Environment refers to the physical, biological and ecological systems and the elements around us. All these elements are present on the earth without human intervention. An environment is made up of several aspects. These include:

• Physical Components: This includes landforms (Mountains, valleys, plains), water bodies (oceans, rivers, ponds, lakes), the atmosphere of the air and finally geological features (rocks, soils and minerals). 
• Biological Components: All living organisms which live in the natural environment fall under this category. It includes microorganisms, plants and animals. 
• Ecosystems:  An ecosystem is a geographical area comprising plants, animals, and other organisms, weather and landscape, which together form a bubble of life. 
• Biodiversity: It comprises all the different types of living organisms one will find in one area. All types of organisms such as fungi, bacteria, plants and animals form biodiversity.

To conclude, we must all remember that saving the environment is not a choice but a necessity. It will require global cooperation as well as individual commitment. Our environment is a very precious thing which provides us with clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, and a diverse range of ecosystems that support countless species, including humans. However, our actions over the years have only shown that we aren’t grateful. This has led to environmental degradation and climate change has reached a threatening level. Therefore, we must start with immediate actions to save our environment. 

One of the most pressing issues today is climate change. It is largely driven by the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and several industrial activities. Due to all these activities, there have been dire consequences which can be quite evident through extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems.

To fight this climate change problem, we will have to work to get cleaner, renewable energy sources. We must also protect and restore our forests as they act as carbon sinks and absorb harmful greenhouse gases. 

Common issues like pollution are creating a huge problem for us as it is poisoning our air, soil and water. To work on this, we must reduce our reliance on single-use plastics and adopt an eco-friendly alternative. On the other hand, industrial emissions and vehicle pollution can be controlled by putting strict actions and electric vehicles can be promoted. For wastewater, it can be treated through responsible waste disposal to prevent contamination of our water bodies. 

Water scarcity is another growing concern. We must ensure that water is used wisely. Additionally, reducing water pollution from industrial and agricultural runoff is essential for the health of our ecosystems and aquatic life.

Biodiversity loss is another critical issue. Deforestation, habitat destruction, and overexploitation of resources are driving many species to extinction. Conservation efforts, protected areas, and sustainable practices in agriculture and fisheries are vital to preserving our planet.

In conclusion, we must address climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity through a combination of government policies, technological advancements, and individual actions. Our planet’s health is intricately linked to our own.

Our environment must be safeguarded and conserved. Natural energy conservation is critical since it maintains us. There are several strategies to protect our environment, the first of which is to reduce pollution levels. Population expansion and 'consumerism' on the part of the wealthy sectors of society are the primary causes of this rapid depletion of all natural resources. These dangerous gases significantly impact human health, producing chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, and other respiratory disorders. Furthermore, by depleting the ozone layer and exposing humans to ultraviolet radiation, air pollution hastens 'global warming' and weakens the immune system.

Water Pollution | Water pollution is caused by the suspension of water-soluble inorganic compounds from factories, releasing untreated human and animal wastes into freshwater, and the draining fertilisers and pesticides during river irrigation. This renders the water unsafe for drinking, causing gastrointestinal disorders and cancer.

Soil Pollution | Using chemical fertilisers and insecticides in soil kills harmful and good pests, resulting in less nutritious crops. Furthermore, long-term exposure to chemical-infected crops caused by soil contamination causes health problems. Soil erosion induced by excessive deforestation and building increases the frequency of floods, resulting in catastrophic damage to human life.

Noise Pollution | Excessive noise from factories and cars can cause physical damage to the ear, leading to temporary or permanent hearing loss. Noise pollution harms Homo sapiens' mental, emotional, and psychological health, generating stress, anxiety, and irritation, and so impairing work performance.

Methods For Environmental Protection

Looking back through history, we can see that our forefathers were more concerned with environmental preservation than we are today. This may be seen in Sunderlal Bahuguna's contributions to the Chipko Movement, which protected forest resources. Similarly, Medha Patkar effectively rescued the tribal people's habitat, which the construction of dams on the Narmada River had severely harmed. Likewise, as today's young, we may take small measures to conserve our natural environment:

To avoid the overuse of non-renewable resources, we should promote and apply the principle of reducing, i.e. reduce, recycle, and reuse. Metal scrap, for example, can be utilised to create new metal items.

This causes an increase in the amount and levels of hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides, carbon monoxide, chloro-fluoro-carbons, etc. All of these are very harmful and hazardous gases that affect the human health negatively and can cause lung cancer, chronic bronchitis and a lot of other countless respiratory diseases. The ozone layer is also depleting at an alarming rate and this makes us very vulnerable and prone to the dangerous harm of ultraviolet rays. Air pollution harms the environment in numerous ways like global warming and also weakens and lowers the immune system.

There are some methods that can be employed to save the environment. Even way back in history, people have always been concerned about the environment and saving it.

i. The concept of 3Rs (recycle, reduce and reuse) should be applied and promoted so that we can prevent the highly excessive use of resources that are non-renewable. For example, new metal products can be made from scrap metal.

ii. Bulbs and tube lights that are energy efficient should be used to save energy.

iii. The use of wood and paper products should be reduced and the use of e-paper and e-book should be encouraged.

iv. The use of fossil fuels can be reduced by using public transport, walking, cycling or car-pooling.

v. Instead of using plastic bags, jute/cloth bags can be used.

vi. Solar panels and rechargeable batteries can be used as alternative sources of energy.

vii. Compost bins can be set up to produce manure instead of using fertilisers.

Even though there are various established laws and schemes constituted by governments in order to save the environment, it is everyone’s duty and responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for present and future generations.

There is a popular saying by Lester Brown that reads “We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers-we have borrowed it from our children.” So, every individual on earth must contribute his quota towards the conservation of the environment, not just waiting on the government to do everything.

To meet the current needs of our increasing population level, we are consuming our natural resources indiscriminately without thinking. We are not worrying about our future generation also. In this way, the biggest concern in today’s time is that we need to take strict steps for the protection of our renewable and non-renewable resources and for the protection of our earth.

• Air pollution: Due to the construction of transport system and the use of petrol and diesel on a large scale, the level of pollution has increased very rapidly, due to which the amount of harmful particles present in many types of unwanted and gaseous air has also increased significantly. Due to this increased amount of carbon monoxide, chloro-fluorocarbons, sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons and lead, our ozone layer, which protects us from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, is beginning to end. Due to which a significant increase in temperature has been registered, which is commonly known as global warming.
• Water Pollution: Human and animal waste, water-soluble non-organic chemicals such as mercury and lead from industries and effluents of organic chemicals such as detergents and oils that mix into freshwater ponds and rivers contaminate the water. and this water becomes unfit for us to drink. Due to these reasons, aquatic life has also been affected in a very bad way, along with decrease in crop yield and drinking water is no longer safe for humans and animals.
• Land Pollution : Spraying of fertilizers and pesticides such as DDT in large quantities and use of water which has high salt content to increase the yield of crops, such measures make the land useless. Such pollution is known as land pollution and due to this there has also been an increase in soil erosion, for which reasons like construction and deforestation etc. are mainly responsible.
• Noise Pollution : Noise from vehicles, factories and crackers bursting during Diwali in India are mainly responsible for noise pollution. It seriously harms the animals because they are not able to adapt themselves to it, due to which their hearing becomes impaired.

Environmental protection is not only the work of the government, for this our own contribution as a person is also very important. Knowingly or unknowingly, we contribute to pollution every day. Therefore, it is our duty as a consumer to make use of the gifts provided by nature, to promote water conservation and participate in the reuse and recycle of goods, stop wastage of resources like electricity and water etc. By all these small measures, we can bring about a very effective change in the condition of our planet.

• Air Pollution : The increasing use of petrol and diesel for transport and the increasing combustion of fossil fuels for energy production by industries has led to the biggest increase in air pollution. Due to which the level of sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons, chloro-fluorocarbons and carbon monoxide etc. has also increased. These harmful gases have a very bad effect on human health, causing chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and many other respiratory diseases. Due to this the ozone layer is also getting depleted, due to which humans are no longer protected from ultraviolet rays as much as before. Along with this, there has also been an increase in air pollution and global warming, due to which the human immune system has weakened.
• Water Pollution: The problem of water pollution arises due to mixing of soluble inorganic chemicals in water from industries and human and animal wastes in fresh water and mixing of fertilizers and pesticides in water during irrigation. It not only spoils the quality of drinking water, but also gives rise to cancer and many diseases related to stomach and intestine. Apart from this, it also has a negative effect on aquatic life, water pollution also does not allow fish to be edible.
• Soil Pollution : Due to the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, not only bad insects present in the soil but also good insects die. Due to which we get less nutritious crops. Apart from this, problems like mutation, cancer etc. arise due to the consumption of crops infected with chemicals by land pollution. The frequency of floods has also increased due to rapid deforestation and construction. As a result, human life is being destroyed on a large scale.
• Noise Pollution: Due to excessive noise generated by factories and vehicles, human hearing is being affected, resulting in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Noise pollution has a negative impact on human mental, emotional and mental health, causing problems like stress, anxiety and irritability, etc., which adversely affect our work performance.

• We should promote the concept of 3R, under which tasks like reduce, recycle, reuse are included. In which we can take measures by reducing the excessive use of non-renewable energy sources, such as using iron waste to make iron.
• Using products like energy saving tube lights and bulbs etc.
• Use less paper and wood Use e-books and e-papers as much as possible.
• Minimizing the use of fossil fuels Using measures such as walking, car pools or public transportation to get around.
• Use jute or cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
• Using reusable batteries and solar panels.
• Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and setting up compost bins for making manure from cow dung.

But still it is our duty personally that every person should contribute towards environmental protection and secure the future of our coming generations, because at present it is being used the most by us.
