Animals and birds are the friends of mankind. We get milk from animals like cows , buffalo, goats,s, and sheep. Dogs guard our fields and our houses. Pets like parrots, pigeons, rabbits, and cats give us joy and happiness. We like to keep pets as per one’s needs and likings. All my friends have some of the other pets.

I also have a pet cat . She is a cute little bundle of white and black color. Her eyes are blue and shiny. We all call her Rani. She comes running to me whenever I call her. Rani is purely vegetarian. Every day I feed her bread, milk, and biscuits. I. bathe her regularly with soap and lots of water.

She is very obedient. I take her to the garden every evening. I play with her. We run, we jump. She expresses her happiness by shaking her tail and by making various sounds. Rani wanders freely inside the house. But she never spoils the eatables. She becomes conscious whenever she rings, then she runs towards the main door to welcome us.

Sometimes she catches a mouse and then runs out of the house. Usually, the dog is an enemy of a cat. But Rani is so brave that she threatens the dogs. Cats are most popular pets in the world. Cats have been nearly 10000 years as a pet animal. Cats help us with more than 1000 species of animals, including snakes, rats and other animals. It is very easy to train the cats because they are quick learners. The cat sounds like meow.

According to one survey in America 69 million cats are there as pets. Cats take second place as pets where dogs have the first place. The origin of the cats is African wild cat.

Few people kept cats to help them to find the mouse in their farms. Where others kept them as friendly and good companions. The Egyptians kept cats as their main pet animal. They believe cats as gods.

The English word ‘cat’ is a Latin word Catus. A group of cats is referred to as cloud or glitter, a male cat called tom or comet, a monotonous woman called the queen. We call small cats as kittens.

Different breeds having different types of hair, like long hair, short hair, and hairless breeds. Nowadays special foods are available for cats in all developed countries. Right food will help to cats live longer.

Cats have excellent night vision and can only see the one-sixth level of human need for human vision. Cats have excellent hearing and can detect the most extensive frequencies. Can hear more-pitched sounds than dogs or humans.

Cats have relatively few taste buds compared to humans (470 or more than 9,000 in human language). Indigenous and wild cats share genetic mutations to contain sugar molecules, including their sweet taste buds, which do not have a sweet taste. Instead, their taste buds react to amino acids, bitter taste, and acids.

The average lifespan of pets has grown in recent years. In the 1980s, it was seven years, rising 9.4 years in 1995, and in 12-15 years in 2014.

Several kinds of health problems, including parasites, bruises, chronic disease, can affect cats. Many diseases are available for vaccines, and indigenous cats regularly provide treatments to eliminate parasites such as worms.

The pet cats are similar to other members of Felice, usually with 4 and 5 kg weight. Some species occasionally more than 11 kg. On the opposite, very small cats, less than 2 kg, have been reported. The largest cat to the world record 21 kg. The officially recorded smallest cat is weighed 1 kg.

Due to the close similarity between drama and hunting, cats like to play with animals such as small fur-dolls, but lose interest in the toy they have played quickly (they get used to). Toys are more common when cats are hungry.

Cats can bite humans when induced, during play or aggression. The cat bite is different from other pets. This is because cat teeth are sharp and deeper.

Cats can transmit viruses, bacteria, fungus, protozoa, arthropods or mites to humans. In some cases, the cat does not show any symptoms for this disease, although the same disease is clearly visible in man.

The risk of a person being infected depends on the age of the person and the immune system. Most of the infections occurring are salmonella, cat scratch disease, and toxoplasmosis.

I have a cat as my pet animal and her name is 'Mani'. She a very beautiful cat. Everyone in our house loves her and pampers her. Because of Mani, not a single mouse enters our home, and If a mouse enters in then Mani doesn't spare him.

My cat Mani can jump very high very easily and see can walk in high places without any fear. And she always walks in pride. These similar qualities are seen in Tigers so cats are said to be ancestors of them.

I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

A Special Presence

Almost 15 years ago, I was in bad shape. I was divorced, broke, drinking too much, and living in a dated walk-up next to a noisy bar. (It was only minutes from my young daughter, it had a nice view of the bay here in Newport, and I could afford it.) The local veterinary hospital was a few doors down; they always kept one or two adoptable animals in the window. One day, a gorgeous black cat, with a little white tuxedo patch and big gold-green eyes, showed up in a small cage. I stared at her for a while. She stared back patiently.

I wasn’t taking very good care of myself at that moment, so I decided I couldn’t take care of a cat. I walked on. For weeks, the cat sat there. For weeks, we stared at each other. One day, as I was deep in my cups, I took a walk with a friend and co-worker who also happened to be my next-door neighbor. “You look at that damn cat every day,” he said. “Just go in and get it.”

The cat was called “RC” and she was a stray, but her preexisting spaying and good health showed that she’d once had a home. Now she was the queen of the animal clinic: Because of her gentle temperament, the staff would let her out of the cage after hours, and she would sit on their desks while they did their paperwork.

I picked her up. She looked at me as if to say: Yeah, I recognize you. You’re the doofus who stared at me for weeks. I signed the papers and took her home. She was fluffy and black-haired, so I decided I would name her after Carla Tortelli from the show Cheers ; thus, she became Carla T. Nichols. She explored the apartment quietly for a day or two, and then, one afternoon, I found her on my bed, stretched out on her back, paws up, purring. Yep , she was saying. This will do.

I was still deeply depressed, but every night, Carla would come and flake out over my keyboard as I struggled to work. That’s enough of that , she seemed to say. And then we would go into the living room, where I would sit in a chair and Carla would sit on the armrest. (We’ve now both seen almost every episode of Law & Order .) Slowly, she added routine to my life, but mostly, we had lots of hours of doing nothing—the quiet time that can feel sort of desolate if you’re alone, but like healing if you have the right company.

Soon, I started to see daylight. I met a woman named Lynn. I laid off the booze. I got help of various kinds.

Lynn started to come to the apartment more often, but Carla gave her a full examination before bestowing approval: That cat was not going to let some newcomer waltz in and wreck the careful feline therapy she’d been providing. Finally, Carla climbed on the pillows one morning and curled up around Lynn’s head. Okay , she was saying. Lynn can stay.

My grade-schooler daughter was the other regular visitor, and Carla immediately decided that she was hers as well as mine. This was a cat who clearly had experience with children, and showed a kind of shepherding instinct whenever kids were around. She’d stay with them and circle them; she’d let them pull her tail and clumsily pat her head and other indignities most cats won’t tolerate. She loved kids, and she especially seemed to love mine.

Lynn and I soon realized that this was no ordinary cat. I’ve had smart cats, and some who were lovable but not very bright. Carla was not a prodigy, but she had a unique presence that even strangers on social media could see when I posted clips or pictures. I can attribute this only to an emotional intelligence, the bond that some animals have with people that lets them suss out who’s who and how we might be feeling. If you were sad, or sick, she was there. If the human vibes were happy, you could hear her purr from a room away.

Eventually, Lynn and I bloomed from friendship into love. Slowly, I put my life back in order, and Carla clearly thought that me getting on my feet was mostly her doing. It wasn’t that simple, but I will say this: A man blessed with a concerned doctor, a dedicated counselor, a wise priest, a few good friends, and a great love in his life can overcome much. But a man with all of those and a marvelous cat can really cover a lot of distance.

I finally bought a house, and Lynn and I married. Just as she had done with the apartment, Carla inspected the new digs and said: I approve. Instantly, it was her house.

For more than a decade, it was the three of us, and Carla became Lynn’s friend even more than mine. Much like a dog, Carla would trot around with Lynn during the day, and come if called. She would even wag her tail. (She would find this canine comparison insulting, of course.) When I would finally get up—I’m a night owl—Lynn would bring over a cappuccino and Carla would invariably accompany her, waiting for me to scoop up some foam on my finger for her to lick. Then my wife and her pal would go back to their day.

Carla had a remarkable sense of time and schedule. When I would teach in Boston, she’d sit in the window at the time she knew I’d return. She would show up at the same time every night to escort Lynn to bed; later, and always at almost the exact same time, she would meow at me until I carried her around on my shoulder while locking up the house. (Unlike some cats, she liked hugs. She would have sat on my shoulder all day if I’d let her.)

And although she had a bowl of food available all day, we shared our human dinner with her in a daily ritual. Carla would rouse from her afternoon nap and find us almost at the moment the clock struck five, with a look that asked: What are we having today? Is it steak? I like steak. Or chicken? Chicken’s good too.

Then came the day she literally saved my life—and Lynn’s.

My house was built in 1956, back before the local authorities in my small town enforced bothersome things such as building codes and safety regulations. Some genius had decided to balance the fireplace with wooden shims (which were hidden behind bricks). Over the decades, they burned away and dropped hot embers on floor beams.

The day after Christmas, six years ago, Carla jumped on our heads in bed. Wake up wake up wake up.

We figured she was just being testy about breakfast. Lynn headed downstairs—but, strangely, Carla stayed in the bedroom. A moment later, Lynn was back: “I smell smoke.” I grumbled and went two floors down to the basement, where I was startled to find a small lick of flame shooting from a ceiling panel. I grabbed our kitchen extinguisher and sprayed it; smoke gushed from the ceiling. I was minutes from being dead. I ran up to the kitchen just as the smoke alarms finally tripped on. We called 911.

Lynn dashed back upstairs looking for Carla, and there she was, calmly sitting on the bed. I told you to wake up. I wasn’t kidding. They stayed safe in the car while I ran around in the winter cold, my panic growing as I watched the fire department battle a fire that destroyed almost a quarter of my home.

The fire marshal later told us that if Carla hadn’t bought us that extra time, the fire—which hadn’t immediately tripped the smoke alarms, because it was caught between the floor and ceiling—would have broken through and engulfed the house (and us). He told us that cats are usually casualties of house fires because they hide out of fear and can’t be found in time. Carla, however, alerted us and then waited for us to come get her.

While the house was being repaired, we all spent a month in a hotel. Carla would tell you that it was the best time of her life: her people, a bed, food, and a litter box—all in the same two rooms? Kitty nirvana.

My daughter grew up, and Carla started sleeping in her room, as some cats will do once the kids they love go away. Grandchildren arrived; Carla adopted them. Our schedules changed as we all got older, and Carla began checking on me in the mornings if I wasn’t awake by a certain time. She also developed some separation anxiety: If one of us left the house or traveled, Carla would stick to the other one like a furry hunk of superglue. I don’t like this. I want to be with you both. I liked that hotel thing; can we do that again?

And then came the warning signs. Carla started to lose a lot of weight. She developed thyroid and kidney issues. The light began to go out of her eyes. The night before I took her back to the same small office where I’d found her, I made a fire—she’d become a big fan of those as her arthritis worsened—and she climbed in my lap. She purred and bumped her head into my face, and then she went and sat quietly nearby as we watched television, just like the old days. It felt like a goodbye. I think she knew.

The next day, our vet confirmed that there was little more we could do for Carla without tormenting her. I held her on my shoulder one last time as they gave her the first shot. Lynn and I stroked her head and whispered to her during the second shot, and our tears soaked her fur. And then she was gone.

We haven’t yet gotten used to a house without Carla in it. Like many who’ve lost a pet, we both still think we see her out of the corner of our eye. I still automatically look into my daughter’s room to see if she’s there. We still expect her at dinner, and Lynn still waits for her to come and say: Time for bed, let’s go. Eventually, we’ll welcome new animals into our home, and I’m sure we will love them. But Carla was a little friend unlike any I’d ever had—and I doubt I will ever owe another cat the debt that I owe her.

Tips for strengthening your bond with your cat | Pet Project

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Want to strengthen the bond you have with your cat? In this week's Pet Project, Pennsylvania SPCA animal advocate Carol Erickson says you'll want to work on positive associations.

The goal is to create non-threatening associations for your cat with various things, like sights, sounds and experiences.

But according to Erickson, it's easier to teach these positive associations when you have a properly socialized cat .

Examples of these positive interactions include treat time and lawn time, teaching cats new tricks and even teaching them their names.

However, it's important to remember to respect a cat's boundaries and pay attention to their body language to determine when and how they want affection.

When cats don't want affection, they'll let you know, sometimes with the swish of a tail or they might even strike you with a claw or tooth.

Erickson also explained that studies have shown a cat owner's gender has a much more significant impact on the cat-human bond than the gender of the cat. Female owners tend to be more active toward their cats, they'll speak to the cat and approach it more often than men do, which seems to help with their bond.

In the end, patience, compassion and a nurturing environment can help owners make memories with any cat.

Love Petting Your Cat? There's A 'Red Zone' You Need To Avoid.

Is there anything better than a cat making biscuits on our bellies? Or kitties rubbing their fuzzy little chins against our shins? Or watching them zoom around the living room?

No. No there is not (and this is not up for debate).

Because these floofy goofballs bring us so much joy, we want to return the favor. But how do we know if we’re really making them happy? And when we’re loving on our cats, what should and shouldn’t we do?

That’s what we — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, hosts of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast — asked Mikel Delgado, Ph.D. , a cat behaviorist and scientist, when we recently chatted with her to learn the secrets of understanding our furry friends.

It turns out we might be petting our cats all wrong.

“What I always like to start with when I’m talking about petting is an understanding of humans and what we like because this is where the conflict comes up,” Delgado said. “We are primates. We like to hug. We like to touch. And I don’t know if you’re familiar with this concept of the homunculus, but it’s a diagram of the physical human body in relationship to how the brain is organized and how much space is dedicated in our brain to different senses.”

The homunculus depicts a person with huge lips and gigantic hands , because these are two of the most sensitive parts of our bodies.

“Basically, what it means is we like to touch things — we like to touch them with our mouth, and we like to touch them with our lips,” she said. “We want to kiss our cats, we want to pet our cats, we want to hold them close. That’s the human experience — we want to touch a lot.”

Cats, on the other hand, are a “high-frequency, low-intensity species” when it comes to contact.

“They like lots of really short interactions — like not intense,” Delgado noted. “A lot of humans are, like, ‘I want to pet you, kitty, and I want to pet you for a long time,’ and then we get bitten. ‘Overstimulation’ is what we call it, or ‘petting aggression,’ when a cat has had too much petting — and too much is based on the individual preference [of the cat].”

A twitching tail, cranky meow or ears that are moving around a lot are all signals that a cat is annoyed by our touch.

“They might even bite or scratch people to say, like, ‘I’m done,’ and so at that point the petting is no longer pleasurable and has become irritating,” Delgado said.

The “ Play With Your Cat ” author added that some cats dislike the amount of petting they’re receiving, others dislike the part of the body we’re touching and some dislike both.

“I know for my cats, like, I could pet their cheeks and chin and forehead for hours, but you know, we call below the neck ‘the yellow zone,’” she said. “It’s like, now you’re in the danger area. And then there’s some areas that are ‘red zone.’”

Two studies have confirmed Delgado’s anecdotal findings and offered some guidance on how we can pet our cats in a way that’s more pleasurable for them.

“Both of the studies converged on similar conclusions, which is that for most cats, the neck up is a good place to pet cats,” she said. “Most cats respond positively to it. The general body is iffy — it really depends on the cat.”

The areas of the body that were found to be the most sensitive and most likely to generate a negative reaction from a cat — the so-called red zone — include the belly and the base of the tail, and for many cats, the paws.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that all cats will dislike being touched in these places.

“We’re using science to make a conclusion, but there’s always individual differences,” Delgado said. “I will say I’ve had cats who love belly rubs. So I don’t want to say every cat hates belly rubs. ... That’s not what the science says. The science says that most cats do not enjoy belly rubs.”

If you’re meeting a cat for the first time, Delgado suggested offering the cat your hand, letting them sniff and rub against your fingers and then providing gentle pets to the cheeks, chin and forehead.

“The neck up is pretty safe — that’s a good place to start,” she said. “Anything other than that, you’re venturing into the danger zone.”

Ultimately, none of this means we need to stop heaping love on our cats. It just might mean petting them for a shorter amount of time, avoiding certain areas on their bodies or just paying more attention to context clues that might message they’re just not feeling us. And, of course, your cat might love being pet in the red zone more than anywhere else and, if that’s the case, go for it!

Routine physical examinations are an integral part of preventative pet care. It is at these appointments that vaccinations are typically administered to our companion animals. But what does it mean if your cat begins throwing up after having vaccinations?

Unfortunately, vomiting following vaccination administration could be a sign of a serious vaccine reaction. Continue reading below to learn about possible causes of vomiting following vaccine administration.

The 3 Reasons Your Cat Is Throwing Up After Having Vaccines
1. Vaccine Reactions

A common reason a cat exhibits vomiting following vaccination is due to an allergic reaction. Although vaccinations are made as safe as possible, individual sensitivities may exist. Some minor vaccine reactions may result in local discomfort or swelling, whereas more significant vaccine reactions can cause vomiting and signs of shock.

Typically, vomiting secondary to a vaccine reaction occurs quickly, usually within 30 minutes of the vaccine administration, although some responses may be delayed. If vomiting occurs in your recently vaccinated cat, your veterinarian should be contacted. If a vaccine reaction is suspected, interventions may be necessary, which could include the use of antihistamines, steroids, or even epinephrine.

Respiratory distress

Although it doesn’t always occur, cats can vomit as a result of anxiety or stress. It is possible that your companion is experiencing anxiety secondary to the events of the day. Prior to future appointments, your veterinarian may recommend administering medication to help reduce your companion’s anxiety and fear. In cats, gabapentin is often used for this purpose. Taking steps to minimize appointment-related anxiety can be beneficial, including the use of pheromones and desensitization.

3. Motion Sickness

For most cats, a vet visit means a short road trip. Whereas some animals may handle this very well, other cats may be very sensitive to motion sickness. It is helpful to keep your pet in a carrier they are accustomed to and keep the car quiet and cool. If vomiting is due to motion sickness, your vet may recommend withholding food prior to the appointment, as well as recommend administering a medication like Cerenia®, an anti-nausea medication used for motion sickness.

Differentiating the Cause of Vomiting

Determining the cause of vomiting may be difficult. It will be important to closely observe your companion for any other signs of illness and to note time frames in which vomiting has occurred. Be sure to seek veterinary care if any other signs of anaphylaxis are present, or if your cat vomits repeatedly. If you are unsure how to proceed with your pet, reach out to your local veterinarian or emergency veterinarian for guidance.

Pre-Treating Vaccine Reactions

In the future, prior to any other vaccinations, it will be important to mention to your veterinarian any previous vaccine reactions or suspected vaccine reactions that your pet has experienced. Animals who have had vaccine reactions previously may be pre-treated with medications to minimize the chance of a reaction occurring again and may be encouraged to allow their pet to stay at the veterinary office all day for observation.

Vomiting following vaccination should always be taken seriously. It will be critical to closely observe your feline companion for signs of their condition worsening, and be ready to seek veterinary care if needed. Although stress and motion sickness can both lead to vomiting, the possibility of a vaccine reaction is much more concerning. Veterinary care should be immediately sought out if there is a concern of possible anaphylaxis.

Curiosity trapped the cat.

TikTok user Mariah Vanessa, AKA @mv.esco, has shared the harrowing story of her wayward kitty who found itself trapped inside a wall after a repair patched up a hole in her bathroom.

In a 33-second-clip posted on May 16, the California resident squeals over her cat being stuck inside the wall behind her toilet.

“This is literally so f-king crazy, they f-king patched my cat in the wall,” Vanessa said in the clip with over 10,700 views.

She begins banging against the wall with a metal rod to create an opening for her kitty. After a few heavy hits, she pries the hole large enough for her cat to escape.

“I wish I was joking,” she captioned the video.

However, it takes some convincing for the black cat to come out of hiding. She baits the feline with cat nip near the hole opening.

“Brix, come here,” she called out to the cat. “Come here.”

As the video continues, a black cat slowly emerges from the darkness and strolls to the food.

“I am so sorry,” Vanessa sighs.

The cat’s mom wasn’t the only one feeling remorseful over the feline’s imprisonment. Nearly 70 concerned TikTokers commented underneath the video, astonished by the scenario.

“Omg! You’re the second person I saw this happen to. So sorry,” wrote a TikToker.

“Absolutely not, I’m causing a whole scene,” added another.

“It’s like the movie us…that ain’t Brix no more,” joked a watcher.

“Nah they did that on purpose. There’s no way,” a woman demanded.

But surprisingly, Brix isn’t the only cat who’s been trapped behind a wall.

Previously reported by The Post , a Pennsylvania woman says she was forced to rescue her pet cat after maintenance workers allegedly sealed the poor kitty inside her wall during a repair job gone awry.

“I really can not believe the maintenance team patched my cat into the freaking wall!!” the TikToker wrote. “I feel sooo bad he was probably so scared.”

It seems to be a re-occuring trend for felines to get trapped behind drywall, another cat owner realized their cat was missing for three days in 2022 after being sealed in the wall.

“As I’m sitting here trying to figure out where my cat is, I can hear the cat crying from somewhere in here,” the cat mom said.

Either maintenance workers need to add more preventative steps before sealing walls or cats need to learn to away from big holes.

How my smart home helps care for my pets

I love animals. I’m lucky enough to have a big backyard with plenty of space for seven chickens we call The Ladies, a bunny rabbit named Inle, a large dog named Gus, and an adventurous cat who goes by Smokey. (I think there’s space for a horse, but my husband disagrees.) Caring for my flock is one of my favorite things to do. But with a full-time job and two teenage kids, life gets busy. That’s where my smart home — and pet tech — comes in handy, helping me keep everyone safe, healthy, happy, and fed.

Pet care is a primary use case of my smart home. In fact, about half of all my gadgets are in some way helping me look after the animals — from watching them and feeding them to keeping them comfortable and letting me know where they are or what they need.

Some dedicated pet tech has benefits you won’t find elsewhere. Health tracking features on Fitbit-like devices for pets can be useful, and a pet cam is generally easier to use (and more fun!) than a standard security camera. But a lot of pet tech is overpriced and requires a monthly subscription.

Using standard smart home gear to help with pet care can be cheaper and more effective. An outdoor contact sensor on a garden gate or an “animal detected” alert from a video doorbell notifies me faster than a GPS tracker that Gus has made a break for it, and smart home automations and routines that work for humans can be helpful for four-legged friends, too.

The products I’ve highlighted here are some of my favorite solutions for my particular needs. Of course, not everyone has quite so many animals to look after, and if you live in the city, you probably keep your pets indoors (in which case, I can recommend a good robot vacuum ). Still, this rundown of how I use my smart home for pet care offers tips and solutions to help you put smart tech to work for your pets.

A watchful eye

The Ladies and Inle live in the backyard in a sturdy chicken coop and a palatial two-story, four-room rabbit hutch built by my very handy husband. The coop and hutch are constructed like Fort Knox, but I still worry about predators. (We had an unfortunate raccoon incident a while back.)

To keep an eye out when I’m away from home or sleeping, I use two solar-powered S330 EufyCam security cameras with AI-powered detection, a feature that uses machine learning to analyze the footage from a camera for specific things, such as people, animals, vehicles, or packages. If a creature is spotted outside the pet enclosures, I get a rich notification that includes a snapshot so I can know immediately if I need to dash out there with a broomstick.

Other security cameras, including Arlo, Google Nest, Tapo, and Reolink , offer animal detection. However, the Eufy cameras work with the Eufy HomeBase 3 , a storage device connected to my router that processes the footage locally and helps extend the signal. Eufy’s cameras are the only cameras I’ve tested that reliably connect to my phone and stream from the end of my garden, where I get one bar of Wi-Fi. Because of its local storage and processing, there’s no monthly subscription; the cameras also have solar panels built in, meaning I haven’t had to charge them yet with over six months of use.

Climate control

I live in South Carolina, and the summer heat here can be tough on outdoor pets. We have Barred Rock hens, known for their hardiness in hot and cold temperatures. But still, I like to keep The Ladies comfortable.

I have an Apple Home automation set up to turn on a box fan connected to a Lutron Caséta outdoor smart plug when the Eve Weather sensor detects temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I have a similar setup in Inle’s rabbit cage using different plugs, sensors, and platforms (which I rotate when testing devices), but the Caséta plug, while expensive, has been the most reliable and robust. Additionally, after 3PM when it’s over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I have an IFTTT automation that triggers a Rachio smart sprinkler system to turn on for 30 minutes, giving the chickens a cooling shower. (Inle comes inside when it’s that hot!)

A digital cat flap

Smokey is an indoor / outdoor cat, and we don’t have a cat flap. Instead, I rely on the various security cameras and video doorbells I’m testing around my house to send a motion or animal alert to my phone when he’s walking through the yard to the backdoor or sitting on the front porch waiting to be let in. It’s not a solution for everyone, but it works for me!

In case I miss an alert on my phone, I also have an Alexa Routine set up to play a Christmas bells jingle and announce “Smokey’s Home” from an Echo Show 8 on my desk and a speaker in the living room when the Google Nest Cam (outdoor / indoor) trained on the porch door detects an animal. This routine also plays if the Ring camera in the backyard detects motion. This is useful since it alerts anyone who’s home (such as my parents when they’re pet sitting) that the cat wants in.

Gus prefers to be an indoor dog, so when I have to leave him home alone, I have a camera set up by his crate to keep an eye on him and alert me of any issues. I’ve tried various cameras in this role and have two favorites:

The Furbo 360° Dog Camera ($99). As a dedicated pet cam, this has a host of features you won’t find on other security cameras, including alerts for continuous crying and barking and even vomiting or pooping. However, these features are behind a paywall ($7 monthly, $69 a year), as are recorded videos and the option to automatically turn the camera on and off when I leave.

Since I work from home, I don’t use this enough to justify a monthly subscription, so I rely on the free regular barking alerts to let me know if something’s up so I can drop in on a livestream and use the camera’s treat dispensing feature to help calm him. I also have the Furbo plugged into an Eve Energy smart plug connected to Apple Home to turn it on when I do leave and back off when I’m home.

The Aqara Camera Hub G3 ($110). A more basic pet cam but a better security camera (it has 2K video over the Furbo’s 1080p), the Aqara can also pan and tilt, specifically track dogs and cats, and send noise alerts like the Furbo (all without a subscription). Plus, I can record video for free locally on a microSD card or by connecting it to Apple Home and using Apple HomeKit Secure video. The Apple Home integration lets me program the camera to turn on when I leave home and off when I come back. The camera also looks really cute.

Recently, I’ve been playing with the Samsung SmartThings Pet Care feature, which lets me set up a routine in the SmartThings app that turns on the lights and plays a soothing YouTube pet channel (pictures of puppies and cats with classical music playing) on my Samsung TV during the day. It also sends a notification if it hears Gus barking. It’s been surprisingly effective at calming him, although the sound detection needs some fine-tuning since the robot vacuum also triggered it.

Smart feeding

Automatic pet feeders are great if you work long hours or will be out during your pet’s regularly scheduled mealtime. They’re also very handy for portion control. I use an Aqara Smart Pet Feeder for Smokey’s kibble. At $99, it’s quite expensive and needs an Aqara hub for app control, but it can connect to other smart devices, which lets me set up some useful automations.

My current favorite one is using the Aqara Camera Hub G3 (which also works as a hub for the feeder) to dispense food when an animal is spotted. If I’m away overnight, I’II set the G3 up next to the feeder and turn on the automation in the Aqara app so Smokey gets a fresh treat when he walks up to the bowl (I can limit it to two times a day!).

Keeping track

Pet trackers are helpful for finding a lost pet and keeping an eye on health and wellness with Fitbit-like features that track steps and let you set daily activity goals. I’m currently testing the Petcube GPS Tracker with Gus. It’s a new device that costs $53 upfront and starts at $5 a month for GPS tracking and health features, including total daily activity, total distance covered, and daily activity goals. That’s quite a bargain compared to the competition, which starts at around $8 a month plus the cost of hardware, usually over $100.

Some other pet trackers I’ve tested on Gus include the Whistle Go Explore and the Fi dog collar , both of which were great but have expensive monthly subscriptions. Because most pet trackers are too chunky for a feline, the best option I found for Smokey is the Jiobit Smart Tag . It was also the most precise tracker I tested — accurately showing Smokey’s location and all the routes he traveled that day.
