The Ration Card is issued by the State Government. It is a very important document that serves as an identity and nationality proof in India. It helps categorise families into Above Poverty Line (APL) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) on the basis of their economic status. It also provides citizens with the right to purchase goods from rationing shops at subsidised rates. 

Three kinds of Ration Cards issued are :

• - White card - Annual income above Rs 1 lakh
• - Orange card - Annual income between Rs 50,000- 1 lakh
• - Yellow card - For BPL (Below poverty line) citizens, with annual income less than Rs 15,000

Criteria : Citizen of India

To transfer a ration card:

To transfer a ration card from one state to another, visit the necessary food office in your jurisdiction. You will be asked to fill up a written application and submit it along with proof of address and the application fee after which your transfer will be processed.

Documentation required :

The documents required for you to transfer ration card made are –

• Three passport size photographs of the applicant
•  Proof of residence: Copy of any of the following documents showing the residence address of the applicant
• 1. Identity card issued by the Government or Public Sector Undertakings
• 2. Latest Telephone bill on the name of the applicant
• 3. Latest LPG receipt on the name of the applicant
• 4. Valid driving license
• 5. Valid Passport
• 6. Voter Identity card
• 7. Latest tax paid receipt, if living in own house
• 8. Extract of the electoral Roll
• 9. Latest Rent paid receipt, if living in a rented house, clearly indicating the name and complete postal address of the owner
• 10. Any other document that may prove the applicant’s residence

Do remember:

• Three kinds of Ration Cards are issued: - White card - Annual income above Rs 1 lakh - Orange card - Annual income between Rs 50,000- 1 lakh - Yellow card - For BPL (Below poverty line) citizens, with annual income less than Rs 15,000
• If you are applying for a ration card and you have held one earlier at another place, after submitting a surrender certificate from the previous place, a ration card will be issued afresh on the same day.
• To issue a new ration card, Rs.5/- is the charge for the BPL cards and Rs.10/- in case of APL cards. Also, Rs.45/- is charged for issuing of a computerized card.
• Every family residing in the State of Karnataka is entitled to a ration card. Either the head of the family or the spouse should submit the applications. Applications through intermediaries or social workers etc. will not be entertained. Applications received through any one in bundles will also not be entertained.

• Current Address
• Phone number
• Ration card number etc.

Ration Card Types In India

Candidates for the NFSC Cards are given a card based on their selection and materials they need to have after they get it. Each Type of Ration cards has the variation in interests and commodities received for it.

The following is the list of the types of the Ration Cards that are generally issued to the People who had applied for the Ration Card.

• All Commodity Cards:  These are also known as Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) Ration cards. These are usually Green or Yellow in colour and are issued to those candidates who are opting for the Rice and also for other Essential Commodities.
• Sugar Cards:  These are usually Saffron in colour given to those who are mainly going for Sugar instead of Rice. People having these Sugar Cards will be able to buy all the essential Commodities except for Rice. These are also known as Below Poverty Line (BPL).
• No Commodity Cards: These are identical to the Sugar Cards but white in colour. These cards are issued to those people who are not involved in buying any commodity under the Public Distribution System (PDS). These are also known as Above Poverty Line (APL) cards.

Another fact is that people holding Below Poverty Line (BPL) Ration cards  can also get an additional 3 KG of rice instead of the normal quantity of Rice.

Transferring Ration Card

Procedure for Local transfer

1. Applicant must be from the same Urban Local Body or Gram Panchayat.

2. Applicant submits the application to DSO/GPO.

3. SI/GPO checks and verifies the details in the master register and updates the FPS for the applicant in the     register.

4. Clerk/GPO makes a new ration card and issues to the applicant.

Procedure for transfer between Gram Panchayats/Urban Local Bodies

A citizen has to surrender his ration card to the DSO of his area for acquiring a surrender certificate. After getting the surrender certificate from DSO, one has to submit the surrender certificate to DSO of his new area while applying for new ration card. In case of rural, applicant gets it done through GPO.

Procedure for getting Surrender Certificate

For Urban area

1. Applicant submits the Application form along with ration card to clerk.

2. Clerk checks the application form & required  supporting documents  and gives an acknowledgement receipt to the applicant.

3. SI complete entries in master Register & Shop Register.

4. SI Sends information to the concerned local Fair Price shop.

5. Surrender Certificate issued to the Applicant.

For Rural Area

1. Applicant submits the Application form along with ration card to GPO.

2. GPO checks the application form & required  supporting documents  and gives an acknowledgement receipt to the applicant.

3. GPO complete entries in master Register & Shop Register.

4. GPO sends information to the concerned local Fair Price shop.

Fees: 5 Rs.

Background:

Each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May (May 11, 2024) to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States.

The need is great, but anyone can help. We invite residents to join letter carriers and partner organizations in the fight to end hunger in our communities by participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Simply leave a donation of non-perishable food in a bag near the mailbox on the second Saturday in May, and our letter carriers will do the rest. Participation is completely voluntary.
