Browse through the following possible scenarios and click the most appropriate link for your current issue.

Open the door of your product, the rating plate sticker should be visible on the top of the porthole. The information usually required by our customer service team are the model number which is 8 digits long (beginning with a 3), and the serial number which is 16 digits long.

In the interest of consumer safety, any adjustments, alterations or replacement parts should only be made or fitted by a suitably qualified and competent person with the machine disconnected from the mains supply.

Close the door. Check that there is power to the machine. Select a programme and press Start Pause. Check if the door locked light is illuminated. If it is not, check the following: 1. Is the machine connected to the electrical supply? 2. Is the electrical supply OK? Check another socket. 3. Has the fuse on the machine blown? If so, replace it.

If the door locked light is illuminated and the machine does not start this means that the machine cannot fill with water, check the following: 1. Check the programme dial is correctly aligned with the programme. 2. Is the water supply to the machine switched on? 3. Are the pipes kinked or restricted in any way?

Check the machine is connected to the electricity supply, and the plug socket is switched on.

Is the power socket working? Try another appliance in the socket to test it.

Has your electricity supply tripped? Check the trip switch on your electric meter.

Once you are certain that there is an electricity supply coming out off the socket, change the fuse in the plug in case it has blown.

Check that the door is firmly shut.

If the indicator lights are on, but the machine still will not start a wash programme, try cancelling the programme by selecting the off position on the control dial. Wait for about 10 seconds, then reselect a spin cycle. If it spins satisfactorily then try the wash programme again.

Error E01 : Door is not locked. Check to ensure the door is locked properly, if it is, you will need to book a service call.

Error E02 : Not filling with water or slow to fill. Refer to ‘ Machine not filling with water’ section of this guide.

Error E03 : Not emptying quickly enough. Refer to ‘Water does not drain away’ section of this guide.

Should your machine produce any other error code, the fault will probably need a technical diagnosis and parts to be fitted, so book a service call to solve this problem.

Has the programme finished? Is the END light illuminated? If not the programme is not complete. Has the door locked light gone out? If not wait a further couple of minutes and the light will go out and you will be able to open the door.

Has the programme finished but the door remains locked? Turn the machine to OFF to reset the machine and this will allow the door to open.

If water remains in the drum refer to 'Water does not drain away'

Not all the detergent has been flushed away. 1. Check the water supply tap is fully turned on. 2. Check the inlet hose is not kinked.

The dispenser drawer will not close properly. 1. Check the drawer is aligned properly 2. Check the drawer is not clogged with detergent

Steam is coming from the dispenser. The machine is designed to vent through the drawer, this is nothing to worry about.

Select a wash programme and open the detergent drawer slightly (no more than 2 inches) and observe if the water comes to the front of the drawer or not. If water does not come to the front of the drawer, or only a small amount of water can be seen, then the water pressure needs adjusting. Make sure that the water tap to the machine is turned on fully and test again.

If the water is on, turn the water off, remove the inlet pipe from the rear of the machine, clean the filter and remove the water flow control restrictors behind the filter at the inlet. See the picture. If the adjustments fail to solve the problem call for service.

Clean the conditioner siphon tube at the rear of the dispenser compartment.

Make sure your conditioner is not too concentrated for dispensing. Try diluting if this is the case.

Make sure the water tap is turned on, and that the roof of the dispenser compartment is clear of any residue.

If the water is on, turn the water off, remove the inlet pipe from the rear of the machine, clean the filter and remove the water flow control restrictors behind the filter at the inlet. See the diagram below. If the adjustments fail to solve the problem call for service.

Make sure that the roof of the dispenser compartment is clear of any residue.

Do not over-fill the conditioner compartment otherwise it will self-siphon.

Shut the dispenser drawer gently to avoid the conditioner self-siphoning.

Ensure that there is not a blockage in the drain hose or the hose is not kinked.

Is the drain hose installed correctly? If connected to the sink waste make sure you have cut the membrane or removed the bung from the under sink drainage unit.

Check if the outlet pipe is plumbed into the down pipe of a sink if it is then there may be a blockage at the connector

Check for foreign bodies in the filter. If present, clean the filter.

Is the fill hose tightened? If so, replace the rubber washers and re-tighten.

Is the standpipe or the household drain blocked? If so, clear the blockage yourself or call a plumber.

Is there clothing or dirt between the door gasket and the door glass? Ensure that the door glass and gasket are kept clean and free of laundry when loading the machine.

Is the inlet pipe at the rear of the machine connected tightly?

Make sure the detergent dispenser is not clogged up with detergent residue

The machine will be fitted with a filter and filter cover. Check to make sure the filter cover is securely fitted

Has the water drained from the machine? If not, see 'Water does not drain away' problem.

Have you selected an option that changes the spin profile (change of spin speed on the selector)? Check the feature in the description of the controls.

Is the load unbalanced? To reduce noise and vibration and improve the machine’s reliability and life, the machine is fitted with an electronic sensor that detects if the load is unbalanced. To improve the spin performance the load can be re-distributed by hand at the end of the cycle and then re-spun.

Has the transit system been fully removed?

Remove the polystyrene blocks which are in bags attached to the inside of the machine

Is the load unbalanced? Stop the programme, redistribute the load and restart.

Check the filter for foreign objects.

Are there any loose items in the pockets of clothing that can rattle in the drum and cause damage?

Some programmes do take a long time (over 2.5 hours). Low water pressure can increase the length of the programme.

This is usually a build up of undisolved laundry dirt which manifests itself as mould and algae. Clean the door seal with an antibacterial cleaner.

To help keep it clean, wipe the door seal dry after every use, and once a month do a maintenance wash at 60°C or above with a detergent that has a laundry bleach in it, and with fabrics that can take that temperature. As a guide colour care, gentle and woollen detergents do not have bleach in them.

This is normally associated with incorrect plumbing arrangements. Check to make sure your plumbing complies to the measurements on this picture.

This is commonly water going into the machine from the sink tee off connection. Make sure the grey outlet pipe goes upwards from the connection to stop water flowing into the washing machine.

Is it the Fast Iron button light? if so, press the Fast Iron button. The machine will pump out the waiter and complete the programme. This is a feature of some of the Delicate programmes

When 2 indicator lights flash together it means that the electronic control system has detected a fault. Check the water supply is on.

Is the smell from water coming from the sink?

Some smells which come from the washing machine are due to a build up detergent and washing residues. This can be overcome by doing a maintenance wash once a month at 60°C or above, with a detergent that has a laundry bleach in it and with fabrics that can take that temperature. As a guide colour care, gentle and woollen detergents do not have bleach in them.

Smelly washing machines can also be overcome by using a proprietary washing machine cleaning agent available from the larger Supermarket Chains.

On some programmes our machines stop during the rinses and do not pump the water out. This is because it may have stopped on the Fast Iron feature. This is where the machine suspends the clothes in water prior to the final spin. Check to see if the Fast Iron light is flashing, if it is then press the Fast Iron button and the machine will pump the water out and complete the final spin.

The machine will not tumble dry on all programmes, this is because not all fabrics are tumble dry compatible. Delicates, acrylics, woollens and silk are some of the programmes that will not go into tumble dry automatically.

Did you give enough time for the machine to complete the function?

If the machine is a sensor dryer, did you select the correct dryness setting?

If the machine is a sensor dryer, did you only put a small load into the machine? Small loads are not compatible with sensor drying. Try using a timed load.

Did the wash programme prior to tumble dry give a good spin? Try spinning the clothes then re-selecting tumble dry.

The machine may not have tumble dried because it will not tumble dry on all programmes, this is because not all fabrics are tumble dry compatible. Delicates, acrylics, woollens and silk are some of the programmes that will not go into tumble dry automatically.

Each drying load will have its own characteristics, for example a large load of towels will have more moisture content than a load of cotton shirts. The load should not be more than the recommended weight otherwise drying efficiency will be impaired. Once you have established the general loads then your time pattern will emerge. It is important to remember that the last 10 minutes of tumble dry time is a cold air only to help alleviate creasing.

Drying in the Sensor mode works most efficiently with larger loads. Should a small load not appear to dry properly or the dryer ends the programme quickly then it is recommended to use a timed drying function

• Check the water supply: Make sure that the water supply to the washing machine is turned on and that there are no issues with the water pressure.
• Check the water inlet hose: Make sure that the water inlet hose is not kinked, twisted or damaged in any way. Also check that the filter at the end of the hose is not clogged with debris.
• Check the water inlet valve: The water inlet valve may be faulty and need to be replaced. You can test the valve with a multimeter to check for continuity.
• Check the water pressure sensor: The water pressure sensor may be faulty and need to be replaced. You can test the sensor with a multimeter to check for continuity.

• First, you should perform a general reset of the machine. Turn the machine off at the powerpoint, wait for one minute, and then turn it back on.
• If you see no change, you can try a Master Reset. This will reset all of the onboard componentry and is often successfully used by appliance technicians. Open and close the door of the washing machine 6 times within 12 seconds. Then, run the rinse/spin cycle without clothing to see if your problems are resolved.

Candy Washing Machine Not Draining? Here’s How to Fix It

There are few things worse than going to take your wash out of the washing machine only to find that it didn’t drain. When the washing cycle doesn’t finish and you are left with garments wet and soggy and not fully clean it can be very frustrating. There could be a number of reasons for the drum to not empty the water but there is no reason to panic.

Very often, the cause of the standing water in your washing machines is an easy fix that you can do yourself. In most cases, it is a blocked drainage pump that can be cleaned out in a matter of minutes to be able to drain water properly. Troubleshooting the problem with washing machines is essential to know what the problem is, however.

In this article, we will take a look at the most common reasons that your washing machine is not draining water properly.

How to manually drain the water from the drum

Before you can begin to help your washing machine drain water properly, you have to get the rest of the water out of the machine. Since Candy washing machines don’t have a tube that will drain the excess water manually, you will need to remove most of the water from the drum to avoid a big mess. Using a large sponge, soak up the water in the drum and squeeze it out over a bucket. This will only get the water that is above the bottom of the metal drum in most washing machines but there will be standing water beneath it that can’t be reached this way. Follow these steps to drain the rest of the water in the drum:

• Electrically disconnect the washing machine by disconnecting it from the main power supply
• Turn off the incoming water by locating the valve that brings water into the washing machine, or by locating the incoming water supply to the whole house
• Have a towel or set of rags ready to sop up the dirty water
• Locate the service flap at the bottom left hand side located low on the washing machine and gently open it to reveal the cap cover of the drainage pipe
• There is no drainage hose for this operation so be prepared for things to get messy
• Unscrew the cap cover of the drain pump filter by turning it anti-clockwise to be slightly open and water starts coming out
• Sop up the excess water until the discharge slows down with the cap slightly open and then open the cover further
• Once the water has stopped coming out of the cover then remove it completely and inspect the filter

Unfortunately, the way this service flap is designed, there is no way to put a shallow container underneath to catch the water so you will have to use a towel to sop it up. There is not much space between the cap cover and the bottom of the washing machine so unless you have yours lifted above the floor with a pallet or something similar there is not much space.

This is how to get the water out of the washing machine, the next step is investigating the cause of the water not draining from the drum correctly.

Top reasons the water is not draining

When you find your garments wet in the drum then you probably think that you will need a technician to come out to fix them. However, we recommend contacting Candy only after you’ve looked into the causes and doing a DIY troubleshooting session. There are some common reasons that this is happening and they don’t indicate that there are significant problems with the machine itself.

Blocked drainage pump

There is a filter in the bottom of the machine that tends to collect large objects and then it gets clogged. It is a drain pump filter but is often called a coin trap since it is very common for coins to slip past the edge of the drum into the bottom of the machine during the spin cycle where it is caught by the filter. There are a number of other articles that often get caught such as small socks, hair bands, safety pins, and many other small items.

Once you have done the job of manually draining the water that the washing machine cycle didn’t do, take a moment to inspect the filter. Remove it completely once you have drained off all of the water and see if there is anything inside. If there is remove it and set it aside. Next, take a look inside the chamber because there are usually items such as small safety pins that will remain in there. There is usually some sludge that builds up from the amount of lint cleaned off of the clothes mixed with soap suds that should be wiped out with a rag or sponge.

Take a look at the impeller that feeds water into the drain pump chamber by trying to move it with your fingers. If it doesn’t move then this could be the reason that the water isn’t draining assuming there were no obstructions in the pump.

If you found some obstructions then replace the cap cover and close the service flap. Turn on the incoming water and reconnect the machine to the mains power.

Now you should run a 90°C washing programme to clean out the machine since you may have some sludge remaining. This will also give you the opportunity to see if the water is now draining properly. If the problem occurs again where the water doesn’t drain then proceed to the next common cause, ie the drainage hose.

Drainage hose is clogged or bent

The drainage hose that expels the water from the drum is a flexible and corrugated type that can easily get kinked. It runs from the machine to the outside drainage pipe either through a dedicated pipe just for the washing machine. Or, it can be attached to the under-sink pipes and flushed away that way.

Since the hose is flexible if you have moved your washing machine recently then it could have bent the hose causing the water to get blocked before draining. This often happens when the machine is overloaded and then unbalanced so it tends to move while shaking around. Then you try to put it back into position and the hose turns out to be kinked. Another factor is if the hose is placed too far down the drainage pipe as this tends to bend the hose too much for water to pass through.

There could even be an obstruction in the hose that is blocking the water. The first thing to look for if the hose isn’t kinked is an obstruction of some kind. Do these steps to check if there is anything in the hose:

• Electrically disconnect the power to the machine by disconnecting it from the mains power supply
• Turn off the incoming water supply by locating the valve to the machine or turning off the water coming into the house
• Remove excess water from the drum using rags or sponges
• Follow the steps to remove the dirty water from the drain pump
• Once the water is drained, remove the hose from the machine end and then withdraw the other end from where it drains into the drainage pipe
• Take the hose into the garden where you can flush it out with a garden hose
• Pay attention to any sludge or item that may have flushed out of the hose
• Once the hose is cleared then reattach it to the machine and drainage pipe
• Turn on the incoming water and reconnect the machine to the mains electrical supply

If there was an obstruction in the hose then congratulations. You successfully found the cause of the blockage and can now count on the correct functioning of your washing machine cycle. However, if there was no obstruction you will need to look further down the water discharge system.

Blocked drainage pipe

Think about how your sink and other fixtures have been draining lately. If water draining has been slow and then you had the issue with the drainage not happening in the middle of the washing programme then you are likely facing a blocked water drainage system. Remove the u-bend under the sink where the sump hose connects to the drainage system. Check for foreign objects or sludge build up and remove it.

If the sink is still draining slowly then use a snake to get any obstructions from further down in the drainage system.

Using too much detergent

Human error is one of the most common causes of many household appliances that fail or don’t work correctly. The Candy machine owner’s manual is quite explicit about not using too much detergent to use because when it is too much it can cause problems with the solenoid valve due to too much soap suds. This will disrupt the machine in its washing cycle and cause the water to not drain properly as you have a filter blocked as a result. The answer is to go through the process of draining the water manually and then running a cleaning cycle to rid the machine of any build-up of soap or sludge in the drain filter pump or the home’s drainage line avoiding an excessive amount of detergent in the future.

At the same time, take a look to make sure that your washing cycle settings are correct and that you don’t have the machine in the ‘anti-crease’, ‘stop water in drum’, or ‘night’ cycles.

Since human error is one of the most common causes of the problems household appliances experience, it is also up to us as owners to be able to fix those problems. Luckily, troubleshooting the Candy washing machine drainage problems is not complicated and recommend contacting a technician to make a service call and fix it until you have tried to look for an object stuck in the filter or foreign objects in the inner part of the machine. In other words, you don’t need to be a trained technician to handle fixing many of the frequent offenders that end up causing you headaches.

When do I need to call a technician when the final drainage doesn’t happen?

After all of the above descriptions of troubleshooting methods have been exhausted and you will have water not draining from the drum correctly then it is likely to be a faulty drainage pump. If you are handy then you could take care of it yourself but it is better to have a trained professional take care of it to avoid a warrants inspection that nullifies itself in case you make a mistake. Take care of the frequent offenders that cause these drainage issues and leave the more significant problems to a trained technician.

What does error code E3 mean?

This is an important error code to pay attention to since it indicates future problems with the water drainage system of the washing machine. It lights up on the display when the washing machine is not emptying quickly enough. It usually means that there is a drainage hose that is kinked, a blocked sump hose, a filter blocked with small objects, or a faulty solenoid valve that interrupts the spin cycle. There may even be an object stuck in the home’s drainage line that slows the flow to expel water.

Why does it stop mid-cycle?

Ther possible cause for this is usually that the setting is not correct and the cycle stops when it should. Check your settings to make sure that you have selected the full wash cycle that will fully drain the drum. Otherwise, look for flashign errord codes on the display that will indicate the possible problem with the machine.

Candy Washing Machine Drum Not Turning — How To Fix

If your Candy washing machine drum isn’t turning, here are issues to check for…

1. Broken Drive Belt

Do the following to replace a broken drive belt in your Candy washing machine…

Step 1. Turn off your washing machine’s water supply and unplug the power cord before attempting any repairs in order to prevent water leakage or electrocution.

Step 2. Go to the back of your washing machine and use a Philips screwdriver to take out the screws securing the rear panel. Once you’ve taken the screws out, pull the rear panel off and set it aside.

Step 3. If still intact, pull the drive belt off the rear of the tub. If the belt is broken, simply pull it out from the base of your washing machine.

Step 4. Take your new drive belt out of its packaging and run it around the rotor at the rear of the tub, and the shaft on the motor.

Step 5. Place the rear panel of your washing machine back on and apply the screws with your Philips screwdriver to secure it.

Step 6. Turn on your washing machine’s water supply and plug it back to the power outlet, then make sure everything is working properly by running a wash cycle.

2. Damaged Motor

Here’s how to replace a damaged motor in your Candy washing machine…

Step 1. Ensure that you turn off your washing machine’s water supply and unplug the power cord from the outlet before attempting any repairs. This will prevent any chances of electrocution and water leakage.

Step 2. Use a Philips screwdriver to take out the screws at the back of your washing machine securing the rear panel. Pull the panel off your washing machine and set it aside.

Step 3. The motor will be mounted at the base of your washer’s tub. Pull the drive belt of the motor and tub rear.

Step 4. Disconnect the grounding connector and the motor connector from the motor assembly.

Step 5. Use a socket wrench to take out the two mounting bolts holding the motor to your washing machine’s tub. Pull the motor out of your washing machine.

Step 6. Get your new motor assembly out of its packaging and put it inside the rear of your washing machine. Line up the mounting loops on the motor with the mounting holes on the rear of the tub and apply the mounting bolts to secure.

Step 7. Connect the two electrical connectors to the new motor assembly. Loop the drive belt around the shaft on the motor and the rotor at the back of the tub. Put the rear panel of your washing machine back on and apply the screws with your Philips screwdriver to secure.

Step 8. Plug your washing machine back to its power source and turn on the water supply. Make sure the issue has been fixed by running a wash cycle.

Candy Tumble Dryer Drum Loose — Solved

If your Candy tumble dryer drum is loose, you’ll need to replace the bearing. Here’s how to do this…

Step 1. Before attempting any repairs on your tumble dryer, make sure to unplug the power cord in order to prevent any chances of and electrocution.

Step 2. Open the door of your tumble dryer and pull the kick strip off the lower front section of your tumble dryer.

Step 3. Flip the two levers on the condenser unit and pull the unit out of your tumble dryer. Take out the water unit below the condenser unit housing and set it aside.

Step 4. Take out the screws at the back of your tumble dryer holding the top panel and pull the panel off the appliance.

Step 5. Use your screwdriver to take out the two screws holding the control panel to the front of your machine. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the control panel and set the panel aside (ensure that you take note of the positioning of the connectors).

Step 6. Detach the plastic piece connected to the drum from behind the main front panel by undoing the four screws around the door opening, the two screws at the top of the front panel, and the two screws at the bottom of the front panel.

Step 7. Peel the door seal off the door opening and set it aside. Use a nut driver to take out the two nuts next to the door hinge holding the main front panel and detach the panel from the dryer. Disconnect the electrical connector connected to the door lock assembly and set the main front panel aside.

Step 8. Disconnect the NTC sensor wire connector and use a screwdriver to take out all the remaining screws at the front of your dryer.

Step 9. Pull the wires at the top right corner out of the plastic retaining clip. Lift the plastic piece covering the drum and pull it off the tumble dryer.

Step 10. Go to the back of your tumble dryer and use a screwdriver to take out the screws holding the back cover. Use your screwdriver to remove the bearing cover at the back of your dryer.

Step 11. Take out the two screws holding the heater assembly to the back off your dryer and set the heater aside. Remove two screws directly above and directly below the bearing hole.

Step 12. Reach inside the little space at the bottom right side of the drum and pull the drive belt off the pulley wheel. Slide the drive belt backwards while moving the drum forwards and remove the belt from the drum.

Step 13. Carefully pull the entire drum out of the machine. Set the drum on the floor and turn it over. Use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to pull the clip of the bearing hole underneath the drum.

Step 14. Pull the bottom plate and washer from the drum. Use a screwdriver to undo the two screws on the bottom plate. Use your screwdriver to knock the bearing out.

Step 15. Take your new bearing out of its packaging and fit it into the housing plate. Put the housing plate back on the bottom plate and apply the two screws to secure it.

Step 16. Put the bottom plate and washer back unto the bearing shaft at the bottom of the tub. Fit the retaining circlet into the groove at the base of the tub (use a screwdriver if needed).

Step 17. Reach inside the fan housing and pull out the plastic trim. Use a socket wrench to take out the nut at the center of the fan blades. Pull the fan blades out of the housing and set them aside.

Step 18. Slide the top panel of the fan housing backwards and pull it out of the machine. Carefully slide the drum back into the machine. Loop the drive belt around the drum and slide the belt back until it rests on the line indicated on the drum. Loop the belt around the motor shaft.

Step 19. Go to the back of your dryer and carefully reach through the opening and turn the drum so that the bearing is perfectly lined up with the bearing hole.

Step 20. Insert a screw into the hole beside the hand hole to hold the drum. Use one hand to lift the drum and use the other hand to a insert a screw into the hole directly above the bearing hole. Use a Philips screwdriver to apply the screw.

Step 21. Use your screwdriver to take out the holding screw beside the hand hole at the back of the machine. Also apply the screw directly below the hand hole.

Step 22. Line up the heater assembly with its appropriate holes and apply the two screws to secure it. Put the back cover of the heater assembly back on and secure it by applying the two screws.

Step 23. Put the bearing cover back on and secure it by applying the screw.

Step 27. Put the tub cover under the wiring and snap it in place on the dryer frame, then apply all the screws at the front of your dryer. Roll the drum a bit to make sure it is lined up with the front cover.

Step 28. Snap the bundle of wires into the retainer on the frame. Pass the NTC sensor connector through the opening on the cover and connect it to its appropriate terminal.

This can indicate a range of faults including problems with the motor, the wiring in the machine and faults on the printed circuit board.

We are going to be going through everything you need to do to fix your washing machine when it has an E09 fault code.

Try turning it off and back on again

It might seem simple, but because the E09 fault code indicates a problem with the control board, it’s actually a good idea to isolate the machine from the power.

You should disconnect the machine from the power and let it stand for around 5 minutes.

When the machine has been disconnected for 5 or more minutes, you should then connect it back to the power and test.

If the machine continues to display the error code, it probably means something more serious is going on with the machine.

Check the motor cables

The motor triac is responsible for turning the machine clockwise and counterclockwise.

So that the control board can tell the motor to do this, it needs to be connected directly with wires.

If the machine has recently been shaking around then it might have caused a wire to come off or even damaged one of the cables.

You should check the cables that are connected to the motor connection block and trace them all the way up to the control board.

Check the hoses

From time to time, check the hoses for signs of wear. This will guarantee a smooth flow of water and will prevent its wastage. Check that there are no cracks, bulges, that they are tight enough and that there are no water leaks.

Clean the outside and the door

Always keep the outer shell of the washing machine clean . This operation does not take much time: simply dust with a damp cloth. Same thing as the glass on the door , clean it regularly with a damp cloth and it will shine like a new-brand one.

Keep the dispenser tidy

The detergent we pour in the dispenser for the laundry is not always used completely by the washing machine and many times the residues remain encrusted in the drawer and transforms into mold. Brush the filter

The filter of the washing machine has the important task of blocking any small particles that could remain stuck in the pump. Therefore, it is important to inspect it and clean any accumulated dirt. Clean it at least once every 6 months with a toothbrush to prevent the blocked filter from causing malfunctions.

Empty load wash

Once every two months, do an empty load wash at 60°C. It will be useful to clean the inside of the basket and the seals. Add two tablespoons of vinegar and half a cup of detergent halfway through the wash for a perfect result.

Do not overload!

Overloading the washing machine could throw the machine off balance and damage it. If you have too many items to wash, divide them into multiple piles to clean separately. However, even loading too little can cause problems; always try to balance your laundry according to the ability of your machine.

Remove the finished load

Once the washing is complete, remove the finished load immediately , transferring it to the dryer, or putting it to dry. Common washing machine problems can range from using too much detergent, to water covering your floor. Some are easy fixes and others may require hiring a professional to diagnose and do the repairs for you. Regardless of what you choose, having washing machine problems is never enjoyable, and most households need to get this vital appliance back up and running as soon as possible.

Common Washing Machine Problems

There's never a good time for your clothes washer to act up, but taking action sooner vs. later can help keep a small problem from developing into something far greater.

We've compiled a list of the most common washing machine problems to help you troubleshoot and pinpoint the cause of the problem. With the knowledge of why your washer is malfunctioning, you'll be able to plan your next step in how you'll resolve the problem.

As always, whenever you work on electrical appliances, safety should be a top concern. Remove the power source to the washer before troubleshooting or attempting repairs. 

Washer Won't Turn On

If your washing machine doesn't respond when you turn it on there may be a simple fix. There's a number of solutions that range for serious to simple, but the best place to begin is with the power supply itself.

The first thing to check is if your washing machine is getting power. Using a multimeter check the outlet voltage. If there isn't electricity flowing into your washer you'll need to check your household electrical panel to see if any circuit breakers may have been tripped. 

If there wasn't a tripped breaker and your outlet isn't "hot" then the problem may be with the outlet itself. Turn the breaker off and contact a qualified electrician to replace the outlet and troubleshoot the cause. 

If the washer's motor overheated the washer will shut down to allow it to cool before you can start it again. If this happens once or twice it may not be a problem, but if your motor frequently overheats it's critical to find out what is actually causing this to happen.

Appliance Repair

Washing machines are designed to stop working when the lid is open. The  lid switch is a small plastic piece located under the lid. In order for the switch to activate, the lid must be shut. Check to see if the switch is in good repair and properly positioned.

Some models require the  timer knob to line-up exactly with the control panel graphics. If the knob is slightly out of alignment, the washer won't run. To check this, simply advance the timer and try to restart the washer again. 

Washer Not Draining Properly

Drainage problems can range from being as simple as a clog in the drain hose to needing to replace a pump. But one thing is certain, when you have a problem with draining you'll be very aware . . . the mess on the floor may be your first and only clue!

Many times a clogged drain hose is the reason your washer isn't draining properly. Remove the hose and visually inspect it for clogs. A garden hose can be used to flush any stubborn blockages from the hose.

• Check the drain hose for kinks.
• Check any lint filters that may be in or on the drain hose.
• Are you having problems with the home's drain system?
• The drain hose should be above the level of water in the drain tub.
• Is the standpipe a minimum of 1-1/4" in diameter?
• Is the drain hose sealed into the standpipe? If this is the case, back-siphoning can occur. It should never be sealed.
• The standpipe should be less than 96" in height.

If you suspect that your drain pump is jammed, you'll need to drain your tub then disconnect and inspect the hoses for foreign objects. Don't forget to check the pump inlets. You may need to remove the pump from the washer in order to get a good look.

If you are having problems with your pump, there's a chance that it may have locked up and seized. The motor will continue to run and attempt to turn the pump. If the pump is belt-driven, the belt will burn through or break, there is even a chance that the pulley could break. Things can go from bad to worse if the motor continues to run with tension on the belt, which can cause the motor to seize.

Another possible issue could be that the bearings seized on the pump, or it may have become jammed by a pen, coin or sock. It's also possible that the impeller blades have broken. In most cases, a new pump will fix the problem.

Foreign Objects

If items such as socks, pens and coins get wedged between the basket and the tub, or become lodged in the pump, the washer's ability to drain properly will be greatly reduced and even can come to a full stop. You'll need to open the cabinet to gain access so that you can search for any obstructions.

Detergent 

If too much detergent is used there will be far too many suds. Too many suds will prevent the washer from draining in a timely manner.

Washer Will Not Spin and/or Agitate

There's a number of things that can prevent your washer from spinning correctly. Unfortunately,  you'll most likely need to open the cabinet in order to properly troubleshoot the problem. Let's start with the easy fixes first, because sometimes the problem is as simple as the washer being in a soak cycle! 

Too Large of Loads 

A washing machine will become unbalanced if there are too many clothes being washed in the same load. An overloaded machine will become unbalanced and not properly spin. This can also occur if the clothes are not evenly distributed within the basket.

If this is your problem, you'll need to adjust the load during the cycle to help your  washer balance. You can do this either by removing all of the clothes and replacing evenly within the basket or simply moving them within the basket so that they are evenly distributed. 

Switches and Settings

The lid switch is located inside the cabinet near the door frame, and it's designed as a safety precaution to keep hands from entering a spinning washer basket. A faulty switch will prevent the washer from running. If the switch is bad, it will need to be replaced.

You can also check the setting to ensure that the speed selector switch is properly positioned. It should not be set between different speeds.

It's possible that a foreign object is lodged in the drain pump . You'll frequently hear a humming sound when the washer is full of water if this is your problem. 

A washing machine has a number of belts and as they wear, they can show signs of damage and even break. If you notice a belt that is showing signs of wear, you should replace it with a new one.

If your problem was due to a broken belt, be sure the check that the pulley hasn't seized. The belt may not have been the root problem. If the pulley seized, it will usually cause the belt to break. If you replace the belt, but not fix the pulley, you'll have the same problem in the very near future.

The main drive motor is responsible for spinning and agitating the basket. The washer motor creates the spinning directly, and frequently with the use of a clutch. Within the washer's transmission there's a crank type gear with connecting rods that cause the basket agitate. 

Possible Issues

• If there's little or no agitation, the splines that connect the agitator to the drive shaft could be stripped and in need of replacement.
• In some washers a reversing motor is used. If you notice that your basket spins perfectly in one direction, but in the opposite direction it won't work all you may need to replace the motor. Unless you are comfortable doing this, its probably best to contact a professional.
• A coupler is used to connect the motor to the transmission. Over time, this part will wear and need to be replaced.
• If you suspect a transmission or clutch issue, it's generally best to contact a professional as these can be relatively complex problems.

Washing Machine is Leaking Water

Beyond the mess that a leaking washer makes, the problem doesn't always mean an expensive repair bill. Many times the solution is an easy fix or an inexpensive part.

When a washer leaks only during the spin cycle the likely cause is the drain hose .

Check the Following

• Check the connections on the hose to ensure they are secure.
• Check the condition of the drain hose, it should be free of cracks and damage.
• Check the drain hose for any clogs. You might just find your missing sock!
• Check the drain hose where it attaches to the washer. There should not be any cracks or leakage, if there is, you may be able to cut the end and re-clamp the hose. Although, you may want to consider purchasing a new one.

• Check that the fill hoses are in good repair and securely in place. (They should not be over-tightened).
• Whenever these hoses are removed, a new rubber washer should be used when they are being put back in place. If a new rubber washer wasn't used, the problem could be the washer.

Water-Inlet Valve

Check the water-inlet valve for leaks. There may be a build-up of rust or mineral deposits within the valve, or it may be faulty and need to be replaced.

Too Much Detergent

If you have hard water and use a water softener, your leakage problem may be the result of over-sudsing. Hot- and soft-water use less detergent to effectively clean than cold- and hard-water. Reducing how much detergent you use may eliminate an over-sudsing issue.

When you have too many suds and they "spill over" it may appear that you have a leak. The sudsy overflow can be resolved by reducing the amount of detergent you're using.

Door Seal (front-load)

Front-load washers frequently develop leakage around the door seal as this is a common area for debris to build-up. Over time, the build-up will reach a level where the door will not be able to properly seal and water will be able to seep out. Generally, you can solve this problem by carefully cleaning the seal.

Drain pumps have a seal on the pulley that will often leak due to wear. Many pumps are designed with a weep hole allowing the water to drip out as the seal begins to fail. So, whether you find a small amount of water or a flood near your drain pump, you may have uncovered the source of the leak. The pump will need to be rebuilt or replaced. 

Drains and Hoses

If you notice intermittent leaking when the washer is flushing, the problem may be with the plastic bleach dispenser. Bleach is an extremely corrosive chemical and it can cause plastic parts from the bleach dispenser to crack or even break off. In which case it will need to be replaced. 

The use of large amounts of liquid chlorine bleach can pit and rust stainless steel components. Consider using oxygenating bleach. It's less harsh for your washer, although it should be noted that it's not as effective at getting your whites bright.

If the tub is the cause of your leak, your options are limited. When a tub develops a hole from rubbing while off balance or other from reasons, the best choice is usually to purchase a new washer . 

Replacing the tub usually isn't cost effective. However, you could try sealing the leak with an epoxy . If nothing else, it may buy you a little time.

The main tub seal is located where the outer tub connects to the transmission. If you suspect that this is your problem it is usually best to contact a professional as it can be a very difficult job. You may want to weigh the pro's and con's of replacing the seal vs purchasing a new washer.

Washer Does Not Dispense Detergent

If you have an automatic detergent dispenser there are two common issues that can cause this problem.

• The dispenser needs to be cleaned - Clean the dispenser monthly with a cup of warm distilled white vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the dispenser and run the washer thru a regular cycle. Any built-up residue or clogs will be flushed thru and your dispenser should work as good as new.
• Incorrect product - Using the right product can make all the difference in the world. If your washer was designed for liquid bleach, using a powder bleach can clog the dispenser and lines. Check your owners manual to find the type of product designed for your unit.

Washing Machine is Shaking and Moving

It might seem alarming when your washer is making noises and moving around, but the solution is generally pretty simple.

If the floor isn't level your clothes washer will definitely jump around. Many of the wash cycles, such as spin, can easily thru the unit into a shaking and banging mode, and if the washer is sitting on an uneven floor it will even add to the movement. 

Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Position the washer on a piece of 3/4" plywood. You can use shims if needed to bring the plywood to a level surface, but usually the plywood will do the trick.

Washer Feet Improperly Positioned

Washing machines are designed to be adjusted to the floor surface so that they sit level and do not rock. The 2 front legs have a leveling mechanism with a lock nut to secure it in place. Adjust each leg to the correct height and tighten the lock to keep the leg from moving. There shouldn't be any movement in the front 2 legs once they are set. 

The back 2 legs may have the same design as the front or they may be self-adjusting. If they are self-adjusting, tilt the washer forward onto it's front legs so that the rear legs are roughly 3" in the air. Then set the unit down to allow the legs to automatically adjust.

Load is Unbalanced

If your laundry is off balance you'll need to open the washer and adjust the load. You may need to make a couple of attempts in order to get it balanced again.

Washing too many clothes in a load can exceed the maximum load weight and cause the washer to go off-balance.  Check your owners manual for load size recommendations, but as a general rule, the clothes shouldn't be packed too tightly allowing them  room to move freely.

Washing Machine is Noisy

A noisy washer could be as simple as a foreign object being somewhere it shouldn't, or it could be a clue that a part needs to be replaced. First rule out the simple fixes, which are listed below, and then read our extensive article on the causes and solutions for a noisy washer.

A gurgling sound could be an indication that something is obstructing the drain line, but not enough to fully clog the hose. Remove the blockage to prevent it from becoming a full blown clog which will most likely cause a flood.

If you hear a clicking sound you may have an object lodged in the washer drain.  You may have inadvertently missed a coin or other item left in a pocket. Check your drain and remove any foreign objects.

Buzzing or Humming

A foreign object may be lodged in your pump if you are hearing a humming or buzzing noise. If an object finds it's way into the pump it's not uncommon for the pump to jam. You may need to replace your pump if there was serious damage, but often just removing the object will solve the problem.

Washer Smells

It's not uncommon for a washer to develop a musty or mildew smell. This can occur either in or around the appliance, and it's an indication of mold and bacteria growth. The washer tub provides a perfect dark, moist area for mold and bacteria to thrive.

All washers develop what is called a "bio-film" which is decaying matter that's always damp. Some washers are more prone to this build-up than others. Over time it'll begin to smell and if left untreated, the smell can spread into your laundry. In worst case situations, it can even cause the laundry room and other nearby rooms to smell. A good habit to develop is to clean your washing machine every month, and be on the lookout! Periodically check the area around your washer for mold or mildew. If your walls, cabinets or other areas show signs of mold or mildew growth there may be an issue with moisture that needs to be addressed. 

• Too much detergent will create excessive suds and a dirty residue will build within the basket and other washer parts.
• Use the correct amount of detergent and fabric softener. This is probably the best defense simply because it's actually limiting the food supply. 

Temperature

• Hot water will help dissolve the layer of bio-film. A hot soak or wash on your final load can be a great preventative measure, especially if you prefer washing in cold water.
• If you have a reoccurring mold problem or you don't use your washer frequently, you can run a second rinse cycle when you're doing laundry to help prevent mold and mildew growth. 

Drain Pump Filter

The drain pump filter should be cleaned once a month, but few homeowners perform this task unless there's a problem. Frequently coins and other small items get caught in this filter and cause the water flow to slow creating an ideal location for mold and mildew growth. 

Washing Machine Won't Finish it's Cycle

This is an easy problem to troubleshoot. If your washer continues running even after the cycle should have finished, it most likely means that the timer is defective.

Remove the control panel and check the timer contacts for corrosion or scorching. A new timer will fix this problem.
