The versatile pendant lamp N-PL01 is designed by Norm Architects – Karimoku
17 December, 2023
The Japanese lifestyle brand Karimoku celebrates the official launch of its first lighting design to its wooden furniture collection. The new N-PL01 | Pendant Lamp is designed by Norm Architects and collaboratively produced by traditional Japanese lantern maker Kojima Shoten and Japanese lifestyle brand Karimoku.
Made from washi paper and featuring a wooden bamboo frame, the pendant lamp convinces with its reduced and delicate design language., the versatile pendant lamp n-pl01 has already been specified in numerous karimoku exhibitions and architectural projects as a custom-made product and is now part of the permanent karimoku collection and available to order in two sizes and two wood finishes..
The shape of the pendant lamp N-PL02 mimics the architecture of the Archipelago House, Karimoku’s third case study. With its high and triangular shaped roof construction, the summerhouse needs light being spread not only down, but also up and to the sides. The bottom of the light has been covered with a single piece of Washi paper, which is cleverly held in place by a few magnets, making it easy to disassemble should you need to change the bulb. The bottom furthermore acts as a screen, hiding the lightsource and creating a warm and indirect light. The paper cord creates subtle reference to the furniture in the Karimoku collection, but it is also inspired by the ropes and lines found on the nearby small fishing harbour, somehow adding a maritime feeling to the product.
“with its minimalist and iconic shape, the new n-pl01 is easily recognizable, yet it seamlessly integrates into and enhances any environment. designed by norm architects and collaboratively produced by kojima shoten and karimoku furniture, the process of developing the design has been a great source of inspiration and learnings. we firmly believe that the harmonious balance between the traditional japanese manufacturing methods of kojima shoten and high-tech high-touch philosophy of karimoku furniture is beautifully embodied in the newest addition to the karimoku collection.” norm architects.

Norm Architects was founded in 2008. The multidisciplinary design studio works within the fields of industrial design, residential architecture, commercial interiors, photography and art direction. Much like human well-being, the essence of Norm Architects’ work is found in balance — between richness and restraint, order and complexity. Each project — whether in architecture, interiors, design or creative direction — is imbued with the same intrinsic quality: a simplicity that carries bigger ideas. Guided by the body and mind rather than by trends or technology, their projects explore ideas that not only look good, but feel good too: Architecture be- comes thoughtful, minimalism acquires softness and visual matter assumes haptic qualities. Their work is sharp and crisp, and exudes, tacitly, a focus on quality, details and durability. Situated in one of the oldest streets of Copenhagen, Denmark, the studio is respectful to its context here and build on the traditions of Scandinavian de- sign — of timeless aesthetics, natural materials and upholding modernist principles of restraint and refinement. Through exploring what it is that heightens the human senses regardless of personal preference, their projects strip spaces, objects, ideas and images back to their simplest form. Their expertise lies in finding the balance — when there’s nothing more to either add nor take away.
Emerging from shared design values, Karimoku Case is a contemporary lifestyle brand, based in Japan and born out of admiration and love for serene beauty, material richness and timeless appeal. The Case collections are brought to life by world-renowned architects through individual cases, and the story of each collection is told through its native setting.

About Karimoku Case
MORE ABOUT KARIMOKU CASE
A SENSE OF SERENITY
Emerged from shared design values, Karimoku Case Study is a contemporary lifestyle brand, based in Japan and born out of admiration and love for serene beauty, material richness and timeless appeal. The Case Study collections are brought to life by world-renowned architects through individual cases, and the story of each collection is told through its native setting. With a holistic approach to architecture and design, the studio behind each collection creates a coherent style and setting, working their way from the architectural framework into the interiors and objects within the space, designing for specific needs and structures, rather than merely considering the aesthetic experience. With Karimoku Case Study we wish to introduce a thoughtful brand that serves as a guardian for the natural and timeless, using materials that possess an inherent richness and gain beauty with time and age.
QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP
As Japan’s leading manufacturer of wooden furniture, Karimoku proudly uphold a steady focus on quality. Their knowledge and genuine love for wood is reflected in their uncompromising production methods and remarkable attention to detail. Through the unique skills and production capabilities of Karimoku, the collaborating studios are encouraged to use the best possible materials for their case collections, ultimately creating design that last, maintaining the highest possible standards throughout.
Yearly or project-based, we invite architects to come to the Karimoku facility in Aichi, Japan to participate in workshops focused on familiarizing the collaborating studios with the history and production capabilities of Karimoku. By spending time together on-site, investigating each case and its context, we strive to achieve a shared understanding of the future goals of the Karimoku Case Study brand.
CONNECTED CULTURES
Karimoku Case Study was born out of mutual admiration. In both Denmark and Japan there’s a connection to nature evident in our respective design traditions. Now, more than ever, we see a need amongst urban dwellers for haptic qualities in our homes — a longing to reconnect with nature through surround- ings composed of natural materials and living surfaces. We believe that introducing quality design into our homes is a simple and efficient way of enhancing our quality of life. As a contemporary design brand, our approach is aimed at creating wholesome, human-centric design that, first and foremost, serves its user and context. It’s a subtle rebellion against the trend-driven, inspired by the durable ways of nature, and composed entirely of materials that patinate and possess timeless beauty.
CASE STUDY PROGRAM
Inspired by the Case Study Houses, Karimoku Case Study draws on the visionary works of the architects for the iconic, modernist program. In the 1940s, Arts & Architecture magazine commissioned young and successful architects, such as Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, to design inexpensive and easily rep- licable model homes to accommodate the residential housing boom in the US at the time. Based on new ideas for residential living, the commissioned architects essentially redefined the modern home, and the houses that were built are today considered iconic, modernist masterpieces.

The Karimoku Case Study 03 Furniture Collection
Minimalist furniture and lighting that blends scandinavian and japanese design..
Launched in 2019 with a collection of tailor-made furniture pieces, Karimoku Case Study has now introduced its third range of bespoke products. The lifestyle brand was developed by leading Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku Furniture Inc. in a collaboration with Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa Design. Each of the brand’s collections celebrate timeless design, simplicity, traditional craftsmanship, and serene beauty. Custom-made for a specific architectural projects, the products then become a part of the Karimoku Case Study line. Apart from their beautiful design, they also feature natural and sustainable materials; from bamboo and washi paper to eco-friendly glue made from wheat. Originally created for the Archipelago House, the brand’s third range effortlessly combines Scandinavian and Japanese design in elegant products.
The line comprises both furniture and lighting designed by Norm Architects as well as a sofa designed by Keiji Ashizawa. Compact and comfortable, Club Chair N-CC01 features a rounded backrest with an upholstered interior and a wooden exterior. Small overhangs on the armrests and backrest provide great grip and thus an easy way to move the chair. The N – DC01 dining chair fuses Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics in a simple design, while the NDT01 dining table draws inspiration from the branches of a tree with slender and heavy elements kept in perfect balance.
Designed with simple rectangular shapes, the Book Box N-BB01 storage boxes offer a stylish solution to declutter a room. The Karimoku Case Study 03 collection also includes the N- CT01 coffee table that pays homage to the facades of Japanese temples, the N – ST01 side table, and the N – SS01 shelving system. Lighting designs include lamps with washi paper shades and pendant lights that mimic the silhouette of the Archipelago House. Photographs© Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Karl Knudsen, Norm Architects.

Karimoku Case
Exquisitely site-inspired furnishings from Japan parallel a fabled Midcentury approach
Inspired by the postwar program that birthed modernist masterpieces from the likes of Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames, Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku Case launched a sister brand in 2019 with a similarly architect-designed objective. Karimoku Case beckons creative partners from across the globe to turn out furnishings based on a chosen structure’s interior. Guided by study at Karimoku’s base in Aichi, Japan, the collaborating designers have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the company’s extensive heritage and unparalleled expertise as that country’s leading producer of wood furniture. In the same way the original Case Study Houses established in the 1940s by Arts & Architecture magazine defined a new era, so Karimoku Case takes a holistic approach, with each architect or designer’s collection imbued with coherent style suggested by the intended setting, rather than merely the aesthetics of an individual piece of furniture or accessory. Made entirely from natural materials, the initial grouping referenced the Kinuta Terrace apartments in Tokyo with its large outdoor courtyard, where frequent collaborators Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa Design added to an existing set of furniture the architects had recently designed for the brand. Then, and in the collections that have followed, the richness of the materials, mindful production and a timeless appeal foresee that Karimoku Case is bringing about the icons of tomorrow.
