Personality of My Teacher

Mr. Anurag is about 34 years of age, tall, smart and has a tough look. He also knows karate. He believes in high thinking and simple living and thus, always wears simple clothes and looks so sober. His manners are pleasing and liked by all. He is also an experienced English teacher.

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

Everyone has a favourite teacher in their school or college life. The one teacher whose classes they look forward to attending. They wait eagerly and never skip that one particular teacher’s class. Anita Sharma is that teacher for me. She is my favourite teacher. She teaches us History, Geography, Economics, and Civics.

Most of my classmates from other sections complained about how boring these subjects were. But she makes these subjects fascinating by using her unique way of teaching. All these reasons made her my favourite teacher.

I was never a really bright student in my class, I used to love other subjects, but mathematics was always my weak subject. But it all changed in class 9 when Anirudh Kumar became our mathematics teacher. In his first-class itself, he gently and in a very calm way introduced himself and went to each and every student to ask about their hobbies and favourite subjects. When he asked me, I abruptly said, “I don’t like Mathematics, and history is my favourite subject.”

The classroom went completely silent. I was afraid that he was going to be upset over my answer, but to my shock, he smiled and said, “We will change that by the end of this year.”

Now I am in class 12, and he really did change my favourite subject. I love mathematics only because of him. He is and will always be my favourite teacher. He taught his students in a way no other teacher did. Not only that, but he never scolded anyone for doing any of the work wrong. Furthermore, he was always very patient and friendly. Even the weakest students in the class including me were slowly improving in the exams because of him.

Way Of Teaching | He used funny and catchy rhyming tricks to make us learn the hard mathematics formulas. We never ever felt any discomfort or fear in his presence; he turned the class into a convivial and jolly place single-handedly. There were days when I looked for Sunday to pass, just to be in the Mathematics class on Mondays. Whenever I got confused or troubled with any problem – from a small long division sum to choosing my career, I went to him, and he solved all my problems in seconds. Even my classmates used to take his help and fondly called him sir counsellor.

On the teacher’s day, he even won the best teacher award. He was selected by popular voting. I realised that day Anirudh sir is a favourite of many. I felt very proud and happy for him.

Inspiration To Students | He was also involved in many social activities. He used to teach poor kids for free in the evening. He was connected with many NGOs and went to teach underprivileged kids in slums on weekends. I remember once he took our entire class to the slum area. I was struck with awe when I saw him teaching the kids there with the same level of passion and zeal he used to teach us in the school. That was the moment he became my all-time favourite teacher.

Impact On My Life | I scored the highest marks in Mathematics in my class 9. He developed a spark in me to study mathematics. He turned the dull and boring subject into something I love doing just for fun. I even scored full marks in my class 10 Board Examination. I spoke to him over the phone and thanked him. The mediocre student in me will be forever grateful to him for teaching with so much passion. He played a huge part in making me what I am today.

Every student in my class waits for her period excitedly. She also teaches us and guides us on good things and good manners. A Leader First, but a Teacher Always

To understand Patrick Tutwiler's career in education, from teacher to superintendent to Massachusetts secretary of education, you have to start with a book.

Unlike many people who knew from a young age that they wanted to become teachers, Tutwiler, Ed.M.’00, was set to graduate from college, with no plans to enter the classroom, when he stumbled upon Jean Anyon’s Ghetto Schooling — a troubling chronicle of the life of teachers and students trapped in a failing school system in Newark, New Jersey.

Tutwiler saw much of his own educational experience in the pages. “That’s when I received my calling,” he says. “I felt my heartstrings pulled and felt like I could make a contribution.”

After earning a master’s in teaching and curriculum from the Ed School, Tutwiler began his career in the Boston Public Schools teaching high school history, but as much as he loved the classroom and connecting with students, he felt like his voice wasn’t being heard.

“There were decisions that were being made that impacted how I performed the craft, everything from the schedule to pedagogical approach, and some of the decisions I agreed with and some of them I didn’t, but I didn’t have a seat at the table,” Tutwiler says.

After earning his Ph.D. from Boston College, Tutwiler served as principal at Wayland High School, headmaster at Brighton High School, and finally superintendent of Lynn Public Schools, the fifth largest school district in Massachusetts.

In 2022, Tutwiler was working as a senior program officer at the Barr Foundation, a grantmaking organization focused on arts, climate, and education, when then-Governor-elect Maura Healey named him secretary of education, a position that made him the top education adviser in the state and the first Black person to ever hold the job in the history of Massachusetts.

“Now I have a seat at a different table, bringing the experiences, the perspective, the stories, pain points, and the bright spots of 24 years of being in K–12 education to bear on policy and resource allocation, and it’s the honor of a lifetime,” Tutwiler says.

He laughs when he gets asked the most basic question: What exactly does the secretary of education in Massachusetts do?

“Well, it’s funny, because most people don’t know,” Tutwiler says. “I’ll go to staff and teacher professional development, or sometimes I’m with groups of high school students, and I’ll ask that question. ‘Hey, raise your hand if you know what the secretary of education does,’ and no hands go up.”

But as a former educator, Tutwiler uses the opportunity as a teachable moment to share exactly what responsibility the job holds.

“At a high level, I advise the governor on all things education, from birth through college.” That includes overseeing policy for students in early education, K–12, and higher education. Tutwiler also sits on the boards of each governing education agency in the Commonwealth, including the University of Massachusetts system.

Over his first year in office, Tutwiler’s leadership has been defined by his mantra of stabilize, heal, and transform, a reminder that schools around the state are still very much in recovery mode following the pandemic. “In the governor’s first budget, we were very intentional about making sure that we were building out supports to address” the issues still plaguing schools across Massachusetts, he says, including chronic absenteeism, teacher shortages, and student mental health struggles.

“One of the perspectives that I embraced as superintendent is this idea of a systems-based approach to developing solutions,” Tutwiler says. “And one of the real strong points of my role now is that we have the opportunity to build on, improve, create, and refine systems from birth through college.” Some of those solutions include a newly proposed statewide student mental health framework and an initiative to reimagine the traditional high school experience.

Despite his broad sphere of responsibility, Tutwiler still finds ample time to interact with students and teachers. Last year he visited more than 60 school districts around the state, and his team adds new stops monthly. “Those are really valuable experiences to hear what is at top of mind for the people these decisions and policies are impacting,” Tutwiler says.

Although his leadership journey has taken him further and further away from the classroom, Tutwiler still holds close the words of a mentor from his early teaching days that guide his work today as secretary of education.

“I have a sort of moral imperative that is wrapped up in a phrase a mentor shared with me, and apply this actively in my career, and the phrase is this: ‘As a leader in education, I must love the student, the teacher, and the craft of teaching, none more than the other, but in that order.’ That,” he says, “is my philosophy in this work.”

Over my 15 years as a classroom teacher, I’ve encountered a wide array of descriptors for teachers—ranging from the flattering to the downright unkind. Students often have their own unique ways of describing us, while society at large holds its own perceptions. Despite this diversity in descriptions, one common thread runs through them all: teachers are undeniably pivotal in shaping minds and futures.

In previous posts, I’ve delved into various characteristics of what I like to call 21st-century teachers, emphasizing the qualities that make them adaptable, innovative, and effective in modern classrooms. Today, I want to shift gears and cover a different aspect: the words used to describe teachers.

Words to Describe a Teacher

I compiled a list of 40 descriptors ranging from “inspirational” to “resilient.” This list will provide you with the necessary vocabulary to appreciate and articulate the multifaceted roles teachers play in shaping education and society. So, what’s your favorite one?

As a person with anxiety , I faced some significant obstacles early in my career as a teacher. I felt confident in my ability to impart information about content, but the act of managing a high school classroom environment quickly became overwhelming.

Having to address a large group of students while attending to individual needs felt like treading water in the ocean, and each new issue that needed my attention was a wave pushing me under. While I was always able to come up for air, I did not feel secure in the classroom.

The fact that I started as a substitute teacher meant that the amount of information I would have about the students varied greatly. It ran the gamut from scripts for individual students that I could read aloud to, at the other extreme, nothing more than a list of names.

Add to this the precarious nature of my employment situation, and it all seemed tailor-made to send me spiraling into a panic. But through simple techniques of reframing, I have become not just a successful teacher but a proud one.

Disruptive Students

The problem with which I struggled most mightily was that of disruptive students. I found it easy to become distracted by them, and I would spend more time trying to calm them down than teaching the provided material. This heightened my anxiety: If I only managed to get through a portion of the sub plans, I felt like I had not done my job properly. This was the first framework I needed to change.

After much consideration, consultation with other teachers, and soul-searching, I came to a realization. While it is important to teach the students the material and provide continuity for when the classroom teacher returns, my ultimate responsibility is to ensure the well-being of students.

Rather than thinking of disruptive students as obstacles that I needed to overcome, I began to consider each act of disruption as an opportunity to teach lessons that went beyond the academic content: Lessons about respect, community, and helping others.

This sounds like a massive undertaking, but it was often as simple as saying something like, “Hey, think about how you’re affecting the learning of your peers right now,” when a student was talking over me.

I did not have to halt the class to confront the student, something that would often cause me to freeze up. I stopped thinking in terms of interruptions and “getting back on track,” and it became easier to transition from dealing with individual students back to a whole-class arrangement.

Once I changed the script of my thoughts, dealing with disruptive students became about connection instead of conflict.

This first act of reframing led to a second, deeper change in my teaching philosophy . Because of my anxiety, I tended to micromanage the classroom: Hovering around students who were not focused, clamping down on any and all side conversations, and so on. Yet again, it came down to a mistaken notion of my job as a teacher.

I felt that if I was not directly interacting with the students, they were not learning what they needed to, and therefore, I was not “doing my job.”

After reframing how I dealt with disruptive students, I realized that I could pick my battles. Not every student is equally disruptive, and it is important to make the distinction between disruptions that affect the quality of learning and those that are merely nuisances.

My Anxiety in the Classroom

Prior to entering the classroom, I thought my biggest hurdle would be students’ reactions to my stuttering . I still have vivid memories of being mocked by my own classmates. Even when they were not openly hostile, I recall the feeling of seething resentment when I took “too long” to answer a question.

My assumption was that these problems would be magnified by my position as a teacher since students often view their instructors in a negative light. My worst fear was that they would view my stutter as “ammunition.”

To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I have certainly felt some annoyance from some students at moments when it takes me longer than usual to deliver instruction. On the whole, however, they have been remarkably accommodating.

Students have been more than willing to give me time to gather my thoughts, jump into complete sentences for me, and even allow me to communicate via text on the board.

I attribute this to my own openness about the stutter. I often introduce myself to students by explaining that I have a stutter and what methods work best to overcome it. When students feel like they understand this part of me, they are much more likely to meet me where I am, so to speak, and provide the accommodations I need.

I have been continually touched by this willingness, and I now understand that my stutter has provided unique opportunities to build relationships with students.

Dealing With Student Anxiety

I have had students approach me after class to tell me that they were not bothered by the stutter, and some even said they were inspired by it. Students have opened up to me about their own struggles with anxiety and other disabilities and how much it means to see someone like me working as an educator.

They have been especially grateful for the ways that my anxiety has influenced my teaching practices. Having been a student with anxiety, I am interested in finding ways to mitigate the kinds of negative experiences I remember having.

For instance, I very rarely “cold call” students, a common practice involving choosing a random student who did not volunteer to answer a question. In my experience, this can be incredibly nerve-wracking. Instead of doing this when no one is engaging, I often transition to a free-writing exercise in which students jot down their responses to the question.

This gives me a way to gauge participation without putting students on the spot and also provides a chance for them to improve their writing skills. I have found that anxious students respond well to these measures, and my classroom community is all the better for it.

Group Activities

I also needed to reframe my attitude towards students working together during periods that do not involve direct instruction, such as when students are having discussions in small groups. My initial instinct was that students went off-topic too easily, and small group work interfered with my primary “job” of delivering content.

On reflection, however, I realized that this kind of semistructured time is vital for students’ social development, and it is part of my job as a teacher to encourage that. If students are talking to one another and learning from each other, that counts as success.

Since adopting a more open perspective about my role as an educator, I feel that I have grown as a person as well as a teacher.

I feel empowered to speak openly about my anxiety and stuttering as part of advocating for my needs. In a very real sense, I no longer see my anxiety as a liability but as an educational tool. I have learned the value of being open and building community.

The lessons I have learned in the classroom are equally applicable to the rest of my life. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today had it not been for my experiences of teaching with anxiety.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.
