The Kaziranga National Park of Assam is located in the floodplain ecosystem of the Brahmaputra River and hence the flood is the annual feature of the park. Amidst of it, the management for survival of the park along with its spectacular thriving is admirable. However, the perennial flood hurts the park at large carrying tragedies of different kinds such as land erosion, siltation of the water bodies, habitat degradation, damage of physical infrastructure, and exacerbate the accidents of the animals on the NH-37 and the poaching of the helpless animals. Conversely, the flood paybacks the park through nourishing and reviving its ecosystem in several ways such as refill the wetlands, refresh grasslands and remove invasive species, on annual basis. These, otherwise, would entail harder job and hence, a huge cost for the park management. Against this backdrop, an attempt has been made to examine to what extent, the flood is a doom for the park, and is a boon in the park through investi...

The Kaziranga National Park is a forest-edged riverine grassland inhabited by the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as a wide diversity of animals. The park is situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River at the foot of the Mikir 5 Hills. National Highway 37 forms the southern boundary and the northern boundary is the river Brahmaputra and covers an area of about 430km2. The Brahmaputra River flows by Kaziranga National Park in a braided course for about 53 km. Sequential changes in the position of banklines of the river due to consistent bank erosion have been studied from Survey of India topographic maps of 1912–1916 and 10 1972, satellite IRS LISS III images from 1998 to 2008 using GIS. Study of bank line shift due to the bank erosion around Kaziranga has been carried out for the periods 1912–1916 to 1972, 1972 to 1998 and 1998 to 2008. The amounts of the bank area lost due to erosion and gained due to sediment deposition are estimated separately. The total area eroded during 1912–1916 to 1972 was more (84.87 km2) as compared 15 to accretion due to sediment deposition (24.49 km2), the total area eroded was also more in 1972–1998 (44.769 km2) as compared to accretion (29.47 km2) and the total area eroded was again more in 1998–2008 (20.41 km2) as compared to accretion (7.89 km2). The rates of erosion during 1912–1916 to 1970, 1970 to 1998, and 1998 to 2008 were 1.46, 1.59 and 1.021 km2 per year, respectively. During the entire period 20 (1912–1916 to 2008) of study the erosion on the whole was 150.04 km2 and overall accretion was 61.86km2 resulting in a loss of 88.188km2 area of the park. The maximum amounts of shift of the bankline during 1912–1916 to 1970, 1970 to 1998, and 1998 to 2008 were 4.58 km, 3.36 km, and 1.92 km, respectively, which amount to the rates of shift as 0.078, 0.12 and 0.096km per year, respectively. A lineament and a few faults 25 have controlled the trend of the course of the Brahmaputra around Kaziranga area. The main cause of erosion of the Brahmaputra is the loose non-cohesive sediments of the bank throughout the park. The braided channel of the river strikes the bank directly and undermines the silty bank causing overhanging blocks to be carried away easily by the river current. In future deposition is likely to be more in upstream or eastern part of Kaziranga and erosion in middle part of Kaziranga national park area due to the river Brahmaputra. Antierosion measures have been adopted only in a few places to check bank erosion at Kaziranga.

The Panna tiger reserve is one of the best examples of the most successful tiger re-introduction programme from zero tiger in 2009 to 54 in 2019. The Government of India has approved the proposal of interlinking of the two rivers, viz. Ken in Madhya Pradesh and Betwa in Uttar Pradesh, to provide surplus water to the local population of drought prone areas of Bundelkhand, UP. This river interlinking will be submerging around 58.03 sq. km of the Critical Tiger Habitat. Our study on vegetation and major prey species of tiger shows higher densities in submerged areas. The NITI Ayog report of 2019 provided one of the best example of the locals of Jakhni village of Banda district of Bundelkhand which managed the severe water crisis. The sensitivity of tiger reserve that project involves need a close attention, which this essay attempts at arguing.

The conservation history of Kaziranga National Park has traversed many a path since it was first recognised as a 'game sanctuary' in 1916. The unique aesthetics and richness of its biodiversity, severely afflicted by natural and anthropogenic interventions now and then, has necessitated conservation of this wildlife reserve. An outcome of the conservation process pertains to disruptions in livelihood of the local communities, that have for generations, used the park's natural resources and therefore, had become a part of its natural evolution. Hundreds of people have lost their livelihoods and violent confrontations have become a typical scene, with the communities being utterly left out of the conservation process. In this light, the present essay envisages discussing the centrality of community participation in the conservation of Kaziranga National Park vis-à-vis a conjugation of the conservation process and livelihood aspirations of the local people.

Emilie CREMIN

Every year, during the monsoon season, millions of people are affected by floods in India. In Northeast India, the Brahmaputra River regularly submerges the lowest lands of the State of Assam, where different communities depend on the natural resources of the flood plains for their livelihood. Even if they are frequently disrupted by natural hazards, different adjustment mechanisms have been established through centuries between the riverside dwellers and geophysical constraints. Originally, living in the Himalayan State of Arunachal Pradesh, the Mising tribe i has been migrating out to the Brahmaputra flood plains of Assam since the 13 th century, most probably in search of fertile land (Lego 2005: 10, Mipun 1993: 36). They have defined their territory during a long process of migration and adaptation to successively new environmental constraints. ii Consequently, they have integrated with the diversity of socio-ethnical groups such as the Ahoms, the Nepalis, the Bangladeshis, the ex-tea tribes and others, who are gathered in the plain. Currently, Mising villages are mainly settled in upper Assam along a narrow strip of wetland situated between the Himalayan foothills and the river, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, as well as on the opposite south bank. During their migration, some tribal clans crossed the large braided river to reach the territory of the Bokakhat Subdivision of the Golaghat district where Kaziranga National Park (KNP), classified as a UNESCO World Heritage reserve iii , is situated today. Because they have been living for so long in the river floodplain, the members of the Mising Tribe have accumulated extensive knowledge of the abundant biodiversity and the various ecosystems present within the Brahmaputra wetlands. In order to overcome the ecological constraints of the river hydrosystem (i.e., floods and erosion), the tribal society has

Abstract Kaziranga National Park (henceforth, KNP) is a protected area situated in the North Eastern part of India. The park is a World Heritage Site and has a very rich ecosystem. KNP is an attractive tourist destination and occupies a significant place in the life and culture of the people living in this part of the country. Conservation of the park started more than a century ago, and local people have often contested such efforts. This is mainly because indigenous people have been facing displacement and deprivation from resources, which they have been using for centuries. Besides deprivation, wild animals often damage their properties and paddy fields. This leads to resentment among local people and become potential cause of grudge in the form of encroachment, poaching, biodiversity loss, and excessive collection of forest products. As a result, conservation measures may fail to deliver desired outcome. This paper tries to examine the gains and losses for living around KNP and assess the park-people relation. We conduct a case study in some periphery villages of the park and find that people have been suffering from difficulty in rearing livestock and loss caused by wild animal. However, people gain from tourism business. Based on the findings we recommend extension of tourism/allied activities and community welfare measures. The findings may be used to derive policy implication for sustainable management of the park. Kaziranga national park.

  • From UNESCO

In the heart of Assam, this park is one of the last areas in eastern India undisturbed by a human presence. It is inhabited by the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis.

Kaziranga National Park represents one of the last unmodified natural areas in the north-eastern region of India. Covering 42,996 ha, and located in the State of Assam it is the single largest undisturbed and representative area in the Brahmaputra Valley floodplain. The fluctuations of the Brahmaputra River result in spectacular examples of riverine and fluvial processes in this vast area of wet alluvial tall grassland interspersed with numerous broad shallow pools fringed with reeds and patches of deciduous to semi-evergreen woodlands. Kaziranga is regarded as one of the finest wildlife refuges in the world. The park’s contribution in saving the Indian one-horned rhinoceros from the brink of extinction at the turn of the 20th century to harbouring the single largest population of this species is a spectacular conservation achievement. The property also harbours significant populations of other threatened species including tigers, elephants, wild water buffalo and bears as well as aquatic species including the Ganges River dolphin. It is an important area for migratory birds.

Criterion (ix) : River fluctuations by the Brahmaputra river system result in spectacular examples of riverine and fluvial processes. River bank erosion, sedimentation and formation of new lands as well as new water-bodies, plus succession between grasslands and woodlands represents outstanding examples of significant and ongoing, dynamic ecological and biological processes. Wet alluvial grasslands occupy nearly two-thirds of the park area and are maintained by annual flooding and burning. These natural processes create complexes of habitats which are also responsible for a diverse range of predator/prey relationships.

Criterion (x): Kaziranga was inscribed for being the world’s major stronghold of the Indian one-horned rhino, having the single largest population of this species, currently estimated at over 2,000 animals. The property also provides habitat for a number of globally threatened species including tiger, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, gaur, eastern swamp deer, Sambar deer, hog deer, capped langur, hoolock gibbon and sloth bear. The park has recorded one of the highest density of tiger in the country and has been declared a Tiger Reserve since 2007. The park’s location at the junction of the Australasia and Indo-Asian flyway means that the park’s wetlands play a crucial role for the conservation of globally threatened migratory bird species. The Endangered Ganges dolphin is also found in some of the closed oxbow lakes.

The perimeter of Kaziranga on three sides is adjacent to human settlements leading to challenges in protecting the site from illegal incursions of poachers and herdsmen. The introduction of rinderpest and domestic buffaloes has had negative effects on the wild water buffalo population, including hybridisation and genetic swamping of the remaining wild stock. Poaching of rhino has been a serious problem but the overall population levels are steady or rising. Another issue is seasonal flooding which causes many animals to migrate outside the park where they are susceptible to hunting and reprisal for crop damage. The presence of the busy national highway No. 37 along the southern border of Kaziranga has brought increased settlements which disturb wildlife movements in this landscape.  While river migration has also resulted in the loss of some 5,000 ha of forest land from 1925 to 1986, the national park has been enlarged to the north to include part of the River Brahmaputra, although this area has not yet been proposed for inclusion within the World Heritage property. Maintenance of functional connectivity between the park and Karbi Anglong Hills, and the formation of a buffer zone to the south of the park would greatly add to the integrity of the park.

Protection and management requirements

The property receives the highest legal protection and strong legislative framework under the provisions of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and Indian Forest Act, 1927/Assam Forest Regulation 1891. The park has a long history of protection for over a century, reflected in the dramatic recovery of the rhino. The park has been declared as a Tiger Reserve in 2007 and there have been six additions to the park area which has improved management and protection efforts. The property benefits from government support at both national and regional levels as well as involvement of national and international conservation organisations. The site is managed under the administration of the Assam Forest Department, guided by a legally approved Management Plan. The present state of protection and conservation of the property is regarded as one of the best in India. However, key threats include rhino poaching, riverbank erosion, invasive species, tourism pressure, heavy highway traffic, and livestock grazing (particularly in the areas which have been added to the park).  The management needs a long-term strategy for dealing with tourism-related issues, research and monitoring for habitat and wildlife, human-wildlife conflicts and boundary issues relating to the addition areas to the national park. In order to ensure sustained financial flows which are essential for the functioning of the park, the constitution of the Kaziranga Tiger Conservation Foundation has been a landmark measure. The management has also taken steps towards improving infrastructure and staff welfare provisions. Strengthening institutional linkages with other government departments and line agencies for the benefit of the local communities in the fringe villages around the property remains an important management objective for the park authorities.

The Kaziranga National Park (KNP), one of the oldest animal reserves in India, was notified as a reserved forest in 1908. It was chosen to be a World Heritage Site seventy-seven years later in 1985 due to its ‘significant ecological and biological processes’ and its significance as a ‘natural habitat for biodiversity’. It is most popular for its ‘Big Five’, the one horned rhino ((Rhinoceros Unicornis), the tiger, the elephant, the asiatic wild buffalo and the eastern swamp deer.

Open annually from November to April, the sprawling reserve is a very popular tourist destination since 1938. Today the state depends greatly on it for eco-tourism. It encompasses eight notified forests, namely Panbari, Deopahar, Kukurakata, Bagser, Kamakhya, Deosur, Bhumuraguri and the North Karbi Anglong wildlife sanctuary.

The 40 One horned Rhinoceros found in the reserve in 1908 now number at  2,413 within Kaziranga itself. Other habitats protecting the gentle giant are Manas Wildlife reserves and Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Despite the commendable accomplishment of the management in reviving the population of not only the rhino but of the great indian tiger as well (KNP was declared a tiger reserve in 2007), flooding  caused by heavy rainfall remains a major concern. In 2019, large parts of the national park remained submerged for months and the animals fled to unprotected lands and highways, putting themselves and others in greater danger.

500 Words Essay on Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park, a name synonymous with conservation success stories, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the heart of Assam, India. This biodiverse region is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, and an emblem of India’s commitment to wildlife conservation.

Ecological Significance

Kaziranga National Park is situated on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, a geographical feature that contributes significantly to its ecological diversity. The park is a mosaic of grasslands, wetlands, and forests, providing a diverse habitat for a range of species. It is home to the world’s largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, a species once on the brink of extinction. Furthermore, the park is recognized as an Important Bird Area, housing a plethora of avian species, some of which are critically endangered.

The park’s vegetation is predominantly comprised of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical broadleaf forests. This diverse habitat hosts a rich variety of fauna. Apart from the famed one-horned rhinoceros, Kaziranga is home to other large mammals like the Asian elephant, Royal Bengal tiger, and the Asian water buffalo. The park also supports populations of swamp deer, sambar, and hog deer, among others. The park’s birdlife is equally impressive, with species like the endangered Bengal Florican and the near-threatened Black-necked Stork.

Kaziranga’s success as a conservation site is a result of effective management and stringent protection measures. The park has implemented programs like anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and community engagement initiatives. These efforts have led to a significant increase in the populations of several endangered species, most notably the Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

Challenges and Future Perspectives

Despite these successes, Kaziranga faces several challenges. These include human-wildlife conflicts, habitat fragmentation due to infrastructural development, and climate change impacts such as increased flooding. Addressing these issues requires innovative solutions and continued dedication to conservation.

The future of Kaziranga National Park lies in the balance between development and conservation. While tourism and infrastructure growth are important for the local economy, they should not compromise the ecological integrity of the park. To ensure long-term sustainability, it is crucial to involve local communities in conservation efforts and to develop eco-friendly tourism practices.

Kaziranga National Park is a beacon of biodiversity and a symbol of successful conservation. It is a living testament to the resilience of nature and the potential of concerted human effort to preserve it. The park’s future hinges on the delicate balance between human needs and the imperatives of wildlife conservation. As we move forward, Kaziranga serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard our planet’s precious biodiversity for future generations.

Kaziranga and Wetland Bird Census 2019

The Wetland Bird Census 2019 has recorded the following with respect to Kaziranga Park.

  • Kaziranga National Park has recorded 96 species of wetland birds, which is one of the highest for wildlife reserves in India.
  • The survey has observed an increase in not just the total number of birds, but also the number of different species and the families. A notable improvement has been observed compared to the first wetland bird survey in Kaziranga (2018).
  • The bar-headed goose constitutes the most significant share followed by common teal and northern pintail species. The other species with sizable numbers include gadwall, little cormorant, Eurasian wigeon, Asian openbill, northern lapwing, ruddy shelduck and spot-billed pelican.
  • The survey has covered four ranges of the park — Agoratoli, Bagori, Kohora and Burapahar.
  • Agoratoli Range, home to Sohola, the largest of Kaziranga’s 92 perennial wetlands, saw the highest number of birds.

The wetlands constitute the major portion of and also nourish Kaziranga’s ecosystem. Data on wetland birds is vital given that an increase or decrease in the number of birds is indicative of the park’s health.

The History Behind The Establishment Of ‘Kaziranga National Park’

The establishment of Kaziranga National Park was not a random decision but there is a history behind the same. In 1904, there was British rule in India and Lord Curzon was the viceroy at that time. His wife Mary Curzon went to visit that area in the Assam state as it was famous for the rhinoceros. She was very sad to notice that she could spot no rhinoceros in that area. Therefore, she asked her husband to take the necessary steps for the protection of the diminishing number of rhinoceros in that area. This led to the establishment of the Kaziranga reserve forest of an area of 232 square km on 1st June in the year 1905. The Kaziranga reserve forest was further categorized as a ‘Reserve Forest’ in the year 1908 and was its area was extended till the banks of the Brahmaputra River and it became 384 square km.

The Story Of ‘Kaziranga Reserve Forest’ Turning To ‘Kaziranga National Park’

In the year 1916, the Kaziranga reserve forest was named Kaziranga Game Sanctuary and the entry of visitors was allowed in it. It was Kaziranga Game Sanctuary and again named Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary by a forest conservationist P.D. Stracey. This was done by him to reduce the hunting games in this wildlife sanctuary. Finally, in the year 1968 Assam National Park Act, 1968 was passed and the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a Kaziranga national park by the state of Assam. The government of Assam had also passed the Assam (Rhinoceros) bill that would impose a heavy penalty on anybody who is involved in hunting and poaching rhinoceros. This entire earth is not the home only for human beings, but for all other animals, birds and trees. But, man has been greedy enough to take over their natural habitats by clearing forests and insensitive enough to poach and kill them for pleasures and money. As a result of this reckless and inhuman attitude of human beings, many animals and birds have become extinct, many are endangered and acres of forests have fallen. It is a satire and foolishness, on the part of the humans to consider this as a victory or the display of power, by doing such acts. In this way, we are inviting catastrophes by destroying biodiversity. Thus, to save or protect the animals and birds from human interference, the government has declared many forests and other areas as wildlife sanctuary, national parks and reserved forests. By declaring such, the areas have been declared protected, and stringent actions and penalties accompany any hunting, killing, or hurting animals in such areas.
