essay on gadget

Powerful Impacts of the Use of Gadgets and the Internet Essay

Introduction, smartphones and social interactions, smartphones, concentration, and engagement, rewired brain, space to be real self.

It is hard to disagree that people’s attitudes toward something new usually vary, and while some celebrate and welcome the benefits it brings, others only focus on the negative effects. One of the most contradictory scientific and societal responses is to the role smartphones, the Internet, and social media, in particular, play in individuals’ lives. Nowadays, it is common to see people in the subway, cafe, office, or shop staring at their phones and ignoring what is happening around them. Opinions regarding this often vary because one can concentrate on the different aspects of the situation. Overall, researchers highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones and the Internet, but most tend to focus on the bright side of the situation, and I support their view.

The first argument opposers of frequent use of the Internet and mobile phones in general provide is that they deprive people of communication with others, making them isolated and less empathetic. For example, according to Turkle (2015), in 2015, “89 percent of cellphone owners said they had used their phones during the last social gathering they attended” (para. 2). Carr (2017) also believes that social relationships and skills suffer when people use their gadgets too often. However, other studies show that it is a way to stay connected and show emotions that have changed (Fuentes, 2019). Many people smile, laugh, anticipate, and demonstrate other feelings when texting with their friends or leaving comments on social media (Brody, 2020). After all, “a conversation broken up into short bursts and quick emoticons is still a conversation” (Goldsmith, 2016, para. 5). Gadgets do not harm communication with others but emphasize the need to be connected and provide such a possibility.

Secondly, many children often hear from their parents that gadgets make them less concentrated and focused. Some researchers support such an opinion: Carr (2017) indicates that when people hear their smartphone receiving a notification, even if they do not check it, their concentration, engagement, and attentiveness levels decrease severely. Turkle (2015) finds it vital to spend more time without gadgets to improve concentration levels. On the contrary, Goldsmith (2016) notices that it is rare to see a person more concentrated than someone who is reading or watching something on their device. As for engagement, its lack in some actions people make using their devices can be defined as a chance to choose to be involved in the content they like (Goldsmith, 2016). Therefore, areas of engagement may shift from time to time, and it is great that users nowadays always have a wide range of online activities to choose from.

Next, the aspects discussed above make some researchers claim that unlimited access to gadgets and virtual space changes how one’s brain works. According to Carr (2017), “as the brain grows dependent on the technology, the research suggests, the intellect weakens,” and the enhancing proximity of the smartphone makes brainpower decline (para. 4). What is more, social media and the Internet, in general, make people adopt “the app way of thinking” (Turkle, 2015, para. 28). However, Goldsmith (2016) and Fuentes (2019) do not consider this fact increasingly disturbing as they believe that changes in the human brain in response to the developing world are unavoidable. Goldsmith (2016) poses an interesting question: “wouldn’t it be strange if, in the midst of this digital revolution, we were still expected to use our brains in the same way we read books?” (para. 8). Consequently, the change in thinking and analysis patterns do not necessarily mean the degradation of the human brain.

Finally, another aspect related to the use of gadgets that many researchers highlight is that virtual space allows people to act the way they want and be their true selves. On the one hand, such an opportunity leads to specific problems: some users might post threats on the Internet and demonstrate other aggressive behavior, showing, as some claim, humans’ true nature (Fuentes, 2019). However, both Goldsmith (2016) and Fuentes (2019) do not think that social media and mobile devices are directly related to the growing rates of online aggression. Moreover, when accessing virtual space, many people use it to show the other part of themselves – instead of negativity and hatred, they demonstrate cohesion, empathy, cooperation, support, and love (Brody, 2020). Therefore, talking only about aggressive online behaviors is incorrect because another, more powerful side of the situation exists.

To conclude, the paper demonstrates researchers’ different views on a number of aspects related to the use of smartphones and the Internet in particular. Some indicate that increased access to the virtual world has reduced people’s social skills, levels of empathy, brain capacity, and ability to concentrate, simultaneously allowing them to uncontrollably spread negativity and aggressiveness online. Others state that the mentioned aspects should be viewed from the positive side: individuals are not less socialized, empathetic, or engaged, but the ways they communicate, show emotions, and stay focused have changed.

Technology has increased efficiency and flexibility in the workspace. Technology has made it easy to work remotely, which has increased the productivity of the employees. External and internal communication has become faster through emails and apps. Automation has saved time, and there is also a reduction in redundancy in tasks. Robots are now being used to manufacture products that consistently deliver the same product without defect until the robot itself fails. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technology are innovations that are being deployed across industries to reap benefits.

Technology has wiped out the manual way of storing files. Now files are stored in the cloud, which can be accessed at any time and from anywhere. With technology, companies can make quick decisions, act faster towards solutions, and remain adaptable. Technology has optimised the usage of resources and connected businesses worldwide. For example, if the customer is based in America, he can have the services delivered from India. They can communicate with each other in an instant. Every company uses business technology like virtual meeting tools, corporate social networks, tablets, and smart customer relationship management applications that accelerate the fast movement of data and information.

Technology in Education:

Technology is making the education industry improve over time. With technology, students and parents have a variety of learning tools at their fingertips. Teachers can coordinate with classrooms across the world and share their ideas and resources online. Students can get immediate access to an abundance of good information on the Internet. Teachers and students can access plenty of resources available on the web and utilise them for their project work, research, etc. Online learning has changed our perception of education.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a paradigm shift using technology where school-going kids continued their studies from home and schools facilitated imparting education by their teachers online from home. Students have learned and used 21st-century skills and tools, like virtual classrooms, AR (Augmented Reality), robots, etc. All these have increased communication and collaboration significantly.

Technology in Banking:

Technology and banking are now inseparable. Technology has boosted digital transformation in how the banking industry works and has vastly improved banking services for their customers across the globe.

Technology has made banking operations very sophisticated and has reduced errors to almost nil, which were somewhat prevalent with manual human activities. Banks are adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to increase their efficiency and profits. With the emergence of Internet banking, self-service tools have replaced the traditional methods of banking.

You can now access your money, handle transactions like paying bills, money transfers, and online purchases from merchants, and monitor your bank statements anytime and from anywhere in the world. Technology has made banking more secure and safe. You do not need to carry cash in your pocket or wallet; the payments can be made digitally using e-wallets. Mobile banking, banking apps, and cybersecurity are changing the face of the banking industry.

Manufacturing and Production Industry Automation:

At present, manufacturing industries are using all the latest technologies, ranging from big data analytics to artificial intelligence. Big data, ARVR (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality), and IoT (Internet of Things) are the biggest manufacturing industry players. Automation has increased the level of productivity in various fields. It has reduced labour costs, increased efficiency, and reduced the cost of production.

For example, 3D printing is used to design and develop prototypes in the automobile industry. Repetitive work is being done easily with the help of robots without any waste of time. This has also reduced the cost of the products.

Technology in the Healthcare Industry:

Technological advancements in the healthcare industry have not only improved our personal quality of life and longevity; they have also improved the lives of many medical professionals and students who are training to become medical experts. It has allowed much faster access to the medical records of each patient.

The Internet has drastically transformed patients' and doctors’ relationships. Everyone can stay up to date on the latest medical discoveries, share treatment information, and offer one another support when dealing with medical issues. Modern technology has allowed us to contact doctors from the comfort of our homes. There are many sites and apps through which we can contact doctors and get medical help.

Breakthrough innovations in surgery, artificial organs, brain implants, and networked sensors are examples of transformative developments in the healthcare industry. Hospitals use different tools and applications to perform their administrative tasks, using digital marketing to promote their services.

Technology in Agriculture:

Today, farmers work very differently than they would have decades ago. Data analytics and robotics have built a productive food system. Digital innovations are being used for plant breeding and harvesting equipment. Software and mobile devices are helping farmers harvest better. With various data and information available to farmers, they can make better-informed decisions, for example, tracking the amount of carbon stored in soil and helping with climate change.

Disadvantages of Technology:

People have become dependent on various gadgets and machines, resulting in a lack of physical activity and tempting people to lead an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Even though technology has increased the productivity of individuals, organisations, and the nation, it has not increased the efficiency of machines. Machines cannot plan and think beyond the instructions that are fed into their system. Technology alone is not enough for progress and prosperity. Management is required, and management is a human act. Technology is largely dependent on human intervention.

Computers and smartphones have led to an increase in social isolation. Young children are spending more time surfing the internet, playing games, and ignoring their real lives. Usage of technology is also resulting in job losses and distracting students from learning. Technology has been a reason for the production of weapons of destruction.

Dependency on technology is also increasing privacy concerns and cyber crimes, giving way to hackers.

Effects of Electronic Devices on Education Electronic devices include integrated circuits controlled by the electric current; they are mainly used for processing, transfer, and control systems. Education, on the other hand, involves the process of gaining knowledge through an interactive process. Electronic devices affect education positively and negatively; the positive influence concerns enhancing education, and the negative influences affect the entire learning process. Positive Effects Electronic devices enhance education by making the learning resources easily assessable. By using a computer, students can access education information through the Internet. Additionally, there are technology-related projects that help the student be creative, innovative, and inventive (Eggers, 16). It also improves the teacher-student communication; these devices make a classroom a network system where there is a transfer of information from teacher to student and among students. Moreover, they directly help teachers in educating by bringing out the real picture in the process of giving information. For example, documentaries show the practical experience of events in history. IELTS essay sample: Has gadgets affected the creativity of young people?

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published February 4, 2016 · Updated April 23, 2024

Essay topic

Nowadays leisure industry products like gaming consoles and modern gadgets are widely used by young people. The use of these products reduces the creativity of the young generation. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give your own opinion.

Sample essay

Modern gadgets like smartphones and gaming consoles are quite popular with young people. Many of them make it a point to buy new gadgets as soon they hit the market. Gadget addiction has both destroyed and nourished the creativity of young people. I will explain my stand with examples in this essay.

Young people who spend a lot of time with their gadgets have reduced social skills. They live in a fictitious world of their own and often have trouble building relationships with others. They can’t imagine an existence without their gadgets and get panic attacks if they don’t have access to their machines. These people tend to have poor academic grades. They don’t have time to concentrate on their studies and they have limited understanding of the world around them. Most of these folks don’t read or write. They won’t be able to write even a simple letter if they don’t have access to the internet. In other words, these people will find it difficult to survive if you place them in a world where there is no internet or smartphone.

On the flip side, there are countless youngsters who have used the potential of gadgets and technology to unleash their creativity. They make apps and games. They write blogs to educate and entertain the world. We are living in the midst of a startup boom. If we take a look at those startup founders, it is not hard to see that they are young men and women in their early twenties. They are inspired by the power of technology and want to make a constructive difference to the world. They use their gadgets to change the world.

To conclude, technology can be a bane or a boon. It depends upon the way we use it. Young people need to realize that gadgets aren’t for killing time. They have better uses.

Describe Your Favourite Gadget: Sample IELTS Cue Card Answers to Buckle Up Your Preparation

You’ve probably heard phrases like “digital editing” or “surf the Internet” in relation to technology. However, learning how to use these phrases naturally in your speech is an important part of becoming an advanced English speaker.

In this IELTS Speaking sample, we’ve gathered a variety of IELTS Speaking questions and answers for the technology topic to assist you with this task.

Describe Your Favourite Gadget Cue Card

You should say:

what it is what you use it for how long you have owned it and explain why it is important to you.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Sample Answer One

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the iPad. This portable powerhouse is ideal in terms of convenience, size, and weight.

What Do You Use it For?

I’ve used it to work, read books, play games, connect remotely to other machines, research, shop, and, of course, email at various times since owning one. Except for that on-screen keyboard, the form factor has always meant that everything was a joy.

It’s not bad, but I find it a little awkward to work in for an extended period of time. Not only is there no haptic feedback (a small buzz to indicate that you’ve actually touched a key), but it also takes up a large portion of the screen, making it difficult to use when holding the iPad in both hands in landscape mode.

How Long Have You Owned It?

Well, I own an IPad eight gen. I have owned it for about 6 months now and it has never upset me with its performance, it is easy to handle and the new updates that Apple provides, just makes it easier to use, with new features and shortcuts.

IPad is the best tablet in the sense that its various apps are extremely useful in people’s daily and difficult routines, such as in their difficult working routines. IPad’s video apps are a great way to unwind by watching movies or listening to good music on a small screen rather than a big screen. While we can’t compare the TV to the IPad, watching movies or different shows on the tablet makes you feel closer and more real.

Explain Why Is It Important to You?

Image editing, blog writing, and staying in touch with my teams while working remotely during isolation are all things I’ve been able to do on an iPad. Not only does it assist me in completing these tasks, but it also allows me to multitask by creating spaces and combinations of apps, just as I can on a Mac but have never done. I like to keep all of my messaging apps in Slide Over so that I can access them at any time.

Of course, now that I can use a mouse with my iPad, everything has improved significantly. I use a Logitech M337 mouse that connects and works wirelessly without the need for a dongle.

In the meantime, there aren’t many iPad alternatives worth mentioning. Surface devices are excellent laptops, but they are not suitable for use as tablets. Android tablets come with a lot of bloatware out of the box, and software updates after the first year are rare.

Neither of these options has apps that are optimised for large touch screen displays. You can get work done on a Windows tablet if you treat it like a laptop and use apps designed for non-touchscreen computers.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Sample IELTS Answer Two

As technology advances, we are presenting many new and cutting-edge inventions in the field of electronic devices. People easily change their minds and become addicted to gadgets based on their desires. The most common electronic gadgets that most of us use are computers, television, laptop, and mobile phone.

In our culture, we use laptops to complete our tasks. As an example, homework, projects, and design. A laptop computer is a portable computer that can be used in a variety of settings.

Many laptops are designed to perform all of the functions of a desktop computer, which means they can run the same programmes and open the same files.

However, in order to be even more portable, some laptops, such as netbooks, sacrifice some functionality.

I have been using a laptop for 5 years and I bought my recent laptop 2 months ago. We’re all familiar with computers. It is one of the most significant achievements of modern science.

A laptop is a computer that is smaller than a desktop computer. It performs the same functions as a computer. However, there are numerous advantages and benefits to owning a laptop computer.

It’s lightweight and portable, and it can be operated from afar. You can take this machine with you wherever you go. You can carry it in your backpack or use one of the many laptop bags available. It comes with a built-in mouse and keyboard.

There’s no need for a portable keyboard or mouse. However, because it has so many USB ports, you can use it if you want to.

Taking notes by hand is time-consuming and physically demanding. Laptops allow us to type their notes directly into a document. Electronic note-taking is both faster and more flexible than paper-based note-taking.

I can use digital note-taking to automatically index and organise their study materials, search for information quickly using keywords, and share notes with other students.

Unlike paper notes, which can be destroyed or lost, digital notes can be stored and backed up to ensure they are not lost. While I can take notes on a desktop computer at home, they can only take notes in class, where they receive the majority of their information. Because the laptop is portable, notes can be accessed at any time and from any location.

One of the most significant advantages of laptops is that they enable students to access information from anywhere they have access to the Internet. Getting an Internet connection is easier than ever before, with more places offering free Wi-Fi.

Students can study whenever they want, no matter where they are, thanks to this accessibility. More notes and educational tools, such as educational programmes and websites, can help students perform better in the classroom.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Answer Three

The Canon PowerShot SD630 digital camera has been my favourite electronic device for almost two years. I rarely leave the house without it, as it is so small that it can fit in a matchbox. Previously, I relied on disposable cameras, which I would only bring with me if they fit in my purse.

All of my photo negatives are kept in a cookie tin, and the pictures I took with my disposable camera are stored in a variety of decorative photo albums on my coffee table for easy viewing.

My digital photos are now stored on my hard drive, with backups on memory sticks ranging in size from 264 KB to 2 GB. I even have old floppies with images on them, but I have no idea what I put on them because none of my current laptops supports floppies.

The beauty of digital photos is that they last a lifetime and should always have the same resolution and colours. I can also use Photoshop to correct, colour, and modify an image now that I’ve gone digital.

Because the photos I take with my digital camera are practically free, I tend to take a lot of them, resulting in a nearly full hard drive. I’m concerned about the day when the hard drive fails and I’m no longer able to view them on my monitor immediately. I’ve never printed any of my digital photos before.

As much as I adore my digital camera, my only concern now is what will happen when technology changes (which I am certain it will), and I will no longer be able to access the images and memories stored on the stick, just as I did with floppies, my hard drive, of course, will be history by then.

Banner

The photograph you just took will appear on the LCD screen of a digital camera. If it doesn’t appear automatically, press the play symbol to bring up the photos you took; you can then scroll through them with the arrow keys. You can view your images and reshoot them if you don’t like the composition or need to adjust the exposure compensation thanks to digital technology.

While technology now allows you to take a picture with the press of a button, this was not always the case. Cameras use some pretty cool science and advanced technology to collect and record light. While the time machine may be science fiction, the camera has the ability to freeze memories indefinitely.

IELTS Preparation: How to Answer Part Three Questions?

Here are some questions about technology and following them we will cover the following questions:

How Can Technology Assist Us in Our Daily Lives?

In many ways, technology has had a profound impact on our lives, and technological advancement has made our lives easier than ever before. To a large extent, the internet has played a role in this. It has also made day-to-day communication more efficient. In addition, communication and shopping have improved.

What Are Some of the Most Notable Inventions You are Aware Of?

Many remarkable and inventive inventions have shaped our lives and the history of humanity. Automobiles and light bulbs, in my opinion, are two of the most important inventions ever.

The first device allows people to commute whenever and wherever they want, while the second has made working in dark and late-night environments possible.

Is It Possible for You to Live Without Your Smartphone?

The answer to this question is a no and for some reason somewhere in the middle. It has become an indispensable part of my life due to its multifunctionality. Every day, I use it to make calls and communicate with my friends and family, send messages, access the internet, take pictures, search for information, and listen to music. Even if I lose it for a while, I think I’ll have a hard time. It’s a complete nightmare.

Questions about Public Places

Why do many young people like to go to public places? Which public places do older people usually go to? Do you think more people will move to cities in the future? Why do people who live in cities like public gardens? What changes are there in cities/towns?

Questions about Animals

Why are people keen on keeping pets? What are the differences between the animals in zoos and those in the wild? What should the staff at zoos teach the public about animals? Questions about Shopping

How often do people in your country/city go shopping? How do people normally shop? Why do some people like to go to big shopping malls and some like small shops? Why is online shopping more and more popular? Do you think online shopping will replace shopping in stores?

On the contrary, you should prepare notes relevant to the topic and practise talking about questions for 1 or 2 minutes before the exam. When you play it back, listen to how clearly you pronounce words and how well you choose vocabulary. You should also get in the habit of taking notes in a point style with abbreviations and acronyms.

We hope that this article has provided you with all of the information you require. To receive higher bands, you must be flawless in every aspect of the language. Speaking is a necessary skill that must be honed. A few people have the ability to write flawlessly, but when it comes to speaking, they either take long pauses or fail to make good points.

These 4 tech gadgets improved my every day life -- and I didn't know I needed them

min-shin

Some of my most frequently-used tech products today are ones that I would have never thought to buy just by looking at them. These include gadgets to track my health, to help me wake up in the morning, and to remind me to unwind at the end of the day. They're great for when I need to practice self care and pay close attention to my health.

Also:  The best smart rings

These are all products that have helped me get through my day, whether it be by maintaining my wellness through a smart ring or helping me work productively with my favorite earbuds .

Oura Ring Gen3

The Oura Ring become one of my favorite tech purchases. I was a little apprehensive because of its hefty price tag but ultimately gave in after doing some research and deciding it would be something that could benefit me every day. The Oura app contains four main sections: Readiness, Sleep, Activity, and Resilience.

Review:   The Oura smart ring's brilliant new features outshine even its titanium finish

Every morning, I check my Readiness Score to see how well I've recovered mentally and physically. I also check my Sleep Score, which measures how well I've slept the previous night. The smart ring also tracks different stages of your sleep throughout the night, including the time you were awake, REM sleep, deep sleep, and light sleep. There is even an option to check breathing regularity during your sleep, as the ring detects variations in your blood oxygen levels.

I've found that the Readiness and Sleep Scores help me figure out whether I should take it easy or prepare for an action-packed day. For example, after getting off a plane and feeling jetlagged for the following days, I noticed my Readiness and Sleep Scores were in the "Pay attention" range and focused the rest of the week on resting and recharging. Within the next couple of days, I was able to get my scores back to the "Good" and "Optimal" ranges.

Also:  The best fitness rings

Oura now also has a Resilience feature that tracks how well you bounce back from physiological stress. This is calculated by using two weeks' worth of data that are made up of the averages of your Daytime stress load, Daytime recovery, and Nighttime recovery. You can view the status of each individually and track your Resilience on the graph over time. Currently, the Oura Ring is $40 off on Oura's website.

Hatch Restore

I enjoy my sleep, but in the back of my mind, there is always the nagging dread of waking up to the sound of my alarm, which used to be the classic blaring sound on my iPhone. Thanks to the Hatch Restore, I no longer have to rely on my phone to wake me up. Once you download the Hatch Sleep app and connect your alarm, you have the option to set the time that you want to wake up and then the Sunrise Duration -- how long you want the light display to stay on before your alarm goes off. I usually set it for 15 minutes.

Review:  I replaced my phone alarm with this smart sunrise clock. The results were night and day

For example, if I want to be up by 7:30 a.m., the light display will start at 7:15 a.m. At 7:30 a.m., the alarm sound will turn on. You can pick anything from calming ocean waves to birds chirping.

The benefit of the Hatch Restore is that I can even wake up before the sound of my alarm to the peaceful glow in my room. The alarm sounds are great, but feeling like you're waking up naturally to a nice sunrise is even better. You can purchase the Restore 2 for $30 off on Hatch's website, but I have found that the original model gets the job done.

You can choose from a variety of different light displays that offer hues of reds, yellows, pinks, greens, and more. The light is gradual so that it doesn't immediately hurt your eyes. You also have the option to set sleep sounds if you like falling asleep to noises, like ocean waves or nature sounds. I've enjoyed the slow transition of waking up each morning and have found that I feel less tired throughout the day.

Beats Studio Buds Plus

My AirPods have been broken for a while now, and it wasn't until recently that I decided to purchase the Beats Studio Buds Plus. I was mainly looking for wireless earbuds that looked inconspicuous, had ample battery life, were comfortable, and didn't break the bank. The Beats Studio Buds Plus delivered on all of these conditions, and I even got them for $20 off at Target at the time.

These are earbuds that I see myself sticking with for a while. I like that I can switch from Noise Transparency to Active Noise Cancellation by just pressing down on my earbud once. These options are great for when I'm taking a walk outside and want to be aware of cars and bikes while I listen to music or if I'm working at home and need to drown out the nearby construction.

Review:  Beats just refreshed its most popular headphone line, and I can't recommend them enough

The transparent gray color of my Beats Studio Plus makes my earbuds look subtle. Best of all, I can use these earbuds for up to six hours of playtime after each charge. One of the neat benefits of the Beats Studio Plus is that when I get a notification or reminder, I don't have to pull my phone out of its pocket to check the message. Thanks to Siri, the earbuds will recite the message for me.

Renpho Eye Massager

Ever wanted to unwind at the end of the day and fall asleep faster? The Renpho Eye Massager has been something that I've implemented into my bedtime routine. It's a heated eye massager that you pull over your head so that it shields your eyes.

You can choose from a variety of settings for compression depending on how much pressure you want to feel the eye massager work on your temples and over your eyelids. You can even connect Bluetooth and play your favorite playlist. Currently, you can get it for $60 on Walmart's website.

Review:  This eye massager is a godsend for my migraines

On days when I'm staring at screens or reading a lot, the Renpho offers relief from eye strain and even migraines. I received the Renpho as a gift and would recommend this to parents, siblings, coworkers, and friends.

What are examples of self care?

Self care is any healthy activity that makes you feel at ease and relaxed. This could be going on a walk, eating well, meditating, or taking a nap.

How can I use technology for self care?

You might think that technology and self care don't go hand in hand, but there are plenty of tech products that actually provide us with peace of mind. Let's say you want to meditate but feel too distracted by the noises around you. A pair of noise-canceling earbuds can get you to a silent state of mind and aid you in your meditation journey. And if you want to learn more about your health and wellness, a health tracker like a smart ring or watch, could provide you with essential insights into your fitness and sleep.

Other self-care tech we think you'd love

These 4 tech gadgets are essentials for long commutes, the 5 apps i depend on to keep my life and data organized, how much tech can i get from temu for $100 (and is it any good).
