Web of Science ResearcherID

A Web of Science ResearcherID is a unique identifier that differentiates researchers in the Web of Science.

What has a ResearcherID?

Any algorithmically generated author record in the Web of Science Core Collection.

Any Web of Science researcher profile

Having a ResearcherID does not mean that the author record has been claimed by the researcher. Researchers can claim author records that have not already been claimed by someone else, or add publications in an author record to an existing claimed researcher profile.

Web of Science ResearcherID provides the global research community with an invaluable index of author information. Web of Science Group products (Web of Science, InCites, EndNote) use a Web of Science ResearcherID to match and disambiguate researchers across products.

Having a Web of Science ResearcherID helps:

  • solve author identity issues
  • ensure correct attribution between you and your publications on the Web of Science
  • add dynamic citation metrics from the Web of Science Core Collection and other missing metadata to publication records on your Publons profile, Web of Science , InCites, etc.
  • effortlessly keep your ORCID up to date by linking it to your Web of Science ResearcherID on Publons

Author Identifiers Table

Expand the  Authors Identifiers  table on any article record to view the list of researchers who have claimed a publication using their Web of Science ResearcherID or ORCID identifiers.

The table includes:

If available, the Web of Science ResearcherID of all authors who have claimed the publication as part of their Web of Science researcher profile.

  • If available, the ORCID of all authors currently associated with the publication.

Web of Science Researcher Profile Overview

Web of Science Guide

History of Author Profiles in Web of Science

Many researchers are familiar with ResearcherID or Publons. In April of 2019, Clarivate integrated ResearcherID into Publons. All previously existing ResearcherIDs were merged with their Publons profiles, allowing users to keep all their publications and metrics together. New Publons users will be assigned a ResearcherID as a unique identifier. In August 2022, Publons was full merged into the Web of Science Platform and renamed the Web of Science Researcher Profile.

A full history of author profiles in Web of Science is available here .

Open Researcher and Contributor ID  (Iaunched in June 2010) aims at creating a central registry of persistent author identifiers and at integrating research output to the contributor ID.

Registration is free. A step by step guide to registering is available. ORCID allows easy import of works from ResearcherID . Privacy setting (public, trusted parties, only me) is controlled by the individual.

Benefits of setting up an ORCID ID to researchers:

  • Eliminate name ambiguity
  • Maintain a single ID for manuscript submissions, grant applications, data set depositions
  • Improve discoverability of your research
  • Get updates and credit for your work.

ORCID has partnerships with many publishers and organizations.  See a list of ORCID Member organizations including research organizations, publishers, funders, professional associations, and other stakeholders in the research ecosystem.

ORCID FAQ

Video Tutorials

We recommend that authors create an ORCID ID and then check their profiles in ResearcherID (Web of Science), Google Scholar Citations, and Microsoft Academic Search.

Here are a few of the publishers requiring ORCID ID:

  • The Royal Society
  • American Geophysical Union
  • Science journals
  • Complete List of Publishers

ResearcherID  is a precedent of ORCID launched in January 2008 by Thomson Reuters (Web of Science) as a solution for author disambiguation. Its registry has over 270,000 profiles. All public ResearchIDs were moved to Publons in April 2019.

Each ResearcherID member is assigned a unique identifier to enable the researcher to:

  • avoid author variant issues,
  • assemble your publication lists,
  • track your citation counts and h-index ,
  • identify potential collaborators.

Because ResearcherID integrates with Web of Science  and EndNote Web, you can claim your publications easily. These publications will then automatically be updated within Web of Science, making content you have produced attributable to you.

Additionally, ResearcherID  is compliant with ORCID, allowing users to link to their ORCID profiles and to associate publications from  Web of Science  to ORCID profiles.

Registration   for ResearcherID is free. Privacy settings for the ResearcherID profile are controlled by the individual.

ResearchID FAQ

  • Web of Science Web of Science includes three databases: Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. It indexes over 12,000 journals and 120,000 conference proceedings with the strongest coverage in the sciences (over 8,500 journals), followed by social sciences (over 3,000 journals), and arts and humanities (over 1,700 fully indexed journals). Our Web of Science subscription includes articles published from 1987 to the present; updated weekly. For impact factor information about specific journals use Journal Citation Reports.

Google Scholar Citations automatically calculate three metrics: h-index, i10-index and the total number of citations.

i10-Index indicates the number of publications with at least 10 citations (introduced by Google Scholar in July 2011).

Privacy settings for the Google Scholar profile are controlled by the individual. Making it  public  will appear in Google Scholar search results.
