Hugo House’s Scribes summer writing camp for young people goes digital this year

Arianne True was 15 years old when she wrote “Poem for The Name on a Tombstone,” the first piece she would perform at a poetry slam, as part of Seattle nonprofit community writing center Hugo House’s Scribes summer creative writing camp for fifth through 12th graders.

Thirteen years later, she’s teaching at the same camp, and sees her work from that age, with its particular teenage earnestness, as an asset to help her students.

“I was like, oh yeah, this is the kind of poetic stuff they’re working through,” True said of rereading her own work. “Or, this is what’s really pressing for them to write about. I remember so many of the lessons that I really loved and that changed something for me.”

She wants to have that same impact on her students, but has to do so through a computer screen now that the camp moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Classes are now being offered via Zoom video conferences and Google Classroom and teachers are trying to figure out how to build a special experience for their students from far away. The classes, which focus on a variety of forms including poetry, prose, screenwriting and more, are offered from July to August and last from one to two weeks.

Poet True is teaching two classes at the camp, a one-week session for grades 9-12 in collaboration with the Northwest African American Museum that starts July 13, and a one-week general creative writing class for middle schoolers with teacher and writer JP Kemmick that starts Aug. 10.

For the former, True and her co-teacher, poet Naa Akua, are currently set to video call students from the museum and use the collections to engage students writing poetry and prose and reflecting on the Black experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Young-adult novelist and Scribes teacher Karen Finneyfrock said that although the particular magic of a summer camp is not possible this year, teachers are doing what they can with strategies such as frequent breakout rooms for small group collaborations and time for students to get away from their computer screen.

“It’s a different experience, but in a way, I think we’re going to learn a lot from this,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what the benefits are going to be yet, but I feel hopeful that there will be some.”

When True attended, and as is common practice for Scribes camps, frequent field trips took students to local museums and landmarks. Now, field trips involve attendees taking their peers on “field trips” of their own home and immediate surroundings, featuring the occasional appearance of a household pet.

Poet and Scribes teacher Sierra Nelson said that despite the challenge, the camp is now all the more important to give students both the opportunity to meet new people and a creative outlet.

“It’s been a very intense time of isolation and also wanting to connect, to be able to give voice or to be heard,” she said. “I think Scribes can offer that.”

One benefit to the online transition is increased accessibility for students. This year, the camp is operating on a pay-what-you-can scale to alleviate the financial burden tuition could impose during an uncertain time. Full scholarships for classes are also available by application .

The digital venue also means it’s opened up to those outside of the Seattle area — Samar Abulhassan, who is teaching three classes during the camp, said her class includes students from Oregon and the East Coast.

Abulhassan said she’s trying to digitally create a welcoming writing community encouraging open creation instead of critique.

“We’re not looking for a finished product,” she said. “We’re really looking to showcase what the writing process feels like and looks like in actual time. We try to encourage stumbling and meandering and wandering.”

True said this exploration of the writing process is central to her teaching, and tries to replace the idea that the writing process has to be a tortured struggle with an open, supportive environment instead. It’s a shift that’s even made her look at her earlier work a little more lovingly, and she looks to continue that mission this year in her classes.

“I want them to understand that whatever they have to do to take care of themselves is great,” she said. “Getting their needs met is my No. 1 priority as their teacher, and helping them learn that they deserve to have their needs met.”

Creative Writing Program

pink sky over blue mountains and water

The University of Washington English Department's Creative Writing Program offers a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and a two-year Master of Fine Arts  degrees in Poetry and Prose.

Founded in 1947 by Theodore Roethke, the Creative Writing Program's tradition of transformative workshops continues with our current faculty:  David Bosworth , Nikki David Crouse ,  Rae Paris ,  David Shields,  and  Maya Sonenberg  (Prose), and  Linda Bierds (part-time) ,  Andrew Feld ,  Richard Kenney,  and  Pimone Triplett  (Poetry).  They include among their many honors fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as prizes such as the Flannery O’Connor Award in Short Fiction and the McCarthy Prize. The list of our alumni publications represents a significant chapter in the history of American literature.

The MFA Program remains purposely small, admitting only ten students per year. The relatively small size of our program (20 students at most at any given time) allows for close associations to develop among students and faculty. The first year is devoted to participation in workshops and literary seminars, and the second year allows for concentrated work on a creative manuscript and critical essay under the supervision of two creative writing faculty members.

The BA in English with a Creative Writing Concentration prepares students not only to be more effective communicators and artists, but also creative problem solvers and more nuanced critical thinkers. By situating small, student-oriented writing workshops alongside literary models, Creative Writing classes enhance the broader study of literature and critical theory, helping students gain a greater understanding of the social and cultural forces informing their work. A student completing the program is more able to situate themselves in a larger aesthetic and social context and make more meaningful, informed decisions about their own artistic practice. In addition, through the intense practice of creative writing, students are able to see the world more clearly, in a more nuanced and meaningful manner, and apply these skills to a wide variety of work and life situations.

Reviews from Past Students

Nick O’Connell, founder of The Writer’s Workshop, helped me with the concept for my book, Colors of the West , published in 2017 by Mountaineers Books. We worked together for six months on one of the chapters. Nick gave me valuable assistance with four drafts, which he read with care, offering detailed suggestions for crafting a lively non-fiction narrative. My book would not have gotten off the ground without his insights and experience!

The essay I wrote with your help is in this week’s issue of Newsweek . It is quite exciting – thanks for your help and encouragement in your online writing class. There is very little change from the original, so we must have done good!

I really appreciate all of your great feedback in the online writing class, particularly the fact that you went through my writing very carefully. Although I learned a lot in the Writers Digest Fiction course it was mostly through my efforts – instructor feedback was usually limited to two or three sentences of general comments that were not particularly helpful.  I will stick with you, Jessica Murphy and Scott Driscoll in the future.

It was 20 years ago you urged me to submit a story I’d written in your Seattle writing class to the Seattle Weekly . They published it in February 1993. Best money I ever made. I’ve been a journalist/ reporter ever since then all over the country, including the Hartford Courant . Thank you.

I took Nick O’Connell’s Seattle writing class “Stalking the Nonfiction Narrative” when I was stuck on the first draft of my book. He helped me break through barriers, giving me the techniques to create a solid structure for my book. Then he worked with me as a writing coach and gave insightful feedback that enabled me to craft my story into a publishable manuscript. Throughout the whole process, he encouraged and advised me on all aspects of the writing and publishing. Nick was a huge part of my recent book sale, and I would recommend him to any writer–-whether you just want to improve your technique or to publish professionally.

Do you have a compelling story? Want to learn the craft of narrative writing? Dr. Nick O’Connell teaches time-honored principles with a relaxed style in four enjoyable Seattle writing classes. From nut graph to structure, from lead to climax, Nick has transformed my writing career from scientific researcher to riveting narrative non-fiction author.

Nick, I am so grateful for the opportunity to take your summer nonfiction seminar through The Writer’s Workshop.  It was the summer of 2008, and I was in the midst of making big changes in my professional life.  The writing class proved to be the kick-off to my new path as a food and wine writer on the east coast.  Now as wine columnist and a restaurant reviewer for the  Boston Globe , I regularly use the techniques of narrative writing to bring readers into the action of a story and to create engaging scenes out of everyday moments.  Thank you for fostering a supportive learning environment in your writing classes that played a key role in my development as a professional writer.

Sometimes the most influential people have no idea of the impact they have on others. I just wanted you to know what a tremendous difference you have made to my writing life and to share the great news that an essay of mine will be published in a Seal Press anthology, Ask Me About My Divorce: Women Open Up About Moving On , that is scheduled for release in May 2009. Your kindness, your style, your generous sharing of your craft, your respect for everyone… it all had a deep impact on me and gave me the courage to write from my heart.

Here Are Some Great Local Summer Camps

By Seattle Met Staff January 29, 2024

creative writing summer camp seattle

We may be  in the midst of winter, but summer camp registration is off and running . Finding camps is tough enough, but finding ones your kids are actually psyched to attend? Way harder. Local museums are a great place to start.  SAM , the Pacific Science Center , Seattle Aquarium , and the Museum of Flight all have robust camp schedules. Woodland Park Zoo's camps are notably beloved, and notably tough to get into. Like coffee shops, the best sports camp is the one closest to your house (but TGA , Skyhawks , SYSA , and the Nike sports camps are great options.)

What does that leave? Quite a lot, actually...

Steve and Kate's Camp

Bothell, Bellevue, Everett, Lake City

A decades-old national program does local summer camps from Capitol Hill to the Eastside. The flexibility is bonkers, both for you and your kids: You can buy a pass for individual days and get refunded for any days you don’t use. Kids set their own schedule, wandering between activities like sewing, baking, stop-motion animation, even the occasional bounce house. Steve & Kate’s also offers the holy grail of summer camps: lunch included.

Arena Sports

Issaquah, Magnuson Park, Mill Creek, SoDo Redmond

With five locations (plus some summer satellites) and tons of flexibility (full days, half days, single days, partial weeks), Arena Sports can be a vital summer camp safety net, especially to fill in gaps in your family’s schedule. Days here are filled with games like soccer and dodgeball.

FrogLegs Cooking School

Issaquah, Kirkland, Redmond, University Village

Even kids who don’t necessarily love to cook enjoy the hands-on action of prepping a menu, then eating it (with lots of breaks and fun in between). You can sign up for the full week or individual days. And yes, lunch is included.

Wilderness Awareness School

Some of the best parks in the city and region become training grounds for identifying animals or plants and general exploration—not to mention classic camp stuff like songs and games. Older kids can graduate to specialized camps for fishing, wilderness survival, even how to tie knots and use knives safely.

West Seattle Art Nest

West SEattle

Dust off (or don’t) your kid’s oldest, rattiest clothes for three-day camps dedicated to abstract art, upcycling, clay, or even glue guns. In 2020, Art Nest moved camps into a big white tent (the kind with lights and heaters that people use for weddings) and kids liked it so much, it’s become a fixture of these hands-on camps.

Kindergarten–School age

Seattle Kids Carpentry

Columbia City

Coding is great, but can it match the satisfaction of wielding your own saw? Half-day camps teach kids woodworking and carpentry skills; everyone comes home with wooden figures—like vehicles or tic-tac-toe sets—that they cut, assembled, and painted themselves.

It’s unclear what sorcery happens after drop-off, but even bike-timid kids end the week here proudly pedaling without training wheels. More advanced levels practice road safety skills and trail riding, and the organization has dozens of camp locations in the area. If only they did driver’s ed, too.

Ages 3 and up

SANCA Circus Camp

Juggling, static trapeze, tumbling, aerial feats, and tightwire walking confer confidence and physical skills—plus they’re really really fun. The School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts divides its camps into three levels, from newbies to experienced circus practitioners who can float through the air with the greatest of ease.

Stone Soup Theatre

Beacon Hill, Wallingford

Kids with an itch to perform will spend a week putting on a play or musical, even working on their improv chops. The camp has two locations—north and south end— and a range of shows for campers of different ages and varying opinions on the dramatic merit of Stephen Sondheim vs. Harry Potter. All rehearsals and activities happen outdoors.

Pinnacle Explorations

Laurelhurst, Madison Valley, Phinney Ridge, View Ridge

Low-key sessions emphasize the outdoors, letting kids dig into gardening or geology, dinos or dragons—even geocaching. Older kids can sign up for a counselor-in-training camp, an investment that could turn the tides of your summer cash flow.

1st–9th grade

Seattle Parks and Recreation

The city-led summer camps open for registration on the later side, in April—depending on your enthusiasm for planning, this can be exciting or frustrating. But the catalog of offerings is as vast and rad as Seattle’s public outdoor spaces, from tide pool camp to Lego builds to comic books, sports, and pottery.

Sail Sand Point

Magnuson Park

Aspiring (and experienced) young sailors spend the week rigging and navigating small single-handed sailing dinghies—and learning all the lingo required to do these things. Older kids can branch off into specialized camps for racing, keelboats, even “sailing into STEM.”

Girls Rock Math

A local powerhouse for girls-only STEAM experiences (with locations allll over town) finds the math that hides in plain sight in crafts, drama, dress-up, magic, even fairy games or storybooks. Middle school–age girls can sign up for leadership roles with younger campers.

1st–8th Grades

Kong Academy

Broadview, Seward Park

Parkour advocates say it supports social-emotional learning. Parents appreciate an outlet for all that energy. Campers report to one of two great local parks (Seward and Carkeek) to spend the day doing a series of “quests.” The Japanese Cultural Center and the International Ninja Research Center ( yes, it’s real ) contributed input to this summer’s theme: ninja adventure.

Avid4 Adventure

Hiking! Kayaking! Rock climbing! Stand-up paddleboards. At the end of this week of outdoor adventures, kids will be ready for a Mountain Dew commercial audition…or at the very least, a chill weekend. Avid4 Adventure transports kids to activities all over the Eastside; signing up for multiple sessions is welcome.

Pre k–7th Grade

creative writing summer camp seattle

Image: Courtesy Arts Aloft

A tiny gem of an art studio organizes its four-day camps into themes that resonate with kids: fairies, ocean explorers, Harry Potter. Kids get gloriously hands-on with their projects, then break for lunch in the park at Madrona Playfield just across the street.

Ages 5.5–12

South Lake Union

Kids spend the week paddling, kayaking, and sailing Lake Union. The busy waterways offer lots to explore, and most kids end up in the lake at some point (usually by choice). The camp now uses a lottery system to deal with its high demand in a more orderly fashion.

Seattle Bouldering Project

Judkins Park, Fremont

A pair of gyms offer legit climbing skills, like safety measures and calculated risk- taking. Doses of games and crafts balance out time on the climbing wall.

Valuable Learning Opportunities

Creative writing allows you to create your own story, characters, and world.  This is your chance to establish your voice, and bring something incredible to life!

Many writers find it best to embrace a creative writing process that allows them to research a topic, outline a storyline, develop characters, set scenes, and much more, all before writing the rough draft!  This will help you flow through your story more easily when writing.

Sharing drafts with the instructor and peers will allow you to garner lots of feedback, and help with the direction of your writing.  Whether it’s curing writer’s block or helping to find a solution or suggestions to develop a character or idea further, the workshop atmosphere provides collaboration that can lead to success!

At the end of camp, we want you to leave with a story you can be proud of.  Hopefully you will learn more about yourself as a person and a writer, and will grow from the experience!

The creative writing atmosphere can be lots of fun, especially when taking a week-long journey with your peers and instructor.  We hope you will find this experience inspirational and make some friends along the way!

Making new friends with similar interests provides a foundation for shared experiences, collaboration and meaningful connections, fostering a sense of camaraderie, togetherness and joy!

Improve Your Skills with Private Instruction!

So many of our campers are passionate about the specialty programs they are participating in and want to further improve and develop the skills taught in camp. Private lessons are a great way to do this!

Private lessons are offered in many of our specialty subjects.  You may book AM lessons from 8:00am to 8:45am and PM lessons from 3:00pm to 3:45pm.

•  Lessons are offered in the subject matter of your child’s camp and tailored to your child’s ability level. •  Private lessons are only offered to campers in attendance during that camp week. •  All lessons should be booked via online enrollment.  Spots are limited!

One-on-one private instruction is an excellent way for campers to learn at their own pace, gain a better understanding and mastery of the skills and subject material, and enhance their experience at camp. Our instructors are friendly and supportive, and understand that every camper learns at their own pace. Our private lessons are designed to be hands-on and very focused, which enables the instructor and camper to concentrate on improving both strengths and weaknesses. Lessons are tailored to the specific camper, and in some instances, campers may use the private lessons to go above and beyond the camp curriculum in an educational and informative manner with the help of the instructor. Private lessons are optional, and are within the subject matter of the camp your child is attending that week.

Private lessons are limited and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis! Campers have the option to purchase more than one private lesson per week, and each lesson builds upon the progress made at camp and in previous lessons.

In addition to being a great supplement to the camp week, private lessons are convenient! Lessons occur either before camp (during Early Arrival) or immediately after camp.

Private lessons can be booked when enrolling for camp, or by contacting our office via email at [email protected]  or by calling one of our camp specialists at  888.854.CAMP (2267) . If you already enrolled and want to add lessons, you can log back into your account and add them at any time, subject to availability.

*The purchase of private lessons is considered camp tuition and falls under the terms & conditions provided on  www.lavnercampsandprograms.com .

Camp Packets includes additional information specific to each location. Packets will include detailed information for your location, week, and courses including drop off/pickup information, what to bring to camp, campus maps and directions, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our camp families ask us many great questions about our summer camps.  Below are a list of questions that are frequently asked.  If you have a question that is not listed, please send it our way!

Question #1:   How much time do campers spend with their course?

Answer:   Campers will spend approximately 22.5-25 hours/week in their chosen course.

Question #2:   What are your staff to camper ratios?

Answer:   We guarantee a max staff-to-camper ratio of 1:4 to 1:8 … or better!   We strive to create a camp environment where campers receive excellent supervision and high levels of attention during instructional periods.

Question #3:   Who are your instructors?

Answer:   Our instructors are the very best out of a large pool of qualified applicants we consider. We hire less than 3% of applicants. Typically, our lead instructors consist of teachers, college professors, undergrad/grad students from top-tier/Ivy League colleges/universities, and the occasional superstar student entering college in the fall. Assistant instructors typically consist of accomplished rising seniors. Our instructors are extremely knowledgeable in the subject area, passionate about working with kids, highly responsible, and all have cleared background checks. Instructors go through a rigorous orientation and training prior to the summer camp season and have constant support from on-site camp directors and our central office. We put them in a position to succeed… and they do!

Question #4:   Do you have an on-site camp director?

Answer:   Yes!   At least one on-site camp director manages Tech Revolution at each location. The director is trained to make sure that daily operations at camp are running smoothly, and is also CPR Certified & First Aid trained. Our camp director is available on site to answer your questions, and is available by phone and email if you need to communicate with him/her during the day.

Question #5:   Do campers usually attend for one week or more than one week?

Answer:   Camper attendance varies.   Most campers attend for multiple weeks, and can move up in curriculum if selecting the same course for more than one week.   All of our courses have multiple levels of curriculum and lots of additional activities and projects for all skill levels.

Question #6:   How do you group the campers at camp?

Answer: Campers are grouped by age and ability. We run multiple levels of curriculum in each camp, allowing for campers to attend camp with us at any time during the summer, even if they are beginners. Our campers can sign up for any week and be placed appropriately in camp. This provides our camp families with maximum flexibility.

Question #7:   Do campers improve at camp?

Answer:   Yes! Campers receive approximately 22.5-25 hours of concentrated time in their camp activity per week. This, combined with our cutting-edge curriculum and high level instructors, allows our campers to improve a lot!  They are also attending with other campers who share similar interests, which fosters learning through peer to peer interaction.

Question #8:   How do you keep camp fun?

Answer:   We hire fun and dynamic instructors! Campers are also selecting subjects that interests them. Numerous breaks are also incorporated throughout the day with opportunities for recreation and socialization. We offer a great balance of indoor and outdoor time, to make sure our campers have a chance to get fresh air, socialize, and play fun sports and games!

Question #9:   How do you create a safe camp environment?

Answer: Camp safety is our #1 goal. We work hard all year long to make sure our camp safety is top notch. We follow extensive guidelines, hire very responsible staff and train them in our procedures and best practices, employ procedures that promote safety and supervision, and are in constant communication. We also implement a behavioral policy that is strict but fair and requires that all campers exude good behavior, do not engage in bullying, and contribute to a safe and welcoming camp environment. Your child is our #1 priority, which means that the safety of our campers is our first concern.

Question #10:    Why should we choose Camp Tech Revolution?
