Republic Day is of great historical importance. We got freedom from the British on 15 August 1947, but we were not having any form of government or constitution or political parties. On 26th January 1950, India implemented the Constitution. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress and Poorna Swaraj was declared on 26th January 1930. Essay on Republic Day – India celebrates Republic Day on January 26 annually with a lot of pride and fervor. It is a day that is important to every Indian citizen. It marks the day when India became truly independent and embraced democracy. In other words, it celebrates the day on which our constitution came into effect. On 26 January 1950, almost 3 years post-independence, we became a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic republic.

History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly. Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947. After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. So, the 26 th of January was declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.

After Independence, the country did not have any self-made official Constitution, instead, its laws were based on modified colonial acts. So, establishing an official constitution for our own country was the utmost task in front of the Government of India. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Though it was enacted and adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 th November 1949, it came into force on 26 th January, 1950.

It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

January 26 th , however, marked a great event in India’s struggle for freedom. It was, therefore, in the favour of all that January 26 should be selected as the Date of Commencement of the new Constitution.

The Republic Day Celebrations

Essay No. 01

India got freedom on 15th August 1947. We had to struggle hard for freedom. Many people laid down their lives. Thousands went to jail during the freedom struggle. Then our leaders decided to form a democratic form of government. Some great leaders and learned men drafted the new Constitution. This new constitution came into force on the 26th of January, 1950 and with it India became a ‘Republic’. It was a red-letter day in the history of our country. Since then we have been celebrating it on the 26th of January every year. It is celebrated all over the country.

Like every year this year also it was celebrated with great pomp and show in our town. The celebrations started early in the morning. People went in groups around the city. They went singing patriotic songs. These songs filled everyone with pride for their country. An official function was held in the police grounds. Tents had been pitched. There were many rows of chairs for the invited guests. A small raised platform had been constructed for the Chief Guest to take a salute from the parade.

People have begun to arrive since early morning. The student were dressed in their uniforms. There were scouts and NCC cadets. The policemen wore their ceremonial dresses. Everybody looked smart. They were all standing in rows of threes.

At 9.30 a.m. the Governor of the State arrived. All stood up in this honour. He went up to the platform. He unfurled the National Flag. National Anthem was played. A guard of honour was presented.

Thereafter the Governor made a short and impressive speech. He urged the people to remain united and fight the divisive forces. He asked them to contribute to the development of the nation. He asked them to defend freedom at all cost.

Thereafter, the Parade started and went through the main roads of the city. Gates were put up at various places. People lined the roads and stood on their rooftops and balconies to catch a glimpse of the parade. There was a great enthusiasm among the people. The national tricolour could be seen fluttering from all the Government buildings and important places. The Republic Day had filled everyone with national pride.

This function is also celebrated in New Delhi with much pomp and show. It starts from the Vijay Chowk and ends at the Red Fort. The whole programme is telecast on all T.V. channels. Here the President of India takes the salute. Aeroplane fly of the Vijay Chowk making a Tri Coloured Indian Flag. It is a sight worth watching.

Essay No. 02

Republic day celebrations

India became a republic on 26 th Jan. 1950. It was on this day that the Constitution of India came into force. Since then the day is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country.

The main celebrations are held in Delhi. The place which is center of attraction is the lawns from Vijaya Chowk to India Gate. Thousands of People from the capital and other cities and tourists from all over the world gather there to witness the procession. Those who can’t come to watch it over the TV.

There is almost always one or other foreign dignitary every year who is invited to attend the function. The President comes in a bulletproof car from the Rashtrapti Chowan and is received by the Prime Minister. He hoists the flag and the National Anthem is sung by the school students.

The main attraction to the spectators is the cultural pageants of different. States and folk dances of the tribals. The school children also march and dance for a short distance.

The jets and at the end of the month the sky and throw rose petals on the spectators and the process. Finally, gas balloons presenting the colors of the tricolor are released in the sky. Some of the important buildings like the Rashtrapati Bhawan the Central Secretariat and the India Gate are tastefully illuminated at night. There is the beat of the retreat on 27 th Jan. when the tribal’s and others return to their home states.

भारत के नागरिक हर साल 26 जनवरी को गणतंत्र दिवस बड़े उत्साह और जुनून के साथ मनाते हैं। इसे संप्रभु लोकतांत्रिक गणराज्य होने के महत्व को जानने के लिए मनाया जाता है। भारतीय संविधान को 26 जनवरी 1950 को लागू किया गया था। इसके अतिरिक्त, यह ब्रिटिश शासन से भारत की ऐतिहासिक स्वतंत्रता के बाद देश को गणतंत्र बनने और उसको याद करने और जश्न मनाने का दिन है। भारत ने 15 अगस्त, 1947 को ब्रिटिश प्रभुत्व से अपनी स्वतंत्रता प्राप्त की थी। 200 से अधिक वर्षों तक, ब्रिटिश ने भारत पर शासन किया था।

गणतंत्र दिवस के सम्मान में स्कूलों में विभिन्न प्रकार के सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम आयोजित होते हैं। जबरदस्त ऊर्जा और उत्साह के साथ छात्र विभिन्न कार्यक्रमों में भाग लेते हैं। सभी शैक्षणिक संस्थान अन्य चीजों के अलावा निबंध लेखन, भाषण, स्केचिंग और पेंटिंग के लिए प्रतियोगिताएं आयोजित करते हैं। छात्र भारत की आजादी के लिए लड़ने वाले स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों पर नाटक और लघु नाटिका भी प्रस्तुत करते हैं। सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम का आयोजन होता है। झंडोत्तोलन के बाद राष्ट्रगान गाया जाता है। मिठाइयां बांटी जाती है।

गणतंत्र दिवस देश के लिए ऐतिहासिक महत्व रखता है। राष्ट्र ने पहली बार 26 जनवरी 1950 को संविधान लागू किया। यह दिन उस दिवस से प्रेरित है जब भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस ने जवाहरलाल नेहरू को अपना नेता चुना और 26 जनवरी 1930 को पूर्ण स्वराज या स्वतंत्रता दिवस की घोषणा की थी।

देश की राजधानी, नई दिल्ली, गणतंत्र दिवस परेड की मेजबानी करती है, जिसे रक्षा मंत्रालय आयोजित करता है। भारत का 3 दिवसीय गणतंत्र दिवस उत्सव राष्ट्रपति भवन, राष्ट्रपति के निवास के द्वार पर एक सार्थक समारोह के साथ शुरू होता है। यह इंडिया गेट से होते हुए रायसीना हिल तक राजपथ पर चलता रहता है।

परेड में भारत की सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक और सैन्य ताकत का प्रदर्शन किया जाता है। भारतीय सेना की नौ से बारह अलग-अलग बटालियन पूरे राजचिह्न और आधिकारिक प्रतीक चिन्ह पहनकर नौसेना और वायु सेना के साथ मार्च करती हैं। इस परेड में भारत के विभिन्न अर्धसैनिक समूहों और पुलिस बलों की बारह टुकड़ियां शामिल रहती हैं। भारत के राष्ट्रपति, जो भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों के कमांडर-इन-चीफ के रूप में कार्य करते हैं, सलामी स्वीकार करते हैं।

गणतंत्र दिवस की पूर्व संध्या पर, भारतीय राष्ट्रपति भारत के लोगों को 'पद्म' सम्मान से सम्मानित करते हैं। भारत रत्न या भूषण पद्म पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने के लिए, आपको कोई विशिष्ट उपाधि धारण करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। एक विशेष समिति लोगों को नामांकित करती है। भारत रत्न और पद्म पुरस्कार दो सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान हैं। भारत रत्न देश का सर्वोच्च सम्मान है। पद्म भूषण पुरस्कार के लिए तीन अलग-अलग श्रेणियां हैं: पद्म विभूषण, पद्म भूषण और पद्म श्री।

दूसरा सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान, पद्म विभूषण, असाधारण और विशिष्ट सेवा के लिए दिया जाता है।

पद्म भूषण असाधारण सराहनीय सेवा के लिए दिया जाने वाला तीसरा सबसे बड़ा नागरिक सम्मान है।

पद्मश्री भारत का चौथा सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान है, जो अनुकरणीय सेवा के लिए व्यक्तियों को दिया जाता है।

7. गणतंत्र दिवस के दिन सभी स्कूलों, सरकारी व गैर सरकारी दफ्तरों में झंडोत्तोलन होता है। राष्ट्रगान गाया जाता है। मिठाईयां बांटी जाती है और अवकाश रहता है।

8. गणतंत्र दिवस परेड में नई दिल्ली में राष्ट्रपति तिरंगा फहराते हैं और राज्यों में राज्यपाल झंडोत्तोलन करते हैं।

9. नई दिल्ली के परेड में तीनों सेनाओं की टुकड़ियों के साथ अर्धसैनिक बल के जवान अपने शौर्य का प्रदर्शन करते हैं।

10. गणतंत्र दिवस के परेड में विदेश से किसी मुख्य अतिथि को आमंत्रित किया जाता है।

26 जनवरी को ही गणतंत्र दिवस इसलिए मनाया जाता है क्योंकि 26 जनवरी 1950 को देश में संविधान लागू किया गया। इसलिए उस दिन को याद करने के लिए 26 जनवरी को गणतंत्र दिवस मनाया जाता है। हालांकि 26 जनवरी की तिथि को ही गणतंत्र दिवस मनाने के पीछे भी एक वजह है। सन 1929 में दिसंबर में लाहौर कांग्रेस के अधिवेशन में पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू ने अध्यक्षता की और इसमें प्रस्ताव पारित कर घोषणा की गई कि अंग्रेज सरकार 26 जनवरी 1930 तक भारत को डोमीनियन यानि स्वायत्त उपनिवेश घोषित करे। उसके बाद पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता के निश्चय की घोषणा की गई और सक्रिय आंदोलन आरंभ हुआ। उसके बाद 1947 में स्वतंत्रता प्राप्त होने तक 26 जनवरी को स्वतंत्रता दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता रहा। आजादी के बाद 15 अगस्त को स्वतंत्रता दिवस के रूप में स्वीकार किया गया।

भारत के स्वतंत्र हो जाने के बाद संविधान सभा घोषित की गई और उसने अपना कार्य 9 दिसंबर 1946 से आरंभ किया। इसमें डॉ. भीमराव आंबेडकर, जवाहरलाल नेहरू, डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद, सरदार वल्लभ भाई पटेल, मौलाना अबुल कलाम आजाद आदि संविधान सभा के प्रमुख सदस्य थे। संविधान निर्माण के लिए कुल 22 समितियां बनाई गई थीं जिसमें ड्रॉफ्टिंग कमेटी सबसे महत्वपूर्ण थी और डॉ. भीमराव आंबेडकर इसके अध्यक्ष थे।

Republic Day is national festival of India. It is celebrated on 26th January every year since 1950. On this day, in the year 1950 Indian Constitution came into full effect which provide a comprehensive and dynamic framework to govern the country. Since then the entire country celebrates this National Festival with great joy and enthusiasm. 26th January is celebrated as National Holiday every year. On the occassion of Republic Day school, collages and other intitutions orgnise various competitions like quiz competition, debate, speech, slogal writing etc. to make students understand the significance and importance of this day. In our National Capital, President of India starts the Celebrations by saluting the tricolor.
