Meri Mamu movie review: Unimaginable coincidences constitute powerful tragedy
The trailer of Meri Mamu is a combination of unconnected shots with some violence and this may deter you from watching it. However, the movie is a strong presentation of an intriguing plot; and stands a bit higher than the average production in terms of its story as well as cinematic art.
The film is a series of unimaginable coincidences into which the characters fall one after another. The movie is a typical tragedy. Despite some weaknesses acting and technique, the movie creates a cathartic experience.
A model tragedy
Scriptwriter and director Yam Thapa’s craftsmanship reflects well in the way the plot is revealed. Best friends Mamata and Manisha (Kusum Gurung and Aslesha Thakuri), fall in love with the same person, Dr Aakash (Saruk Tamrakar). But Manisha is diagnosed with cancer.
The coincidences that follow complicate the plot: Mamata prevents Manisha from tying the knot with Aayush saying that her cancer will kill her soon. Manisha’s grandfather, meanwhile, tells Aayush about his granddaughter’s ailment; Aayush makes it an issue with Mamata on their wedding anniversary; Mamata decides to force Aayush to marry Manisha after he confesses that she was his first love; Mamata dies in a car crash.
Now, the couple’s son, Prem (played by Ayub Sen) thinks that Manisha killed his mom Mamata. On the other hand, Aakash ties the knot with her, also to take care of Prem, who makes childish efforts to kill her step-mom.
A kind-hearted Manisha, however, makes desperate efforts to establish herself as a caring mother for Prem. The tension between these two constitutes the conflict in the story.
Manisha’s encountering of the situations and finding the ultimate escape in the ultimate tragedy—her own death—make her position as vulnerable as that of the hero of Oedipus Rex, popularly considered the most powerful western tragedy archetype. Mamata’s life also constitutes a similar tragedy—fate leads her to the situations that she wants to avoid and ultimately towards death.
If we are to consider Manisha (and, Mamata and Aakash), not Prem, as the ‘hero’ of the movie, another key requirement of tragedy as defined by Aristotle—that intrinsic flaws of the characters lead to their downfall—is also perfectly applicable in the movie. Manisha is more benevolent and sacrificing than necessary; she believes in idealism more than in reality. Mamata is overthinking and emotional. Aakash is so kind and gentle that he lets himself enter a catastrophe that he could have easily avoided (by rejecting both the women after knowing that they were in competition to get him). Their own weaknesses are responsible for their tragic fall.
The strongest aspect of the movie is its plot. It holds the audience’s attention from beginning to the end. The beginning is interesting as Prem’s statement, “My mom will never return”, makes the audience imagine what really had happened to his mom. The end is powerful; the central message is effectively delivered with an emotional appeal. The concluding song, “Malai maaph garideu, aama”, fits the scene.
Sen’s acting in Prem’s character is so realistic that members of the audience temporarily feel he is a real victim of fate. The stitch on his forehead, his long hair and emotionally charged face give him the look of a disturbed child. The director has trained him quite well; and he holds a promising growth potential in the industry. Tamrakar has also made genuine efforts to establish himself as a gentleman.
A couple of scenes set in Prem’s school establish the movie as a realistic story. In addition, they add fun to the film.
Though the movie is an apparent tragedy, it is a learning journey, a movement from ignorance to knowledge, to the child. The audience now expects him to understand how much love and care Manisha provided to him. Therefore, this is also a story of hope.
The cinematography is excellent. Camerapersons and editors also have done a commendable job as they have pictured different times of a day, different seasons and places—various crossroads of Kathmandu, Tharu village and jungle roads–realistically.
The story is told from Manisha’s perspective, but her narrative is artificial and dull. Thakuri has problems in both forms of speeches, storytelling and dialogue delivery. Her sentences are long. Some of them are quite formal which people do not use in day-to-day conversation. Acting and dialogue delivery of teachers at Prem’s school also look artificial.
Two best friends falling in love with the same person is a clichéd triangular love story. The scriptwriter could have chosen a different pattern to deliver his message in the movie.
The film connects positive human qualities with some baseless superstitions. For example, Prem, trained by Mamata, believes that a cat crossing the way is a bad omen to people seeing it. When Manisha and Prem are on their way to Devghat, a cat crosses the road in front of them. The writer and the director make Manisha die on the same day, proving the false belief’s power. This could have been avoided as well.
Of two songs used in the play, the first song does not contribute anything to the movie in essence. So is the role of a neighbourhood woman—she is cynical and believes in conspiracy theories. Members of the audience laugh at her foolish dialogues though.
Why people love tragedies though they want to avoid them in real life is a philosophical question. Literary theorists believe that such works give the audience a chance for catharsis, the process through which they express their emotions in the form of sympathy to fictional characters; and it is healthy to their emotional well-being.
Meri Mamu is also a tragic family drama with a cathartic potential. You won’t regret watching it.

Mamu (and a mother too) 2018 ★★★★.
Watched Aug 28 , 2020
josh’s review published on Letterboxd:
The fetishization of BL or 'boys love' is a rising trend in the Philippines. However, the challenge of maximizing BL context into three-dimensional narratives is constant. BL-themed Asian series are often utopian and unrealistic, while world cinema's queer representation is frequently told in tragic narratives where community struggles are often used for comedic relief. Rod Singh's Mamu; And a Mother Too found that perfect spot in between where it balanced two different storytelling approaches in a black comedy genre that does not poke fun at its characters' tragedy, but sympathizes in a humane-structured story.
The warmth and authenticity of its screenplay are commendable, with its characters' self-actualization as its biggest strength. While its rough-around-the-edges narrative and occasionally incoherent storyline tend to dilute its merit, its overall intimacy really makes up for it. The film actively involves the audience in being part of the characters' journey and development, as if the director is building a series of culminating activities that you can be a part of. From hanging out in the cemetery to drooling at Mamu's embutido, the movie weaves you in and makes you a part of the story, leaving you with underlying realizations that go beyond the film's surface.
Mamu; and A Mother Too stands out from other queer films due to its notable absence of gender bias. The film does not antagonize men, nor does it question their attraction to trans (Mamu) and gay people (Bona). It empowers transwomen with its non-reliance on gender roles; instead, they are simply defined as people where kindness and good-heartedness are the measure of their humanity.
I also love Bona's arc in this film. EJ Jallorina and Markus Patterson should have the standalone films that they deserve. I know I'm not the only one getting tired of masc for masc bl tandems. We need more of this.

Meri Nimmo review: An uncomplicated, charming story about childhood, first love and heartbreak
Meri Nimmo (originally titled Nimmo), is the uncomplicated and sweet story of a nine-year-old boy and his first love, which is also his first experience with heartbreak.
Meri Nimmo (originally titled Nimmo ), is the uncomplicated and sweet story of a nine-year-old boy and his first love, which is also his first experience with heartbreak. Hemu might disagree about the uncomplicated part, because unrequited love can be complicated even at age nine.
Hemu is a confident and slightly precocious boy, the only son of a single parent. His mother is glad for the close-knit community in their hamlet and the support offered by a young neighbour, Nimmo. Hemu has a huge crush on Nimmo, who is at least twice his age. So when the village starts buzzing with news of Nimmo’s upcoming engagement, Hemu, egged on by his best friend, decides he must propose to her first.
This leads to some cute scenes capturing a child’s naive understanding of adult relationships and rituals such as marriage and related paraphernalia.
Director Rahul Shankalya shoots the film almost in two planes – the view as seen from the eyes of a nine year old, and the world according to the adults who don’t take children seriously nor do share any real information with them. Hemu is as much as errand boy for his mother as he is for Nimmo. And Nimmo sees herself as nothing more than his big sister as he helps him with everyday chores.
Yet Hemu and his friends are resourceful kids. They fix cycles, draw complex diagrams for school homework, can ride mopeds and rig up a makeshift projector using a water-filled light bulb and light refraction to create a home-grown picture experience (in this case, the main attraction is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge ).
The jaunty, French-cinema style background music by Krishna underlines a lightness of being. Anjali Patil’s beaming smile and open affection for Hemu seem to come naturally to the actress, which makes Hemu’s infatuation all the more endearing. Karan Dave is a delight as the oddly authoritative and independent child who’s in a hurry to grow up.
Peeyush Shrivastava’s story (screenplay and dialogues) is stretched to one hour 30 minutes, especially as its’s clear how the film will end. It’s obvious that Hemu will get a reality check and life will go on. But life is not always about heightened drama and in that sense Shankalya mostly presents authentic small town life populated by myriad characters (though a couple of scenes are a bit stagy), at the core holding on to an innocent world where children experience growing pains and adults go through their own rites of passage.
Meri Nimmo is now streaming on Eros Now.

Meri Maa is like one of those 70s melodramatic films when the heroine would lose her child in a mela and then weep...
Monday to Sunday,9.00 pm,Life OK
Cast: Neena Kulkarni,Parikshit Sahni,Sayantani Ghosh,Avneet Kaur
Meri Maa is like one of those 70s melodramatic films when the heroine would lose her child in a mela and then weep copiously for the rest of the film, singing her favourite lullaby even as the child would suffer from the separation pangs. Not to forget the barbs, the mother would have to hear from her family and others for being an irresponsible parent.
In this show,Pratibha has lost her first born,a daughter,Pari in a Ganpati mela. Her mother-in-law holds her responsible while the men in the family, her husband, her father-in-law and brothers-in-law think the incident should be forgotten as an accident and Pratibha should move on. Pratibha wallows in self- pity, something that irks her mother-in-law who has now taken her grandson (Pratibhas second born) under her wings. She doesnt allow Pratibha to even touch the child or take him anywhere, lest she forgets him too!
Meanwhile,Pari is now Jhilmil,a petty thief,a little Miss Robin Hood. Her new mother has not told her the truth of her birth while the girl keeps getting flashes of her past.
The show thrives on melodrama. Pratibha cries endlessly and there are many times when you want to shake her up and get her out of her teary daze. To make the Maharashtrian setting authentic, the characters address each other as Vahini,Aaji or Aajoba (which they irritatingly pronounce as Aajoeba),the women wear typically Maharashtrian saris with gajras in their hair all the time (we wonder how many Maharashtrian women wear mogra gajras every day?). The men are reduced to puppets while the women scream and screech endlessly.
On the upside is Avneet Kaur as Jhilmil. She is the star of the show. Though we take serious offence at her and her pack of little thieves calling the cops mamu and pandu, and the stereotypical portrayal of the men in uniform (pot bellied, cracking a joke or two,you get the drift).
About the performances,Neena Kulkarni is first rate as the bitter-mouthed mother-in-law. She could be the other reason for watching the show. Sayantani Ghosh as the crybaby Pratibha is not bad either.
Finally,Meri Maa is for those who like their prime-time heroines as a bechari, who lets everyone happily walk all over her. Not our cuppa.
Verdict: Watch it if you like little children tugging at your heart strings with emotional lines and lots of crying.

#MajaMaOnPrime is kinda a lost opportunity!! Such a great idea and Big big big kudos to Madhuri for playing this character. But somehow the movie, the exaggerated Accents, almost the first hour doesn't work. But happy to see Madhuri doing more work. — Aman (@cadence99) October 7, 2022

#MajaMa is such a delightful heartwarming movie! #MadhuriDixit is in top form as Pallavi Patel, there is not one false note in her performance as someone who is suffocated hiding her truth. She is ably supported by an exceptional supporting cast! #MajaMaOnPrime #majamareview pic.twitter.com/DxUFnhH8SR — 𝙿𝚘𝙼 🌶️ (@Instajustice13) October 5, 2022
@MadhuriDixit acted through her eyes. We can feel her helplessness, her unreasonable emotion of being guilty over something which is absolutely natural. There's a sadness in her eyes throughout. Without any monologue or heavy dialogues, she conveyed the most difficult emotions👏 — raison d'être (@LetttIttGo) October 6, 2022

It's really a complete breath of fresh air, on the sole reason that the biggest plight of its gay characters concerns either earning money or being torn by their admirers. 'Mamu' feels like it was living in a near-perfect world wherein acceptance wasn't much of a problem, that they are strongly capable of doing the things other people can do.
Meri Nimmo (originally titled Nimmo), is the uncomplicated and sweet story of a nine-year-old boy and his first love, which is also his first experience with heartbreak.Hemu might disagree about the uncomplicated part, because unrequited love can be complicated even at age nine. Hemu is a confident and slightly precocious boy, the only son of a single parent.

Cast: Neena Kulkarni,Parikshit Sahni,Sayantani Ghosh,Avneet Kaur. Meri Maa is like one of those 70s melodramatic films when the heroine would lose her child in a mela and then weep copiously for the rest of the film, singing her favourite lullaby even as the child would suffer from the separation pangs.
