Best Apps for Speech Delayed Toddlers

best speech delay apps

By Lori Ennis, M.S. Ed

You’ve most likely heard it from your pediatrician, your family and your mama friends. “Every child is different,” and that is true. Every child is different when it comes to development, particularly with speech and language. But, when you recognize that your toddler’s language skills may be delayed, there are many resources you can choose to help them catch up. Speech and language therapy from certified professionals of course is a must, but you can also help your speech delayed toddler with technology. We’ve talked with experts and mamas to find the best apps for speech delayed toddlers. Take a look at what we think you’ll find fun and helpful apps for you and your little one.

Mobile Technology: Making  a Difference for Toddlers with Speech Delay

The age at which your child will hit speech and language milestones will most likely vary from that of every other child because each child is unique and different. Children’s speech and language skills develop at different rates, but generally speaking, most toddlers say around 20 words by 18 month. Typically by the time they’re two, they’re able to put small phrases consisting of two or three words together: “I do it,” “I fix it,” “Her wants the toy”. When your toddler isn’t meeting milestones, though, you most likely will consult your pediatrician and/or professional speech and language therapists. Their insight and knowledge is a wealth of resources for you and your child. These resources can make a huge difference in developing at the rate in which their toddler peers may be as well.

But you also can work with your speech delayed toddler at home or wherever you choose. In this age of technology, there are tons of iPad apps for toddlers with speech delay, and many also have Android versions as well. Research suggest s that the advancement of speech and language apps through mobile technology can promise therapeutic benefits. Better, there are ways that parents can work with their child when they are not able to easily access speech and language professionals.

So, what are the best apps for toddlers with speech delay? Many have free versions that do a decent job of working with toddlers with speech delay. That said, experts and parents also agree that investing in the paid versions can make a difference when it comes to the best apps for toddlers with speech delay.

Articulation Station PRO

We love that this was created by a Speech-Language Pathologist to help children work on articulation, enunciation, pronunciation and so much more. The pictures are gorgeous, and the app can be used with your SLP or at home with you, by merely working on target words and sounds. There is the opportunity to practice at the word, phrase, sentence or story level. While it’s primarily designed to focus on initial, medial and final positions of words, you can also use it for receptive and expressive language skill building. We particularly love that your child can record his or her voice to hear themselves as they work to improve their articulation.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

We’ve always loved all things Duck Duck Moose, and now Khan Academy has taken them under their wing to continue offering parents apps that help their children’s development blossom. This is one of our favorite iPad apps for toddlers with speech delay! Why? Because it uses a familiar and adorable song to teach counting, following a story along, interacting, auditory comprehension and so much more. It gives your toddler a fun and engaging way to navigate the spider through the various activities. We love all of the options for articulation and pronunciation, as well as vocabulary development. It is free, though it does have some in-app purchases available.

MultiSyllabic and MultiSyllabic for Amazon

This app is perfect for toddlers with speech delays because it will meet them at their level and grow with them as their speech skills improve. Particularly fantastic for children who have articulation disorders, apraxia or are on the autism spectrum, this app will combine tactile, visual and auditory components to help improve targeted speech. It uses contextually engaging content like people, food and transportation and incorporates voice modeling for mimicking stress, rhythm and intonation. It’s developed by a Speech-Language Pathologist too.

NACD Home Speech Therapy For Apraxia

If your toddler is struggling with bringing words to her lips, or even getting the sounds out, you are most likely familiar with the term apraxia. Toddlers with speech delays often are diagnosed with apraxia of speech, which means that there is a difficulty in bringing sounds and words to their mouths. We love this app because it can be used for anyone with apraxia, including adults, but it focuses on motor planning especially. Often, apraxia and/or verbal dyspraxia can be attributed to difficulty with motor planning and this app helps with that.

It’s not quite as bright and colorful as some of the other toddler apps, but for parents who are looking to give their child at-home therapy level help, it’s an excellent app for doing so. The National Association for Child Development has lots of resources as well. It’s one of the iPad apps for toddlers with speech delay we recommend, but you can also get it for Android devices.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

Another favorite of parents and clinicians alike, Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is reasonably priced and full of power punches when it comes to speech and language therapy. Kids love the funny little monkey and they love helping him on his learning adventures. It’s easy for toddlers/preschoolers to navigate through and it’s an excellent tool for them to learn sounds and names of colors, letters and tangible objects.

Your toddler will enjoy the meaningful content that comes in the form of counting and naming shapes, and they honestly won’t even know they’re working on vocabulary, receptive language skills and auditory processing and comprehension. It’s one of our favorite iPad apps for toddlers with speech delay, but it is also available for Android users as well.

Every Angle Makes a Difference!

While there is, of course, no substitution for therapy with clinical professionals skilled in speech and language pathology, there are many advances in technology that allow you to work with your toddler’s speech delay as well. As with all things screen and toddlers, moderation is essential, so it’s important to find the best apps for speech delayed toddlers—the ones that they’ll enjoy and get something beneficial from at the same time.

Remember—recognizing a speech or language delay early on will give the best prognosis for appropriate speech development, and you can help with these at-home apps!

29 Best Speech Therapy Apps for SLPs to Target Communication & Language Skills

This is a guest blog post by Holly, a school-based SLP, on the top lists of go-to speech-language therapy apps and how they can be used for interactively targeting communication skills .

Let’s talk about how speech therapy apps can reinforce speech and language therapy!

When it comes to supporting student engagement, smart devices can be a go-to tool in speech therapy. We’ll be taking a tour of our favorite apps and how they can be used for interactively targeting communication skills.

Using speech therapy apps in speech-language therapy has become more common over the last decade (see ASHA’s informational post ). However, it can be challenging to evaluate the quality of speech therapy apps for clinical use ( Furlong et al., 2018 ; see ASHA’s guidance on evaluating procedures, products, and programs). While there’s evidence to support the use of articulation-based apps in conjunction with trained clinician feedback ( McLeod et al., 2020 ), further research is needed to explore the effects of interactive speech therapy apps on different skills, such as social communication ( Griffith, Hagan, et al., 2020 ). As SLPs, we find ourselves in this scenario pretty often: technology is constantly developing, researchers are keeping up as best as they can — so in the meantime, evidence-based decision making largely depends on our clinical judgment and the needs of our students!

There are thousands of speech therapy apps related to our scope of practice, so where do we begin? Before we dive in, here are 9 Tips for SLPs to Use an iPad Like a Pro — just in case you find yourself needing to organize any newly downloaded speech therapy apps from this list. (Note: for the majority of free apps included in this post, you’ll notice they come with a trial, a “lite” version, or frequent ads. While these speech therapy apps have been reviewed, the ads have not. For an extra charge, you can upgrade to get rid of the ads if that’s your preference!)

1. Articulation Apps

Articulation Station – This is one of the most popular articulation apps in our field — and for good reason! Flashcards, memory, and slot machine-style spinners make this app interactive. Price: Free for one sound, then $1.99-$7.99/additional sound or $59.99 for all sounds.

4. Interactive Speech Therapy Tools

You may have heard about using these tools on the computer  — well, there’s an app for that, too! We’ve also included some apps that can be used to adapt materials into digital formats.

5. Family Communication

The last apps included here feature ways to connect with families and send speech and language homework. It can be really powerful to have students involved in this part! I try to make it a habit to send positive notes home to families, and this can reinforce participation in speech therapy for students.

Check out our previous post on this topic: Speech Therapy Homework: One Easy Solution . Many of these tools can be used at the end of a speech therapy session to help students connect the dots between what they’re working on in school and how they can apply these skills at home. For example, at one of my schools, I wrap up sessions by asking my students to summarize what we worked on, then I send a quick message to parents and provide participation points. If your school district uses one of these platforms, you can hop on board!

Class Dojo – With this app, you can share messages, photos, videos, and documents with families. It also has built-in language translation and reward features. iOS, Google Play, & Web Browser. Price: Free.

Edmodo – This is another platform that supports communication between teachers and students and can be used to send documents. iOS, Google Play, & Web Browser. Price: Free.

SeeSaw – This app allows educators to connect with families and share students’ digital portfolios. iOS, Google Play, Amazon, & Web Browser. Price: Free.

Bonus: If students have a favorite character from a book, show, movie, or video game, there might be an app that’s related to their special interest. I find this can really help with buy-in during speech therapy sessions, too!

best speech delay apps

In addition to receiving your free download, you will also be added to our mailing list. You can unsubscribe at any time. Please make sure you read our  Privacy Policy  and  Terms & Conditions .

Why are these the best speech therapy apps for adults?

Creating the best speech therapy apps for adults is our passion. We’ve been making & using speech therapy apps since 2011, and in that time we’ve seen a LOT of apps and have plenty of experience with what works and what doesn’t work.

All the apps on this free list have been used in a clinical setting, vouched for by a practicing clinician, and/or recommended by a client who found success using it. For every app on this list, there were two that were downloaded & discarded for one reason or another. Maybe they crashed, had errors, or showed too many ads. Perhaps the others just overlapped with apps that did more or did the same thing but better. Often speech therapy apps are aimed at children with cartoon graphics and can be demeaning towards adults with communication problems. Those didn’t make this list.

What will I find in the list?

You’ll find 170 apps for:

  • Language (Aphasia)
  • Speech (Apraxia, Dysarthria)
  • AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)
  • Swallowing (Dysphagia)

Each app has an icon, description, price, and up to 4 links:

  • Link to a paid app on the App Store for iPad/iPhone
  • Link to a free app or trial version on the App Store
  • Link to a paid app on the Google Play Store for Android users
  • Link to a free app or trial version on the Google Play Store

Speech Therapy Apps are Always Changing

The prices and availability can change at any time, so please double-check on your device’s App Store or Google Play Store. Some apps may be slightly different on Android and Apple devices, or even created by different developers. Developers can update their apps with new features at any point, either adding or removing functionality, so watch for updates that may affect therapeutic use.

Prices are listed in US dollars. If you are outside the US, check the price on your device for your local currency. The prices are not straight-up currency conversions – they are set in tiers. Many prices outside the US include sales tax (VAT/GST), so they may appear higher than they are.

Titles and icons can also change, so we’ve included links to take you straight to the App Store or Google Play Store. That’s why it’s best that you share this list electronically instead of printing it. Also, if you notice an app that is no longer available, isn’t as advertised, or a great app is missing, please  let us know !

How should I use the list?

Here’s what to do next:

Open the list on the mobile device that you’ll be using for therapy.

Go straight down the Free/Lite column and click the links to download every free app that sparks your interest.

Set aside some time to explore the apps to see if they meet your needs. Keep in mind that many “free” apps still have in-app purchases or subscriptions. Delete the ones you don’t like or want to upgrade.

Look carefully at the apps that are paid, and purchase the ones you want . Spending a few dollars, or even a few hundred dollars, on apps can make your life so much easier than just using the free ones.

Invest in the tools you need , because as with most things in life, quality and convenience are worth paying for.

Ratings and Reviews

Better than salt team.

I use this with my son who is 3, he’s actively getting speech and language therapy for a moderate speech delay. I started using this just as we started the therapy after trying loads of things to help his language development - we don’t get access to this app through our SaLT team so I pay out of pocket. I’ve found this app to be so much more useful that our SaLT therapist. Highly recommend for any other speech delay families, this and DHA supplements (and an awesome nursery) have made the biggest differences for my boy!

Very very good app

Comsidering i have paid for pediatricians and so called online therapists that charge you even more online then face to face and you have to do ALL the work. This app literally spells you everything and shows how you do it. Make no mistake you will learn way less if you have an “one hour all incuided” type of bs… For what you pay its really really good. There is still room for improvement but this is a start of something really really good off the bat.

Just great!

The whole App is just great. The personalised advice via the chat function is incredible. I’m finding the advice given even better than what I have received speech therapy. I would definitely recommend. The developer has really thought this through, there is so much helpful content, presented in a staged manner according to your child’s development. I really think this will help our child with the receptive and expressive vocabulary. Thank you 😊

Yes. Technology isn’t just for kids. Even though kids seem to be naturally drawn to this type of technology, equipment like the iPad makes apps for speech therapy available to people of all ages. As more and more people use technology for everything from making grocery lists to working as a cloud commuter, it becomes a more natural addition to their lives to use apps to assist and improve areas of struggle. The medical and health fields are just some of the areas where adults can benefit from these advances in technology. Children hit milestones at different times and many factors also influence on when and how that child meets those milestones as well. The lessons are fully customizable, depending on the patient’s needs in the first place. You can also monitor the progress and gather the data to keep track of how far the patient has come.

Nowadays, there are many cases that highlight speech delay in kids and the inability for speaking both in kids and adults. Of course, having therapy sessions with professionals is the ultimate way to overcome the issue.

While back then you can only rely on professionals, today you can use apps exclusively designed to overcome speech issues. The apps mentioned above are the best you can find on the Play Store.

Some of them are free, which you can give them a shot. However, if you are interested in using the paid ones, they also offer excellent features to take care of speech delay and other similar issues.

Regardless of your choice, make sure you pick one from the best speech therapy apps that deliver the services you need the most.

Parenting Chaos

The Best Articulation Apps for Speech Therapy with Kids

Sharing is caring!

Over the years we have been working with my son on his articulation delay. For our family, this is one of our most frustrating challenges because we don’t have any answers as to why he has a speech delay. It’s hard to see your child struggle and not know the underlying cause. While I am not a speech therapist I have found these articulation apps through the speech therapists that we have worked with while trying to help my son. We have had a lot of fun with these apps!

15 Articulation Apps for Speech

These articulation apps are not intended to replace speech therapy. Instead, they are a playful way to work on your child’s articulation skills at home or in therapy under the supervision of a trained Speech Therapist.

All of these apps are available on iOS. I apologize for those of you on Android — we are an Apple family and I searched high and low with no success on finding these on Android. If you are an Android user and know of any good apps please leave a comment to help others, because Android is just a platform I am not much help on.

That said, if you are looking for a device for a special needs child I would highly suggest going with an Apple product. We have been using apps with our children for ten years now and Apple has far more available in the special education niche.

9 Best Speech Therapy Apps for Toddlers and Children

6-Best-Apps-for-Speech-Therapy-with-Kids-in-Mind

If you are a Speech Language Pathologist who works with children (or you’re a parent), you may be wondering about the best speech therapy apps for kids.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD ), approximately 80% of children between the ages of three and 17 have a disorder related to:

Fortunately, more than half of these children receive intervention services that are intended to help them learn to communicate more effectively. Speech therapy has aided countless children who previously suffered from a variety of conditions.

Best Speech Therapy Apps for Toddler and Children

Speech therapy can be prescribed for a wide range of disorders.

For example, one in 600 children in the U.S. is born with a cleft palate. The majority receive corrective surgery. However, because this changes the shape of the mouth and face, these children have to learn to make specific sounds all over again.

Similarly, 5% of kids go through a period of stuttering that lasts half a year or longer. Regardless of the cause, the anxiety that often arises from the condition only makes it worse.

In addition, children who are born with autism and are verbal often don’t learn conversational speech by themselves. Instead, they use their own “language,” which, while often making sense to them and their parents or caregivers, is difficult for others to understand.

In all of these situations, speech therapy can be a highly effective treatment to help these children communicate. This, in turn, improves their confidence and social skills.

Focusing on providing children with the language tools they need greatly increases their chances of living a normal, happy life.

Technology and Speech Therapy Apps

Over the past years, apps for computers, tablets, and smartphones have proven to be effective tools in speech therapy for children.

While there are no hard statistics available, Speech Therapists report that many children enjoy working with apps.

This facilitates the learning process.

Another significant benefit of apps is that they’re affordable and offer an easily accessible way for children to practice at home.

Considering the fact that the frequency of practice and the quality of the guidance is critical to progress, apps have the potential to greatly increase and speed up children’s development. For parents who do not have the budget or time to bring their children to a Speech Language Therapist every day, utilizing the best apps for speech therapy provides a distinct advantage.

In those crucial younger years, setting aside fifteen to thirty minutes a day to engage with some of the best speech therapy apps for toddlers will help immensely with their growth. Consider how the apps feel like playtime, and try incorporating them into your normal play schedule.

What’s more, practicing in the safety of their own home with only their family or caregivers around them can make children feel more at ease. Factors such as a comfortable place and being surrounded by people they know will contribute to better performance.

Since there are so many apps out there, it can be confusing to know which ones are effective and which aren’t. That’s why we have selected the best speech therapy apps with kids in mind.

Best AI Speech to Speech Tools

Table of contents.

In the realm of digital content creation, the ability to convert text to lifelike speech is more than a convenience—it’s a revolution. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the capabilities of AI speech-to-speech tools have reached unprecedented levels.

These tools are not only transforming how we create podcasts, audiobooks, YouTube videos, and e-learning modules but also enhancing the accessibility of content across languages and for people with disabilities. Here, we explore the crème de la crème of AI voice generators that excel in delivering natural-sounding voices, a wide range of functionalities, and user-friendly interfaces for a plethora of use cases.

How AI Converts Speech into Natural Sounding Speech

AI speech-to-speech tools are transforming the landscape of communication, breaking down language barriers in real-time conversations with unparalleled efficiency. These tools leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to automate the process of converting spoken language into text (transcription), translating it into another language, and then converting the translated text back into speech using text-to-speech (TTS) technology. This seamless process enables natural-sounding, real-time interpretation between multiple languages, making it invaluable for a wide range of use cases.

The workflow typically begins with the AI voice generator capturing spoken words and converting them into AI text through speech recognition technology. This text is then processed by sophisticated translation algorithms that can handle nuances, idioms, and inflections, ensuring that the translated text retains the original message’s intent and tone. Subsequently, text-to-speech technology synthesizes the translated text into audio files, employing speech synthesis to generate natural-sounding voices in the target language.

Modern AI speech-to-speech tools offer an impressive array of features tailored for diverse applications—from e-learning modules and audiobooks that require high-quality voices in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, and more, to content creation for YouTube videos, podcasts, dubbing , and animations that benefit from lifelike, AI-generated voices. Content creators can discover tools like ElevenLabs, renowned for its natural-sounding speech, voice cloning capabilities, and custom voice options, providing a unique voice for every project.

These AI tools also boast real-time functionality, making them perfect for live scenarios such as international conferences, customer support via chatbots, and interactive voice response (IVR) systems. Through API integration, these tools can easily be incorporated into existing software, allowing businesses to automate voiceovers and create engaging, multilingual content efficiently.

Moreover, the advancements in AI voiceover and AI voice cloning technologies have made it possible to generate synthetic voices that closely mimic human speech, including the speaker’s own voice, thereby personalizing the audio content even further. This technology not only enhances the authenticity of the translated speech but also opens up new possibilities for content creators looking for high-quality, realistic AI voices for their projects.

In terms of accessibility, these AI speech-to-speech tools are designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, with extensive documentation (docs) available to guide users through their functionalities. They offer a range of voices, allowing for customization and modulation to fit the specific needs of the content, whether it be for training videos on TikTok, explainer videos, or voiceovers for e-learning platforms.

Despite the sophisticated technology behind these tools, many offer competitive pricing, including free versions with basic features, making them accessible to a broad spectrum of users, from professionals (pros) to amateur content creators.
