Law Movie Review: This courtroom drama makes a case for women’s rights

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

A young couple on a joy ride bumps into a young girl who is chased by three men. They offer to help her, enquire about her injury, and without any hesitation, she replies, “I was gang-raped.” Although she is in need of a hospital, the girl chooses to go to the police station first. She is abused, she is suppressed, she is stifled, but nothing deters the young law graduate, Nandini Vardhan (Ragini Prajwal), from fighting her own case and standing in solidarity with other women in society.

Cast; Ragini Prajwal, Avinash, Achyuth Kumar, Mukhya Mantri Chandru Director: Raghu Samarth Production house: PRK Production, (Ashinwi PUneeth Rajkumar and Govindu) Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

In her fight, Nandini uses the strongest weapon — Truth. However, not everything is in black and white in this quest for justice. Law , a legal drama, focuses on the relentless struggle for justice for sexual-assault survivors despite insurmountable odds.

Young director Raghu Samarth has come up with an absorbing film that incorporates the necessary thrills to the routine proceedings of a courtroom drama. The initial episodes portray how some cops handle such cases and provide a reflection of their insensitivity. The case takes a serious turn when Nandini seeks the help of social media for her cause. This public support results in the Crime Branch getting involved and officer Parthasarathy Brahma (Hebbale Krishna) taking charge. A case that was in cold storage for three long months is suddenly revived by Brahma and the investigation points to three men, one of them from a political background, as the prime suspects.

Throughout this film, we see Nandini not showing any signs of weaknesses, which are often used to depict a sexual assault survivor, and instead goes about her daily routine. But then, there comes the twist that brings all the difference to this legal drama. In a non-linear narration format, we see how Nandini’s guru, Jagadish Prakash (Achyuth Kumar), and his daughter, Dashmi (Siri Prahlad), a mute by birth, are also somehow involved in this case.

The second half of the film, mostly set in the court, works effectively on not just high drama but also subtle doses of humour, coming from the judge played by Mukhya Mantri Chandru. Nandini, in her first case, squares off against senior criminal lawyer Shyam Prasad (Rajesh Nataranga).

Will she be able to nail down the culprits, and fight back against the rape culture? What pushes her to fight the good fight on her own? These questions make up the rest of the film.

Raghu Samarth has handled an unusual plot which makes the audience wonder if such cases actually exist. Through this, he has managed to explore how such cases are usually handled by the police and law, and how the rich, despite all misdoings, go scot-free. However, considering this is a blazing issue, the film falls short on providing a strong and intriguing narrative. At the same time, the director does make sure the sensitive subject is not ignored.

Ragini Prajwal, in her debut film, has taken on a lot of responsibility in this women-centric subject. It is a good attempt by the newcomer, who is ably supported by a lot of senior actors, including Avinash, who makes a mark as Nandini’s father. Other actors like Achyuth Kumar, Rajesh Nataranga, Mandya Ramesh, and Sudharani ensure the film is effective in what it is trying to say. The film also boasts of a subtle score by Vasuki Vaibhav, and balanced visuals by cinematographer Sugnaan.

Law , which was directly released on OTT through Amazon Prime Video, is bankrolled by PRK Productions backed by Puneeth Rajkumar and Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar. The film, which revolves around issues for women does warrant our one-time attention, and surely sticks to the banner’s principle of backing content-driven films.

Law movie review: This Kannada legal drama is gloriously bad

Raghu samarth’s directorial, law, which boasts of an interesting core idea, tries to be a clever film but fails miserably in the process..

Law Director : Raghu Samarth Cast : Ragini Prajwal, Mukhyamantri Chandru, Achyuth Kumar, Sudha Rani and Avinash

Law stars Ragini Prajwal in the lead role.

Raghu Samarth’s Law , which happens to be the first mainstream Kannada release to head the OTT way, has so much in common with another recent direct-to-OTT release, Ponmagal Vandhal. In both these films, the lead protagonist is a rape survivor and is arguing her own case in court. If it was Jyotika in Ponmagal Vandhal, it’s debutante Ragini Prajwal in Law. While Ponmagal Vandhal wasn’t a great film, it didn’t disappoint completely either. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same about Law, which is a gloriously bad legal drama and makes a mockery of the genre.

The film follows the story of Ragini Prajwal as Nandini, a law graduate who files a police complaint of gang rape against three well-connected men. She goes on to argue her own case but sadly her character is so poorly written that you can never take her seriously. Even though you want to laud the character’s intent to boldly fight for justice, the film’s poor writing lets down the whole purpose. Except for Ragini’s character, there isn’t a single other character in the film worth raving about. As a legal drama, the film is a joke, and even otherwise, it hardly makes any impact and takes the audiences for granted.

The courtroom scenes hardly evoke any sense of seriousness. The film talks about crimes like rape but rarely do you feel anything for the victims including Nandini, thanks to the distracting treatment. The film tries to needlessly include comedy in the courtroom scenes for the sake of entertainment, thereby only making a mockery of the film’s core theme which is about a rape survivor. It’s as though the makers show least involvement in treating the case of a rape survivor with any sensitivity, and think it’s alright to lighten the mood with some bad jokes. The scenes between Mukhyamantri Chandru as the judge and his wife, who calls him on his phone while he’s in court listening to the arguments in the gang rape case, just doesn’t sit right.

Law has absolutely nothing working in its favour, and that’s putting it mildly. It’s surprising what made Puneeth Rajkumar, who bankrolled the terrific investigative thriller Kavaludaari last year, bet on this project so confidently. Law, which boasts of an interesting core idea, tries to be a clever film but fails miserably in the process.

LAW MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

' Law ' is Kannada Film Industry’s first movie to skip the theatrical run, opting for a direct OTT release during the lockdown. The movie is produced by Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar under his banner PRK Productions, along with Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar and M.Govinda. Directed by debutant Raghu Samarth, the movie has music by Vasuki Vaibhav and cinematography by Sugnaan. Is ‘ Law ’ the movie you can bank on for this weekend’s binge-watch? Read more to find out.

The movie opens on a lonely dark road, where an engaged couple tries to make-out. However, they get themselves in a tense situation as they spot a young lady running towards their car, seeking help. Taking her to the police station, they understand the girl was gang-raped by three unknown men.

‘Nandini’, the rape victim is a Law yer who wants to seek justice for this brutal incident that happened to her. She lands in a huge tiff against some big names in the political arena, fighting for the truth. Does she or does she not get justice, forms the rest of the plot.

Although there is a decent amount of work done behind the storyline, the mediocre visuals and the weak screenplay make the final output of the movie an amateurish one. A few scenes are abruptly cut in the first half, which might definitely throw you off for a moment. Just when you think the plot is set for an intense thriller, there is a slight deviation.

The director seems to have used the cinematic liberty little overboard in the movie. In real-life, not very often you see a rape victim being treated like an accused in a police station. Not very often you see a police inspector objectifying women and joking about rape. Not very often you see a ‘Lady Cop’ laughing at such sexist jokes. Maybe, in a 90’s movie, all these would have been said in a funny way, but not anymore.

With some shocking experiences in the Police station, Nandini sees that there’s no way these cops are going to fight alongside her for the truth. Predictably, she takes her issue to the social front and the public fight alongside her. Although the concept is not so fresh, the protests have been picturized in a very apt way, using different angles. The cinematographer indeed deserves some credit for this. The aerial shots in the pre-climax too make it a pleasing watch.

Without many commercial elements, the movie delves around Nandini and the incidents that surround her. Just when you get inside the plot, there is a big reveal at the end of the first half that might give you some answers. Touted to be the USP’s of the movie, the intense courtroom scenes as seen from the trailer are a huge letdown. The interrogations and the revelations are not very engaging and the director has tried to induce a sense of comedy amidst the serious mood and it falls flat. Had there been more tension created in those face-offs inside the court, the movie would have ended on a high, during the big reveal.

On the acting front, Ragini Prajwal has done a decent job portraying ‘Nandini’. Krishna Hebbale, who plays the cop, deserves some special credit. His performance is a standout and the rest of the cast members have done justice to their parts, with limited screen presence. Senior actors Achyuth Kumar and Avinash have also portrayed their characters right.

Technically, the film might not be very engaging as it seemed from the trailer. The cuts are handled in a slightly inept way, lacking the intensities of a courtroom drama. When such a sensitive topic such as rape is addressed, had the writing been focussed more on the victim and her fight for justice rather than a few ‘non-police’ scenes in the first half, the overall movie watching experience would have ended on a better note. The music too does not leave a lasting impression throughout the movie.

Overlooking the few technical f Law s, the movie carried a message throughout - The victim can never be blamed for getting raped. Attire, lifestyle, and attitude of a woman does not mean she’s open to non-consensual physical intimacy.

After Adarsh Eshwarappa's Binna, Law is the first Kannada film to release directly on OTT (Yes, you heard it right. Law isn't the first Kannada film to have a Direct Digital Release. So, please stop saying it.)

Law is a legal thriller drama where a Law graduate fights her first case (she's a victim too.) Right from the start, the movie sets everything you need to know what's going to happen in the next few minutes, you start guessing and the things will happen at the same way. The film starts with the slow pace and picks up at the later events however not solid enough.

Ragini definitely seems lot matured in acting compared to her short film Rishabhapriya. Despite…

Sickening, offensive, and sexist. The message isn’t only awful, it’s downright reckless and dangerous.

The editing gave me a freaking migraine. Not just because it‘s choppy as hell, but because the scenes are intercut so strangely. We’ll go from a dark scene to an uplifting family scene for no apparent reason. It happens often. And because of that I was confused what was going on half the time.

The court scenes are so undercooked. They last a couple minutes each, and there are only a handful of them. For a movie called Law , I’d expect it to have more... you know, law stuff.

The film, alas, is terribly written and executed. It's very hard to stay invested in these drab, borderline-nonsensical proceedings.

Usually, I don't watch Kannada movies. But making an exception with this film only because it is a courtroom drama. It's disappointing. Recently, we saw Ponmadhal Mangal is an average content but it's saved by execution and twists. This one is a below-average content and failed to execute well. One more direct OTT disaster for Prime Video. Don't watch this film and save some time.

An unimpressed court drama! Editing was awful.

Pradeep Kamadana

Review by Pradeep Kamadana ★★

The ghastly rape incidents in our country have prompted filmmakers to come out with films and web series like Pink and Delhi Crime to create awareness as well as to project the fight against these heinous crimes. Amazon Prime Video‘s 'Law', which is the first Kannada feature film to get a direct OTT release due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is another entry portraying the fight for justice.

Except for a few bright spots, 'Law' is quite predictable and courtroom scenes are insipid without any intensity or seriousness.

Writer-director Raghu Samarth has failed to cash on the emotions that surround a highly volatile theme like gang rape due to poor writing and even the twist during the climax, which should have lifted the film, falls flat due to amateurish handling. The whole film looks very pale and ordinary without any sincere effort to connect with the audience.

Court-room dramas are generally the most entertaining genre in the cinema medium. Films like this are exploiting the genre with improper writing and lack of proper execution. Few dialogues and scenes will make sure that we have a cringy face on why we ended up watching this film. The film could have been made a thousand ton better with better depth in the storyline and proper execution. As the director, the bearer of the blunders in this flick failed to accomplish his job, this film would hold the award for Cringiest Courtroom drama ever made in the History of Indian Cinema.

Law Movie Review: Ragini Prajwal gets her own Ponmagal Vandhal

Director raghu samarth’s law, starring ragini prajwal, is a courtroom drama that has a woman fighting her rapists, and patriarchy. but sadly, the film suffers from clichéd sequences..

Listen to Story

Law Movie Review: Ragini Prajwal gets her own Ponmagal Vandhal

Kannada film Law and Jyotika’s Tamil film Ponmagal Vandhal have a lot of similarities. For starters, Law and Ponmagal Vandhal are the first films in Kannada and Tamil, respectively, to take the OTT route during the lockdown. Even the film’s storylines are quite identical.

The two films have a rape survivor arguing her case in court. The climax twist in Law bears a close resemblance to Ponmagal Vandhal. In case of Law, Nandhini (Ragini Prajwal) is gang-raped by three men from affluent families. She seeks justice for the crime meted out to her and obtains special permission from the court to fight her own case.

The rest of Law is how Nandhini, who is pitted against an experienced lawyer Shyam Prasad (Rajesh Nataranga), overcomes the hurdles and gets justice.

In the recent past, directors have been seen gravitating towards stories with rape at the centre. Director Raghu Samarth’s Law also showcased the same with special focus on how survivors are shamed and not taken seriously at every single step.

The film starts with Ragini escaping from three men and ends up in a police station saying that she has been raped. That’s a solid sequence for the film and Ragini aced the scene. But, she is ridiculed by the police officers who show zero interest to crack this case. But, as the story progresses, the staging of scenes run back and forth, which is one of the reasons why we couldn’t feel for Ragini.

The investigation is then taken over by the CBI where Brahma (Hebbale Krishna) hunts for evidence. However, we are not shown how he narrows down the suspects without enough clues.

The film’s interesting moments lie in the second half when Nandhini and Shyam Prasad fight it in the court. Ragini, despite it being her first case, is prepared to take on the experienced lawyer, who is trying hard to suppress her, even in court. While Ragini’s character is fleshed out to an extent, we do not get to see how clever Shyam Prasad is. Their arguments in court look slightly amateurish as all Shyam says is the gang rape didn’t happen. But, he doesn’t provide any evidence to back his claim.

The climax of Law reminds you of Ponmagal Vandhal again, and it keeps you glued to the screen.

Ragini as lawyer Nandhini has delivered a neat performance in her debut flick. Achyuth Kumar and Hebbale Krishna’s performance are two of the strongest points in Law. The comedy sequences between police inspector (Mandya Ramesh) and the judge (Mukhyamantri Chandru), however, seemed unwanted to a story like Law.

Raghu Samarth’s Law did an exceptional job of telling the story of a rape survivor. There are certain glaring lapses in the story which fails to create the impact the film would have intended to.

'Law' movie review: Like a nineties B-grader

Ragini Prajwal: 'Law' sheds light on important message.

"Law" (Kannada film streaming on Prime Video) Cast: Ragini Prajwal, Siri Prahlad, Achyuth Kumar, Avinash, Krishna Hebbale, Rajesh Nataranga Direction: Raghu Samarth Rating: * * (two stars) By Vinayak Chakravorty

Decades ago, the Amitabh Bachchan-Rajinikanth courtroom drama "Andhaa Kaanoon" was themed around a basic question about law and justice. Does one necessarily have to be ethical while using the law to obtain justice? The question forms the crux of the Kannada film "Law" too, although the plot is wholly different.

Much like "Andhaa Kaanon", this film could have made for an entertaining watch despite its larger-than-life illogic. "Law", however, is crushed under the weight of its overwhelmingly sloppy treatment.

The sheer lack of craft about the film remind the fact that amateurish films coming from all across India currently threaten to drive the direct-to-OTT brainwave redundant.

For, random recall would show how, in a short while, we have had too many half-baked efforts across languages that would perhaps have struggled to find big screen release. You can think of "Virgin Bhanupriya", "Ghoomketu" or "Chaman Bahaar" in Hindi. The Tamil release "Ponmagal Vandhal" and the Tamil/Telugu bilingual "Penguin" disappointed too, as did the Malayalam film, "Sufiyum Sujatayum".

"Law", the first Kannada commercial film to bypass a theatrical opening, doesn't make great advertisement for the digital premiere strategy, either.

On paper, the film is positioned as a legal thriller/courtroom drama with a twist. The effort here is also to deliver a message about crime against women, and women's empowerment.

Writer-director Raghu Samarth's film, playing out a runtime of a little over two hours, makes you seriously question why it was made in the first place. As a thriller, "Law" is too insipid and laced with cliches to regale. As a commentative piece on womanhood, the film trivialises the very cause it tries championing given the unidimensional characters and execution.

The story takes off with young Nandini (Ragini Prajwal), a gangrape victim, walking into a police station late one night to report the crime. The cops are in no mood give her a patient ear. Instead, they snigger at her and pass crass comments. The inspector in charge gives a 'valid' excuse for cracking cheap jokes when the girl asks him to get serious: He has a heart condition, and the doctor wants him to be happy at all times. Things get worse when the girl's father (Avinash) walks in. He just wants her to forget the whole episode, fearing shame if things become public.

The intent of the scene is obviously to highlight the apathy rape victims by and large continue facing all over India, even from lawkeepers and their families. The outcome, however, is a bad start to the film, given the bad writing and acting.

There is very little originality in the way the rest of the narrative flows. The three young rapists come from powerful family backgrounds. They walk, talk, dress and sneer in a way that you won't have any problem identifying them as bad boys. In fact, as Nandini, a law graduate, decides to fight her own case (bringing back flashes of Jyothika in the recent "Ponmagal Vandhal"), almost all characters -- good and bad -- live up to stereotypes.

The second half of the film is almost entirely allotted to courtroom drama, as Nandini takes on the mighty advocate Shyam Prasad (Rajesh Nataranga), who is defending the three accused for -- no prices for guessing -- an obscene amount of money.

Quite inexplicably, marring any scope of gripping drama, writer-director Samarth introduces lame shots at humour as the courtroom proceeding begins. Sample this -- the judge walks into the courtroom poring over his mobile, and then looks around and snarls at the room full of people: 'What is this, why is everyone busy with their mobile phones like idiots?" Oh, and if you didn't get the joke, the orderly standing by his side pulls a face and mumbles to himself: "And what was he himself doing?!" The storytelling is that unimaginative.

There is an attempt to introduce a big twist in the second half, one that conceptually turns the story on its head. Without giving away spoilers, it raises questions on the notions of law and justice. The outcome, though, is too 'filmi' to leave an impact, owing to the way it is implemented.

Loud treatment of music (Vasuki Vaibhav) and camera (Sugnaan) in key moments only make matters worse, and the film does not have even one well-written sequence that might draw sympathy for the rape victim or revulsion for the men who commit such a heinous crime.

Weak storytelling affects the acting, too. Ragini Prajwal, despite being at the centre of a heroine-centric film, fails to come up with a performance that may resonate in your mind. Rajesh Nataranga as the defence lawyer Shyam Prasad and Krishna Hebbale as Parthasarathy Brahma, officer in charge of the case who adds to the film's only twist, are the only actors who manage to make sporadic impact amid an otherwise forgettable cast and film.

"Law" feels like a B-grader from the nineties, a worn-out effort with almost nothing to recommend for itself.

10 Best American Remakes Of International Horror Movies, Ranked According To Rotten Tomatoes

11 stree (2018), a horror comedy about an urban legend of a witch who abducts men.

  • Stream on Netflix

The mix of horror and comedy can be a lot of fun when done effectively and Stree is one such movie that nails the blend. This Indian horror movie is based on a popular urban legend called Nale Ba (which stands for Come Tomorrow). The legend has people painting this word on the walls of their homes to keep out evil spirits. Stree features a village where a witch has been haunting it for years while abducting men, while the film's main story follows a young man who falls for a girl only to begin suspecting she might be the witch herself.

The movie provides an ideal balance of laughs and scares while also providing a lot of heart to the unique and inventive story, helping it to stand out in a crowded pack. Stree received mostly positive reviews, with praise for its direction, screenplay, the social message at the tale's core, and for its quirky humor. Director Amar Kaushik won Best Debut Director at the Filmfare Awards and at the Zee Cine Awards.

10 Pari (2018)

A movie about a girl with demonic blood who becomes pregnant.

  • Stream on Prime Video

A great directorial debut from Kolkata-born Prosit Roy, Pari is a supernatural horror movie about a strange woman named Rukhsana, who may not be of this world. Containing elements of demonic horror, Pari concerns a satanic cult called Auladhchakra that sexually assaults and impregnates kidnapped women with the offspring of an Islamic mythological demon named Ifrit. Even more disturbingly, there is a group that seeks out the impregnated women and holds them captive until the baby is born, so they can kill them, decapitate them, and seal them in glass jars.

The story then follows the daughter of a woman who escaped the group's clutches and is now pregnant herself. It's certainly a bizarre and troubling storyline, but a unique one in the horror genre, and the movie also features an excellent lead performance from Anushka Sharma as Rukhsana. The Ifrit is a real myth in Islamic culture, compared with the jinn as demons of the underworld, bringing some real mythology into the tale. It's worth watching for anyone looking for a good demon-based horror movie.

A Father & Son Encounter Horrors During The Passing Of A Comet

  • No streaming options available

A fun mix of science fiction and horror, 9 also contains some touching elements regarding father-son relationships. The " 9 " title refers to the number of days that a passing comet will disrupt all forms of modern technology , including electricity and phone service. The movie follows Dr. Albert Lewis, a widowed astrophysicist, and his eight-year-old son Adam, whom he has a distant relationship with because he blames the boy for his wife's death during childbirth. Albert's brother-in-law also hates Adam, believing the child is evil.

The 10 Best Bollywood Movies On Netflix

While the father and son are investigating the oncoming comet, a woman named Ava arrives and begins to torment Adam, but not everything is as it seems, as Albert realizes his son's life might be in danger. The movie is well shot and filled with some good visual effects work, but the real heart of the story lies in the father-son relationship. It's an inventive sci-fi horror movie with some affecting personal drama that is well-acted by leads Prithviraj Sukumaran and Master Alok.

8 1920 (2008)

A new couple moves into an old manor only to find it haunted.

  • Rent on Amazon

Some of the best period horror movies include haunted houses, and 1920 belongs to this subgenre. Released in 2008, the movie concerns a married couple who live inside a haunted house . Arjun is a Hindu man who marries a half-caste British Indian woman and his family tries to kill her to stop the marriage. Arjun abandons his religious beliefs and his family before taking a job as an architect remodeling a stately old manor home. While there, they learn it is haunted and something in it wants his wife.

The film runs at a long 140 minutes, which is more than enough time to squeeze in a lot of great supernatural-based scares and some interesting character dynamics revolving around marriage. 1920 was a huge success in its native India and spawned a franchise that now encompasses four movies, speaking to its palatability as a mainstream horror film.

7 The House Next Door (2017)

A troubled teenage moves in next door to a struggling married couple.

  • Rent on Apple TV

The House Next Door is an Indian horror film with many effective scares that can both startle and unsettle. The story follows Krish and Lakshmi, a brain surgeon and his wife, who grow troubled once a rebellious teenager and her stepmother move in next door. A series of disturbing paranormal events accost the teenager , resulting in a battle between good and evil as Krish and Lakshmi attempt to rid their house of the spirits.

Siddharth not only starred in the movie as the brain surgeon, but he co-wrote the script with the intention of working with Andrea Jeremiah (who played his wife) in a horror movie directed by Milind Rau ( Kadhal 2 Kalyanam ). The House Next Door received positive reviews with praise going to its use of horror in the Kollywood movie scene. It's an engrossing old-fashioned ghost story, and it's sure to thrill anyone who enjoys good paranormal-based horror.

6 Kothanodi (2015)

A story of mothers & children based on indigenous folk tales.

  • Stream on Yupp TV

2015's Kothanodi is based on Grand Mother's Tales , a very popular piece of Assamese literature that has been enjoyed since its publication in 1911. The book is a collection of folklore stories written by Assamese poet, Lakshminath Bezbaroa. It would have proved quite difficult to adapt the book, given its legendary status in Assam. But through some good filmmaking and inventive re-imaginings of the classic stories, Kothanodi proves an enticing watch. The movie's story is based on four of the book's fables ( Tejimola , Champawati , Ou Kuwori , and Tawoir Xadhu ).

The four fables are told in interconnected stories. A woman wants to kill her stepdaughter while her husband is on a trip, and he encounters a mysterious woman who gives birth to an outenga. Another woman in a different village plans her daughter's wedding with disastrous results and a final mother wants to protect her child from her murderous husband. While not a straightforward horror film, Kothanodi nevertheless contains some very difficult subject matter that is sure to disturb and unsettle.

5 Aamis (Ravening) (2019)

A couple soon develops a taste for human flesh.

Aamis, whose English title is Ravening , debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019, garnering some very strong reviews. The story follows a content pediatrician named Nirmali, who meets a Ph.D. student studying Indian eating habits. The two quickly form a bond and soon begin experimenting with different types of meat. Before long, Nirmali develops an obsession with trying human meat, which leads to a horrifying conclusion as their secret desires soon become public.

15 Best Hindi Movies On Amazon Prime Right Now

It's a grotesque storyline that will satiate even the most critical horror fan, drawing inspiration from the extreme movies of the '80s that were banned for their violence and depraved content matter. While the ending left something to be desired for some critics, it still received mostly positive reviews for the disturbing story and the movie's direction. Bhaskar Hazarika won the Best Director Award at the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival.

4 Mahal (1949)

Bollywood's first horror movie.

Often credited as Bollywood's first horror movie, Mahal is worth watching simply for its historical importance. Released in 1949, the movie stars Ashok Kumar as Hari Shankar, a man who experiences visions and bizarre occurrences inside his new, abandoned palace. He begins to see visions of a mysterious woman who claims that she was his lover in a precious life. The movie draws on themes of reincarnation while presenting a tantalizing mystery that is filled with both scares and tempting questions.

Mahal was enormously popular in its native India, turning gothic horror into a popular genre and making Madhubala a Hindi cinema icon. It ended up as a national hit when it was released, proving that suspenseful horror movies had a place in India, and the critical reaction was overwhelmingly positive as the years wore on, improving as years passed and it became a cult classic. The movie remained Madhubala's highest-grossing movie for six years after its release as he continued to rise up the ranks of stardom.

3 Bhoot (2003)

A demonic possession movie.

Taking enormous influence from The Exorcist , Bhoot is a worthwhile addition to the malevolent demonic possession subgenre. This movie is about a married couple — Vishal and Swati — who move into a haunted apartment and begin to experience severe repercussions in the form of Swati's possession. Bhoot contains some solid possession-based scares and is led by a great performance from Urmila Matondkar (playing Swati), who won a Bollywood Movie Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her unnerving performance is bound to give any viewer chills.

Bhoot also won the Bollywood Movie Award for Best Director (Ram Gopal Varma). The movie was also so popular that it received a sequel called Bhoot Returns in 2012. There have been new Bhoot films coming out since 2020, but these are not part of the original franchise as Dharma Productions purchased the rights to the name to tell some new stories.

2 13B: Fear Has A New Address (2009)

A man watches his family's future on a telenovela.

Aside from the rather silly name, 13B: Fear Has a New Address is a fun little low-budget Indian film. The film looks fantastic despite its obvious lack of money, working wonders with inventive camera angles and beautiful framing. Madhavan also proves a capable leading actor, portraying a man who watches the future of his family through a telenovela that is playing exclusively on his television set. He soon learns the terrifying secret that a family was butchered in his new apartment years before.

It mixes elements of J-horror with a unique storyline, resulting in an original horror film that is both horrifying and intellectually challenging, as the twist ending proves that things rarely end well in these supernatural stories. 13B: Fear Has a New Address , which was also known as Yavarum Nalam , received mixed reviews, but it was a huge success at the box office when released as the Tamil version, but it was a commercial failure when released as the Hindi version.

1 Tumbbad (2018)

A village goes against the goddess of prosperity & suffer for it.

Tumbbad received its premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, making it the first Indian movie to show at that particular festival. It speaks not only to the quality of the film but also to the emergence of Indian horror as a popular genre of film outside the continent. The mythical story concerns the residents of Tumbbad, Maharashtra, who go against the orders of the Goddess of Prosperity and suffer a devastating curse. It went on to achieve critical success, with eight nominations and three wins at the Filmfare Awards.

The movie also wasn't an easy film shoot, as director Rahi Anil Barve made it in 2012, but he wasn't happy with what he saw after editing it. He went back and re-wrote and re-shot it in 2015, and that is the movie that fans can see today. It's a great Indian film with its roots in the country's tradition that shows off some truly exceptional cinematography and bone-chilling scares, and it's one of the country's greatest horror exports.
