Our timetable is designed in such as format that we could visit the library twice a week and explore books apart from our syllabus. My school library has autobiographies, picture books, comics, novels, fictional books, books on culture, art, and craft, and many other materials. The Oklahoma Center for the Book in the Oklahoma Department of Libraries coordinates the My Favorite Book statewide writing competition for students in fourth through twelfth grades. Oklahoma students are eligible to participate in the competition. Students write a letter to the author of a favorite book, book series, short story or essay and explain how the literature or one of the characters impacted their life.

Contest Levels: Level 1: Grades 4–6 Level 2: Grades 7–8 Level 3: Grades 9–12

Cash Prizes are awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in each level.

First Place: $500 Second Place: $250 Third Place: $100

First place winners select their school library or public library to receive a cash prize of $1,000 !

Maintaining silence in our school library is important, especially in the reading section. The reading section of my school library has long tables and chairs arranged on both sides. I sit with my friend, and sometimes we read each other’s books. Our librarian has a great knowledge of books and helps us pick our favourite magazine, novel, or newspaper. She maintains all the data very carefully too. We can issue books on our school library card. The issued book must be returned after a week in the same condition as it was issued.

Writing an essay on ‘My School Library’ will benefit children. They will gain knowledge about the importance of visiting the library. My favourite libraries.

Libraries have always been among my favourite places. The very first library I visited was the West Scranton Branch of the Scranton Public Library. It was housed in a stately old house right across the street from my family’s church. It was there that I wrote my first paper, an essay on Benjamin Franklin. I submitted the paper to the annual Daughters of the American Revolution historical essay contest when I was ten or eleven years old. The paper made the first cut. Then I had to recite it from memory in front of the panel of DAR judges. I still cherish the medal I received for that paper and its recital. My ancestors did not travel over on the Mayflower.

My grandparents came over on four separate boats at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, emigrants from Italy. Their children were determined that their sons and daughters would get the most out of the public education system, and where better to extend that education than in the local library. That library is long gone, replaced by apartment buildings and parking spaces. I outgrew it when I entered high school and began to visit the main library, Albright Memorial, in the centre of the city’s government and cultural district. The Gothic Revival building was where I spent many Saturday afternoons doing research for my English, History and Social Studies papers. The second floor reading room is one of those spaces that occupies a corner of my memory as a cosy place to be. During the seven years I spent at Princeton University, first as an undergraduate and then as a graduate student studying architecture and urban planning, Firestone Library was where I spent the second most amount of time. First was the Architecture School, where all-nighters were common. The main reading room was a wonderful place to study. It is an expansive space, but being surrounded by other students who all appeared to be determined to make the Dean’s List for the first time, or stay on it, was an inspiration. When it came time to write my senior and Master’s Theses, there were individual study rooms that provided the kind of isolation needed for a concentrated effort.

During the seventeen years I lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area, the Boston Public Library was a steady visiting point. This was well before the Internet, so if there was research that needed to be done, it was done in the library. McKim, Mead and White’s design had provided the spaces, and the dedicated librarians provided the content. As the third largest library by number of volumes in the United States, after the Library of Congress and Harvard University Library, there was nothing that could not be found if one was willing to spend the time needed. Just visiting Copley Square was a treat, with H.H. Richardson’s Trinity Church across the broad, open plaza from the library, and the Copley Plaza Hotel framing the third side with Boylston Street completing the frame.

Erik Gunnar Asplund’s Stockholm Public library is a real pearl, both inside and out. It is a cylinder surrounded on three sides by long, rectangular shapes, and sits on a knoll at the northern edge of the inner city. It was opened in 1928, and remains one of the great Swedish architect’s masterpieces. Its terra cotta-colored forms serve as one of the capital’s orientation landmarks. What is most extraordinary about this building is the light that filters through the clerestory at the top of the cylinder into the book stacks that line the inside of the cylinder and then finds its way into the reading room below. My father, Lawrence Sena, captured the soul of this building in one of his best oil paintings which he completed from a photograph I supplied. Several years later, in 1982, he and my mother visited Stockholm and he was able to see the building with his own eyes.

Located on Copley Square in the Back Bay of Boston, it shares the square with H.H. Richardson’s Trinity Church (1877), the Fairmont Copley Plaze Hotel, and the mirror glass-clad John Hancock Tower designed by I.M. Pei. and opened in 1976 on the 200th anniversary of the United States of America.

During the eighteen years that we lived in the Göteborg region, this library was my office-away-from-the-office. It offered a perfect place to work right in the center of the cultural heart of the city. It was newly renovated and expanded in 2014.

The Bacon Free Library in South Natick, Massachusetts was established in 1880. It continues to provide community library services and programs for the surrounding residents today. Located in the center of the village and situated along the bank of the Charles River, is has been my little work oasis where I retrieve e-mails before and after my visits to my good friends who live a short distance away.

12 Authors Write About the Libraries They Love

For most readers and writers — and book lovers in general — the library holds a special place of honor and respect. We asked several authors to tell us about their local public library or to share a memory of a library from their past.

The first library I knew was an upstairs room over a storefront in my little Kentucky town, with a librarian who didn’t approve of children handling books. (I begged; she relented.) The second was a van kitted out with bookshelves and sent out on the rounds of our rural county, a godsend to children and many adults who had no easy way of getting to town. The Bookmobile was the whole world parked on my gravel road. It came once a month, and we were allowed only three books at a time, but the Bookmobile lady had a heart. She let me check out as many as I could carry.

Everywhere I’ve gone since, I’ve found libraries. Those of us launched from bare-bones schools in uncelebrated places will always find particular grace in a library, where the temple doors are thrown wide to all believers, regardless of pedigree. Nowadays I have the normal professional reliance on internet research, but my heart still belongs to the church of the original source. Every book I’ve written has some magic in it I found in physical stacks or archives.

Or the facade, in the case of my first novel. The library I frequented in Tucson was draped in wisteria with long, dangling pods: the bean trees. For my latest, it was a cache of letters Charles Darwin wrote to a lady scientist in Vineland, N.J. Once it was a very old Kikongo-English dictionary I found in the University of Arizona library’s special collections. It wasn’t supposed to leave the room, but I am persuasive. I said, “Something good could happen if you let me borrow this book.” I took it home; a novel called “The Poisonwood Bible” happened.

This is my thank-you note to every librarian who’s ever helped a kid like me, nobody from nowhere, find her doorway through a library shelf into citizenship of the world. If one of them ever begs you to bend the rules, I’m going to say: Let her do it.

Only in St. Louis

These are some of the things you can do at the St. Louis County libraries: check out books; check out a ukulele or banjo; take Coding 101 classes (if you’re a kid); earn a high school diploma online (if you’re an adult); eat a free lunch in the summer, including pizza on Fridays.

These are some of the things I personally have done at the St. Louis County Library headquarters, located in a suburb across from a shopping mall: celebrated the publication of my two most recent books by giving readings; had my picture taken for a magazine article; attended readings by Colson Whitehead, Emily Giffin, Ron Suskind, Tracy Chevalier, George Hodgman, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and many other authors.

Two of my peak St. Louis experiences — as in the most intensely St. Louisiest — occurred at the county library headquarters. In 2007, when we’d been living here just a few months, my then-fiancé and now-husband and I attended a reading by Jonathan Franzen. To some in the book world, Franzen is a talented curmudgeon. To St. Louisans, he is a hometown boy made good, and we are very proud of him.

At Franzen’s 2007 event, he read an essay about selling his parents’ house, located in a neighborhood just a few miles away from where he stood. During the Q. and A. session, it emerged that quite a few people in the audience knew Franzen or his family and perhaps even made cameos in his nonfiction. I was filled with a good and surprising feeling: Because I now live in St. Louis, I thought, I will have experiences, including literary experiences, that I wouldn’t have if I lived elsewhere.

Ten years later, I was invited to conduct an onstage interview that was also a library fund-raiser with another beloved native son: the actor Jon Hamm. More than 800 people, about 95 percent of whom were women, were crammed into chairs set up in the space usually occupied by bookshelves, and those of us who weren’t already smitten with Hamm before he spoke certainly were after. He was charming and funny and unreasonably handsome as he acknowledged that St. Louis is a city with both serious problems and many wonderful qualities. This past August, I moved to Minneapolis. But that hunch I’d had a decade before, in the very same building, had been borne out: In the library and elsewhere, because I lived in St. Louis, I have had experiences I wouldn’t have had if I lived elsewhere.

If There’s a Heaven, It’s a Library

When I was a boy, in the school holidays, from the age of 7, my parents would drop me at the local library on their way to work. It was a ritual, and it was why I loved the holidays. The library was a red brick building on the London Road in East Grinstead.

In the beginning, I would head for the children’s library, in the back, open the card index, which listed books by subject, and explore ghosts or magic, time travel or space. I would find a book I liked, and read everything by the author. I discovered that the librarians could, through the wonder of the interlibrary loan, get me books they did not have, and that they would. As far as the librarians were concerned, I was just another customer, and I was treated with a level of respect that I don’t recall getting anywhere else, even at school.

Eventually, I just started reading the children’s library alphabetically, working my way through it author by author. I cannot imagine being happier than that. I would walk home when the library closed at 6, and be home in time for dinner. It was a perfect arrangement, one marred only by hunger, so I would take a sandwich in a plastic bag, and grudgingly head outside to the parking lot to scoff it as quickly and efficiently as I could. Eating time was not reading time.

As I entered my teen years I had read the children’s library and so moved into the adult library. Nobody tried to stop me. I discovered that reading it alphabetically meant that I was encountering a number of very dull books indeed, so I started moving through looking for favorite authors — Brian Aldiss in the A’s, Ursula K. Le Guin in the G’s, R. A. Lafferty in the L’s and so on. By this time I was walking to the library in the morning, walking home at night when they closed. It was still my favorite place in the world. They knocked it down and built a new library when I was 17, and now that library too is gone.

Librarians sometimes discourage me from telling this story. They point out that libraries should not be seen or used as child-minding services, and that feral children should be discouraged from raising themselves in the shelves and the stacks. These things are true.

Still, if there is a heaven, one of the many mansions it must contain is a red brick Victorian building, all wood and shelves, waiting for me. And the shelves will be filled with books by beloved authors, as good as or better than the ones I knew. I will read my way through the adult library, and then, to attain perfect bliss, I will enter the children’s library, and never need to leave it. Not even to eat my sandwiches in the parking lot.

Free Meant Freedom

I was 6 when my father walked me to my first library, two blocks away from home, in Oakland, Calif. It was an old red brick building with fancy castle embellishments and gigantic double doors a child would not have been strong enough to push open. As I stood in the vast room, I felt tiny and timid. The only places I’d been with ceilings this high were the church and the hospital. The first provided provisos for entering heaven, and the other contained fever, pain and terror. This enormous room, I soon learned, was like a toy store where everything was free. My parents rarely bought children’s books. Why pay money for something that could be read in an hour and was then used up?

The children’s section was on the left closest to the tall gothic windows. The easiest books were on the bottom. Since I could already read, I knew I should choose books on higher shelves, the harder books. That would show I was smarter than other kids my age. I realize now this was evidence I knew the concept of competition and its consequences of either pride or shame. In my family, anything easy was not worth doing. But here, I was allowed to choose for myself and whatever was within those books would remain private.

My first library gave me the freedom to exist in private, to choose and even be greedy. I took 10 books the first time — illustrated books, fables, fairy tales and happy stories of white children and their kind parents. A week later, now initiated, I was allowed to walk to the library by myself, carrying the 10 books I had finished reading, knowing I could choose many more to furnish my vast secret room, my imagination, all mine.

On Being and Feeling Good

Books, Mama tells me before dropping me off at the Medgar Evers Library, are portals into black survival in America. Mama believes if I can read, write and master everything white Mississippians deem literary, I will be more likely to anticipate and evade the worst parts of my state, and the most terrifying parts of my country.

I am 10 years old and this makes little sense to me.

No matter what time of the day, the Medgar Evers Library smells like damp carpet and sugar cane. There is a dusty little bowl of chewy, sugary orange slices at the librarian’s desk next to a sign that says “Just Say No.”

That sign makes me laugh.

To Mama and other grown folks in Jackson, Miss., libraries are training grounds. I train at home, where books line the wall. I train in the massive library on the campus of Jackson State University while Mama teaches political science classes. I train in a tiny library held up by cinderblocks at Holy Family Catholic School.

Compared to the libraries I usually train in, Medgar Evers is bare, but the prominently displayed books there are written by black authors.

There is a small section in the library focused on the work of Langston Hughes.

Mama thinks I’ve read every word of the books she assigns. The truth is that I’ve never read any book cover to cover except “Anansi the Spider.” Today, while I spread out on the floor next to the Highlight magazines, I read a book called “Langston Hughes: Poet of His People” cover to cover.

For the first time in my life, I am not rushing to turn a page. I reread passages I don’t understand. I reread passages I understand far too well. I check the book out so I can reread it when I get home.

Mama asks what I read when I get in the car. “Something that makes me good,” I tell her. “Something that makes me feel good.”

The Sun and the Moon

At the beach, the sunlit water is sapphire; the ghosts of spring breakers past still dance on tabletops.

But further inland, the library knows another Fort Lauderdale.

Seven years ago, I gave a reading at the main library. They served mint tea and baklava. Most of my book tour happened in bookstores, but in Fort Lauderdale the Borders had shuttered and the indies had dwindled away. So the library had stepped in to reclaim the town’s literary identity. Here were workshops and author appearances; each year they sponsored a book festival.

The downtown building stands near the railroad tracks that divide Florida’s east coast into economic and racial partitions. It attracts travelers, nomads, refugees from both sides of the tracks.

A few years after that first reading, my daughter and I met up on the library steps with some other parents and children. We were tired and hot, happy to get into air-conditioning.

There were the usual enticements — books of course, and computers, toys and a chess set of child-size pieces. Then we heard the library had a moon rock on display.

“From the actual moon?” the children cried.

We searched the library’s several floors before spotting a display. The rock was small, gray and unassuming.

“That’s it ?” someone asked.

But at bedtime that evening I reminded my daughter, “Just think, our library holds part of the moon.”

Wonder moved through her face; she nodded gravely. “Let’s go back tomorrow.”

When you hear “Fort Lauderdale,” literature might not be the first thing that springs to mind. In this land of tanned bodies and Jell-O shots, the library whispers. Free of charge, it offers us the weight of starlight, the light of the moon and the music of uninterrupted imagination.

A Place to Come Together

Twenty years ago, I lived in Lincoln, Vt., a little village that lost its library. Lincoln is a hill town of barely a thousand people halfway up Vermont’s fifth highest mountain, and while it gets its share of leaf peepers in the autumn, it’s a far cry from the picturesque hamlets that have ski resorts to entice tourists the rest of the year. But it has a general store that bakes mint chocolate brownies worth every calorie — and in 1998, it had a library the size of a living room that those of us who lived there cherished.

That summer, after four weeks of rain, the New Haven River overflowed its banks and flooded the library. Five feet of water poured in, destroying 80 percent of the collection and every single children’s book that wasn’t checked out, because those books were on the lowest shelves. The next day, as my neighbors piled the waterlogged books to be pulped, some were weeping.

I’ll always recall the sadness of life without a library. My daughter was 4 years old then, and a big part of our routine was walking there together and picking out books. I wasn’t alone. The whole village had PTSD, because a library is one of the only parts of a community that are comfortably multigenerational. There are children’s story hours and seniors doing yoga and middle school kids working on class projects.

But I also remember how, once the shock of the loss was behind us, we built a new library — with help from people across America. Readers in 38 states mailed us money. Others drove to Vermont from as far away as Pennsylvania with their cars packed with books. We didn’t ask for that: Strangers simply felt our pain and wanted to do something. Within two years, we had a spanking new library.

This summer I was chatting with Deborah Lundbech, the director of the community library in New Haven, Vt. “One of my greatest joys is connecting a reader with a book,” Lundbech told me. “The other day, we had an 11-year-old girl in here who was so excited that we had books five and six in the series she was reading.”

No one will confuse Vermont libraries with the New York Public Library, with its stone lions and 55 million catalog items. But they matter, even the ones the size of a living room. It’s not merely that libraries connect us to books. It’s that they connect us to one another.

Busy, but Calm

My nearest library is Port Townsend’s arts-and-crafts Carnegie, allied with the Jefferson County Library. Port Townsend on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is a working seaport noted for its coastal views, Victorian architecture, exquisite private gardens. For a century it has been the cultural anchor of the region, though, like all small towns, it has its warring factions. The town attracts people of highly varied interests — tourists, boat builders, savants, artists, mathematicians, horticulturists, musicians, scientists, bird watchers, organic farmers, filmmakers.

The Carnegie director, Melody Sky Eisler, is one of the new-style extrovert librarians: gregarious and welcoming. Studying art in Egypt years ago she had a visceral shock in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. In the Snohetta-designed architectural showpiece she asked about an empty niche and learned it was a memorial space where the ancient scrolls would have gone. She was moved by the power of a library that could still reverberate its value 2,000 years after it was destroyed — so moved she shifted her studies from art to library science.

The muscular Port Townsend library is nonstop busy from opening to the last exit of the day, checking out not only books, but craft kits, movies, magazines, music DVDs. It seems most of Port Townsend’s population daily courses through the building. Like other libraries it is also a pass-through place for transients. But upstairs the beautiful and calm old reading room remains as it was a hundred years ago.

One reason for the library’s success is the town’s population. A characteristic of Port Townsend is citizen involvement in hundreds of volunteer projects from maritime science to the kinetic sculpture race. The library is beloved and although there is a staff of more than 15 people what makes the place efficient and engaging are the more than 70 volunteers. But Ms. Eisler’s personal commitment to libraries is more than her affection for the community. She believes and says “librarians live and die by First Amendment rights.”

Waiting for My Father to Pick Me Up at the Library

In the book I started to read when I came into English, a girl drank from a little bottle labeled, Dʀɪɴᴋ Mᴇ, and shrank so small, she could fit through a tiny door into a beautiful garden; but she got scared, and after a good cry, she ate a cake marked, Eᴀᴛ Mᴇ, and grew too big for the door, not that she wanted to open it anymore.

It had begun to snow. I was ten, waiting for my father to pick me up at the library. I took the book back to the desk. All done? the librarian asked. I’d just checked it out. The book was an English classic she was sure a girl like me would like. (Surely, she knew with her snowy face and magnified eyes

what a girl like me would like.) I told her I’d already read it. What I meant was I’d already come through that door and couldn’t go back. But I wasn’t about to cry and drown in a pool of tears. I wasn’t about to explain, surrounded by shelves upon shelves of books she had surely read why a girl like me was afraid of a storybook.

Soon she would see for herself when he came through the door that my father had shrunk since arriving in this country, nothing drastic at first, but something a kid used to craning her neck to glimpse his distant face, the sun blinding her eyes, would surely notice. Stepping out of that Pan Am flight, he must have sensed how

the scale was shifting, the buildings growing taller, and the little girl looking up, trying to gauge what to make of this oversized world from the look on his face seemed to be growing older as they disembarked. How could I have outgrown him, like a toy I didn’t yet have the heart to throw away?

In his Panama hat, his salmon three-piece suit, with his thick mustache, his swarthy olive skin, he looked like one of those national-costume dolls our island tías kept in a cabinet. This was the trade-off for coming to America: you became as small as the country you came from, a speck on an ocean I could blot out with my thumb.

But think of the opportunities for his children! Here, doors would open with study and application, which would’ve been closed to girls like me back home. It was why he had dropped me off at the library while he went looking for work, why I was determined to read every book on those shelves. Until looking up at those towering stacks,

I began scaling back my ambition, wanting to fit in, hoping he wouldn’t come in the door and embarrass me, a girl on the lookout at the public library, waiting to blot him out with a lifted hand he’d mistake for a wave of hello as I hurried out pretending to spare him the trouble of coming in —

or so I hope in the retrospect of memory, watching him grow ever smaller, a trickle of dust funneling down the hourglass into nothing.

It Made Me a Novelist

When I was 27, I decided I wanted to write a novel. I was in graduate school in Orange County, Calif., and had been writing short stories happily, but the idea of Page 1 out of 300 struck terror in me. I needed a way not to give up, so I decided to write five to 10 pages a day until I had a draft. This kept me moving, which I doubt I would have done otherwise. But there was another magical piece: the Newport Beach Public Library.

Each morning I packed up my laptop and some snacks and left the distraction of home (dishes, sweeping, telephone) and nested myself near the library’s big windows. I looked out at a scrubby hill full of rabbit holes behind the building (a comforting and very un-Orange County sight) and I tried to do this impossible-seeming thing, this making something out of nothing.

I remember embarking on a scene in which the parents of three children announce that they will be adopting out their daughter to her aunt and uncle. I felt so stuck. What would a character say on a night like that? And furthermore, why did I think I could write a novel ?

I looked at the hillside, at the woman in the next carrel sneak-eating Starburst. I looked at the stacks and stacks of books. Each of those thousands — millions? — of pages were made by a person who had never written that page before. Each one was a magic trick, some alchemical reaction between knowledge, belief and invention. I turned my attention from the library back to my screen and found a voice for that scene. One page and then the next.

After six weeks I had a draft. It was a mess, but it was alive. When I left my carrel that last day I gave the window a high-five. The library and I had done this together.

Climbing the Stairs

My first library began its life in 1914 with a $5,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie to a little southern Appalachian town in North Carolina, with hardly a thousand inhabitants. When I was a kid, Main Street was three blocks of stores, three churches, a narrow, magical movie theater and a little hospital housed in second-floor rooms of what had once been a hotel. No bookstore, though — the nearest was in Asheville, more than two hours away.

The most imposing buildings in town were the Baptist church, the Methodist church and the Carnegie Library. You couldn’t call the library beautiful, but it rose above Main Street handsome and tall, all planes and angles, lacking ornamentation. The library’s dominant feature was the entry — 15 steep, aspirational steps that narrowed as they climbed to a portico sheltering heavy wooden double doors. Inside, a half-dozen more steps, wooden and creaky, delivered you into one big hushed room with high windows and dark wood floors and bookshelves lining all four walls.

The children’s section began on the left, and over the years as I grew up in that town, I read my way around the shelves. Many of the books may have been there from the beginning, since World War I. As a young teenager I checked out an ancient etiquette book that included guidance on how a gentleman used a handkerchief in public. A couple of years later I read Ian Fleming and Booth Tarkington as if they were contemporaries. Somewhere along the way, I read the greatest book ever written, “Around the World on a Bicycle.” Eventually, at 16, I circled all the way back to the right side of the entry stairs where I found such treasures as “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” and “Kon-Tiki.”

But mostly I remember how that climb up the steps to the big silent room made checking out a book an act of consequence, made reading a moral choice. The structure itself expected something from you.

Regeneration and Inspiration

I have created art for over 100 books for children and adults. Yet when I moved from Boston to Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., with my family in 1970, I had illustrated just 16.

All of my projects required a great deal of research. I kept a file of pictures clipped from magazines and newspapers, but when I needed a reference for something specific, I would hop on the train to Grand Central Terminal and walk to the New York Public Library on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. It was magical to browse its vast picture collection, but I discovered that I had another great source at my fingertips.

The Croton Free Library, located in a quiet corner of town and bordering the cemetery where the playwright and writer Lorraine Hansberry is buried, was just 10 minutes from my house. Over the next 48 years, this small library would play a role in almost all of my projects, becoming one of the building blocks of my creative process. The librarians assisted in my always urgent research requests, put up with late returns, and combed the shelves for books once borrowed and now needed again with only a vague description to go on: “It was large, the cover blue or maybe green. You know, the one on African-American folklore.”

The Croton Free Library has shaped the content of my work. It is more than a research bank; it’s a muse. On days when the wheels on my creative engine refuse to turn, I’ll leave my studio and make the short drive to my library for regeneration and inspiration. And when I walk through the doors, I am always greeted with: “Hey, Jerry. What are you working on now?”

All the PLA Scholarship Winners with Mychal Threets

Working as a remote part-time graduate assistant and a public library circulation clerk makes me often feel like I’ve got my feet in two different spaces. One minute I’m helping young patrons build a foam fort in the DVD section, and the next minute I’m discussing the merits of trauma-informed librarianship with my entire library management class. It’s a weird yet fulfilling duality.

Thankfully, the Public Library Association (PLA) made it possible for me to meet many more librarians who embrace these and other roles during this year’s 2024 PLA Conference. Through their newly expanded scholarship program, the PLA awarded 151 scholarships to under-represented librarians, part-time librarians, student librarians, and rural librarians, making their attendance possible, (and mine!) I was elated when I received the email confirming my scholarship award, which prompted the realization that I would soon be meeting some of the most integral librarians within today’s public library sphere. Little did I know how significant these three days of learning would soon become to me.

The first day of the conference programming was a flurry of information, introductions, and flagrant fangirling. One of my favorite sessions that day was, Anti-Racist Reader Services: Beyond the Basics with Becky Spratford, Robin Bradford, and Yaika Sabat. If ever there was a rally cry to keep fighting the good fight for representation and well-rounded readers advisory, it was this one-hour session, with librarians sitting wall-to-wall on the carpet floor.

“Change does not happen until you are uncomfortable, if you don’t feel challenged, you need to go deeper,” said Spratford.

With a crowd filled with practice-based questions, Bradford, Sabat, and Spratford, gave us each tools, inspiration, and real-world advice on tackling difficult situations to make our libraries a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Frankly, the sense of coming home is a sentiment folks often share when they’ve found a space that makes them feel welcomed, valued, and supported. While that feeling certainly came to light when I switched my career path from marketing to public librarianship; sitting amongst these rows of librarians and community advocates, I understood that I’d finally found a group, and a profession, where I not only felt welcomed, but encouraged, supported, and celebrated. Not a single person at the conference heard me say “I work in a rural library,” and rolled their eyes, or slowed in conversation, rather, they did the opposite. With the additional context, conversations often became more engaging, with attendees offering additional resources to help me learn about practices and programs they had already implemented. It was during this conference that I got to know the heart that beats within the field of public librarianship, so naturally, I fell in love with the profession all over again.

However, the excitement didn’t stop there. During lunch on that first day, I had another core-memory come to life while meeting Molly Knox Ostertag, author, and illustrator, at the Audio Publishing Association luncheon event. For folks who have not yet read the incredible graphic novels by her, I not only highly recommend them, but insist you give them a try if you are so able! As an LGBTQIA+ creator, Knox Ostertag was one of the first authors I turned to upon moving through my own coming out journey. Her debut novel, The Girl by the Sea , is filled with intimate and complex female relationships, mixed with a supportive sapphic narrative, and imagery that will forever and always feel like a warm hug. Getting to listen to her and other authors speak at the luncheon event, meeting Knox Ostertag, getting my books signed, and then receiving custom illustrations inside the books, all made my heart do cartwheels in a way I’d forgotten was possible. All this to say, fangirling, asking for pictures, and sharing Dungeons & Dragons stories all made me feel like being a graphic novel nerd was not only a benefit to the libraries I serve, but personally fulfilling for me as well. This entire luncheon event was a much-needed reminder that serving and taking care of myself is just as important as serving and taking care of my patrons and my community.

Another personally impactful program from Wednesday’s sessions was Building a Gender-Inclusive Library: Birth Through Early Elementary with Pearl Bashakevitz and Beckett Czamecki. These two amazing librarians from the Denver Public Library helped me and other participants learn vocabulary and techniques to confront discrimination head-on while supporting gender nonconforming patrons.

One example, I appreciated was learning not to say, “Boys and girls,” when kicking off a children’s story time, but rather “Okay everyone,” or “Okay friends.” Thankfully, one brave audience member approached the microphone and shared another phrase that they used at her library.

“Hello critters and creatures!”

It made my heart sing to hear the room burst with applause and laughter, and to have our lovely presenters insist on using it themselves at their next story time.

While there are many aspects of myself that can feel undesirable when living in small-town Iowa, at the PLA conference I found a renewed sense of self, and belief in the work I’m doing. As one of my mentors often remind me, “Showing up as yourself gives others permission to do the same.”

The rest of the conference was filled with making meaningful connections, cheering on our Iowa presenter, and getting to know public library leaders from across the country. On the final day of my trip, I was sad to leave, but also immensely grateful for the countless strangers and new friends who took the time to pour into my cup over these past three days. Driving out of Columbus, I made myself promise that one day, I would be back at PLA, only then, I’d be a MLIS graduate and full-time librarian (perhaps even with a presentation of my own!) Until then, I’ll be putting my new knowledge to use and reading as many graphic novels as I can carry.

My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

What Harry Potter Series Taught Me?

Even though the books are about the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains a lot of lessons for young people to learn. Firstly, it teaches us the importance of friendship. I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

An expat’s confession: Why I miss the city by the Amur – Khabarovsk

When a resident of Moscow or St. Petersburg hears from a foreigner that they think Khabarovsk is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, there’s usually one expression that is visible on his or her face – bewilderment! Not too many people from Western and Central Russia know much about the city by the Amur River.

How does a city that is an 8-hour flight or a week’s train journey from the Russian capital hold its own with the country’s celebrated historic towns and cities? The Russian Far Eastern city of 600,000 inhabitants is just 163 years old and is much closer geographically to Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo than it is to Moscow or St. Petersburg. But, perhaps, it’s this physical distance from the European part of the country combined with a sense of a strong Russian cultural identity that actually makes Khabarovsk unique.

The Chinese border on the Bolshoi Ussuriiski Island is less than an hour’s drive away, but one would not believe it when walking around the streets of Khabarovsk. Nothing in the city even hints of its geographic Asian location. Being one of the biggest cities of the Russian Far Eastern Federal District, plenty of care has been taken to tastefully restore and maintain its pre-Russian Civil War (1917-22) architecture. Take a walk down the main thoroughfare, the Muravyev-Amurskiy street and you can’t help but marvel at the buildings that remind you of “Old Europe”.

In fact, anyone familiar with St. Petersburg would just not be able to help himself from comparing Khabarovsk’s most famous street with the northern capital’s Nevsky Prospect. They both form the traditional heart of the old cities and lead straight to the riverfront. Dare I say that the Amur riverfront is more diverse and visually appealing than the embankment close to St. Petersburg’s Hermitage? This is on account of its special topography. There is a series of hills by the Amur from where you can get some fine views of the city, its sandy beach, an expanding skyline and the undisturbed opposite bank of the river.

This city was meant to be a hub of high culture and this is clearly visible in its museums and regional music and drama theaters. While Khabarovsk celebrates its Russian heritage, there is also a great deal of pride it takes in the traditions of its indigenous peoples. Travel 75 kilometers north and you’ll not just find 14,000-year old petroglyphs , but also a settlement and museum of the Nanai people. The original inhabitants of the eastern edges of Russia are small in number, but since the fall of the Soviet Union, there has been an increased and concentrated effort to save the language and heritage of the Nanai, Evenk, Nivkh and other ethnic groups.

Heritage and cultural treasures are everywhere you go in Khabarovsk. Hop on a 1950s tram and travel from the railway station (which was rebuilt in 1935) along the boulevards and main avenues of the city, through to its southern outskirts to see different architectural styles. You’ll cross red brick buildings, some of them dating back to the early 1900s, and move on to more colourful pre-Civil War buildings, nudging newer and modern structures and rebuilt cathedrals, before heading to an area, where Stalinist three-floor homes were built for those who were “more equal than others”.

I usually hop off before the tram goes any further, since I’ve been told that the city’s ‘Pyataya Ploshadka’ neighbourhood has a notorious reputation.

Blessed weather, cursed weather!

Winter of 2019: It’s -30 degrees Celsius and I am being slapped silly on both cheeks by a bone-chilling wind and then I hear the following from a friend, born and raised in Khabarovsk: “You know, this is the mildest winter we have had in many years!” During that interesting winter of fluctuating degrees of cold, I travelled across the Tatar Strait to my old home, Sakhalin , where it was “just” 10 degrees below zero. I couldn’t help but think how stuffy it felt when I walked out of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport! I had forgotten about the extra layers of clothing I put on while leaving my apartment in Khabarovsk.

Winter of 2019

There’s a saying in Khabarovsk that the only place where people go for winter walks is from store to store. Such is the bone-chilling cold. So, that same winter, armed with a few extra layers of clothes on me, I walked around the city’s beautiful and frozen artificial pond just about every evening. The only company I had was the odd dog running around, while its impatient owner waited for the animal to “do its job” and head back home.

As cold as Khabarovsk is in the winter, it’s very sunny. Residents boast of it being the city with the third largest amount of sunlight in Russia. For a man from the tropics, where the sun is often seen as too strong and annoying, I smiled in amusement at this show of pride. But seriously, most Russian cities are beautiful in the summer and autumn when either the greenery or colourful foliage dominate the landscape, but Khabarovsk, with its lovely buildings, broad boulevards and avenues and large sodium-vapour lamps (no ugly white LEDs here yet), retains its beauty all year round, even in the winter. Of course, winter photography is a real challenge when you have to press the shutter button in such cold. Cameras and phones often freeze in that weather.

The freezing winters are great for those who like to sled, ice skate and take part in other winter sports. Even those who don’t have a great sense of physical balance on ice can take a long walk on the frozen Amur and prepare tea over an open fire on the opposite bank of the river. Others drive further out of town and over the river to try out a whole series of innovative ice sports.

The city’s Lenin Square is also a visual treat in the winters when it is home to a large number of ice sculptures.

Enjoying the outdoors

As in many other parts of the country, a Khabarovsk resident’s favourite pastime is complaining about the weather. Winters are too cold and summers are too hot! That’s right. It can be as hot and humid as Bangkok or Mumbai in Khabarovsk on a summer day, but it inevitably cools down at night when the fragrant flowers from the trees intoxicate you with an aroma that the finest perfumes of Europe can’t hold ground with.

Khabarovsk feels like a Mediterranean paradise in the summer. Locals bask in the sun and tan on the beach by the Amur. That is, those who have not made a beeline for the sea beaches of Primorye to the south. On the outskirts of the city, there is a series of peaceful lakes, some of those home to large lotuses.

The monsoons manage to find their way up north through East Asia to Khabarovsk, so you can find yourself enjoying a sunbath by a tranquil lake one minute and getting terrorized by the most potent and aggressive mosquitoes on earth the next if the heavens open up!

The fall is beautiful and colourful and the hills by the Amur turn yellow with a touch of red, orange and green. This is a great time to go hiking on Mount Khekhsir, which offers the best views of the spot where the Amur and Ussuri rivers split and Russia gives way to China. Keep in mind though that this is the habitat of the world’s largest tigers and these wild cats usually leave humans alone, but if they have a change of heart or a real appetite, they could use the fall camouflage to have you as a nice lunch, so be careful when you venture out!

Summer of 2017

Also, keep in mind that these are some of the wildest forests in the country and more importantly, considered to be of highly strategic importance. Don’t be like an Indian man who got lost in these forests in the autumn of 2007 and only managed to get out the next day and back to civilization. He escaped the attention of tigers, leopards and bears by sheer luck, and took punishment from the security services and police with a smile. But not everyone may be so lucky.

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.

Khabarovsk , the administrative center of Khabarovsk Krai, is one of the largest industrial, transport, cultural, educational, and scientific centers of the Far East of Russia. This city is located at the intersection of international railway and air transport routes on the right bank of the Amur River, near the border with China.

History of Khabarovsk

Foundation of khabarovsk.

Until the mid-19th century, the territory of present-day Khabarovsk, in accordance with the Nerchinsk Treaty, was located on a neutral territory, not delimited between the Qing Empire (China) and the Russian Empire. In 1858, the Aigun Treaty was signed, according to which the entire left bank of the Amur River passed into the possession of the Russian Empire, the right bank of the Amur to the Ussuri River became part of China.

After signing the treaty, the 13th Siberian Line Battalion was sent to establish settlements along the Amur. One of the new settlements was named Khabarovka - in honor of Yerofey Khabarov, a 17th-century Russian explorer known for his attempts to colonize this region for Russia. In 1864, the first plan for the development of the future town was made. By 1865, there were 1,294 residents in Khabarovka - mostly soldiers and officers.

Initially, only military buildings were constructed in Khabarovka. Five years after the foundation, there were already 167 buildings in the settlement including the house of the commander, barracks, warehouses, residential buildings, and trading shops. Due to its very convenient location at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovka began to develop very quickly.

Following the military settlers, civilians began to arrive from all parts of the Russian Empire including Moscow and St. Petersburg. At that time, their main occupations were hunting, fur trade, and fishing. The settlers were provided with free fertile land, which also contributed to the influx of new residents to Khabarovka.

Khabarovsk - a regional center of the Russian Far East

In 1873, the first elementary school was opened in Khabarovka. The Russo-Chinese treaty of 1881 allowed duty-free trade in the 50-kilometer land border zone and the goods of Chinese and English manufacturers could be bought half cheaper here.

By 1880, Khabarovka was already a rather large settlement of Primorsky Oblast with a population of 2,036 people (47.3% - military, 23% - bourgeois, 21.3% - foreigners (mainly Chinese workers), 1.4% - representatives of the indigenous population, and 7% - officers, clergy, merchants, industrialists).

At that time, the capital of Primorsky Oblast was Nikolayevsk (today’s Nikolayevsk-on-Amur), but Khabarovka had a more advantageous geographical position, as it was located at the crossroads of all communication lines from Vladivostok and the coast. In 1880, Khabarovka became the center of Primorsky Oblast and transformed into a town. In 1893, the town was renamed Khabarovsk.

In 1894, the Amur (Khabarovsk) department of the Russian Geographical Society was created with a museum (the Khabarovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore) and a library. In 1895, the first vocational technical school was opened - the railway school of the Ministry of Railways. During these years, a lot of stone houses were built in Khabarovsk. Most of them are preserved in the city to this day.

In 1897, the first train departed from the Khabarovsk railway station. The Ussuri Railway connected Khabarovsk with Vladivostok. The population of the town was about 14,900 people.

Khabarovsk in the 20th century and beyond

In 1916, the construction of a railway bridge over the Amur was completed and Khabarovsk was connected by the Amur Railway with Eastern Siberia.

November 14, 1922, after the liquidation of the Far Eastern Republic, Khabarovsk became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On December 6, 1923, the administrative center of the Russian Far East was transferred to Khabarovsk from Chita. In 1925, the railway bridge over the Amur was restored.

On January 4, 1926, Far Eastern Krai was formed with its center in Khabarovsk. The population of the city was about 52 thousand people. On October 23, 1934, the Far Eastern Agricultural Research Institute was established in Khabarovsk. In 1936, Khabarovsk was connected by rail with Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

By 1939, the population of Khabarovsk increased to 200 thousand people. From June 1940, the command of the Far Eastern Front was deployed in Khabarovsk. From August 1945, the headquarters of the High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East and the command of the 1st Far Eastern Front were stationed in the city.

On March 16, 1946, the Khabarovsk Drama Theater was created. In 1949, a trial was held in Khabarovsk in the case of former members of the Japanese Kwantung Army. The most significant changes in the city occurred in the post-war decades.

In 1960, the Khabarovsk television studio began broadcasting. On October 24, 1964, the Khabarovsk Shipyard produced the first “Rocket”, a famous Soviet hydrofoil ship. On September 1, 1967, the Khabarovsk Institute of Physical Education (the Far Eastern State Academy of Physical Culture) was opened. On September 1, 1968, the Khabarovsk State Institute of Arts and Culture was opened.

In 1975, the population of Khabarovsk was about 502,000 people. By 1990, Khabarovsk was formed as a multifunctional economic center of national importance. The population reached its maximum of 616 thousand people.

In May 2000, federal districts were formed in the Russian Federation. Khabarovsk became the center of the Far Eastern Federal District. In 2008, the railway station was completely renovated. In 2009, the reconstruction of the bridge across the Amur was finished. In late summer - early fall of 2013, Khabarovsk was affected by flooding, which became the strongest over the entire observation period since 1897.

On December 13, 2018, the center of the Far Eastern Federal District was moved from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok.

Khabarovsk - Features

Khabarovsk is often considered the capital of the Russian Far East. The city is located in Asia, in the southern part of the Central Amur Lowland, near the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, about 17 km from the border with China. The city stands on the elevated right bank of the Amur River, the relief of which is diverse and complex.

The distance from Moscow to Khabarovsk by roads is about 8,250 km, to Vladivostok - 750 km. About half of the population of Khabarovsk Krai lives in this city. Khabarovsk is a bit similar to the large cities of the Volga region. Here you can see similar new buildings wedging chaotically into the cityscape and an abundance of pre-revolutionary architecture.

Although Khabarovsk can’t boast of Vladivostok’s seaside flavor or all-Russian sights, it’s still worth coming here, and to some extent this is inevitable: all routes of the Khabarovsk region converge here.

The climate in Khabarovsk is temperate monsoon, with snowy cold winters and hot humid summers. The average temperature in January is minus 20.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 21.8 degrees Celsius. The number of sunny days per year is significantly higher than in a number of large cities of Russia (up to 300 days a year; in Moscow and St. Petersburg - about 100).

From November to March, very dry and frosty continental air with clear and sunny weather is established over the city. The best time to visit Khabarovsk is June and September when the weather is not too hot.

Khabarovsk is a major hub at the junction of water, air, rail, and road communications from the north and west of the country, Primorye, Sakhalin, and the ports of Khabarovsk Krai. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, as well as the railway line to Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This city is the connecting point of the federal highways “Amur” (Chita - Khabarovsk), “Ussuri” (Khabarovsk - Vladivostok), and Khabarovsk - Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Urban transport includes trams, trolleybuses, buses, minibuses, and taxis.

The international airport “Novy” offers regular flights to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan).

The design of the Russian 5,000 rubles banknote features Khabarovsk. On its front side you can see the monument to Muravyov-Amursky (the founder of Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) on the background of the embankment of the Amur River. The Khabarovsk bridge over the Amur is depicted on the back of the banknote. At the time of construction, in 1916, it was one of the longest bridges in the world and was called “The Amur Miracle”.

The fork-shaped cross depicted on the coat of arms of Khabarovsk symbolizes the location of the city at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers. Fish reminds of the main occupation of the first residents - fishing. The white-breasted bear and the Amur tiger are endemic to the Amur land.

Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after Nikolai Grodekov . The expositions of this museum feature exhibits on the paleontology and geology of the Amur Region, the flora and fauna of the Far East, the fish of the Amur basin, the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Amur region and Russian settlers, the history of the development of the Russian Far East, the events of the Civil War in the Far East (1917-1922). Amur (Khabarovsk) Cliff - the most beautiful place in the city located in the center of Admiral Gennady Nevelsky Embankment running along the Amur River bank, near the Khabarovsk Regional Museum. In 1858, a military detachment led by commander Yakov Dyachenko landed here. He decided to set up his camp here, which later became a military settlement, and even later - the village of Khabarovka.

Here you can find a good observation deck with beautiful views of the Amur River and the city. Nearby, there is a park with the famous monument to the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Muravyov-Amursky. This monument is depicted on the Russian banknote of 5,000 rubles. Shevchenko Street, 15.

The Far Eastern Art Museum - the largest museum of fine art in the Russian Far East. The collection of this museum has about 16 thousand works of art of the Old Russian, Russian pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern periods. Khabarovsk Assumption Cathedral - the first stone building and one of the largest churches in Khabarovsk. The original building was demolished in 1930. In 2002, the cathedral was restored according to a new architectural project in the Russian style with some eclectic features. The new cathedral as a whole differs from the original building, but has some of its elements. In particular, the shapes of the arches and domes of the new cathedral were taken from the old version. I lived in Khabarovsk for many years. I was an American working there. I spoke fluent Russian and pretty much blended right in. No one guessed I was a foreigner. I made lots of truly wonderful friends some of whom became like family.

I walked about any time I felt like it and never had any sort of problems. I lived in several other cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg and Khabarovsk is my favorite. If I could figure out a way to live there permanently, I would with pleasure.

I had the pleasure of flying a number of flights to Khabarovsk in the early 1990's. I met some wonderful people, one very special person. While the city was in a semi state of disrepair, it still held the historic beauty of its earlier years.

It has been over 20 years since my visit and I would very much like to return. Perhaps not in this life time but the memories live on.
