Net Zero Precincts Stage 2: Agenda-setting

Net Zero Precincts is a four-year Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage project that brings together two key areas of research for the first time — transition management and design anthropology — to develop a new interdisciplinary approach to transitioning urban environments to net zero. The project uses the Monash University Clayton Campus and Monash Technology Precinct as an action-oriented Living Lab to experiment, test and learn in a real-world setting.

The project aims to develop and validate a new and transferrable approach for net-zero transitions informed by the real-life experiences of the precinct community and its businesses, government, knowledge sector and civil society actors. As such, it will provide significant benefits to organisations and individuals seeking to engage with and learn from everyday people about community needs and aspirations in accelerating urban transitions.

This report shares details of the interdisciplinary methods developed for Stage 2 of the Net Zero Precincts ARC Linkage project to answer the following question: How can the precinct community envision pathways to net zero precinct futures together in a way that balances net zero emissions with the everyday social, political and experiential realities of the community?

This report presents an overview of the envisioning process through five workshops with over 50 participants connected to Monash University Clayton Campus and the Monash Technology Precinct from July 2023 to March 2024. The workshops were designed to enable research participants to reflect on the ethnographic insights from Stage 1, experience transitions-in-the-making through embodied learning, understand transition dynamics and co-create diverse and inclusive future visions and pathways.

This report takes the essential step in establishing how to explore and understand the concepts and practices of design anthropology which both complicates and creates new possibilities for transition management and the creation of net zero futures.

Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (Malaysia Node), MSCA Global Postdoctoral Fellowship: Call for First-Stage Applications

research projects monash university

Job Information

Offer description.

The Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (MCCCRH) investigates how to support effective communication to adapt to a changing climate and implement climate solutions. MCCCRH comprises experts from across the Monash University campuses in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Italy, ensuring local knowledge and global reach.

The MCCCRH Malaysia Node was established in 2021 and sits within the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) at Monash University Malaysia. The node researches public attitudes towards climate change, and ways to better communicate the science and solutions, with a geographical focus on Southeast Asia.

The MCCCRH Malaysia Node is calling for first-stage applications from postdoctoral scholars who wish to be based at the node as part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MCSA) Global Postdoctoral Fellowship , funded by Horizon Europe.

The MSCA Global Postdoctoral Fellowship allows European nationals or long-term residents to engage in research projects with organisations outside EU Member States and Horizon Europe Associated Countries. These fellowships require an outgoing phase of 12 to 24 months in a non-associated Third Country , such as Malaysia, and a mandatory 12-month return phase to a host organisation based in an EU member state or a Horizon Europe Associated Country .

See here for a current list of non-associated Third Countries (“Other Third Countries”) that can host the outgoing phase, and Horizon Europe Associated Countries (“Third Countries Associated with Horizon Europe”) that, along with EU member states, can host the return phase.

The MCCCRH Malaysia Node welcomes applications from eligible researchers who wish to be based at the Node for 12 to 24 months in the outgoing phase. You must be in possession of a PhD and have a maximum of 8 years’ full-time equivalent (FTE) experience in research from the date of award of your PhD.

We welcome applications for research in the following areas, with an emphasis on Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia. Comparative studies of these issues between Malaysia and the applicant’s host organisation country are especially welcome:

  • the relationship between climate change communication and climate action
  • public perceptions of climate change as an enabler of or barrier to climate action
  • climate and health literacy, including mental health
  • narrative and literary expressions of climate change, e.g. climate stories, climate fiction, and climate poetry

In the first instance, the application is in the form of an Expression of Interest , which includes:

copy of PhD certificate

research proposal (max. 1000 words) outlining the research project and timeline with details of time to be spent on the outgoing and return phases

evidence (in the form of a letter of support on official letterhead) of willingness from a research or higher education organisation based in an EU member state or a Horizon Europe Associated Country to be a host organisation for the return phase

  • the names of two referees (at least one should be from an organisation other than your proposed host organisation)

The deadline is 21 June 2024 .

Following this first stage, the MCCCRH Malaysia Node will work with successful applicants and their host organisation to prepare an application to the MSCA Post-doctoral Fellowship scheme by 11 September 2024. Please note that we cannot guarantee successful first-stage applicants that they will then be successful in the MCSA Global Fellowship selection process.

See here for more information on the MCCCRH and the Malaysia Node .

India-Australia Alliance: Critical Minerals Research Hub Approved

research projects monash university

Hyderabad: In a move towards establishing a sustainable global supply chain for critical minerals, the Union education ministry approved a joint initiative between Monash University and IIT Hyderabad on Saturday. The Australia-India Critical Minerals Research Hub (AICMRH) aims to enhance research and development in the extraction and processing of critical minerals, focusing on sustainable practices and supply chain analyses, an official press statement said.

The education ministr, in collaboration with the Centre, has formed the empowered committee for industry and international collaborations (ECIIC). Among the 12 themes identified by the ECIIC, critical minerals have been highlighted as a priority, with IIT Hyderabad chosen to spearhead the nation’s efforts in this domain.

The initiative is supported by a proposal from the Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres (SPARC), jointly led by IIT Hyderabad and Monash University. The project, which brings together various Indian and Australian universities, R&D labs, and industries, has recently received MoE approval along with funding of $1.15 million. This initiative is poised to bolster India-Australia collaborations in the field of critical minerals.
