Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research 2e
Denise F. Polit, PdD
Users praised the accessibility, clarity, and user-friendliness of the first edition of Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research . Now, the push for evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing and health care makes this new edition timely. The style and practical emphasis of the first edition have been retained, but important innovations have also been introduced, making it even easier to embark on a professional pathway that includes statistical analysis. As in the first edition, the content includes descriptive statistics, bivariate inferential statistics, and many widely-used multivariate statistics. It assumes virtually no prior knowledge of statistics.
NEW TO THIS EDITION
- Emphasis on evidence-based practice
· SPSS Version 16.0 was used to generate output for the book
· Missing Values are demystified
· Factor Analysis content is expanded
· Power Analysis methods are explained

A working understanding of the major fundamentals of statistical analysis is required to incorporate the findings of empirical research into nursing practice. The primary focus of this article is to describe common statistical terms, present some common statistical tests, and explain the interpretation of results from inferential statistics in nursing research. An overview of major concepts in statistics, including the distinction between parametric and nonparametric statistics, different types of data, and the interpretation of statistical significance, is reviewed. Examples of some of the most common statistical techniques used in nursing research, such as the Student independent t test, analysis of variance, and regression, are also discussed. Nursing knowledge based on empirical research plays a fundamental role in the development of evidence-based nursing practice. The ability to interpret and use quantitative findings from nursing research is an essential skill for advanced practice nurses to ensure provision of the best care possible for our patients.

Context: This study investigated the uses of statistical techniques in nursing research articles (RAs) published within 2016 - 2020. Evidence Acquisition: Through stratified random sampling, 374 quantitative and mixed-method RAs were selected from five nursing journals (i.e., International Journal of Nursing Studies, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Nurse Education Today, Nursing Outlook, and Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing) published within 2016 - 2020. The statistical techniques used in these articles were derived, aggregated, and listed. Results: Descriptive statistics (20.59%) and multiple regression (15.74%) were the most frequent statistics used in the nursing RAs. Regarding the level of statistics, 49.83%, 17.00%, and 4.31% of the techniques were basic, intermediate, and advanced, respectively, indicating that basic statistical techniques are by far the most frequently used techniques in nursing RAs. The findings also revealed that students with basic and intermediate knowle...

Purpose: To examine statistical methods in psychological research in the British Journal of Health Psychology and British Journal of Clinical Psychology. To compare standards of reporting of statistics with the medical literature. Background: The main statistical methods that we use today arose primarily in agricultural research. Psychologists were swift to realise the usefulness of inferential statistics, and the methods were adopted, and adapted where necessary. Psychologists have been responsible for many advances in statistical thinking (for example, much of psychometrics, which has been adopted by medical research). However, other disciplines may be considered to be closer to current statistical thinking. Failure to follow best practice occurs in the reporting of statistical analysis of psychological research. Methods: All articles published in 2003 in the British Journal of Health Psychology (volume 8), and the British Journal of Clinical Psychology (volume 42), were statistically reviewed, and errors and potential improvements noted. Conclusions: A range of improvements could have been made to a number of papers. These include appropriate use and labelling of graphs, inappropriate description of statistical techniques (principal components analysis/factor analysis), failure to report appropriate output (e.g. lack of confidence intervals), and failure to give exact p-values. Comparison is made with the medical literature.

Correlation analysis has three general outcomes: (1) the two variables rise and fall together; (2) as values in one variable rise, the other falls; and (3) the two variables do not appear to be systematically related. To make those determinations, we use the correlation coefficient (r) and related p value or CI.
The earliest reference to the use of secondary data analysis in the nursing literature can be found as far back as the 1980's, when Polit & Hungler (1983 ), in the second edition of their classic nursing research methods textbook, discussed this emerging approach to analysis. At that time, this method was rarely used by nursing researchers.

It's calculated by taking the square root of the sum of all numbers minus the mean (squared) and dividing by one less than the number of values. For example, in a data set of five systolic blood pressures of 125, 128, 142, 145, and 150, the mean would be 138, based on this calculation: (125+128+142+145+150)/5.
