Engaging Students in Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: A Brief Review of the Literature

Problem solving and critical thinking skills are beneficial across all fields of collegiate studies and provide lasting value in the workplace and everyday life. In problem solving, students employ critical thinking skills in the analyses of problems and the synthesis and applications of previously learned concepts. For decades, researchers and academics have deliberated on ways to engage students in the classroom to train them in these skills. The collective research on teaching critical thinking and problem solving reveal overarching themes, which include student involvement, learning styles, student motivation, and instructor perceptions and behaviors.

Aspects of Free Market Economy & Autonomy in Applied Philosophy

The aim of the course is to engage students in a wide variety of activities and experiences that will assist in the development of critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills. Through exposure to a wide range of historical perspectives across different domains of knowledge (including History, Science, Art, Ethics, Psychology and Literature) and the opportunity to discuss problems and scenarios from everyday life, students will develop a deeper understanding of their personal values and the perspectives of others. This course aims to develop students into inquirers with a critical disposition and a thirst for knowledge.

INQUIRY AS A KEY TO DEEPER LEARNING

In spite of the fact that critical thinking is a vital skill not only during studying at university but in everyday life either, students are often unprepared for critically thinking when they start their studies. That is why it is so necessary to explain how to use practical strategies for developing these skills for a successful academic life. First of all, teachers should always bear in mind Bloom’s Taxonomy as it helps them to find the correct way for teaching showing the nearest and the furthest goals in their work. The levels start from the simplest and go to the most complicated ones showing that no one can acquire a higher level without mastering the lower ones and that their acquiring is necessary for bringing up critically thinking students. Creating a culture of inquiry is constant work which grows problem-solving learners with deeper understanding of important knowledge. Being convinced that a significant tool for creating a culture of inquiry is essential questions that drive and motivate learning, the authors have designed some recommendations that can encourage inquiry-based learning process and involve students in it. As inquiry-based learning elevates students’ autonomy and collaboration, and helps to create a culture focused on researching rather than reproducing information, the authors consider that teachers should focus on question formulation technique. Besides, four phases of inquiry-based learning have been distinguished and described in details.

Problem-based Learning: Nursing students’ attitude, self-reported competence, tutorial performance and self-directed learning readiness

Background and objectives: Problem-based learning (PBL) is widely recognized as progressive pedagogy for the preparation of a range of health professionals. Despite the prominence of PBL in contemporary discussions about the education of future health professionals, its value is increasingly being contested in light of shrinking resources and increasing student enrolments in universities. The objectives were to ascertain Bachelor of Nursing (BN) students’ attitude towards the value of PBL as a learning strategy; to determine BN students’ degree of certainty about their competence in PBL processes; to determine whether student performance in PBL tutorials improve over four years of study; and to compare the self-directed learning readiness of PBL students to those who are not exposed to PBL.Methods: The study followed a descriptive and comparative survey design to collect the data. Participants were BN students who were invited to participate in the descriptive survey (n = 92), and purposively selected (n = 159) for comparison between PBL (n = 54) and non-PBL (n = 105) groups. Results: The majority of students found PBL a stimulating (59.8%; n = 55), useful (65.2%; n = 60), empowering (70.6%; n = 65) and enlightening (60.8%; n = 56) learning strategy; most students (53.2%; n = 49) expressed certainty about their competence in “accessing relevant literature/evidence” but more (56.3%; n = 52) were less certain about their ability to “integrate information into nursing care”. First year students performed poorly in PBL tutorials but showed a significant improvement in the final year of study in problem-solving (p = .0001), contribution to the group (p = .000), communication (p = .000), critical thinking (p = .001), learning skills (p = .001), personal growth (p = .000) and leadership skills (p = .041). There was no significant difference between PBL and non-PBL students’ overall readiness for self-directed learning (p = .69).Conclusions: The findings suggest that BN students generally have a positive attitude towards PBL, finding it stimulating, useful, empowering and enlightening in a transformative learning environment. However, fewer students feel that they are competent in the majority of the PBL processes. The biggest learning gains for students during PBL tutorials are in problem-solving, contributions to the group, communication, learning skills, critical thinking, personal growth and leadership. PBL and non-PBL students are similar in their self-directed learning readiness regardless of the learning strategy used.

Problem based learning (PBL) in Organic Chemistry

Background: PBL appears to answer many concerns regarding educational methods, encourages students to look for new solutions to relevant problems using available knowledge and resources. The process expands students' critical thinking and problem solving skills while enhancing their creative capabilities Objective: To develop a PBL modules for teaching of organic chemistry. Methods: This module was developed for implementation in the curriculum of Chemistry Departments in Colleges of Sciences and Education. This is an innovations to be developed for increasing the wide-ranging abilities of students. A series of strategies which are involved in PBL, concept mapping and online communications, are suggested and discussed in terms of encouraging student-centered learning.

Every day, we use math when we spend or save money. Whether buying a candy bar or saving for a new toy, we need to know how much things cost. We add up prices and make sure we get the right change back. Without math, it would be hard to use money wisely.

Time Management

Math helps us manage our time. We look at the clock to decide when to wake up, go to school, or watch our favorite show. Schedules are all about numbers. We divide our day into hours and minutes to keep everything on track.

Cooking and Baking

When we cook, we use math to measure ingredients. A recipe might need 2 cups of flour or 1 teaspoon of salt. If we want to make more or less food, we have to adjust the numbers correctly. Math makes sure our food tastes good.

Playing Sports

Playing sports often involves math. We keep score, count points, and calculate distances when we play games like basketball or soccer. Knowing how many points we need to win can make the game more exciting.

Travel and Navigation

If we travel, math helps us figure out how far we’re going and how long it will take. When we follow a map, we’re using math to find the best route. Even the GPS in cars uses math to help us get to our destination.

250 Words Essay on Mathematics In Daily Life

Math and shopping.

When we go shopping, math is our silent helper. We use it to check if we have enough money to buy things. We also compare prices and figure out discounts. If something costs $50 and there’s a 10% off sale, we need to calculate how much we save. That’s math too!

Cooking with Numbers

Cooking is like a tasty math problem. We measure ingredients, like cups of flour or teaspoons of sugar. If we’re making half a recipe, we need to divide the amounts. And cooking time is all about numbers. If a cake bakes for 30 minutes, we set a timer so we don’t forget.

Our day is full of schedules. We wake up at a certain time, go to school, and have classes that start and end at specific times. Planning our day means we’re using math to understand and manage time.

In sports, scores tell us who’s winning. And angles are everywhere! When kicking a soccer ball or shooting a basketball, the way we angle our foot or hand can make a big difference. That’s math in action.

Travel and Math

When we travel, we use math to plan the trip. We need to know how far we’re going and how long it will take. If we’re driving, we calculate how much gas we’ll need. All this planning involves math.

In short, math is not just in our textbooks. It’s a part of everything we do. From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, math is there, making our lives easier and helping us solve everyday problems.

500 Words Essay on Mathematics In Daily Life

Mathematics: everywhere in our lives.

Math is not just a subject we study in school; it is a vital part of our everyday lives. From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, math is there, even if we don’t always see it. In this essay, we will explore how math shows up in different parts of our day-to-day activities.

Shopping and Budgeting

Think about when you go to the store with your parents to buy groceries. The prices of items, the total bill, and the change you get back – all involve math. When your family plans how much money to spend on food, clothes, or games, they are using a budget. A budget is a plan for how to spend money, and making one requires adding and subtracting to make sure you don’t spend more than you have.

If you have ever helped out in the kitchen, you have used math. Recipes need measurements like cups and teaspoons. If you want to make more or less of something, you need to multiply or divide those measurements. For example, if a cake recipe is for 4 people but you have 8 guests, you need to double the amounts. That’s math!

We use math to manage our time without even thinking about it. When you plan your day, you decide how many hours you will spend on school, homework, playing, and sleeping. If you have two hours to play and you want to play two games, you have to figure out how long you can spend on each game. This is dividing time, which is a math skill.

Sports and Games

If you play sports, you keep track of scores and points, which is math. Understanding how many points you need to win or how your team is doing in a tournament involves adding and subtracting. Even board games and video games often require players to count spaces, collect points, or manage resources.

When you go on a trip, math helps you get where you’re going. If you’re driving, you need to know how far you’re going and how long it will take. This involves math calculations like speed and distance. Reading maps and using GPS devices also require understanding scales and coordinates, which are math concepts.

Building and Creating

If you like to build models or create crafts, you are using math. You measure materials to make sure they fit together. When you draw or design something, you use shapes and symmetry, which are part of geometry, a branch of math.

Math is not just about numbers and equations we learn in school. It is a tool that helps us with everyday tasks. From managing money to playing games and cooking, math is a part of what we do and how we solve problems. Next time you do something routine, take a moment to see how math is helping you. You might be surprised at how often you use it without even realizing it.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

essay on application of mathematics in daily life

The Importance of Mathematics in Everyday Life

How it works

Math, as we know it, is a discipline that everyone needs in our day-to-day lives. Without it, the world would be a dangerous place to live. Would it even be feasible to implement most of the presently achieved inventions and discoveries? The answer would simply be no! Math has played a significant role in shaping the world into its current state of progress (Benacerraf, P. 1991.) As fascinating as it sounds, it has proven to be challenging for some individuals, yet this largely depends on the individual (Benacerraf, P.

To begin with, I would like to profoundly state how I have been positively influenced towards developing an interest in Math. Numbers have always created a conducive environment for me since I started learning. When I embarked on my primary education, the first thing that fascinated me was learning how to count. It was intriguing knowing that I could count like any other adult who taught me how to do so. Not to mention, my first math exam was a great success. Being the best in my math class made me fall deeply in love with math. I could not get it off my mind. Whenever it comes to this discipline, I have always had a strong sense of belonging. This is largely because I have always found it to be unique in comparison to most subjects, and I have always performed well from the very time I was introduced to it. Having always been quite confident, I know in my heart that I only need to enhance my quick thinking skills.

Secondly, as I pursue my major in Telecommunications Engineering, it’s crucial to note the units I will undertake in Math, such as Analytical Geometry and Calculus (Puttaswamy, T. K. 2012.) These two units will play an essential role in ensuring I complete my major and progressively move towards success. Analytical Geometry is vital to gain a deeper understanding, especially in Trigonometry, as it will influence the sine and cosine types of waves studied in the major. Moreover, calculus will greatly assist me in understanding how to solve equations given different types of expressions (Stillwell, J. 2010.) In my career, Math will be incredibly valuable as it will ensure precision during lengthy mathematical computations and operations. Furthermore, it will be used to approach various problems from different perspectives without limiting oneself to a specific method. Apart from my studies and career, Math also plays an indispensable role in my daily life, including carrying out simple calculations accurately, future financial planning, and basic counting that can be applied at home.

Last but not least, I made use of a net that provided terrific help when dealing with my mathematical skills. The website, known as EdReady, has proven to be quite beneficial and a potential solution to anyone’s mathematical problems. The website presented several study topics in a well-explained form, and the brilliance was thoroughly illustrated through examples with detailed guidance. As a result, even the least knowledgeable student would be able to gain some understanding. In addition to this, study questions were provided for further practice even when offline. This turned out to be quite useful since it taught me how to understand when to think out of the box or follow a straightforward approach based on the demands of a question. As this was one of my weaknesses, I was finally able to put an end to this unnerving fear, and now I can breathe easily with a clear mind. Not to mention, the website was quite easy to navigate from the very start, guiding one to register for an account and understanding how to tackle the lessons.

In conclusion, I confidently state that Math is a crucial discipline in everyone’s life. It enables us to have a flexible thought process for solving problems as there can be several different approaches in mathematics to tackle a single problem. It also sharpens one’s analytical acumen to avoid unnecessary mistakes and aim for accuracy. Honestly, Mathematics could be the best thing that has ever happened to anyone. Taking one step at a time, it does not take forever to achieve success in Math. Without this discipline, the world would definitely be deprived of many benefits and wouldn’t be as pleasant a place to live.

Mathematics is a field of science that studies numbers and how they are used. It includes calculations, computations, and problem solving, among other things. It is a subject that is accurate, precise, methodical, and logical. Mathematics has been defined in a variety of ways throughout history; it is an indispensible component of science and is utilized in virtually every discipline, including natural science, engineering, art, and economics. Mathematics is a vital instrument in our lives and in every scientific field that promotes personal growth and development on a broad scale. To avoid chaos and confusion, mathematics makes life smoother and more organized. Problem solving, creativity, critical thinking, and reasoning capacity are some of the traits and talents fostered by mathematics. Other unique skills include analyzing and communicating effectively. Everyone requires mathematics in their daily lives, whether they are a cook or a farmer, a carpenter or a mechanic, a shopkeeper or a doctor, an engineer or a scientist, a musician or a magician. MANASH BORAH

For more than two thousand years, mathematics has been a part of the human search for understanding. Mathematical discoveries have come both from the attempt to describe the natural world and from the desire to arrive at a form of inescapable truth from careful reasoning. These remain fruitful and important motivations for mathematical thinking, but in the last century mathematics has been successfully applied to many other aspects of the human world: voting trends in politics, the dating of ancient artefacts, the analysis of automobile traffic patterns, and long-term strategies for the sustainable harvest of deciduous forests, to mention a few. Essay on Importance of Mathematics in Daily Life for Students

Importance of Mathematics

Mathematics has its application in daily life such as Time -management, Finance management, Profit and loss in business, Cooking, Purchasing and selling, Consumption of electricity, and patrol. There is hardly any field of science, which does not use mathematics as a tool to arrive at the desired result.

Engineering , Medical , Pharmacy, Geography, Economics, Accountancy and all field related to science uses mathematical methods to study the subjects.

Definition of Mathematics:

How we can define mathematics “Mathematics is the body of knowledge based on numbers and figures”.

Importance of Mathematics in Daily Life:

Math has multiple advantages in day-to-day life. Let’s discuss the importance of Math in day-to-day life.

The most important thing about Maths is that it helps to develop your brain. We know that we can strengthen our muscles by exercise in the same way we can strengthen neurons in our brain by doing Maths. Our brain is made of neuron’s when we do Math neurons in our brain are stimulated.

Research work done by Dr. Tanya Evans of Stanford University proves that the student who performs well in Math can recruit certain brain regions more reliably and have more gray matter in those regions, as compared to those who perform poorly in math.

If you want to succeed in life then you must learn the art of time management math helps you to read the time and manage it. If you understand fractions in math in a better way you can understand time in a better way. Learning to read the analog clock is the first step of time management and it is possible only because of math. In school children are taught to read both times of watching the 12-hour clock and 24-hour clock.

Math helps you with your finances it is said that you should never spend more than your income. Math helps you to calculate your monthly expenditure and helps you keep your monthly expenses as low as possible. Math helps you to calculate what part of your monthly income you are spending on different services and goods. Math helps you to keep your monthly expenditure below your monthly income.

It also helps to calculate your saving according to your future needs. Knowledge of math is also required in investing money in property, bank schemes Mutual funds, or the stock market. This thing required sound knowledge of math and economics.

Math and knowledge of proportion can make you an excellent cook. Let’s take an example if you are making tea. Then to make one cup of tea you will need half a cup of milk, half a cup of water, 1 spoon of tea powder, and 2 spoons of sugar. Now if you have to make two cups of tea you have two take the above ingredients in twice the quantity i.e. 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of water, 2 spoons of tea, and 4 spoons of sugar.

In this way, math helps you to decide the proportion of food ingredients according to their consumers. All this is possible because of math. It is observed that people who are good at math are also having very good problem-solving skills.

Math teaches us to think logically and creatively. Math improves our thinking and improves our Analytical thinking and reasoning ability.

We all face problems in our life our ability to solve problems depends on the way we think. All of us can think but very few think rationally. math develops rational thinking in man and hence improves his problem-solving skills.

Math also helps you to stay fit and healthy. To keep your body in shape you should know which exercise and the number of repetitions you must perform. The counting repetitions during exercise are based on math. You also need a healthy diet to stay fit. We already discussed that knowledge of math plays a vital role in deciding the proportion of ingredients in the diet.

Math helps you to understand sports in a better way. Take the example of cricket knowledge of math helps us to understand cricket scores in a better way. Batting average, bowling average, run rate, strike rate all these cricket terminologies are based on math. Using math sometimes you can also predict the winning team before the match.

Math also helps us while we drive our 2-wheeler or 4-wheeler. It helps us to keep track of the distance covered and the distance to be covered. How much petrol is left inside the tank? What should be the speed of the vehicle to reach the destination in time? All these calculations are based on math.

Conclusion:

Math is the backbone of all science we cannot imagine human life without science. To survive in this world you will need the math you cannot live for a single day without the use of math. The importance of math is like oxygen in the air without which no human progress is possible.
