2 years of experience in retrospective data collection, patient interviewing and interacting with a variety of patient populations in a variety of patient settings.

2 years of experience ensuring compliance with research regulations.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Federal and State regulations and International Guidelines related to Good Clinical Practices in clinical research.

Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Possess written and verbal communications skills to communicate with fellow team members, supervisors, patients, and other hospital personnel.

Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies and procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).

Job Summary:

The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) will perform independently or with general direction at the fully operational journey level of the series to execute, manage, and coordinate research protocols, as directed by the Clinical Research Supervisor in the Department of Surgery as part of the Clinical Research Core. Under the Clinical Research Core, the Clinical Research will be assigned studies across the 7 divisions in the department based on Principal Investigator needs; may coordinate the data collection and operations of several concurrent clinical research studies under the guidelines of research protocols, UCSF and regulating agency policies.

The CRC’s duties may include, but will not be limited to supporting the management and coordinating the tasks of single or multiple clinical research studies, depending on their size and complexity; act as intermediary between services and departments while overseeing data and specimen management; manage and report on study results; create, clean, update, and manage databases and comprehensive datasets and reports; coordinate staff work schedules, assist the Clinical Research Supervisor with study start up activities, and assist Clinical Research Supervisor and/or PI with oversight of other research staff; manage Investigator’s protocols in the Committee on Human Research online system, as well as renewals and modifications of protocol applications and the implementation of new studies; participate in the review and writing of protocols to ensure institutional review board approval within University compliance; help assure compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies; oversee study data integrity; implement and maintain periodic quality control procedures; interface with departments to obtain UCSF approval prior to study initiation; maintain all regulatory documents; report study progress to investigators; participate in any internal and external audits or reviews of study protocols; and perform other duties as assigned.

Department Description: The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of eleven divisions that include Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including: UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents also rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center. The Department of Surgery Chair’s Office is an extremely high profile, fast paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs which require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality and compliance. The Chair’s Office is responsible for management, direction and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees and staff personnel.

Required Qualifications:

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions and companies; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population.
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with biology coursework included.
  • Fluency in the usage of Committee of Human Research (CHR) online iMEDris system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system.
  • Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation.
  • Certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: Access, Stata, SASS/ SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms.

Department Description: T he Department of Medicine is the largest department in the UCSF School of Medicine. To advance health, the Department of Medicine develops and supports innovators in patient-centered care, scientific discovery, medical education and public policy across 5 main sites (Mission Bay, Parnassus, ZSFG, VAMC, and Mt. Zion) and 39 divisions.

The Division of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF.

Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: General Cardiology; Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Cardio-Oncology and Immunology; Critical Care Cardiology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; Interventional Cardiology; and Preventive Cardiology.

Required Qualifications:

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Attention to detail; articulate; self-motivated; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with study subjects, team members, other departments and outside collaborators; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population.

  • Familiarity with FileMaker Pro software for data collection and management
  • Previous budget management experience.
  • Experience with electronic and hardcopy medical records.
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: Access, Stata, SAS/ SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms.
  • Experience with biostatistics and epidemiological analytic techniques
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS), rigor of science education
  • Excellent computer skills and expert familiarity with the following software programs: Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Excel) and graphic programs (Adobe).
  • Science, research, or medical background
