Course type
The MA in STEM Education welcomes students seeking the knowledge and skills to drive educational change in response to our increasingly technological and science-rich world. The MA in STEM will provide a national, international and practically-oriented understanding of the ways in which core debates across formal and informal STEM education can shape responses to pressing social and environmental questions. National and international interest in encouraging STEM subject uptake and career pathways has increased over the last decade, driven by concerns about the shortfalls in filling technical and professional roles across a range of engineering, science and technology related sectors. These concerns are further amplified when we consider the skills likely to be needed by future generations in an increasingly technological society and to address the challenges of environmental sustainability. Whilst urgent, the response required is complex, necessitating an understanding of international education systems, the separate STEM subjects, including their shared elements and processes as well as their distinctive features, policy directives, new pedagogical approaches such as project-based learning, computational thinking and the variety of STEM-related contexts.
Course detail
Our programme is designed to provide students with an advanced and comprehensive understanding of key contemporary debates concerning STEM-related education, including policy, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment issues alongside global concerns about equity, social justice, economic growth, climate change and sustainability. It provides both an international and national focus, looking at both formal educational systems and the wider context of education. There is a strong emphasis on critiquing research literatures and policy documents and developing first-hand knowledge of research methodologies. The programme encourages collaborative working, building professional networks and asking research questions pertinent to your own contexts and challenges.
Teaching and assessment
Our teaching approach is underpinned by a philosophy of participation and collaboration. You will be expected and supported to complete a significant amount of guided self-study alongside working collectively with peers and your teachers. Learning modes used are planned to offer students variety and flexibility in their study, ensuring students can align their projects with their personal interests and commitments. A variety of modes of assessment are used to support and assess your academic progress and to help you develop other capabilities that are valued in educational settings. 30-credits modules will be assessed through modes including: traditional academic essays (2,000-6,000 words), mixed-media presentations, personal learning diaries and designing and making artefacts/models. The dissertation module assessment will be assessed on a 16,000-word dissertation. High quality formative assessment and feedback is used across the programme to reinforce your learning and development.

World News | 2 military horses in serious condition after running loose through London
Two of the military horses that got loose and ran through central London on Wednesday are in “serious condition,” according to British officials.
The British Army on Thursday shared an update on social media, noting that the trio of Household Cavalry soldiers who had been thrown from their saddles “are expected to recover fully and to return to duty.”
“Of the seven horses which were spooked, five tried to bolt and four — Vida, Trojan, Quaker and Tennyson — broke loose ,” the statement continued.
The Army added that two of the horses injured underwent operations Wednesday night, “with one transferred to an equine hospital,” adding that all are “being closely observed.”
“Our horses receive the highest standards of care, and those that did not undergo surgery are expected to return to duty in due course,” the British Army said. “We want to thank everyone who has shown such kindness and concern towards our soldiers and horses. We will provide more updates soon.”
The incident reportedly started when construction materials were dropped next to the animals as they were rehearsing for The King’s Birthday Parade , also known as Trooping the Colour , which occurs every June and involves 200 horses and 1,400 military members.
The scared horses then bolted through the streets, running into a double-decker bus, a taxi and other vehicles , reported the BBC.
The BBC said that in addition to the soldiers’ non-life-threatening injuries, a civilian on a bicycle had also been hospitalized due to the incident.
“All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp,” an official told the outlet on Wednesday, noting that “a number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

Courses and qualifications for pharmacists
The MPharm degree is offered at several universities in the UK. This is the first part of the route to registration if you want to become a pharmacist.
If you’ve qualified as a pharmacist outside of the European Economic Area, you can do a postgraduate diploma (known as an Overseas Pharmacist Assessment Programme or OSPAP) as the first part of the route to UK registration.
An accredited degree or postgraduate programme combines science and practice and equips students with the theoretical knowledge, professional behaviours and clinical skills needed to become a pharmacist.
There are a number of different course formats. Click on the tabs below to find out more about each option.
Related content
Four-year mpharm, preparatory year plus mpharm, foundation degree plus mpharm, five-year integrated programme.
A full time degree course which is usually completed in four years. This is the most frequent type of course offered.
You must successfully complete the course to start foundation training.
Entry requirements
The entry requirements for our accredited MPharm degrees vary between universities. As a guide, most universities will expect you to have an A or B grade in A-level chemistry and two further A-levels in either biology, mathematics or physics. If you have A-levels in chemistry and biology, you may also be considered with an alternative third subject.
The entry requirements are set by the individual university offering the MPharm degree. Universities may accept equivalent qualifications, other than A-levels, including qualifications gained outside of the UK. Universities may also set other entry requirements for the course.
If you’d like to pursue a career as a pharmacist but don’t have the required A-level grades or subjects, you can consider doing one of our accredited foundation degrees as an alternative route to enter an MPharm degree.
A five-year MPharm degree programme with a preparatory year, sometimes referred to as a foundation year, or ‘year 0’, followed by the usual four years MPharm.
You must complete the programme successfully to start foundation training.
A two-year MPharm foundation degree leading to direct entry into Year 2 of an four-year accredited MPharm degree programme, which would take a total of five years.
Doing a foundation degree
If you want to pursue a career in pharmacy but don’t have the required qualifications to be accepted onto an MPharm degree, you can apply to do a pharmacy foundation degree.
This is a two-year full-time course which includes the content of the first year of an MPharm degree combined with work experience placements. The foundation degree aims to give students the appropriate knowledge and experience to allow them to apply to enter Year Two of an accredited MPharm degree. It’s important to understand that doing a foundation degree doesn’t guarantee a place on an MPharm degree.
Foundation degree entry requirements
To see a list of accepted qualifications for entry to the foundation degree, please visit the websites of the course providers.
A five-year integrated MPharm degree programme which includes both the degree qualification and foundation training year.
If you’d like to pursue a career as a pharmacist but don’t have the required A-level grades or subjects, you can consider doing one of our accredited foundation degrees as an alternative route to enter an MPharm degree.
Currently, one School of Pharmacy offers an accredited MPharm programme which is taught in part overseas at a partner university. This programme is called an MPharm 2+2.
Students on an MPharm programme study at the overseas partner university for the first two years and join the UK MPharm course for Years Three and Four.
Students who graduate from the accredited MPharm 2+2 are eligible to enter the foundation year training in the UK.
This means they can then follow the UK route to registration allowing them to practise as a pharmacist in the UK.
Applicants applying for the overseas MPharm degree must apply through the overseas partner’s application process and not through UCAS. Visit the website of the partner university for details of entry requirements.
If you’ve qualified as a pharmacist outside of the European Economic Area, you can do a postgraduate diploma as the first part of the route to UK registration.
The Overseas Pharmacists’ Assessment Programme (OSPAP) is a one-year course that prepares people who have qualified overseas to practise in the UK and do the foundation training.
The OSPAP course is available to people who hold a pharmacy qualification from overseas and are registered, or eligible to register, as pharmacists in their country of qualification.
