate classroom.

Students who attended the presentation on March 22 say two staff from the Headspace centre in the neighbouring town of Berri introduced a "third-party" presenter who facilitated an hour-long presentation focused on relationships.

Parents said they were not notified about the presentation, nor was it consented to.

Students said they were left unsupervised for the duration of the presentation.

Student Courtney White, 14, said she felt confused and blindsided by the presentation.

"We had a teacher that told us to grab a chair and sit in front of the board, and then the Headspace people came in and then [the teacher] left, so then we're sitting in front of a board alone with no teachers, just the Headspace people," she said.

"The first slide of the PowerPoint on the board was 'You can see queerly now' and 'No point hiding.'"

A mother wraps her arms around her daughter. Both look solemn.

Girls felt 'really uncomfortable'

Fourteen-year-old Emelia Wundenberg said the presenter was graphic when referencing their own sexual preferences and spoke in sexually explicit terms about growing up and being confused about whether they idolised people of the same gender or wanted to be intimate with them.

Students say they were then given an explanation of the initialism LGBTQIA+, with each word and its meaning displayed on the screen.

"There was a slide for what the 'plus' means, and they just started randomly saying words that no-one knew, like bestiality," Emelia said.

"It was on the board when they were showing what the 'plus' meant."

The students said bestiality was then explained in detail and the presenter seemed to imply it was something practised by people who identified as LGBTQIA+.

"They said [the queer community] just accepts all of it, even though … isn't it illegal?" Emelia said.

As the talk went on multiple girls, including Courtney, began to feel uncomfortable and asked to leave the classroom to "go to the bathroom".

"We're all just sitting there like, 'What the hell? What are we doing here? Why are we learning about animals having sex with humans?'" she said.

"It was really disgusting, it was really uncomfortable."

Emelia said many of those who asked to leave the classroom did not return.

When the ABC sought comment from the presenter a response was sent on the person's behalf asking that reporters refrained from reaching out or naming them in its coverage.

A small, dark-coloured building bearing the lettering "Renmark High School Administration".

'Normal procedure' not followed

Letters seen by the ABC that were sent to parents on behalf of Renmark High School principal Mat Evans stated that the presentation was meant to discuss "respectful relationships".

The letter acknowledged that the school's "normal procedure for notifying parents ahead of specific presentations was not followed".

Mr Evans said the third-party presenter had "been suspended from department schools while the department undertakes an investigation".

"We are undertaking an internal review to ensure that processes around such notifications and procedures with regard to third parties attending at our school are always met," he said.

The ABC contacted the Department for Education, which provided a similar statement and said the presentation was being investigated.

SA education department chief executive Martin Westwell said the presentation was "unacceptable" and "shouldn't have happened".

Speaking with ABC Radio Adelaide on Thursday, Professor Westwell said conversations about sexual health, societal norms, stereotypes and sexuality were normal parts of the Australian curriculum, but the presentation at Renmark High School was not.

"The core idea that students should understand sexuality and other sexualities is, I think, really important — but the way [the presenter] went about it was unacceptable," he said.

"The school has clearly made some mistakes.

"There should have been a teacher in the room when that occurred, but there wasn't and the principal has apologised for that.

"They hadn't reviewed the content.

"There was a few things that went wrong and it ended up with this inappropriate language and a few things being discussed in that session that were just not appropriate."

Support being provided to students

Headspace's national head of clinical leadership Nicola Palfrey said the organisation was aware of concerns raised by members of the Renmark community.

"We take all feedback very seriously and are reviewing how we can support and guide Headspace centres … to ensure presentations they facilitate or deliver are aligned with evidence and best practice and are safe and appropriate for young people," she said.

FocusOne Health Board chair Ian Gartley said the "focus at Headspace Berri, operated under licence by FocusOne Health, is on the mental health and wellbeing of young people".

"We are aware of concerns raised by local members of the Renmark community following a presentation delivered by a lived experience speaker that Headspace Berri facilitated at Renmark High School," he said.

"Our priority right now is ensuring that any young people and their families who may be experiencing distress receive the support they need."

All parties involved in the alleged incident declined to provide the presentation to the ABC.

Following the presentation, a follow-up letter seen by the ABC was sent to parents offering counselling services from the education department, which had arranged a social worker to attend the school to help support affected students.

A teenager and her mother, both dark-haired, stand outside, looking solemn.

Parents express shock and outrage

Parents of students who attended the presentation said it was a poor representation of the queer community and had raised many concerns about the school's protocols for third-party presentations.

"Who vetted this material? Who made sure it was safe for 14- and 15-year-old girls? Some of them are still 13," Emelia's mother Kristy Fyfe said.

"It has done a huge disservice to the [queer] community."

Following the presentation, Courtney's mother Nicki Gaylard removed her three children from Renmark High School.

"My kids are in limbo," she said.

"They're not in an education department at this point.

"I'm not putting them anywhere until I know this won't happen again.

"Under no circumstances should a child in that school ever feel trapped and unsafe without someone with their certificate, meaning a teacher."

The ABC has spoken to five other parents whose children attended the presentation.

They substantiated the two girls' claims.

Two people with short dark hair smiling. They are both wearing dark T-shirts that says "Let's Talk About X".

LGBTQIA+ educators condemn 'slur'

Sexuality educators and LGBTQIA+ inclusion advocates Mel Brush and Eleonora Bertsa-Fuchs conduct consent and queer inclusion training for schools, parents and workplaces via their social enterprise Let's Talk About X.

Both are secondary teachers and Mx Bertsa-Fuchs said queer education was important but should be delivered in a safe and appropriate setting.

"The teachers are the people that these young people have a relationship with, that they are familiar with, that they're comfortable with," Mx Bertsa-Fuchs said.

"When you're in a vulnerable situation, like a respectful relationships workshop or seminar, there should be someone in the room that you are familiar with."

Mx Brush said the alleged use of the word bestiality in the presentation was damaging to the queer community.

"It's pretty shocking to think about that term being thrown around like that, especially given how loaded it is, and for a historical context of the way that it's been used as a slur and to discriminate against LGBT+ people," Mx Brush said.

North Shelby High School holds drunk driving docudrama

SHELBYVILLE, Mo. (WGEM) - North Shelby High School hosted a drunk driving docudrama Monday afternoon to highlight the importance of not drinking and driving.

Monday’s scripted event featured a drunk driving accident that demonstrated the possible consequences.

Students from all grades gathered to see the importance of safe driving.

The skit was a part of North Shelby’s Traction Group, an award winning program that promotes the dangers of drunk driving as well as focusing on the importance of safe driving.

“I like how it gets the point across to children, it’s a big deal and especially in a small community like Shelby County. It really gets the point across to kids. A lot of kids cry and personally, I have a lot of emotions and stuff while I was doing this, it’s a big deal. I’m glad we do it,” said North Shelby senior Chloe Capps.

Monday’s docudrama comes just in time for prom season.

As of 2023, 17% of all road fatalities occurred from impaired driving, according to MODOT.

GSDM Student-Driven Project Targets Educating Underrepresented High School Students about Various Dental Professions

presentation high school perinthalmanna

From dental office manager to dental hygienist, there is a career option for everyone within the oral healthcare field. Despite the many possibilities—and growing demand across the field—relatively few young people from diverse backgrounds enter the dental profession.

Dr. Michelle Henshaw SPH 96 DPH 07, GSDM associate dean of global & population health, said high school students from diverse backgrounds need more exposure to various dental career opportunities before they need to plan their educational paths.

“We have such a huge inequity in the racial and ethnic distribution in the [oral] health profession and part of it is potentially [lack of] awareness and not understanding the different options that are available and making it seem accessible to people,” Henshaw said.

Since 2020, Henshaw has been working with oral healthcare students to develop an online presentation aimed at high school student populations that are historically underrepresented in the dental profession.

Torera Aina DMD 24 is helping finalize the interactive multimedia presentation as a continuation of her Global Applied Professional Experience (APEX), a program four-year DMD students at GSDM do in their first year that allows them to integrate classroom study with professional experiences as interns in dental offices. Aina elected to spend additional time working on a global project related to oral health promotion or access to care.

Once the presentation is completed, Henshaw said they plan to make all materials available to high schools nationwide and to work with local organizations to provide in-person informational sessions and mentorship programs.

“Our hope is to make it available for not just GSDM to use, but for people nationwide to use if they want to go into high schools or for high school counselors to use, really anyone to raise awareness about the dental professions,” Henshaw said. “There were surprisingly few very well-done introductions to the dental professions online. There were some that were specific for dentists and some that were specific for hygienists, but nothing that we could find that really did such a comprehensive review of the dental professions.”

The project began as a capstone project that Melissa Hebert–now a dental hygienist at BU Dental Health Center–was completing, under Henshaw’s mentorship, for her dental hygiene degree at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene.

Hebert researched the relationship between underserved populations in the greater Boston area and their dental health. Many individuals within this population did not have regular dental appointments–and Hebert found that the select few who did see the dentist regularly tended to have visits with providers whose backgrounds did not mirror their own.

There are various benefits to a patient seeing dental professionals with a similar background, including a greater sense of comfort and trust, which can help them develop better personal oral healthcare habits. One way to help build a more diverse dental field is by encouraging young people of all backgrounds to enter the dental profession, Hebert said.

In Hebert’s preliminary PowerPoint presentation, she discussed several oral healthcare careers, in the hopes of educating students on the need for dental healthcare and the various roles they can be involved in. She said she wants the final presentation to spark inspiration in students, showing that not only do they belong in the dental profession, but they are also needed.

“It’s not a universal experience to go to the dentist every six months for a lot of people and it’s not a universal experience for them to know who the hygienist is and who the dentist is and who the dental assistant is,” Hebert said. “In choosing a career, which I think we put on children and students so young, it’s just awesome for them to realize this could be an opportunity for growth and it could be a job that I would really love and want to do–if they knew about it.”

Aina took the initial draft started by Hebert and expanded on it by adding multimedia elements. As part of this work, Aina spoke to current high school students, filmed in-person presentations, and sought feedback from GSDM faculty and staff.

In July 2023, Aina was joined by Stephen Carpinito CAS 18 CAMED 19 DMD 24 to talk to high school students.

During the talk, Aina showed students the current percentage of dentists from every ethnicity, emphasizing how the dental field needs diversity. After discussing dental career opportunities and their personal experiences, Aina and Carpinito led a hands-on activity teaching the students how to conduct an oral cancer screening.

“We try to make the presentation as enlightening and as fun as possible,” Aina said. “If you’re someone that loves working with your hands, in this field, you can use your hands a lot. It just made everyone think ‘Oh, okay, this is fun. I can do stuff. I can place the sealant. I can move around and do oral cancer screening.’”

It was rewarding to see students become engaged and excited by the hands-on activity, the pair said. Carpinito noted that students were coming up to him immediately after the presentation and saying they wanted to enter the dental field because of them.

“There were students right then and there giving us live feedback saying, ‘We’re interested,’” Carpinito said. “They said it opened their eyes…It was really rewarding to see that with the students.”

Carpinito said he was enthusiastic about helping Aina as he had experience working at the front desk at a dental office and as a dental assistant before he started at GSDM. The dental assistant role is stereotypically “female,” but Carpinito, as someone who identifies as male, wanted to share that jobs aren’t gendered–and that diversity is needed in all aspects of dentistry.

“I was able to talk personally about the stories I had and help them get an understanding about what exactly the tasks were involved with that,” Carpinito said.

In January 2024, Aina asked GSDM faculty and staff to record a brief message about why they love being a part of the dental profession and encouraging students to do the same. These videos will be added to the presentation along with the content from July 2023.

“The videos and photos will be impactful to the high school students because when they look at the photos and videos, they will see real people they can aspire to be,” Aina said. “Real people who were once in their shoes and real people who can perhaps serve as a mentor one day.”

Individuals do not necessarily need decades of education to work in the dental industry, but they do need an educational plan, Henshaw said. Exposing students from all backgrounds to options in the dental profession early in their education gives those students an opportunity to develop (or revise) their educational plans and may lead to an increase in the diversity of the dental profession.

“We know that people seeking treatment for dental care in general are much more likely to be comfortable and to continue treatment if they are seeking care from someone who is like them, whatever that means to them,” Henshaw said. “By diversifying the workforce, it’s another way to try and address inequities in access to care.”

SLU ASBMB Hosts High School Research Symposium

The SLU American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Chapter organized its second High School Research Symposium Outreach Event on Saturday, April 6. This event attempts to merge research and presentation experience to help provide high school students in the St. Louis area with exposure to the scientific experimentation process.

Fifteen students from four different high schools in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area were selected and constructed either a literature review or a compilation of lab work with which they are currently involved. At the conclusion of their project, each student created an abstract, a scientific poster, and a slide presentation.

From left are Layton Pfeuffer (Saint Louis University High School), Sophie Burgoon (Visitation Academy), Lauren Cleary (Visitation Academy), Mary Stein (Visitation Academy), Allison Kowalczyk (Visitation Academy), Hannah Houseworth (Visitation Academy), Josephine Janisch (Visitation Academy), Lillian Carlin (Visitation Academy), Amisha Poojari (MICDS), Abhinav Katyal (MICDS), Arjun Puri (MICDS), Sanjana Gandhi (MICDS), Emma Carcamo (Marquette High School), Charlie Dougherty (Saint Louis University High School), and Vincent Ly (Saint Louis University High School).

Submitted photo.

On the day of the symposium, each student presented their scientific research for seven to eight minutes, followed by a question session by SLU faculty, other students, and high school faculty members.

There was a panel of judges evaluating the presentations on scientific content and data analysis, similar to a collegiate-level presentation. The faculty judges consisted of SLU Medical Sciences professors Uthayashanker Ezekiel, Ph.D., and Rita Heuertz, Ph.D., and student judges were ASBMB E-board members Vaishnavi Srirama, Ether Dharmesh, Jessica Michael, Ashwin Pillai, Angela Lee, and Leah Keswani.

Cash prizes and SLU merchandise were given to the top three presenters and honorary mention students.

The following students received awards:

  • First place: Amisha Poojari (MICDS)
  • Second place: Arjun Puri (MICDS)
  • Third place: Abhinav Katyal (MICDS)
  • Honorable Mention: Charles Dougherty (Saint Louis University High School) and Hannah Houseworth (Visitation Academy)

The presentation session was followed by a tour of south campus, including the Doisy Research Center, Allied Health Building laboratory spaces, and cancer research and microbiology labs of Ezekiel and Heuertz.

The SLU ASBMB High School Research Symposium was first started in the spring of 2023 by the current chapter president, Vaishnavi Srirama. As a high school student, Srirama completed a similar program, which she attributes as life-changing to her interests and career goal as a physician-scientist. She wanted to start a similar event through ASBMB to impact the science community and provide mentorship to students through the lens of scientific outreach.

Since the first symposium in 2023, Srirama, Jessica Michael, and Ashwin Pillai have written and received an outreach grant of $500 from ASBMB in support of the event. At the recent 2024 Discover BMB national conference, the SLU Chapter of ASBMB was awarded an Honorary Mention for being the best ASBMB chapter in the country, and Srirama presented a poster about the 2023 outreach event outcomes and impact.

Furthermore, the ASBMB High School Research Symposium has created a large local impact as well. One of the faculty members at Visitation Academy, Laurie Blanner, started a new research course and pathway in her school’s curriculum. She also networked with another faculty from Saint Louis University High School, Tim O’Keefe, whom she met at the 2023 SLU ASBMB Research Symposium, to create a Neuroscience competition between their two high schools.

Organizers for the event were:

  • ASBMB Executive Board President: Vaishnavi Srirama
  • Vice President: Jessica Michael
  • Vice President of Event: Ether Dharmesh
  • Secretary: Matthew Dovalovsky
  • Treasurer: Leah Keswani
  • Public Relations: Angela Lee
  • Historian: Ashwin Pillai
  • Faculty Advisor: Uthayashanker Ezekiel, Ph.D.
