Money Can’t Buy Happiness Essay for Students and Children in English

Money Can’t Buy Happiness Essay: The proverb “Money Can’t Buy Happiness” states that money can buy all the materialistic things like cars, houses, and also you can live a luxurious life too but having all the materialistic things surely will not give happiness. Money can be used to buy anything in the world but there is no shop where you can walk and buy happiness and so they say money can’t buy happiness.

When it comes to the question of whether money can buy happiness or not the answer here is that money is just a tool to buy things that give us luxury which in turn will give us happiness. But it doesn’t necessarily increase our happiness. Buying more and more luxurious things won’t really bring you more joy. More money isn’t going to improve your mindset, nor will it bring peace to mind. In other words, you can say that more money can’t buy happiness. There are many aspects which money can’t give.

Suppose you think a new 24” LED TV will bring you happiness but after having the same 24” LED you see a better option and it makes you feel sad. You want to have better than this. It is not actually the tv that gives you happiness, it is the human nature of having more. A human being is one who is never satisfied. Happiness is actually the state of mind which cannot be achieved by materialistic things. There are many reasons which prove that money can’t buy happiness.

Buying stuff won’t make us happy, because we tend to compare it with others. Comparisons are ridiculous and quite often harmful to us.

What is Happiness?

Is it a big car, a luxurious house, or a big-screen LED TV?  Buying any new stuff feels great at first.  But gradually months and years later, the excitement decreases. The bright, shiny, newness will eventually go down and you’ll want a new one or more.

Happiness is a feeling. Feeling that money can’t buy. If someone asks are you happy, what will you answer?.

Happiness means satisfaction. Be satisfied with what you have in your life.  Not to crave on the things that you don’t have.

Reasons Why Money Can’t Buy Happiness

There are some very good reasons why having more money doesn’t necessarily make a person happier. It can actually turn the opposite. Many wealthy people, for example, are actually under stress.

Here we mention few reasons why money can’t buy happiness

Money Can’t Buy Happiness Essay for Students

More Stuff More Work

Many think that if you get more luxurious stuff our life would be happier but that isn’t true. The more the stuff, the more work it takes to take care of it. Day by day everything has become larger. Today people want larger houses to live in but keeping it clean and maintained is again a challenge. It takes more time and effort to keep your mansions neat and tidy.

More Stuff Less Free Time

As you own more stuff, you will get less free time because you’ll be spending time in the maintenance of the things you bought. Time is very important for everyone, but much of our free time is spent doing house chores and taking care of our stuff. You can use the money to hire maids but that is not possible in every situation.

More Stuff More Expenses

The more stuff you own, the more money you will have to spend to maintain it.

For example, bigger houses need more repairs than smaller ones. Unfortunately, repairs are a necessary part and can be expensive.

The more stuff you own, the more work and money is spent to maintain it. Having less stuff can free up some of your time to do things you enjoy. So money cannot always bring you happiness.

Materialistic things give Temporary Satisfaction

Money can buy temporary happiness. Everyone experiences themselves on cloud nine when they’ve bought something they’ve been desiring. These feelings of happiness are usually temporary. This happiness soon fades away and that new thing is no longer interesting.

Scientists have proved that we get more happiness from our experiences but not from materialistic things. And also they don’t cost much.

Time spent with your loved ones will give you more happiness than buying a costly item that you were eyeing for a long time.

Money Can’t Buy Family, Friends and Love

Family, friends and your loved ones are the people who will make you special. They are the people whose surroundings will make you happy. And definitely, money cannot buy these relationships.

When people are dying and taking their last breath they don’t want to see the things they own or the achievements of their life. All they want to see are their loved ones.

It’s their relationships that really matter but not stuff.

True love doesn’t care whether your loved one is rich or poor. That person will value you for who you are and not money.

Money Can’t Buy Happiness

Money Can’t Give You Peace of Mind

A person can live without a big house, he can survive without driving a car but cannot live with a stressful mind. True happiness has nothing to do with the bank balance. More money also sometimes steals away the peace of mind because of insecurity.

Changing our outlook for money is the first step in achieving true happiness, the kind of happiness that comes from being satisfied with what you have.

In conclusion, once you have your basic needs like food, water, shelter, clothing and the feeling of safety, then money can’t buy happiness.

It’s up to you to build meaningful relationships, enjoy the little things in life, and start spending your money on experiences and other people rather than materialistic things.

Essay on Money Can not Buy Real Happiness For Students

Introduction

Money can’t buy happiness. Money can be a tool to buy things that brings temporary pleasure but it can’t buy permanent happiness. Happiness depicts the reflection of one’s soul, it depends upon the inner state of mind.

It derives its route from internal satisfaction & contentment that can not be bought with money. Materialism has nothing to with Happiness:

People have made the concept that having money can solve their all problems and this will lead them to live a happy life.

But it’s probably not the fact. Having money doesn’t make you happy. Money can buy the basic necessities of life.

It may be needed to buy food, clothes, car, groceries & all other things that are required to lead a better life style. But these basic necessities are not the measure of happiness.

Wearing branded clothes, having a prestigious home & a wide car does not enriches a person with real happiness. It gives a temporary pleasure that can be faded away leaving not even a single foot step behind.

If happiness was something to be bought by money then all the rich would be the happiest & the poor would be the miserable ones having the sorrowful & saddest heart. But that’s not the case. Often poor people are seemed to have a happy life.

And there are many billionaires who are miserable & having therapy sessions. Many millionaires, stars & celebrities committing suicide to escape from their depressed, lunatic & stressed life.People are under the illusion that by making more money, they will be more happier.

But, money begs more money. It just increases our greed. In a pursuit to have more money we tend not to invest in building affectionate relationships & having a quality time with our family. Man is s social animal.

He wants to be loved. He wants to be cared. He needs friendship, he needs attention and lovable relationships to live a happy life.

These aspects of life have nothing to do with material things. Happiness can not be bought by money & material things.

Happiness is the inner state of Mind

Happiness is the inner state of mind. It comes from internal satisfaction & contentment. It has nothing to do with one’s bank balance. Happiness is being surrounded by loved ones, having affectionate relationships, having awesome friends and having a caring family.

Happiness is hidden in such little things. Money can’t buy friendship. Friends & family are not products that can be bought by money. Money can not fix broken relationships. Not everything can be fixed by money.

Happiness is the reflection of inner state of mind. If a person has half glass empty mind without wealth, he may remains the same after he gets a lot of money. Money can not change the state of mind.

Happiness is enjoying our own company, living in peace and harmony with our own soul, and in love with ourselves. For being truly happy, we don not need money & material things.

Money is a physical entity which can buy measurable things. But happiness, being abstract in nature, can not be bought with money. Money can buy medicines but not health , it can buy beds but not sleep.

Similarly, it can buy the tools which may bring happiness but not happiness itself. Happiness is inner state of mind in which we can be no matter what circumstances life throws at us.

Money can’t buy Happiness Essay 1 (200 words)

In general, Happiness is a difficult word to define. The way of measuring happiness is different for everyone. Few people trust that money can buy happiness, whereas others disagree. According to me, although having lots of money will surely provide us lot of ways to entertain ourselves but it can’t buy love and happiness.

Money can’t buy love and a happy life comes from having good friends and family who care about us. Our life becomes meaningful and happy when we are around loved ones. For example, I have read an article about a famous actress in Bollywood who died due to depression and was all alone during her last days. She had been a really popular actress because of her beauty and acting skills. Even though she was earning a huge fortune every year, she was not happy as she didn’t have any close friend or family who could take care of her. Whereas I have seen people who have a happy life without money because they are surrounded by people who love them and care for them.

In most cases people have to work hard to earn lots of money and due to which they have less time for their social life. Many businessmen work 6 days a week and earn good money but they don’t have the time to spend that money and remain stressed. People have money but if they don’t have the time to enjoy their life than it is worthless.

This term happiness can be well explained by the happiness model. It is quite simple; Happiness refers to a greater presentation which can bring greater rewards. Let’s take a look at the Happiness Model:

The Happiness Model

According to this model, if you love what you do then it is obvious that you will be keen on knowing it better and will have a better clarity on the subject. With this clarity, you are bound to perform better which lead you to success and thus the reward attached to it.

A Psychological study has revealed that bigger happiness, comfort, and positivity can show the way to better performance. Whatsoever activity one is undertaking, he is sure to be successful when he is in a state of happiness. It enables him to perform at a superior level.

What does it bring? It brings the rewards that you are aiming at. These can be both monetary and non-monetary. It can be a simple appreciation from your superior at work and receiving a pat on the back. On the other hand, it may also lead to the achievement of your sales target and attainment of the bonus attached to it, or a greater opportunity of getting a promotion.

The more constant and steady your happiness and optimistic outlook is, the better performance you will have in your pursuit.

A person will be more productive and more successful in whatever work he is doing if he is coming to work with excitement each day. In your personal life, it is not different.

You will reap the reward if you do what you love. You will generally perform better and will not only be more wealthy in monetary and non-monetary terms but you will also lead a more fulfilling and happy life. There is a world of opportunities. So get out into the world and enjoy what’s around.

Money can’t buy Happiness 3 (400 words)

A lot of people think that happiness can be acquired with the help of money, or that you need money to be happy. But there are a few of us that still believe that the best things in life are free. Many things that can make us truly happy cost nothing. Friends, family, relationships all are priceless. Such things cannot be bought and that is what real happiness is about. Several people think that material wealth or just plain money can make them happy, or can buy them the things they believe can make them happy.

Money can’t buy Happiness

Our family, friends, and relatives are the people that have been there for us all through our lives. All the memories we have with us were created with them and every story behind our bumps, bruises, embarrassments, dating experiences and all other extraordinary events is known to them. No amount of money on the planet could pay for that. Memories are formed and created hence they cannot be paid for or paid off. I have been a family oriented person, so I don’t appreciate why some people would think that money could buy happiness.

Lot of us think of our friends as treasures. A friend is somebody that likes you for what you are and who you are, and they continue to believe in you even when you stop believing in yourself. The friendship which we form is a tight bond and we get emotionally involved with people. Money can’t obstruct with our approach, nor can money buy us true friends. We as individuals would be very sorrowful without friends to tell our secrets to and having a shoulder to lean on when we need it.

I have personally seen people who buy clothes, accessories, food or anything to buy friends. It might work but only for a while and then it just goes to demonstrate once again that money cannot buy happiness.

The finest things in life are indeed free. We may occasionally take for granted the items we have, which are priceless. We might not realize how important love, family, and friends are, but when we really analyze it, we know that indeed the best things in life are free of cost. Money can only buy the materialistic things and relations that last for a short while whereas no money is required for the relations build with heart and emotions. Remember, money can’t buy you happiness but happiness can get you more money!

Money can’t buy Happiness 4 (500 words)

Can you be happy if you have a big mansion to stay, an indoor pool to bathe or a luxury car to drive. Or is it something related to the sense of freedom, love, relationship, and self-realization. There are basically two types of people who think that Money can’t buy happiness – Those who have an excess of money and still find themselves unhappy and those who have never had plenty of money.

What is Happin ess?

What is happiness? Is it pleasure?

Is there any difference between happiness and pleasure?

Happiness is always defined differently by different people. Somebody’s happiness may be a bad fortune to the other. So what is ultimate happiness? It is something which differentiates you from the materialistic pleasures and you stay in constant bliss. You multiply your happiness by helping others, being calm and caring. This kind of happiness cannot be bought with money.

Needs V/S Wants

Life is very simple but we make it complicated. The basic rule of life includes ‘Needs and Wants’. The things which are basics for human survival like food, clothes, shelter etc are the needs. Sufficient money, electricity, education, and transport can also be counted as needs in modern day life. Once a man fulfils his basic needs, he doesn’t stop there, he desires for more. A salary hike, a better home in the city, expensive clothes, luxury vehicle and when he crosses this stage he wants even more like a world tour, a luxury villa and new hobbies like golf, sailing, etc.

So basically wants are never ending and if the happiness is dependent on these factors then it’s really hard to imagine that one will get happiness because he/she will be always indulged in acquiring more and more. It is good to be ambitious and money can be a good driving force to lead a comfortable life but when one becomes greedy and selfish then the ultimate goals of life are replaced with materialistic things. An achievement does bring happiness but for a short span. We work hard for years to achieve something but it vanishes in few days or months.

Is Money Important?

It will be wrong to say that money is not important. Just imagine, you are travelling somewhere with your family. In this journey, your goal is the journey itself and not the destination. That journey with family is the happiness but the fuel required to run the car throughout the journey requires money. If the fuel tank dries, you can still drive it on a slope but that will be risky. Human life also works the same way, money is essential to run the life and it is very difficult to survive without money. You struggle for happiness when earning money is the only goal in your life.

Happiness v/s Pleasure

You can acquire pleasure with money but actually you need a lot of money to buy pleasure. A wise man will not mix happiness with pleasure whereas a common man thinks pleasure as definitive happiness and at the end of the day he may find himself in depression, anger, loneliness but with a lot of money. There are several businessmen in India who earn in millions and can afford pleasures but they get happiness by doing social work and charity and that is the source of their happiness. Mr. Ratan Tata who is one of India’s top businessmen spends 60% of his earning to social service, NGO, and charity.

It should be noted that money is an essential part of modern life and one cannot survive without it but one should not make money as the sole source of happiness. Money can buy pleasures but not happiness and these two things should be kept different.

Money can’t buy Happiness 5 (600 words)

Happiness and honesty are some of the human attributes that cost nothing at all. As it is said, the best things in life are free and there are certain things in life where the currency has no value – like friends, family, and good memories.

True Happiness is Priceless

Some priceless possessions that are essential for happiness but cannot be bought are mentioned below:

  • An honest opinion from a loved one.
  • True friends who have your back.
  • A family you can always count on.
  • Humour and laughter
  • Having a positive attitude
  • Doing a good deed
  • The first time someone says, “I love you.”
  • Quality time with your loved ones.
  • Having someone listen to you intently.
  • The love of your children, family, and significant other.
  • Pushing one to achieve something great.

Happiness and Other Things Money Cannot Buy

Clearly, money cannot buy happiness. What else can money not buy?

Love : Money can buy attraction, power, and lust but it cannot buy love. Love is an emotion that can only be felt and experienced. It is something intimate, heartfelt and mysterious.

Truth : Money may be able to buy authority but the truth is most powerful of all. Sometimes money is exhausted to shove beliefs or an agenda and can even be used to generate unfair study to strengthen an opinion. Sometimes, people are able to hide the truth with the help of money but not for long. In the end, no matter how much money is spent on forging the truth it will always be exposed.

Time : You will never get back the time you have spent. Each minute that has passed will never return. Despite so much scientific and medical advancements, there is no way that we can reverse the time or extend our life. No amount of money can turn the clock back so we should live our life to the fullest, work hard and enjoy what we have.

Peace: It has been seen that the wealthier a person, the less peace of mind he possesses. Money cannot buy you peace. Many individuals have spent countless amount of money to establish inner peace and this vast sum of money has never been able to come close to what we could define as peaceful. Peace does not depend on your bank statement. It depends on how you train your mind and set your expectations.

Talent : Money can certainly help you to enhance and develop a talent within you but you won’t be able to purchase talent or skill. Besides inborn talent, there is a zest to learn and gain knowledge to nurture a skill or talent. All this cannot be purchased with any amount of money.

These are all essential components of happiness!

“Money has never made a man happy and nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness”. A precious and priceless asset, happiness is something no sum of money can ever buy. It is doubtlessly treasured more than any material item you possess.

Can Money Really Buy Happiness?

Money and happiness are related—but not in the way you think..

Updated November 10, 2023 | Reviewed by Chloe Williams

  • More money is linked to increased happiness, some research shows.
  • People who won the lottery have greater life satisfaction, even years later.
  • Wealth is not associated with happiness globally; non-material things are more likely to predict wellbeing.
  • Money, in and of itself, cannot buy happiness, but it can provide a means to the things we value in life.

Money is a big part of our lives, our identities, and perhaps our well-being. Sometimes, it can feel like your happiness hinges on how much cash is in your bank account. Have you ever thought to yourself, “If only I could increase my salary by 12 percent, I’d feel better”? How about, “I wish I had an inheritance. How easier life would be!” I don’t blame you — I’ve had the same thoughts many times.

But what does psychological research say about the age-old question: Can money really buy happiness? Let’s take a brutally honest exploration of how money and happiness are (and aren’t) related. (Spoiler alert: I’ve got bad news, good news, and lots of caveats.)

Higher earners are generally happier

Over 10 years ago, a study based on Gallup Poll data on 1,000 people made a big headline in the news. It found that people with higher incomes report being happier... but only up to an annual income of $75,000 (equivalent to about $90,000 today). After this point, a high emotional well-being wasn’t directly correlated to more money. This seemed to show that once a persons’ basic (and some “advanced”) needs are comfortably met, more money isn’t necessary for well-being.

Shift Drive / Shutterstock

But a new 2021 study of over one million participants found that there’s no such thing as an inflection point where more money doesn’t equal more happiness, at least not up to an annual salary of $500,000. In this study, participants’ well-being was measured in more detail. Instead of being asked to remember how well they felt in the past week, month, or year, they were asked how they felt right now in the moment. And based on this real-time assessment, very high earners were feeling great.

Similarly, a Swedish study on lottery winners found that even after years, people who won the lottery had greater life satisfaction, mental health, and were more prepared to face misfortune like divorce , illness, and being alone than regular folks who didn’t win the lottery. It’s almost as if having a pile of money made those things less difficult to cope with for the winners.

Evaluative vs. experienced well-being

At this point, it's important to suss out what researchers actually mean by "happiness." There are two major types of well-being psychologists measure: evaluative and experienced. Evaluative well-being refers to your answer to, “How do you think your life is going?” It’s what you think about your life. Experienced well-being, however, is your answer to, “What emotions are you feeling from day to day, and in what proportions?” It is your actual experience of positive and negative emotions.

In both of these studies — the one that found the happiness curve to flatten after $75,000 and the one that didn't — the researchers were focusing on experienced well-being. That means there's a disagreement in the research about whether day-to-day experiences of positive emotions really increase with higher and higher incomes, without limit. Which study is more accurate? Well, the 2021 study surveyed many more people, so it has the advantage of being more representative. However, there is a big caveat...

Material wealth is not associated with happiness everywhere in the world

If you’re not a very high earner, you may be feeling a bit irritated right now. How unfair that the rest of us can’t even comfort ourselves with the idea that millionaires must be sad in their giant mansions!

But not so fast.

Yes, in the large million-person study, experienced well-being (aka, happiness) did continually increase with higher income. But this study only included people in the United States. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that our culture is quite materialistic, more so than other countries, and income level plays a huge role in our lifestyle.

Another study of Mayan people in a poor, rural region of Yucatan, Mexico, did not find the level of wealth to be related to happiness, which the participants had high levels of overall. Separately, a Gallup World Poll study of people from many countries and cultures also found that, although higher income was associated with higher life evaluation, it was non-material things that predicted experienced well-being (e.g., learning, autonomy, respect, social support).

Earned wealth generates more happiness than inherited wealth

More good news: For those of us with really big dreams of “making it” and striking it rich through talent and hard work, know that the actual process of reaching your dream will not only bring you cash but also happiness. A study of ultra-rich millionaires (net worth of at least $8,000,000) found that those who earned their wealth through work and effort got more of a happiness boost from their money than those who inherited it. So keep dreaming big and reaching for your entrepreneurial goals … as long as you’re not sacrificing your actual well-being in the pursuit.

money can't buy happiness essay 200 words

There are different types of happiness, and wealth is better for some than others

We’ve been talking about “happiness” as if it’s one big thing. But happiness actually has many different components and flavors. Think about all the positive emotions you’ve felt — can we break them down into more specifics? How about:

  • Contentment
  • Gratefulness

...and that's just a short list.

It turns out that wealth may be associated with some of these categories of “happiness,” specifically self-focused positive emotions such as pride and contentment, whereas less wealthy people have more other-focused positive emotions like love and compassion.

In fact, in the Swedish lottery winners study, people’s feelings about their social well-being (with friends, family, neighbors, and society) were no different between lottery winners and regular people.

Money is a means to the things we value, not happiness itself

One major difference between lottery winners and non-winners, it turns out, is that lottery winners have more spare time. This is the thing that really makes me envious , and I would hypothesize that this is the main reason why lottery winners are more satisfied with their life.

Consider this simply: If we had the financial security to spend time on things we enjoy and value, instead of feeling pressured to generate income all the time, why wouldn’t we be happier?

This is good news. It’s a reminder that money, in and of itself, cannot literally buy happiness. It can buy time and peace of mind. It can buy security and aesthetic experiences, and the ability to be generous to your family and friends. It makes room for other things that are important in life.

In fact, the researchers in that lottery winner study used statistical approaches to benchmark how much happiness winning $100,000 brings in the short-term (less than one year) and long-term (more than five years) compared to other major life events. For better or worse, getting married and having a baby each give a bigger short-term happiness boost than winning money, but in the long run, all three of these events have the same impact.

What does this mean? We make of our wealth and our life what we will. This is especially true for the vast majority of the world made up of people struggling to meet basic needs and to rise out of insecurity. We’ve learned that being rich can boost your life satisfaction and make it easier to have positive emotions, so it’s certainly worth your effort to set goals, work hard, and move towards financial health.

But getting rich is not the only way to be happy. You can still earn health, compassion, community, love, pride, connectedness, and so much more, even if you don’t have a lot of zeros in your bank account. After all, the original definition of “wealth” referred to a person’s holistic wellness in life, which means we all have the potential to be wealthy... in body, mind, and soul.

Happiness Essay

Happiness is a feeling that is challenging to put into words. It is a surreal experience that can only be felt. It is one of the most important amenities for living a blissful life. Every individual has a different perspective on the term "happiness." Some believe that having a good bank balance is what happiness is, while others believe that being in a happy relationship is true happiness. Here are a few sample essays on happiness.

Happiness Essay

100 Word Essay On Happiness

Happiness is a feeling you experience internally . True happiness also originates from within you. Happiness is essentially a mental state. It can be accomplished by thinking positively and keeping everything negative out of your head. It is a mental state in which one has the full and satisfying sensation that their heart is truly at peace; it is not simply about money or prosperity. Positive emotions not only make us feel good, but they also benefit our bodies and minds. Our immune system is strengthened, stress hormones are reduced, and anxiety and despair are lessened. Our happiness and well-being are greatly impacted by experiencing certain good feelings on a daily basis.

200 Word Essay On Happiness

Happiness is still a rare feeling, despite the fact that everyone longs for it. It is a blissful state, and in order to achieve it, your mind must be trained. The reason for this is that your mind accepts whatever you tell it. Many philosophers have offered various perspectives on this, but the most persuasive one is that happiness comes from within and shouldn't be sought after in the outside world.

You can attract happiness into your life in a few different ways.

Being in the present | You must live in the present. Reminiscing about the past will only keep you from having fun, so try to put it behind you. Don't worry too much about the future. Make the most of the moment you're in.

Develop optimistic thinking | Positive thoughts cause positive things to happen in your life, and happiness is attracted to happy things. So make an effort to stop thinking negatively and think positively.

Enjoy Contentment | One of the most important factors in achieving happiness is contentment. In a variety of situations that arise in your life, you shouldn't become overly excited or depressed. In every situation, try to maintain your composure.

We have the capacity to create happiness for ourselves through the use of happy feelings, which can only be attained through thinking happy thoughts and maintaining a happy attitude.

500 Words Essay On Happiness

Happiness is a way of life , not something that can be achieved. It is something that people chase their entire lives but never truly find. They have been taught to think that obtaining a good or secure job, admission to a prestigious university, or finding a devoted partner will make them happy. These things are unquestionably necessary for living a good life, but they alone cannot bring true happiness.

My Happiness

I can still clearly recall living with my grandmother back when she was still alive. In my entire family, she was one of the best cooks. She used to ask me to pick up some of her recipes so I could use them in the future. Some of the best native cuisines I prepare are learned with her assistance. After school, when I was accepted into college, my friends asked me to prepare their favourite dishes. I was initially anxious, but I knew I could succeed just like my grandmother. I was delighted when I succeeded in making the dish and received praise for it. You can see that being happy doesn't require much; all you need to do is be self-assured, have a positive outlook, and approach every obstacle you encounter in life in this way. As a result, it is clear that you are the source of your own happiness. True happiness can only be attained by someone who is able to realise this.

Aristotle's Philosophy Of Happiness

As a philosopher, Aristotle ranks among the best . He held the view that we are responsible for our own happiness. He asserts that happiness is the only reason for living. He claimed that virtue determines happiness and that it is a goal in and of itself. He believes that in order to live a happy life, many requirements must be met, including being in good physical and mental health. According to him, the majority of our desires—whether they be for favourable relationships, wealth, success, or power—come from our conviction that they will make us happy. To put it another way, happiness is the goal and everything else is just a means to get there.

Money Can't Buy Happiness

Happiness is frequently linked to financial success. If this were the case, then wealthy people would never have experienced sadness. The wealthy, on the other hand, exhibit greater levels of stress, anxiety, and worry. They also frequently experience relationship issues and depression. However, people from lower or middle-class backgrounds are frequently happier and more carefree.

Being wealthy is not necessarily a bad thing, though. Access to a wide range of resources is made possible by having money. However, it is incorrect to think that having all of these things will make you happy. Short-term happiness can be temporarily brought on by material possessions, but lasting happiness cannot be attained this way.

We hold ourselves to a standard that is unreal. When this happens, we begin to value material possessions and judge ourselves against others. Our emotions, however, are solely the product of our thoughts. We, therefore, need to work on developing positive thoughts and a positive outlook on life, as these things would ultimately lead to genuine happiness.

Essay on Money And Happiness

Students are often asked to write an essay on Money And Happiness in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Money And Happiness

Understanding money.

Money is like the coins and notes we use to buy things. It’s important because it helps us get what we need, like food and a place to live. People work to earn money, and they use it to pay for goods and services.

Can Money Buy Happiness?

Some people think having a lot of money makes you happy. It can buy toys, games, and vacations. But happiness isn’t just about things you can buy. It’s also about love, friendship, and good memories.

Happiness Without Money

True happiness often comes from non-money things like playing with friends, family hugs, and laughing. These moments create joy that lasts longer than the happiness from buying something.

Balance is Key

It’s good to have money for what we need. But it’s also important to enjoy simple pleasures. Finding a balance between money and happiness is like having enough ice cream: too little is sad, but too much can also make you sick.

250 Words Essay on Money And Happiness

Money’s role in happiness.

Many people believe that having a lot of money can make them happy. It’s true that money can buy things we need and want. With enough money, we can have a comfortable house, good food, and fun toys. It also lets us do things like travel and go to movies, which can make us feel joyful.

But Does Money Guarantee Happiness?

The answer is not so simple. After we have enough money for basic needs, extra money doesn’t always mean extra happiness. Think about it like a favorite dessert: the first bite is delicious, but after a while, you can’t eat anymore. Similarly, once we have enough money, more of it doesn’t make us much happier.

Other Important Things for Happiness

Happiness isn’t just about money. It’s also about having friends, family, and good health. Playing with friends, spending time with family, and running around outside can make us very happy. These things don’t need a lot of money but are very valuable for our happiness.

Money as a Tool

We should think of money as a tool. It can help us get things that make life easier and more fun. But it’s not the only thing that creates happiness. Being kind, having good relationships, and enjoying simple pleasures are also key to feeling happy.

In conclusion, money can help with happiness, but it’s not the whole story. Being with loved ones and taking care of our health are just as important. Remember, smiles are free, and often, they are the best sign of happiness.

500 Words Essay on Money And Happiness

Understanding money and happiness.

Many people talk about how important money is, and others say happiness is the key to life. But what is the real connection between money and being happy? This essay will explore the relationship between these two things in a simple way.

Money is like a tool, something you use to buy things you need or want. Just like a hammer helps you build a house, money helps you get food, a place to live, clothes, and toys. It’s easy to think that having more money means you can buy more things, and that will make you happier. To some extent, this is true because if you don’t have enough money for basic needs, life can be very hard and stressful.

Happiness Beyond Basics

Once you have enough money for the basics, like food and a safe home, having extra money doesn’t always make you a lot happier. This is because happiness often comes from things that you can’t buy with money. For example, spending time with family and friends, playing outside, and doing things you love can make you feel happy, and they don’t always need money.

The Limits of Money

Even though money can buy lots of things, it can’t buy everything. For example, money can’t buy love or friendship. You can’t use money to make someone care about you or to have a true friend. Also, if you focus too much on getting money, you might miss out on fun times with people you care about.

Being Wise with Money

Being smart about how you use money is important. If you only buy things you really need or that will truly make you happy, you can save your money for important things in the future, like education or adventures. Also, sharing your money by helping others can make you feel good inside, which is a special kind of happiness.

Money Can’t Solve Everything

Sometimes, no matter how much money you have, there are problems that money can’t fix. If you’re feeling sad or have a problem with a friend, buying something new might make you feel better for a little while, but it won’t fix the real problem. Talking to someone you trust, like a parent or teacher, can help more than spending money.

Finding Balance

The secret is finding a balance between having enough money to take care of your needs and finding happiness in things that don’t cost money. It’s like having a cake – money can buy the ingredients, but the fun of baking and eating it with friends is where the real happiness is.

In the end, money is important because it helps us live comfortably and gives us a chance to do things we enjoy. But it’s not the only thing that makes us happy. Real happiness often comes from love, friendship, and doing things that make us feel proud and excited. So, while money is a helpful tool, it’s not the only path to happiness. Remember, the best things in life aren’t things you can buy, but moments you share with others and experiences that make you smile.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Can Money Buy You Happiness? Essay

I believe that money can buy a person happiness due to several reasons related to the costs of comfortable and healthy living. These costs include housing, medicine, and meaningful experience, which improve the quality of life. Despite the fact that luxury is often seen as an attractive point in favor of happiness via increased budget or spending, it is not necessary for well-being. Some researchers propose that happiness is dependent on the living standards and the perception of living circumstances, this is a theory of comparison (Muresan et al.). On the other hand, it is also possible to perceive happiness as the satisfaction of personal needs (Muresan et al.). Nevertheless, multiple factors are crucial to form a happy life which need to be reviewed in detail.

First of all, given that happiness is related to the satisfaction of personal needs, there is also a need to consider the essential need of human life such as housing, medicine, and food. These expenditures are continuous throughout human life. In order to be healthy, one needs medication and medical expertise to ensure long life without illnesses. Electricity and water bills need to be paid to ensure comfortable life at home, which includes cleanness, cooking, and entertainment in the form of TV programs or the Internet. Moreover, technological development led to the digitalization of numerous jobs and created the opportunity to interact with anyone despite the distance. This is essential because, without a job, there’s no source of income to pay the described bills, and connection with family and friends is known to improve life satisfaction and address humans’ social needs.

Other personal needs are often related to the purchase of things and meaningful or memorable experiences. It is well-known that a good experience may improve a person’s mood, resulting in satisfaction with life (Mogilner et al.). These experiences vary due to human individuality but are often connected to romance, socialization, personal development. Romance refers to the maintenance of a romantic relationship with a loved person. This indirectly incurs additional costs such as future marriage organization, dates, and small gifts, which contribute to the improvement of the mood. It is widely accepted that personal development leads to satisfaction with one-self. Personal development is related to the acquisition of new skills and broadening of one’s horizon or accumulation of knowledge. The services of trainers and teachers coupled with the purchase of books are not free and considered as spending outside of basic living needs. Furthermore, buying time or expenditures to free oneself from daily chores or unmeaningful but necessary tasks contribute to personal well-being (Mogilner et al.). Numerous researchers found that money spent on buying time alleviates time stress, and people who utilize these services feel happier (Mogilner et al.).

Living standards vary from country to country due to the differences in economic conditions. Consequently, higher living standards refer to higher costs for basic needs. The theory of comparison suggests that an increase in a personal income would not lead to a significant increase in happiness, given that the income of others would similarly increase. Nevertheless, studies identified that a certain threshold exists after which the effect of income on happiness is significantly reduced. For example, in the US, it is equal to 75 000$ (Mogilner et al.), while in Europe, it is close to 35 000$ (Muresan et al.). This demonstrates that an excessive increase in income is not necessary for well-being. Simultaneously, it points to the fact that below this threshold, people are not as satisfied with life and happy as they could have been.

In conclusion, money can buy happiness but only if spent correctly. The correct spending of money involves improvement and maintenance of life via memorable experiences, meaningful things, and satisfaction of basic needs. Moreover, it is not necessary to have an excessive amount of money certain threshold exists, which demonstrates that money cannot amount to complete happiness but attributes to its significant portion.

Money Can't Buy Happiness Essay

  • 3 Works Cited

Since man invented money, the question has been asked: Can money buy happiness? Recently, research has given us a much better understanding of the relationship between what we earn and how we feel. Economists have been studying the links between income and happiness across nations, and psychologists have performed innumerable studies to discover our true feelings about money. Studies consistently show that people who agree with statements like “You will buy things just because you want them,” tend to be less satisfied with life, less happy, and more likely to be depressed. But, just like studies examining the connection between success and happiness , many of the findings are correlational. As a result we can’t say for sure that …show more content…

Then, after about a week, the same participants were given back their own descriptions of their purchases and asked to reflect on it. Again, they were asked to report on their feelings in the moment. Comparing these two groups provided a way of comparing how participants felt about two different types of purchases. The results showed that participants felt better when they were contemplating their experiential purchases than their material purchases. Thinking about experience As a result of this experiment, Van Boven & Gilovich predicted that people spend more time overall contemplating their experiential rather than material purchases. To test this out they asked participants to think about experiential and material purchases they were particularly happy with. Then they were asked which they thought about more often. The results clearly showed it was the experiential purchases people thought about more often (83%). Why do experiences fare better than possessions? It seems, then, that at some level we understand that our experiential purchases give us more pleasure than our material purchases. But why is that? Van Boven (2005) suggests three reasons: 1. Experiences improve with time (possessions don’t). The reason why experiences improve with time may be because it is possible to think about experiences in a more abstract manner than possessions. For example if you think back to a fantastic summer from your youth, you might

Robert Biswas-Diner's Essay Can Money Buy Happiness?

How often do you wake up worrying about money? How often do your loved ones worry about money? How often have you heard, “if only I had the money?” How often do you feel that more money would solve all your problems and would make you happy? What if I told you that you were right, to an extent. Author’s across the discussion of happiness have tried to answer the simply stated, yet complicatedly answered question, “Can Money Buy Happiness?” Authors Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diner attempt to answer the question in their piece of the same name, by explaining that “Yes, money buys happiness…but it must be considered in the bigger picture of what makes people genuinely rich” (Biswas-Diener 160-161). This idea that fiscal wealth is a path to happiness

Washed Away By Geoff Williams: Can Money Buy Happiness?

Does Money Buy Happiness? Studies over the last 10 years have shown that life experiences gives people lasting happiness and memories. There are two types of happiness: the measure of the quality of one's life, and how often one experiences positive emotions such as joy and affection. People in the top quartile for annual income have self-reported higher quality of life happiness than those in the bottom quartile, but about the same emotional happiness. Money can be used to purchase things ranging from physical objects to an experience.

Summary Of Assuming Passion By Laurence Shames

In the world buying the things you want compared to buying the things you need is a consist problem for many people in America. Depending on a person’s financial situation, they might never be able to buy the things they want and just focus on the things they need. Most middle class Americans focus on paying for essential things such as: food, water, housing, and transport. My views towards consumerism is that people should focus on quality overbecause there are some moments in life that lower quality things will have negative effects.

Elizabeth Dunn And Michael Norton's Happy Money

The first point presented is experiencing things rather than buying merchandise. In explanation, if someone were to buy a watch it will be this great new thing for a short period of time then one will get used to it. The author says pick things that won’t let one adapt to it so quickly. Instead, someone could go on a trip and have that memory in the back of their head and could always refer back to whenever they wanted. Second, make money a treat.

Case Study 2: Flat Tummy Co.

Another commonality amongst our findings was that we found most people question their purchases after they’ve been bought. Regardless of the item, whether it is a fishing rod or makeup, almost all of our interviewees all mentioned having a feeling of guilt for purchasing an impulse buy that was stimulated from a selfie used in marketing.

However, with ease of purchase and easier returns people are less interested in the experience in a store but the convenience of the transaction and in the end satisfaction. “Retail stores used to be places where merchants would assemble an array of product they've selected for their consumers. That was important because consumers had nowhere else where they could see such a broad array of products” (Kestenbaum 2017). No longer do we care about the sale of an item and how well someone can talk about it. We can easily use the internet to find all of the reviews we could want without ever stepping out of our own homes let alone into a retail store. The consumer wants different things now. They are focused on unique items that are often locally made. The customer wants something that will create a moment or specific emotion whereas generations past have been more focused on a name brand and what may have been main stream or the best of the

The Futile Pursuit of Happiness Essay

When it comes to predicting how something will make you feel in the future, you will most likely be wrong. In the book Discovering Pop Culture, edited by Anna Romasino, is the article “The Futile Pursuit of Happiness”. In the article, author Jon Gertner talks about how people think certain things bring them happiness but aren’t as fulfilling as they may think. Gertner gives examples by writing about four men that have been questioning how people predict what will make them happy and how they feel after it happens. Among these men are a psychology professor Daniel Gilbert, psychologist Tim Wilson, economist George Loewenstein, and psychologist Daniel Kahneman. Gertner uses facts from scores of

Essay On Happiness In America

Although Americans do look better and feel better with the extravagant items they purchase, money doesn’t buy happiness for long term goals. Like many will argue, like Atlantic senior editor Derek Thompson did in his 2013 article, “Yes, Money Does Buy Happiness: 6 Lessons on the Newest Research on Income and Well-Being,” money can only buy happiness for short term goals; it won’t last very long for everyone and it could lead to worse scenarios when the money is gone. Thompson (2013) included statistics on richer countries that are proven to be happier, explaining, “First, the lines go up. More money, more happiness. Second, the lines go up in parallel, more or less. Across language, culture, religion, ethnic background, the same amount of extra money seems to buy the similar amount of extra happiness.” Thompson (2013) found the same similar pattern in many other countries and concluded that they are more happy than poorer countries. Although poorer countries don’t have as many resources or many things like richer countries do, Seth Borenstein, in his 2017 article for The Independent, “Norway Beats Denmark to be Named the Happiest Country in the World by the UN,” can beg to differ. Borenstein (2017) says, “While most countries were either getting happier or at least treading water, America's happiness score dropped 5 per cent over the past decade” (Borenstein, 2017). That shows that America, one of the richest

can money buy happiness Essay

In today’s materialistic world, the phrase that ‘money can’t buy happiness’ is tending to be proved hence otherwise. Social research and surveys have shown results based on an individuals income, health and the political scenario which is dominant in his or her region. It is quite obvious that the gap between the privileged and the not so is growing into a great divide giving rise to different class and status, thus defining ones social circle. It should therefore be understood how an individuals economic status affects their personal happiness throughout all aspects of life. Many tend to refer to this age-old quote especially when they tend to belong to sector of people who can’t afford the modern day luxuries of life. What they do not

Money And Happiness Essay : Can Money Can Buy Happiness?

Everyone wants to live a happy life. Even those people that hate everything about everyone. The trick is how to get that wanted happiness. Is money a way to achieve this happiness? People, philosophers, professors, and ordinary, everyday people have been pondering this age-old question about the relationship between money and happiness and if money can buy happiness for a very long time. Much research and many surveys have been asked and performed by excited researchers and agog economists. A lot of experiments and presentations galore were rendered by inquisitive University professors and intrigued university undergraduates to provide useful data. As it turns out, money can and will buy happiness for everyone that spends it at the right time and on the right things.

Landau states that “more money does not necessarily buy more happiness, but less money is associated with emotional pain” meaning money is materialistic and in the long run will not effect long term happiness (Landau 2). Money will buy you something materialistic that will be temporary in your life but after time fades you will eventually get bored until you find something new although it might have left you with some good memories and experience.

Happiness And Happiness Essay : What Makes Happiness?

Happiness. What makes people happy? Is it meeting up with friends and family? Getting a new job? Having a good hair day? Receiving an A on a test? Sure, many people may agree that these few examples bring joy, however money is something that will assure happiness. Some people may argue that too much money teaches people to be entitled or spoiled, and not enough money can ruin one’s life. However, having a moderate amount of money in one’s life will fulfill everyone’s needs in order to bring joy and pleasure to all. A quote found online said, “They say money can’t buy you happiness. I say hand me 100 dollars, you can watch me smile” (Anonymous). It is pretty safe to say that almost everyone would be ecstatic to take the 100 dollars handed over rather than mourning and being sad after receiving the cash. Everyone views their own happiness in unique ways however, money certainly causes happiness in people's lives by representing success, sharing wealth, and improving an individual's state of well being.
