Admission Criteria

Students are admitted to the accounting doctoral program only for the fall semester and on a full-time basis. For admission to the program, an applicant must have:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution
  • A superior academic record
  • A minimum GMAT score of 600 (must be less than five years old)
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper), 250 (computer), or 100 (internet), for applicants whose first language is not English, even if they have a degree from a U.S. university; TOEFL score must be less than two years old)
  • Personal qualifications of sound character, perseverance, intellectual curiosity and an interest in scholarly research

Our Ph.D. in Accounting admissions decisions are made after a consideration of all candidates who apply in a given year, based upon (a) GMAT scores, (b) past work experience in business contexts, (c) past GPA, (d) strength of letters of recommendation, and (e) quality of the personal essay by the applicant. Online or face-to-face interviews may also be requested in some cases, but not all.

Applicants must complete the  online application for admission to graduate studies at Michigan State University with fees paid.

Reviews of applications will begin December 1 and will continue until positions are filled. The deadline for applications is January 15. All accepted students begin the doctoral program in August – there are no spring or summer starts.

College transcripts

We require college transcripts showing grades received while pursuing all prior undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees, if any. Official copies should be sent directly to the Department of Accounting and Information Systems:

The Office of Admissions will accept the following as certified copies:

  • The copy is notarized with name/stamp/seal/date and submitted by the applicant in a sealed envelope.
  • The copy of the original is attached to an MSU faculty written translation signed and dated by faculty member when original is not in English.
  • The copy is stamped “true copy” or “duplicate” by the international institution (must be in sealed envelope).
  • The original transcript is viewed by an MSU department employee. The employee makes a copy and stamps the copy “compared with original.” The applicant and employee must both sign and date the copy.

We require three letters of reference from individuals who are able to appraise your personal interests, abilities and the likelihood that you will successfully complete your Ph.D. program. There is no specific recommendation form. Letters of recommendation should be uploaded via the recommendation portal. Alternatively, you may mail the letters to the department’s address (see above) or email to [email protected] .

Standardized test scores

To be considered for admission, you must submit a valid GMAT score (less than five years old). The Michigan State University Ph.D. in Accounting code for the GMAT is QH0-5P-04. International students must submit valid TOEFL scores (less than two years old) in order to be considered for admission. The Michigan State University code for TOEFL score is 1465.

Written statement of personal goals

This statement should address (a) the area(s) of accounting in which you are interested, (b) why you believe the program and faculty at Michigan State University fit your interests, and (c) your career objectives upon completion of your degree. This statement should be no longer than two pages (double-spaced).

Please note that when you complete the online application, you will be asked to complete an “academic statement” and a “personal statement.” Your statement of personal goals can be used for both the academic statement and the personal statement.

All applicants are required to take either the GRE or the GMAT, based on the field of study to which they are applying, regardless of previous experience and/or degrees. The GRE At Home and the GMAT Online exam will be accepted.

GRE and GMAT scores are valid for approximately five years from the date taken. For Fall 2024, we will accept GRE or GMAT scores from exams taken between December 1, 2018-December 1, 2023. 

Submitting GRE & GMAT Scores

All applicants must submit official test scores to Stanford GSB using the school code provided below. If you previously submitted test scores via paper or electronically but did not apply to our program, you must request that the testing agency resubmit your official test scores.

Due to the volume of applications we receive we cannot confirm receipt of official test scores. If we need any additional information we will reach out to you directly.

Accounting PhD Program

Preparing you to excel.

The University of Arizona is a premier research institution. Our goal is to prepare you to excel as an accounting researcher/educator at a top-50 accounting research institution. Our PhD graduates have placed at University of Chicago, University of Washington, Penn State University, University of Rochester, University of Texas at Austin, University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Ohio State University, Texas A&M University, University of Georgia, University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois, University of Southern California, Rice University and Washington University at St. Louis, among other institutions. Our expectation is that, as you near completion of the program, you will earn tenure-track research offers from comparable institutions.  View recent placements.

Rigorous Coursework, Research and Resources

To meet this expectation, we provide you with a unique opportunity to acquire intellectual skills through  rigorous coursework  and augment your learning with specialized workshops (e.g., SAS® and Perl training) and research assistantships. The objective is to prepare you to succeed in conducting  cutting-edge research on substantive accounting issues .

As a doctoral student, you will have access and exposure to the best in class resources available to academic accounting researchers.

Doctoral students focusing on archival research have access to the University of Arizona’s data subscriptions with the Wharton Research Data Services ( WRDS ®). WRDS provides its users with one location to access data across multiple disciplines. This significant data investment allows our doctoral students the opportunity to empirically examine accounting questions that include, but are not limited to, the following topics: Auditing, Corporate Governance, Executive Compensation, Financial Accounting, Tax and Managerial Accounting. Doctoral students seeking rigorous training in experimental data analysis team with our accounting faculty and doctoral students in the  Economic Science Laboratory  (ESL). The ESL is the home for cutting-edge experimental business research at the Eller College of Management. Much of the research that earned  Vernon Smith  the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was conducted at the University of Arizona between 1976 and 2002.

Plan of Study

Spend your first two years learning as much as possible about research areas, disciplines and methods. Years three and four are spent producing a quality dissertation and research pipeline. Your fifth year is dedicated to progressing your dissertation and research.

Teaching Expectations

To better prepare for future faculty positions, you’ll have the opportunity to serve as a teaching assistant for multiple semesters and teach one class as a primary instructor. This often takes place during the summer between your first and second year.

Student Experience

Our doctoral students enjoy a sunny and moderate climate in Tucson with a low cost of living and plenty of outdoor recreation and in-town nightlife. Clear your mind hiking the hills of the Sonoran Desert, hitting up a concert or diving in to the best taco platter you’ve ever had.

Highly Competitive Admissions

It is difficult to characterize the applicants admitted into the Doctoral Program in Accounting with a “cookie cutter” statement since every circumstance and qualification set is unique to each applicant. However, recently admitted classes averaged a 708 GMAT, 3.8 GPA and three-to-four years of work experience. Admission is highly competitive where no more than four students are admitted from many applications. We accept and review applications on a rolling basis. Applications received by the early deadline date of January 15 will receive full consideration for the upcoming academic year. There is a final application deadline of May 1. The final deadline may expire sooner conditional upon the number of offers already extended. Overall, it's in an applicant's best interest to apply on or before January 15 whenever possible. Applicants are well served by taking a GMAT review course and allowing for time in the application process to educate themselves on requirements and deadlines.  View admission requirements and materials.

Many students underestimate the quantitative rigor of research methods courses. Prior to starting a doctoral program, we strongly encourage you to take ECON 520 or an equivalent course that covers the basic mathematical statistics topics necessary for a deep understanding of applied econometrics. From a programming standpoint, SAS and STATA® are common software packages that support statistical data analysis. A SAS Boot Camp is offered to doctoral candidates; however, accepted candidates are also encouraged to take a SAS programming course or programming courses that provide exposure to SQL ( Structured Query Language ).

Areas of Accounting Research

Accounting research  may be classified on three dimensions:

  • Substantive area
  • Source discipline

The key substantive areas are managerial accounting, financial accounting, auditing and tax. The common source disciplines are economics, finance, management and psychology. The typical research methods are analytical modeling, archival data analysis and experimental data analysis.

Our faculty and students have sustained a proven track record of publishing in the top accounting journals across all substantive areas utilizing archival and experiment data analysis.

The University of Oklahoma's Steed School of Accounting evaluates each applicant individually in order to select for admission those applicants with the aptitude, scholarship, and analytical skills necessary to successfully complete an advanced degree. Most applicants (recent graduates with up to a few years of work experience) are generally required to submit the following materials in order to be considered for admission.  

  • Transcripts of prior undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Graduate admission exam scores (typically GMAT, see following paragraph for possible exception)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE) for applicants from non-English speaking nations
  • Statement of your reasons for pursuing a doctorate specializing in Accounting and why you chose to apply to the University of Oklahoma.

Under extraordinary circumstances, such as when the applicant has remarkable academic or work experience, we may use other demonstrated qualifications to determine eligibility for admission and may waive the GMAT requirement.  Contact the PhD coordinator if you think this may apply to you.

The application deadline is January 15. Applications after this date will be considered on a space available basis.  After reviewing applications, the final part of the selection process involves inviting a small set of strong applicants for a campus visit to meet with faculty and doctoral students to ensure a program fit.

GMAT, GPA and TOEFL Expectations

While the Steed School of Accounting does not have specific admission requirements (e.g. minimum GMAT score/GPA), admission is highly competitive. The PhD Committee, comprised of members of the accounting faculty, recommends admission on the basis of the total application.  Applicants to our PhD program provide application materials including: past degree(s), GPA, a graduate entrance exam score (typically GMAT), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.  As indicated above, we may, under extraordinary circumstances, consider applicants for admission with other demonstrated qualifications.

Accounting Ph.D. students complete a program of study that begins with coursework in accounting, quantitative methods, economics, and finance. Through seminar courses, you will become fluent on the existing state of research literature, appropriate research methods, and proper management of the publication process.

Course requirements are typically satisfied in the first two years of the program. In addition to doctoral seminars, Ph.D. students will take courses in the departments of finance and economics, and are encouraged to explore inter-disciplinary pursuits.

Comprehensive Examination

A comprehensive examination will be administered at the conclusion of the second year in the program. Satisfactory performance on the exam marks your transition from course-work to full-time thesis research.

Doctoral students begin engaging in the research process as early in the program as possible. A first-year summer paper, which can be a replication or an extension of an existing study, provides early hands-on experience in research design, programming, data management, and statistical analysis.

Students must then complete a second-year paper based on an original research idea and present this research in early December of their third year to qualify as a Ph.D. candidate.

In the spring of their fourth year, students submit and present their dissertation proposal, which should make a substantial, significant, and original contribution to the field. Input from faculty during the proposal process outlines the work that students need to complete over the summer for their dissertation proposals to become their job market papers for the fall of their fifth year.

Research and Teaching Assistant Requirement

Doctoral students at the Carroll School are expected to serve as research assistants, teaching assistants, and/or instructors throughout their studies. Students work for a set number of hours per week, throughout the duration of their Ph.D. programs. In exchange, the Carroll School provides financial support for doctoral students in the form of a stipend and tuition remission.

Application link & deadlines.

Application Deadline:  The deadline to apply for Fall 2024 is January 9, 2024.

Application Fee: All applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable application fee of $100 USD.

Interviews: If selected, applicants will be invited to interview in early spring.

Admission Decisions: Applications are generally reviewed after the final deadline has passed. There is no specific decision notification date for Ph.D. programs. Final decisions are typically available by mid-spring.

Your current curriculum vitae should include your education, research, and professional information.

We also require  a separate Employment History, using the form provided within the online application.

Recommendations

Recommendations from two individuals who can provide an objective appraisal of your capacity for intensive graduate study and potential for professional success.

Transcripts

All applicants must possess a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. You must submit transcripts from every institution where you were enrolled in a degree-granting program. At the time of application, only a self-reported transcript is required but if you are admitted, we will require an official transcript sent directly from your degree-granting institution. Transcripts should include:

All grades received (including transfer credits and study abroad programs)

Cumulative GPA

Degree conferral information

Graduates of non-U.S. institutions must possess a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree. If admitted, international students are required to submit an official English translation of all academic credentials, along with a third-party degree verification from an agency such as  SpanTran or  World Education Services (WES) .

GMAT or GRE Scores

Applicants must submit GMAT or GRE scores from within the past five years. We accept both the GMAT Exam and GMAT Focus Edition. Our test codes are:

While Graduate Admissions does not have a preference between the GMAT or GRE, we encourage you to consult class profile data for average test scores in order to gauge where you stand.

English Proficiency

If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you are required to submit an English language proficiency exam score with your application. We accept TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores. We do not accept the Duolingo English Test.

Scores must be from within the past two years, and applicants must meet the following minimum scores:

You are eligible to waive the language test requirement if you meet either of the following criteria:

You have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree or a two-year master’s degree (or higher) at an institution where the medium language of instruction is English. You must have completed your degree in its entirety at the English-medium institution. The medium language of instruction must be indicated on your transcript or verified in an official letter from the institution.

You have worked in a full-time, post-degree position for at least two years in the United States or a country where English is an official language. NOTE: Working for a company that conducts its business in English in a country where English is not an official language will not qualify you for a language test waiver.

If you are eligible to waive the language test requirement, you do not need to submit a waiver request beforehand and can simply move forward with your application.

Required & Optional Essays

Applicants must submit a required essay discussing their research interests and career objectives. You may also submit an optional essay that addresses aspects of your candidacy that have not already been covered in other parts of the application.

The Department of Accountancy welcomes applications from superior students with a strong interest in and commitment to accounting research, scholarship, and teaching. We provide a high level of faculty mentorship to all of our students to prepare them for successful careers in teaching and research in leading academic institutions. To maintain excellence in our program, we limit the program to approximately 15 PhD candidates. Typically, two to four candidates are admitted to the program each year. Students are admitted to the doctoral program through the Illinois Graduate College . We encourage students to begin the program during the summer semester if possible.

Prerequisites

Background knowledge prerequisites for the PhD program include:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of fifteen hours of coursework in accounting
  • An intermediate undergraduate microeconomics course
  • Undergraduate courses in calculus (differential and integral) and linear algebra

Frequently asked questions, 1. application access -- online, online application password and access.

I'm having trouble accessing the Ph.D. Programs in the online application. What is the problem?

To find the Ph.D. Programs, log-in to your application. Once you are in the electronic application select Campus: University Park, Major: Business Administration – MS, Ph.D., Degree Ph.D. You can select the primary field (i.e., Accounting, Finance, etc. ) under "Program-Specific Questions" which you will find near the end of the application.

My password will not work. Why?

You may be entering the incorrect password. A common problem is that passwords are case sensitive. Be certain you are entering your password with the same capitalization and lower cases as appear in your confirmation e-mail. To have your login and password information re-sent to you, click the login link and follow the directions to have the information re-sent to you. If all else fails, please email the Ph.D. Programs office for assistance at [email protected] .

2. Application Deadlines

What are the application deadlines.

The deadline for completed applications for Fall 2024 admissions are as follows:

Management & Organization -  January 8, 2024

Accounting-  January 8, 2024

Supply Chain - January 12, 2024

Marketing-  January 12, 2024

Real Estate-  February 1, 2024

Finance-  February 1, 2024

However, because the application is comprehensive and you will be asked to submit transcripts and letters of recommendation, we recommend starting at least a month prior to the application deadline.

Will you consider late applications?

The electronic (GRADS) application MUST be completed by the deadline to be considered on-time. However, you may have as much as a week or two after the deadline has passed for transcripts and letters of recommendation to be received. Incomplete applications will NOT be forwarded to the faculty committees for review (see Application Materials Needed for more information). Occasionally a department will decide to extend their deadline in a particular recruitment season. However, this is not the norm. Please email the Ph.D. Programs at [email protected] BEFORE submitting a late application to be sure that the department will consider a late application as application fees are non-refundable.

What if I'm applying close to the deadline from a different time zone – what do you consider "on-time" in this case?

If you apply by the deadline in your timezone, your application will be considered on-time.

Can I receive a refund of my application fee if my application is late? If not, what are my options?

Application fees are non-refundable. If you do apply after the deadline to a department that is not accepting late applications, you may request that we move your application to the next application period.

3. Application Fee

How much is the application fee and what is the method of payment.

The application fee is $65 and it is non-refundable. We accept credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express), check or money order in U.S. dollars. You will receive instructions for payment during the application process. If paying by check or money order, please make it payable to The Pennsylvania State University . The canceled check will serve as your receipt. International money orders or checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Bank-to-bank transfers are not accepted. Please note that applications without fees cannot be processed.

Can the application fee be waived?

No. The application fee covers our costs to process applications and therefore cannot be waived.

Please note that on December 1, 2023, the international application fee will increase from $65 to $85 for those applying for spring 2025 admission or later. The fee update will not impact students applying for non-degree admission; domestic students; U.S. permanent residents, asylees, or refugees; or applicants seeking admission prior to spring 2025.  

4. Application Materials Needed

What materials are needed to apply to the smeal ph.d. program.

  • Read through the application instructions
  • Completed GRADS application
  • Resume/CV (including extra-curricular activities, community activities and an up-to-date work history)
  • Statement of Purpose (3 essay questions)
  • GMAT (preferred) or GRE (acceptable for all but the Accounting program) - please request official scores
  • TOEFL (international applicants – also see TOEFL waiver ) - please request official scores
  • Transcripts  (if transcripts do not show degree received and date you received your degree, include certificates/diploma)
  • Grade conversion chart or guide (if available)
  • Diploma and degree certificates are required from international applicants
  • At least two letters of reference

How do I submit supplementary materials?

You will enter your test scores, enter email addresses for your references, complete your Statement of Purpose, and upload your resume/CV in the GRADS system. Official test scores are needed at the time of admission. Certified and sealed transcripts, diploma and degree certificates need to be sent by the institution to the Graduate School via mail ONLY if offered admission to the program. 

Can I submit my application if I am missing a required item (i.e., GMAT/GRE results, originals of my transcripts)?

We cannot proceed with evaluating your application until all materials are submitted. However, if you are approaching an application deadline and are still missing an item, please contact our admission team by email at [email protected]  with the details of your specific situation.

5. Starting the Application Process

How do i receive an application package.

All applications are now processed online via the GRADS portal and information on programs is viewable on the Ph.D. Programs website.

What is the application process?

Applicants are required to complete the Graduate School's Electronic Application including remitting an application fee and submitting or uploading the required documentation.

6. Submitted Application Status and Decisions

Will you inform me when you receive my application.

Within one to three days after completing your application, the GRADS online application system will send you a message to let you know that your application was successfully submitted and how to make changes to your application. You will also receive an email with your PSU ID and PIN approximately 48 hours later. The PSU ID is a permanent ID number assigned to you starting from the time you are an applicant and will be your ID as a student. Therefore, you will want to retain these emails for future reference.

What can I expect after applying?

Once your application is listed as "complete", it will be sent to the department for review and no further information is available about the application status until the department has made a decision on your application. You have the ability to edit and upload additional information your application Status Page .

Will you inform me if my application is incomplete?

Once the deadline has passed, all submitted applications are reviewed for completion by the Ph.D. Programs staff. You may be contacted for additional materials during this phase. The Ph.D. Programs office will send individual emails to notify applicants if their application is incomplete and what material is missing to make the application complete. A complete application consists of a completed and paid electronic GRADS application submitted by the deadline, statement of purpose, resume, verified GMAT or GRE score, TOEFL score (if required), at least two references received and all transcripts scanned and uploaded from each institution attended. Please note that incomplete applications will not be submitted to the faculty committees. While it is helpful to upload your student score reports for the GMAT, GRE and/or TOEFL, it is not required for your application to be considered complete.

How many applications do you receive each year, and how many do you admit?

The number of completed applications is usually between 300 and 500. Less than 10% of applicants are offered admission, and usually 10 to 20 students matriculate each year.

When and how will I be notified of the committee's decision?

Once your application is complete, it is prepared for the department's faculty committees for review. The committee reviews will typically start within a few weeks after the deadline has passed. The admissions committee for each department will typically meet in late February and early March. Admission decisions are typically made in March and April.Decisions may be communicated by phone, mail or email and are communicated very shortly after they are available. Due to the number of applications, please do NOT contact the Ph.D. Programs for a decision as it is very unlikely that additional information will be available.

When do I need to make a decision if I receive an offer?

While it is helpful to us to receive a decision as soon as possible, you have until April 15th to make a decision for any college that belongs to the Council of Graduate Schools .

Can I defer admission?

An offer of admission with financial support is made for the upcoming academic year only. Acceptance of the offer may not be deferred. An accepted applicant who must postpone acceptance of an offer of admission may request that the application be reactivated for consideration the following year.

Can I request feedback on my application if I am not offered admission?

Due to the number of applications we receive each year, the admissions committee cannot offer feedback on individual applications.

7. Campus Interviews

Can i request an interview when applying.

A prospective candidate may be invited by the department for a campus interview at the expense of the college before the admission decision is made.

8. Current and Former Penn State Students

How do i apply if i'm a current or former graduate-level penn state student.

Information about Change of Major can be found on The Graduate School's website under Current Students, Change of Major/Degree. Do not submit a second application as this will only create a duplicate record. There is no application fee since you would have already paid it once as a graduate student.

Once the Change of Major form has been received and entered by the Graduate School, the Ph.D. Programs office will be able to see your application information in the GRADS system. However, you may need to manually submit the required supplemental documentation to the Ph.D. Programs office – you will know if you cannot upload materials to your GRADS application once the Change of Major form has been processed. Please scan and email supplementary information to [email protected] and ask your references to email reference letters to this address. Supplemental documentation includes the statement of purpose, reference letters, transcripts, resume/CV, and GMAT or GRE scores. As all of your educational experience as a Penn State student and previous to your time here at Penn State has been verified, you may email a copy of these transcripts to our office for admissions committee review. If you have educational experience after your time at Penn State, we will need two original transcripts from each of these institutions.

Most, if not all, supplemental materials can be scanned to a PDF file or emailed as a PDF file to the Ph.D. Program at [email protected] . However, ONLY if you are offered admission to the program, you may mail your official transcript to our office at the following address:

9. Financial Aid

All Ph.D. students receive a 20 hour/week Research/Teaching Assistantship that includes a tuition waiver, a subsidized student health plan, and a stipend for living expenses. There are also a limited number of scholarships and fellowships available. Additional assistance is provided through student conference travel funding, dissertation and research funding, opportunities for summer research and teaching, and summer tuition assistance funding.

Students may be supported for up to five years in the Ph.D. program, assuming satisfactory progress.

10. GPAs and Grade Conversion Chart

Is there a minimum grade point average (gpa) required for admission.

There is no minimum GPA requirement, although most of our accepted students have GPAs above 3.5.

What is the grade conversion chart?

A grade conversion chart would be whatever your university would use to convert their grade scale to a 4.0 scale as is used in the USA. Typically, it would contain columns with the grade system used at the university in one column and the equivalent grade using a 4.0 scale in the next column. Please upload this information to your application, if it is available.

11. International Students

What are the eligibility requirements for international students.

International students follow the same application process as domestic students. International students are required to submit a TOEFL test score (or meet the requirements for a waiver) and visa documentation. Please note that we do not accept IELTS test scores.

How will I be contacted about visa documentation and where can I find more information?

Once you are accepted into the Ph.D. Program, the University Office of Global Programs will contact you by email with a link to use to submit your visa documentation. Documentation can be express shipped via a third-party provider. The Global Programs website contains a lot of information that is helpful for international students, from financial and eligibility information to housing.

What are the financial guarantee requirements for international students?

Financial guarantee requirements can be found at the Global Programs website. Keep in mind that all accepted students receive a graduate assistantship, tuition waiver, and subsidized medical insurance as part of their offer, which serves as part (if not the majority) of the financial guarantee.

Is there financial aid available for non-United States citizens?

Yes. There are a limited number of scholarships and fellowships available.

12. Other Penn State Graduate Programs

What master programs are offered at the smeal college of business.

The M.S. degree at the Smeal College of Business is not offered as a stand-alone degree program, but only as an option for Ph.D. students. Other residential Master programs at Smeal include the Master of Business Administration (MBA) , One-Year Master of Accounting (MAcc) , Master of Management and Organizational Leadership (MOL), Master of Corporate Finance (CFIN), and Master of Real Estate Analysis and Development (READ). An integrated Master of Accounting (MAcc) program is also offered as a joint program along with a Smeal bachelor degree.

The Master of Professional Studies in Supply Chain Management is offered on-line only through World Campus, as is the Master's in Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Master's in Marketing Analytics and Insights, the Master's in Strategic Management and Executive Leadership, Master of Professional Studies in Enterprise Architecture and Business Transformation, Master of Professional Studies in Data Analytics -- Business Analytics Option, and Master of Professional Studies in Date Analytics -- Marketing Analytics Option. In addition, there are also numerous Graduate Certificates available. ( https://www.smeal.psu.edu/pgp ). 

How can I find out more about other graduate degree programs offered at Penn State?

13. Ph.D. Program at Smeal

What primary fields are offered in the ph.d. program at smeal college of business what degree is listed on the diploma.

The Smeal Ph.D. degree is in Business Administration offers six distinct primary fields or areas of emphasis within Business Administration from which to choose: Accounting, Finance, Insurance & Real Estate, Management & Organization, Marketing, and Supply Chain & Information Systems. You MUST choose only one of the six primary fields during the application process and may one submit only ONE application for consideration.

How are the primary fields indicated?

All students, regardless of primary field, will receive a Ph.D. in Business Administration. Primary field information will be viewable on the transcript.

How can I find information about areas of research for faculty or departments?

Information about the research activities of departments and their faculty may be found by clicking on the individual department listing on the left navigation bar of the website.

How long does a Ph.D. take?

The required coursework for a Ph.D. takes two to three years depending on your prior coursework. The defense of a thesis proposal, performance of thesis research, and defense of the final thesis will typically take an additional two years. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect the Ph.D. to take four to five years to complete on campus.

When are students admitted?

Student admissions are in the fall semester only. The program is a full-time commitment, on campus only. 

Can I study for a Ph.D. on a part-time basis? Is distance learning or an online program available?

The Ph.D. program is full-time during the period of coursework. Most students also pursue their thesis full-time for two years. While you may pursue graduate-level coursework and degrees at the World Campus , there are no Smeal College of Business Ph.D.-level courses offered through distance or online learning.

14. Placement

Do most graduates enter the academic field.

The majority of students who enter the doctoral program assume a faculty position at an academic/research institution upon completing the Ph.D. degree program. Our goal is to place our students at the top universities in their field.

15. Qualifications

What type of people study for the ph.d..

Doctoral students come from a variety of backgrounds. Their most important distinguishing features are an eagerness to discover new things and an aptitude for research methods in business. We look for students who want to research and teach at top business schools.

Do I need a master degree to apply?

While a master degree is not required, the majority of our accepted students complete their master degree prior to admission for the Ph.D. degree. The equivalent of a four-year American baccalaureate degree is required for application.

Do I need prior work experience?

Not necessarily, but it is considered when provided.

16. Re-applying

May i reapply if i wasn't accepted previously.

Yes. Candidates who submitted an application to a Doctoral Program and were not offered admission may re-apply but not for the same academic year, e.g., an applicant who was not admitted for fall 2011 may re-apply for fall 2012. You will want to update your application in the GRADS system (references, resume, statement of purpose, etc.). Please do not create a new application as it will only be flagged and merged with your old application at a later date. Since this is a new review, the application fee will need to be paid again.

Do you keep applications and materials submitted in prior years?

We do not keep materials submitted in prior years, unless an applicant submitted an application. Applications and all supplemental materials (including test scores and transcripts) are kept on file for up to three years after the year of application, and then destroyed. If you submitted an application during this time, you may request that we pull your supplemental materials from your previous application for use during this application cycle by emailing us at [email protected] . Include your full name, PSU ID number and the admission period to which you applied (i.e., Fall 2011).

17. Recommendation / Reference Letters

How shall my referees submit their recommendation letter.

We prefer that referees provide recommendation letters electronically via the GRADS application system. You will be asked to provide email addresses for your referees during the application process – please verify that the email addresses you provide are valid and correct. Emails to recommenders are not sent by the GRADS system until the application is complete. You will receive an email when each reference is submitted and you can also check on references received by logging into your application through " Graduate School Application "

My reference is not willing to or cannot submit a recommendation letter via email. What should I do?

If necessary, your referees may submit letters via mail to the Ph.D. Program . Please note that if your referee sends their recommendation letter via mail, you will not be able to tell that the letter was received in the GRADS system.

Whom should I pick to write my recommendations?

Recommendations should be from at least two persons whom you feel are able to present an accurate evaluation of you. Each individual will be contacted by e-mail via the online application system, therefore, it is important that you provide a valid e-mail address for each reference. Instructors, academic advisers and recent work or military supervisors are most appropriate. Recommendations from personal friends, relatives, or family acquaintances are not appropriate.

May I submit more than two recommendations? How many recommendation letters are needed?

Yes. You must have at least two recommendations for your application to be considered complete, so for this reason it is a good idea to list more than two referees in your application. To add more than two references to your application, please send referee's information to [email protected]  after you have submitted your application.

Is there a recommendation form or specific format for my referees to use?

There is no form for recommendation letters – please ask your referees to tell us why they feel you would be a good fit for the program to which you apply and please ask them to be sure to include their contact information.

18. Statement of Purpose (Essay)

What are the essay questions on the application.

  • What are your career objectives in pursuing a doctoral degree in Business Administration?
  • Why have you chosen to apply to the Pennsylvania State University for graduate study?
  • Describe any previous research which you have done as well as the kind of research you wish to pursue during your graduate studies and beyond.

19. GMAT and GRE Tests

What is the graduate management admission test (gmat) test.

The GMAT test is a standardized test that measures the verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills of an individual applicant, which can be a predictor of an applicant's ability to be successful in a rigorous academic environment. The GMAT test is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

What is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Test?

The GRE test is one of two standardized tests used by the Ph.D. Programs to measure an applicant's verbal and quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytic writing skills, which can help us determine the probability of an applicant's success in a rigorous academic environment. This test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Will you accept the revised GRE test scores?

Yes. ETS provides percentiles and score keys for colleges to compare the new revised scores with the old scores.

Is the GMAT/GRE required?

GMAT test scores are preferred, but the GRE is an acceptable alternative for admission to the Smeal Ph.D. Program. Official score reports must be sent directly from the reporting agency (you MUST have GMAC or ETS send your scores electronically to the Penn State Smeal Ph.D. Program).

Once you request your scores to be sent, please allow 3 weeks for us to process your score and update your application.

I need to have my official GMAT score report sent to Smeal. What is your school code?

Should I upload a copy of my student report to my application?

Yes, this is very helpful and may speed the verification process.

If I already have an advanced degree, do I still have to submit a GRE or GMAT scores to apply?

Yes. A GMAT (required for Accounting program applicants) or a GRE test score is required of all applicants.

Are there circumstances in which the GMAT/GRE can be waived?

No. A GMAT (required for Accounting program applicants) or a GRE test score is required of all applicants.

How long is the GMAT/GRE valid?

Scores are valid for five years. Your GMAT score must be less than five years old at the time of your application.

What is the average GMAT/GRE score for accepted students? Is there a minimum score?

While there is no minimum score, the average GMAT score of accepted students is 650-760, although the recent averages of incoming classes have been over 700. The average GRE scores of accepted students is 800 quantitative and 610 verbal. This translates to approximately 165 quantitative and 160 verbal on the new scale.

If I take the GMAT or GRE more than once, which score will you consider?

We will consider the highest score.

20. TOEFL and IELTS Tests

What is the toefl test.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a test used by colleges and universities to determine English proficiency.

What is the school code to send the TOEFL to your program?

The Smeal school code for TOEFL is 2660 (Pennsylvania State University All Campuses, University Park).

I have taken the IELTS. Do I need to take the TOEFL?

We accept only TOEFL scores. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores are NOT accepted.

How long is the TOEFL test valid?

The TOEFL test is valid for two years. This validity period is set by ETS, the official group that administers the TOEFL test.

In order for the test scores to be valid, the official scores must be received and uploaded in the system prior to the expiration date. Once the official scores expire, Penn State can no longer receive them.

How do I know if I need to submit a TOEFL test score? Is there a waiver for the TOEFL test?

International applicants who have received a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in one of the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. These countries include: American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, England, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Wales. We will see this in the education section of the application. Candidates who are U.S. Permanent Residents do not need to submit a TOEFL score. All others need to submit a TOEFL score.

*U.S. citizens and permanent residents qualify for TOEFL wavier, regardless of native language.

What is the language of instruction? What is the minimum TOEFL score needed?

The language of instruction at Penn State is English. Generally, the better the test score, the more likely a student will succeed in the program. Note that computer-based TOEFL scores are no longer valid or accepted. TOEFL test score minimums are below:

Internet-based TOEFL minimum score: 80 (23 speaking)

Paper-based TOEFL minimum score: 585

21. Transfer Students

Can i transfer credits from prior graduate work and have it apply to the ph.d..

Up to ten credits can be transferred from a graduate degree program if the degree has not been conferred, subject to the approval of the Ph.D. Coordinator in your department. All transfer credit must be substantiated by the former institution as having at least a B quality whatever grading system is in place (e.g., this includes P/F grading). Any transfers are usually less than the maximum. Please note that you must complete an application with all required materials by deadline regardless of your status at another school.

22. Transcripts, Diplomas and/or Degree Certificates

What is required for transcripts, diplomas and/or degree certificates.

We require that you scan and upload your official transcript in PDF format to your GRADS application for application review. International students are required to submit diplomas and/or degree certificates in addition to the transcripts. *Please make sure your degree received and graduation date is noted on the documentation you submit. ONLY if you are offered admission to the program, you will need to send the registrar of every college or university you've attended a request for one official transcript. If the transcript is not in English, a certified translation must also be included along with the original transcript. The registrar will then return the official transcripts to you so that you may send the unopened official transcript to The Graduate School . 

I'm an international student residing in the U.S. and I only have one copy of my transcript, diploma and/or degree certificate -- what if I can't get two certified copies of my transcript, diploma and/or degree certificate sent by the institution by the deadline?

In extenuating circumstances, you may request an exception. To do this, upload your transcript to your application, send an email to [email protected] explaining the circumstances and/or when we can expect to receive a certified copy, and request that the admissions committee consider the uploaded transcript for review. However, please note that unverified transcripts, diplomas and/or degree certificates WILL delay the admissions process as this documentation must be verified prior to admission and that applications without official transcripts will be considered incomplete if you have not received permission for an exception. Third-party transcripts (i.e., from your current institution) are NOT acceptable.

Do you accept electronic transcripts?

Yes, we will accept an official, electronically transmitted transcript that is sent directly from the college or university to our program at [email protected]. The transcript must include a transcript key (ledger) so that we may verify the authenticity of the transcript.

PhD Programs Application Requirements

The PhD Program is designed for students who intend to pursue full-time study , with entry in Autumn Semester only. Applications for the 2024-2025 academic year will be available on August 15, 2023. 

The application deadline for those applying to Accounting, and Operations Management is December 15, 2023 and for Finance, Logistics, International Business, Strategy and Entrepreneurship applications will close on January 15, 2024.  

Those applying to the are strongly encouraged to have all of their materials submitted and ready for review before the deadline.  These specialties will evaluate applications on a rolling basis.

Note: Marketing and Organizational Behavior/Human Resource Management will not be accepting applications for Fall 2024  

The following materials are required for the PhD application:

1. A completed online application form

  • If you are a current or previous OSU graduate student, you will also need to submit a Transfer of Graduate Program Form .

2. Application fee

  • A non-refundable application fee of $60 is required for domestic applicants; $70 for international applicants.
  • If you have previously attended a graduate program in OSU, no fee is required.

3. GRE or GMAT test score

  • Official scores must be sent to The Ohio State University using the GRE institution code 1592 (department code 4299), GMAT institution code ZLJ-9D-76 for the PhD in Business Administration, or GMAT institution code ZLJ-9D-02 for the PhD in Accounting and Management Information Systems. Please note, we are unable to accept copies of mailed GMAT of GRE scores. We require that scores be submitted electronically directly from the Electronic Test Service's website using the codes above. Kindly allow 2-3 for your GMAT/GRE scores to be processed after ordering them through ETS.
  • All programs accept either GMAT or GRE. Please note that the Accounting and MIS program strongly prefers the GMAT. Scores are valid within 5 years of the application submission date.
  • 4. TOEFL Score (International Students Only)
  • The Ohio State University requires official TOEFL scores from all international applicants. We will also accept the IELTS and/or MELAB  and/or Duolingo in lieu of the TOEFL.  Scores must be sent to The Ohio State University using the institution code 1592.
  • Applicants who are citizens of or who have received a bachelor’s degree or higher from one of the following countries are exempt from the English proficiency requirement: Australia, Belize, the British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States and Wales.

5. Academic Transcripts

  • You are required to submit copies of transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended, including study abroad and transfer credit.
  • Upload a scanned copy of each official transcript to the online application. DO NOT upload web-generated advising reports, as they will not be accepted. Please note that scanned copies of transcripts are considered unofficial; a transcript is only considered official if issued to The Ohio State University directly from the institution.
  • You will only need to submit official transcripts if admitted to the program. These must be sent directly from each institution attended. Certified English translations must be enclosed if the originals are not in English. Admissions Criteria

Each year, from an application pool of approximately 500, the Michael G. Foster School of Business PhD Program admits a class of approximately 15 highly qualified PhD students. In selecting applicants, we give primary consideration to academic potential and aspiration. Each applicant is evaluated in terms of the following:

  • Academic accomplishments to date
  • Institutions attended and graduate and undergraduate grades and courses taken
  • Scholarships, awards, and honors earned
  • Graduate Management Admission test (GMAT) scores, or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • TOEFL iBT and/or IELTS scores (if applicable)
  • Academic and other references
  • Relevant nonacademic experience
  • Statement of Purpose: academic objectives and past or future experiences/contributions (including to advance the Foster School’s commitment to diversity and inclusion).

Admission decisions are also influenced by the availability of faculty, the number of students already in the program, and the availability of financial support in each major area of specialization.

Students are admitted Autumn Quarter only. Applications for admission must be received by the department specific deadline listed below. Due to possible administrative or mail delays, we suggest that applicants submit all materials well ahead of the deadlines to ensure full consideration.

Selection information

Applications are sorted and distributed to the relevant departments immediately after application deadlines. Each department has a committee that reviews all the applicants to their discipline, identifies the top candidates, and provides that information to the PhD Program office.. We extend offers based on the faculty-generated lists and the number of openings available to each department. We aim to have all offers out by April 15 th .

Please keep in mind the following: A highly qualified incoming student will typically have a very high GMAT/GRE score (e.g., 90th percentile), a very high GPA (e.g., 3.9) often in both undergraduate and graduate level work at highly regarded institutions and they will have some, if not extensive, experience with research.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the past research and current interests of department faculty in their desired area of specialization. Regarding research, faculty can be contacted directly. For department-specific questions about the program, contact the area coordinators using information available under the Areas of Specialization tab.

Required Application Materials

Transcripts.

Uploading unofficial transcripts via the online application system is a requirement to complete the Foster Ph.D. application. You should not have official transcripts mailed to the University of Washington unless we directly request them.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. We do not accept additional letters.

Letters of recommendation are submitted via the online application system. In the online application, you will submit the names and email addresses of three recommenders. The system will send them an email that provides instructions on how to submit the recommendation letter on your behalf.

The admissions committees prefer recommendations from academics familiar with your scholastic and research capabilities; those from faculty members with whom you have worked in a research capacity are particularly valued.

Curriculum Vitae

Submit a copy of your CV. Be sure it includes relevant experience not addressed elsewhere in your application materials.

Statement of Purpose

This can also be referred to as statement of academic objectives. Please state as clearly as possible your objective in pursuing a PhD program and your areas of interest for teaching and research.

As part of or in addition to this statement, please comment on how your past experiences and/or future contributions will advance the Foster School’s commitment to diversity and inclusion; the  DEI Primer  provides clarification on how to do this.

GMAT or GRE scores

Applicants are required to submit either the GRE or the GMAT regardless of previous experience and/or advanced degrees. The GRE At Home and the GMAT Online exam will be accepted.

Copies of the score reports should be uploaded into the application. Test scores on either the GRE or GMAT are accepted only if taken within the last five (5) years.

Unofficial test score reports may be used during the application review process; however, official test scores are required if admission is recommended.

Scores are considered “official” when sent directly to the University of Washington from the testing agencies: ETS for the GRE score and GMAC for the GMAT score. If submitting GMAT, then request that GMAC send your official scores to the University of Washington, school code 459-75-53. If submitting GRE, then request that ETS send your official scores to the University of Washington, school code 4854. Allow three to four weeks for our office to receive your scores.

TOEFL or IELTS scores

Applicants to the Michael G. Foster School of Business, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following ways to be eligible for funding:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or from an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, or the United Kingdom, where English is the medium of instruction. The student must have been in residence on campus while enrolled at the degree-granting school. ( Note : A master’s degree does not satisfy this requirement).
  • Hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Juris Doctor (JD) from a regionally accredited institution located in the United States where English is the medium of instruction.
  • TOEFL iBT: Total score of 92, with a minimum of 23 in the speaking section
  • TOEFL myBest: Total score of 92, with a minimum of 23 in the speaking section
  • IELTS: Total score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in the speaking section

If admitted with the speaking score minimums mentioned above, students must satisfy UW policy 5.2 within their first quarter of enrollment to remain eligible for funding. The target language scores to satisfy UW policy 5.2 are as follows:

  • TOEFL iBT: Total score of 92, with a minimum of 26 in the speaking section
  • TOEFL myBest: Total score of 92, with a minimum of 26 in the speaking section
  • IELTS: Total score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in the speaking section

Funding information

The School’s goal is to provide financial support for at least four years for all doctoral students who make satisfactory progress toward the completion of the degree and maintain a high standard of performance in their assignments. Financial aid in the form of tuition waivers, teaching and research assistantships, fellowships and scholarships is available in the Ph.D. Program. The objectives of financial support packages are to help fund the student’s educational program and to provide the student with supervised professional experience in both teaching and research. The financial packages for more senior students are designed to allow them to focus on their own individual work (i.e., the dissertation). At this stage, many students also successfully compete for national fellowships and research grants.

Financial Aid Form

Since the requirements for several of the School’s fellowships and scholarships list financial need as one of the criteria for selection, applicants who are admitted to the program will be strongly encouraged to submit a  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . University policy requires that this application be filled before a student can be considered for any fellowship or scholarship that specifies financial need as one of the criteria. Applications can be filled out and submitted at the  FAFSA website . Note that applicants with substantial income in the year before entering a doctoral program may still qualify for financial need based on projected income for the first year in the program.

Graduate Admission Requirements and Process

Plan description.

The Master of Science in Accounting is a professional degree designed to enhance the skills of those planning careers in accounting. The program of study includes advanced coursework in topics such as auditing, financial accounting, accounting systems, and taxation. The Master of Science in Accounting requires a minimum of 30 credit hours above the bachelor's degree.

The A.A.C.S.B. – International Association for Management Education accredits the Master of Science in Accounting.

Admission Requirements

Each student must satisfy the following requirements for admission into the Master of Science in Accounting:

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

2. A minimum GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

3. Students must have satisfactorily completed introductory financial accounting.

4. Official results of the GMAT or GRE test.  Students may qualify for a GMAT waiver based on having 3.25 Accounting GPA from an AACSB accredited school. 

5. Compliance with the Graduate College admission standards.

Students who have not completed all the following courses (or equivalent courses) as part of their bachelor's degree may be required to complete them as a condition of their admission prior to graduation from the Master of Science in Accounting:

  • ACC 601 – Financial Reporting I
  • ACC 602 – Financial Reporting II
  • ACC 609 – Accounting Information Systems
  • ACC 610 – Federal Taxation
  • ACC 670 – Auditing and Assurance Services
  • Note: These courses will not count toward the 30 credits required for the Master of Science in Accounting.

Application materials for each semester must be filed at the Graduate College according to the information below.

Required Materials

  • A complete application with non-refundable fee. The online application tool is where you submit your information and required materials. The Accounting Department does not require a separate application.
  • Official Transcripts of all college-level course work previously taken. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded into the application and emailed to the director of the MS in Accounting program to speed up the admission process, but official transcripts must be submitted to the address below for your admission decision to be finalized. Nevada Residency Status

For tuition purposes, all new graduate students are classified out-of-state until Nevada residency is determined via the residency application process. This includes students who completed their undergraduate degree at UNLV as in-state student. In order to obtain Nevada residency, you must download the residency application and submit it along with the required supporting documentation by the first day of the semester in which you are applying for residency. Accounting  is one of seven majors offered through FSU’s College of Business’ Ph.D. in Business Administration. The major admits two or three candidates each fall, and the program takes four to five years to complete. 

  • Emphasizes capital markets, decision-making, financial reporting and assurance services

  Program Requirements

Prerequisites.

All Accounting doctoral students must complete prerequisite courses in Finance as well as undergraduate level courses in Statistics, Calculus, and Linear Algebra as well as doctoral level courses in Finance. The Accounting Program Director must approve courses satisfying the above prerequisites or exceptions to the policy.

Major  Requirements

All Accounting doctoral students must complete courses in three areas: Tools for Analytical Research (TAR), Primary Accounting and Support.

I. Tools for Analytical Research (TAR) area

In the TAR area, students typically take a selection of courses from the disciplines of statistics, economics, and/or finance. These courses provide the tools and skills necessary to understand and conduct doctoral-level research. The TAR area in accounting consists of six courses and students must earn a grade of "B" or better in each course to satisfy the TAR requirement. Note that this requirement means that TAR courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Students must take the following four TAR courses:

ECO 5403 Static Optimization (Microeconomics) MAR 6636 Quantitative Methods FIN 6804 Foundations of Financial Theory FIN 6842 Research Methods in Finance

Plus two of the following, depending on your track of study:

ECO 5416 Econometrics 1 (Archival Track) ECO 5423 Econometrics 2 (Archival Track) PSY 6919 Research Design and Analysis 1 (Behavioral Track) PSY 6919 Research Design and Analysis 2 (Behavioral Track)

II. Primary Accounting Coursework

The primary area courses and seminars provide opportunities for in-depth study. The following doctoral seminars and courses are required in accounting:

ACG 6885 Intro to Accounting Research (Fall) ACG 6696 Auditing Seminar (Spring) ACG 6896 Capital Markets Seminar (Fall) ACG 6939 Advanced Topics Seminar (Spring) ACG 6916 Research Paper Requirement

In addition to these courses, first and second year students will be registered to participate in a professional development series (GEB 6931). The development series is designed to introduce doctoral students to the roles and responsibilities of faculty, including research ethics, communication with faculty at other universities, the research review process, balancing research, teaching and service, among other topics.

The Accounting Research Colloquium (ARC) meets regularly (typically on Fridays) to share the results of recent research conducted by FSU faculty and doctoral students and by invited scholars from other universities. Attendance at the colloquium is required of all accounting doctoral students. All students also meet with a rotating faculty guide to discuss the invited scholar’s paper ahead of colloquium. For second year students, the professional development seminar requirement will be fulfilled through pre-colloquium participation.

Each student must complete a first-year paper proposal and a second- year research paper (ACG 6916). The first-year paper proposal is developed with the assistance of the Accounting Faculty during the first- year research assistantship. The first-year proposal is presented in the ARC at the end of the spring semester. The Accounting Ph.D. Program Committee will evaluate the proposal and presentation to determine whether the student is making substantial progress towards the degree. Unsatisfactory progress towards the degree results in dismissal from the program.

The second-year research paper is based on independent research by the student during the second year of the program under the supervision of a faculty member. It is the student’s responsibility to seek out at least one faculty mentor who will approve a written proposal by the spring term of the student’s second program year. Failure to obtain approval prior to the scheduled timing of the accounting preliminary examination may result in dismissal from the program. The second-year paper is presented in the ARC during the fall semester of the third year. Failure to present the paper during the fall semester of the third year may result in dismissal from the program. The Accounting Ph.D. Program Committee will evaluate the paper and presentation to determine whether the student is making substantial progress towards the degree. Unsatisfactory progress towards the degree results in dismissal from the program.

With the exception of ACG 6916, students must earn a grade of "B" or better in each course to satisfy the primary area requirement. Students must earn a grade of "S" in ACG 6916. Note that this requirement means that only ACG 6916 is taken on an S/U basis to satisfy the primary area requirement.

III. Support Area Coursework

Support area courses are selected to complement the primary area of study and to allow the student to pursue further his or her research interests. Normally, two courses are required in the support area. Support area course work is taken within and outside the College of Business. The support area will be a function of the student’s particular field of study and could include courses from Psychology, Statistics, Finance or Economics. Specific courses are selected in consultation with the Accounting Ph.D. Program Director. Courses must be approved by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. Students must earn a grade of "B" or better in each course to satisfy the support area requirement. Note that this requirement means that all support area courses must be taken for a letter grade. The Support Area courses cannot be used to satisfy other requirements.

Sample Course Sequence

Students enter the program in the summer semester prior to Fall matriculation and complete ACG 6939 along with any deficient pre-requisites (e.g., linear algebra).

  Application Process

Admission decisions are made by the college’s Doctoral Admissions Committee and are based on a combination of factors, including prior academic record from accepted universities; GRE or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores taken within the past five years; letters of recommendation; experience; record of accomplishments. Admission is competitive and focused on students with grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher and GMAT scores of at least 600 or GRE scores of at least 155 on each section of the revised GRE.

Application Checklist

  • Login to  admissions.fsu.edu/gradapp (applications will only be accepted through this portal).
  • Begin your application by logging in with your FSUID or clicking the link to register to get one.
  • Complete your online application form and submit.
  • This will generate automated email sent to your references by our system to request that they submit a recommendation for you and answer a series of standardized questions.
  • Submit your Statement of Purpose (2-3 pages).
  • Submit a current resume or C.V.
  • Pay the nonrefundable $30 application fee.
  • Request that each college or university you have attended submit an official transcript to FSU (see below for email/address).
  • Transcripts are considered official if they are sent directly to FSU (either through the U.S. mail or electronically) by your undergraduate or graduate institution.
  • Request that official GMAT or GRE scores (and TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo/Cambridge C1 Advanced Level/Michigan Language Assessment, if applicable) be submitted to FSU (see below for email/address)
  • Test scores will only be considered official if sent directly from the testing service. The code for ETS to send (GRE and TOEFL) scores to FSU is 5219. The code to send GMAT scores to FSU is PN8K567.
  • An English proficiency exam score (TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo/Cambridge C1 Advanced Level/Michigan Language Assessment) must be submitted for international applicants whose native language is not English or who have not received a college degree from an institution where the instruction is primarily in English.

International Applicants

International applicants should visit gradschool.fsu.edu/admissions/international-admissions for information concerning financial responsibilities, degree equivalency, etc.

English Language Proficiency Exam International applicants whose native language is not English or who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in an English-speaking country are required to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL,) the International English Language Testing System (IELTS,) the Pearson Test of English (PTE,) Duolingo, Cambridge C1 Advanced Level, or Michigan Language Assessment and submit official test results in order to be admitted to Florida State University. The College of Business requires a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test, a minimum of 7.0 on the IELTS exam , or a minimum of 66 on the PTE , a minimum score of 120 on Duolingo , a minimum score of 180 on Cambridge C1 Advanced Level , or a minimum score of 55 on the Michigan Language Assessment taken within the past two (2) years.

  Program Costs

Ph.D. students typically take 27-33 credit hours each year. Here are the estimated program costs for the 2023-2024 academic year:

  • Florida residents: $479.32 (tuition plus fees) per credit hour.  Total estimated program cost is $12,941.64 - $15,817.56 per year.
  • Non-Florida residents: $1,110.72 (tuition plus fees) per credit hour.  Total estimated program cost is $29,989.44 - $36,653.76 per year.

Note: These costs do not include required books, supplies for courses, or required health insurance. Costs are subject to change.   Residency Information

The doctoral program is a full-time program that lasts five years. Students should plan to live in the Tallahassee area year-round, including summers. Our program is not set up for individuals who wish to take courses part time or online.

  Financial Assistance

The College of Business awards financial assistance to applicants based on academic criteria and performance. The goal of the college is to provide assistantships and/or fellowships to all of our admitted doctoral students, subject to overall enrollment and fiscal limitations. Most doctoral students who request funding, who maintain a satisfactory level of academic and work performance, and who are in residence receive financial assistance from the college. Annual stipends and supplementary assistance such as travel expenses for conference attendance will vary among cohorts and programs. Students who are not Florida residents should note that tuition waivers associated with assistantships only cover the out-of-state portion of their tuition for year one of the program. Out-of-state tuition waivers are generally not available for years two through five for international students.   Doctoral students on assistantship are supported for four full academic years, contingent upon satisfactory performance in the program. Eligibility for fifth-year support is considered for a student having made substantial progress toward placement at a research-oriented university.
