Film Review: English Vinglish

English Vinglish Still - H 2012

Fans of Indian cinema need no introduction to Sridevi , the star of more than 200 movies: admired for her sparkling comic timing, dancing prowess and acting chops, “Sri” ruled the marquee from the mid-‘70s to the early ‘90s before settling down to raise two daughters with her husband, producer Boney Kapoor .

It took a very special project indeed to lure this very special talent back to the big screen, and English Vinglish is it.

The Bottom Line Indian screen legend Sridevi triumphs in a gentle, but affecting, story of a woman’s awakening self-respect.

Directed and written by Gauri Shinde , the film depicts the transformation of Shashi, a meek, put-upon Indian housewife who speaks only Hindi, into a confident citizen of the world, over the length of a four-week crash course in English.

The Eros release, which enjoyed acclaim (and according to reports, a standing ovation) at the Toronto International Film Festival, is up against strong competition from the satire Oh My God and India’s foreign language Oscar submission, Barfi! , but its universal message — conveyed with wit and heart — is persuasive enough to draw a sizable audience nevertheless. Indeed, a recent San Francisco Bay Area screening found the audience packed with families and young children, a heartening prospect given the film’s positive message encouraging diversity and tolerance.

STORY: India Chooses ‘Barfi!’ for Oscars Foreign-Language Entry

Shashi is a dedicated mother and gifted cook, the wife of a busy executive in the western Indian city of Pune. Her laddoos (a golden, sweet snack ball) earn raves and she even runs a small catering business, but her family treats her like a servant. Her teenaged daughter treats her with contempt, while the casually masked cruelty of her husband’s words ( Adil Hussain ) cut her to the core: “My wife was born to make laddoos!” he gloats.

When Shashi is called upon to fly to New York City — solo — to help her sister arrange a niece’s wedding, she is terrified (look for Amitabh Bachchan in a short, but memorable, scene onboard her flight). Once in New York, the Hindi-speaking Shashi is faced with ever-mounting humiliations, in a series of beautifully mounted, yet squirm-inducing scenes.

It is at this point that Shashi realizes that her lack of English skills is holding her back, and so when she spies an ad for an English class on a passing city bus, she decides to sneak out of her relatives’ house and navigate New York City’s subways and buses to get there.

Her fellow international students include a Pakistani cab driver, a South Indian engineer, a Mexican nanny and a smitten French man ( Mehdi Nabbou ), also a cook, who tastes her laddoos and tells her, “You are an artist.” Shashi retorts, “When a man cooks, it’s an art. When a woman cooks, it’s just her duty.”

It’s no surprise that by the end of the film, Shashi will conquer her fears, but the route Shinde takes to get her there is distinctively Shashi’s. The image of the newly confident Shashi striding down a Manhattan street, a takeout coffee in hand and a trench coat belted over her sari, will make you smile days after you leave the theater.

There is a growing body of work that shows Indian female characters flexing their muscles: Gurinder Chadha ’s Bend It Like Beckham ; Deepa Mehta ’s Water ; the late Jagmohan Mundhra ’s Provoked: A True Story , starring Aishwarya Rai ; and Amol Palekar ’s Anaahat/Eternity , starring Sonali Bendre , spring to mind. And the work of Indian female filmmakers like Chadha, Mehta, Mira Nair and most recently Zoya Akhtar ( Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ) is always worth a look.

With English Vinglish , female director Shinde — known for her documentaries and commercials — brings her own lifetime of experience into the picture. “It is my way of saying ‘Sorry’ and ‘Thank you’ to my mother, and a tribute to women,” Shinde writes in the film’s press notes.

Ultimately, what make English Vinglish memorable are the small, step-by-step choices Shashi makes to transforms herself. Yes, there’s grit there, but it’s tempered with compassion and dignity. The way the character has been crafted by Shinde, and interpreted by Sridevi, is gloriously feminine, and uniquely Indian.

An Analysis of ‘English Vinglish’: Questioning Patriarchal Hegemony from a Feminist Literary Approach

The aim of this research paper is to analyse the movie titled ‘English Vinglish’ from a feminist approach and to question patriarchal and social sides of Indian society's structure through feminist literary theory and its terms.

The feminist literary movement that has been advocated as feminist movement on the parlance of political, social and economic rights, which explains how women can enjoy the power equally with that of men is the question of derived basic social legal rights and the patriarchal order that to be the remaining into a social construct, with the fact that it gets spoken about the masculinity that is desired and enacted whereas in Indian literature, feminism commonly conceived the overtop conception of subtly handling the restricted circumstances. With the advancement of such a strong word accepted in India, setting outside it gives the political and social scenario to have perhaps a massive work that is to be accomplished in Indian literature. The Western education significantly, came up with the advent of the colonialism during the assurance of British Empire, the reformist movement and also the world institutional promotion that the freedom movement began with the postindependence India where education to one was merely not commenced to emerge them as an educated inculcation rather the invent individuality of the aroused interest and today's contemporary Indian English Novelist, and seen having a masses of the theme of feminism and the readers are actually getting them into the education society where womanhood politics along with the gendered complexity being exponential to the connotation of Indian Literature of Feminism.

People belonging to literature have always been an important part of the society and Indian women are not an exception. The Indian literature landscape has never been shaped equally by both genders, with the male perspective dominating. However, women India broke all the barriers and left their mark on Indian literature. The women in India have made notable contribution to literature, and their contribution is well appreciated in all literary circles. Traditionally, the work of Indian Women Writers has been undervalued due to patriarchal assumptions about the superior worth of male. The work of the women writers has not been given its due importance in the past, most probably due to male chauvinism. In the past, the basic subject matter of women writers was the feelings of a woman while she is confined in the walls of a house, while the main authors used to write on vibrant themes. So the work of male authors was able to collect more praise from the reade

Purpose: In this paper, the aim is to examine film form and narrative in relation to gender identity and the politics of representation. Drawing distinctions between these methods make it possible to identify how feminist frameworks are used to examine identity, aesthetics, and ideology through film culture. Approach/Methodology/Design: Thematic analysis, employing a feminist perspective. Three films were selected for conducting this type of analysis: Rakshane Bani-Etemad's 'Nargess', Manijeh Hekmat's 'Women's Prison' and Pouran Derakshande's 'Hush! Girls Don't Scream. Findings: By understanding the representation of women in Iranian Cinema and the cultural/traditional norms and values of the Iranian Society, I argue that the narrative form identifies feminist perspectives, which create an Iranian feminist cinema. Combining textual analysis with a greater concern for the audience-text relationship, and the rejection of the male gaze, these films recognize texts as shaped by the struggle to make meaning amongst institutions which shapes the filmic text from different components of the socio-historical context, and which creates a relationship between feminist film and cultural studies. Practical Implications: Iranian female directors have been adopting a feminist approach in their films' narrative structure dating back to the reformist period of the 90s. Through the social/political context of female characters and the counter-cinematic development of agents, circumstances, and surroundings of the systems of patriarchy and oppression, women directors have been applying feminist narrative form to their work as evident in Rakshane Bani-Etemad's 'Nargess,' Manijeh Hekmat's 'Women's Prison' and Pouran Derakshande's 'Hush! Girls Don't Scream. Originality/value: This paper analyzes the principles of female desire through these selected films, the patriarchal dominance of societal oppression, the female condition, and the examination of violence in the traditions and attitudes related to women while looking at the representation of this violence and oppression in the Iranian Society.

Caste has been an age-old problem in India and other Hindu countries. Caste has established itself through various rituals, food habits, isolation, patriarchy and many other ways. Controlling women, serves as one of keystone component of maintaining the caste system. This research article analyses two Dalit films to understand the component of women and portrayal of feministic characters in one Tamil film (Kabali) and one Marathi film (Sairat). These films have been chosen to understand the discourse of women and to discuss the portrayal and control of women in these films. Semiotic analysis is coupled with semantic and pragmatic analysis to understand the discourse of women. Sairat serves as a film, which portrays women in a comparatively different light from normal stereotypical patriarchal films. Whereas, Kabali despite being a Dalit film falls within the framework of normal Indian film, which offers very little space to women. Dalit literature is the literature of the oppressed. Dalit films are a part of Dalit literature, so they shoulder strong responsibility in proposing counter narratives to stereotypical views of women oppression in the society. Once Dalit narratives are able to break this rigid framework, then they might be able to indirectly attack the evils of caste system, through women empowerment.

Within this complex spectrum of "culture" Indian Literature has represented accurate sufferings of numerous characters. Identity and our skirmish in finding its appropriate nature, has often pressurized the psychic nature of humans, particularly women. To be precise the struggling of marginalized identities is more toilsome in comparison to the "centered" identities. In this phallocentric Indian society, the "white-cis-phallus" is the centre and the remaining becomes the "other". Marginalization can be considered as a chain of events taking place in a society to create certain restrictions for few and power for the rest. Gender, class and caste are further divided into layers, creating a stratified structure where power dynamics moulds and produces identities, not for recognition but for marginalization, oppression. Within this marginalized "remaining" the identity of women and their effort to break the imposed roles of Woman/Wife/Mother is somewhere trapped between the supposed links between "sex" and "gender" which then is to be inherently related and "culturally" bound. Therefore my paper would focus on politicized children"s literature-Brave Rajputs by Anant Pai, and presentation of Tilo in Chitra Banerjee Devakaruni"s The Mistress of Spices, gender-power dynamics in Mahasweta Devi"s Breast Stories, Jhumpa Lahiri"s Lowland, and Khaleid Hosseni"s A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The paper, "Woman in Twenty-First Century Indian Fictions: A Radical Feminist Study of Select Novels", attempts to have a Critique on the representation of women in Indian Fictions of Twenty-First Century women writers. The research focuses on the women characters of various twenty-first century fictions as the zeitgeist or the spirit of the age. The study also features an analysis of select IndianEnglish novels with feminist perspective. The researchers have divided the twenty-firstcentury Indian fiction into three phases based on the representation of women. The issues of womanhood and patriarchal dominance are negotiated, not through real incidents, but through the fictional representation of the real world. Literature is taken as a faithful mirror which represents the issues in the society. The three phases are associated with Raymond Williams' concept of 'residual, emergent and dominant culture. The role of women in the society as victim is discussed and the recent victimhood is also negotiated by the researchers. The three represented phases and their issues are categorized as 'victimization by family', 'victimization by institutions' and eventually, 'victimization by society'.

The present study focuses not only on the struggle of feminist writers to give voice to the problems and issues of woman in Indian society but also on the emergence of the treatment of woman in Indian writing in English in the feminist and post-feminist era. The research work will also reflect the various feminist issues which were raised in the novels of the earlier scribblers like Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan and Mulk Raj Anand but with a difference and counts all the efforts made after the attainment of independence towards highlighting the plight of woman in Indian Fiction by the modern feminist novelists like Anita Desai, Shashi Deshpande, Arundhati Roy and Manju Kapur from equality to the search of identity. Conscious and sustained efforts have been made by innumerable writers in order to sectionalize the dilemma of woman from numerous angels. The earlier scribblers exhibited the traditional image of woman like Sita or Savitri, a gadget or remorse, but afterwards as time changed, the lifelike image of woman, her non-completion and seclusion began to manifest which was dealt very well by the modern Indian post-feminist novelists. The initiation of prodigal English education not only originated verifiable mutation in the middle class walk of life but also propogated a consciousness and the freedom in the psyche of woman. Movie Review: English Vinglish

English Vinglish

English Vinglish Vivek Bhatia, April 20, 2013

  • English Vinglish Movie Review

Director: Gauri Shinde

Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Sulabha Deshpande, Priya Anand and Mehdi Nebbou

The wait has been long but it has been worth its while. After a 15-year long hiatus, Sridevi makes a pleasant comeback at the movies with Gauri Shinde’s directorial debut English Vinglish. After receiving a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival, this charm grenade of a film promises to win hearts at home too. English Vinglish is a shining testament to Sridevi’s inimitable talent and her potential to successfully carry a film to its deserved destination. Meet Shashi (Sridevi), the perfect Indian middle-aged housewife, who knows no better than to keep her family happy. So, while her ever-busy-with-work hubby (Adil Hussain) and mocking daughter Sapna team up to scoff at her broken English, she takes it in her stride and feeds them yummy food instead. She loves cooking; snacks and ladoos to be precise. And packets of delicious food items made by her sell like hot cake in the neighbourhood. Her adorable younger son Sagar and mother-in-law (Sulabha Deshpande) provide her with the occasional but much required comic relief. She flies to The United States of America to help out with her niece’s wedding, two weeks before her family would join her. These two weeks prove to be crucial in Shashi’s life. Circumstances compel her to overcome her insecurities; master the English language and eventually transform into a self assured and confident woman. English Vinglish portrays the most ordinary aspects of life in an extraordinary manner. It explores family values and relationships of a workaholic husband with his wife and that of a mother with her children. May it be the pent up frustration of a housewife, a young daughter grappling with the embarrassment of her mother’s inability to speak proper English or even a husband who believes his wife is only born to make ladoos. Each and every aspect of family dynamics is been handled with utmost care. Sensitivity is the forte of this film and it naturally works wonders. There are few well-written, delicious scenes which you’d wish would never end. Like the scene where Shashi, after befriending her French classmate Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou) at her English class, confides in him about her problems but in Hindi and the guy replies in French. Or the scenes Shashi has with her younger niece (Priya Anand), who becomes her confidante in the US. Or even the story curve that takes place in the English Learning class. It’s all enjoyable and heart-rending. “Your eyes are like two drops of coffee in a cloud of milk,” says a love-struck Laurent to Shashi. And he’s absolutely right. If English Vinglish is a charm grenade then Sridevi is the charm. She puts the act back into acting with her performance as the resilient and compliant Shashi. She conveys the unsaid through her expressive eyes and pulls off an applause-worthy nuanced performance. From rehearsing her answers to questions that will be asked at the US Immigration counter, joining English classes and then eventually being able to make her family proud is a transformation which has been etched out perfectly by her. Subtly performed and duly underplayed this is undoubtedly one of her best performance till date. English Vinglish is almost a masterstroke of a debut for director Gauri Shinde. There is a strong director at work here. The characters are underplayed and so are the emotions. Despite having a few lump-in-your-throat moments, the film doesn’t hold your collar and compel you to shed tears. Instead, it lets you enjoy the feel-good moments at an adequate pace. Well-shot and crisply edited, this film has a fresh feel to it. Also, Amit Trivedi with his hip tunes and modern sound gives a distinct vibe to the film. If one had to necessarily pick out a flaw in the film then it has to be the second half which seemed a tad bit long for its liking. But that’s just nitpicking in a film which is near perfect. Go for English Vinglish with your family vamily. You’ll be charmed varmed, rest assured.

English Vinglish: Where cultures clash with a very dull thud

english vinglish movie review essay

A scene from “English Vinglish”

It's hard to believe that anyone would take for granted the glittering presence of Sridevi, the Indian movie star now making a professional comeback after a 14-year-absence during which she raised her two daughters.

At 49, she can still convincingly play fresh sweetness on screen; off-screen she emits a don't-mess-with-me maturity. But in Bollywood as in Hollywood, your downtrodden heroine can't look too downtrodden.

So the bilingual crossover flick English Vinglish has us believe that Sridevi is Shashi, a conservative Indian mother and housewife whose self-satisfied husband (Adil Hussain) can simply call out "chai, Shashi!" every morning and find his tea at his elbow. He runs some important enterprise that requires him to speak perfect English and allows him to dismiss as a hobby his wife's successful small business selling the Indian pastries called ladoo. Shashi's daughter is no less ungrateful and her mother's non-existent English, the butt of many family jokes, is a particular humiliation to a tween who attends an English-language private school.

So, when Shashi travels to New York ahead of her family to help her sister organize a wedding, she sneaks off to some English classes. There she meets a convenient Frenchman named Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou), whose romantic attentions do as much to reawaken her confidence as her new mastery of English grammar does. There follows a winsome if utterly conventional ugly-duckling story about a sympathetic character's much deserved progress toward a richer self.

The trouble with this scheme is that Shashi is building self-esteem by buying other people's values: Neophyte director Gauri Shinde, who also wrote the script, does include a few boorishly unilingual Americans alongside the helpful ones and lots of rich Indian culture, but in the end, Shashi earns her family's respect by mastering the master's language, knuckling down to the realities of a global culture in which English is the lingua franca.

Similarly, Shashi is not going to teach her husband Satish a lesson by running off with Laurent. The film ends with a wedding – but it is the long-planned nuptials of Shashi's niece, reaffirming the family values that have done Shashi no favours thus far. One wonders how long the neglectful Satish will remember the message of equality and gratitude if it is delivered as gently as this movie does.

CRITICS VERDICT: Sridevi's English Vinglish a must-watch

Sridevi is the hero of the film, the loving mother, yearning wife, earnest student. without being too preachy, or overdramatised, the narrative is perfectly balanced. as writer and director gauri shinde’s first film, english vinglish is remarkable, feel critics..

english vinglish movie review essay

"A star is reborn and one wants to fall in love with her all over again. But despite the temptation, it is eventually too docile an affair to send the heart pounding and the pulse racing. English Vinglish, for all its surface gloss and clean family entertainer aspirations, doesn’t possess that little something needed to turn a one-dimensional account of the makeover of an unassuming homemaker into a convincing, universal drama about a woman’s empowerment, adds Chatterjee.

Sridevi back with a bang

"English Vinglish is unimaginable without Sridevi. Correspondingly, I don't think Sridevi could've got a more cohesive script to return to movies. This is unlike what the actress has done in the past. Think of Sridevi and you recall films Like Himmatwala, Chaalbaaz, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni, Lamhe, Khuda Gawah, Laadla and Judaai. But the supremely talented actress also has non-glam roles like the one in Sadma to her credit. She returns to the big screen in a role that's sans the frills, spectacle and theatrics and yet wins hearts. She's stellar, in terrific form, immersing herself in this character, playing her age… so much so that after a point you forget you're watching someone who has immortalized so many characters. What you carry home, and in your heart, is Shashi, a woman who is snubbed by her children and husband on various occasions for her lack of English-language skills, but overpowers her apprehensions and insecurities and emerges triumphant eventually," says Adarsh.

"After a 15 year hiatus and still remembered fondly for her last powerful performance in Judaai opposite Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, Sridevi ruled the late 80s and early 90s. After watching English Vinglish, you will thoroughly welcome her return. At 49 years Sridevi still has it! Unlike her on and off screen, glamorous avatar, here she is presented as a simple down to earth mother. Her portrayal of Sashi is sensitive and uplifting, with Sridevi really managing to get under the skin of the character. Not once do you associate her with any of her previous roles or persona. As far as comebacks go, in comparison to Madhuri Dixit’s comeback (Aaja Nachle) and Karishma Kapoor (Dangerous Ishhq), this is by far the best comeback vehicle – an author backed role, in a beautifully crafted film, which not only does justice to the actress herself, but also her fans," feels Shabbir.

"Disarmingly charming in a manner that recalls Audrey Hepburn, Sridevi plays Shashi, a thirtysomething Pune wife and mom whose culinary expertise and other homemaking skills are routinely taken for granted by her husband and two children. Worse, her spouse and kids repeatedly tease her about her inability (or unwillingness) to master English, which they see as yet another sign of her tradition-bound mindset," says Leydon.

"There’s a reason why people get nostalgic about the actors of then, and Sridevi, as Shashi, is nothing short of reminding us why. She is the hero of the film, the loving mother, yearning wife, earnest student… you could just wax eloquent about her. There are moments when the trembling meekness gets to you, but they are very rare," says Roshni Devi, Koimoi.com.

Other performances

"French actor Mehdi Nebbou is just right. Even when he's speaking in French, the expression that he conveys says it all and that is the hallmark of a fine actor. However, when he speaks in French, subtitles in English were essential for the viewer to decipher or decode and would have adjoined considerable value to those extremely significant sequences. Amitabh Bachchan is simply fantastic in a cameo. Wish there was more of this legendary actor! Navika Kotia, enacting the role of the daughter, is first-rate, but it is the child actor, Shivansh Kotia, Sridevi's son, who is endearing and steals your heart with his adorable antics. Sulbha Deshpande is admirable," feels Adarsh.

"Sridevi's classmates, each of them, pitch in neat performances. Right from the taxi driver from Pakistan to a South Indian guy to a Mexican nanny and of course, the English teacher, everyone stands out in their respective parts," adds Adarsh.

"The film has a clutch of fine performances. Both Adil Hussain and Mehdi Nebbou, despite their sketchily written roles, are solid. Priya Anand as the niece turns in a noteworthy performance. But it is Sridevi who is obviously the soul of English Vinglish," feels Chatterjee.

Sridevi walks the ramp at DCW

Conclusion "On the whole, English Vinglish is a remarkable motion picture. It's amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message. A must-watch for every parent, every child. Strongly recommended!" says Adarsh. "Overall an extremely praiseworthy film. Excellent performances, especially from Sridevi. A beautifully crafted film. One for the entire family and universal audiences. Easily one of the best films of the year! To the team of English Vinglish: encore, encore!" concludes Shabbir. "Forget comebacks and special appearances, watch this movie for a woman who steps out of her family’s shadow and learns to love herself," concludes Devi. @konkonas: Have to say I'm really looking forward to watching Sridevi in her new film English Vinglish!

My best is yet to come: Sridevi More than 265 films in her oeuvre but Sridevi, the reigning queen of the 1980s and 1990s who is back after a 15-year gap with English Vinglish, says she is yet to deliver her best. The Hawa Hawaii girl, who did scores of films in the south before making her mark in Bollywood.

Amitji's words of appreciation boost confidence: Sridevi Sridevi is overwhelmed after learning about megastar Amitabh Bachchan's words of appreciation for her ready-to-release movie English Vinglish and says they boost her confidence.

Salman Khan cancels shoot for Sridevi Salman Khan doesn’t care much about attending film premieres. But the actor, who’s currently juggling two shoots — one for Bigg Boss Season 6 at ND Studios in Karjat, and the other for Dabangg 2 in Satara — recently chose to make an exception.

RGV can't wait to see Sridevi back on screen Actress Sridevi is making her comeback to cinema with English Vinglish and it's not only her fans who are eagerly waiting for the movie, but also filmmaker Ram Goal Varma.

Sridevi is a master of her craft: Arjun Kapoor Arjun Kapoor is already touted as the next big thing in Bollywood. But when the Ishaqzaade star is not being grilled by scribes to clear the myriad rumours surrounding his films and alleged fights with his contemporaries, he is inevitably questioned about Sridevi, his father Boney Kapoor’s second wife.

Sridevi, Bachchan had a Hawa Hawaii time The Khuda Gawah (1992) couple, Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi, had a musical reunion recently, after nearly 20 years, on the sets of the quiz reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) where the former is the host and the latter was a guest star.

Sridevi wants a red carpet premiere for English Vinglish Her last release was Judaai, back in 1997. Now, 15 years later, as Sridevi returns to Bollywood with English Vinglish, she wants the best possible outing for her comeback movie. No wonder she is insisting on a glitzy premiere for the film despite inhibitions by the makers of the Gauri Shinde-directed venture.

English Vinglish will be a winner: Hrithik Roshan Actor Hrithik Roshan, who had shared screen space with actress Sridevi as a child artist, is full of praises for her comeback film English Vinglish. "I have seen the promos and they look amazing.

A simple Indian woman's complexes are explored with warmth and charm. Sridevi brings to us a home-maker's self-doubt with a wonderful performance despite the squeak in her voice and distracting accent.

Sridevi is back! And I am not even a Sridevi fan, as in back in the days of Madhur Dixit vs. Sridevi , I was clearly in the Madhuri camp. Yet, I am excited to see her back. There is more meaning to these come backs by women leads from 15-20 years ago who took time off for family and now are playing their age. Okay, maybe a little younger, but nevertheless, it is exciting to see them trying stuff different from what they were known for.

English Vinglish is going to take a dab at the importance of the English language in the urban Indian context. It is also using diaspora to accentuate this issue as most of the film is set in New York. It also looks like a tribute to the Indian housewife, who chooses to cater to her family but is looked down upon my most of the people around her. Sure, the condescending attitude of urban India is changing towards her, but it is nowhere close to gone.

All these issues are interesting by themselves and in a way they are related to each other and can form an endearing coming of age story of an Indian housewife finding her way in New York. English Vinglish also seems to have a setting that reminds me of one of my favorite TV shows from when I was growing up – Mind Your Language . The signature tune instantly recalled and very fresh while even thinking about the show. Hopefully, the film will have a decent tribute.

The lines used in the trailers , both tickle and seem insightful. Same goes even for the first look of the film , even though it was a little long. I only hope the film doesn't go all jingoistic on us and stays on neutral, sensible, logical ground.

Meanwhile, Amit Trivedi seems to have again done a decent job of creating entertaining music.

Music Reviews : Milliblog - "Competent vompetent soundtrack from Amit Trivedi ." Music Aloud – "7/10" dunkdaft - "A perfect - verfect soundtrack for the movie" Bollywood Hungama – "3/5" Bollyspice – "3.5/5" Apun Ka Choice - IANS – "3.5/5" glamsham – "3.5/5" Koimoi – "3/5" Bollywood Life – "3/5"

The Indian mom gets her due from Hindi cinema. Finally. No this is not the educated, job-and-home juggler, modern ' aaj ki naari ' (Today's woman). This is the one whose full-time job is to makes homes, the one who is so humble about her 'small' business on the side that the rest of the world is only willing to dismiss her achievements. The woman who has never found expression for her confidence, until one day a slight window of opportunity opens up. English Vinglish takes this opportunity and ever-so gradually talks to us, her family, about our responsibility to empower her. While doing so it keeps the atmosphere light and lets you spend 5 weeks with Shashi ( Sridevi ) and her gorgeous homeliness.

Yes, I saw my mom, my nani (grandmom), my aunt, my cousin and countless other enterprising women in Shashi - warm, modest, coy, technically uneducated but sharp women. She is underexposed to the world outside and yet has a mind so broad, and an attitude so simple and clear that it would make some of the urban seen-the-world, know-it-all snots ashamed of their chauvinism. She is put down by those closest to her and that affects her more than the deep love and support that others might offer. Her pride is hurt and you see her swallow her hurt and even take blame to keep harmony. She beats herself up, for not having stuck to her "should haves", before anyone else could get a chance. And yet given a chance, this meek, submissive lady can fly high if she somehow manages to find freedom.

If guys out there think this a women's film because it sounds all touchy-mushy. You might want to watch it so you can empower the women in your life and see your world from their eyes.

Sridevi brings out complexities within the life of a simple Indian woman with grace and elegance. Even if it were for a total of just 30 seconds, her dance is much more graceful than many of today's top actresses put together. Sure, her squeaky voice is distracting enough to make you wonder if Urmila Matondkar has dubbed for her in a not-so Marathi lilt in her Hindi. The constant stutter/hesitation and lack of confidence her character demands can seem a little repetitive. But her gorgeous eyes make up for that. And I just don't mean their shape or the way they are made up, but what they convey, the emotions they stir within. I don't know whether to thank her or be disappointed that she has made the typical housewife, larger than life.

I doubt she could achieve any of this if she weren't provided with material to play with. Quite a few parts of this simple story manage to convey a lot about the relationships and their dynamics even though only a few minutes are spent on them in terms of time. I especially enjoyed Shashi's relationship with her son and the character of her spirited mother-in-law.

On the other hand, the gay effeminate character is caricaturish and the charming, romantic French man is too good to be true. But, if that's what it takes to balance it off with a positive attitude towards sexual orientation and subtle, cross-border love, so be it. The other characters like say her husband and daughter were the stereotypical male chauvinist and ruthless teenager. However, we do have to realize that these stereotypes do find their place in every other household with some or the other variation. And some of them don't necessarily have an instant change of outlook within 5 minutes.

I loved the pace at which English Vinglish goes about it's business. No rush, no great strides to cover lots of ground. In fact, at half-time, all you've seen is whatever you know from the trailers in terms of plot. Shashi Godbole is being put down for not knowing English. And you wonder how they are going to close all the threads in just over an hour. Yet, you haven't gotten bored.

Even in it's entirety the plot has just the slightest curve in its arc. I'd have liked it better if I didn't know some of the punch lines from the trailers or they had a few more of them. Also, another slight sore point is that it does tend to get a little preachy, even as it gets masked under conversations and real-life speech situations. I also wonder how it'd have been to see Shashi do what she does while living in India, without using the American 'support' system as an anchor.

With that we come to the question of the importance given to the English language in English Vinglish . On the one hand, I could get distracted by the supposed moral of the story, and the overt emphasis on the language. Because, surely an Indian home-maker in Pune, can get by without HAVING to know English and she won't lose much face either. The exaggeration is made to make a point. But Shashi's need to learn English is my mom's want to learn driving is my grandmom's drive to learn how to play the harmonium at age 75! It's not about the English or the car or the musical instrument. It's about confidence, it's about independence, it's because they didn't get to do it then, it's about being proud of yourself and finding self-worth, it's about feeling good about yourself.

And for the rest of us, it's about giving them space to do so.

Plot Summary

Mrs. Shashi Godbole ( Sridevi ), mother of two, maker and seller of snack items, finds herself ridiculed and thus inferior. She lands up in New York and now HAS to learn English.

What Worked

  • Amitabh Bachchan 's cameo. Sweet. Despite the over-acting, I had a good laugh! Ang good to see a co-star from yesteryears lending support while easily slipping into the shoes of a co-passenger.
  • The Michael Jackson dance.
  • That Shashi is not a nag and is pretty cool and accepting from the beginning.
  • The French man and his dreamy eyes!
  • That Shashi doesn't need only intermittent love.
  • That Shashi doesn't even consider what she'd like for herself, she doesn't give herself a choice at many times even though there might be one.
  • That Shashi lies even though she doesn't need to, just because the default for her has been that people will laugh at her.
  • The emphasis for need of equality in a marriage – not only conceptually but in reality.

What did not

  • What Amitabh Bachchan 's character arrogantly tells the American immigration officer. I doubt anyone would get by with that one while entering a country. But hey, it did get those few laughs from the audience. This is what I meant by jingoism .
  • The Manhattan translation is silly!
  • The way New York is covered – pretty ordinary.
  • The focus on the brand name when the brand name occurs in the Manhattan song – quite unimaginative.
  • The use of handheld camera got a bit annoying.
  • The highlight on Shashi's "good question". It was a good question alright, but the highlight looked like the writer was patting her own back for coming up with it.
  • Shashi's nieces who have grown up in the US don't have an accent while speaking Hindi.
  • Shashi's attitude towards her daughter. Though focusing on that would have to be a different film altogether.
  • The dramatization of the laddu scene in the end.

Nitty-Gritty

  • Shashi sleeps in a sari, really? Maybe...but difficult to digest given her socia-economic strata that she wouldn't own a night gown! This is an example of what I mean by exaggeration of the situation in this film .
  • It looked like Shashi traveled to New York in business class and the family flew back in economy. That's an awfully nice husband. I judge the business class based on the glass glass, the wine, etc.
  • Sridevi 's saris are simple and so gorgeous. For once, I didn't mind that a regular at-most upper middle class character carried enough saris to not repeat a single one in her 5-week stay in New York.

Parental Guidance:

  • Violence : None.
  • Language : Clean.
  • Nudity & Sexual content : None.
  • Concept : The empowerment that an Indian housewife needs in trying to fit in with the demands of the world around her.
  • General Look and Feel : It's bright and live.

Have to absolutely watch it, if only to see my favorite actor make a comeback to the big screen. That it is a good movie is such a sweet bonus.

Simple movie. Good Clean Entertainment. Too sweet to miss !

Amazingly reviewed... I absolutely loved the film... English Vinglish is an honest effort beautifully executed. It casts a spell on you right at its outset and charms you through to the end, walking you through every emotion - love, hatred, happiness, sadness, fear, anger, aggression, submission. It isn't quite the script but the execution that's makes all the difference!

@EatPrayLoveMovies Thank you!! It's best when it comes from deep within, the film or the review :)

I wasn't spell bound by it, but I can so imagine it happening to fortunate ones for whom Sridevi's voice and dialogue delivery isn't a distraction. And like you said, it's ultimately about how it's told.

Another flick with great soul.Indian film industry is truly on a roll in it's centenary year.Despite slow pacing, the well crafted narrative makes up for everything.Though the story is build upon linguistic skills but the underlying theme would find connect with every household in our country-urban or small towns.Meetu,as you rightly pointed out, sridevi makes up for all stutter overdo with her expressions.I have never been her fan but she did give me goosebumps this time. All you English pichhar walas,we do have our rajnikanth to pull off the chaddis of all your supermaans..

idlebrain jeevi says:: If you are a kind of guy who like films like Cheeni Kum and Paa, you will end up loving English Vinglish. A homemaker is the most neglected person in Indian scenario. This film is about how a homemaker proves her mettle and creates a sense of pride and self-esteem for herself. At the same time, she doesn=E2=80=99t hurt the system and people around her. On a whole, English Vinglish is a sweet, progressive and an entertaining film. A must watch!!!

The 4th film i need to catch up with after GOW,Barfi and OMG!! 2012's really giving us some small scale gems....A very Happy Centenary indeed!

@Anuj Hope the trend continues :)

I liked it. Amazing! Watched it at Wave Cinemas. Shinde has really proved herself. Amazingly nice. Sridevi's selection has been superb!

Finally watched this film, I would rank it as one of the best Hindi films this year (might even be the best). It tells us a story that all of us are familiar with, because we have seen similar tales unfolding in our very homes. Some of us might even have been that teenager who were uncomfortable with their mom's English knowledge (though not necessarily at that age, maybe when we were younger) or made fun of mom's pronunciations. Did we for a moment stop and think how she would feel about it? Probably not.

This film might make us think, it certainly did that for me.

@Rahul Saw it again a week or so ago with my kids at home on TV. It was quality time, alright :)

English Vinglish Review

English Vinglish is Sridevi’s comeback film after a 15 year sabbatical. Known for her outstanding performances in films like Chalbaaz, Mr India, Lamhe and many more, Sridevi returns with a film directed by debutante Gauri Shinde, wife of producer R Balki (Paa, Cheeni Kum).

Several popular yesteryear actresses have tried, without much success – Madhuri Dixit failed with Aaja Nachle and Karishma Kapoor returned with one of 2012’s biggest duds Dangerous Ishq. Can Sridevi make a successful comeback?

English Vinglish is about an Indian housewife and her quest to learn English. Shashi (Sridevi) travels to the United States Of America, and finds it extremely difficult to communicate – on the flight, with the airport officials, coffee shops, trains, everywhere. Her husband and children mock her for her inability to understand English. Shashi then decides to join a 4 week English learning course and makes new friends from different cultures and countries.

There are several scenes in the film that deserve a mention. The New York cafe scene, where Shashi is humiliated (hard to imagine any other actor pulling off). The entertaining sequences in the English classroom. And finally, Shashi’s speech in the climax, that was received with thunderous applause in the movie hall.

The film is slightly slow pace, especially in the second half where it tends to drag a bit.Music by Amit Trivedi blends beautifully into the film. Laxman Utekers cinematography is good.

Moving on to the performances, English Vinglish is Sridevi’s show all the way. Her screen presence, charm and acting skills are intact. Her voice and trembling hands can sometimes be distracting.Adil Hussain, who plays Shashi’s husband, is good. Priya Anand as her niece looks pretty and acts well. Amitabh Bachchan makes a special appearance and leaves a mark. The rest, including the french actor, do well.

Overall, English Vinglish is a fine film with a good story and fabulous performances. A film that can be watched and enjoyed with your entire family. Go for it.

As expected, good reviews all over. I anticipated this with the trailer. Waiting to watch the movie.

I love Sridevi. This movie should have opened in much better number. But eventually it will become a HIT.good luck SRI……

indicine wonderful review, and i think her voice helps to make the character look real, inconfident, anxious, stammering, i loved it. i pray to god it picks up quickly, to me sridevi was the only hero of 80s, first female superstar.

Awesome-Vawsome. Trade report is also encouraging now that the film has picked up and will grow big over the weekend. Sridevi is truly back with a bang.

i dont believe the film is that good sridevi was always overated as an actress she just to act squeeky and bubly all the time witha squeekish voice .. i think her voice had a minor tremor and her dialect was always south indian .. that she is a mature woman is allright!! but her podgy balding producer husabnd thinks she is still heroine material ..with liposuction done on her cheeks she looks sunken and not stunning ..she had a funny lower chin which used to protrude ahead of her front teeth which was her trademark .. no sir this film sucks big time and we dont want to see her back and competing what mads and lolo could not do she certainly cant ..lets hope this one flops cos it is made by south indians which we so much hate

Watched Yesterday…… Best Screenplay of this year till now………. Whats say INDICINE??????

anyone who is complaining about sridevi have not seen ev, just watch how she portrays hundreds of emotion so naturally and beautifully that you feel for shashi, not only she has had acclaim in india but globally it was given brilliant reviews in toronto’s film festival, a lot even dubbed her meryl steep of india, and u will know why.

Khalid Mohammed on Sridevi

“Sridevi’s acting is competent, far superior to the supposed acting calibre of todays leading ladies”

“Ms Sridevis wrap-up speech is so wonderfully delivered that youre even willing to forgive the screenplay and Shindes montage-addicted direction, all their countless trespasses”

“And its not just nostalgia and the goodwill which Sridevi continues to command in the movie lovers heart, see her any which way, shes first-rate. The rest of English Vinglish isnt. Its just about okay vokay”

for some reasons I couldn’t still go to cinema and see it.. can’t wait.. I must watch it this week.. am sure it’s excellent

Only have to see sridevi’s acting in the cafe where she expresses embarrassment, they way she did that scene it’s so real, you laugh with her as well as feel and cry for her at the same time, the speech at the climax was so well delivered, her expressions just change so quickly, the part in the plane with bigb, when she drinks that wine, just see hereye movement, most actresses can give best 2 or 3 expressions, sri is just in the league of her own, mryl steep of India. her character reminded me so much of my mother who have similar problems. people are missing out on something very special.

I love srk and his face

And i love salman fans lnd all has monster lnd like salman and i suck all salman fans lnd.because srk and we fans of srk have no lnd.

Srk is not a king he is the king of king and bhai of bhai

Warning to the salman fans don’t compare with srk srk giving highest number of hits and salman is a fat men and mr.flopstar

why are talks of srk, salman here, this is about english vinglish and sridevi, sridevi is far great than those 2 clowns. that also includes my fave actor akki.

But salman king give highest all time blockbusters, and blockbuster also he is india,s and world,s 7th most handsome man so compare of salman with srk is like compare of man with animal.

Loooovvvvveeee u sridevi geeeee

if indicine recommended it thats it will obviously worth to watch…………………….

I can see some of the biggest losers in this forum who are diverting the topic…

if only she didnt have a pakoda nose i would see it

Amazing film, I saw it today at cinema, wonderful, funny, and it deserves 5/5, not only 4 stars Indicine. I enjoyed every minutes of this film.

Sridevi deserves to win best actress award for this film.. loved her acting.

Gauri, R Balki’s wife directed this film, similar to her husbands’ direction.. God bless R Balkis, both r super directors!

outstanding movie

Indicine, you haven’t mentioned much about Mehdi Nebbou-the French actor in your review. Just a half of a sentence is not enough about him. He was fabulous in the movie. His facial expressions, body language were awesome. I agree it’s Sri Devi’s show all over, but this guy is worth mentioning. I really liked the way he praised Shashi in the English Class when David sir asked about what he likes about the class. That is one of my favourite scenes in the movie.

trembling hands makes it look so real, something many would face if they are anxious in circumstances shashi faces, it used to be said that sridevi acts with her whole body, which is not something that comes often but only once in a long time.

LIFE LESSONS FROM THE MOVIE ENGLISH VINGLISH

We’re past that time when movies were only made you feel good. You sat through a film, had a smile on your face and came out sulked in the human emotions that you were able to identify yourself with. We don’t make those kind of movies anymore, the movies that you’d probably watch when you’re feeling low.

10 years ago, in 2021 Gauri Shinde directed a beautiful movie English Vinglish. This was a tale of a simple housewife who is often ridiculed by her daughter for not acing the English language. Her husband also doesn’t talk to her much. This is a story of achievement and realization both.

The film is so real, so mesmerizing and so heart wrenching that we still can’t escape its delightfulness can we?

Here are 5 lessons the movie English Vinglish has taught

english vinglish movie review essay

This was the primary message imparted by English Vinglish. Many people judge someone’s whole personality by the way he/she speaks English. That’s wrong in every way. A scholar in Hindi or Sanskrit or Spanish is maybe more intelligent than the one who speaks English. English is just another language like any other language and there is no point in taking pride in that.

english vinglish movie review essay

In one of the most touching moments in the movies, Shashi says that when you stop loving yourself your life becomes dull. The moment you learn to love yourself, your old life seems new. This is a precious life lesson that everyone should learn from English Vinglish. If you don’t love yourself, you also cannot love others.

english vinglish movie review essay

Whatever you want in life, you can always achieve that. All you need is tremendous will-power. Shashi was a shy and docile housewife in Pune who was running a small business. New York is a big city and she could not speak English fluently but that didn’t stop her from doing something vastly different there. She went to the English Speaking Institute all by herself riding the metro rail, walking on unknown streets, asking strangers about the address, etc.

english vinglish movie review essay

Many people struggle to figure out their passion. Consider yourself lucky if you know where your heart lies. Once you know your passion – never give up or compromise on that. Because that’s the  real You.  It would have been very easy for Shashi to order those  MotichoorLaddoos  from an Indian sweet shop. But she promised her niece – Meera that she will prepare her special  MotichoorLaddoos  at her wedding. That’s why she missed her final English Test that day and went ahead to make laddoos as those laddoos were spoilt accidentally.

english vinglish movie review essay

Shashi was lightly and sometimes heavily disrespected by her daughter Sapna and husband Satish. But she used those harsh words to improve her communication powers in the English language. Knowing an alien language and excelling in that requires a lot of strength and she did that to better herself. In the future, this  improved You  will only pave new ways for you.

Do let me know your thoughts on this movie.

Dear Keen Writer, I love this movie. I also feel Shaashi shows a lot of personal integrity in politely refusing the love interest of her classmate who clearly valued her more than her husband. I personally love the scene of in-flight film dialogue translation as well as the scenes of English tutorial. Do write about more feel-good movies. Much love!

Dear Harshi,

I’m glad we’re on the same page. Yes will write about more feel good movies.

english vinglish movie review essay

Star cast:  Sridevi, Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand, Sulbha Deshpande, Sujata Kumar, Shivansh Kotia, Navika Kotia, Adil Hussain, Cory Hibbs, Amitabh Bachchan (special appearance).

What’s Good: The nuanced screenplay and cinematography; the effortless direction; the touching performances; the music.

What’s Bad: Some characterizations; tries a bit hard to get emotional; the slow pace.

Loo Break: Not really.

Watch or Not?:  This light-hearted movie is a lovable watch for Sridevi, the direction and the music, though the forced emotional quotient might get to you.

Towards the climax of English Vinglish you’re expecting Sridevi’s big English. Instead of crescendo music or an erudite theatrical of the Queen’s language, Sridevi pips up with a soft but firm, “May I?” There’s something so nuanced about this moment that you can’t help but applaud for those two words though they’re not the typical claptraps.

Laddoos are how Shashi’s (Sridevi) husband knows her. Her daughter remembers her to hunt down missing scrapbooks and the son wails for her when he gets hurt. Shashi runs a little catering business from her home but when it comes to English skills, let’s just say that the laddoo crumbles. Shashi’s daughter is embarrassed to take her for PTA meetings and sniggers at her mom’s language behind her back (with her father in tow). As if that isn’t bad enough, Shashi now has to stay in the US for 5 weeks to help her sister plan for her niece’s wedding.

After an unnerving experience at a café, Shashi decides to sign up for English tutorials without informing her sister and family. It’s almost a double-life for Shashi – with her judgmental family on one side and her classmates who like and respect her (one of them, Laurent, even has a huge crush on her) on the other. And she has her cute niece (Priya Anand) to help and cover up for her.

But how will Shashi continue her classes once her husband and children join her in the US? And where does this crush lead to? Does Shashi conquer the English language?

English Vinglish Review

English Vinglish Review: Script Analysis

There was always the danger of an Indian learning English turning into another Zabaan Sambhaal Ke . But not with Gauri Shinde. Kudos to her for writing such a fine story and raising the movie to such poetry on screen. Instead of dialogue after sobbing dialogue, you see Shashi run behind her husband with a water bottle, close the fridge after him: you don’t need a voiceover or dialogue reinforcing her status here. And no, she’s not rescuing her wayward niece from rape or teaching her conniving in-laws a lesson to prove herself. The dialogues are very good though Sridevi can go into preach-mode at times.

The first half of the movie could have been a bit faster. Considering how meek Shashi is shown to be, her going out to find the English class across town all on her own is far-fetched. Once she has been established as the disregarded housewife, adding further to it just seems like trying to milk the audience’s tears. Shashi’s husband and children have not been characterized well (heartless mostly).

English Vinglish Review: Star Performances

There’s a reason why people get nostalgic about the actors of then, and Sridevi, as Shashi, is nothing short of reminding us why. She is the hero of the film, the loving mother, yearning wife, earnest student… you could just wax eloquent about her. There are moments when the trembling meekness gets to you, but they are very rare.

You could just stare at Mehdi Nebbou as Laurent while he tries to woo Shashi. Priya Anand is lovely as Shashi’s supportive niece. Sulbha Deshpande (as Shashi’s mother-in-law), Sujata Kumar (as Shashi’s sister) and Shivansh Kotia (as Shashi’s son) suit their roles to the T. Navika Kotia does fine as Shashi’s daughter but she appears too spoilt as is Adil Hussain as Shashi’s husband. Cory Hibbs shines as Shashi’s chirpy English teacher David Fischer. Amitabh Bachchan’s special appearance tips a bit to the annoying side between cute and over-the-top.

English Vinglish Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Gauri Shinde makes a fabulous debut as director. Amit Trivedi’s music is really good, especially the Navrai Majhi (excellent timing, especially when Shashi introduces her classmates) and title tracks. Editor Hemanti Sarkar has done an apt job. Laxman Utekar’s cinematography gives you such wonderful scenes. The script, the performances, the cinematography, music sync gorgeously on screen.

English Vinglish Review: The Last Word

Forget comebacks and special appearances, watch this movie for a woman who steps out of her family’s shadow and learns to love herself.

Commenting on the performances, the reviewer says, “Navika Kotia does fine as Shashi’s daughter but she appears too spoilt as is Adil Hussain as Shashi’s husband.”

Is that really a comment on their acting skills? Isn’t it how their characters are written out to be? – of a spoilt brat and a thankless husband?

The first review that has a negative streak to it, go and learn about cinema first miss Roshni Devi, What have u studied some filmmaking or you are some acting coach.

Just because Taran gave it 4 stars you in order to be different came up with this crap.

Not everyone can be wrong and you alone right. Well October 5 will prove you wrong, InshaAllah.

Your review seems like a forced one too, since its obvious u r highlighting minor shortcomings of the movie. Not a completely honest review. Shame !

‘English Vinglish’ movie review, synopsis, cast, crew and ratings

Are you looking for the movie review of ‘English Vinglish’? This film ‘English Vinglish’ is a welcome back movie for Indian actress Sridevi with co-stars Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou and Priya Anand. The film aims to prove the importance of English both in formal and informal basis in the present era. This article provides a detailed review of the movie review of English-Vinglish with its synopsis, cast, crew and ratings. I hope you enjoy it all.

Introduction Director : Gauri Shinde Cast : Amitabh Bacchan, Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou and Priya Anand. Country of origin : India Language used : Hindi Ratings : 4/5 This film is a Bollywood comeback for Sridevi after 15 years. The movie is purely based on an Indian housewife's struggle in the modern English speaking world where she takes the pain almost each and every second she tries to adapt herself to the present standard of living. Story of the movie As I said, the story of 'English-Vinglish' is about the stress and strain which the common Indian housewives face now-a-days. In the movie, Sashi (Sridevi) is the house wife who feels completely lonely and isolated because of her language problems. As you see the name of the movie' "English-Vinglish", it is purely about linguistic handicaps. Her husband (Adil Hussain) is always beside her but Sashi faces almost all major hurdles that include English speaking like a guardian-teacher meeting, an international travel or even a visa interview. Gauri Shinde, who made her directorial debut in this film, has tried every bit to show and prove how fatal and daunting these tasks can be on the part of a common Indian wife. Similar problem are also faced while ordering even a pizza or sandwich in the English speaking countries like the UK or USA. The film takes an interesting turn when Big B Amitabh Bacchan makes his entry into the screen. Though he has a small cameo in the movie as a co-passenger, still he leaves an unforgettable impact. While Sashi is struggling with her English, it's he, Mehdi Nebbou (Laurent) and Sashi's niece (Priya Anand) who realize the obligation and weakness of Sashi and come forward to help her in whatever way they can. The key roles of the movie And of course, the best key role is played by Sridevi as Sashi in this movie. Gauri Shinde has done everything that perfectly exploits Sridevi's crafts to deliver best shots with full poise and aplomb. If you watch the movie, you will fully agree with me that she has characterized herself as typical Indian housewife in this film. Especially, when she quietly rushes for her English class in the film, her body language and movements are perfectly delivered in the context of the film. The best thing about her lead role in this movie is that she has not tried to do anything extravagant or show off to promote her shots. Her shots are firmly basic and make the scenes convey the aimed message to its viewers. Apart from her main role, other supportive key roles of "English-Vinglish" are played by Adil Hussain, Amitabh Bacchan, Priya Anand and Mehdi Nebbou. Conclusion The premier show of "English-Vinglish" has received a standing ovation at the Toronto film festival. And this is no surprise at all. Director Gauri Shinde has created the specialized characters who will be remembered for a long time although they have very short duration to play in the file. The most educative part of the film is the spoken English class which motivates the society about the necessity of learning English in the present day world and the scene includes some funny dialogues too to get amused. It is indeed a brilliant achievement for an actress of 40+ ages to have come up with so much maturity in her performance. Especially, when you have to play the lead role in a film, it is more than a tough ask but Sridevi has done it. She stands tall with her assignment and the co-stars have delivered the perfect supportive shots to her too. After having gone through each and every aspect in the film, I will rate this film with 4 out of the five stars. A film that conveys education, social obligation, family management and the way to improve English. Simply magnificent!
