Effects of Globalization

Definition of globalization, drivers of globalization.

Globalization is defined as interaction among different countries in order to develop global economy. It entails political, technological, cultural and political exchanges which are facilitated by infrastructure, transport and communication. Some of the traditional international theories of globalization include Ricardian theory of international trade, Heckscher-Ohlin model and Adam Smith’s model (Scholte, 2005).

For globalization to take place, it must be driven by certain factors. The first factor that drives globalization is competitiveness in the market, which focuses on aspects such as global competitors, interdependence among countries and high two-way trade. The second factor that drives globalization is the government.

The government drives globalization through regulation of marketing activities, provision of technical standards that are compatible and elimination of restrictions imposed on trade and investment procedures. The third factor that drives globalization is cost.

Cost in globalization deals with efficiency in sourcing activities, world economies and emerging technological trends. The fourth factor that drives globalization is market, which covers ordinary needs of customers, channels of world markets and marketing techniques that can be transferred to different regions.

Globalization is associated with both positive and negative effects. Its first positive effect is that it makes it possible for different countries to exchange their products. The second positive effect of globalization is that it promotes international trade and growth of wealth as a result of economic integration and free trade among countries.

However, globalization is also associated with negative effects. Its first negative effect is that it causes unemployment. Since companies compete with their rivals in the market, sometimes they are forced to sack some of their employees in order to reduce salary costs and instead maximize profits. This is common in developing countries, where large numbers of unemployed people live in urban areas.

The second negative effect of globalization is that it promotes terrorism and criminal activities because people, food and materials are allowed to move freely from one country to the other. Individuals with evil intentions take advantage of this freedom and carry out terrorism activities and other crimes (Negative Effects of Globalization, 2013).

Many observers recognize that globalization is a multidimensional process, taking place concurrently within the domains of the economy, politics, the environment, the institutionalization of technologies, and culture. Therefore, it might appear a comparatively straightforward task to explain globalization as a discrete section of social life. Nevertheless, this relatively simple set of distinctions turns out to more complicated once we come to explore it in detail, and particularly when it comes to the dimension of culture. To comprehend these intricacies, it is fundamentally essential to ponder what culture is composed of. This is by no means a straightforward concern since culture is a complicated notion and has constantly created controversies among intellectuals, as well as a wider part of the population.

One of the primary issues of this controversy is the extent to which the notion of culture is represented. One view suggests that culture regards everything that forms up the livelihood of a group of people – the belief, inherited from early reports of anthropology, of culture as a “compact unity,” the absolute “way of life” of people. Non-material culture, in comparison, embodies the beliefs, perspectives, philosophies, and worldviews of a group of people. These two features of culture are deeply connected, and materials usually represent cultural ideas.

Cultural globalization alludes to the transference of beliefs, ideas, and values all around the globe to increase and strengthen social connections. The aforementioned process is characterized as the usual expansion of cultures that have been dispersed by the Internet, international travel, and mass media. These modern-day means contribute to the centuries-old process of colonization that has been resulting in the diffusion of different cultures for many years. The flow of cultures among different parts of the world allows people to participate in widespread cultural relations that travel across political, territorial, and geographical borders without any difficulty. The formation and development of such social and cultural relations are not only witnessed on a material level but rather it involves so much more than that.

Cultural globalization results in the establishment of shared standards, knowledge and consciousness with which people of many cultures and nations link their personal and mutual cultural identities. It causes growing interconnectedness amongst different populations and cultures. Globalization has caused an expansion in recreational activities by advertising global pop culture, especially with the help of the Internet and television. I believe you can remember at least one moment in your life when you turned the TV on and some Hollywood movie or a song was being broadcasted at that moment. These all were and are a part of the globalization process. Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural details such as beliefs, technologies, habits, religions, manners, languages, and others.

Although globalization has enhanced cross-cultural communications, it has led to a weakening of the uniqueness and idiosyncrasy of many cultures.

Religion is the pioneering cultural element to globalize, being spread by its followers with force, migration, and trade.Imperialism. The world’s most-followed and oldest religions such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and more newly founded sects such as Mormonism have taken root and impacted many isolated cultures in regions notably far away from their origins.

Globalization has heavily affected sports. For instance, professional athletes from more than 200 countries compete in different competitions in the contemporary Olympic Games. The FIFA World Cup is the most broadly watched and attended sporting competition in the world, surpassing even the Olympic Games, almost every kid in the world would know who you are talking about when you mention either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

The term globalization indicates either partial or complete transformation. Cultural traditions such as traditional music or folklore can be lost or turned into a mixture of many cultures once globalization “hits” that particular culture. Globalization can generate an emergency situation for many culture-states for the preservation of their traditional musical heritage. Archivists strive to assemble, document and transcribe collections before songs and tunes are absorbed and transformed into globalized pop culture, while local artists strive for originality and to preserve and protect local musical traditions. Globalization motivates musicians to discard traditional instruments for the sake of better economic and financial endeavors. They fuse local tones with modern-day global music and as a result, local music heritage gets lots along the way.

The upside of globalization is that it helps the music to become a significant player in economic and cultural advancement. For example, music genres such as jazz began locally in their early years and shifted into worldwide phenomena later on through the globalization process. Globalization aided global music phenomenons by enabling music from developing nations to spread into broad circles around the globe, thus promoting their products.

Some criticize globalization for harming the diversity of cultures. As a dominating nation’s culture is introduced into different others through the process of globalization, it can threaten the heterogeneity of local culture. Some people claim that globalization may conclusively guide towards Westernization or Americanization of cultures, where the hegemon cultural notions of economically and politically vigorous Western nations expand and weaken local cultures.

Globalization also has its periodization, driving forces, and actors. Contemporary globalization is the product of the interaction of social, political, economic, and cultural transformations. It results from paradoxical simultaneous multiple changes. Furthermore, the significant globalization impetuses are the close interaction between market capitalism and industrialization. It is the process where a myriad of actors participate, with each of them having a particular function guided by proper interests and strategy to attain them (Vallas and Wharton 9).

According to economic theory, globalization provides large-scale economic benefits. It does so through the provision of specialization in production in the various nations, enhancing trade and the economic output both in the region and abroad and, in so doing, boosts the living standards of the individuals of the country. Additionally, competition from economic integration is seen to make nations, including the US economy, more efficient and more productive.

Also, global markets present a variety of products to the consumers and help in the reduction of prices of goods or services, thereby keeping inflation in check. A study conducted by Waldinger and Michael estimated that since the integration of the global economy, it had generated an economic gain of between $500 billion and $1 trillion to the US economy annually. Similar gains of globalization have also been reported in other developing countries, lifting hundreds of millions of impoverished people.

Globalization has significantly impacted the American economy and the future of its companies, workers, and families. The increased integration with the world has made the nation and those of other nation’s economies to be more productive. However, despite the beneficial results obtained by the US government, it is not always a win-win situation for all Americans. For instance, the rising trade with low wages in the third world increases concerns of job losses and fears to the American employees that their employers will lower their paychecks to achieve a global competitive advantage. Globalization and the massive improvement in information technology and its revolution have expanded international trade in a wide range of services.

Additionally, it has resulted in an increased number of US white-collar jobs outsourcing to fit in the global completion. Furthermore, globalization has been accompanied by stress and anxieties as new competitors arise and compete for market share. Such shifts in the market structure impose costs on workers and businessmen, which could result in increased trades with low wages (Waldinger and Michael 14).

The wave of globalization is supported by three broad trends. These include:

• Technology which has sharply reduced the cost of communication and transportation, which had divided markets
• The dramatic increase in the world supply of labor which is engaged in international trade and
• Government policies that have continuously loosened the barriers to trade and investment.

Recent research is looking into whether the trends are creating new vulnerabilities for US works. Exposures for workers can be due to the underlined dynamic employment patterns originating from the increased need to be internationally competitive in the foreign markets. Other sources of vulnerabilities maybe those arising from a declining wage share of national income and in rising income inequalities, among other things. More focus should be placed on what extent the losers will be compensated. This is because the relationship between globalization and worker insecurity is very complicated and uncertain. Therefore, a number of considerations and approaches should be put into place, such as a review of US trade policies and how they will be integrated into the open world market and globalization. The systems of the most significant importance are those involving education, tax, and trade (Diminitrova 9).

Globalization has a range of merits and demerits in the US economy. Therefore, policies should be designed and implemented in a way to ensure that the American worker is protected without undermining the benefits of globalization. According to many economists, such policies should inhibit the dynamism of labor and capital marketers or create any barrier to international markets, of importance, understanding that technology and trade are the primary sources to overall growth and elevation of US living standards.

Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. Along with Chinese silk, Roman glass, and Arabian spices, ideas such as Buddhist beliefs and the secrets of paper-making also spread via these tendrils of trade. Unquestionably, these types of exchanges were accelerated in the Age of Exploration, when European explorers seeking new sea routes to the spices and silks of Asia bumped into the Americas instead. Again, technology played an important role in the maritime trade routes that flourished between old and newly discovered continents. New ship designs and the creation of the magnetic compass were key to the explorers’ successes. Trade and idea exchange now extended to a previously unconnected part of the world, where ships carrying plants, animals, and Spanish silver between the Old World and the New also carried Christian missionaries. The web of globalization continued to spin out through the Age of Revolution, when ideas about liberty , equality , and fraternity spread like fire from America to France to Latin America and beyond. It rode the waves of industrialization , colonization , and war through the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, powered by the invention of factories, railways, steamboats, cars, and planes. With the Information Age, globalization went into overdrive. Advances in computer and communications technology launched a new global era and redefined what it meant to be “connected.” Modern communications satellites meant the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo could be watched in the United States for the first time. The World Wide Web and the Internet allowed someone in Germany to read about a breaking news story in Bolivia in real time. Someone wishing to travel from Boston, Massachusetts, to London, England, could do so in hours rather than the week or more it would have taken a hundred years ago. This digital revolution massively impacted economies across the world as well: they became more information-based and more interdependent. Essay About Globalization Globalization can be defined as the process of integration among individuals, corporates, and governments in the world (Pieterse, 2019). The term is also used to describe the spread of goods, technology, culture, and information across country boundaries. Globalization has served to reshape the economic landscape of the United States with the introduction of new technologies, the exchange of business ideologies, and corporate culture. Through globalization, local companies are also expanding their operations, opening outlets, and acquisition strategies in foreign countries. Globalization has also significantly changed the internal environment of many businesses with organization managements forced to develop strategies that would accommodate the changes associated with it. One of the ways through which globalization has changed the internal environment of organizations is through organizational diversity (Borjas, 2015). With the increase in immigration as facilitated by globalization, the organization that I worked for was characterized by staff members from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. The human resource in the organization responded to office diversity through several team-building strategies to enhance cohesion and coordination among the staff members. The organization's Human Resource Management also responded through the inclusion of minority groups in various leadership positions as a strategy to motivate employees and also accommodate them in the overall goal of the organization. A code of ethics was also developed that served to promote employee integration and tolerance while harsh penalties for any employees that propelled any form of racial or cultural segregation. Also, as a strategy to accommodate the minority groups, the organization regularly celebrated the various cultures while employees were also given a holiday off to celebrate their respective holidays. The organization was also able to use diversity to enhance decision-making and utilize more creative approaches in problem-solving. Cultural diversity also played a significant role in the marketing operations of the organization whereby the organization was able to reach out to foreign cultures within the country with the help of employees from the organization who are more conversant with the behavior of the market from their cultures. Employees were also able to attend to clients from their cultures and this also helped in service delivery and customer retention.
