Cover letters

A good cover letter can help to “sell” your manuscript to the journal editor. As well as introducing your work to the editor you can also take this opportunity to explain why the manuscript will be of interest to a journal's readers, something which is always as the forefront editors’ mind. As such it is worth spending time writing a coherent and persuasive cover letter.

The following is an example of a poor cover letter:

Dear Editor-in-Chief, I am sending you our manuscript entitled “Large Scale Analysis of Cell Cycle Regulators in bladder cancer” by Researcher et al. We would like to have the manuscript considered for publication in Pathobiology. Please let me know of your decision at your earliest convenience. With my best regards, Sincerely yours, A Researcher, PhD

Instead, check to see whether the journal’s Instructions for Authors have any cover letter requirements (e.g. disclosures, statements, potential reviewers). Then, write a letter that explains why the editor would want to publish your manuscript. The following structure covers all the necessary points that need to be included.

  • If known, address the editor who will be assessing your manuscript by their name. Include the date of submission and the journal you are submitting to.
  • First paragraph: include the title of your manuscript and the type of manuscript it is (e.g. review, research, case study). Then briefly explain the background to your study, the question you sought out to answer and why.
  • Second paragraph: you should concisely explain what was done, the main findings and why they are significant.
  • Third paragraph: here you should indicate why the readers of the journal would be interested in the work. Take your cues from the journal’s aims and scope. For example if the journal requires that all work published has broad implications explain how your study fulfils this. It is also a good idea to include a sentence on the importance of the results to the field.
  • To conclude state the corresponding author and any journal specific requirements that need to be complied with (e.g. ethical standards).

TIP: All cover letters should contain these sentences:

  • We confirm that this manuscript has not been published elsewhere and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • All authors have approved the manuscript and agree with its submission to [insert the name of the target journal].

Submission checklist

Before submitting your manuscript, thoroughly check its quality one more time. Evaluate it critically—could anything be done better?

Be sure that:

  • The manuscript follows the Instructions for Authors
  • All files are in the correct file format and of the appropriate resolution or size
  • The spelling and grammar are correct
  • You have contact information for all authors
  • You have written a persuasive cover letter

Instructions for online submission of manuscripts

New for 2012 - the resubmission time has been reduced from 6 to 3 months. authors, please be aware of this change when submitting your revised papers., preparing your manuscript -- please ensure that the required formats for text and figure submission are followed strictly.

  • Follow the instructions to authors regarding the format of your manuscript and references.
  • Prepare your manuscript, including tables, using a word processing program and save it as a .doc or .rtf file. All files in these formats will be converted to .pdf format upon submission. Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
  • Prepare your figures at publication quality resolution, using applications capable of generating high-resolution .tif files (1200 d.p.i. for line drawings and 300 d.p.i. for colour and half-tone artwork). The printing process requires your figures to be in this format if your paper is accepted and printed. For useful information on preparing your figures for publication, go to the Digital Art Support page. For online submission, please also prepare a second version of your figures at low-resolution (72 d.p.i.) for use in the review process; these versions of the figures can be saved in .jpg, .gif, .tif or .eps format.
  • For online submission, please upload the low-resolution versions of the figures as separate files ( do not incorporate them into the main body of your text ).
  • When preparing figures, please make sure that any characters or numbers included in the figures are large enough to read on-screen.
  • Prepare any other files that are to be submitted for review, including any supplementary material. The permitted formats for these files are the same as for manuscripts and figures. Other file types, such as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations may be uploaded and will be converted to .pdf format.
  • When naming your files, please use simple filenames and avoid special characters and spaces. If you are a Macintosh user, you must also type the three-letter extension at the end of the file name you choose (e.g. .doc, .rtf, .jpg, .gif, .tif, .ppt, .xls, .pdf, .eps, .mov).

Submitting Your Manuscript

Now that your files are ready, visit the online submission web site.

  • First, you will need to log into this  online submission site for NDT and this online submission site for CKJ
  • If you know your login details (i.e., you have submitted or reviewed a manuscript in this journal before), use your User ID and Password to log on. (Your user ID will usually be your email address.)
  • If you do not know your login details, check to see if you are already registered by clicking on the 'Forgot your password' button and following the on-screen instructions. If you are not already registered, you can register by clicking on the 'Create account' button on the login screen and following the on-screen instructions.
  • If you have trouble finding your manuscripts or have other problems with your account, do not create another account. Instead, please contact the journal's editorial office.
  • To submit a new manuscript, go to the 'Author Centre', and click on “Click here to submit a new manuscript', and then follow the on-screen instructions. There are up to 7 steps for you to follow to submit your manuscript. You move from one step to the next by clicking on the 'Next' button on each screen or back to the previous screen by clicking on the 'Previous' button. Please note that if you click on the 'Back' or 'Forward' buttons on your browser, the information you have entered will not be saved. At any stage you can stop the submission process by clicking on the 'Main Menu' button. Everything you have typed into the system will be saved, and the partially completed submission will appear under 'unsubmitted manuscripts' in your 'Author Centre'. To return to the submission process you will need to click on the button 'Continue Submission' against the relevant manuscript title.
  • When you come to upload your manuscript files via the 'File Upload' screen:
  • Enter individual files using the 'Browse' buttons and select the appropriate 'File type’ from the pull-down menu. The choices may vary from journal to journal but will always include a 'Main Document' (your manuscript text).
  • Upload your files by clicking on the 'Upload files' button. This may take several minutes. Click on the SAVE button to confirm the upload. Repeat these steps until you have uploaded all your files.
  • If you have uploaded any figures or tables you will be prompted to provide figure/table captions and 'file tags' that will link figures to text in the HTML proof of your main document.
  • Once you have uploaded all your files, indicate the order in which they should appear in your paper. This will determine the order in which they appear in the consolidated PDF used for peer review.
  • After the successful upload of your text and images, you will need to view and proofread your manuscript. Please do this by clicking on the blue HTML button or a PDF button.
  • If the files have not been uploaded to your satisfaction, go back to the file upload screen where you can remove the files you do not want and repeat the process.
  • When you are satisfied with the uploaded manuscript proof click on 'Next' which will take you to the 'Review & Submit' screen. The system will check that you have completed all the mandatory fields and that you have viewed your manuscript proof. It will also present you with a summary of all the information you have provided and give you a final chance to edit it. If there is a red cross next to any section this will indicate that not all the fields have been filled in correctly. You may either go back to the relevant page or click the nearest ‘edit’ button.
  • When you have finished reviewing this information press 'Submit'.
  • After the manuscript has been submitted you will see a confirmation screen and receive an email confirmation stating that your manuscript has been successfully submitted. This will also give the assigned manuscript number, which is used in all correspondence during peer review. If you do not receive this, your manuscript will not have been successfully submitted to the journal and the paper cannot progress to peer review. If this is the case your manuscript will still be sitting in the 'Unsubmitted Manuscripts' section of your 'Author Centre' awaiting your attention.
  • If you return to your 'Author Centre' you will notice that your newly submitted manuscript can be found in the 'Submitted Manuscripts' area. The ‘Status' section provides information on the status of your manuscript as it moves through the review process.

Submitting A Revised Manuscript

  • Logon to the online submission web site as before and, in the 'Author Centre', click on 'Manuscripts to be Revised'. You will then see the title of any manuscripts you submitted that are under revision.
  • If you click on 'View comments/respond' you will see the editor's letter to you together with the referees' comments. You may cut and paste your responses into the text areas at the bottom of the screen.
  • If you click on the manuscript title you will reach the 'File Manager' screen. Here you can upload the files that constitute your revised manuscript. To facilitate the production process, it is essential that you upload your revised manuscript as a .doc or .rtf file, and not in .pdf format.

Important. Your images are required as high-resolution .tif files (1200 d.p.i. for line drawings and 300 d.p.i. for colour and half-tone artwork). For useful information on preparing your figures for publication, go to the Digital Art Support website. Learn to present a PDF in full-screen mode like you would a PPT file or convert it to PPT for easy presenting.

You can present a PDF as if it were a PowerPoint presentation in two ways. You can either open a PDF and view the content in full screen or save the file as a PowerPoint. If you choose the latter, you can then open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint and present it as you usually would. Check out the full instructions for both methods below.

Save PowerPoint presentations as PDF files

When you save presentation as a PDF file it freezes the formatting and layout. People can view the slides even if they don’t have PowerPoint, but they can’t make changes to it.

Select File > Export .

Save a presentation as PDF

Click Create PDF/XPS Document , then click Create PDF/XPS .

In the Publish as PDF or XPS dialog box, choose a location to save the file to. If you want it to have a different name, enter it in the File name box.

Optionally, if you want to change what the final PDF file is like, do any of the following:

At Optimize for , select Standard for higher quality (for example, if you want to print it). Select Minimum size to make the file smaller (for example, if you want to send it as an e-mail attachment).

Click Options to set how the presentation will appear as a PDF. Here are some of the available options:

To save the current slide only as a PDF, under Range , select Current slide .

To save specific slides as PDF, in Slides(s) , enter the slide number range in From and To boxes.

If you don't want to save slides, but instead only save comments, handouts, or Outline view, under Publish what , select an appropriate option. You can also specify the number of slides to appear in Slides per page dropdown box, and modify the order ( Horizontal or Vertical ).

You can choose to include frame slides, hidden slides, comments, ink, non-printing information such as Document properties or Document structure tags, in your PDF by selecting the appropriate options.

Click Publish .

There are two ways to make your PowerPoint for macOS presentation a PDF.

You can save your presentation as a PDF in File > Save As .

You can export your presentation as a PDF file by going to File > Export .

Both methods do the same thing, so you can choose whichever you're more familiar with when you want to create a PDF version of your presentation.

Method 1: Save your presentation as a PDF

Choose the location where you'd like to save your PDF, and then in the File Format menu, choose PDF.

Set the print quality of the PDF

Features such as saving notes, saving slides as handouts, including hidden slides in the PDF, or setting the PDF to a smaller file size aren't available. However, you can set the print quality of a PDF to a higher or lower standard.

Tip:  PowerPoint for macOS doesn't preserve hyperlinks in PDFs but if you save your presentation to OneDrive you can open it in PowerPoint for the web and download as PDF from there. PDF files generated from PowerPoint for the web preserve hyperlinks, are accessible, and also tend to have a smaller file size.

You can set the print quality of the PDF to High , Medium , or Low —depending on your need. By default, the print quality is set to High—which is the optimal choice for printing a PDF. Follow these instructions to set the print quality of the PDF:

Click the PowerPoint menu > Preferences .

In the PowerPoint Preferences dialog box, click General .

Under Print Quality (Paper/PDF) , set the Desired Quality to an option of your choice.

Set the print quality of the PDF to High, Medium or Low

Click the File tab, click Download As , and then click Download as PDF . (The file is converted to PDF, and then a dialog box tells you that it is ready to download.

Click Download . A message bar appears to show you that the downloaded PDF file is ready to save to your computer. (The exact message varies depending on the web browser you're using.)

Defining initial view as Full Screen mode

Full Screen mode is a property that you can set for PDFs used for presentations. In Full Screen mode, PDF pages fill the entire screen, and the Acrobat menu bar, toolbar, and window controls are hidden. You can also set other opening views, so that your documents or collections of documents open to a consistent view. In either case, you can add page transitions to enhance the visual effect as the viewer pages through the document.

To control how you navigate a PDF (for example, advancing pages automatically), use the options in the Full Screen panel of the Preferences dialog box. These preferences are specific to a system—not a PDF document—and affect all PDFs that you open on that system. Therefore, if you set up your presentation on a system you control, you can control these preferences.

Define an initial view

When a user opens your PDF document or PDF Portfolio , they see the initial view of the PDF. You can set the initial view to the magnification level, page, and page layout that you want. If your PDF is a presentation, you can set the initial view to Full Screen mode. In Acrobat Pro you can create Action Wizards to change default settings for multiple documents.

After you define the initial view of the PDF, you can add page transitions to selected pages or the entire document.

Acrobat supports page transitions and bullet fly-ins from PowerPoint.

Define the initial view

  • Choose File > Properties.
  • In the Document Properties dialog box, click Initial View.

Select the options that you want, and then select OK. Save and reopen the file to see the effects.

Define the initial view as Full Screen mode

When setting the initial view of a PDF to Full Screen mode, you must define how the document opens.

  • Choose File > Properties.
  • In the Document Properties dialog box, select Initial View.

Choose Page Only from the Navigation Tab menu.

Choose Single Page from the Page Layout menu.

Set Open To Page to the page on which you want to start the presentation.

Users can exit Full Screen mode by pressing Esc if their preferences are set this way. However, in Full Screen mode, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions in the document to provide this functionality.

Initial View options for document properties

The Initial View options in the Document Properties are organized into three areas: Layout And Magnification , Window Options, and User Interface Options .

Layout And Magnification

Determines the appearance of the document.

Two conditions can affect page layout and magnification. 1) Someone has already set an individual PDF to a different initial view in File > Properties. 2) You have the option Restore Last View Settings When Reopening Documents selected in Edit > Preferences > Document category.

Navigation Tab

Determines which panels are displayed in the navigation pane.

Page Layout

Determines how document pages are arranged.

Magnification

Sets the zoom level for the document after it's opened. Default uses the magnification set by the user.

Open To Page

Specifies the page that appears when the document opens.

Setting Default for the Magnification and Page Layout options uses the individual users’ settings in the Page Display preferences.

Window Options

Determine how the window adjusts in the screen area when a user opens the document. These options apply to the document window itself in relationship to the screen area of the user’s monitor.

Resize Window To Initial Page

Adjusts the document window to fit snugly around the opening page, according to the options that you selected under Document Options.

Center Window On Screen

Positions the window in the center of the screen area.

Open In Full Screen Mode

Maximizes the document window and displays the document without the menu bar, toolbar, or window controls.

Show File Name

Shows the filename in the title bar of the window.

Show Document Title

Shows the document title in the title bar of the window. The document title is obtained from the Description panel of the Document Properties dialog box.

User Interface Options

Determine which parts of the interface—the menu bar, the toolbars, and the window controls—are hidden.

 If you hide the menu bar and toolbars, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions that temporarily hide interface controls while the page is in view. (See Add actions with page thumbnails .)

Add page transitions

You can create an interesting effect that occurs each time a page advances by using page transitions.

You can also set page transitions for a group of documents using the Actions wizard in Acrobat Pro .

Choose Tools > Organize Pages > More > Page Transitions.

In the Set Transitions dialog, choose a transition effect from the Transition menu. These transition effects are the same as effects set in the Full Screen preferences.

  • Choose the direction in which the transition effect occurs. Available options depend on the transition.
  • Choose the speed of the transition effect.
  • Select Auto Flip, and enter the number of seconds between automatic page turning. If you do not select this option, the user turns pages using keyboard commands or the mouse.

Select the Page Range that you want to apply transitions to.

If users select Ignore All Transitions in the Full Screen preferences, they do not see the page transitions.

If you want to share your presentation with someone that doesn’t have Microsoft PowerPoint, you can save and share the file as a PDF. You can also adjust the way the slides appear on the PDF. Here's how.

When you save a PowerPoint presentation as a PDF file, the layout, format, fonts, and images of the presentation will remain the same. This lets users without access to PowerPoint view the presentation (though they are unable to edit it).

First, open the PowerPoint presentation to be saved as a PDF. Select the “File” tab and then click the “Export” option in the left-hand pane.

You’ll then be at the “Create PDF/XPS Document” tab. Here, select “Create PDF/XPS.”

Window’s File Explorer will appear. Select the location in which you would like to save your new file. You can see that the “Save as type” is now PDF. You can also rename the file as you like.

You may also notice the “Optimize for” options at the bottom-right of the window:

  • Standard: This is a high-quality version of the document, ideal for when you only plan to publish it online or print it out.
  • Minimum Size: This is a lower-quality version of the document. It’s also suitable for publishing online, but ideal for when you need to send the document as an email attachment, as it reduces the size of the file .

You can also set specific options to adjust how the file appears. To do this, click the “Options” button underneath.

The “Options” window will appear, and you have several options to choose from. Here’s a brief overview of what’s available:

  • Range: Export all slides, the current slide, or a selection of slides from your presentation.
  • Publish Options: You can choose to export only comments, handouts, or outline view here by selecting the “Publish What” option. You’re also able to dictate how many slides appear on each page, flip the slides horizontally or vertically, or give the slides a frame.
  • Include Non-printing Information: Include document properties or structure tags.
  • PDF Options: Make the document PDF/_A compliant.

Once you’ve adjusted the options, click “OK.”

Finally, back at Windows File Explorer, click “Publish.”

Your PDF is now ready to share.

How to save a PowerPoint presentation as a PDF.

PowerPoint offers two different ways to save your presentation as a PDF , even including your notes. You can do this using the Save As option or the File Export option. To save your presentation as a PDF using the Save As option, follow these steps:

  • Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
  • Click Save As under the File menu.
  • Find and click PDF under the file type dropdown menu.
  • To make sure your notes are visible in the final PDF, select More Options underneath the file type dropdown menu.
  • Click the Options button.
  • Select “Notes pages” under the “Publish what” dropdown menu. This will show your notes and slides on the final PDF.
  • Adjust any other desired settings, including checking the box next to “Include comments” if there are comments you want to include in your file.
  • Click Save.

To save your PowerPoint presentation as a PDF using the File Export option, use these steps:

  • Click Export under the File menu.
  • Click Create Adobe PDF, or click Create PDF/XPS Document if Adobe Acrobat is not yet installed.
  • Click Options.
  • If using Acrobat, check the box next to Convert Speaker Notes. Then click OK.
  • If using the built-in PDF converter, select “Notes pages” from the “Publish what” dropdown menu.
  • Click OK, then click Publish.

How to print PowerPoint as a PDF with notes.

Before printing your PowerPoint as a PDF, you have to save it as one. The first way to save your PowerPoint as a PDF with notes is to use the right save options. Once you’re ready to export your presentation, follow these steps:

  • Click File on the top toolbar, then Print.
  • Choose Show Details.
  • Under the Layout dropdown menu, click Notes.
  • Select Save as PDF from the PDF dropdown menu.

This will “print” your PowerPoint as a PDF with all your notes included. You should be able to view and share your presentation and read all your notes without worrying about formatting issues.   • Select Print from the File menu.

  • In Settings, select Notes Pages from the first dropdown menu under Slides. This will display one slide and its accompanying notes on each printed page.

Over the last two decades, Apple has become one of the most valuable public companies in the world. Today, its net income exceeds the individual gross domestic product of more than 100 countries. That is in large part due to the success of the iPhone, Apple’s signature smartphone product. But as our complaint alleges, Apple has maintained monopoly power in the smartphone market, not simply by staying ahead of the competition on the merits, but by violating federal antitrust law. Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies break the law. We allege that Apple has employed a strategy that relies on exclusionary, anticompetitive conduct that hurts both consumers and developers. For consumers, that has meant fewer choices, higher prices and fees, lower quality smartphones, apps and accessories, and less innovation from Apple and its competitors. For developers, that has meant being forced to play by rules that insulate Apple from competition. And as outlined in our complaint, we allege that Apple has consolidated its monopoly power, not by making its own products better, but by making other products worse.

The federal government’s aggressive crackdown on Big Tech expanded on Thursday to include an antitrust lawsuit by the Justice Department against Apple, one of the world’s best-known and most valuable companies.

The department joined 16 states and the District of Columbia to file a significant challenge to the reach and influence of Apple, arguing in an 88-page lawsuit that the company had violated antitrust laws with practices that were intended to keep customers reliant on their iPhones and less likely to switch to a competing device. The tech giant prevented other companies from offering applications that compete with Apple products like its digital wallet, which could diminish the value of the iPhone, and hurts consumers and smaller companies that compete with it, the government said.

The Justice Department’s lawsuit is seeking to put an end to those practices. The government even has the right to ask for a breakup of the Silicon Valley icon.

Read the Lawsuit Against Apple

The antitrust suit is the federal government’s most significant challenge to the reach and influence of the company.

The lawsuit caps years of regulatory scrutiny of Apple’s wildly popular suite of devices and services, which have fueled its growth into a nearly $2.75 trillion public company that was for years the most valuable on the planet. It takes direct aim at the iPhone, Apple’s most popular device and most powerful business, and attacks the way the company has turned the billions of smartphones it has sold since 2007 into the centerpiece of its empire.

By tightly controlling the user experience on iPhones and other devices, Apple has created what critics call an uneven playing field, where it grants its own products and services access to core features that it denies rivals. Over the years, it has limited finance companies’ access to the phone’s payment chip and Bluetooth trackers from tapping into its location-service feature. It’s also easier for users to connect Apple products, like smartwatches and laptops, to the iPhone than to those made by other manufacturers.

“Each step in Apple’s course of conduct built and reinforced the moat around its smartphone monopoly,” the government said in the lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. It added that the company’s practices resulted in “higher prices and less innovation.”

Apple says these practices make its iPhones more secure than other smartphones. But app developers and rival device makers say Apple uses its power to crush competition.

“This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets,” an Apple spokeswoman said. “If successful, it would hinder our ability to create the kind of technology people expect from Apple — where hardware, software, and services intersect. It would also set a dangerous precedent, empowering government to take a heavy hand in designing people’s technology.”

Apple is the latest company the federal government has tried to rein in under a wave of antitrust pressure in recent years from both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, to which the Biden administration has appointed heads sharply focused on changing the laws to fit the modern era. Google, Meta and Amazon are all facing similar suits, and companies from Kroger to JetBlue Airways have faced greater scrutiny of potential acquisitions and expansion.

The lawsuit asks the court to stop Apple from engaging in current practices, including blocking cloud-streaming apps, undermining messaging across smartphone operating systems and preventing the creation of digital wallet alternatives.

The Justice Department has the right under the law to ask for structural changes to Apple’s business — including a breakup, said an agency official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The official declined to identify what additional action the agency could request in this case but any demands would be tied to how a court rules on the question of whether — and how — Apple broke the law.

It’s unclear what implications the suit — which is likely to drag out years before any type of resolution — would have for consumers. Apple plans to file a motion to dismiss the case in the next 60 days. In its filing, the company plans to emphasize that competition laws permit it to adopt policies or designs that its competitors oppose, particularly when those designs would make using an iPhone a better experience.

Apple has effectively fought off other antitrust challenges. In a lawsuit over its App Store policies that Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, brought in 2020, Apple persuaded the judge that customers could easily switch between its iPhone operating system and Google’s Android system. It has presented data showing that the reason few customers change phones is their loyalty to the iPhone.

It also has defended its business practices in the past by highlighting how the App Store, which it opened in 2008, created millions of new businesses. Over the past decade, the number of paid app makers has increased by 374 percent to 5.2 million, which Apple has said is a testament to a flourishing marketplace.

Every modern-day tech giant has faced a major federal antitrust challenge. The Justice Department is also pursuing a case against Google’s search business and another focused on Google’s hold over advertising technology. The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit accusing Meta, which owns Facebook, of thwarting competition when it bought Instagram and WhatsApp and another accusing Amazon of abusing its power over online retail. The F.T.C. also tried unsuccessfully to block Microsoft from acquiring Activision Blizzard, the video game publisher.

The lawsuits reflect a push by the regulators to apply greater scrutiny to the companies’ roles as gatekeepers to commerce and communications. In 2019, under President Donald J. Trump, the agencies opened antitrust inquiries into Google, Meta, Amazon and Apple. The Biden administration has put even more energy behind the effort, appointing critics of the tech giants to lead both the F.T.C. and the antitrust division of the Department of Justice.

In Europe, regulators recently punished Apple for preventing music streaming competitors from communicating with users about promotions and options to upgrade their subscriptions, levying a 1.8 billion-euro fine. App makers have also appealed to the European Commission , the European Union’s executive arm, to investigate claims that Apple is violating a new law requiring it to open iPhones to third-party app stores.

In South Korea and the Netherlands , the company is facing potential fines over the fees it charges app developers to use alternative payment processors. Other countries, including Britain, Australia and Japan, are considering rules that would undercut Apple’s grip on the app economy.

The Justice Department, which began its investigation into Apple in 2019, chose to build a broader and more ambitious case than any other regulator has brought against the company. Rather than narrowly focus on the App Store, as European regulators have, it focused on Apple’s entire ecosystem of products and services.

The lawsuit filed Thursday focuses on a group of practices that the government said Apple had used to shore up its dominance.

The company “undermines” the ability of iPhone users to message with owners of other types of smartphones, like those running the Android operating system, the government said. That divide — epitomized by the green bubbles that show an Android owner’s messages — sent a signal that other smartphones were lower quality than the iPhone, according to the lawsuit.

Apple has similarly made it difficult for the iPhone to work with smartwatches other than its own Apple Watch, the government argued. Once an iPhone user owns an Apple Watch, it becomes far more costly for them to ditch the phone.

The government also said Apple had tried to maintain its monopoly by not allowing other companies to build their own digital wallets. Apple Wallet is the only app on the iPhone that can use the chip, known as the NFC, that allows a phone to tap-to-pay at checkout. Though Apple encourages banks and credit card companies to allow their products to work inside Apple Wallet, it blocks them from getting access to the chip and creating their own wallets as alternatives for customers.

The government said that Apple refuses to allow game streaming apps that could make the iPhone a less valuable piece of hardware or offer “super apps” that let users perform a variety of activities from one application.

The government’s complaint uses similar arguments to the claims it made against Microsoft decades ago, in a seminal lawsuit that argued the company was tying its web browser to the Windows operating system, said Colin Kass, an antitrust lawyer at Proskauer Rose. He added that the most compelling allegation — and the one that brings it closest to the Microsoft case — is that Apple could be contractually preventing rivals from developing apps that work with other app providers, as “super apps” could.

Other legal experts noted that companies are legally allowed to favor their own products and services, so the government will have to explain why that is a problem with Apple.

“This case is about technology,” Mr. Kass said. “Can the antitrust laws force a company to redesign its product to make it more compatible with competitors’ products?”

Apple has defended itself against other antitrust challenges by arguing that its policies are critical to make its devices private and secure. In its defense against Epic Games, it argued that restraining the distribution of apps allowed it to protect the iPhone from malware and fraud. The practice benefited customers and made the iPhone more attractive than competing devices with Android’s operating system.

The government will try to show that the effect of Apple’s policies was to hurt consumers, not help them.

“Competition makes devices more private and more secure,” said Jonathan Kanter, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s antitrust division. “In many instances, Apple’s conduct has made its ecosystem less private and less secure.”

Donald Trump is now in the business of selling Bibles, according to an announcement made Tuesday.

Trump announced the partnership with country music singer Lee Greenwood, best known for his song "God Bless the USA". The pair is selling a custom version of the Bible for $59.99, called the " God Bless the USA Bible," which was previously announced in 2021 by Greenwood but then fell to the wayside after hitting snafus with publishing.

"All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many. It's my favorite book," Trump said in a video posted on social media "It's a lot of peoples' favorite book."

Melvin Lee Greenwood is an American  country music  singer-songwriter. He has released more than 20 major-label albums but is best known for his 1984 patriotic song "God Bless the USA."

Greenwood identifies as a conservative Republican and Christian and his song has often been used at Republican political rallies and conventions. It has been used in the campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and more recently, Donald Trump.

President Bush nominated Greenwood to serve on the National Council of Arts, which he did from 2008 to 2022. In 2018, Greenwood was awarded the MMP Music Award and was inducted into the MMP Hall of Fame by Commander Joseph W. Clark.

'God Bless the USA Bible' controversies, response

Constitutional and legal scholars, as well as people in the Christian church, have rebuffed the existence of a Bible that mixes religion and legal doctrine. When the concept was first announced, it received notable backlash.

It is now unclear who the publisher and licensor of the new version is. Greenwood's publicist previously told the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY network, that Elite Source Pro is no longer a partner on the project. He was unable to name the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.
