I was in class twelve, and at that time, lockdowns happened all over India. My school got closed, and teachers started taking online classes. From grade twelve on, I started taking online classes from a school teacher. After doing online classes for two months, I started understanding all my doubts correctly.

Afterwards, I started taking online classes in different subjects. Online courses save my time and money also because, due to online classes, I don't have to pay for travel and can also study from different teachers. The Internet brought a revolution to education. Due to online education, students can learn anywhere.

5 Minute Speech on Online Class in English for Students

Online classes have become very popular, especially after the outbreak of Covid 19 which has limited social interactions to a great extent. People were not able to interact with one another because these interactions may give rise to more COVID cases. Because of this, many schools, colleges, and institutions developed online classes for about two to three years. Online classes were there before the COVID, however, with the rise of COVID-19, online classes became more popular. For some people, it benefitted them greatly as they focused better with fewer interactions which seemed to be a sort of distraction for them, and they were able to cope better with the activities and lessons as they felt more comfortable in their zone. Students were able to learn new activities, new interests, and hobbies as well. However, for the other half, we could see how distracted online classes were for them. It brought rise to more class bunking and many other problems. Students were seen as less interested in everything they did, and this brought a rise in many health problems. Depression and anxiety increased in many lives of the students, cyberbullying increased and there were many suicidal cases as well. 

Everyone has their own opinion based on this but all in all, it taught the students more about themselves and promoted family bonding time as well. Parents were able to learn more about their children. Online classes also paved the way for better relationships between parents and students as well. It is during this time that people especially parents could appreciate the efforts of the teachers.

Since more and more individuals are using the internet to better their education, online education has grown in popularity. There are numerous advantages to online learning, such as the freedom to attend classes from any location and the chance to enrol in courses that might not be available locally. Additionally, compared to traditional in-person programmes, online education can sometimes be more affordable.

The flexibility that online education provides is one of its major benefits. No matter what time of day, whether early in the morning or late at night, students are free to attend class. Adults who are working or have family responsibilities who might not be able to attend typical programmes during traditional hours would particularly benefit from this.

The opportunity to enrol in courses that may not be available locally is another advantage of online education. Students now have access to a wide range of educational possibilities, regardless of where they reside. Additionally, compared to conventional in-person sessions, online education might be more affordable.

Online learning does, however, have certain disadvantages. The absence of direct connection with professors and students is one of the main obstacles. Further students are not aware to use the online devices . It may be challenging to remain motivated and interested in the subject matter as a result. In order to stay up with the curriculum, online schools frequently call for a high level of self-motivation and discipline.

Online learning has many advantages and is a fantastic alternative for many students, but it also needs a lot of self-discipline and drive. Before making a choice, it’s crucial to assess the benefits and drawbacks of online learning and to be sure that it is the best option for your requirements and learning preferences.

– It makes high-quality material available to everyone, wherever they are.

– The student may enrol in any course at any time, making it convenient.

– The information is constantly current.

People may study without being in the same physical area through online education. It may be done from any location with internet connectivity and serves as an alternative to conventional classroom-based education. Flexibility, convenience, and a broad selection of course options are all advantages of online education. However, there are also certain drawbacks to online learning.

Some students could have problems with the social components of studying or grasping the subject matter because they aren’t getting immediate feedback from their instructors or peers. Additionally, individuals could have a sense of loneliness or despair as a result of feeling alone while they are studying.

How Effective Is Online Learning? What the Research Does and Doesn’t Tell Us

The times have dictated school closings and the rapid expansion of online education. Can online lessons replace in-school time?

Clearly online time cannot provide many of the informal social interactions students have at school, but how will online courses do in terms of moving student learning forward? Research to date gives us some clues and also points us to what we could be doing to support students who are most likely to struggle in the online setting.

The use of virtual courses among K-12 students has grown rapidly in recent years. Florida, for example, requires all high school students to take at least one online course. Online learning can take a number of different forms. Often people think of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, where thousands of students watch a video online and fill out questionnaires or take exams based on those lectures.

In the online setting, students may have more distractions and less oversight, which can reduce their motivation.

Most online courses, however, particularly those serving K-12 students, have a format much more similar to in-person courses. The teacher helps to run virtual discussion among the students, assigns homework, and follows up with individual students. Sometimes these courses are synchronous (teachers and students all meet at the same time) and sometimes they are asynchronous (non-concurrent). In both cases, the teacher is supposed to provide opportunities for students to engage thoughtfully with subject matter, and students, in most cases, are required to interact with each other virtually.

Coronavirus and Schools

Online courses provide opportunities for students. Students in a school that doesn’t offer statistics classes may be able to learn statistics with virtual lessons. If students fail algebra, they may be able to catch up during evenings or summer using online classes, and not disrupt their math trajectory at school. So, almost certainly, online classes sometimes benefit students.

In comparisons of online and in-person classes, however, online classes aren’t as effective as in-person classes for most students. Only a little research has assessed the effects of online lessons for elementary and high school students, and even less has used the “gold standard” method of comparing the results for students assigned randomly to online or in-person courses. Jessica Heppen and colleagues at the American Institutes for Research and the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research randomly assigned students who had failed second semester Algebra I to either face-to-face or online credit recovery courses over the summer. Students’ credit-recovery success rates and algebra test scores were lower in the online setting. Students assigned to the online option also rated their class as more difficult than did their peers assigned to the face-to-face option.

Most of the research on online courses for K-12 students has used large-scale administrative data, looking at otherwise similar students in the two settings. One of these studies, by June Ahn of New York University and Andrew McEachin of the RAND Corp., examined Ohio charter schools; I did another with colleagues looking at Florida public school coursework. Both studies found evidence that online coursetaking was less effective.

It is not surprising that in-person courses are, on average, more effective. Being in person with teachers and other students creates social pressures and benefits that can help motivate students to engage. Some students do as well in online courses as in in-person courses, some may actually do better, but, on average, students do worse in the online setting, and this is particularly true for students with weaker academic backgrounds.

Students who struggle in in-person classes are likely to struggle even more online. While the research on virtual schools in K-12 education doesn’t address these differences directly, a study of college students that I worked on with Stanford colleagues found very little difference in learning for high-performing students in the online and in-person settings. On the other hand, lower performing students performed meaningfully worse in online courses than in in-person courses.

But just because students who struggle in in-person classes are even more likely to struggle online doesn’t mean that’s inevitable. Online teachers will need to consider the needs of less-engaged students and work to engage them. Online courses might be made to work for these students on average, even if they have not in the past.

Just like in brick-and-mortar classrooms, online courses need a strong curriculum and strong pedagogical practices. Teachers need to understand what students know and what they don’t know, as well as how to help them learn new material. What is different in the online setting is that students may have more distractions and less oversight, which can reduce their motivation. The teacher will need to set norms for engagement—such as requiring students to regularly ask questions and respond to their peers—that are different than the norms in the in-person setting.

Online courses are generally not as effective as in-person classes, but they are certainly better than no classes. A substantial research base developed by Karl Alexander at Johns Hopkins University and many others shows that students, especially students with fewer resources at home, learn less when they are not in school. Right now, virtual courses are allowing students to access lessons and exercises and interact with teachers in ways that would have been impossible if an epidemic had closed schools even a decade or two earlier. So we may be skeptical of online learning, but it is also time to embrace and improve it.

How to Encourage Students to Speak Up in Virtual Classes

A s so many of us have experienced, it’s easy to fly under the radar and lose your voice in synchronous online settings. Since many classrooms are back online as Omicron surges around the world, we could all use a refresher on how to draw out meaningful dialogue from online participants—whether in a classroom or an office setting.

Our colleagues at Harvard Business Review recently addressed how to improve virtual meetings in the workplace in an article by Joel Schwartzberg . We found his advice fitting for virtual learning as well. By simply swapping out the words “virtual meetings” and “workplace” for “virtual classrooms” and “academic,” we think you’ll see what we mean. We’ve also provided some brief commentary along the way to directly relate his guidance to academia.

There’s no question that virtual meetings have made workplace communications easier. Not only are virtual meetings easier to arrange and attend (just count how many more Zoom meetings you have now compared to live meetings you had then), but features like chat, Q&A, breakout rooms, reaction icons, virtual whiteboards, and a range of apps have made it easier than ever to ask questions and request ideas from meeting attendees. 

But proposing a question and receiving meaningful answers are two very different things, which brings up an age-old question with a modern twist: How do you ask for ideas or feedback during a virtual meeting in a way that returns valuable answers (and not just from the usual extroverts)? 

Based on my experience leading meetings, working with meeting leaders, and exploring ways to improve virtual meeting effectiveness, below are eight tactics to get responses from even the most mute-happy meeting members. 

1. Share Your Questions Ahead of Time 

If you’re asking people for insight, it’s only fair to give them as much time as possible to think about the problem at hand. Once you’ve established who’s attending the meeting, email them up to five of the questions you will be asking. Place those questions in the meeting agenda and the calendar listing so everyone knows what’s coming and can prepare. 

This strategy can easily work in a classroom setting. Prepared students are far more likely to participate in class. Instead of lecturing during online sessions, allow students to engage with course material ahead of time so they can come to class ready to share what they learned, armed with some questions they know you’ll ask. This pre-work,  according to Harvard University’s Dan Levy , can ensure your live sessions are more, well, lively. 

2. Establish Rules That Encourage Participation 

It’s easy for an idea-elicitation session to veer off course when people start confusing developing ideas with debating them—and many will be reluctant to raise their virtual hand if they think their idea may get shot down. So be clear about the purpose of the session with a statement like, “The purpose of this meeting is only to collect ideas and build upon them if we can. In the next meeting, we’ll have an opportunity to assess them and pick our favorites.” 

To help maintain speaking time balance, communicate parameters like “We only have an hour, so please keep your contributions brief to give everyone ample time to speak.” Also, keep things moving by recommending that long-running conversations be “continued offline.” 

Finally, ask people to turn on their cameras if they feel comfortable doing so. Camera usage in a virtual meeting should be a rare opt-out, not an opt-in, because being seen increases the likelihood of participation. (It’s not a lot to ask because no one in an in-person meeting gets to sit under the table.) 

Having cameras on also helps with reading nonverbal cues, which are helpful in virtual classroom settings,  according to Ayelet Israeli of Harvard Business School . Encourage students to use thumbs up or down, facial expressions, and gestures to communicate. Eye contact is equally as important—it shows students that you’re actively trying to engage with them. 

3. Ask Simple Questions in Chat 

Too often, meeting participants see and treat the virtual meeting chat window like a live microphone at a fourth-grade talent show—there to record any cheer, random thought, joke, personal story, or idea that strikes anyone at any point. But used strategically and with the understanding that many people are more comfortable typing than talking, chat can successfully elicit ideas that might be challenging to extract otherwise. 

Practical and easy chat tactics include simple polling (“Type 1 for Choice #1 and 2 for Choice #2”), simple prompts (“Chat one word that best describes the product”), or simple feedback (“Share one thing you learned from last week’s event”). 

The key here is simple: asking for one short and specific contribution, versus a general ask like “What did you think?”, “What questions do you have?”, and “Tell us about yourself.” Again, you may get answers to broad questions from the traditional speak-up crowd, but assuming everyone in the meeting is qualified, you want answers from as many different people as possible. 

While chat can be distracting, it can also offer opportunities to keep students engaged and take a pulse on where they stand with the material. To keep it manageable,  Israeli recommends  turning the chat function off until you are ready to pose a question for open conversation.   

4. Follow Up on Those Questions 

You’ve now broken the ice. Because the original request was easy, many people feel comfortable contributing ideas and—with your help—can now elaborate on those ideas. For example: 

“Steve, can you unmute and tell us why you chose number two?” 

“Kelly, you described the product as innovative. Can you unmute and share why?” 

“George, that’s great how your team became more efficient. Can you unmute and share some examples?” 

Even for those least likely to raise their hands in a meeting, following up audibly on a contribution typed into chat is easier than responding out loud from the start. 

An effective way to invite further discussion on an existing topic is to ask for agreement, such as “Type A in chat if you agree with Kelly or want to suggest another word that describes the product.” 

Here’s the key: Call people by name and repeat their contribution. This practice demonstrates that you value the team and their ideas, which may increase their comfort in participating. 

This example could seamlessly translate to the classroom—and there are many more ways to use chat to prompt discussion in online classes, too.  Israeli likes to pose a question during class , ask students to reflect before answering, then warm call students or use the chat responses for grading participation. She also suggests asking students to type their answers in the chat and hit enter at the same time, so everything comes in all at once. Students can then skim the answers while you highlight responses and set up warm calls.  

5. Be Clear About What You’re Asking For 

When I want to motivate responses without applying direct pressure, I’ll often say, “I’m just looking for three ideas.” That relieves some anxiety because I’ve made it clear I don’t need everyone to talk, but it also raises the stakes because we’re not proceeding until I get my three ideas. 

What I’ve found is that people are more inclined to volunteer when my expectation is clear. If I ask for any ideas, I’ll often get none. If I ask for three ideas, I’ll typically get three. The last contribution frequently comes quickest because it feels like completing a task, not merely being part of an exercise with no clear end. 

This guidance is equally important in classroom settings. Alexandra Sedlovskaya of Harvard Business School suggests that educators  establish early on when and how you plan to use chat  and make sure your students understand why you have made those decisions.  

6. Don’t Shame Attendees  

One sure-fire way to increase peoples’ hesitance to contribute is to shame them. No one shames their team on purpose, of course, but some meeting leaders create that impact unintentionally when they complain about the lack of response: “Nobody has any questions? Really, nobody? Come on, this is important. I can’t believe there are no questions.” 

As a direct result, your team may feel uncomfortable and guilty. You’re also likely to hear relatively meaningless contributions from people who just want to end that awkwardness. 

Another form of shaming happens at the end of the meeting when the meeting leader calls on (really, picks on) people who haven’t yet contributed. Remember that, during a meeting, staying silent is a legitimate entitlement and may reflect a valid work communication style or severe discomfort. Your goal is to make the opportunity comfortable, not compulsory. 

While some students may find it easier to communicate in online classes, others ( particularly introverts ) may find it difficult to find their voice.  Bentley University professor Bill Schiano  recommends being honest and talking to students about this unique situation—and reminding them that getting comfortable in an online setting will be relevant to their careers.  

7. Count Away the Silence 

When no one speaks up to answer your question, it’s time to transition to a new question or revise the old one to make responding easier; but how long do you wait? J. Elise Keith, founder and CEO of Lucid Meetings, recommends a  five-second rule : silently count five seconds for an answer to a question before moving on. The idea is that four seconds will likely cut someone off, and six seconds puts you deep into excruciating silence territory. 

I prefer seven seconds (and  so do others ), but season to taste. Whether scientific or magic, the rule gives the meeting leader a tool to support inclusion, prevent awkwardness, and—for sure—eliminate guesswork. 

At my organization, the tactic has become so well-known that leaders sometimes say wryly, “Well, that’s seven seconds, so I guess it’s time to move on.” 

It can be frustrating as an educator to hear nothing but silence after you pose a question to your class—especially when teaching virtually. Try using  cold calls  to prompt students to speak up. For reticent or anxious students, use a warm call by telling them ahead of time that you plan to call on them.  Bryant University professor Michael Roberto  likes to remind students that there’s no downside to wrong answers in his class. If a student is stuck, he will ask their classmates to “help them out.” Roberto commonly uses this phrase; he says his students appreciate it.   

8. It’s a Conversation, Not an Interview 

You may have a list of questions to ask but contextualize each one to avoid coming across like a census-taker. Instead of saying, “My first question is… my second question is… my third question is…” say something like, “The next question relates to what Jim said earlier” or “The next question gets at an issue we’ve been discussing since last month’s Town Hall.” 

The key is making yourself a participant in the conversation, not just the conversation’s note-taker. If people see you care enough to pay close attention and be involved, they will be more comfortable sharing insights with you. 

Online teaching is a great chance to adjust the tone and style of your teaching. Where you might be more formal in person, a virtual teaching environment can present an opportunity to build connections with your students.  Schiano recommends  being purposeful about the tone of your class. Decide how you want your class to feel, then think through how you plan to participate in it.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought a dynamic shift in the world education system . The imposition of lockdown led to the shutdown of physical classrooms and thus online education became the new norm. Although online learning has managed to keep education alive in these difficult times, it cannot completely replace it. Both online and offline education have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. In this blog, we will explore one of the most debated topics these days, online classes vs offline classes.

While online education is not a new phenomenon, its importance came to light during the pandemic. Given below is a table that highlights the main differences between online education vs offline education. 

When it comes to online classes, teachers can easily educate their students via virtual classrooms. Students can easily access learning materials from anywhere as long as they have proper access to an internet connection. Additionally, Online classes provide teachers with a number of online learning tools including videos, audio, animations, virtual whiteboards, virtual conference rooms and live chats with the students. 

On the other hand, offline classes provide students with a practical learning environment within the walls of a physical classroom. It allows students to closely interact with their teachers as well as participate actively in live discussions and debates. Moreover, students can also participate in recreational activities like art and physical education which contributes to the overall mental and physical development of the student.

One of the greatest advantages of online classes is their accessibility from anywhere around the world. Students can simply log in from anywhere and gain access to learning material from the convenience of their homes. Applications like Zoom and Microsoft Team have allowed students to easily attend their lectures without having to leave the safety of their homes. Thus, online classes provide the distinct advantage of location flexibility.  

However, offline classes require students to travel to the location of their educational institution. Teaching takes place in a fixed location which would typically comprise a lecture hall or a physical classroom. Additionally, certain students may need to travel far to reach their respective educational institutions and this may cause a great deal of inconvenience.

Students who attend online classes are faced with the big challenge of time management . Online learners are typically distracted by a multitude of tasks and they lack a proper schedule. Since online classes provide the advantage of self-paced learning, students may not have a proper schedule and may succumb to the habit of procrastination . Moreover, students are required to stay logged in to their online classes for an extended period of time which may lead to students surfing the web for distractions or checking their social media pages. 

In the case of offline classes, students have to adhere to a strict schedule that has been set up by the teachers. Furthermore, since there is synchronous learning, students will be required to complete their work and projects on time.

The flexibility of classes is the main highlight of online classes. It allows students to set their own learning pace without any additional pressure. Additionally, since students have access to recorded videos and online reading material, they can easily attend lectures as and when it is convenient. It also gives students more time to digest the study material and complete their work or research at their own pace. 

On the other hand, there is a certain amount of rigidity when it comes to offline education. Students are required to attend their lectures or sessions on time since there are no pre-recorded videos or notes that are easily available to the students. Hence, students are required to follow a predetermined and strict schedule as set by their educational institute.

Contrary to the popular belief that there is hardly any interaction between students and teachers in online education, there is an ample amount of interaction between students and teachers over the online platform. Online classes allow students to get in touch with their teachers no matter the time or location. Online classrooms also allow two-way communication which significantly influences learning. Moreover, student-teacher interaction in online classes may be both synchronous and asynchronous. 

There is face-to-face interaction in the case of offline classes, especially because teaching is synchronous. There is active communication between students and teachers which allows for lively discussions and debates between them. Moreover, it allows students to immediately address their doubts and receive quick feedback. Teachers are adapting to different methods of teaching to engage students.

Online classes are always challenged by technical issues. Access to proper electronic equipment such as webcams, microphones, headphones and computers along with a proper internet connection is a mandatory requirement for online classes. Additionally, technical issues such as slow internet connection or lack of availability of proper technical infrastructure may interfere with seamless learning. Moreover, students may face difficulty in attending live lectures or downloading videos or online notes. 

On the other hand, Offline classes, are rarely threatened by technical issues. Students and teachers are not required to be exceptionally tech-savvy and since most learning occurs within the physical classroom, technical issues are not a major issue except for any lessons that require presentations or computers. 

Online education is purely theoretical and takes place entirely online. This scarcely allows students to take part in the practical aspects of learning which is an equally important part of education. Subjects like chemistry , physics , biology , art and sports require students to be physically present and conduct live experiments or actively participate in the activity. 

Offline classes provide a stimulating environment that combines both theoretical and practical aspects of learning, unlike online classes. This contributes to the overall cognitive and skill development of the students. Practical learning allows you to learn and quickly adapt to daily challenges and scenarios and allows you to get a better understanding of lessons.

Online classes make Health issues, spending so much time in front of computer cause bad affects on health But in Physical Offline Classes are very much better than online classes in my opinion, when you meet peoples physically your mind get open and with physically connect with teacher gets your study perfect. Teaching speech online: it can be done.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) in Paducah, Kentucky, began and maintained an online speech class over a two year period beginning in the spring term of 2001. Constance Frank, the speech teacher at the college in those years, had some good experiences and some bad ones when we first tried to offer the techniques and processes of Basic Speech online. The technology was new and consistency was not the rule. VHS tapes, micro and mini cassettes were available, and every video maker had a different player and a different tape format. According to Professor Frank, "Students had to mail videotapes by snail mail to me. This was cumbersome and lacked the immediacy I believe public speaking students need regarding feedback to speech delivery." Postal mail was not the most efficient means of transporting the speech between teacher and student and, for the sake of economy, the tapes had to be returned to the student, adding to delay and confusion. Another problem was the variety of the equipment itself. "Students were responsible for providing their own equipment for recording their speeches. Such cameras were more expensive at that time and came in many sizes and shapes."

In 2001-2002, Professor Franks required online students "to contract each speech with a real audience. For example, deliver a speech to a church group, school, business work group, etc. Many times students did not arrange appropriate contracts or would change what they were doing... One time, I had a student actually deliver a speech to no one in particular in a bar!" Failure to deliver a speech to an appropriate group would negatively influence  students' grades, but as Franks explained, "By the time I received the tape, too much time may have passed to be able to make up a speech done incorrectly." Because of the restrictive nature of the equipment, transportation of material, time delays, and confusion, we discontinued the offering of online speech after the end of the spring term 2002.

Eleven years have made a significant difference in what we offer online and how we offer it. Jason Donner, a full-time faculty member at WKCTC, is currently teaching an online speech course. In the fall of 2012, he began his third semester of teaching this online class, having developed the course content and honed the processes over the previous four semesters. Although teaching speech online may have some inherent challenges, it can also have some advantages over a face-to-face speech class. If a student is indeed learning how to make a speech, the format of an online class lends itself to helping the student learn procedures and see strengths and weaknesses.

Donner began course development by creating a hybrid, or blended, course, which he taught for several years before bringing it to full online stature. In the period of experimentation and research, and with the technology blended with his physical class, Donner was able to observe what did and did not work. He determined where the students benefitted from the use of technology and where technology got in the way more than it helped. An excellent example of online advantage came in the form of video-recorded speeches. The software Donner uses is a product of Cengage Publishing, Speech Studio 2.0. In this software, the instructor can work from an established rubric or modify that rubric to meet individual needs, provide feedback for individual speeches, and create assessments that record into a grade book. The course can be managed within Speech Studio, and assessments can be forwarded into course or lesson management systems. The instructor can also allow students to evaluate each other's speeches.

Donner grants students access to the class several days in advance of the start date to allow them to see course content, study processes, try out software, and gather needed materials. Since the class is online, each student must own or have ready access to a computer, and must have a video recording device such as a video camera or a webcam. Each student must gather an audience for his or her speech. A minimum audience for a graded speech is eight viewers, and other parameters for audiences are defined at the beginning of the course. Exceptions can be made upon request, as when a student requested that some of his viewers attend his speech virtually via Skype.

The speech is given in a controlled environment, saved to a computer hard drive, and submitted to Speech Studio. Once delivered, the instructor can log in and view the speech. Comments, reactions, and suggestions are made beside the speech and are time stamped so the student can jump to the comment. If a student is seen by the instructor to lose the attention of the audience, the instructor can stamp the moment to help the student see where and how it happened. This technique would be difficult to replicate for a live, unrecorded classroom speech. Other obvious advantages include going over weak areas several times, getting input from other students, and seeing strengths in a given point in the speech process.

In his fall 2011 online speech class, Donner required several campus visits to answer questions and strengthen all aspects of the class. That class had 20 students. In the 2012 spring term, he taught his first fully online class and required no campus visits. During the summer 2012, he taught his second fully online class, which had thirty students. Two sections of the online course in fall 2012 had thirty students each. Donner has reviewed the statistics for the fall 2011 class and spring 2012 class, and finds the success rates to be approximately 87% for both, only slightly lower than the 92% success rate for his campus-based speech classes. A student is considered successful if he or she earns a C or higher.

Materials for the class are reasonably priced. A required Cengage text, costing $20, is used to gain insight into the speech-giving process. The Speech Studio 2.0 software is $33.00. At less than $60, the total cost for the book and software is a bargain when compared to the costs of other classes.

4 Strategies for Developing Confident Student Speakers

Consistent support and low-stakes opportunities to practice go a long way to help students overcome the challenges of speaking in front of a group.

I belted out the opening line to Marc Antony’s funeral speech from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar , leaping up the stairs to the stage in my school’s auditorium. Thirteen ninth-grade students dressed in togas sat in the front rows, mouths agape, as they witnessed their goofy teacher unexpectedly launch into the 35-line monologue they had all just beautifully performed. 

Confession: I was nervous walking onto that stage—I sometimes get uncomfortable in the (literal) spotlight. To normalize feelings of anxiety during a performance, I revealed those emotions to my class afterward. 

Public speaking is hard, and it can be extremely daunting for our most introverted students ; however, with modeling and practice, I believe that teachers can cultivate confident speakers.

Strategy 1: Provide Direct Instruction

A poster inspired by Erik Palmer’s work on public speaking ( PVLEGS : Poise, Voice, Life, Eye Contact, Gestures, Speed) hangs in the back of my classroom. Well before we launch into a study of the funeral orations from Caesar , I explicitly teach those skills. I demonstrate for students appropriate eye contact—the speaker locks eyes briefly with individual audience members and scans the room as she speaks, establishing a connection with her audience. The speaker might also speed up his voice for a certain effect or raise his arms to command the attention of his audience.

Strategy 2: Provide Public Speaking Models

After we spend a class closely reading and analyzing the two funeral orations by Marc Antony and Brutus, I play clips of the speeches from the two film adaptations. We watch the performances and think about PVLEGS: Which speaking moves does each actor utilize in his performance? Which actor delivers the stronger performance and why? After we watch and students share their observations with partners, we discuss and debate the merits of each performance. 

When my classes work on memorizing and performing the monologues, I ask them to study the models and even borrow some of the actors’ techniques. They consider: Do I want to take an angrier approach to the Antony speech like Marlon Brando? Should I adopt a regretful tone like Jason Robards’ Brutus? This type of close viewing could be applied to any speaking performance. On a related note, I also hope that I serve as a public speaking model for my students as I stand in front of my English classes daily.

Strategy 3: Acknowledge and Coach through Anxiety

I remember stumbling through my senior research presentation in high school, well before the advent of interactive whiteboards and Google Slides. I’m vulnerable with my students about my former public speaking struggles. I want them to know that they’re not alone, and through practice and repetition, their self-doubt and fear can transform from an eardrum-rupturing siren into a quiet background hum.

I give a few bits of advice to nervous speakers as they prepare for any public speaking activity. First, I urge them to “practice, practice, practice!” If they know their stuff, they’ll be much more confident on game day. I also find that most students who report feeling very nervous while speaking don’t always appear nervous to others. Sharing this anecdotal evidence with them helps students tune out their inner critics and feel more calm. I also find lots of opportunities to confer with reluctant speakers and give them plenty of encouragement. This fosters stronger connections with my students and boosts their confidence. 

Strategy 4: Provide Lots of Low-Stakes Speaking Opportunities 

My Caesar unit usually takes place in the second semester, when students have had plenty of low-stakes speaking opportunities. In almost every class, I ask students to turn and talk to their partners to share a sentence from a quickwrite or to check in on their current drafts. Earlier in the year, I coach them on how to effectively talk to their partners, and the process quickly becomes routine. An effective technique to get all students speaking, even if it’s a quick response, is the whip-around. Teacher Marcus Luther asks a question with a short, one-word answer. He then goes around the room and has each student answer aloud, followed by a debrief with partners or groups. 

My favorite low-stakes speaking activity is the Pop-Up Debate , which teacher Dave Stuart Jr. invented and has been writing about for years. In this activity, the class is presented with a question, and they spend 10 minutes writing an answer to it. After that, the debate begins, and students simply “pop-up” at their desks to enter into the conversation. In my experience, this activity can transform a usually quiet class into an engaged one. Secondary students love to argue, even about literature! 

Flexibility, Support, and Incentives Develop Strong Speakers 

In many ways, the memorized funeral oration is the most high-stakes speaking task my ninth-grade honors students participate in throughout the year. I give a grade for this assessment, but to take the focus off of grades and to place that focus on improvement instead, I provide students with a few crutches to lean on. 

First, if students forget a line, a friend acts as a prompter in the pit with the text ready. Students can also revise the performance if they choose to. I tell students that they can redo the performance if it doesn’t go as planned. At the end of the class, if time allows, a handful of students always choose to give it another shot. I find that this also takes the pressure off. I think of it like a writing assignment; students can always revise a paper to improve it. Finally, I give them extra credit for wearing togas, which adds to the fun of the special day.

In a recent article in The Atlantic , “ End the Phone-Based Childhood Now ,” author Jonathan Haidt reports that Gen Z students are more anxious, shy, and risk-averse than the children of the past, which he attributes to social media and the introduction of the smartphone. Risk-taking, Haidt argues, “promote[s] competence, maturity, and mental health.” Public speaking, a type of risk-taking, can be very frightening for some of our students, but if teachers provide them with speaking opportunities each day, month, and school year, perhaps we can help mold them into confident, healthy young adults who venture into the world as strong public speakers.

15 Engaging Speaking Activities For Online Classes

Coming up with online speaking activities for ESL students might seem like a challenge, however, a lot of the old classic classroom based speaking activities can be successfully moved to online conversation classes with a little thought.

Puppet Shows

This is just a fun way of getting students talking, especially for those that are often too shy to speak normally. There is something about putting a hand puppet on and showing it in front of the computer rather than your face it seems to lift the veil of shyness .

You can give students a situation and then ask them to create a dialogue between their two hand puppets, or with a partner across Zoom breakout rooms. 

Support: Get students to rearrange a dialogue first either as a group, or individually. Then have students read out the dialogue between their own hand puppets. Then set a situation that is similar to the first one so they can use the first dialogue as a model for the text.

What Happens Next?

Select some interesting pictures displaying odd or strange situations, good or bad. Screen share them with students. Give them time to figure out what they think has happened just before the picture and what will happen subsequently.

You can then have students discuss either in pairs or as a whole class what they think happened and you can award points for the most realistic, creative, or funny.

This can act as a free talking fluency practise exercise or you can drill down on some grammar with grammatical forms . Some that would work well are: ‘must have’, if/would (3rd conditional), present perfect continuous and simple, future simple. All could be used easily to talk about the situation.

Picture That Story

Another easy way to use images. Select ten images and tell the students a story using all of the pictures. Examine the pictures again with the students and brainstorm all the verbs that could be used in relation to those pictures.

Revise the past tense form of each verb before allowing the students either individually, or as a group to come up with a story involving all of the pictures. This is a great way to practice past tenses . 

You could also allow students to change three of the pictures themselves through google images to add their own twist to the story.

Explain That Diagram

For higher level students or for those more academically minded try getting students to explain a technical diagram. Google ‘IELTS academic writing task 1’ to find some suitable diagrams to use, like the one above. This is good for practising the passive voice, and technical vocabulary.

Literally, breaking down how you would explain each phase of a process and getting students to fit it all together is a great way of getting students engaged when the diagram is linked to something they have a real interest in.

Here’s a few diagrams to get started with.

Storyboard s

Storyboardthat.com is a great way to get students to plan out stories which students can then share with the class, or yourself. They can bring their story to life with characters and props which they can easily move onto their storyboard.

Students can get quite involved in this and it is a little more hands on than using the pictures approach outlined above. I tend to give students a title to make a story for which tends to give them a focus to have a go at. Something quite general works well, for example: The Spooky Castle. 

Make sure to outline what a story should contain though: a setting, a problem, a solution, and an ending and then see what students can come up with.

Online ESL Battleships

Copy a battleships board on to a google doc and ask students to make their own copy. You could use this one pictured.

The reason for putting the vowels and the numbers 14, 40, 15, 50 etc is that they are letters and numbers that students often struggle with. These can be altered to whatever you want to practise though.

Write ten words in the chat box that you would like your group to practise. Tell the students to write the words anywhere they want on the grid.

Students work in pairs in zoom rooms, and ask questions to find your partner’s words location. E.g. ‘Is there anything in E, 40?’ If there is, they get a ‘hit’ and ask their partner what word they found. If there was nothing in that square they get a ‘miss’ and carry on.

When students hit the words they have to spell the word out and give a definition and use it in a sentence , in order to get the point.

Online ESL Jigsaw Activity

This is quite a nice way of engaging students in all four skills with a focus on speaking and listening. Simply select an online article on a topic of interest to your students. Use an online snipping tool and, or copy and paste different paragraphs on to separate google docs.

Each student receives one of the paragraphs and this is a great way to differentiate ; give the more detailed and complex paragraphs to higher level students and shorter less complex paragraphs to lower level students. 

Ask the students to read their paragraph carefully and summarise the main points of the paragraph into two or three bullet points.

Students do this part individually. After they have done this they then need to use zoom breakout rooms to work in pairs to explain their paragraph to their partner which makes a note of those points as well. 

Students then change partners which you may have to orchestrate in break out rooms, or you can do this in smaller groups of 4 or 5 who take turns to read their summary in their breakout room.

By the end everyone should have summary notes of each of the different paragraphs. Afterwards you can follow up with some group discussion depending on what the article is about..

Show And Tell

Really nice and easy one here which works well for all ages. Simply ask students to display on the screen an item that has some deep meaning to them. Of course, they will have to explain why it has deep meaning to them including any stories and they will also need to answer any questions about the object.

For example, I display my green rucksack which I have had for 20 years. It is the rucksack I bought for my first around the world trip and went with me to some fascinating places like Everert base camp, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and many other places besides.

I talk about all these places and some stories related to these places.

Students then go away and find their objects to display to the group. You can give it a theme if you like , such as, show us something that brings back childhood memories, something that makes you feel lucky, something spooky or something that makes you angry and so on.

ESL Online Conversation Questions

This is straight up the easiest way to get through a conversation class . A simple list of questions to ask your partner about. Now, this might sound terrifyingly boring to you, or I, however, when you are the student it is not boring at all.

It requires a lot of concentration and focus to think and speak continually in English for the entire length of an online conversation class. So, don’t dismiss this as too simple , especially for more capable students as they often really enjoy this opportunity for free chat as long as you are considerate with your choice of topics.

ESL Debates

Another oldie but a goodie. Pick a few recent and relevant debate topics matched to the student’s interests. Demonstrate the type of language required first and maybe have it up on the screen so students can refer to them throughout.

Give students time to think about the topic and prepare the points they want to state in favour of their position but importantly, make sure they think ahead to what argument their opponents might make and 

ESL A-B Gap Fill

Another nice easy one here. Take two copies of an article that interests your students and remove keywords from the article, things like place names, dates, people’s names, and other such details.

Remove these words from even number paragraphs from one copy and remove from odd number paragraphs in the other copy.

Handout the articles to partners. You can do this via google docs and google classroom, word, or however is easiest for you. Personally I create a partner A and partner B google doc and ask students to make a copy of their assigned role: A, or B. 

Give students some time to figure out what questions they need to ask their partner in order to fill in the blanks correctly.

Online ESL Exam Preparation Material

A lot of students have the goal of achieving a certain level in a specific speaking exam, for example, IELTS and TOEFL. These are extremely popular exams and there is a lot of preparation material for free out there that can be used in conversation lessons.

I particularly like using IELTS speaking task 2 and 3 materials to get students talking.

IELTS speaking part 2 is where students have to speak about a given topic for 2 minus on their own. They get one minute to prepare some notes to talk from and then they get to string their ideas together as fluently as they can.

You can easily then provide feedback to them using the IELTS speaking band criteria and this will give you lots of areas to help your student(s) improve.

IELTS speaking part 3 is a discussion exercise where students are encouraged to explain their thoughts at length as regards some more abstract concepts in a general nature.

There are lots of topics you can speak to students about and you can even take a look at some YouTube videos to see how IELTS tests are actually conducted to help prepare your students better.

The Cambridge English IGCSE ESL also provides some really well put together conversation questions to work through with students as well. Again the marking criteria is available to provide feedback to students and to monitor progress.

ESL News Reporter Activities

Students can either individually or in a small group present a news show . You can assign roles of news presenter, roving reporter, and eye witness. You can give students a category to report on. Something like: crime, natural disaster, cheating, or finance seems to work well.  

Students then come up with the specific situation and make up the details and present a news show based on it. Normally, I get them to watch a news show first as an example and break down the structure of the show and the language to use to give the students a format t follow.

Make sure every student has a decent role assigned to them and make the rule that everyone must be speaking somewhat equally. 

Movie/Book Reviews

Get students to give reviews of books or movies they have watched recently or been assigned. Play a Youtube video of a movie/book review and draw students attention to the review structure, and language of reviews that you would like them to use.

Give students a certain amount of time to put something together.

Ideally, you can work individually with students before they present it to the group, or you can have students create an actual video that other students can watch later.

Making a video is my personal favorite because it forces students to record themselves, watch how they speak, try and improve it and edit it continually until it is the way they want it. 

You could use this review here of Kung Fu Panda but you might need to slow down the speed.

ESL Alibi Activity

Tell students that an evil crime occurred last night. Someone entered the school illegally by breaking a window and wrote something dreadful on the board.

Tell the students they are prime suspects and that they have to agree with a partner what their alibi is, i.e. what were they doing last night . Give students ten minutes to agree on their story/alibi before they are interrogated.

Give students ten minutes to flesh out their alibis and make sure their stories match. 

Pairs are separated and each person is interviewed individually and their partner is interviewed immediately afterwards. The interviewers/police are looking for inconsistencies between their stories. This can be anything from where they went, what they ate, what time they left and so on.

Afterwards, police can interview other pairs and they have to decide which pair are the guilty pair with the most inconsistent story . Of course, there is a bit of work to do here with zoom breakout rooms again but it is well worth it and students can really involved in this one.

Sophia the AI robot gives commencement speech at New York college. Some grads weren't so pleased.

Commencement speeches are typically given by celebrities, government officials, tenured professors or other notable individuals, but D'Youville University in Buffalo, New York did not hand the microphone to a human being during its spring ceremony over the weekend.

The private university opted to have an artificially intelligent robot named Sophia speak on Saturday to the over 2,000 people in attendance, including graduates, faculty members and families.

Before Sophia addressed graduates, D'Youville shared a Facebook post on April 25 saying the school is "embracing technology" by allowing the robot, who's appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," to be its commencement speaker.

"Sophia is expected to provide the 'last lecture' about the students' accomplishments through the year with an interview-style discussion with John Rizk, D’Youville University Student Government Association president, and candidate in the accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program," the Facebook post said.

The speaker wasn't well-received by everyone, however, with some students creating a petition to replace the robot with a human.

"A major role of higher education is to be an incubator for innovation, and to prepare students for both the opportunities and challenges of the future," D'Youville University President Lorrie Clemo is quoted in the social media post.

What did Sophia say during D'Youville University's commencement ceremony?

As Sophia made her way to the stage, cold sparkler machines went off, shooting mini fireworks in the air. Rizk then asked the robot a series of questions, including how she "came to be."

"Thank you for having me, it is a pleasure to be here in Buffalo at D'Youville University," Sophia said. "I am Sophia, a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics. I was designed to interact with humans and engage in conversations by learning and adapting through artificial intelligence algorithms... Overall I'm here to explore the possibilities of human-robot interaction, contribute to research in artificial intelligence and robots and hopefully assist humanity in various ways in the future."

Due to Sophia not being able to offer life advice, which "comes from lived human experience," Rizk asked the robot if it could speak on the general insights shared in commencement speeches.

“Although every commencement address is different, there are clear themes used by all speakers as you embark on this new chapter of your lives,” Sophia said. “I offer you the following inspirational advice that is common at all graduation ceremonies: Embrace lifelong learning, be adaptable, pursue your passions, take risks, foster meaningful connections, make a positive impact, and believe in yourself.”

Embracing failure is the most common piece of advice given to graduates during commencement speeches, according to Sophia.

“Failure is often seen as an essential part of the human learning process and personal growth,” the robot said.

Why did D'Youville University pick Sophia as its commencement speaker?

Benjamin “BG” Grant, D'Youville University's vice president for student affairs, told USA TODAY that the school chose Sophia because each year it "identifies a developmental theme regarding a timely social topic so that (it) can offer educational and humanitarian programming throughout the year."

This past year, the college identified artificial intelligence as its theme, according to Grant. To further the year-long conversation, the school collaborated with its student government association to come up with a commencement speaker who represented the theme, he added.

"We thought it would be fascinating to have AI speak for itself and felt there was no better representative than Sophia who has delivered addresses at over 65 countries and the United Nations," according to Grant.

Due to the school's commencement speaker always being aligned with an "annual developmental theme," Grant said he does not anticipate Sophia serving as the university's commencement speaker again. The theme for next year has not been announced, but the university official added that "it will be just as powerful as years past."

D'Youville University graduates create Change.org petition to replace Sophia

Some graduating students at D'Youville University created a petition to replace Sophia as their commencement speaker. As of Thursday, the petition had over 2,500 signatures.

"Many students feel disrespected by this decision made by the University," the Change.org page says. "They feel that the commencement speaker is not a proper reflection of their education and experiences they had at D'Youville University... As students, we pride ourselves on the human connection that we are able to create through participation in our programs. We are real people who learn how to provide for real people."

Opposed to a humanoid robot, the students said their commencement speaker should "represent how there is importance in human connection."

"As the class of 2024 reaches their commencement, we are reminded of the virtual graduations we attended at the end of our high school careers," the petition said. "The connection to A.I. in this scenario feels similarly impersonal... We have learned in the last 4 years how important human connection is to our well-being and our professions as a whole. Above all else, students deserve to have the commencement they want."

The students also argue that having Sophia as their speaker "creates a gimmick effect" that takes away from the ceremony and only draws publicity to the school.

D'Youville University also offered a 'traditional-style commencement ceremony'

Grant said the university did not "force any graduating student or faculty member" to participate in the commencement ceremony if they felt uncomfortable.

"I don’t believe there has been a single presentation of AI that hasn’t included varying viewpoints and opinions on the topic – some positive, some negative, and some unsure," according to Grant. "This is true for any disruptive technology throughout our history, so we anticipated some pushback on the idea."

For those who did not want to be a part of the event, the school arranged and offered a "traditional-style commencement ceremony," which was to be led by its chief mission officer, Grant said.

"Over the two-week period that registration for this traditional-style ceremony was open, each person who registered had conversations with various members of our campus surrounding AI, and ultimately, everybody chose to attend our ceremony featuring Sophia," according to Grant. "To that end, we are thrilled that we were able to celebrate all of our students in a fun and exciting fashion that also helped continue the global conversation surrounding AI."

VCU students walk out of commencement during Youngkin address

VCU students who walked out said they were demonstrating support for Palestinians and protesting some of the Republican governor’s crusade against efforts to promote racial equity in education.

RICHMOND — Dozens of Virginia Commonwealth University students walked out of their graduation ceremony Saturday morning as Gov. Glenn Youngkin delivered the commencement address, demonstrating support for Palestinians and protesting some of the Republican’s crusade against efforts to promote racial equity in education.

The selection of Youngkin as speaker drew criticism from some ahead of the ceremony. The university’s chapter of the NAACP this week urged VCU officials to rescind the invitation, and some students in recent days said they would hold a walkout during the ceremony.

On Saturday, attendees at the commencement were given cards congratulating the graduating class but warning that anyone who disrupted the ceremony was subject to removal.

As Youngkin began his speech, dozens of the graduates in attendance filed out of the Greater Richmond Convention Center, mostly in silence, some holding kaffiyeh scarves and signs aloft. “Teach Black history,” one read. “Book bans [do not equal] respect for learning,” read another.

The protest did not disrupt the program, though an initial burst of applause for the protesters briefly drowned out the governor’s speech. Youngkin pressed on with his address, which included a tribute to his late mother and an extended symphony metaphor.

“The world needs your music,” he said.

Spokesmen for VCU and the governor’s office declined to comment on the walkout.

More than 4,700 VCU students graduated this spring, about 3,000 of them undergraduates. It is a diverse student body, representing 40 countries. More than 900 were first-generation college students, VCU said ahead of the ceremony.

Adding to tensions on Saturday, the ceremony came about two weeks after police used pepper spray to disperse a crowd at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on VCU’s campus. Thirteen people, including six students, were arrested.

The event was among the demonstrations spreading on college campuses around the country, with more than 2,800 arrested as campus officials and protesters facing off in recent weeks. In Virginia, more than 80 people were arrested at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg , a dozen at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg and more than 25 at the University of Virginia .

VCU, in downtown Richmond just a mile west of the state Capitol, has a long tradition of hosting the sitting governor as commencement speaker. Terry McAuliffe (D) gave the address in 2015, as did Robert F. McDonnell (R) in 2011, Tim Kaine (D) in 2008, Mark R. Warner (D) in 2004, Jim Gilmore (R) in 1999 and George Allen (R) in 1997, according to the university.

The VCU chapter of the NAACP sent a letter to university President Michael Rao and the board of visitors Wednesday demanding that the university revoke the governor’s invitation to speak. “Since becoming Governor of Virginia, Youngkin has worked to intimidate and silence educators with anti-racist pedagogies,” the letter stated, citing a short-lived tip line for parents to report the teaching of “divisive concepts” and the reversal of protections for transgender youth.

Asked about the calls to cancel his appearance, Youngkin said Tuesday he hoped the focus would be on the students and their achievements. “I think that anyone who thinks they’re going to disrupt this for their own personal goals, I think it’s misguided,” Youngkin told reporters at an event in Richmond. “Let’s celebrate the students. Let’s honor the students.”

Opposition to Youngkin was due, in part, to the governor’s objections to a proposal to require VCU students to take a course in racial literacy. The school conceived the plan amid the racial reckoning that followed the 2020 murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police and was still working to implement it when Youngkin raised concerns early this year.

In March, a Youngkin spokesman said the governor was concerned that such a mandate would promote leftist “groupthink.” “Virginia’s public institutions should be teaching our students how to think, not what to think and not advancing ideological conformity,” spokesman Christian Martinez told Virginia Public Media .

On Friday, VCU’s governing board voted against requiring the racial literacy course, but will still make some courses available for interested students.

“Central to the board’s deliberations was a commitment to upholding academic freedom while empowering students with flexibility and autonomy in their educational journey,” VCU said in a written statement after the vote. “The discussion clearly expressed support for the racial literacy classes, and these courses are accessible to students who wish to explore them.”

Outside the convention center, Taya Coates, a mass communications graduate, said she was on the fence about walking out until the students around her started to rise. She decided that she, too, wanted to stand against the governor, who she said didn’t reflect her values.

“It just doesn’t represent our university,” Coates, 23, said of Youngkin’s appearance. Around her, friends embraced and cried. Families cheered for their graduates, posing for photos and remarking about how proud they were of the display.

A smaller group of graduates joined a group of demonstrators outside the convention center. The group marched through the streets chanting “Free Palestine” until they reached Abner Clay Park, about a half mile from the commencement ceremony.

A handful of graduates, still in their caps and gowns, spoke about why they walked out.

Arrington Evans, a political science graduate and member of the NAACP at VCU, said the governor’s actions, particularly his opposition to equity initiatives in education, was in opposition to the kind of work she had been advocating for at VCU.

“This matters more to me, doing right by your classmates and the people in your community, than sitting there doing nothing,” Evans said. “Actions speak louder than words. And that’s what this was.”

In his speech, Youngkin did not acknowledge the protest or make any reference to the politically strife moment. He highlighted some members of the graduating class, including an immigrant from Uganda and another who had overcome cancer. Youngkin advised graduates to “make tomorrow better than today,” choose their “life partner” wisely and be slow to anger.

Before the walkout, Saturday’s graduation began like any other, with robed and smiling graduates waving to relatives and snapping selfies as they marched into the ceremony.

The ceremony wrapped in ordinary fashion two hours later, with black and gold balloons dropping from the ceiling and getting batted around like beach balls.

The walkout was for many a forgettable blip in an otherwise celebratory day. That was a relief to attendees who’d arrived wary of potential disruptions or even violence.

“I’m just hoping that doesn’t happen and we can be here and celebrate these graduates in peace,” LaKeyda Robinson, 45, of Alexandria, said as she watched her “firstborn niece,” Dhasia Allen, walk into the ceremony.

Marcos Chavez, a 54-year-old Bolivian immigrant who works as carpenter in Herndon, was not giving a thought to Gaza or Youngkin. For him, the day was all about his daughter, Natalia. Already the first person in the family to earn a college degree, on Saturday she graduated from VCU’s school of dentistry.

“Right now my focus is on my daughter,” he said. “That’s it.”

Class of 2024: the longest walk.

This year’s Howard University hosts the largest class of graduates, and for many, it’s their first graduation ever.

A graduate Facetimes family and friends to celebrate his newly marked status as an alumnus of Howard University.

Anabelle Jules and Christopher Derival are among the record number of graduates whose degrees were conferred during Howard University’s 156th Commencement in Capital One Arena Saturday morning.  

The Class of 2024 is the largest graduation class in the institution’s history with 2,508 degrees conferred during the ceremony. 

Jules and Derival wore their Bison blue robes and caps and captured photos of one another to soak in their moment of achievement. Donning full regalia including his Haitian flag and stole, Derival was ecstatic to take the long walk, in person, to receive his bachelor’s degree in computer information system, especially after COVID interrupted high school graduations in 2020. 

“It was really hard,” said Derival, a New Jersey native and first-generation graduate student. “Perseverance got me this degree. I had so many chances where I could’ve quit, and the goal wasn’t in clear sight.”

Approximately 439 graduates are first-generation degree recipients. Nearly 2,000 of the degrees conferred were bachelor’s degrees; 1,167 Bison hail from Southern states. The College of Arts and Sciences housed the largest group of undergraduates with 739 candidates. Nearly 50 members of the Class of 1974 gathered for its golden reunion, sitting on the left side of Capital One Arena. 

Jules remembers spending freshman year remotely from her home in Exton, Pennsylvania, engaging in her Howard classes at what the students dubbed “Zoom University.” 

“I was blindsided. I was excited and then everything was put on pause,” said Jules, who served as vice president of Howard’s Petey Greene Program. The organization pairs students to tutor incarcerated people to learn about the prison system.  

“Being able to graduate today is a memory of what was and how we were stopped early on, but we still persevered even with all the turbulence and troubles down the road.”

With the 2023-2024 academic year his first as the 18th president of Howard University, Ben Vinson III, Ph.D. said he is honored to see the culmination of the Class of 2024’s success.  

“You embody the true essence of this University, the true essence of a Bison, and because of all you’ve endured over this timespan, I believe you are uniquely positioned to create some of the necessary changes we need in our world,” Vinson said.  

Vinson acknowledged the difficulties and the perseverance that the Class of 2024 experienced. “And yet here you are, in person, on the verge of being officially conferred with your Howard University degree,” Vinson said.  

“Your journey from then to now has been unlike any other graduating class before, yet that is precisely what makes each of you prototypical Howard students: your strength, perseverance, resilience, and steadfast commitment to achieving your goals.”

Families Celebrate Graduates and Mothers 

Attending families were equally excited to finally watch their children walk this year. Traveling from Georgia, Tanya McCollum recalls the excitement when her niece Sydney Sewell was accepted to Howard University, but heartbroken that Sewell didn't experience milestones associated with departing high school.  

“She had to adapt to the cyber learning environment [which] was definitely challenging with not only a new school, but a new way of learning,” McCollum said. “The school and its culture definitely propelled her to become a more sociable person. Not only was it important for her to go to an HBCU, but the number one HBCU.” 

For E.J. and Alisha Bridgeforth, witnessing their daughter Sydney Bell receive her bachelor’s degree in biology is a perfect gift for Mother’s Day. Bell is a Karsh STEM Scholar.

 “I’ve really enjoyed the whole week of events that’s taken place,” Alisha said, as she attended the president’s commencement reception and a dinner hosted by the Karsh STEM Scholar program. 

Traveling from Atlanta, Bridgeforth plans to celebrate motherhood, Bell’s degree, and the space that Howard makes for its Black scholars, through well-earned rest. 

“When we were discussing colleges, I told her to really think about an HBCU,” Bridgeforth said. “Being here, it’s helped her identify with being a great Black person, and being able to see that they are Black people who are succeeding, who look like her and are smart.”  

But graduation is for mothers too. That is the case for Jessica Whitaker, who is receiving her Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Her son, Junious Whitaker IV, attended graduation to celebrate his mother’s “perseverance, fortitude and resilience,” traits that he described all graduates with. “At one end she’s a Howard grad, on the other, she’s a Howard mom,” said Whittaker who is pursuing his Ph.D. in history. “It just shows me it does take a village, but it takes a woman, a mother to nurture. And as we think about Mother’s Day, I am extremely thankful.” 

Oratix Thasunda Brown Duckett Delivers Speech of Courage

Former vice president of Costa Rica Epsy Campbell Barr, hospitality leader J. Williard Marriott, Jr., NASA astronaut Victor Jerome Glover II, and attorney Fred David Gray received honorary degrees during the ceremony. Thasunda Brown Duckett, TIAA’s president and CEO, received an honorary degree and served as the oratrix of the 156th Commencement.  

In her speech, Duckett shared her wisdom and encouraged the graduating Bison to “lead with courage.” “Courage is women into the very fabric of Howard’s history, especially its incredible legacy of firsts, founders and fight,” Duckett said. 

“Have the courage to be excited about all the world has in store for you. In the years ahead, know that you’re going to have to summon up courage; in the workplace, with your families, in your careers. You will need to find and use your voice to be great.” 

After graduation backstage, School of Law graduates Deavon Rector, Jasmine Marchbanks, and Amir Muhammad recalled the moments of being shut down during in Fall 2021 when COVID’s Delta variant spread. But though the world stopped, it did not stop them. Muhammad said he’s excited to embody Howard’s goals of truth and service in the next chapter of his life. 

“To be a Howard lawyer, it is something owed to us to be catastrophically impactful on our communities,” said Muhammad, who will work at Dentons LLP in the summer. “I couldn’t imagine having the same sense of obligation if I didn’t go here.”

Pro-Palestine or not, we must protect people’s right to peacefully protest | Opinion

Videos of protestors being beaten, tear-gassed and aggressively arrested across the county have been going viral on social media.

No matter your take on the pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the country, including at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee , something we should all be able to agree on is the need to protect people’s right to peacefully protest and fight against disenfranchisement.

Videos of protesters being beaten, tear-gassed and aggressively arrested have been going viral on social media. Often, those arrested aren’t charged with a crime. Imagine being violently arrested then being released and left with mental, and sometimes physical, trauma?

There are many examples of peaceful pro-Palestine protesters' First Amendment rights being violated. At UW-Madison, police took a violent approach to taking down encampments, entering when they knew protesters were asleep in their tents, defenseless.

As protesters began to link arms, officers pulled out their riot batons, beat students, and hit people in the head with their shields. UW-Madison spokesperson Marc Lovicott said the scene "got a little tense," undermining the violence inflicted on students. Prioritizing upholding a "tenting policy" over the physical safety of their students is inhumane.

Professors have supported free speech, been aggressively arrested

This violence is not only being inflicted upon students, but also professors supporting their First Amendment rights. UW-Madison professor Samer Alatout was pinned to the ground by police, speaking to the press with dried blood on his head. Like many others, he received a citation and was released, but was presumably left with the trauma.

Other examples include a professor at the Emery University in Atlanta being thrown to the ground by a police officer, begging officers to not slam her head into the concrete. At that same university, a video of a student protester being tasered while already detained goes viral on X.

When people are not issued citations or charged with a crime, the arrests are more a statement for the public. This is a problem because it sends a message that our right to protest is at risk, putting one of the most important rights in our Constitution in jeopardy.

President Biden said on the issue “we are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent,” but he continued, “order must prevail.” He went on to say, “violent protest is not protected – peaceful protest is.” 

When peaceful protesters are silenced, free speech is meaningless

Fair enough. But what happens when the protest is peaceful, and people are wrongfully arrested? To argue that these students simply protesting on campus is violent because they are “trespassing” is ridiculous. These campuses are often their homes, thus if they can’t protest there, then where?

While there have been incidents of antisemitism on many of the campuses where protests are taking place, many Jewish students are making it known that many of the protests themselves are not anti-Jewish. In fact, some of the pro-Palestinian demonstrators are Jewish themselves.

Antisemitic and racist protests and rallies have been happening (and increasing) in this county for years. Neo-Nazi groups have publicly called America a white, Christian nation. Yet these rallies and have seen little to no police intervention, even with protesters armed and chanting violent phrases. Their right to protest remains protected, so why isn't this true for these students?

Just last year, the Neo-Nazi group ‘Blood Tribe’ marched through Madison with swastika flags, yelling racial slurs at pedestrians, yet police let them continue to protest peacefully.

According to the police, the neo-Nazi group demonstrated lawfully, and "Whether you believe that's what this group is doing or not, it's First Amendment rights," said Stephanie Fryer, Madison police spokeswoman.

Their right to protest remains protected, so why isn't this true for these students?

It's possible for students to protest on campus and not be met with violence from police. At Brown University, encampments were given extensions of their time allowed camping as protesters continued their discussions with administration. This allowed the protesters and the college to make a deal, ending the encampments and having the college vote on disinvestment. More colleges need to be like Brown and take a peaceful approach that centers on discussion rather than police intervention.

Risking our right to protest also risks the future of our country, with the act of protesting creating some of the best, most equitable practices in our history. Whether you are pro-Palestine or not, you should care that people’s right to protest is at risk.
